The dynamics of cellular development and homeostasis of the ovary depend on the balance between proliferation and cell death throughout the reproductive cycle. Millerichthys robustus is an annual fish whose ovarian follicles develop asynchronously, allowing daily reproduction from sexual maturity until death. The objective of this research is to describe, histologically, the processes of follicular atresia and regression of postovulatory follicular complexes (POC) throughout a reproductive cycle of M. robustus. Patterns of cell death were documented by apoptosis in atretic follicles and POC, and necrosis in the POC after ovulation with an associated inflammatory response. Atretic follicles were seen from the onset of sexual maturity, during week three post-hatching (PH), both in primary growth (from the Cortical alveoli step, with folliculogenesis completed) and secondary growth Stages, with a higher prevalence in the latter. POCs were observed in different stages of regression from week four PH until the death of the fish. The apoptotic characteristics found were: (i) fragmentation of the nuclear membrane and zona pellucida, and liquefaction of the cortical alveoli and yolk; (ii) follicular cells becoming phagocytic, increasing their size, and migrating within the oocyte; and (iii) formation of an intrafollicular lumen, a product of phagocytosis of the oocyte constituents and dispersed pigments that remain after the digestion of yolk and cortical alveoli. The morphological changes of the follicular cells of the POC, from a squamous morphology after ovulation to columnar during its regression with PAS+ contents, was documented, suggesting a secretory activity.  相似文献

Diapause is a metabolic arrest expressed by annual killifish embryos as an extreme adaptation to persist in environments that show alternate periods of favourable‐hostile conditions along the annual cycle. Survival under deteriorated condition can be considered as the final consequence of a previous set of complementary morphophysiological and behavioral processes in adult fishes. Millerichthys robustus is the only annual fish that has developed an annual life history in North America wherewith allow us to consider it as an emerging model for annual killifishes to review, analyze and integrate the knowledge about its reproductive biology involved in allowing the embryos in diapause to survive face the hostile environmental condition. First, we review developmental ecology of Millerichthys embryos throughout different periods (flood, drought and humid) of the annual life cycle showing the possible developmental trajectories in situ. We then analyze: (i) the way in which embryos achieve survive drought from protective cortical structures (perivitelline space and egg envelope) that present dynamic changes according to the conditions to which they are exposed buffering the harmful effects of high temperatures and water loss. (ii) The nature and origin of these protective structures during the ovogenesis (cortical alveoli and zona pellucida give rise to the perivitelline space and egg envelope respectively and oil droplets represent an emergency nutritional reserve). (iii) Sexual synchronization through secretion of pheromones and the reproductive behavior that allows them to spawn under the substrate. Embryonic survival is achieved by success of simplest interactions between reproductive biology elements prior to embryo development.  相似文献

We provide histological details of the development of oocytes in the cyprinodontid flagfish, Jordanella floridae. There are six stages of oogenesis: Oogonial proliferation, chromatin nucleolus, primary growth (previtellogenesis [PG]), secondary growth (vitellogenesis), oocyte maturation and ovulation. The ovarian lamellae are lined by a germinal epithelium composed of epithelial cells and scattered oogonia. During primary growth, the development of cortical alveoli and oil droplets, are initiated simultaneously. During secondary growth, yolk globules coalesce into a fluid mass. The full‐grown oocyte contains a large globule of fluid yolk. The germinal vesicle is at the animal pole, and the cortical alveoli and oil droplets are located at the periphery. The disposition of oil droplets at the vegetal pole of the germinal vesicle during late secondary growth stage is a unique characteristic. The follicular cell layer is composed initially of a single layer of squamous cells during early PG which become columnar during early vitellogenesis. During primary and secondary growth stages, filaments develop among the follicular cells and also around the micropyle. The filaments are seen extending from the zona pellucida after ovulation. During ovulation, a space is evident between the oocyte and the zona pellucida. Asynchronous spawning activity is confirmed by the observation that, after ovulation, the ovarian lamellae contain follicles in both primary and secondary growth stages; in contrast, when the seasonal activity of oogenesis and spawning ends, after ovulation, the ovarian lamellae contain only follicles in the primary growth stage. The annual killifish inhabits in extreme locations with unpredictable rainy season where survives through the massive generation of embryos resistant of drought, capable to remain in a state of metabolic dormancy (three moments of diapause during embryonic development) protected by embryonic cortical structures: perivitelline space, egg envelope and its ornamented structures (trapeze-shaped projections and filaments in Millerichthys robustus). This research describes, for the first time, changes in cortical structures during three diapause stages in embryos of annual fish M. robustus during an annual life cycle. Embryos were collected in three periods through the year in a temporal water body: flood, drought and wet. During flood period all embryos were found in diapause I (during epiboly, dispersion of the blastomeres stage) with maximum thickness in all cortical structures and presence of egg envelope filaments. During drought period all embryos were in diapause II (development during somitogenesis, before the organogenesis) and its structures reduced its thickness significantly and lost the egg envelope filaments. Interestingly, embryos in diapause II and III (embryonic development completed in a pre hatching stage) were found during wet period (an example of bet-hedging strategy) in which all structures presented a recovery tending to its original condition observed during flood period. This research demonstrates that annual fish embryos respond to their exposure to seasonal environmental variations with dynamic structural changes that are fundamental for their survival.  相似文献

