Despite their greater familiarity as fossils, stalked crinoids, or sea lilies, remain important components of hard-substrate assemblages at bathyal depths in both tropical western Atlantic and Pacific regions. To determine stalk growth rates, specimens collected along the western margin of Little Bahama Bank using the submersibles Johnson Sea Link I and II were measured, tagged with color-coded cable ties, returned to the sea floor either to the site at which they were collected or to different habitats or depths, and recovered several months to over a year later. This paper examines stalk growth rates in Neocrinus decorus, Cenocrinus asterius, and the subspecies of Endoxocrinus parrae (E. parrae parrae, E. parrae prionodes and E. parrae carolinae) and their variations relative to depth and current flow. Studies were carried out at three different depth sites: 249 m, 372-435 m and 540-576 m. N. decorus produces substantially more stalk per year than any subspecies of E. parrae or C. asterius (10-17 cm y− 1 versus no more than 3.6 cm y− 1) but contributes no more than twice as much skeletal volume to the sediment because of its more slender stalk. To examine environmental control of growth, E. parrae parrae was transplanted beyond its local depth range to the habitat at which deeper-dwelling E. parrae prionodes occurs (572 m). E. parrae parrae grew at 0.6 ± 0.4 cm y− 1 (n = 6) here, significantly more slowly than in 404 m and more slowly than E. parrae prionodes (2.1 ± 0.6 cm y− 1; n = 4), supporting the hypothesis that these two morphs exhibit distinct growth strategies. Growth rates for E. parrae parrae and N. decorus do not differ significantly between adjacent high and lower current-velocity habitats at the same depth, although both exhibit significantly shorter stalk lengths and crown elevations on raised topography apparently subject to stronger flow.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the role of hypoxic conditions of overlying water in the benthic flux and speciation of Hg, we analyzed sediment cores from hypoxic or oxic sites downstream from a sewage outfall in the Damyang Riverine Wetland, Korea. Each core was analyzed for total Hg (THg), monomethylmercury (MMHg), and elemental Hg (Hg0) from sediment, and for THg and MMHg from pore water. Hypoxic conditions of the overlying water near the sewage outfall were associated with a peak production of Hg0, but the lowest production of MMHg, in the upper 2 cm sediments. The benthic fluxes of THg and MMHg were estimated at 130-2109 ng m−2 day−1 and −12 to 260 ng m−2 day−1, respectively. The order of MMHg flux from sediment to overlying water at each site did not follow the order of MMHg concentration in sediment, but was highest in hypoxic water conditions. The results suggest that maintaining oxic conditions in wetland water is important for decreasing the transfer of MMHg from sediment into overlying water.  相似文献

The copper (II) complex of a simple pyridine- and amide-containing copolymer serves as an effective catalyst for heterogeneous hydrolysis of the prototypical phosphodiester substrate bis(p-nitrophenyl)phosphate at pH 8.0 and 25 °C. The catalysis has a first-order rate constant of kcat = 8.3 × 10−6 s−1, corresponding to a catalytic proficiency of 75-thousand folds relative to the uncatalyzed hydrolysis with a rate constant of k0 = 1.1 × 10−10 s−1 in aqueous buffer solution at pH 8.0. This observation suggests that polymers can be designed to include various functional groups feasible for effective metal-centered catalysis of phosphodiester hydrolysis.  相似文献

The seasonal and spatial dynamics of two groups of macroalgae, drift algae and rhizophytes, commonly found in tropical seagrass meadows were studied. The aim of this study was to provide insight into how freshwater discharges may be altering seagrass-dominated nearshore tropical habitats. Species composition, biomass, and percent cover of macroalgae were collected at six Thalassia testudinum König dominated sites within Biscayne Bay, Florida, representing three salinity regimes: canal-influenced, natural sheet-flow, and oceanic conditions. Mean annual salinities in these three regimes correspond to 10, 25 and 35 psu, respectively, with much greater variability in the canal and sheet-flow regimes, than in the oceanic condition. There were distinct changes in the composition of the macroalgal community along this salinity gradient. Drift algae (Chondria spp., Laurencia spp.) were most commonly found at canal-disturbed sites (10–85 g m−2), while rhizophytic calcareous green algae (Halimeda spp., Penicillus spp.) were most abundant at the higher salinity oceanic sites (20–105 g m−2). Seasonal patterns exhibited by the two groups differed also, with drift algae being more abundant in the cooler dry-season months, while rhizophytic algae were more abundant during the warmer wet-season months. These periods of higher abundance correlated with higher growth rates (drift = 2.3% day−1, rhizophytes = 0.85% day−1) measured in representative species for each group. Grazing rates on drift algae were found to be low for tropical habitats and did not differ much between canal (0.44% h−1) and oceanic sites (0.42% h−1).  相似文献

