Control coefficients were used to describe the degree to which ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) limits the steady-state rate of CO2 assimilation in sunflower leaves from plants grown at high (800 μmol mol−1) and low (350 μmol mol−1) CO2. The magnitude of a control coefficient is approximately the percentage change in the flux that would result from a 1% rise in enzyme active site concentration. In plants grown at low CO2, leaves of different ages varied considerably in their photosynthetic capacities. In a saturating light flux and an ambient CO2 concentration of 350 μmol mol−1, the Rubisco control coefficient was about 0.7 in all leaves, indicating that Rubisco activity largely limited the assimilation flux. The Rubisco control coefficient for leaves grown at 350 μmol mol−1 CO2 dropped to about zero when the ambient CO2 concentration was raised to 800 μmol mol−1. In relatively young, fully expanded leaves of plants grown at high CO2, the Rubisco control coefficient was also about 0.7 at a saturating light flux and at the CO2 concentration at which the plants were grown (800 μmol mol−1). This apparently resulted from a decrease in the concentration of Rubisco active sites. In older leaves, however, the control coefficient was about 0.2. Because, on the whole, Rubisco activity still largely limits the assimilation flux in plants grown at high CO2, the kinetics of this enzyme can still be used to model photosynthesis under these conditions. The relatively high Rubisco control coefficient under enhanced CO2 indicates that the young sunflower leaves have the capacity to acclimate their photosynthetic biochemistry in a way consistent with an optimal use of protein resources.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) availability is a critical factor affecting photosynthetic acclimation of C3 plants under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]e). However, current understanding of N effects on photosynthetic electron transport rate and partitioning, as well as its impact on photosynthesis under [CO2]e, is inadequate. Using controlled environment open-top chambers, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was grown at two N levels (0 and 200 mg(N) kg?1 soil) and two atmospheric CO2 concentrations of 400 ([CO2]a) and 760 μmol mol?1([CO2]e) during 2009 and 2010. Under [CO2]e high N availability increased stomatal conductance and transpiration rate, reduced limitations on the activity of triose phosphate isomerase, a Calvin cycle enzyme, and increased the rate of net photosynthesis (P N). Considering photosynthetic electron transport rate and partitioning aspects, we suggest that greater N availability increased P N under [CO2]e due to four following reasons: (1) higher N availability enhanced foliar N and chlorophyll concentrations, and the actual photochemical efficiency of photosystem (PS) II reaction centers under irradiance increased, (2) increase of total electron transport rate and proportion of open PSII reaction centers, (3) enhancement of the electron transport rate of the photochemical and carboxylation processes, and (4) reduced limitations of the Calvin cycle enzymes on the photosynthetic electron transport rate. Consequently, sufficient N improved light energy utilization in wheat flag leaves under [CO2]e, thus benefiting to photosynthetic assimilation.  相似文献

