Synopsis The spawning patterns of four Hawaiian reef fishes with similar reproductive habits, but different biogeographic distributions were studied from September 1980 to October 1981. Two species are Hawaiian endemics [Centropyge potteri (Pomacanthidae) and Chaetodon multicinctus (Chaetodontidae)] and the other two have pan-tropical Pacific distributions [Ctenochaetus strigosus and Zebrasoma flavescens (Acanthuridae)]. All showed increased spawning activity from January to July, the prevalent pattern among a majority of coastal marine fishes in Hawaii. Environmental correlatives to the period of peak reproduction include cycles of (a) daylight length and temperature which probably function as proximate cues and (b) seasonal variations in ocean current patterns which may ultimately affect survival of larvae and dispersal. Peak reproduction takes place during months when (1) mesoscale eddies most likely occur, and (2) the probability is greatest of drifting objects remaining near the islands.  相似文献

The endemic filefish, Pervagor spilosoma, has long been known to recruit infrequently but in large numbers to shallow water habitats in Hawaii. When it does recruit, as it did in 1944, 1975 and 1982–1987, it becomes the most abundant or one of the most abundant species on Hawaiian reefs. At these times of high abundance, juvenile individuals also become abundant in the off-shore pelagic environment and in deeper benthic habitats. The results of two previously published studies and this one show that the last heavy recruitment occurred throughout the Hawaiian Island chain in the period from 1982–1988. The earliest strong recruitment in this interval occurred on the leeward, or northwest Hawaiian Islands in 1982, then on Oahu in 1983, then on the island of Hawaii, at the southeast end of the island chain in 1985. At the Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, sampling site, strong recruitment occurred in 1983–1987. Fish that had recruited in the summer of a year survived less than a year at these shallow (<15 m) sites or moved off the reefs. No other fish species among the 30 species censused in a 20 year period at Kaneohe Bay has shown the extremes of abundance displayed by this species, nor did any other species recruit so strongly in the 1983–1987 period. The latter event suggests that the pattern of recruitment in this species was not solely due to a particular pattern of ocean circulation, because if that were the case, other species would also show strong recruitment. The rarity of large recruitment events in this species, the high density of the recruits, the length of individuals at recruitment, the observation by others of juveniles and possibly young adults in the water column, and the sequential nature of the recruitment down the length of the island chain may in part be the result of metamorphosis in the pelagic environment and a pelagic juvenile stage in this species.  相似文献

The effects of a non-extractive marine reserve on the recruitment dynamics of haemulid fishes and their predators on Barbados coral reefs were studied using visual census and mark-recapture methods. Size and abundance of piscivores (including large adult grunts) known to prey on grunts were greater within the reserve than on adjacent reefs, whereas size and abundance of older juvenile grunts did not differ between protected and exploited reefs. Recruitment and early juvenile abundance were lower within the reserve and were inversely related to predator density (including adult conspecifics). Patterns in density of new recruits may also have been influenced by oceanographic patterns of supply of larvae. Thus, although protection has a significant positive effect on the size and abundance of large carnivorous fishes, higher predation pressure within a reserve may serve to reduce juvenile recruitment within the reserve. At some size/age, cumulative recruitment due to lower size-specific predation mortality results in higher density within the reserve. This increased density is maintained by the absence of fishing mortality within the reserve. Despite maintaining high spawning biomass of several large, commercially exploited species that may export larvae to downstream areas, the Barbados Marine Reserve appears to be a local sink for juvenile grunts.  相似文献

This research investigated the reproductive biology (sex ratio, hermaphroditic pattern, size and age at maturity) of Cephalopholis argus, known locally in Hawaii by its Tahitian name roi. The results suggest that C. argus exhibits monandric protogyny (female gonad differentiation with female to male sex change) with females reaching sexual maturity at 1.2 years (95% c.i .: 0.6, 1.6) and 20.0 cm total length (LT; 95% c.i .: 19.6, 21.2). The female to male sex ratio was 3.9:1. The average age and LT at sex change was 11.5 years (95% c.i .: 11.1, 12.9) and 39.9 cm (95% c.i .: 39.5, 41.2), respectively. Current information on spawning seasonality of this species is incomplete, but based on the occurrence of spawning capable and actively spawning females, spawning probably takes place from May to October. Evidence of lunar spawning periodicity was found, with an increased proportion of spawning capable and actively spawning females, and an increased female gonado‐somatic index during first quarter and full‐moon phases. This information fills a valuable information gap in Hawaii and across the species' native range.  相似文献

