While lunar rhythms are commonly documented in plants and animals living in terrestrial and shallow-water environments, deep-sea organisms have essentially been overlooked in that respect. This report describes evidence of lunar periodicity in the reproduction of 6 deep-sea species belonging to 2 phyla. Occurrences of gamete release in free spawners and larval release in brooders exhibited significant peaks around the new and full moons, respectively. The exact nature of this lunar period (endogenous or exogenous rhythm) and its adaptive significance in the deep sea remain elusive. Current knowledge suggests that proxies of moon phases at depth may include fluxes in particulate matter deposition, cyclic currents, and moonlight for species living in the disphotic zone.  相似文献

Synaptic bodies (SB) are ultrastructural organelles observed in the pinealocytes of mammals. According to its shape, they have been classified into synaptic ribbons (SR), synaptic spherules (SS), and intermediate synaptic bodies (ISB). They have been related to the melatonin regulation and production mechanisms of the pineal gland. Circadian and circannual fluctuations of both melatonin and SB have been reported. The possibility that other external factors, apart from light-dark or seasonal cycles, might influence pineal function has been suggested. We studied the evolution of the number of SB and serum melatonin levels not only during light-dark and seasonal phases but also during lunar cycles. Forty male wistar rats were used. Experiment was first carried out in winter and repeated identically in spring. Each season, one group of animals was killed during the new-moon days and a second group during the full-moon days: half of both groups in the photophase and the other half in the scotophase. The number of SB was measured at electron microscopic level whereas serum melatonin levels were determined by radioimmunoassay techniques. Main results showed that SR number and serum melatonin levels were higher during scotophases, winter and full-moon days. The SS only showed a light predominance during winter, whereas predominance of the ISB was found only during the scotophases. These results support the influence of the photophasic factors on the SR and ISB variations. In the case of the SS the influence of the lunar cycles is always dependent on the other factors. Finally, the serum level of melatonin is clearly influenced by the photophasic rhythms and the seasonal periods but not by the lunar cycles.  相似文献

The circadian rhythms of food and 1% NaCl intake, and urine, Na+, Cl- and K+ excretion were followed up in male Wistar rats before and one week after bilateral adrenalectomy at 4-hour intervals during two consecutive days. The circadian rhythms of plasma renin activity (PRA) and plasma immunoreactive insulin (IRI) were evaluated after decapitation of both intact and adrenalectomized rats at 08, 16 and 24 h. To all rats 1% NaCl was offered instead of drinking water. Adrenalectomy did not cause any significant phase shift in the cosine curves approximating the data collected at 4-hour intervals. The circadian rhythms showed the same relationships before and after the operation: the rhythms of food intake, K+ excretion and saline intake preceded significantly the rhythms of urine, Na+ and Cl- excretion. Adrenalectomy induced an increase in mean PRA and shifted its minimal value from 08 to 24 h. After the operation mean IRI decreased and the minimal value shifted from 16 to 24 h. It was concluded that adrenal glands do not play an important role in the synchronization of the circadian rhythms of food and 1% NaCl intake, urine and synchronization of the circadian rhythms of food and 1% NaCl intake, urine and electrolyte excretion with the illumination cycle, but play a relevant role in the synchronization of the circadian rhythms of PRA and IRI in the rat.  相似文献

地理隔离是驱动物种分布格局形成的主要因素之一。本文回顾和总结了近几十年来地理隔离影响陆栖哺乳动物空间分布的研究成果, 从自然因素和人为因素两方面就地理隔离对物种分布的影响研究进展进行了综述。自然因素包括山脉、水体、沙漠和其他极端环境、气候变化等, 这些要素通常是在陆栖哺乳动物的缓慢演化进程中发挥作用; 人为因素侧重于因人类活动参与导致的物种分布变化, 包括景观结构变化、交通设施建设等, 在短短几百年甚至几十年内, 可以使物种分布特征发生显著变化。地理隔离对陆栖哺乳动物分布的作用是普遍而相对的, 长期存在且处于动态变化中。多种地理隔离因素之间的尺度效应不同, 哺乳动物在适应地理隔离的过程中表现出了生物个体和种群的响应过程。最后, 建议今后重点开展以下几方面的研究: (1)基于历史动物地理学与生态动物地理学, 深入研究地理隔离与动物地理边界形成的原因; (2)微观尺度下, 借助分子生物学和各种组学技术探讨地理隔离对物种遗传和适应机制的影响; (3)借鉴其他动物类群的研究经验, 加强对我国陆生哺乳动物的跟踪监测; (4)以数据驱动为导向, 将动物地理学与数据科学相结合, 以更好地分析动物分布的变迁史。  相似文献

