Analysis of fast chlorophyll fluorescence rise OJIP was carried out to assess the impact of diuron, paraquat and flazasulfuron on energy fluxes and driving forces for photosynthesis in Lemna minor. Results showed that diuron and paraquat treatment produced major changes in electron transport in active reaction centres (RCs). However, diuron had a more pronounced effect on the yield of electron transport per trapped exciton (ψ0) than on the yield of primary electron transport (φP0)(φP0) showing that dark reactions are more sensitive to diuron than light-dependent reactions. In contrast, paraquat treatment effects were not due to a target-specific action on those dark and light reactions. Paraquat also induced a marked surge in the total absorption of photosystem II (PSII) antenna chlorophyll per active RC displaying a large increase of the dissipation of excess energy through non-photochemical pathways (thermal dissipation processes). Flazasulfuron induced a slight decrease of both the total driving force for photosynthesis and the quantum yield of electron transport beyond QA combined to a small but significant increase of the non-photochemical energy dissipation per RC (DI0/RC). We conclude that energy fluxes and driving force for photosynthesis generate useful information about the behaviour of aquatic plant photosystems helping to localize different target sites and to distinguish heterogeneities inside the PSII complexes. Regardless of the active molecule tested, the DFABS, φE0φE0, DI0/RC and/or ET0/RC parameters indicated a significant variation compared to control while φP0φP0 (FV/FM) showed no significant inhibition suggesting that those parameters are more sensitive for identifying a plant’s energy-use efficiency than the maximum quantum yield of primary PS II photochemistry alone.  相似文献

Lemna minor fronds were grown on nutrient only, or nutrient plus 10?6M abscisic acid (ABA) for 2 or 8 days. After various 14CO2 pulse-chase time periods, the fronds were harvested and the photosynthetic products separated into acidic, lipid, residue, sugar and amino acid fractions. Compared with the control fronds, total 14C-fixation was 15% higher in the 2 day ABA-treatment and 6% lower in the 8 day ABA-treatment. This pattern was reflected in all the fractions examined, and it appeared that ABA did not alter the distribution of 14C between the photosynthetic products during the 14CO2 pulse. During the chase, less 14C was lost from the carbohydrate fractions in the ABA-treated fronds than in the control fronds. The results indicate that the previously reported ABA-mediated increase in carbohydrate levels was a consequence of decreased degradation rather than an increase in synthesis from assimilated carbon.  相似文献

Rat hepatoma cells accumulate considerably less 2-aminoisobutyrate after cultivating in the absence of serum the change in rate of aminoisobutyrate uptake takes place within 1 h of serum starvation. Starvation of amino acids by contrast raises aminoisobutyrate uptake in the presence or absence of serum, but the cells are much less responsive to amino acid supply than to availability of serum. Phosphate (10 mM) reduced aminoisobutyrate uptake by cells grown in serum to that exhibited by serum-starved cells. Aminoisobutyrate uptake by cells grown in serum was reduced by glycine, proline, alanine, serine, glutamine, methylaminoisobutyrate and 2-aminonorbornane-2-carboxylate, the effects of methylaminoisobutyrate and 2-aminonorbornane-2-carboxylate being additive. However, similar inhibition phenomena were not seen for cells deprived of serum where aminoisobutyrate uptake tended to a relatively constant level insensitive to inhibitory influences, yet substantially greater than that arising by simple diffusion. The comparative insensitivity of our hepatoma line when starved of serum to competition and repression phenomena is in contrast to findings of others. Our results also suggest a lack of clear delineation of specificities for the A and L transport systems as usually defined.  相似文献

Evapotranspiration of the freshwater macrophytes Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms and Lemna minor L. was examined in tank cultures in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Evapotranspiration of both species during the year 1979 was significantly correlated with open water evaporation, solar radiation and mean temperature. Evapotranspiration of Eichhornia fluctuated by ca. 40% when its canopy structure was varied by manipulating plant stocking density or nutrient availability. Similar variations in canopy structure which commonly occur in natural stands of Eichhornia limit the value of evapotranspiration estimates made over a wide temporal or areal basis.  相似文献