The effects on growth in super-elevated (1%) CO2 in terms of photosynthetic capability and carbohydrate production were studied in an epiphytic CAM (Crassulacean acid metabolism) orchid plantlet, Mokara Yellow (Arachnis hookeriana×Ascocenda Madame Kenny). The growth of the plantlets was greatly enhanced after growing for 3 months at 1% CO2 compared with the control plantlets (0.035% CO2). CO2 enrichment produced more than a 2-fold increase in dry matter production. The enhanced root growth at 1% CO2 led to a higher root:shoot ratio. Plantlets grown at super-elevated CO2 had higher Fv/Fm values, a higher photochemical quenching (qP) and a relatively lower non-photochemical quenching (qN). CO2 at 1% appeared to enhance the utilization of captured light energy in the orchid plantlets. CO2 enrichment also increased contents of soluble sugars (glucose and sucrose) and starch in the orchid plantlets. The extra starch formed under 1% CO2 did not cause a disruption of the chloroplasts. Chlorophyll content was higher and a clear granal stacking was evident in young leaves and roots of plantlets grown at 1% CO2. An extensive thylakoid system was observed in the young leaf chloroplasts of the CO2-enriched plantlets indicating an improved development of the photosynthetic apparatus when compared to that of the control plantlets. The increased photosynthetic capacity and enhanced growth of the epiphytic roots under CO2 enrichment would facilitate the generation of more photoassimilates and acquisition of essential resources, thereby increasing the survival rate of orchid plantlets under stressful field conditions.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphisms of dioecious plants are important in controlling and maintaining sex ratios under changing climate environments. Yet, little is known about sex-specific responses to elevated CO2 with soil nitrogen (N) deposition. To investigate sex-related physiological and biochemical responses to elevated CO2 with N deposition, Populus cathayana Rehd. was employed as a model species. The cuttings were subjected to two CO2 regimes (350 and 700???mol?mol?1) with two N levels (0 and 5?g?N?m?2?year?1). Our results showed that elevated CO2 and N deposition separately increased the total number of leaves, leaf area (LA), leaf mass, net photosynthetic rate (P n), light saturated photosynthetic rate (P max), chlorophyll a (Chl a), and chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b ratio (Chl a/b) in both males and females of P. cathayana. However, the effects on LA, leaf mass, P n, P max, Chl a and Chl a/b were weakened under the combined treatment of elevated CO2 and N deposition. Males had higher leaf mass, P n, P max, apparent quantum yield (??), carboxylation efficiency (CE), Chl a, Chl a/b, leaf N, and root carbon to N ratio (C/N) than did females under elevated CO2 with N deposition. In contrast to males, females had significantly higher levels of soluble sugars in leaves and greater starch accumulation in roots and stems under the same condition. The results of the present work imply that P. cathayana females are more responsive and suffer from greater negative effects on growth and photosynthetic capacity than do males when grown under elevated CO2 with soil N deposition.  相似文献

Characteristics of a virescent cotton mutant   总被引:5,自引:4,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
Benedict CR  Kohel RJ 《Plant physiology》1968,43(10):1611-1616
The virescent cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) mutant described here differs from normal cultivated cotton by a single mutation in the nucleus. The mutant exhibits nuclear control of chlorophyll and carotenoid development. Young leaves are distinctly yellow and become green with age. There is no unusual photometabolism of 14CO2 or 14C-acetate in this mutant. It is probable that the nuclear virescent mutation is in a locus concerned with making structural units. The yellow leaves do show a high photosynthetic capacity on a chlorophyll basis. At saturating light intensity the rate of CO2 fixation is 8 fold higher than the green control leaves. Thus, impaired pigment synthesis which could be lethal is offset by a high photosynthetic capacity in the virescent leaves.  相似文献

Effect of phosphorus deficiency on photosynthetic and respiratory CO2 exchanges were analysed in primary leaves of 2-week-old bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Golden Saxa) plants under non-photorespiratory (2 % O2) and photorespiratory (21 % O2) conditions. Low P decreased maximum net photosynthetic rate (PNmax) and increased the time necessary to reach it. In the leaves of P-deficient plants the relative decrease of PNmax at 2 % O2 was larger than at 21 % O2. The results suggested the influence of photorespiration in the cellular turnover of phosphates.  相似文献

The distribution of photosynthetic activity over the area of a leaf and its change with time was determined (at low partial pressure of O2) by recording images of chlorophyll fluorescence during saturating light flashes. Simultaneously, the gas exchange was being measured. Reductions of local fluorescence intensity quantitatively displayed the extent of nonphotochemical quenching; quench coefficients, qN, were computed pixel by pixel. Because rates of photosynthetic electron transport are positively correlated with (1 − qN), computed images of (1 − qN) represented topographies of photosynthetic activity. Following application of abscisic acid to the heterobaric leaves of Xanthium strumarium L., clearly delineated regions varying in nonphotochemical quenching appeared that coincided with areoles formed by minor veins and indicated stomatal closure in groups.

