Music or other background sounds are often played in barns as environmental enrichment for animals on farms or to mask sudden disruptive noises. However, previous studies looking at the effects of this practice on nonhuman animal well-being and productivity have found contradictory results. This study monitored the vocal responses of piglets, as indicators of well-being, to evaluate the effect of various sounds played during 2 simulations of stressful farm procedures: (a) the 5 min the animals were held as if for castration and (b) the first 20 hr after weaning. The sound treatments included pink noise, music, vocalizations made by other piglets during actual castrations or the first hours after weaning, and silence (control). The study presented pink noise and music both with and without a binaural beat in the delta-theta frequency range. In both the handling and weaning situations, none of the sound treatments reduced the piglets' call rate below that heard during the control. Piglets vocalized most during playback of pink noise and least during silence and playback of calls from other pigs. These results suggest that playing music or other sounds provides no improvement in conditions for piglets during handling and weaning.  相似文献

Animals often vocalize during territorial challenges as acoustic signals may indicate motivation and fighting ability and contribute to reduce aggressive escalation. Here, we tested the function of agonistic sounds in territorial defence in the painted goby. Pomatoschistus pictus, a small vocal marine fish that defends nests during the breeding season. We first measured the number of times a male approached, avoided, explored, entered and exited two unattended nests associated with either conspecific agonistic sounds or a control: silence or white noise. Acoustic stimuli were played back when the male approached a nest. In a second experimental set, we added visual stimuli, consisting of a conspecific male in a small confinement aquarium near each nest. Even though we found no effect of the visual stimuli, the sound playbacks induced similar effects in both experimental conditions. In the sound vs. silence treatment, we found that when males approached a nest, the playback of conspecific sounds usually triggered avoidance. However, this behaviour did not last as in longer periods males visited nests associated with agonistic sounds more often than silent ones. When the control was white noise, we found no significant effect of the playback treatment in male behaviour. Although we cannot exclude the possibility that other sounds may dissuade nest occupation, our results suggest that agonistic sounds act as territorial intrusion deterrents but are insufficient to prevent nest intrusion on their own. Further studies are needed to test the significance of sound production rate, spectral content and temporal patterns to deter territorial intrusion in fish.  相似文献

Gobius cruentatus emit sounds during agonistic interactions. In order to evaluate the effect of boat noise exposure on G. cruentatus territorial behaviour, we played a field-recorded diesel engine boat noise during aggressive encounters between an intruder and a resident fish in a laboratory-controlled tank. We tested two factors: role (resident vs. intruder) and condition (noisy vs. silent); the test animals underwent all the treatments in a round-robin design. Agonistic behavior of the residents was modified by boat noise: during the playback residents were more submissive and won less encounters than in the control (silent) condition. We suggest that sound production is an effective tool for territorial defense, since the impairment of acoustic communication due to the recreational boat noise diminished the ability of the resident to maintain its territory.  相似文献

Many studies have focused on the effects of anthropogenic noise on animal communication, but only a few have looked at its effect on other behavioural systems. We designed a playback experiment to test the effect of noise on predation risk assessment. We found that in response to boat motor playback, Caribbean hermit crabs (Coenobita clypeatus) allowed a simulated predator to approach closer before they hid. Two hypotheses may explain how boat noise affected risk assessment: it masked an approaching predator''s sound; and/or it reallocated some of the crabs'' finite attention, effectively distracting them, and thus preventing them from responding to an approaching threat. We found no support for the first hypothesis: a silent looming object still got closer during boat motor playbacks than during silence. However, we found support for the attentional hypothesis: when we added flashing lights to the boat motor noise to further distract the hermit crabs, we were able to approach the crabs more closely than with the noise alone. Anthropogenic sounds may thus distract prey and make them more vulnerable to predation.  相似文献

降雨噪声属于常见的自然噪声,由雨滴撞击物体表面产生。目前,有关降雨噪声对动物的潜在影响被普遍忽视。回声定位蝙蝠主要利用声信号在黑暗环境导航空间、探测猎物及社群交流,是开展降雨噪声影响研究的理想类群。本研究选择菲菊头蝠 (Rhinolophus pusillus)作为研究对象,检验降雨噪声是否影响蝙蝠出飞行为。我们在集群栖息地外,播放强降雨噪声、空白对照和种内回声定位声波,开展野外回放实验。利用单因素方差分析及其事后检验,评价菲菊头蝠对不同回放刺激的反应差异。研究发现,相比空白对照,强降雨噪声导致菲菊头蝠的通勤数量百分比平均降低2.82倍,回声定位脉冲数量平均减少4.86倍,集群出飞时间延长3.75 min。相比空白对照,同种回声定位声波对菲菊头蝠出飞行为的影响并不显著。研究结果证实强降雨噪声抑制菲菊头蝠的出飞行为。本研究表明,降雨引起 的噪声干扰可能是导致蝙蝠躲避降雨的重要因素,为野生蝙蝠物种保育与管理提供启示。  相似文献