Caulerpa taxifolia, an invasive species elsewhere in the world, is native to Moreton Bay where its distribution has been increasing in recent years. In Australia, dense beds of C. taxifolia are predominantly found in areas of low light and high nutrients (low water quality). Monitoring data from Moreton Bay suggests that native C. taxifolia is not directly replacing seagrass, but that there is a successional trend of seagrass loss and subsequent C. taxifolia colonization. The current study examined responses of C. taxifolia in relation to changes in environmental conditions using ambient water quality and a light/nutrient manipulative experiment. In the ambient water quality experiment we found that C. taxifolia grew significantly faster in areas with higher light (lower turbidity). The manipulative experiment demonstrated that nutrients stimulate C. taxifolia growth, however, light availability and seasonality appear to influence the response of C. taxifolia growth to nutrients in Moreton Bay. These findings suggest that C. taxifolia is unlikely to colonize seagrass beds in areas with high light and low nutrients; however, in areas with moderate light and moderate to high nutrients C. taxifolia and seagrass are likely to coexist.  相似文献

Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain increases in plant nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations with latitude: (i) geochemical limitation to P availability in the tropics and (ii) temperature driven variation in growth rate, where greater growth rates (requiring greater nutrient levels) are needed to complete growth and reproduction within shorter growing seasons in temperate than tropical climates. These two hypotheses were assessed in one forest type, intertidal mangroves, using fertilized plots at sites between latitudes 36º S and 27º N. The N and P concentrations in mangrove leaf tissue increased with latitude, but there were no trends in N : P ratios. Growth rates of trees, adjusted for average minimum temperature showed a significant increase with latitude supporting the Growth Rate Hypothesis. However, support for the Geochemical Hypothesis was also strong; both photosynthetic P use efficiency and nutrient resorption efficiency decreased with increasing latitude, indicating that P was less limiting to metabolism at the higher latitudes. Our study supports the hypothesis that historically low P availability in the tropics has been an important selective pressure shaping the evolution of plant traits.  相似文献

Metabolic profiling of Lemna minor whole plants cultivated in proline and sucrose at various concentrations was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry coupled with multivariate statistical analysis. In total, 46 compounds including alkaloids, amino acids, fatty acids, organic acids, phenolics, phytosterols, purines, and sugars were assigned, and the relative levels of these metabolites were compared in the L. minor whole plant samples. Free-radical scavenging and tyrosinase inhibitory activities were also investigated in L. minor whole plants cultivated in proline and sucrose at various concentrations. The whole plants cultivated in 3% sucrose and 0.5 mM proline for 42 days exhibited the highest antioxidative and tyrosinase inhibitory activities, and biomass accumulation. Total phenolic content and cinnamic acid content were also highest under those conditions, which might have contributed to the free-radical scavenging and tyrosinase inhibitory activities. There were strong correlations between free-radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content, and between tyrosinase inhibition activity and cinnamic acid content in L. minor whole plants cultivated under various conditions.  相似文献

The uptake of zinc (Zn) by the duckweed Lemna gibba L., native to the north-east region of Algeria, was investigated in quarter Coïc solutions enriched with 6.0, 10.0, 14.0 and 18.0 mg l−1 of Zn supplied as zinc sulphate (ZnSO4). Zinc concentrations were measured in the water daily and in duckweed biomass at the end of the experiments. These results showed that under experimental conditions (pH = 6.0 ± 0.1, T = 21 ± 1 °C, photoperiod = 12 h/j), L. gibba was able to accumulate in its biomass 4.23; 15.62; 23.88 and 25.81 mg g−1 DM, respectively for the four initial concentrations selected. At these concentrations, the metal removed percentages were 61–71%. The mass balance performed on the system showed that about 49–68% of Zn (depending on the initial concentration in water) was removed by precipitation as zinc phosphate. The results showed that this aquatic plant can be successfully used for Zn removal.  相似文献