This work aimed to evaluate if gas exchange and PSII photochemical activity in maize are affected by different irradiance levels during short-term exposure to elevated CO2. For this purpose gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence were measured on maize plants grown at ambient CO2 concentration (control CO2) and exposed for 4 h to short-term treatments at 800 μmol(CO2) mol−1 (high CO2) at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of either 1,000 μmol m−2 s−1 (control light) or 1,900 μmol m−2 s−1 (high light). At control light, high-CO2 leaves showed a significant decrease of net photosynthetic rate (P N) and a rise in the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a) and water-use efficiency (WUE) compared to control CO2 leaves. No difference between CO2 concentrations for PSII effective photochemistry (ΦPSII), photochemical quenching (qp) and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was detected. Under high light, high-CO2 leaves did not differ in P N, C i/C a, ΦPSII and NPQ, but showed an increase of WUE. These results suggest that at control light photosynthetic apparatus is negatively affected by high CO2 concentration in terms of carbon gain by limitations in photosynthetic dark reaction rather than in photochemistry. At high light, the elevated CO2 concentration did not promote an increase of photosynthesis and photochemistry but only an improvement of water balance due to increased WUE.  相似文献

Controlled environment chamber and glasshouse studies were conducted on six herbaceous annual species grown at 350 (AC) and 700 (EC) mol(CO2) mol-1 to determine whether growth at EC resulted in acclimation of the apparent quantum yield of photosynthesis (QY) measured at limiting photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), or in acclimation of net photosynthetic rate (P N) measured at saturating PPFD. It was also determined whether acclimation in P N at limiting PPFD was correlated with acclimation of carboxylation efficiency or ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) regeneration rate measured at saturating PPFD. Growth at EC reduced both the QY and P N at limiting PPFD in three of the six species. The occurrence of photosynthetic acclimation measured at a rate limiting PPFD was independent of whether photosynthetic acclimation was apparent at saturating measurement PPFD. At saturating measurement PPFD, acclimation to EC in the apparent carboxylation efficiency and RuBP regeneration capacity also occurred independently. Thus at least three components of the photosynthetic system may adjust independently when leaves are grown at EC. Estimates of photosynthetic acclimation at both high and low PPFD are necessary to accurately predict photosynthesis at the whole plant or canopy level as [CO2] increases.  相似文献

The photosynthetic capabilities of the fern Pteris cretica var. ouvrardii were analysed by means of the light response curves of CO2 exchange. In control growth conditions (greenhouse, low-light: 20–32 W m?2); photosynthesis was shown to be saturated for low irradiance (20–25 W m?2); the saturating photosynthetic rate, very low as compared to higher plants, was due to an extremely high intracellular resistance. When irradiance during the photosynthesis measurement was higher than 60–80 W m?2, a constant decline of net CO2 exchange as a function of time was observed. When irradiance during growth was enhanced, whether in greenhouse (20–250 W m?2) or controlled (62 W m?2) conditions, the first fronds that had developed in the new condition from the crosier stage exhibited decreased net maximal photosynthesis and a decreased efficiency in low light, but saturating irradiance was unmodified. However, the fronds whose entire differentiation (from meristem) occurred under these moderate irradiances (plants defoliated of all fronds and crosiers at the time of transfer), possessed more efficient photosynthetic characteristics than control plants. Pteris is able to grow under extreme shade conditions (4–8 W m?2); light saturating photosynthesis and efficiency are higher under extreme shade than under control conditions. These adaptive characteristics indicate that Pteris is a well-adapted shade species.  相似文献

The effects of prolonged CO2 enrichment of tomato plants on photosynthetic performance and Calvin cycle enzymes, including the amount and activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPco), were determined. Also the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis (Pmax) of the 5th leaf throughout leaf development was predicted based on the amount and kinetics of RuBPco. With short-term CO2 enrichment, i.e. only during the photosynthesis measurements, Pmax of the young leaves did not increase while the leaves reaching full expansion more than doubled their net rate of CO2 fixation. However, with longer-term CO2 enrichment, i.e. growing the crop in high CO2, the plants did not maintain this photosynthetic gain. Compared with leaves of plants grown in normal ambient CO2 the high CO2-grown leaves, when almost fully expanded, contained only about half as much RuBPco protein and Pmax in 300 and 1000 vpm CO2 was similarly reduced. The loss of RuBPco protein may be a factor associated with the accelerated fall in Pmax since Pmax was close to that predicted from the amount and kinetics of RuBPco assuming RuBP saturation. Acclimation to high CO2 is fundamentally different from acclimation to high light. In contrast to acclimation to high light, acclimation to high CO2 does not usually involve an increase in photosynthetic machinery so the synthesis and maintenance costs (as indicated by the dark respiration rate) are generally lower.  相似文献