Population dynamics of many intertidal organisms are strongly affected by the abundance and distribution of larvae arriving on the shore. In particular, not only absolute numbers of settlers but also the degree of synchronisation of settlement can have a strong influence on whether density-dependent or density-independent processes shape adult shape populations. Temporal variation in rates of settlement and recruitment of the mussel Perna perna on the south coast of South Africa was investigated using a nested spatial design at different temporal scales. Variability in settlement at spring tides was examined at two temporal scales: lunar (to investigate the effect of state of the moon on settlement) and tidal (to investigate the influence of state of the tide on mussel settlement). Recruitment over neap tides was examined at one temporal scale, fortnight (to investigate the effect of date on mussel recruitment).Strong temporal variation was evident for both settlement and recruitment, but not at all time scales. Distinct peaks of settler/recruit abundance were observed during the lunar and neap tide studies. Recruitment intensity differed over the course of the year, and pulsing of recruitment was generally synchronised among locations. However, the strength of pulsing differed dramatically among locations, giving a significant interaction between fortnight and location. The finest temporal scale, investigated in the tidal study, did not reveal a significant effect of the state of the tide on settlement. The state of the moon (new or full) was not significant as a main factor (p = 0.052), although generally more settlers arrived on the shore during new moon. Phase of the moon appeared to have an effect on settler abundances, but only when and where densities were high.  相似文献

Aim This paper describes known patterns in the distributions and relationships of Hawaiian freshwater fishes, and compares these patterns with those exhibited by Hawaii's terrestrial biota. Location The study is based in Hawaii, and seeks patterns across the tropical and subtropical Indo‐west Pacific. Methods The study is based primarily on literature analysis. Results The Hawaiian freshwater fish fauna comprises five species of goby in five different genera (Gobiidae). Four species are Hawaiian endemics, the fifth shared with islands in the western tropical Pacific Ocean. All genera are represented widely across the Indo‐west Pacific. All five species are present on all of the major Hawaiian islands. All five species are amphidromous – their larval and early juvenile life being spent in the sea. Although there has been some local phyletic evolution to produce Hawaiian endemics, there has been no local radiation to produce single‐island endemics across the archipelago. Nor is there evidence for genetic structuring among populations in the various islands. Main conclusions In this regard, the freshwater fish fauna of Hawaii differs from the well‐known patterns of local evolution and radiation in Hawaiian Island terrestrial taxa. Amphidromy probably explains the biogeographical idiosyncrasies of the fish fauna – dispersal through the sea initially brought the fish species to Hawaii, and gene flow among populations, across the archipelago, has hitherto inhibited the evolution of local island endemics, apparently even retarding genetic structuring on individual islands.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on life history variables in perch   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Population structure, recruitment, mortality, life expectancy, age at maturity, gonad development, fecundity, net reproductive rate and energy storage were studied in a perch population exposed to thermal discharge. The experiment was conducted during 1978–1990 in an artificial enclosure at a nuclear power plant on the Baltic Sea coast. Abundance increased after the plant started operating, although the proportion of larger perch dropped to a low level. Recruitment improved, but adult mortality increased. This effect was accentuated as the fishes matured very early and at a very small size, reducing their ability to support a growing gonad in high winter temperatures. During the spawning period, condition dropped to very low levels accompanied by increased mortality. Surviving fish delayed the next spawning by one or more years and reduced their fecundity. Body condition thus improved in large perch at the end of the study period. Life-time fecundity was reduced, and reproductive performance shifted to youner ages.  相似文献