Amino acids and glucosamine are present on the surface of Heliothis zea larvae. The amino acid compositions vary among instars and with time following completion of the gross molting process. Larvae collected from ears of corn have many surface amino acids. All amino acid combinations found on larval surfaces are sufficient for initiation of germination and growth by Beauveria bassiana. Amines and peptides are also present; these do not inhibit germination of B. bassiana or Aspergillus niger.  相似文献

The effects of turbulence velocity on Egeria densa Planchon was studied for 12 weeks using mechanically oscillating grid-generated turbulence without mean flow. The root-mean-square of the turbulence velocity fluctuations (u′) ranged from 1.62 ± 0.44 to 2.86 ± 0.8 cm s−1 (high turbulence), 1.36 ± 0.2 to 1.86 ± 0.78 cm s−1 (medium turbulence) and 0.67 ± 0.12 to 0.81 ± 0.16 cm s−1 (low turbulence). The control was subjected to gentle manual mixing once a day. Shoot elongation was significantly reduced with increasing turbulence intensity, and the endogenous indole acetic acid (IAA) concentration was significantly decreased with increasing turbulence intensity and exposure time. The plants exposed to high turbulence showed a 64.6% decrease in endogenous IAA concentration compared to the control, while it was decreased only 26.9% in plants exposed to low turbulence. IAA and cytokinin catabolism was increased, and there was an increase in the hydrogen peroxide concentration of the tissues, which triggered peroxidase activity. The total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a content decreased with the time of exposure. Although the flow turbulence negatively affected plant growth and metabolism, all of the plants survived for the experimental period.  相似文献

The effect of growth rate, body weight, age, and season on ovarian development and maturation was investigated for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) reared in the laboratory over 10 months, for each of two consecutive years, 1978–1980. Cod were also collected from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Scotian Shelf, Georges Bank, the Flemish Cap, and the N.E. Newfoundland Shelf.The state of maturity was recognized by oocyte size. Stage I oocytes did not vary in size with growth rate, season, age, or maturity, while the size of stage II oocytes was positively correlated with maturity and negatively correlated with maximum stage of development achieved. Ovarian wall thickness was positively correlated with age and maturity.The frequency distribution of stage I and II oocytes distinguished the state of maturation, with cod that would mature by the next spawning season having a minimum of 20% (x? = 42%) of their oocytes at stage II or greater level of development.Maturing 3-yr-old cod had greater life specific growth rates than immature 3-yr-olds, but growth rates during the third year itself were not significantly different. A hypothesis of a three-part density-dependent mechanism controlling fecundity is postulated. Future reductions in partial recruitment and total fecundity are predicted for the Gulf of St. Lawrence cod stock based on calculated growth rates for Gulf cod in 1979.  相似文献

The combined effect of salinity and temperature on Spirorbis spirorbis L. and Circeus spirillum L. larvae from the White Sea was studied in the laboratory experiments. In the White Sea, S. spirorbis is distributed through the depth of 1-20 m and is affected by all varieties of fluctuations in salinity and temperature. C. spirillum lives in more wide range of depths 1-55 m and is more stenohaline. S. spirorbis larvae are sufficiently more resistant to the low salinity (10‰) than C. spirillum larvae. Both species are stenothermic. Highest survivorship of S. spirorbis larvae was marked under 5 °C in all experimental salinities. Under temperature treatments of 10-15 °C, the larval survivorship was sufficiently restricted in all salinities. Highest survivorship of C. spirillum larvae was also marked under 5 °C but in more narrow salinity range.The number of larvae undergoing metamorphosis in both species was very low, only about 10% of the total number. Highest number of successful attachments in both species was marked in high salinities (25-30‰) and does not exceed 25% of survivors. Experimental data suggests that salinity and temperature affect directly general survivorship of the larvae and secondary-attachment and metamorphosis processes.  相似文献