The developmental stages of female germ cells were analysed in a wild population of the protogynous teleost Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe, 1834). 321 wild dusky grouper females were collected in the South Mediterranean Sea during the spawning season and their ovaries analysed using histological and histochemical techniques. Oocyte morphology, nucleus-cytoplasm ratio (N/C) range, location and movements of cytoplasmic inclusions during primary growth, vitellogenesis and final oocyte maturation were described. The distribution of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates through oocyte development was also investigated in 50 females. Lipid vesicles appeared firstly in the mid ooplasm of oocytes larger than 130 microm, at the beginning of the secondary growth phase. Immediately afterwards, small carbohydrate granules (PAS and Alcian blue positive) appeared before the occurrence of the first yolk granules. Tyrosine-enriched proteins were especially evidenced in the zona radiata interna of late vitellogenic oocytes. Specific lectin binding patterns reflected characteristic differences in the content and distribution of specific sugar moieties expressed in the oocytes during vitellogenesis and final maturation. At the end of vitellogenesis and during final maturation, follicular cells, zona radiata, and cortical alveoli were characterised by a strong increase of specific binding for WGA.  相似文献

Summary Comparative histochemical studies on the fish (Channa maruleus) and amphibian (Bufo stomaticus) oogenesis demonstrate a great similarity in the growth and differentiation of their egg follicle. The ooplasm, germinal vesicle and egg-membranes show distinct morphological and cytochemical changes during previtellogenesis and vitellogenesis.During previtellogenesis the various components of the follicle are engaged in the synthesis of protoplasm as shown by the proliferation of yolk nucleus substance, mitochondria and some lipid bodies in the ooplasm and of nucleoli in the germinal vesicle. The substance of the yolk nucleus consisting of proteins, lipoproteins and RNA first appears adjacent to the nuclear membrane. Numerous mitochondria of lipoprotein composition, and some lipid bodies consisting of unsaturated phospholipids lie in association with the yolk nucleus which forms substratum for the former. The lipid bodies, present inside the germinal vesicle, follicular epithelium, and adjacent to the plasma membrane in association with some pinocytotic vacuoles, have been considered to play a significant role in the active transport of some substances from the environment into the ooplasm and from the latter into the germinal vesicle. The follicular epithelium itself is very poorly developed, negating its appreciable role in the contribution of specific substances into the oocyte, which seem to be contributed by the germinal vesicle showing a considerable development of nuclear sap, basophilic granules and nucleoli consisting of RNA and proteins; many large nucleoli bodily pass into the cytoplasm during the previtellogenesis of Channa, where their substance is gradually dissolved. The intense, diffuse, basophilic substance of the cytoplasm is believed due to free ribosomes described in many previous ultrastructural studies.During vitellogenesis, the various deutoplasmic inclusions, namely carbohydrate yolk, proteid yolk and fatty yolk, are deposited in the ooplasm. The carbohydrate yolk bodies rich in carbohydrates originate in association with the plasma membrane and correspond to vesicles and cortical granules of previous studies. The proteid yolk consisting of proteins and some lipoproteins, and fatty yolk containing first phospholipids and some triglycerides and then triglycerides only are deposited under the influence of yolk nucleus substance, mitochondria and cytoplasm. The mitochondria and yolk nucleus substance foreshadow in some way the pattern of these two deutoplasmic inclusions and persist at the animal pole of mature egg while the other inclusions of previtellogenesis disappear from view. The pigment granules, which also show a gradient from the animal to vegetal pole in Bufo, are also formed in association with yolk nucleus substance and mitochondria. Some glycogen also appears in both the species. The nuclear membrane becomes irregular due to the formation of lobes. The lipid bodies of the germinal vesicle come to lie outside the nuclear membrane, suggesting active transport of some substances into the ooplasm; many nucleoli bodily pass into the ooplasm of Bufo, where they are gradually absorbed. The amount of basophilic granules is considerably increased in the germinal vesicle during vitellogenesis. Various egg-membranes such as outer epithelium, thin theca, single-layered follicular epithelium, zona pellucida or vitelline membrane surround the vitellogenic oocytes. The zona pellucida formed between the oocyte and follicle cells consists of a carbohydrate-protein complex. The follicle cells show lipid droplets, mitochondria and basophilic substance in their cytoplasm. The various changes that occur in the components of the follicle during vitellogenesis seem to be initiated by gonadrotrophins formed under the influence of specific environmental conditions. The author wishes to express sincere appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Gilbert S. Greenwald, who has made the completion of this investigation possible.Ph. D. Population Council Post-doctoral Fellow.  相似文献