The spawning periodicity of eight fish species was investigated in three English lowland rivers over a 6 year period from patterns in 0+ year fish standard length ( L S) distributions. A single cohort of 0+ year dace Leuciscus leuciscus , roach Rutilus rutilus and perch Perca fluviatilis was observed each year, suggesting that these species spawned only once annually. By contrast, populations of chub Leuciscus cephalus , bleak Alburnus alburnus , bream Abramis brama , gudgeon Gobio gobio and minnow Phoxinus phoxinus were inferred to spawn on more than one occasion each year. Annual and intercatchment variations occurred in the L S distribution patterns of some of the fish species. In chub, for example, although a minimum of two 0+ year cohorts occurred in all years in the River Trent, 'multiple' spawning (either at the individual or population level) was most apparent in 1999, 2003 and 2004. By contrast, 'multiple' spawning events were not evident in all years in the Warwickshire Avon and Yorkshire Ouse, with recruitment presumably based upon a single spawning event in some years. There is effectively a trade-off between early spawning (extended growing season), and the possibility that environmental conditions will impact upon recruitment success, and the potential for reduced overwinter survival of smaller individuals with lower lipid resources from later spawning events. Notwithstanding, fishes as small as 15 mm L S survived the winter in some years, suggesting that progeny from later spawning events may make important contributions to fish recruitment success.  相似文献

Synopsis Spawning by the banded butterflyfish,Chaetodon multicinctus (Chaetodontidae) was observed on coral reefs off Kona, Hawaii. These fish occurred in male-female pairs during normal daytime activities, a behavior which is typical for the family. Courtship is also a paired male-female activity. During spawning, however, other individuals (males?) may intrude on the spawning pair. Spawning typically takes place at least a meter or two above the bottom. The spawning position consists of the male below and behind the female with his snout against the female's ventral flank or anal fin area. Intruding individuals may join in when the pair is in position and about to spawn. Intruders line-up against the male in the same position as he is against his female. The dynamics of larval herring in the north-eastern Gulf ofMaine are reviewed with reference to the important physicaland biological oceanographic processes of the region. Particularattention is given to the apparently conflicting hypothesesof larval drift from the tidally well-mixed spawning areas tonursery areas, and larval retention in spawning areas for aperiod of several months. Both processes have been reportedfor the eastern Maine-Grand Manan spawning area of the Gulfof Maine, but the relative importance of each to larval survivalthrough the winter and recruitment to the juvenile stage isnot clear. Both transport and retention are interpreted in lightof oceanographic processes that might impart variability, especiallybetween years, in the proportion of larvae transported awayversus that retained. Results of recent survey cruises in theGulf of Maine show both hypotheses to have merit. It is suggestedthat (i) interannual differences in slope water intrusions intothe Gulf of Maine as they affect the residual circulation, (ii)the lunar periodicity in the intensity of tidal mixing in relationto hatching times, and (iii) the potential for variable spawninglocations relative to the tidal fronts, may affect the distributionsof herring larvae immediately after hatching in the fall, andmay control the proportion of larvae that are advected awaywith the residual currents versus that retained in the vicinityof spawning. It is also suggested that those processes thataffect larval distributions and survival in the fall are importantin determining the overwintering distributions of larvae inthe Gulf of Maine, where the subtle influences of variable foodregimes and water temperatures could potentially exact largeinterannual differences in winter survival and recruitment tothe juvenile stage.  相似文献

Synopsis A synthesis of ethnobiological, behavioral and physical oceanographic information leads to the conclusion that temperate zone models of reproductive strategy are inapplicable to many fishes of the coastal tropics. Intense predation appears to exert heavy selection pressure on fishes that spend their adult lives in coral, mangrove or tropical seagrass communities. Many exhibit spawning behaviors and spawn at times and locations that favor the transport of their pelagic eggs and pelagic larvae offshore where predation is reduced. This creates a countervailing selection pressure — the need to return the larvae to shallow water once they are ready to colonize their post-larval habitats. Accordingly, spawning is often concentrated at times of the year when prevailing winds or currents are at their weakest, thereby reducing the transport of larvae long distances from where they originated. Spawning is also concentrated in the vicinity of nearshore gyres which similarly favor the ultimate return of the larvae to their natal area. Among these species, therefore, offshore larval dispersal does not seem to be an adaptation for dispersal of the species, but rather an evolutionary response to intense predation pressure in the adult habitats. Lunar reproductive periodicity is more common among these species than has previously been recognized, and is one of the strategies employed to enhance the offshore flushing of eggs and larvae.This paper forms part of the proceedings of a mini-symposium convened at Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Hawaiian dry and mesic forests contain an increasingly rare assemblage of species due to habitat destruction, invasive alien weeds and exotic pests. Two rare Rhamnaceae species in these ecosystems, Colubrina oppositifolia and Alphitonia ponderosa, were examined using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers to determine the genetic structure of the populations and the amount of variation relative to other native Hawaiian species. Relative variation is lower than with other Hawaiian species, although this is probably not a consequence of genetic bottleneck. Larger populations of both species contain the highest levels of genetic diversity and smaller populations generally the least as determined by number of polymorphic loci, estimated heterozygosity, and Shannon's index of genetic diversity. Populations on separate islands were readily discernible for both species as were two populations of C. oppositifolia on Hawai'i island (North and South Kona populations). Substructure among Kaua'i subpopulations of A. ponderosa that were ecologically separated was also evident. Although population diversity is thought to have remained at predisturbance levels, population size continues to decline as recruitment is either absent or does not keep pace with senescence of mature plants. Recovery efforts must focus on control of alien species if these and other endemic dry and mesic forest species are to persist.  相似文献

