Biology, morphology and oviposition behavior of Anagrus atomus (Linnaeus), an egg parasitoid of the grape leafhopper Arboridia kermanshah Dlabola in Isfahan, Iran, were investigated. Adults were smaller than those so far reported from other regions. Females continuously drummed on plant surfaces with their antennae to search for host eggs. Parasitoid eggs hatched 2–3 days after oviposition, and A. atomus had two larval instars. First instar larvae were sacciform and immobile. Second instar larvae appeared 4 days after oviposition and were very active, and doubled their body length. The prepupal and pupal stages lasted for 1 and 5–6 days, respectively. Adult emergence began 16 days after oviposition, and peaked on day 17.

Larvae of a gregarious endoparasitoid, Cotesia kariyai (Watanabe), grew rapidly during the second stadium in the host. The fat body of a Pseudaletia host parasitized by C. kariyai was completely consumed by 10 d, just before larval emergence. It seemed hard to explain the growth of the second instar parasitoids and the rapid consumption of the fat body only by ingestion of hemolymph converted from the fat body or other organs of the host. Paraffin sections of the parasitized host revealed that many teratocytes were attached to the surface of the fat body in many sites and destroyed the fat body tissue locally. Zymography of proteins released from the teratocytes revealed that the teratocytes 4 to 9 days after parasitization showed collagenase activity (as a gelatinase). Further, 1st instar parasitoids which were transplanted together with teratocytes into unparasitized hosts preconditioned with C. kariyai polydnavirus (CkPDV) plus venom, grew normally to the 2nd stadium. Abnormal growth of parasitoid larvae was observed when parasitoid larvae were transplanted without teratocytes. These results suggest that the teratocytes attach to the outer sheath of the fat body, secrete an enzyme that makes a hole in the matrix of the fat body, thus allowing the second instar parasitoid to ingest the content of the fat body.

The solitary endoparasitoid, Microplitis rufiventris, attacks and can develop in earlier instars of Spodoptera littoralis larvae with preference to third‐instar larvae. We used the last stadium (sixth instar), a stage which is not naturally parasitized. The newly moulted larvae (0–3 h old) of this stadium were more acceptable for parasitization by the wasp females than the older ones (24 h old). Parasitization by M. rufiventris wasp of last instar S. littoralis larvae leads to dose (no. of eggs + parasitoid factors)‐dependent effects which were more pronounced at 20°C than at 27°C. A single oviposition into a sixth instar host larva resulted in normal development of the host. However, superparasitization increased the proportions of developmentally arrested hosts and number of live wasp larvae. Development of supernumerary individuals of the parasitoid in the host larva leads to dose‐related adverse effects on host growth and development. The present study may provide interesting opportunities for studying the physiological bases of host–parasitoid interactions and parasitoid intra‐specific competition in the biological system considered.

To successfully complete its development, the gregarious ectoparasitoid Eulophus pennicornis must inhibit the moult of its host, Lacanobia oleracea. In the present study, we examined the possibility that moult- and metamorphosis-associated endocrine events may be disrupted in caterpillars parasitized as newly moulted last (sixth) instars. Juvenile hormone (JH) titres on days 2 and 5 of the final stadium were significantly higher (> 100 fold) in parasitized than in non-parasitized hosts, in which JH was essentially absent. Elevated JH levels were associated with reduced haemolymph JH esterase (JHE) activity (down by 99.8%) and enhanced in vitro JH biosynthesis by the corpora allata (CA) (up to 4.5 fold). Wasp adults and/or larvae, in which we measured high levels of JH III (up to 2.7 ng/g), but little or no JH I or JH II, were not seen as likely sources of JH in parasitized hosts, in which we found mostly JH I and JH II. In addition, removal of parasitoid eggs or larvae after oviposition did not prevent the rise in JH titres seen in parasitoid-laden hosts, suggesting that wasp venom may be responsible for the observed hormonal dysfunction. Host haemolymph 20-hydroxyecdysone (20-E) levels were largely unaffected by parasitism during the final stadium although they were observed to increase earlier and decrease more rapidly in parasitized insects. We compare these results with those reported earlier for L. oleracea larvae parasitized by E. pennicornis as penultimate (fifth) instars, which display significantly depressed 20-E titres relative to control larvae. We conclude that E. pennicornis employs host endocrine-disruption strategies that differ according to whether the host is parasitized as a penultimate or final-stadium larva.