Abstract

The terrestrial sand beach isopod Scyphax ornatus Dana exhibits circadian and circa-semilunar activity rhythms when kept in constant conditions in the laboratory. The circadian rhythm restricts activity to the subjective night and can be synchronised to artificial light cycles. The circa-semilunar rhythm is expressed as a cyclic variation in overall activity level, with isopods alternately active on 6–8 consecutive nights and then inactive on the next 6–8 nights. The circa-semilunar rhythm matches a fortnightly cycle in food availability on the isopods’ home beach, but does not appear to be causally related to the lunar cycle, the spring/neap tidal cycle, or to moulting. This and other evidence suggests that the ecologicalrole of the endogenous circa-semilunar rhythm is to allow Scyphax, within the protection of their burrows, to predict nightly foraging opportunities; a new role for such a long-period rhythm.  相似文献

  • Orbital movement of the Moon generates a system of gravitational fields that periodically alter the gravitational force on Earth. This lunar tidal acceleration (Etide) is known to act as an external environmental factor affecting many growth and developmental phenomena in plants. Our study focused on the lunar tidal influence on stem elongation growth, nutations and leaf movements of peppermint.
  • Plants were continuously recorded with time‐lapse photography under constant illumination as well in constant illumination following 5 days of alternating dark–light cycles. Time courses of shoot movements were correlated with contemporaneous time courses of the Etide estimates. Optical microscopy and SEM were used in anatomical studies.
  • All plant shoot movements were synchronised with changes in the lunisolar acceleration. Using a periodogram, wavelet analysis and local correlation index, a convergence was found between the rhythms of lunisolar acceleration and the rhythms of shoot growth. Also observed were cyclical changes in the direction of rotation of stem apices when gravitational dynamics were at their greatest. After contrasting dark–light cycle experiments, nutational rhythms converged to an identical phase relationship with the Etide and almost immediately their renewed movements commenced. Amplitudes of leaf movements decreased during leaf growth up to the stage when the leaf was fully developed; the periodicity of leaf movements correlated with the Etide rhythms.
  • For the fist time, it was documented that lunisolar acceleration is an independent rhythmic environmental signal capable of influencing the dynamics of plant stem elongation. This phenomenon is synchronised with the known effects of Etide on nutations and leaf movements.

A major target for environmental managers when trying to minimise the road-barrier effect on wildlife is to improve permeability to animal movements. Previous studies have demonstrated that drainage culverts are used by vertebrates, although knowledge of the main influencing factors remains limited. The use of 34 culverts from two roads in southern Portugal, differing in traffic volume, vehicle speeds and configuration, was evaluated by the analysis of terrestrial vertebrate footprint data (408 passage-operative days). Culvert crossings were related to various explanatory variables by means of canonical ordination techniques. We recorded 901 complete crossings, corresponding to an average of 2.2 crossings/culvert/operative day. Thirteen taxa were detected, all in more than one passage. Animal species included reptiles, small mammals, lagomorphs, carnivores and domestic dogs and cats. Our results suggest that fencing might have a funnelling effect, directing larger animals toward culverts. Also, vegetation covering culvert entrances seems to have a positive effect, particularly on genets; longer passages with entrances far from the pavement were, apparently, avoided by smaller animals; a lower number of crossings was detected on passages with detritus pits; the closest passages to urban areas are more often used by domestic species; forest-living species favour passages with low, open land cover nearby; and smaller species, like lagomorphs and small mammals, appear to use more culverts near the pavement, which probably reflects the importance of road verges as refuges for these species. Although not used by all species present in the study area, constructing numerous passages of different sizes without detritus pits and which are distributed along roads might be an important step in mitigating road fragmentation effects on animal populations.  相似文献