Previous studies looking at the effects of this practice on non-human animal well-being and productivity have found contradictory results. However, there is still a lack of discussion on whether piglets have the ability to distinguish different types of music. In this study, we exposed piglets to different music conditions to investigate whether the piglets preferred certain music types, in which case those types would have the potential to be used as environmental enrichment. In total, 30 piglets were tested for music type preference to determine whether growing pigs respond differently to different types of music. We used music from two families of instruments (S: string, W: wind) and with two tempos (S: slow, 65 beats/min (bpm); F: fast, 200 bpm), providing four music-type combinations (SS: string-slow; SF: string-fast; WS: wind-slow; WF: wind-fast). The piglets were given a choice between two chambers, one with no music and the other with one of the four types of music, and their behaviour was observed. The results showed that SS and WF music significantly increased residence time (P<0.01) compared with the other music conditions. Compared with the control group (with no music), the different music conditions led to different behavioural responses, where SS music significantly increased lying (P<0.01) and exploration behaviour (P<0.01); SF music significantly increased tail-wagging behaviour (P<0.01); WS music significantly increased exploration (P<0.01); and WF music significantly increased walking, lying, standing and exploration (all P<0.01). The results also showed that musical instruments and tempo had little effect on most of the behaviours. Fast-tempo music significantly increased walking (P=0.02), standing (P<0.01) and tail wagging (P=0.04) compared with slow-tempo music. In conclusion, the results of this experiment show that piglets are more sensitive to tempo than to musical instruments in their response to musical stimulation and seem to prefer SS and WF music to the other two types. The results also suggest a need for further research on the effect of music types on animals.  相似文献

A unique playback system was used to exaggerate continuously the number of calls heard in royal penguin, Eudyptes schlegeli, colonies to determine whether social facilitation increases a female's exposure to both sexual and agonistic activities, a process that could influence the timing of reproduction in colonies. We also determined whether the source of colony sound or the phase of the breeding cycle influenced the facilitation of sexual or agonistic activities. The system recorded and then played a new 12-min colony sound sample every 24 min throughout the first four phases of the breeding cycle. Because each broadcast was unique, this playback system avoids the possibility of habituation and can modify the acoustic environment in social groups for extended periods of time. The activities of penguins in control colonies (with no playback) were compared with those in colonies that heard samples derived from either their own or a different colony. Colony sound facilitated both sexual and agonistic activities from male and female royal penguins during all four phases of the cycle that we examined. Playbacks from the perceiver's own colony facilitated a greater response than sound originating from a different colony. Studies comparing egg-laying dates in colonies exposed continuously to the sounds of agonistic activities with those in control colonies, or colonies exposed continuously to the sounds of sexual activities are now needed to determine whether the facilitation of agonistic activities opposes the effects of social stimulation on the hormonal changes leading to ovulation in colony-dwelling birds. Anthropogenic sound is increasingly considered a major environmental issue, but its effects are relatively unstudied. Organisms may be directly affected by anthropogenic sound in many ways, including interference with their ability to detect mates, predators, or food, and disturbances that directly affect one organism may in turn have indirect effects on others. Thus, to fully appreciate the net effect of anthropogenic sound, it may be important to consider both direct and indirect effects. We report here on a series of experiments to test the hypothesis that anthropogenic sound can generate cascading indirect effects within a community. We used a study system of lady beetles, soybean aphids, and soybean plants, which are a useful model for studying the direct and indirect effects of global change on food webs. For sound treatments, we used several types of music, as well as a mix of urban sounds (e.g., sirens, vehicles, and construction equipment), each at volumes comparable to a busy city street or farm tractor. In 18‐hr feeding trials, rock music and urban sounds caused lady beetles to consume fewer aphids, but other types of music had no effect even at the same volume. We then tested the effect of rock music on the strength of trophic cascades in a 2‐week experiment in plant growth chambers. When exposed to music by AC/DC, who articulated the null hypothesis that “rock and roll ain't noise pollution” in a song of the same name, lady beetles were less effective predators, resulting in higher aphid density and reduced final plant biomass relative to control (no music) treatments. While it is unclear what characteristics of sound generate these effects, our results reject the AC/DC hypothesis and demonstrate that altered interspecific interactions can transmit the indirect effects of anthropogenic noise through a community.  相似文献