The foraging behavior ofVenturia canescens, a solitary endoparasitoid of lepidopteran larvae, was investigated in the laboratory. FemaleVenturia canescens with a larger number of mature eggs to lay were found to have higher levels of superparasitism (measured as numbers of eggs laid per parasitized host). Increased parasitoid density was found to result in reduced levels of superparasitism by host-deprived (i.e.,undepleted) wasps. Females which had been allowed access to hosts before the experiment (depleted wasps) laid fewer eggs per parasitized host than undepleted wasps, although there was no significant difference in the levels of superparasitism among the depletion periods of 1, 2, 5, and 7 h. It was also found that an egg which was encountered less than 15 min after oviposition was much less likely to be avoided than one which was encountered after more than 15 min had elapsed.

The endoparasitic development ofG. liparidis was examined in 3 different host stages of gypsy moth larvae. Hatching ofG. liparidis-larvae occurred 3 to 5 days after oviposition in hosts parasitized during their premoulting period, and after 5 to 7 days in those parasitized in the 3rd midinstar state. The parasites generally moulted to the 2nd larval instar between the 11th and 13th day in the first group, and between the 13th and 15th day in the latter, when they had reached a volume of 0.04–0.05 mm3. The positive correlation between host ecdysis and the ecdysis of 1st stadium larvae to L2 suggested that host moulting influenced the development of the parasitoid larvae. Emergence from the host larvae occurred at 20°C after 27 days on average, and coincided with the parasites moulting to the 3rd instar. Five to 7 days after spinning their cocoons near the developmentally arrested host larva, the male, and 1 to 2 days later the female wasps eclosed. Due to the variation in the number of parasites per host, no difference was observed between the hosts parasitized at various stages; however, a tendency for later parasitized hosts to contain more parasite larvae was evident. The nutritional conditions of the moth parental generation influenced both host and parasite development. On the other hand no influence of host age was observed on emergence dates of larvae and wasps.

Solitary parasitoids are limited to laying one egg per host because larvae compete within hosts. If host encounter rate is low, females should not increase the number of eggs/host in response. The tachinid fly, Chetogena edwardsii, was used to evaluate the effect of host deprivation on egg accumulation, oviposition behavior, and egg quality in a solitary parasitoid. Females deprived of hosts for 2– 7 days accumulate about 1 day's supply of eggs. Egg output of deprived females once hosts are restored does not differ from that of control females. Deprived females retain one egg in the uterus where it undergoes embryogenesis. Maggots emerging from retained eggs are more likely to survive in hosts molting in 40 h or less after receipt of an egg than are maggots emerging from eggs fertilized shortly before oviposition. Egg retention is a consequence of host deprivation that permits females to broaden the range of hosts they can exploit to include soon-to-molt hosts and possibly multiply parasitized hosts.

To complement existing information on the mortality of larvae of the wasp Cotesia plutellae attacking moth caterpillars infected with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) we tested the direct and indirect effects of the bacterium on adult wasp longevity and oviposition behaviour. In one experiment with female parasitoids, mean longevity (SEM) was not significantly different between females exposed to Bt (1.98 +/- 0.08 days) and those not exposed (2.18 +/- 0.13 days). In a second experiment with both males and females, Bt treatment did not significantly effect either male or female parasitoids exposed to Bt. To observe the possible effects of Bt on oviposition behaviour of C. plutellae each of 10 females were given five larvae that had been treated with Bt and five untreated larvae at the same time. All parasitoids were observed to make oviposition attempts in both untreated and treated larvae. Upon dissection of the host larvae, one or more C. plutellae eggs were found in each of the larvae in which a parasitoid attempted oviposition. There was no effect of Bt treatment on parasitoid oviposition. The mean number of ovipositions in treated larvae (4.3 +/- 0.3) was not significantly different from untreated larvae (4.7 +/- 0.2).

Abstract Ovipositing Asobara japonica females inject venom (containing paralysis‐inducing factors) immediately after the insertion of their ovipositors into Drosophila larvae, and lay eggs a little later. Interruption of their oviposition behaviour before egg laying causes high larval mortality in host Drosophila species, whereas normal oviposition does not. This suggests that venom of this parasitoid is toxic to larvae of these host species but its toxicity is suppressed by factor(s) provided by parasitoid females at the time of laying egg or by parasitoid embryos developing in the hosts. On the other hand, venom does not show toxicity to larvae of nonhost Drosophia species. Possible functions of venom are discussed.

Infection of Lacanobia oleracea (Linnaeus) larvae with the microsporidium Vairimorpha necatrix (Kramer) resulted in significant effects on the survival and development of the braconid parasitoid, Meteorus gyrator (Thunberg). Female M. gyrator did not show any avoidance of V. necatrix-infected hosts when they were selecting hosts for oviposition. When parasitism occurred at the same time as infection by the pathogen, or up to four days later, no significant detrimental effects on the parasitoid were observed. However, when parasitism occurred six to eight days after infection, a greater proportion (12.5-14%) of hosts died before parasitoid larvae egressed. Successful eclosion of adult wasps was also reduced. When parasitism and infection were concurrent, parasitoid larval development was significantly faster in infected hosts, and cocoons were significantly heavier. However, as the time interval between infection and parasitism increased, parasitoid larval development was significantly extended by up to two days, and the cocoons formed were significantly (c. 20%) smaller. Vairimorpha necatrix spores were ingested by the developing parasitoid larvae, accumulated in the occluded midgut, and were excreted in the meconium upon pupation.