This study dealt with the decomposition and nutrient release from the halophytes Atriplex portulacoides, Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Limoniastrum monopetalum, and Spartina densiflora, the dominant species in the Castro Marim salt marsh, Portugal. Environmental effects on decomposition were also assessed. The study was carried out for one year using the in situ litterbag technique. S. densiflora showed a lower decomposition rate (k = 0.003 day−1) than the other study species (k = 0.005-0.009). Study species showed similar decomposition patterns, that is, the weight loss mostly occurred during the autumn-winter period (study beginning in November). This indicates that temperature in this period did not hamper the decomposition process. The decomposition rate was positively affected by the initial N concentration (r2 = 0.87, P < 0.05) and negatively by the C:N ratio (r2 = 0.86, P < 0.05) in decomposing materials. At the end of the study, S. densiflora and L. monopetalum, the species with lower initial N concentrations, retained much higher proportion of initial N (89-109%) than the others (5-14%). Also, S. densiflora with the lowest P concentration retained higher proportion of initial P (48%) than the others (5-20%). Release of K and Mg were also slower from S. densiflora and was associated with their initial low concentration in this species. The lowest Mn release was observed from A. macrostachyum and also in relation to the lowest initial concentration. Our study supports the hypothesis that decomposition patterns of marsh species are mostly associated with differences regarding their morphology and chemical composition. Given the higher resistance of S. densiflora to decomposition, its progressive spreading may result in accumulation of organic detritus overtime in invaded salt marshes.  相似文献

Two conceptual models of plant zonation in peatland lakes are given. The first represents vegetation on slightly sloping substrate (N < 0.2) in shallow and relatively large lakes. The vegetation is not diverse (H′ = 0.0 ± 0.01). The frequency and biomass of the dominant (Sphagnum denticulatum) correlate positively with lake size, and negatively with depth and substrate slope. They are also correlated with water transparency and water color (r = −0.53), concentrations of total organic carbon (r = −0.43), Ca2+ (r = 0.40) and humic acids (r = −0.46), and redox potential (r = 0.44). The second model represents vegetation on steep peat walls (N > 0.3) in deep, usually small lakes. Plants occur only on the upper part of the peat wall or form a multispecies curtain hanging from the lip of peat at the top. Species diversity in this scenario is higher (H′ = 0.18 ± 0.17). The curtains usually are composed of mosses such as Warnstorfia exannulata, S. cuspidatum and S. riparium, and vascular plants are rare. The frequency and biomass of bryophytes in this type of structure are related to substrate slope (r = 0.56), lake depth (r = 0.56), Ca2+ concentration (r = −0.69) and water color (r = −0.51). In both models, plant biomass is correlated with temperature (r = −0.78), irradiance (r = −0.64) and water oxygenation (r = −0.54).  相似文献