Patterns of distribution and abundance of coral reef fish depend in part on recruitment of a pelagic larval stage, on subsequent dispersal among habitats, and survival of new recruits. We studied recruitment of five species of Stegastes and two species of Chromis damselfish onto reef habitats of St. Thomas, USVI during one year. The two study sites, Flat Cay and Outer Brass Island, were on the southern and northern sides of St. Thomas, respectively. At both sites, recruitment occurred largely in the summer months, although one species (Stegastes planifrons) showed significant winter recruitment at Flat Cay. The onset of increased summer recruitment in 1992 of other species occurred several weeks later and was shorter in duration at Outer Brass Island than at Flat Cay, perhaps indicating differences in oceanographic conditions (currents etc.) or spawning cycles between sites. The two Chromis species showed lunar periodicity of settlement at Flat Cay. At Flat Cay, recruits of three species (S. leucostictus, S. diencaeus and S. planifrons) were associated with conspecifics possibly due to preferential settlement. Similarly, new recruits were more often found near live coral than coral rubble, and very few occurred on sand habitat. Substratum complexity was a poor predictor of recruitment within a habitat, although larger juveniles of some species were more common on more complex substrate. Contrary to other studies, there were no apparent depth preferences among recruits, although larger juveniles of two Stegastes species were found more often in deeper water. It appears that within habitats, newly arriving larvae may be attracted first to the presence of conspecifics and secondarily take up position adjacent to live coral. Apparent survivorship of some Stegastes species and one Chromis species was higher at Outer Brass Island than at Flat Cay, and may partly compensate for lower recruitment of some species at Outer Brass Island.  相似文献

Knowledge of the biology of native fishes of the Murray-Darling Basin is based largely on studies conducted under hatchery conditions and on a limited number of recreationally important species. From observations that increases in water level in aquaculture ponds initiate spawning in some species, and from limited studies of wild fishes and studies in overseas floodplain river systems, a perception has emerged of the importance of flooding and the flood plain in the life cycles of Murray-Darling fishes in general. However, there is little confirmatory evidence of the use of temporary floodplain habitats by larvae, juveniles or adults. The significance of in-channel habitats, especially for rearing, has received little attention. Murray-Darling fish species can be placed into three life history modes, based mainly on spawning style and time and developmental intervals of larvae at first feeding. Fish in each group may be able to take advantage of floods if the timing is right and prey are plentiful, however, the larvae of some species are able to recruit under non-flood conditions within the main river channel. This forms the basis of the low flow recruitment hypothesis, which attempts to explain why some species spawn during the warmest months and lowest flows and how they are able to recruit under these conditions. This hypothesis is then placed in the context of the current state of knowledge of the relationships between flow and the biology of Murray-Darling fishes, specifically cues for spawning, movement and recruitment. The lack of widespread evidence for floodplain use by any life history interval of fish may be due to a paucity of study, however, there are some fundamental factors, such as the predictability of timing and duration of high flow events as well as the lack of coincidence of high flows and high temperatures in some regions of the Basin, which may be important in determining the use of floodplain habitats by fish.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive behavior of yellowtail damselfish,Microspathodon chrysurus, was studied off the Caribbean coast of Panama to determine if there is a lunar spawning cycle. Male damselfish prepare nest sites on dead coral surfaces within their permanent feeding territories. Spawning occurs at sunrise and lasts for approximately one hour. Males defend the eggs until hatching, which occurs before the morning of the sixth day of incubation. Males spawn only once a day, but may spawn many times within each reproductive phase. Reproductive activity is highest in the time periods from full to new moon. The timing of this lunar cycle differs from those reported for other marine fishes. The spawning pattern is not consistent with common explanations for lunar periodicity that are based on the role of tides or moonlight. Some implications of these results for the organization of tropical reef communities are discussed.  相似文献