Characteristics of Photosynthetic Apparatus in Mn-Starved Maize Leaves   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

The effects of Mn-deficiency on CO2 assimilation and excitation energy distribution were studied using Mn-starved maize leaves. Mn-deficiency caused about 70 % loss in the photon-saturated net photosynthetic rate (P N) compared to control leaves. The loss of P N was associated with a strong decrease in the activity of oxygen evolution complex (OEC) and the linear electron transport driven by photosystem 2 (PS2) in Mn-deficienct leaves. The photochemical quenching of PS2 (qP) and the maximum efficiency of PS2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm) decreased significantly in Mn-starved leaves under high irradiance, implicating that serious photoinhibition took place. However, the high-energy fluorescence quenching (qE) decreased, which was associated with xanthophyll cycle. The results showed that the pool of de-epoxidation components of the xanthophyll cycle was lowered markedly owing to Mn deficiency. Linear electron transport driven by PS2 de-creased significantly and was approximately 70 % lower in Mn-deficient leaves than that in control, indicating less trans-thylakoid pH gradient was built in Mn deficient leaves. We suggest that the decrease of non-radiative dissipation depending on xanthophyll cycle in Mn-starved leaves is a result of the deficiency of trans-thylakoid pH gradient.  相似文献

Phosphorus deficiency was induced in sugar beet plants (Beta vulgaris L. var. F5855441), cultured hydroponically under standardized environmental conditions, by removal of phosphorus from the nutrient supply at the ten leaf stage 28 days after germination. CO2 and water vapor exchange rates of individual attached leaves were determined at intervals after P cutoff. Leaves grown with an adequate nutrient supply attained net rates of photosynthetic CO2 fixation of 125 ng CO2 cm−2 sec−1 at saturating irradiance, 25 C, and an ambient CO2 concentration of about 250 μl l−1. After P cutoff, leaf phosphorus concentrations decreased as did net rates of photosynthetic CO2 uptake, photorespiratory evolution of CO2 into CO2-free air, and dark respiration, so that 30 days after cutoff these rates were about one-third of the control rates. The decrease in photosynthetic rates during the first 15 days after cutoff was associated with increased mesophyll resistance (rm) which increased from 2.4 to 4.9 sec cm−1, while from 15 to 30 days there was an increase in leaf (mainly stomatal) diffusion resistance (rl′) from 0.3 to 0.9 sec cm−1, as well as further increases in rm to 8.5 sec cm−1. Leaf diffusion resistance (rl′) was increased greatly by low P at low but not at high irradiance, rl′ for plants at low P reaching values as high as 9 sec cm−1.  相似文献