Acoustic behavior plays a crucial role in many aspects of cicada biology, such as reproduction and intrasexual competition. Although female sound production has been reported in some cicada species, acoustic behavior of female cicadas has received little attention. In cicada Subpsaltria yangi, the females possess a pair of unusually well-developed stridulatory organs. Here, sound production and its function in females of this remarkable cicada species were investigated. We revealed that the females could produce sounds by stridulatory mechanism during pair formation, and the sounds were able to elicit both acoustic and phonotactic responses from males. In addition, the forewings would strike the body during performing stridulatory sound-producing movements, which generated impact sounds. Acoustic playback experiments indicated that the impact sounds played no role in the behavioral context of pair formation. This study provides the first experimental evidence that females of a cicada species can generate sounds by stridulatory mechanism. We anticipate that our results will promote acoustic studies on females of other cicada species which also possess stridulatory system.  相似文献

Vocal Communication in Pigs: Who are Nursing Piglets Screaming at?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Vocalizations during competition among nursing piglets were studied to investigate their possible effects, functions and implications for welfare. In Expt 1, two experimental piglets in each of 14 litters were temporarily deprived of milk by covering their preferred teats on the sow's udder. These piglets spent more time away from their teats than two control piglets, and vocalized frequently in the 2 min before milk ejection. Frequency of vocalization showed no consistent change over time within nursings; nor did it change in successive nursings despite the fact that hunger presumably increased. In Expt 2, tape recordings of intense vocalizations (screams) produced by piglets competing at the udder were played to 22 litters while they were nursing; each litter was played its own recording, a recording from another litter and silence as a control. Of 51 nursings analysed, 14 were terminated without milk ejection, all during playbacks. When the sow did nurse successfully during a playback, nursing was shorter (138 s) than during the silent controls (179 s). Both these responses by the sow might be expected to advance the next nursing. Piglets rarely showed any apparent response to screaming either from their littermates or from the loudspeaker. These results suggest that the calls function mainly as a signal to the sow that some piglets are being excluded from the current nursing episode.  相似文献

Perilymph, which bathes the sensory cells of the cochlea, was collected from guinea pigs exposed to noise and analyzed via two cation-exchange HPLC procedures with fluorescence detection, resolving 51 and 81 primary-amine compounds, respectively, at a sensitivity limit of 0.1 pmol relative to leucine. During a first period, each animal was either exposed to noise at 80, 90, or 115 decibels sound-pressure level or maintained in silence (controls), and during a second period, the same animal was maintained in silence. Perilymph was collected during both periods, and perilymphatic components were compared, within animals and across animals, for several levels of sound stimulation. A gamma-aminobutyric acid-like component was elevated in the first period in proportion to stimulus intensity by the various methods of comparison, suggesting an auditory-neurotransmitter role for this component. Aspartic acid was elevated in the second period, 2-3.5 h after onset of sound stimulation, compatible with the release of aspartic acid from central auditory synapses. In addition, a methionine-enkephalin-like component, distinct from leucine-enkephalin, was detected in perilymph from control animals and was elevated in response to noise at 115 decibels. Regression coefficients, determined for the relation between sound intensity and first-period concentrations or the difference between first and second-period concentrations, indicated zero linear regression at p = 0.05 for glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, taurine, and 39 other perilymphatic components, consistent with the hypothesis that these compounds are unlikely to be peripheral auditory neurotransmitters.  相似文献

This study examined the influence of three handling treatments, imposed from birth to 8 weeks, on the approach behaviour of 24 pigs to humans at 10–24 weeks of age. Piglets in two treatments, weaning/handling and handling, regularly received human contact, while piglets in the third treatment, no handling, only received human contact during routine husbandry. Piglets in the weaning/handling treatment were artificially reared, while those in the other two treatments remained on the sow until weaning at 4 weeks of age. Pigs in the weaning/handling and handling treatments showed increased approach to a stationary human in six tests from 10 to 24 weeks of age. For example, piglets in the weaning/handling and handling treatments spent more (P<0.01) time within 0.5 m of the human and were quicker (P<0.05) to physically interact with the human than pigs in the no handling treatment. Observations on the sexual behaviour of the boars from 25 to 35 weeks of age indicated that handling had no adverse effects on sexual behaviour.It is concluded that early handling of pigs will influence their behavioural response to humans later in life. Therefore, early handling may be a practical method for man to manipulate the pig's subsequent relationship with humans. The possibility of the existence of a “sensitive period” for “socialization” in pigs is discussed in the light of the present results.  相似文献