Interaction between an entomopoxvirus (PsEPV) and a gregarious braconid endoparasitoid,Cotesia kariyai,inPseudaletia separatalarvae showed that infection of larvae with PsEPV was deleterious to the development and survival ofC. kariyai. The survival and development ofC. kariyaiin PsEPV-infectedP. separatalarvae depended on the length of time between parasitization and viral infection. No parasitoid larvae emerged from PsEPV-infected hosts when host larvae were exposed simultaneously to parasitization and PsEPV inoculation whereas more than 80% of the hosts produced parasitoids when PsEPV was administered 5 days postparasitization.C. kariyailarvae in PsEPV-infected hosts showed a retarded development, shrank, and died about 8 days after viral exposure. Virion-free plasma from PsEPV-infectedP. separatalarvae was toxic to the parasitoid larvae even up to a dilution level of 32 when it was injected intrahemocoelically into the host larvae. Development of parasitoids in hosts that were simultaneously parasitized and injected with the virion-free plasm never progressed beyond the egg stage. The parasitizedP. separatalarvae injected with the virion-free plasma did not pupate and died within 30 days after injection.

Virus-like particles occur in the calyx fluid and cells of the braconid parasitoid, Phanerotoma flavitestacea Fischer. These particles occur in the cytoplasm, nucleus, and cytoplasmic vacuoles of the calyx wall cells as well as in the lumen of the calyx. They were subsequently transferred to the host, Paramyelois transitella (Walker), during oviposition of the parasitoid. Within 2 hours after the wasps had oviposited, similar virus-like particles were found in the host in the cytoplasm of developing muscle tissue, fat body, and nerve tissue. Such particles were absent in unparasitized hosts. The significance of these findings as related to the avoidance of a host response is discussed.

We observed the foraging behavior of Diadegma semiclausum (Hymenoptera:Ichneumonidae), a larval parasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), in a wind tunnel to determine how interpatch distance affects patch time allocation. Individual female wasps were released onto an experimental patch infested with host larvae and were allowed freely to leave for an identically extrapatch placed upwind of the experimental patch with varying interpatch distances. The effects of interpatch distance and within-patch foraging experience on the patch-leaving tendency of the parasitoid were analyzed bymeans of the proportional hazards model. Increasing interpatch distance andunsuccessful host encounter as a result of host defense decreased the patch-leaving tendency, while successful oviposition and unsuccessful search time since last oviposition increased the patch-leaving tendency. Asa result, both patch residence time and number of ovipositions by D. semiclausum increased with increasing interpatch distance, which appears to agree with the general predictions of the marginal value theorem that a parasitoid should stay longer and parasitize more hosts with increasing interpatch distance.

Larvae of the gregarious ectoparasitoid, Euplectrus separatae, a species that parasitizes Pseudaletia separata, migrate from the dorsal to the ventral side of the host larva for pupation 7 days after parasitization. The parasitized host larvae die after the migration. The body mass of the parasitoid larvae increases while that of the host larva drastically decreases. Most of the tissue in the dead host larvae completely collapses. In this study, we examined the cause of host death and how the tissues collapse. Artificial removal of all parasitoid larvae before their migration on day 7 rescued the host larvae, but removal after parasitoid migration did not rescue the hosts. Tissues of the dead host larvae were completely liquefied. Injection of saliva from day 7 parasitoid larvae into host larvae killed the host larvae. High activity of a trypsin-like enzyme was detected in the saliva of day 7 parasitoids. Though phospholipase B and hyaluronidase were also detected in the saliva, commercial phospholipase B and hyaluronidase did not kill the hosts, whereas an injection of commercial trypsin was lethal. The trypsin-injected hosts showed the same tissue collapse as noted in parasitized and saliva-injected hosts. Leupeptin, a trypsin inhibitor, reduced mortality when injected into day 7 hosts (parasitoids were removal following migration). These observations suggest that the day 7 parasitoid larvae release saliva containing a trypsin-like enzyme to digest the host tissues following migration.

