Early nutrition shapes life history. Parents should, therefore, provide a diet that will optimize the nutrient intake of their offspring. In a number of passerines, there is an often observed, but unexplained, peak in spider provisioning during chick development. We show that the proportion of spiders in the diet of nestling blue tits, Cyanistes caeruleus, varies significantly with the age of chicks but is unrelated to the timing of breeding or spider availability. Moreover, this parental prey selection supplies nestlings with high levels of taurine particularly at younger ages. This amino acid is known to be both vital and limiting for mammalian development and consequently found in high concentrations in placenta and milk. Based on the known roles of taurine in mammalian brain development and function, we then asked whether by supplying taurine-rich spiders, avian parents influence the stress responsiveness and cognitive function of their offspring. To test this, we provided wild blue tit nestlings with either a taurine supplement or control treatment once daily from the ages of 2-14 days. Then pairs of size- and sex-matched siblings were brought into captivity for behavioural testing. We found that juveniles that had received additional taurine as neonates took significantly greater risks when investigating novel objects than controls. Taurine birds were also more successful at a spatial learning task than controls. Additionally, those individuals that succeeded at a spatial learning task had shown intermediate levels of risk taking. Non-learners were generally very risk-averse controls. Early diet therefore has downstream impacts on behavioural characteristics that could affect fitness via foraging and competitive performance. Fine-scale prey selection is a mechanism by which parents can manipulate the behavioural phenotype of offspring.  相似文献

Developmental patterns and pharmacological and biochemical properties of taurine transport system were investigated using developing primary cultured neurons prepared from mouse cerebral cortex by trypsin treatment. [3H]Taurine was incorporated into neurons via a high-affinity transport system of which the Km value as well as the Vmax value increased during neuronal development in vitro. This transport system was also inhibited by sodium withdrawal from incubation medium and exposures for 15 h to several metabolic inhibitors such as 2,4-dinitrophenol and monoiodoacetate. In addition, [3H]taurine uptake in both neurons cultured for 3 and 14 days was competitively inhibited by beta-alanine, guanidinoethanesulfonate and hypotaurine. Cysteic acid and cysteine sulfinic acid, metabolic intermediates produced in the process of taurine biosynthesis in the brain from cysteine, induced significant reductions in [3H]taurine uptake in both types of cultured neurons, while cysteine, isethionic acid, cysteamine and cystamine exhibited no alterations in [3H]taurine transport. Moreover, non-competitive inhibition of [3H]taurine uptake by cysteic acid was observed in both neurons. These results clearly indicate that taurine uptake was mediated by the sodium- and energy-dependent transport system with high affinity in 14-day-old neurons as well as neurons cultured for 3 days and that both the Km and Vmax values of this transport system increase during neuronal development in vitro. The results described above suggest that the decrease in taurine content observed in developing brain is unlikely to be due to alteration in the capacity of the taurine transport system during neuronal development.  相似文献

Kittens were adapted to a semipurified diet and then fed either a control diet that contained 0.1% taurine or a taurine-free diet for 6 weeks; at the end of the feeding period, kittens fed the taurine-free diet had plasma and liver taurine concentrations that were 0.38 and 0.15%, respectively, of those for control kittens. Hepatic cysteinesulfinate decarboxylase activity in taurine-deficient kittens was five-times the level in control kittens, but hepatic cysteine dioxygenase activity was not affected by the dietary treatment. Taurine-conjugated bile acids made up 98% of the total bile acids in the gall bladder of control kittens, but they accounted for only 44% of the total bile acids in the bile of taurine-depleted kittens; both the concentrations of taurine-conjugated bile acids and total bile acids were markedly decreased in taurine-deficient kittens. No effect of taurine depletion on the fractional excretion of taurine in the urine was observed. The kitten may have some mechanisms for adapting to a low-taurine diet, but these are clearly not sufficient to maintain tissue taurine levels in the absence of dietary taurine.  相似文献