Crude glycerol is a major byproduct of the biodiesel industry; previous research has proved the feasibility of producing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n − 3) through fermentation of the algae Schizochytrium limacinum on crude glycerol. The objective of this work is to investigate the cell growth kinetics, substrate utilization efficiency, and DHA production of the algae through a continuous culture. Steady-state biomass yield, biomass productivity, growth yield on glycerol, specific glycerol consumption rate, and fatty acid composition were investigated within the range of dilution rate (D) from 0.2 to 0.6 day−1, and the range of feed crude glycerol concentration (S0) from 15 to 120 g/L. The maximum specific growth rate was determined as 0.692 day−1. The cells had a true growth yield of 0.283 g/g but with a relatively high maintenance coefficient (0.2216 day−1). The highest biomass productivity of 3.88 g/L-day was obtained at D = 0.3 day−1 and S0 = 60 g/L, while the highest DHA productivity (0.52 g/L-day) was obtained at D = 0.3 day−1 and S0 = 90 g/L due to the higher DHA content at S0 = 90 g/L. The biomass and DHA productivity of the continuous culture was comparable to those of batch culture, while lower than the fed-batch culture, mainly because of the lower DHA content obtained by the continuous culture. Overall, the results show that continuous culture is a powerful tool to investigate the cell growth kinetics and physiological behaviors of the algae growing on biodiesel-derived crude glycerol.  相似文献

Kinetics of the reaction of octacarbonyl dicobalt with ethyl diazoacetate leading to [μ2-{ethoxycarbonyl(methylene)}-μ2-(carbonyl)-bis(tricarbonyl-cobalt)] (Co-Co) (1), dinitrogen, and carbon monoxide were investigated at 10 °C in heptane solution. The initial rate of the reaction was measured by following both the gas evolution and the decrease of the octacarbonyl dicobalt concentration. The rate is first order with respect to octacarbonyl dicobalt and a complex order with respect to ethyl diazoacetate and carbon monoxide depending on the ratio of their concentrations. This is in accord with the formation of a heptacarbonyl dicobalt reactive intermediate (k1 (10 °C) = (1.22 ± 0.06) × 10−3 s−1) for which carbon monoxide and ethyl diazoacetate compete (k−1/k2 (10 °C) = 1.34 ± 0.07).  相似文献

Human serum albumin (HSA) is a monomeric allosteric protein. Here, the effect of ibuprofen on denitrosylation kinetics (koff) and spectroscopic properties of HSA-heme-Fe(II)-NO is reported. The koff value increases from (1.4 ± 0.2) × 10−4 s−1, in the absence of the drug, to (9.5 ± 1.2) × 10−3 s−1, in the presence of 1.0 × 10−2 M ibuprofen, at pH 7.0 and 10.0 °C. From the dependence of koff on the drug concentration, values of the dissociation equilibrium constants for ibuprofen binding to HSA-heme-Fe(II)-NO (K1 = (3.1 ± 0.4) × 10−7 M, K2 = (1.7 ± 0.2) × 10−4 M, and K3 = (2.2 ± 0.2) × 10−3 M) were determined. The K3 value corresponds to the value of the dissociation equilibrium constant for ibuprofen binding to HSA-heme-Fe(II)-NO determined by monitoring drug-dependent absorbance spectroscopic changes (H = (2.6 ± 0.3) × 10−3 M). Present data indicate that ibuprofen binds to the FA3-FA4 cleft (Sudlow’s site II), to the FA6 site, and possibly to the FA2 pocket, inducing the hexa-coordination of HSA-heme-Fe(II)-NO and triggering the heme-ligand dissociation kinetics.  相似文献

Studies examining recruitment processes for soft-sediment macroinvertebrate fauna in intermittent estuaries are rare and most studies of active habitat selection have been tested in the laboratory rather than the field. The present field study examined whether recruitment of the infaunal bivalve Soletellina alba was influenced by water depth and sediment particle size in the intermittent Hopkins River estuary, southern Australia. The number of recruits in sediment trays differed between water depths, but active habitat selection was not evident across treatments of varying sediment particle size. The use of sediments with varying particle sizes also provided an opportunity to identify potential discontinuities in body-size distributions of recruits associated with varying habitat architecture. The length (mm) of recruits was converted to the same scale used to express sediment particle size (i.e. phi units: ? = − log2 of sediment particle size). The size of recruits differed across water depths, but did not differ across treatments with fine (? = 3) versus coarse (? = 1) sediment, and no relationships were apparent between bivalve size and sediments consisting of varying particle size. These patterns of recruitment do not correspond with the distribution of adult S. alba within the Hopkins River estuary. Previous sampling has shown that abundances of juvenile and adult S. alba are variable across time, site and water depth, but are often greater at the deeper water depth (1.05 m below the Australian Height Datum). However, recruitment during the present study was greatest at the shallower water depth (0.05 m below AHD), and the apparent absence of active habitat selection suggests that the distribution of adults is unlikely to be attributable to differences in recruitment associated with sediments of varying particle size.  相似文献