Busseola fusca (Fuller) is one of the most important pest of cereals in sub-Saharan Africa. Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) is the predominant parasitoid attacking B. fusca larvae in many parts of Africa. An exotic parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron, was introduced into Kenya in 1993 for the control of Chilo partellus (Swinhoe). Laboratory studies indicated that although C. flavipes would search for, and attack B. fusca , it was not able to complete its development in this host. The aim of the present study was to investigate the outcome of multiple parasitism of B. fusca by the two Cotesia species. The study showed that when both parasitoid species stung a B. fusca larva at the same time, both parasitoids emerged from more than half of the host larvae, C. flavipes alone emerged from 17%, and C. sesamiae alone emerged from 9%. When the larvae were parasitized by C. sesamiae first, and then 2 h later by C. flavipes , and vice versa, most of the progeny were C. flavipes . However, when B. fusca larvae were stung by C. sesamiae three days before oviposition by C. flavipes , significantly more C. sesamiae emerged from the larvae. When C. flavipes oviposited first, no larvae produced C. flavipes only. The interaction of parasitoids and the host immune system, and the implications of these results for the biological control of stem borers in East Africa are discussed.

Abstract.  The age of Lacanobia oleracea (L.) in the final (sixth) larval stadium influences host choice and developmental success significantly in the gregarious ectoparasitoid Eulophus pennicornis (Nees). In choice tests, parasitoids with prior oviposition experience parasitize hosts in the second day of the sixth stadium most frequently. Parasitoid brood survival on normally-reared (i.e. fed) hosts declines monotonically with age such that mean progeny survival (egg–adult) is less than 20% for wasps developing on hosts parasitized on day 5 of the sixth stadium, as opposed to almost 50% when developing on those parasitized on day 1. Neck ligation of hosts increases the survival of wasp larvae developing on older hosts (days 4 and 5), whereas starved hosts produce progeny in similar numbers to fed hosts on most days during the final larval stadium. Hosts parasitized early in the stadium (days 1–3), although continuing to grow, do not exhibit the characteristic physical changes that non-parasitized larvae exhibit prior to pupation. However, hosts parasitized on days 4 and 5 form prepupae in appreciable numbers, particularly on day 5 where, regardless of treatment, over 80% of hosts attain this stage. Envenomated hosts behave similarly, an observation that suggests that it is the wasp's inability to arrest completely development in older hosts that is the significant factor in reducing the developmental success of the wasp. The findings are discussed in the light of the known endocrinological events in the host, and in relation to previously reported host manipulations induced by this wasp.

Insect endoparasitoids modulate the host physiology through the injection of maternal-derived substances into the host, inducing physiological and hormonal changes in the host's internal environment to benefit parasitoid development. These changes are direct to control host development and regulate nutrient availability to the developing parasitoid, and they are synchronized with parasitoid development. Eggs of some of these parasitoids have low yolk content and require nutrients from the host hemolymph to initiate and complete embryogenesis. We report changes in the amino acid composition and protein profile of the host hemolymph of the endoparasitoid Toxoneuron nigriceps, and improved the in vitro culture of pre-germ band stage eggs. The protein profile of parasitized larvae was similar to controls throughout the embryonic development, but total amino acid concentration decreased in the first 2 h after parasitization, significantly increasing in the following hours up to 8 h. Amino acid levels were higher in parasitized larvae from 16 to 28 h after parasitization. Comparison of single amino acids indicated amino acids involved in energy metabolism (Krebs cycle) followed a trend during parasitoid embryogenesis, and their changes were correlated with embryonic development. Improvement in the in vitro development of 6 h-old eggs of T. nigriceps was obtained by adding factors released by the host fat body to the artificial medium, while a cell lysate stimulated embryogenesis and allowed the full development of newly laid eggs in vitro.

The host suitability of Agrotis segetum Denis & Schiff., A. ipsilon Hufn., Spodoptera littoralis Boisd, S. exigua Hub., Mythimna loreyi Duponchel and Mamestra oleracea L. for the gregarious braconid Cotesia ( = Apanteles) telengai Tobias was determined under laboratory conditions. The parasitoid only completed its development in larvae of A. segetum. The percentage of successfully parasitized larvae and the mean duration of C. telengai egg‐larval period were inversely related to the age of the host or host instar at parasitization. The mean number of parasitoids which emerged per parasitized larva was positively correlated with the larval age. The sex ratio was consistently high (ca. eight males to one female), independent of the host instar parasitized, as compared to 1:1 as observed frequently in field populations of this wasp. The females of C. telengai were active and produced offspring at temperatures of 15, 20, 25 and 30° C. However, the mean percentage of parasitized larvae increased from 13.1 to 72% and the mean progeny per parasitoid female increased from 14.7 to 129.4 parasitoids, both significant, when the experimental temperature was raised from 15 to 30°C, while their mean development time decreased from 75.5 to 19.2 days. At 25°C, the virgin and mated females continued oviposition until days 16 and 17, with a lifetime total of progeny of 397.6 (SD ±224.7) and 611.1 (SD± 128.8) parasitoids respectively, reaching a maximum of 64.3 and 99.2 on day 2 respectively.