The reproductive mode of the female viviparous teleost Poecilia formosa (Poeciliidae) represents the phenomenon known as gynogenesis; that is, parthenogenetic development is initiated by spermatozoa which are needed for physiological activation of the egg and the initiation of gestation, but spermatozoa are prevented from contributing to the genome of the embryo. For the reason that no previous histological analyses of the ovary of this species during the reproductive cycle has been published the present study has been conducted. This study examined the histology of the ovary of P. formosa during nongestation and gestation phases and identified the presence of spermatozoa inside the ovary. Spermatozoa were observed in folds of the ovarian epithelium of P. formosa during both the nongestation and gestation phases. Sperm storage as documented in this study is a very important trait for the gynogenetic viviparous fish P. formosa contributing to the understanding of this species reproduction. J. Viviparous teleosts exhibit two patterns of embryonic nutrition: lecithotrophy (when nutrients are derived from yolk that is deposited in the oocyte during oogenesis) and matrotrophy (when nutrients are derived from the maternal blood stream during gestation). Nutrients contained in oocytes of matrotrophic species are not sufficient to support embryonic development until term. The smallest oocytes formed among the viviparous poeciliid fish occur in the least killifish, Heterandria formosa, these having diameters of only 400 μm. Accordingly, H. formosa presents the highest level of matrotrophy among poeciliids. This study provides histological details occurring during development of its microlecithal oocytes. Five stages occur during oogenesis: oogonial proliferation, chromatin nucleolus, primary growth (previtellogenesis), secondary growth (vitellogenesis), and oocyte maturation. H. formosa, as in all viviparous poeciliids, has intrafollicular fertilization and gestation. Therefore, there is no ovulation stage. The full‐grown oocyte of H. formosa contains a large oil globule, which occupies most of the cell volume. The oocyte periphery contains the germinal vesicle, and ooplasm that includes cortical alveoli, small oil droplets and only a few yolk globules. The follicular cell layer is initially composed of a single layer of squamous cells during early previtellogenesis, but these become columnar during early vitellogenesis. They are pseudostratified during late vitellogenesis and reduce their height becoming almost squamous in full‐grown oocytes. The microlecithal oocytes of H. formosa represent an extreme in fish oogenesis typified by scarce yolk deposition, a characteristic directly related to matrotrophy. J. The coexistence of two common species of predatory cyclopoid copepods, Acanthocyclops robustus and Mesocyclops leuckarti, in a small, eutrophic lake was studied. Both species are of similar size, inhabit the same water layers and have similar seasonal occurrence. A. robustus shows faster embryonic and postembryonic development and produces bigger clutches. Ingestion rates of A. robustus are higher than in M. leuckarti, especially with large prey types and low temperatures. Females of A. robustus are heavily preyed upon by fish. This predation pressure leads to extremely skewed sex ratios, which are unfavourable to population growth. A. robustus is therefore, on balance, favoured in productive lakes. Dominance over M. leuckarti is, however, less clear in warmer years.  相似文献

The endomembranous system of Serrasalmus spilopleura oocyte secondary growth was analysed using structural and ultrastructural cytochemical techniques. In vitellogenic oocytes, the endoplasmic reticulum components, the nuclear envelope intermembranous space, some Golgi dictiossomes, lysosomes, yolk granules, regions of the egg envelope and sites of the follicle cells react to acid phosphatase detection (AcPase). The cortical alveoli, some heterogeneous cytoplasmic structures, regions of the egg envelope, and sites of the follicle cells are strongly contrasted by osmium tetroxide and zinc iodide impregnation (ZIO). The endoplasmic reticulum components, some vesicles, and sites of the follicle cells also react to osmium tetroxide and potassium iodide impregnation (KI). The biosynthetic pathway of lysosomal proteins, such as acid phosphatase, required for vitellogenesis, involves the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, vesicles with inactive hydrolytic enzymes, and, finally, lysosomes. In S. spilopleura oocytes at secondary growth, the endomembranous system takes part in the production of the enzymes needed for vitellogenesis, and in the metabolism of yolk exogenous components (AcPase detection). The endomembranous system compartments also show reduction capacity (KI reaction) and are involved in the metabolism of proteins rich in SH‐groups (ZIO reaction).  相似文献