The risk–disturbance hypothesis states that animals react to human stressors in the same way as they do to natural predators. Given increasing human–wildlife contact, understanding whether animals perceive anthropogenic sounds as a threat is important for assessing the long-term sustainability of wildlife tourism and proposing appropriate mitigation strategies. A study of pygmy marmoset (Cebuella niveiventris) responses to human speech found marmosets fled, decreased feeding and resting, and increased alert behaviors in response to human speech. Following this study, we investigated pygmy marmoset reactions to playbacks of different acoustic stimuli: controls (no playback, white noise and cicadas), anthropogenic noise (human speech and motorboats), and avian predators. For each playback condition, we recorded the behavior of a marmoset and looked at how the behaviors changed during and after the playback relative to behaviors before. We repeated this on ten different marmoset groups, playing each condition once to each group. The results did not replicate a previous study on the same species, at the same site, demonstrating the importance of replication in primate research, particularly when results are used to inform conservation policy. The results showed increased scanning during playbacks of the cicadas and predators compared with before the playback, and an increase in resting after playbacks of avian predators, but no evidence of behavior change in response to playbacks of human speech. There was no effect of ambient sound levels or distance between the playback source and focal animals on their behavior for all playback conditions. Although we find that noise can change the behavior of pygmy marmosets, we did not find evidence to support the risk–disturbance hypothesis.

Segregated early weaning (SEW), introduced with the objectives of eradicating or controlling diseases and improving performance, is becoming increasingly popular among producers. The main features of SEW are weaning piglets early and moving the newly weaned piglets to a site isolated from the sows and other animals. In this article, we describe the key features of SEW and factors leading to its development. We review some of the main welfare issues involved with raising pigs in this way. We describe experiments that were crucial in the development of SEW and that showed positive effects on the health status and weight gain of piglets. We also review experiments that indicated welfare problems associated with this system. Specifically, we look at the effects of early weaning on the behavior and well-being of piglets. In addition, we look at other features of SEW, such as repeated cross-fostering and transport of young piglets. We provide directions for future research and offer recommendations for producers.  相似文献

Following a planktonic dispersal period of days to months, the larvae of benthic marine organisms must locate suitable seafloor habitat in which to settle and metamorphose. For animals that are sessile or sedentary as adults, settlement onto substrates that are adequate for survival and reproduction is particularly critical, yet represents a challenge since patchily distributed settlement sites may be difficult to find along a coast or within an estuary. Recent studies have demonstrated that the underwater soundscape, the distinct sounds that emanate from habitats and contain information about their biological and physical characteristics, may serve as broad-scale environmental cue for marine larvae to find satisfactory settlement sites. Here, we contrast the acoustic characteristics of oyster reef and off-reef soft bottoms, and investigate the effect of habitat-associated estuarine sound on the settlement patterns of an economically and ecologically important reef-building bivalve, the Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica). Subtidal oyster reefs in coastal North Carolina, USA show distinct acoustic signatures compared to adjacent off-reef soft bottom habitats, characterized by consistently higher levels of sound in the 1.5–20 kHz range. Manipulative laboratory playback experiments found increased settlement in larval oyster cultures exposed to oyster reef sound compared to unstructured soft bottom sound or no sound treatments. In field experiments, ambient reef sound produced higher levels of oyster settlement in larval cultures than did off-reef sound treatments. The results suggest that oyster larvae have the ability to respond to sounds indicative of optimal settlement sites, and this is the first evidence that habitat-related differences in estuarine sounds influence the settlement of a mollusk. Habitat-specific sound characteristics may represent an important settlement and habitat selection cue for estuarine invertebrates and could play a role in driving settlement and recruitment patterns in marine communities.  相似文献

Highly aroused or scared animals may produce a variety of sounds that sound harsh and are somewhat unpredictable. These sounds frequently contain nonlinear acoustic phenomena, and these nonlinearities may elicit arousal or alarm responses in humans and many animals. We designed a playback experiment to elucidate whether specific nonlinear phenomena can elicit increased responsiveness in great‐tailed grackles (Quiscalus mexicanus). We broadcast two control sounds (a 0.5‐s, 3‐kHz pure tone and the song of tropical kingbirds (Tyrannus melancholicus) and three test sounds that all began with a 0.4‐s, 3‐kHz pure tone and ended with 0.1 s of either a 1‐ to 5‐kHz band of white noise, an abrupt frequency jump to 1 kHz, or an abrupt frequency jump to 5 kHz. In response to these three nonlinear phenomena, grackles decreased their relaxed behavior (walking, foraging, and preening) and increased looking. A second experiment looked at the rapidity of the time course of frequency change and found that the abrupt frequency jump from 3 to 1 kHz, as opposed to a gradual downward frequency modulation over the same bandwidth, was uniquely arousing. These results suggest that while nonlinear phenomena may be generally evocative, frequency jumps may be the most evocative in great‐tailed grackles. Future studies in other systems can evaluate this general hypothesis.  相似文献