Current knowledge about the abundance, growth, and primary production of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Ascherson is biased towards shallow (depth <3 m) meadows although this species also forms extensive meadows at larger depths along the coastlines. The biomass and primary production of a C. nodosa meadow located at a depth of 8–11 m was estimated at the time of maximum annual vegetative development (summer) using reconstruction techniques, and compared with those available from shallow meadows of this species. A depth-referenced data base of values at the time of maximum annual development was compiled to that end. The vegetative development of C. nodosa at 8–11 m depth was not different from that achieved by shallow (depth <3 m) meadows of this species. Only shoot density, which decreased from 1637 to 605 shoots m−2, and the annual rate of elongation of the horizontal rhizome, which increased from 23 to 71 cm apex−1 year−1, were different as depth increased from <3 to 8–11 m. Depth was a poor predictor of the vegetative development and primary production of C. nodosa. The biomass of rhizomes and roots decreased with depth (g DW m−2 = 480 (±53, S.E.) − 32 (±15, S.E.) depth (in m); R2 = 0.12, F = 4.65, d.f. = 35, P = 0.0381) which made total biomass of the meadow to show a trend of decrease with depth but the variance of biomass data explained by depth was low. The annual rate of elongation of the horizontal rhizome showed a significant positive relationship with depth (cm apex−1 year−1 = 18 (±5.1, S.E.) + 5.0 (±1.33, S.E.) depth (in m); R2 = 0.50, F = 14.07, d.f. = 14, P = 0.0021). As shoot size and growth did not change significantly with depth, the reduction of shoot density should drive any changes of biomass and productivity of C. nodosa as depth increases. The processes by which this reduction of C. nodosa abundance with depth occur remain to be elucidated.  相似文献

The aquation of the title complex cation in aqueous perchloric acid proceeded via two steps, both postulated to be the proton attack on the oxygen atom which binds the acetate ligand to the metal centre, followed by Fe-O bond cleavage. This was followed by rapid decomposition to produce aqueous iron(III) and acetate ions. The first-order rate constants for the first and second steps at 25 °C are: k1 = (4.16 ± 0.58) × 10−2 s−1 and k2 = (2.09 ± 0.42) × 10−3 s−1, respectively, and their corresponding activation parameters are . The spontaneous hydrolysis rate constants for the first and second steps were also determined at 25 °C and ionic strength of 1 mol dm−3 and they are k0 = (3.10 ± 0.82) × 10−3 s−1 and , respectively. The corresponding activation parameters are .  相似文献

Over the course of a growing season (April–October) water quality (water temperature, light, salinity, dissolved oxygen) and reproductive phenology (biomass, production of flowering shoots and seed pods, seed bank densities) were quantified in three Vallisneria americana beds in Nanjemoy Creek, MD, a tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. Clonal production of V. americana biomass increased at all sites when water temperatures rose above 25 °C. Flowering occurred during peak biomass (August–September) and resulted in the production of up to 16,000 seeds m−2 at the end of the growing season. However, observed seed bank densities represented <1% of seed production. Laboratory experiments quantified the effects of dissolved oxygen (0.29–8.00 mg l−1), light (0–160 μmol m2 s−1), temperature (13–29 °C), salinity (0.1–17.4 psu), sediment composition (3–86% sand; 0.9–8.3% sediment organic content), and burial depth (0.2–10 cm) on V. americana seed germination. Germination of V. americana seeds was enhanced (greater overall germination and shorter time to germination) under oxygenated conditions (8.00 mg l−1), temperatures >22 °C, salinities of <1 psu, and in sediments composed of ≤3% organic content and >40% sand. Light (<160 μmol m−2 s−1) and burial depth (0.2–10 cm) had no significant effects on germination. Temperatures most favorable for seed germination (>22 °C) occurred in June, 2 months in the growing season just prior to development of peak vegetative standing stock. Seedlings were therefore at a distinct disadvantage to plants developed from over wintering buds. A lack of viable seed retention and inadequate environmental conditions at critical times in the growing season may be limiting seed germination success and subsequent seedling establishment within V. americana beds in the Chesapeake Bay. However, ungerminated seeds were found to maintain high viability, especially at salinities of 10 psu that can have significant negative effects of shoot growth survival. This suggests that seeds may serve as a source of reproductive material for bed recovery after periods of drought or other stressful conditions in estuarine systems.  相似文献