Histology and histochemistry are useful tools to study reproductive mechanisms in fish and they have been applied in this study. In the bluefin tuna, Thunnus thymus L., oocyte development can be divided into 4 principal phases based on the morphological features of developing oocytes and follicles. The primary growth phase includes oogonia and basophilic or previtellogenic oocytes classified as chromatin-nucleolus and perinucleolus stages. The secondary growth phase is represented by vitellogenic oocytes at early (lipid globule and yolk granule 1), mid (yolk granule 2) and late (yolk granule 3) vitellogenesis stages. The maturation phase involves postvitellogenic oocytes undergoing maturation process. During the spawning period, both postovulatory follicles, which indicate spawning, and atretic follicles can be distinguished in the ovary. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and specially those rich in tyrosine, tryptophan, cystine, arginine, lysine and cysteine, as well phospholipids and/or glycolipids and neutral glycoproteins were detected in yolk granules. Moreover, affinity for different lectins (ConA, WGA, DBA and UEA) was detected in vitellogenic oocytes (yolk granules, cortical alveoli, follicular layer and zona radiata), indicating the presence of glycoconjugates with different sugar residues (Mannose- Man- and/or Glucose -Glc-; N-acetyl-D-glucosamine- GlcNAc- and/or sialic acid- NANA-; N-acetyl-D-galactosamine- GalNAc-; L-Fucose -Fuc-). Histochemical techniques also demonstrated the presence of neutral lipids in globules (vacuoles in paraffin sections) and neutral and carboxylated mucosubstances in cortical alveoli. By using anti-vitellogenin (VTG) serum, immunohistochemical positive results were demonstrated in yolk granules, granular cytoplasm and follicular cells of vitellogenic oocytes. Calcium was also detected in yolk granules and weakly in follicular envelope. In females, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) increased progressively from May, during early vitellogenesis, until June during mid and late vitellogenesis, where the highest values were reached. Subsequently, throughout the maturation-spawning phases (July), GSI decreased progressively reaching the minimal values during recovering-resting period (October).  相似文献

All vertebrate eggs have extracellular matrices, referred to as the zona pellucida in Mus musculus and the vitelline envelope in Xenopus laevis. The mouse zona, composed of three sulfated glycoproteins (ZP1, ZP2, ZP3), is critical for fertilization and early development, and mice lacking a zona pellucida produce no live offspring. The primary structures of mouse ZP1 (623 amino acids), ZP2 (713 amino acids) and ZP3 (424 amino acids) have been deduced from full-length cDNAs, but posttranslational modifications result in mature zona proteins with molecular masses of 200–180 kDa, 140–120 kDa, and 83 kDa, respectively. The vitelline envelope forms a similar structure around Xenopus eggs and contains three glycoproteins that are structurally related (39–48% amino acid similarity) to the three mouse zona proteins. To investigate whether the structural semblances are sufficient to allow incorporation of the mouse zona proteins into the Xenopus vitelline envelope, capped synthetic mRNAs encoding ZP1, ZP2, and ZP3 proteins were injected into the cytoplasm of stage VI Xenopus oocytes. After 20 h of incubation the oocytes were harvested, and posttranslationally modified zona proteins were detected with monoclonal antibodies specific to mouse ZP1, ZP2, and ZP3. The oocytes were imaged with confocal microscopy to detect individual zona proteins in the extracellular matrix of the oocytes, and this localization was confirmed biochemically. Thus the mouse zona proteins appear to have been sufficiently conserved through 350 million years of evolution to be incorporated into the extracellular envelope surrounding Xenopus eggs. The viviparous teleost Heterandria formosa is a remarkable species for its reproductive characters including: (a) the smallest oocyte in viviparous fish species; (b) a high level of matrotrophy with a complex placenta; and (c) the highest level of superfetation. Superfetation involves (d) the continuous development of oocytes and fertilization at the same time with embryos in gestation. The sequential fertilization of oocytes requires (e) storage of spermatozoa in the ovary. Among these characteristics, fertilization is of fundamental interest, specifically the intrafollicular fertilization of poeciliids, species that do not present micropyle, and the consequent formation of the fertilization plug, a structure developed at the periphery of the follicle where the entrance of spermatozoa occurs. Both processes intrafollicular fertilization and formation of the fertilization plug have been rarely described. There is only one study illustrating, the fertilization plug of H. formosa with a drawing. In the context of reproductive aspects of H. formosa, the goal of this study is to describe the morphology of the ovary during insemination, intrafollicular fertilization and development of the fertilization plug. After insemination, spermatozoa enter the ovary and occupy folds of the lamella near follicles of all stages of oogenesis, the delle, where the germinal epithelium establishes contact with the follicular epithelium. The results of the present study provide evidence that both epithelia open at the distal end of the delle, this morphological change allow that the spermatozoa to make contact with the zona pellucida of the oocyte. After fertilization, the delle becomes blocked by proliferation of cells of the germinal epithelium, to form the fertilization plug that persists throughout gestation. Abundant reticular fibers and blood vessels are seen around the fertilization plug. Persistence of the fertilization plug suggests that it could be the site where the juvenile will gain entrance to the ovarian lumen during birth.  相似文献