Can plants sense natural airborne sounds and respond to them rapidly? We show that Oenothera drummondii flowers, exposed to playback sound of a flying bee or to synthetic sound signals at similar frequencies, produce sweeter nectar within 3 min, potentially increasing the chances of cross pollination. We found that the flowers vibrated mechanically in response to these sounds, suggesting a plausible mechanism where the flower serves as an auditory sensory organ. Both the vibration and the nectar response were frequency‐specific: the flowers responded and vibrated to pollinator sounds, but not to higher frequency sound. Our results document for the first time that plants can rapidly respond to pollinator sounds in an ecologically relevant way. Potential implications include plant resource allocation, the evolution of flower shape and the evolution of pollinators sound. Finally, our results suggest that plants may be affected by other sounds as well, including anthropogenic ones.  相似文献

Distress calls were recorded from three sympatric species of pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus nathusii, P. pipistrellus and P. pygmaeus) in England and Northern Ireland. At foraging sites, we conducted playback experiments, consisting of experimental distress call sequences from each species and control sequences of random noise and sound recorded with no bats present. We measured response by simultaneously recording ultrasound during playbacks and counting the echolocation pulses above a predetermined threshold which were then identified to species. All three species responded to each other's calls. The number of recorded echolocation pulses of all species increased eight-fold, on average, during the playback of distress call sequences compared with the playback of ultrasonic noise, and four-fold compared with the playback of silence. In a separate playback experiment, the number of echolocation pulses of P. pygmaeus increased 14-fold during the playback of distress calls of four endemic species of bat from Madagascar (Emballonura atrata, Myotis goudoti, Miniopterus majori and M. manavi) compared with the playback of silence. This increased response might have been caused by the high calling rates of the Malagasy species. Distress calls of P. nathusii, P. pipistrellus and P. pygmaeus were structurally convergent, consisting of a series of downward-sweeping, frequency-modulated elements of short duration and high intensity with a relatively strong harmonic content. Selection may favour convergence in the structure of distress calls among bat species, if attracting heterospecifics increases the chance of repelling predators by mobbing.  相似文献

Although the use of sounds in spatial orientation is widespread among animals, only a few groups advanced such specific adaptations as echolocation. In contrast, practically all animals and night-active species in particular, must occasionally orient themselves relative to invisible but audible objects such as a hidden rival or predator. In this study, I would like to determine the impact of locating which involves the use of acoustic parameters of sender’s vocalisations by receivers and changes of positions and triangulation of sender’s vocalisations by receivers in estimating the distance to the sender during night-time territorial interactions of the corncrake (Crex crex). Males were subjected to two kinds of stimuli: approaching one, imitating the change of the distance of the calling intruder toward the focal male while keeping the direction constant, or stationary stimuli, involving acoustic stimulation with no motion. Although males subjected to approaching stimulation moved longer distances, in both stimuli groups, males moved predominantly toward or out of the playback speaker, and only occasionally made sideway movements. However, the results gave no evidence of corncrakes moving specifically in order to locate the source of the sound; they suggest that males moved toward or away from the already located sound. The fact that males moved longer distances in response to approaching than stationary stimuli indicates that they were able to perceive the change of the distance to the playback speaker based only on structural parameters or amplitude of the calls played.  相似文献

A low feed intake during the first days after weaning is predisposing for weaning diarrhoea and weight loss. In this experiment we tried to increase the feed intake of the piglets after weaning by stimulating the solid feed intake during the last two weeks before weaning by separating them from the sows for 7 h/d. In addition, the effect of flavour recognition and the interaction of flavour recognition with intermittent suckling were tested. In two consecutive weaning rounds, sows were divided over two compartments with 7 to 10 sows each. They were assigned to one of four treatments in a two factorial design: control housing/control feed (n = 7); control housing/ flavoured feed (n = 8); intermittent suckling/control feed (n = 7); intermittent suckling/ flavoured feed (n = 9). After weaning, for each round 3 pens of 6 pigs were selected per treatment group. All these piglets received the same feed with the same flavour at the same concentration. Contrary to the expectations, intermittent suckling decreased the solid feed intake during the last two weeks before weaning. Flavour addition to the creep feed did not increase feed intake or other performance parameters before and after weaning, nor did it interact with intermittent suckling. Although after intermittent suckling pigs ate less creep feed before weaning, they did not perform worse after weaning. However, to increase feed intake after weaning, longer periods of separation might be necessary.  相似文献