Although it is commonly assumed that closely related animals are similar in body size, the degree of similarity has not been examined across the taxonomic hierarchy. Moreover, little is known about the variation or consistency of body size patterns across geographic space or evolutionary time. Here, we draw from a data set of terrestrial, nonvolant mammals to quantify and compare patterns across the body size spectrum, the taxonomic hierarchy, continental space, and evolutionary time. We employ a variety of statistical techniques including "sib-sib" regression, phylogenetic autocorrelation, and nested ANOVA. We find an extremely high resemblance (heritability) of size among congeneric species for mammals over approximately 18 g; the result is consistent across the size spectrum. However, there is no significant relationship among the body sizes of congeneric species for mammals under approximately 18 g. We suspect that life-history and ecological parameters are so tightly constrained by allometry at diminutive size that animals can only adapt to novel ecological conditions by modifying body size. The overall distributions of size for each continental fauna and for the most diverse orders are quantitatively similar for North America, South America, and Africa, despite virtually no overlap in species composition. Differences in ordinal composition appear to account for quantitative differences between continents. For most mammalian orders, body size is highly conserved, although there is extensive overlap at all levels of the taxonomic hierarchy. The body size distribution for terrestrial mammals apparently was established early in the Tertiary, and it has remained remarkably constant over the past 50 Ma and across the major continents. Lineages have diversified in size to exploit environmental opportunities but only within limits set by allometric, ecological, and evolutionary constraints.  相似文献

Many studies have shown that endotherms become more heterothermic when the costs of thermoregulation are high and/or when limited energy availability constrains thermoregulatory capacity. However, the roles of many ecological variables, including constraints on foraging opportunities and/or success, remain largely unknown. To test the prediction that thermoregulatory patterns should be related to foraging opportunities in a heterothermic endotherm, we examined the relationship between the lunar cycle and heterothermy in Freckled Nightjars (Caprimulgus tristigma), which are visually orienting, nocturnal insectivores that are dependent on ambient light to forage. This model system provides an opportunity to assess whether variation in foraging opportunities influences the expression of heterothermy. The nightjars were active and foraged for insects when moonlight was available but became inactive and heterothermic in the absence of moonlight. Lunar illumination was a much stronger predictor of the magnitude of heterothermic responses than was air temperature (T(a)). Our data suggest that heterothermy was strongly related to variation in foraging opportunities associated with the lunar cycle, even though food abundance appeared to remain relatively high throughout the study period. Patterns of thermoregulation in this population of Freckled Nightjars provide novel insights into the environmental and ecological determinants of heterothermy, with the lunar cycle, and not T(a), being the strongest predictor of torpor use.  相似文献

Cataclysm No More: New Views on the Timing and Delivery of Lunar Impactors   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
If properly interpreted, the impact record of the Moon, Earth’s nearest neighbour, can be used to gain insights into how the Earth has been influenced by impacting events since its formation ~4.5 billion years (Ga) ago. However, the nature and timing of the lunar impactors – and indeed the lunar impact record itself – are not well understood. Of particular interest are the ages of lunar impact basins and what they tell us about the proposed “lunar cataclysm” and/or the late heavy bombardment (LHB), and how this impact episode may have affected early life on Earth or other planets. Investigations of the lunar impactor population over time have been undertaken and include analyses of orbital data and images; lunar, terrestrial, and other planetary sample data; and dynamical modelling. Here, the existing information regarding the nature of the lunar impact record is reviewed and new interpretations are presented. Importantly, it is demonstrated that most evidence supports a prolonged lunar (and thus, terrestrial) bombardment from ~4.2 to 3.4 Ga and not a cataclysmic spike at ~3.9 Ga. Implications for the conditions required for the origin of life are addressed.  相似文献

In order to investigate the circadian oscillatory system, the present study performed simultaneous and continuous recordings of brain and intraperitoneal temperatures, drinking and locomotion in rats under light-dark (LD) cycles and continuous dim illumination (dim LL) for a total period of 16 days. Compared to circadian amplitudes under LD, those under dim LL were significantly reduced by 34% for drinking and 50% for locomotion, but were not for brain and intraperitoneal temperatures. On the other hand, means of steady circadian periods during last 10 days under dim LL were all within a close range between 24.2 and 24.3 h in these rhythms. Besides the steady periods, one rat exhibited weak circadian period of 23.7 and 24.6 h, but these multiple frequencies were also equally observed in the four rhythms. The similarity in the periodicities suggests that these temperature and activity rhythms might be driven by a common oscillatory system. Therefore differential reductions in the amplitudes of drinking and loc omotor rhythms might be caused by a masking effect of dim LL on their rhythm output-pathways. Hence rats may temporally coordinate various physiological and behavioral functions by such clock system under time cue free environment.  相似文献