Cytochromes c6 and f react by three et mechanisms under similar conditions. We report temperature and viscosity effects on the protein docking and kinetics of 3Zncyt c6 + cyt f(III) → Zncyt c6+ + cyt f(II). At 0.5-40.0 °C, this reaction occurs within the persistent (associated) diprotein complex with the rate constant kpr and within the transient (collision) complex with the rate constant ktr. The viscosity independence of kpr, the donor-acceptor coupling Hab = (0.5 ± 0.1) cm−1, and reorganizational energy λ = (2.14 ± 0.02) eV indicate true et within the persistent complex. The viscosity dependence of ktr and a break at 30 °C in the Eyring plot for ktr reveal mechanisms within the transient complex that are reversibly switched by temperature change. Kramers protein friction parameters differ much for the reactions below (σ = 0.3 ± 0.1, δ = 0.85 ± 0.07) and above (σ = 4.0 ± 0.9, δ = 0.40 ± 0.06) 30 °C. The transient complex(es) undergo(es) coupled et below ca. 30 °C and gated et above ca. 30 °C. Brownian dynamics simulations reveal two broad, dynamic ensembles of configurations “bridged” by few intermediate configurations through which the interconversion presumably occurs.  相似文献

In order to examine the effects of coordinated hydroxide ion and free hydroxide ion in configurational conversion of a tetraamine macrocyclic ligand complex, the kinetic of the cis-to-planar interconversion of cis-[Ni(isocyclam)(H2O)2]2+ (isocyclam = 1,4,7,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) has been examined spectrophotometrically. All kinetic data have been satisfactorily fitted by the rate law, R = (k1KOH[OH]2 + k2[OH])(1 + KOH[OH])−1(cis-[Ni(isocyclam)(H2O)2]2+ + [Ni(isocyclam)(OH)]+), where k2 = (3.40 ± 0.12) × 103 dm3 mol−1 s−1 is almost equal to kOH determined in buffer solution (lowly basic media), KOH = 22.7 ± 1.4 dm3 mol−1 at I (ionic strength) = 0.10 mol dm−3 (NaClO4 + NaOH) and 25.0 °C. Rate constants, k2 and KOH, are functions of ionic strength, giving a good evidence for an intermolecular pathway. The reaction follows a free-base-catalyzed mechanism where nitrogen inversion, solvation and ring conformational changes are occurred.  相似文献

The structure and water permeability of bilayers composed of the ether-linked lipid, dihexadecylphosphatidylcholine (DHPC), were studied and compared with the ester-linked lipid, dipalmitoylphosphaditdylcholine (DPPC). Wide angle X-ray scattering on oriented bilayers in the fluid phase indicate that the area per lipid A is slightly larger for DHPC than for DPPC. Low angle X-ray scattering yields A = 65.1 Å2 for DHPC at 48 °C. LAXS data provide the bending modulus, KC = 4.2 × 10−13 erg, and the Hamaker parameter H = 7.2 × 10−14 erg for the van der Waals attractive interaction between neighboring bilayers. For the low temperature phases with ordered hydrocarbon chains, we confirm the transition from a tilted Lβ′ gel phase to an untilted, interdigitated LβI phase as the sample hydrates at 20 °C. Our measurement of water permeability, Pf = 0.022 cm/s at 48 °C for fluid phase DHPC is slightly smaller than that of DPPC (Pf = 0.027 cm/s) at 50 °C, consistent with our triple slab theory of permeability.  相似文献