Cysteine is a nonessential amino acid in poultry nutrition. Poultry diets are deficient in cysteine, but the bird’s cysteine need is met through the transsulfuration pathway (TSP) where homocysteine is converted to cysteine: a process catalyzed by cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) and cystathionine γ-lyase (CTH). Cysteine is also a major component of keratinized protein found in feathers, but the extent to which cysteine is involved in feather and skin development in poultry is unknown. We randomly assigned chicks to control and treatment (control diet plus 100?mg/kg body weight of propargylglycine which is an inhibitor of CTH) diets. The thickness of skin layers, primary feather follicle parameters, growth, and mRNA expression of CBS and CTH were measured. Inhibition of TSP corresponded with the upregulation of liver mRNA of both CBS and CTH and reduction in growth from 35 to 40 days of age. The epidermis thickness, feather follicle length, and diameter were reduced from 10 to 40 days of age. Incorporation of cysteine into keratinized protein may be more sensitive to the level of available cysteine than into nonkeratinized proteins. Thus, disruption of the TSP could affect the thermoregulatory ability of the bird.  相似文献

ABSTRACT For seabirds raising young under conditions of limited food availability, reducing chick provisioning and chick growth rates are the primary means available to avoid abandonment of a breeding effort. For most seabirds, however, baseline data characterizing chick growth and development under known feeding conditions are unavailable, so it is difficult to evaluate chick nutritional status as it relates to foraging conditions near breeding colonies. To address this need, we examined the growth and development of young Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia), a cosmopolitan, generalist piscivore, reared in captivity and fed ad libitum and restricted (ca. one‐third lower caloric intake) diets. Ad libitum‐fed chicks grew at similar rates and achieved a similar size at fledging as previously documented for chicks in the wild and had energetic demands that closely matched allometric predictions. We identified three general characteristics of food‐restricted Caspian Tern chicks compared to ad libitum chicks: (1) lower age‐specific body mass, (2) lower age‐specific skeletal and feather size, such as wing chord length, and (3) heightened levels of corticosterone in blood, both for baseline levels and in response to acute stress. Effects of diet restriction on feather growth (10–11% slower growth in diet‐restricted chicks) were less pronounced than effects on structural growth (37–52% slower growth) and body mass (24% lower at fledging age), apparently due to preferential allocation of food resources to maintain plumage growth. Our results suggest that measurements of chick body mass and feather development (e.g., wing chord or primary length) or measurement of corticosterone levels in the blood would allow useful evaluation of the nutritional status of chicks reared in the wild and of food availability in the foraging range of adults. Such evaluations could also inform demography studies (e.g., predict future recruitment) and assist in evaluating designated piscivorous waterbird conservation (colony) sites.  相似文献

Because hepatic cysteine dioxygenase (CDO) appears to play the major role in controlling cysteine catabolism in the intact rat, we characterized the effect of a lack of hepatic CDO on the regulation of cysteine and its metabolites at the whole body level. In mice with liver-specific deletion of CDO expression, hepatic and plasma cysteine levels increased. In addition, in mice with liver-specific deletion of CDO expression, the abundance of CDO and the proportion of CDO existing as the mature, more active isoform increased in extrahepatic tissues that express CDO (kidney, brown fat, and gonadal fat). CDO abundance was also increased in the pancreas, where most of the enzyme in both control and liver CDO-knockout mice was in the more active isoform. This upregulation of CDO concentration and active-site cofactor formation were not associated with an increase in CDO mRNA and thus presumably were due to a decrease in CDO degradation and an increase in CDO cofactor formation in association with increased exposure of extrahepatic tissues to cysteine in mice lacking hepatic CDO. Extrahepatic tissues of liver CDO-knockout mice also had higher levels of hypotaurine, consistent with increased metabolism of cysteine by the CDO/cysteinesulfinate decarboxylase pathway. The hepatic CDO-knockout mice were able to maintain normal levels of glutathione, taurine, and sulfate. The maintenance of taurine concentrations in liver as well as in extrahepatic tissues is particularly notable, since mice were fed a taurine-free diet and liver is normally considered the major site of taurine biosynthesis. This redundant capacity for regulation of cysteine concentrations and production of hypotaurine/taurine is additional support for the body's robust mechanisms for control of body cysteine levels and indicates that extrahepatic tissues are able to compensate for a lack of hepatic capacity for cysteine catabolism.  相似文献