Long‐bone scaling has been analyzed in a large number of terrestrial mammals for which body masses were known. Earlier proposals that geometric or elastic similarity are suitable as explanations for long‐bone scaling across a large size range are not supported. Differential scaling is present, and large mammals on average scale with lower regression slopes than small mammals. Large mammals tend to reduce bending stress during locomotion by having shorter limb bones than predicted rather than by having very thick diaphyses, as is usually assumed. The choice of regression model used to describe data samples in analyses of scaling becomes increasingly important as correlation coefficients decrease, and theoretical models supported by one analysis may not be supported when applying another statistical model to the same data. Differences in limb posture and locomotor performance have profound influence on the amount of stress set up in the appendicular bones during rigorous physical activity and make it unlikely that scaling of long bones across a large size range of terrestrial mammals can be satisfactorily explained by any one power function. In the search for amino acids in lunar fines, a major problem is the prevention of contamination from terrestrial sources, and the recognition of terrestrial contamination when it has occurred. Synthesis of amino acids conceivably could take place in the lunar module rocket exhaust, a possibility that has not been adequately ruled out. Amino acids could be shed from the astronauts suits, a possibility which has not been studied at all. Amino acids could also be introduced, at many stages of terrestrial manipulation, and during the analytical procedures employed. Hand contamination has qualitative and quantitative features that are characteristic and can be assessed. Precautions for elimination of hand and microbial contamination from glassware, reagents and water are proposed.A second major problem is the efficiency of recovery of amino acids added to lunar material, which is then subject to the complete analytical scheme. This necessitates the availability of lunar material to develop proper procedures.Besides the amino acids present in excess of blank values, it is necessary for the correct interpretation of any positive findings to know whether the amino acids are free or bound and optically inactive or active.The ion exchange chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry are procedures that complement each other. Both should be applied not only to the same sample but to the same preparations. To pit one method against the other is to risk losing the best analytical data.  相似文献

Biological rhythms have been observed in practically all groups of laboratory mammals and at every level of physiological and behavioural organization. Biological rhythms are classified according to their period as ultradian (less than 24 h), circadian (approximately 24 h), infradian (greater than 24 h), and seasonal or circannual rhythms (approximately 1 year). This review outlines what is known about the neurobiology of biological rhythms in mammals and describes the hierarchical order in which ultradian, circadian and infradian rhythms are related to each other. The article does not attempt to catalogue every physiological variable showing rhythmical fluctuations in laboratory mammals. Rather, it focuses on the basic concepts of circadian rhythms and recent advances made in our understanding of the physiology of the internal clock controlling circadian and other biological rhythms.  相似文献

Social factors constitute an important component of the environment of many animals and have a profound influence on their physiology and behavior. Studies of social influences on circadian rhythms have been hampered by a methodological trade-off: automatic data acquisition systems obtain high-quality data but are effective only for individually isolated animals and therefore compromise by requiring a context that may not be sociobiologically relevant. Human observers can monitor animal activity in complex social environments but are limited in the resolution and quality of data that can be gathered. The authors developed and validated a method for prolonged, automatic, high-quality monitoring of focal honey bees in a relatively complex social environment and with minimal illumination. The method can be adapted for studies on other animals. The authors show that the system provides a reliable estimation of the actual path of a focal bee, only rarely misses its location for > 1 min, and removes most nonspecific signals from the background. Using this system, the authors provide the first evidence of social influence on the ontogeny of activity rhythms. Young bees that were housed with old foragers show ~24-h rhythms in locomotor activity at a younger age and with stronger rhythms than bees housed with a similar number of young bees. By contrast, the maturation of the hypopharyngeal glands was slower in bees housed with foragers, similar to findings in previous studies. The morphology and function of the hypopharyngeal glands vary along with age-based division of labor. Therefore, these findings indicate that social inhibition of task-related maturation was effective in the experimental setup. This study suggests that although the ontogeny of circadian rhythms is typically correlated with the age-based division of labor, their social regulation is different.  相似文献