In many shallow coastal areas worldwide, several species of opportunistic macroalgae (mainly Chlorophyta) have an excessive growth, as a consequence of eutrophication processes. Therefore, bloom-forming macroalgae become the dominant primary producers within these coastal systems. However, frequently the ecology and the ecophysiology of adult macroalgae have been insufficient to explain their seasonal abundances. Thus, it is essential to understand the factors that regulate the germination and growth of spores of opportunistic green macroalgae. In the present work, we assessed the effects of nutrients (N and P), salinity and light on the germination and growth of Enteromorpha spores. Overall, the results highlight the fact that, such as for adult macroalgae, spore germination and growth are adversely affected by low salinities. Growth of the spores is significantly decreased at 5 psu, while salinities of 20 and, especially of 35 psu, clearly promote the spore growth. Additionally, Enteromorpha spores seem to be particularly sensitive to PO4-P limitation and to NH4-N toxicity, which suggests a higher sensitivity to the variation of external nutrient concentrations than adult macroalgae. The present results contribute to increase the understanding about the factors that control macroalgal growth at its early phases of development. In particular, the results suggest that the growth of spores from opportunistic green macroalgae is strongly salinity-dependent. Consequently, in highly hydrodynamic systems such as most shallow estuaries, salinity variations may play a determinant role in the yearly abundances of green macroalgae, since it controls macroalgal growth from the spores to the adults.  相似文献

Floating Pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides L.fil.), a native to North America and naturalized in Central and South America, is an invasive aquatic weed in western Europe and several other regions worldwide. H. ranunculoides settles primarily in stagnant to slow-flowing waters (e.g. ditches, canals, rivers, lakes and ponds). The species prefers sunny and nutrient-rich sites and forms dense interwoven mats, which can quickly cover the surface of infested waters. In this study, the effect of three different water levels on growth of Floating Pennywort was investigated. Plants were cultivated on high-nutrient soils under waterlogged, semi-drained and drained conditions. Highest relative growth rates (RGR) of 0.097±0.004 g g−1 dw d−1 were reached under waterlogged conditions. This was significantly higher than RGR of plants cultivated semi-drained and drained. Floating Pennywort showed some phenological adaptations to drained soil conditions, including significant differences in the relative amounts of leaf, petiole and shoot biomass, whilst the relative amount of root biomass was not significantly influenced by the water level. Furthermore, Floating Pennywort reached under drained conditions lower relative water contents (RWC) of leaves, petioles and shoots, a significant shorter length of internodes, a significant lower extent of shoot porosity (POR), a lower chlorophyll content and an increased Chla:Chlb ratio. In addition, maximum gas exchange of drained cultivated plants is significantly lower, due to strongly decreased leaf conductance under reduced water availability. Overall, H. ranunculoides showed ability to grow under different water levels, but performed best under waterlogged conditions.  相似文献

The role of juvenile hormone (JH) in the morphological colour adaptation of pupae of Pieris brassicae controlled by environmental factor was analyzed. First the effects of JH I and its analogue, Farnesyl-Methyl-Ether (FME) were tested. Secondly the JH-titres of the last instar larvae were measured under various light conditions which influence the future pigmentation of the pupae.During the sensitive period, which occurs before pupation, blue light (410 nm) produces the strongest, darkness medium, and yellow light (570 nm) the lightest pigmentation of the pupae.JH I as well as FME has an inhibiting effect on the formation of the black spots in the cuticle. However, this effect only becomes apparent (a) if the insects are kept under blue light during the sensitive period (which normally leads to a strong black pigmentation) and (b) only when these animals were treated with JH I or FME either at the beginning, or 10 hr after the beginning of the sensitive period. In the last larvae instar, JH could be found only during the sensitive period. Fourteen hours after the beginning of the sensitive period the JH concentration reaches a maximum of 30–100 pg JH per insect. The JH-titre resulting from blue light conditions is significantly different from those of the larvae kept under white or yellow light. An additional maximum of 60 pg JH per animal was found 8 hr/after the beginning of the sensitive period. Obviously, JH affects the process of pigmentation of the pupae, but the described results are not sufficient to explain thoroughly the regulation of pigmentation modified by environmental factors. Growth of larvae of Acheta domesticus to the adult stage on an artificial diet was improved significantly by the addition of 0.1% rutin to the diet. Fecundity was also increased. These results cannot be explained by a stimulation of feeding by rutin. They appear to be due to an effect on the utilization of the food, brought about possibly by an action on gut movement, on gut transport or on the microbiol flora.  相似文献