The action pattern of Bacillus licheniformis thermostable α-amylase (BLA) was analyzed using a series of 14C-labeled and non-labeled maltooligosaccharides from maltose (G2) to maltododecaose (G12). Maltononaose (G9) was the preferred substrate, and yielded the smallest Km = 0.36 mM, the highest kcat = 12.86 s−1, and a kcat/Km value of 35.72 s−1 mM−1, producing maltotriose (G3) and maltohexaose (G6) as the major product pair. Maltooctaose (G8) was hydrolyzed into two pairs of products: G3 and maltopentaose (G5), and G2 and G6 with cleavage frequencies of 0.45 and 0.30, respectively. Therefore, we propose a model with nine subsites: six in the terminal non-reducing end-binding site and three at the reducing end-binding site in the binding region of BLA.  相似文献

A bioreactor cascade with a submerged biofilm is proposed to treat young landfill leachate of jbel chakir landfill site south west from capital Tunis, Tunisia. The prototype was run under different organic loading charges varying from 0.6 to 16.3 kg TOC m−3 day−1. Without initial pH adjustment total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate varied between 65% and 97%. The total reduction of COD reached 92% at a hydraulic retention time of 36 h. However, the removal of total kjeldahl nitrogen for loading charges of 0.5 kg N m−3 day−1 reached 75%. The adjustment of pH to 7.5 improved nitrogen removal to a rate of 85% for loading charge of 1 kg N m−3 day−1. The main bacterial groups responsible for a simultaneous removal of organic carbon and nitrogen belonged to Bacillus, Actinomyces, Pseudomonas and Burkholderia genera. These selected isolates showed a great capacity of degradation at different leachate concentrations of total organic carbon.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of light (visible light - 5800 lux, 24 h) or dark regime and aerobic or anaerobic condition on the decay of added oxolinic acid (OA) at 5, 10 and 20 mg L−1 in eel pond sediment. An asymptotic decaying exponential model Ct = Cmin + Co × exp (−k × t) was used to facilitate quantitative approach to OA transformation, where Ct is the concentration of OA after t days, Cmin the estimated level-off concentration of OA residue, Co the concentration of added OA and k the decaying coefficient. OA decayed faster under light (Cmin = 4.6 mg L−1) than under dark (Cmin = 7.8 mg L−1) and also decayed faster under aerobic (Cmin = 4.0 mg L−1) than under anaerobic condition (Cmin = 8.5 mg L−1). Cmin increased with Co. Sundrying and tilling eel pond bottom should be able to reduce OA residue significantly.  相似文献

The small seagrass species, Halophila stipulacea is abundant in the subtidal zone of the Bay of Eilat, Red Sea, southern Israel. Early life history characteristics of this species were investigated in summer 2002 by means of field surveys and outdoor experiments. Monospecific stands were found at depths of between 2 and 20 m. Reproduction began in late May and ripe pericarps were found for 1 month starting from the beginning of August. The ratios of female versus male plants were 0.9 at depths of between 2.5 and 10 m and 0.5 at depths of between 12.5 and 15 m. The proportion of reproductive branches was significantly larger in the shallow (2–5 m) than in the deep (7–15 m) populations, i.e., 20 ± 11% versus 6 ± 10%, respectively. Ripe seeds were predominantly produced at depths of between 2 and 5 m. Experimental studies demonstrated that full sunlight completely inhibited seedling growth at a depth of 30 cm; no macroscopic seedlings could be observed after 40-day exposure to full sunlight. If exposed to 90% photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) but protected from ultraviolet radiation (UVR), the number of macroscopic seedlings increased to 7.4 ± 2.3% of the planted seeds. If protected from both UVR and 80% of the PAR, the number of macroscopic seedlings increased to 22.5 ± 4.0% of the planted seeds. UVR exclusion and 80% PAR reduction also significantly increased the rhizome growth rates of seedlings in the first month after germination (0.14 ± 0.04 mm day−1) compared with only UVR exclusion (0.04 ± 0.02 mm day−1). The absence of H. stipulacea from the uppermost part of the subtidal zone (depths of 0–2 m) may be due to light inhibition of germling growth and uprooting by occasional storms.  相似文献