Cellular aspects of oocyte development of the Mexican rivulus Millerichthys robustus were morphologically described in order to analyze ovarian function and the cellular recruitment dynamics associating it with life history strategies of annual killifishes. Millerichthys is an iteroparous batch spawner with continuous oocyte recruitment and indeterminate fecundity with asynchronous development of the follicles. It has two ovaries of cystovarian type, with a central lumen, which communicates with the outside through the caudal region of the ovary, that is, the gonoduct. From the walls of the ovary, irregular lamellae composed of germinal epithelium and vascularized stroma project. Oogenesis starts with oogonial proliferation, found alone or in nests within the germinal epithelium. The oogonia come into meiosis becoming oocytes and advancing to the chromatin nucleolus stage and to early primary growth stage. Folliculogenesis is completed in the primary growth stage and cortical alveoli step. Follicles moves toward the stroma, but they continue to be attached to the germinal epithelium through the basement membrane until ovulation. The inclusion of fluid yolk in the follicles during the secondary growth stage was observed. During ovulation, the follicle collapsed, the oocyte was released into the lumen, and the constitutive elements of the post-ovulatory follicle complex remained in the stroma.  相似文献

Oocyte maturation is a prerequisite for successful fertilization. Growing evidence suggests that not only the oocyte but also the surrounding zona pellucida has to undergo maturational changes. In the pig, two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis demonstrated an acidic shift of the zona pellucida glycoproteins of about 1.5–2.0 pH units during the maturation process. These findings were corroborated by histological studies that indicated the synthesis of acidic glycoconjugates in the cumulus cells and an increased occurrence of acidic glycans in the zona pellucida after oocyte maturation. In order to provide structural data on prepuberal zona pellucida N-glycosylation, N-glycans were released from prepuberal zona pellucida glycoproteins by N-glycosidase F and studied by mass spectrometry before and after desialylation and treatment with endo-β-galactosidase. Our results verified the presence of high-mannose-type Man5GlcNAc2 compounds as well as diantennary N-glycans as major neutral species, whereas sialylated diantennary and triantennary species constituted the dominant non-sulfated acidic sugar chains. The major acidic N-glycans of prepuberal animals, however, represented mono-sulfated diantennary, triantennary and tetraantennary oligosaccharides carrying, in part, N-acetyllactosamine repeating units as well as additional Neu5Ac or Neu5Gc residues. Glycans comprising more than one sulfate residue were not detected. In contrast to the literature data on zona pellucida glycoprotein-N-glycans of cyclic animals, our data thus reveal a lower degree in glycan sulfation of the prepuberal zona pellucida.  相似文献