Lunar synchronization of spawning was investigated for eight substrate brooding cichlid fishes belonging to the tribe Lamprologini. Their spawning activities all peaked during the second quarter of the lunar cycle. Comparison between their breeding styles and the degrees of spawning synchronization suggested that the nocturnal guarding-efficiency of eggs, especially exposed ones, is improved by the maximal amount of moonlight during full moon and, in species whose young leave the breeding sites about 2 weeks after spawning, the survival of dispersing young is enhanced by the darkness of moonless nights.  相似文献

Pomacentrus wardi Whitley is one species of a guild of territorial herbivorous pomacentrid fishes which compete for space within patches of rubble substrata on reefs of the Great Barrier. An experiment has been made on a series of adjacent patches of rubble to assess the importance of the presence of adult residents on the recruitment and survival of juvenile P. wardi, and on the use of the rubble patch by non-territorial benthic-feeding fishes. Recruitment of juvenile P. wardi, and survival of experimentally added juvenile P. wardi were both greater in patches from which all adult pomacentrids had been removed than in patches with undisturbed adult populations. Patches in which the removal of adults was only partially successful did not show these effects. Experimentally added juveniles survived only poorly, whether in undisturbed patches or in patches first denuded of adults. Denuded patches were visited by greater numbers of roving benthic-feeding fishes than were undisturbed patches. Numbers of adult pomacentrids varied little over a year in undisturbed patches, and recovered within six months in denuded patches. The results are discussed with reference to the coexistence of P. wardi and other members of its guild.  相似文献

Coral reefs worldwide are shifting from high-diversity, coral-dominated communities to low-diversity systems dominated by seaweeds. This shift can impact essential recovery processes such as larval recruitment and ecosystem resilience. Recent evidence suggests that chemical cues from certain corals attract, and from certain seaweeds suppress, recruitment of juvenile fishes, with loss of coral cover and increases in seaweed cover creating negative feedbacks that prevent reef recovery and sustain seaweed dominance. Unfortunately, the level of seaweed increase and coral decline that creates this chemically cued tipping point remains unknown, depriving managers of data-based targets to prevent damaging feedbacks. We conducted flume and field assays that suggest juvenile fishes sense and respond to cues produced by low levels of seaweed cover. However, the herbivore species we tested was more tolerant of degraded reef cues than non-herbivores, possibly providing some degree of resilience if these fishes recruit, consume macroalgae, and diminish negative cues.  相似文献

This study examined factors affecting juvenile recruitment in the tuatua Paphies donacinaon an exposed surf beach in Pegasus Bay, South Island New Zealand between October 1994 and April 1997. Tuatua recruitment followed female gonad maturation with a delay of approximately 2 months. Juveniles (1–10 mm shell length) occurred throughout the study except during June and July 1995 (winter). Average densities (m–2 ) were 28 in winter, 230 in spring, 174 in summer and 108 in autumn. There was high juvenile mortality and/or emigration and the maximum average density of (741m–2 ) was recorded in November 1996. Recruit densities were similar between years except during winter. Adult tuatua populations were dominated by modal shell lengths greater than 70 mm.There was no significant relationship between adult and juvenile recruit length. Recruit length decreased with recruit density suggesting density dependent competition for space or food resources. Juvenile density increased following increases in food availability (chlorophyll a concentration) but average length of juveniles did not correlate directly with any of the environmental variables. Recruit density decreased as the modal adult length increased and recruit length reduced when adult populations had a high condition index. Because larvae, juveniles and adult are mobile the beach population is characteristic of an open system with adults and juveniles from the resident population affecting post-settlement density- dependent processes.  相似文献