Two-year-old young spruce (Picea koraiensis Nakai) plants were grown in a climatic chamber during three summer months at double atmospheric CO2 concentration, sufficient content of soil inorganic nitrogen, and diurnal variation of temperature and illuminance, which simulate natural growth conditions. The control plants were grown in another climatic chamber under the same conditions, but at atmospheric CO2 concentration (350 ppm). CO2 exchange was measured with a Li-Cor 6400 infra-red gas analyzer in attached leaves placed in a climatic chamber in the morning under growth conditions and saturating light 1200 μE/(m2 s) in June, July, and August. In addition, dry weights of needles, leafless shoot parts of plant, fraction of thick (more than 0.5 mm in diameter) and thin (less than 0.5 mm in diameter) roots were recorded. The data were used to plot CO2 exchange rates as a function of carbon dioxide concentration and to calculate the increment of shoot and root phytomass. The maximum gas exchange rates in the treated and control plants similarly depended on CO2 concentration. The slope of the CO2 dependence curve, which corresponded to the kinetic characteristic V m /K M of photosynthetic carboxylation, increased monotonically during the experiment. To the end of observation period, the proportion of thick roots in plant phytomass significantly increased in the plants grown at double atmospheric CO2 concentration, as compared to the control plants. Thus, the increase in the rate of photosynthetic gas exchange in plants grown for three months at double atmospheric CO2 concentration was only due to the increase in CO2, the substrate of Rubisco carboxylation activity. We found no differences in the CO2 characteristic for Rubisco between the treated and control plants. The ratio of needle to thin roots in the treated and control plants was similar and did not change during the experiment. The excess of photoassimilates in the treated, as compared to the control plants, was preferentially used for thick root growth. This result shows that photosynthesis in young spruce forests can deposit excess atmospheric CO2 in the soil horizon in the form of thick root phytomass. __________ Translated from Fiziologiya Rastenii, Vol. 52, No. 5, 2005, pp. 741–746. Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv Vedettos and Lycopersicon chmielewskii Rick, LA 1028, were exposed to two CO2 concentrations (330 or 900 microliters per liter) for 10 weeks. Tomato plants grown at 900 microliters per liter contained more starch and more sugars than the control. However, we found no significant accumulation of starch and sugars in the young leaves of L. esculentum exposed to high CO2. Carbon exchange rates were significantly higher in CO2-enriched plants for the first few weeks of treatment but thereafter decreased as tomato plants acclimated to high atmospheric CO2. This indicates that the long-term decline of photosynthetic efficiency of leaf 5 cannot be attributed to an accumulation of sugar and/or starch. The average concentration of starch in leaves 5 and 9 was always higher in L. esculentum than in L. chmielewskii (151.7% higher). A higher proportion of photosynthates was directed into starch for L. esculentum than for L. chmielewskii. However, these characteristics did not improve the long-term photosynthetic efficiency of L. chmielewskii grown at high CO2 when compared with L. esculentum. The chloroplasts of tomato plants exposed to the higher CO2 concentration exhibited a marked accumulation of starch. The results reported here suggest that starch and/or sugar accumulation under high CO2 cannot entirely explain the loss of photosynthetic efficiency of high CO2-grown plants.  相似文献

Regenerants from tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. White Burley) leaf segments cultivatedin vitro in vessels with solid agar medium under usual conditions (plantlets) grew under very low irradiance (I = 40 μxmol m?2 s?1), very high relative humidity (more than 90%) and decreased CO2 concentration (ca) during light period. In comparison with seedlings of a similar number of leaves and similar total leaf area grown in sand and nutrient solution, the plantlets had lower dry mass of shoots and roots per plant and thinner leaves almost without trichomes and epicuticular waxes. Due to a low transpiration rate under high relative humidity the water potential of plantlet leaves was higher than that of seedling leaves and the difference in water potential between leaves and medium was lowei. The rate of water loss from leaves detached from plantlets was considerably faster than that from seedlings under the same conditions (I = 110 μrnol m?2; s?1, temperature 30 °C, relative humidity 50 %). Net photosynthetie rates (Pn) of leaves of plantlets and seedlings measured under saturating I, natural ca and the leaf temperature 20 °C were similar, nevertheless the shape of curves relating Pn to c» indicated some differences in photosynthetie parameters(e.g. saturation of Pn under lower ca> higher CO2 compensation concentration in plantlets than in seedlings). Similarly compensation and saturating I were lower in plantlets than in seedlings. The shape of transpiration curves as well as the expressive linear phases of PN(ca) and PN(I) curves of plantlet leaves indicated ineffective stomatal control of gas exchance. These results were confirmed by microscopic observations of stomatal movementsin situ  相似文献