The annual histological changes in ovarian morphology (oogenesis, follicular atresia, and corpus luteum) are described for the Mexican lizard Sceloporus grammicus, in two populations that inhabit contrasting environments (vegetation categories, climate, precipitation, and temperature) from Hidalgo State, Mexico. Two germinal beds were situated on the dorsal surface of each ovary of this species. In both the populations, oogenesis involves two major processes: previtellogenesis and vitellogenesis. The histological changes during previtellogenesis are similar to those for other reptilian sauropsids, whereas vitellogenesis differs and the features of this last process are described for the first time. In early previtellogenesis, primary oocytes have fibrillar chromosomes and the ooplasm stains slightly. The primordial follicles are surrounded by a granulosa composed of cuboidal follicular cells. During late previtellogenesis, the oocyte had an eccentric nucleus with lamp‐brush chromosomes and multiple nucleoli. The granulosa becomes multilayered and polymorphic, containing three cell types: small, intermediate, and pyriform. The zona pellucida was homogeneous and clearly observed. In early vitellogenesis, the oocyte showed several small acidophilic granules distributed in the center and the periphery of the oocyte. As vitellogenesis progresses, the yolk platelets move toward the central area of the oocyte and they fuse to form acidophilic and homogeneous yolk. Lipid droplets were distributed irregularly in the ooplasm of the oocyte. In Zacualtipán, the results revealed a strong seasonal reproductive activity. Females had vitellogenic follicles from July to September, and pregnant females were founded from September to March. In Tizayuca, the results showed an unusual pattern of reproductive activity. Females with vitellogenic follicles and pregnant females were found throughout the year, indicating continuous reproduction. We suggest that the observed differences in reproductive activity from these populations indicate adaptative fine tuning in response to local environmental conditions. These results contribute to the knowledge of variation in vitellogenesis and reproductive strategies of this species and among spiny lizards overall. J. All mammalian eggs are surrounded by the zona pellucida, an extracellular coat involved in vital functions during fertilization and early development. The zona pellucida glycoproteins are promising antigenic targets for development of contraceptive vaccines to control pest populations of marsupials in Australia and New Zealand. Our current understanding of the function of the zona pellucida glycoproteins is based almost entirely on the mouse and may not be representative of gamete interactions in all eutherian or marsupial mammals. This study reports the isolation and characterization of the ZP2 gene from the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula). The brushtail possum ZP2 mRNA is 2,182 nucleotides long with an open reading frame coding for a polypeptide chain of 712 amino acids with a molecular mass of 79,542 d. The deduced amino acid sequence of possum ZP2 is 48 to 55% identical to that of eutherian mammals. It shares several structural characteristics including N-linked glycosylation sites, location and number of cysteine residues, and hydropathy profile. The brushtail possum ZP2gene is expressed exclusively in the ovary. Further studies are planned to elucidate the specific site of ZP2 expression within the ovary and its function during fertilization in marsupials. Mol. Reprod. The telencephalon of ray-finned fishes undergoes eversion, which is very different to the evagination that occurs in most other vertebrates. Ventricle morphogenesis is key to build an everted telencephalon. Thus, here we use the apical marker zona occludens 1 to understand ventricle morphology, extension of the tela choroidea and the eversion process during early telencephalon development of four teleost species: giant danio (Devario aequipinnatus), blind cavefish (Astyanax mexicanus), medaka (Oryzias latipes), and paradise fish (Macroposus opercularis). In addition, by using immunohistochemistry against tubulin and calcium-binding proteins, we analyze the general morphology of the telencephalon, showing changes in the location and extension of the olfactory bulb and other telencephalic regions from 2 to 5 days of development. We also analyze the impact of abnormal eye and telencephalon morphogenesis on eversion, showing that cyclops mutants do undergo eversion despite very dramatic abnormal eye morphology. We discuss how the formation of the telencephalic ventricle in teleost fish, with its characteristic shape, is a crucial event during eversion.  相似文献

In this study, the author evaluated two adult age groups of the Mexican rivulus Millerichthys robustus with body size asymmetries to determine the strategies used by an annual killifish during agonistic interactions of different ontogenetic stages. To achieve this goal, the author first characterized the ethogram of agonistic interactions of M. robustus composed of seven behavioural units in males and five behavioural units in females. The author then analysed agonistic interaction strategies used by males and females with body size asymmetries in two groups of different adult ages that represent different ontogenetic stages: (a) just after sexual maturity was reached, at 5 weeks of age, and (b) near natural death, at 24 weeks of age. The agonistic behaviour patterns of M. robustus were compatible with the logic of mutual assessment. Large males had an advantage during their interactions in both age groups, winning all of the encounters. Nonetheless, there was more aggression in 5-week-old fish encounters. In addition, small 24-week-old fish were more aggressive than small 5-week-old fish. These changing strategies may be because of the cost–benefits required during a fight at each ontogenetic stage. In the female encounters, size did not predict winners, as both small and large fish won a similar number of encounters, and some contests remained unresolved regardless of age group. There was a tendency for small females of any age to risk more than males in fights to maintain reproductive fitness.  相似文献