Among terrestrial mammals, the morphology of the gastrointestinal tract reflects the metabolic demands of the animal and individual requirements for processing, distributing, and absorbing nutrients. To determine if gastrointestinal tract morphology is similarly correlated with metabolic requirements in marine mammals, we examined the relationship between basal metabolic rate (BMR) and small intestinal length in pinnipeds and cetaceans. Oxygen consumption was measured for resting bottlenose dolphins and Weddell seals, and the results combined with data for four additional species of carnivorous marine mammal. Data for small intestinal length were obtained from previously published reports. Similar analyses were conducted for five species of carnivorous terrestrial mammal, for which BMR and intestinal length were known. The results indicate that the BMRs of Weddell seals and dolphins resting on the water surface are 1.6 and 2.3 times the predicted levels for similarly sized domestic terrestrial mammals, respectively. Small intestinal lengths for carnivorous marine mammals depend on body size and are comparatively longer than those of terrestrial carnivores. The relationship between basal metabolic rate (kcal day(-1)) and small intestinal length (m) for both marine and terrestrial carnivores was, BMR=142.5 intestinal length(1.20) (r(2)=0.83). We suggest that elevated metabolic rates among marine mammal carnivores are associated with comparatively large alimentary tracts that are presumably required for supporting the energetic demands of an aquatic lifestyle and for feeding on vertebrate and invertebrate prey.  相似文献

A recent report that popliteal illumination shifted the circadian rhythms of body temperature and melatonin challenged the longstanding belief that light phase-shifting the circadian system in mammals is mediated only through the retina. The authors tested effects of popliteal illumination and illumination provided through the eyelids on melatonin suppression. In randomized, counterbalanced orders, healthy volunteers received three treatments from midnight until 2:00 AM, one on each of three visits to the laboratory. Treatments included (1) no illumination from light pads applied to the popliteal fossae, with light mask maintained at < 3 lux (control); (2) light mask illuminated at 1700 lux, with popliteal light pads extinguished; and (3) popliteal light pads illuminated (13,000 lux) and light mask at < 3 lux (control). Saliva specimens were sampled at midnight, at 1:00 AM, and at 2:00 AM. Mean salivary melatonin concentrations rose from an average of 30.8 (3.9) pg/ml at midnight (baseline), to 33.2 (4.0) pg/ml at 1:00 AM, and to 37.2 (3.8) pg/ml at 2:00 AM in all three conditions, but no statistical differences were found using repeated-measures ANOVA. No evidence of melatonin suppression by either popliteal or closed eyelid light stimulation was found. These data suggest that bright retinal illumination is necessary for suppression of melatonin mediated through the suprachiasmatic nuclei.  相似文献

地理隔离是驱动物种空间分布格局形成的主要原因之一。利用我国大中型陆栖哺乳动物的地理分布数据,基于信息地图生物区(Infomap Bioregions)方法探测生物地理区域,提取对大中型陆栖哺乳动物类群的分布扩散产生阻隔效应的主要界线。从温度、降水和地形的梯度变化角度入手,应用空间自回归模型确定与生物地理区边界相关的主要驱动因子,构建地理加权逻辑回归(GWLR)模型分析各驱动因子重要性的空间非平稳性特征。结果表明,研究区域划分为3个主要的生物地理区,除年降水量变异系数与边界联系不明显外,其余变量均在10%及以下的显著性水平与生物地理区边界呈正相关,反映出生物地理区边界与气候突变、地形障碍和人类活动的协同作用有关。生物地理区1与生物地理区3的边界线的主导影响因子是人类足迹指数,生物地理区1和生物地理区2的边界线的主导影响因子是气温季节性变动系数变异系数,生物地理区2和生物地理区3边界线在祁连山脉一带的主导影响因子主要是气温季节性变动系数变异系数,其余地区为地形障碍。多类群物种对隔离屏障的响应模式难以统一,研究从大中型动物入手,通过识别以不同物种组合为特征的生物地理区域,揭示物种在空间上的分组方式,为探讨各动物类群的隔离机制提供空间模式和框架。  相似文献