The influence of mycorrhizal symbiosis, atmospheric CO2 concentration and the interaction between both factors on biomass production and partitioning were assessed in nodulated alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) associated or not with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and grown in greenhouse at either ambient (392 μmol?mol?1) or elevated (700 μmol?mol?1) CO2 air concentrations. Measurements were performed at three stages of the vegetative period of plants. Shoot and root biomass achieved by plants at the end of their vegetative period were highly correlated to the photosynthetic rates reached at earlier stages, and there was a significant relationship between CO2 exchange rates and total nodule biomass per plant. In non-mycorrhizal alfalfa, the production of leaves, stems and nodules biomass significantly increased when plants had been exposed to elevated CO2 concentration in the atmosphere for 4 weeks. Regardless CO2 concentration at which alfalfa were cultivated, mycorrhizal symbiosis improved photosynthetic rates and growth of alfalfa at early stages of the vegetative period and then photosynthesis decreased, which suggests that AMF shortened the vegetative period of the host plants. At final stages of the vegetative period, AMF enhanced both area and biomass of leaves as well as the leaves to stems ratio when alfalfa plants were cultivated at ambient CO2. The interaction of AMF with elevated CO2 improved root biomass and slightly increased the leaves to stems ratio at the end of the vegetative growth. Therefore, AMF may favor both the forage quality of alfalfa when grown at ambient CO2 and its perennity for next cutting regrowth cycle when grown under elevated CO2. Nevertheless, this hypothesis needs to be checked under natural conditions in field.  相似文献

Effects of exogenous glycinebetaine (GB, 2–50 mM) on growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, PSII photochemistry, and the activities of key enzymes involved in CO2 fixation in maize plants were investigated. Growth, CO2 assimilation rate, and stomatal conductance increased at low GB concentrations (2–20 mM) but decreased significantly at high GB concentrations (30–50 mM). Leaf relative water content and water potential remained unchanged at low GB concentrations but decreased at high GB concentrations. The maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry was unchanged either at low or high GB concentrations. The actual PSII efficiency ( Φ PSII) and photochemical quenching (qP) increased at low GB concentrations but decreased at high GB concentrations. At low GB concentrations, there were no significant changes in the efficiency of excitation energy capture by open PSII reaction centres (Fv′/Fm′) and non‐photochemical quenching (qN). At high GB concentrations, Fv′/Fm′ decreased while qN increased significantly. There were no changes in the activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, pyruvate phosphate dikinase, and ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase in control and GB‐fed plants. However, there was a linear correlation between CO2 assimilation rate and stomatal conductance in control and GB‐fed plants. Moreover, there were no significant differences in O2 evolution rate between control and GB fed‐plants under saturated CO2 conditions. The results suggest that exogenous GB application at certain concentrations can enhance CO2 assimilation rate, which can be explained by an increased stomatal conductance.  相似文献

The photosynthetic behavior of leaves and twigs was compared in Hymenoclea salsola T. and G., a subshrub of the Mohave and Sonoran deserts, in which both leaves and green twigs make substantial contributions to whole-plant carbon gain. Light saturated photosynthesis in twigs was 0.62 times that of leaves (36.9 μmol m-2 s-1) when plants were well watered. Similar ratios were consistently observed in contrasting the photosynthetic responses of the two organ types to light, temperature, and intercellular CO2, regardless of whether rates were compared under saturating or highly limiting conditions of light or intercellular CO2. These scalar differences in photosynthetic rate between leaves and green twigs under a wide range of conditions were correlated with contrasting anatomical features such as chlorenchyma volume per projected area. Under normal ambient CO2 concentrations (350 μl 1-1), twigs on well watered plants operated at lower intercellular CO2 concentrations than the leaves. Possible causes of this difference are discussed with respect to performance under well-watered conditions, organ lifespans, and contrasting anatomical constraints. Twigs require larger investments than do leaves of both carbon and nitrogen per projected area of the respective organs, yet they realize lower photosynthetic rates per intercepted light. Twigs, however, fulfill additional roles besides photosynthesis such as structural support and vascular transport which does not allow them to be as anatomically specialized as leaves for photosynthesis. Twigs also have a longer expected lifespan than leaves with a larger fraction of them surviving the summer drought period. This was correlated with a greater tolerance of twig than leaf photosynthesis to low plant water potentials.  相似文献