Life history theory emphasizes the importance of trade‐offs in how time and energy are allocated to the competing demands of growth, fecundity, and survival. However, avian studies have historically emphasized the importance of resource acquisition over resource allocation to explain geographic variation in fecundity, parental care, and offspring development. We compared the brood sizes and nestling mass and feather growth trajectories between orange‐crowned warblers Oreothlypis celata breeding in Alaska versus California, and used 24‐h video recordings to study the relationship between parental care and growth rates. Per‐offspring provisioning rates were highest in the smallest broods, and food delivery was positively correlated with nestling growth over the 24‐h period only in Alaska. Females in Alaska spent more time brooding, and juveniles there showed faster feather growth and earlier mobility compared with those in California. We also found differences in the energetic and nutritional content of insect larvae that could facilitate the observed differences in nestling growth relative to food provisioning. Our results point to the potential importance of food quality and parental provisioning of warmth, in addition to food, for explaining avian growth patterns. We highlight the need to quantify multiple dimensions of parental care and of offspring growth and development, and to better understand the relationships between feather growth, nestling period length, and fledgling mobility.  相似文献

The amino acid taurine is essential for the function of skeletal muscle and administration is proposed as a treatment for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Taurine homeostasis is dependent on multiple processes including absorption of taurine from food, endogenous synthesis from cysteine and reabsorption in the kidney. This study investigates the cause of reported taurine deficiency in the dystrophic mdx mouse model of DMD. Levels of metabolites (taurine, cysteine, cysteine sulfinate and hypotaurine) and proteins (taurine transporter [TauT], cysteine deoxygenase and cysteine sulfinate dehydrogenase) were quantified in juvenile control C57 and dystrophic mdx mice aged 18 days, 4 and 6 weeks. In C57 mice, taurine content was much higher in both liver and plasma at 18 days, and both cysteine and cysteine deoxygenase were increased. As taurine levels decreased in maturing C57 mice, there was increased transport (reabsorption) of taurine in the kidney and muscle. In mdx mice, taurine and cysteine levels were much lower in liver and plasma at 18 days, and in muscle cysteine was low at 18 days, whereas taurine was lower at 4: these changes were associated with perturbations in taurine transport in liver, kidney and muscle and altered metabolism in liver and kidney. These data suggest that the maintenance of adequate body taurine relies on sufficient dietary intake of taurine and cysteine availability and metabolism, as well as retention of taurine by the kidney. This research indicates dystrophin deficiency not only perturbs taurine metabolism in the muscle but also affects taurine metabolism in the liver and kidney, and supports targeting cysteine and taurine deficiency as a potential therapy for DMD.  相似文献

Taurine is only a minor constituent of growing larvae and prepupae of Mamestra configurata. Following pupation there is a massive synthesis and accumulation of taurine in the pupa. Radioisotope experiments with [35S]-cysteine demonstrated that labelled cysteamine, hypotaurine and taurine were formed rapidly following the injection of labelled cysteine into two-day-old pupae. No radioactivity was found in either cysteine sulphinic acid or cysteic acid. The biosynthesis of taurine from cysteine in the pupa appears to be via: cysteine → cysteamine → hypotaurine → taurine.Newly-synthesized taurine was liberated into pupal blood and initially accumulated there. Most of the taurine in the blood of the non-diapausing pupae was taken up by developing adult structures, and especially by the flight muscles. More than 90% of the taurine synthesized during metamorphosis was found in the thorax of the adult moth, indicating an important role for taurine in the flight muscles.Diapause-programmed individuals also synthesized and accumulated large amounts of taurine following pupation. Taurine was stored in the blood of the diapausing pupa for later use when development resumed. Diapause-related functions for taurine may include membrane stabilization and diapause maintenance.  相似文献

The effects of dietary glutathione (GSH) on plasma and liver lipid concentrations were investigated with rats fed on a high cholesterol diet. When graded levels of GSH, 0.75 to 5.0%, were added to the 25% casein basal diet, the plasma total cholesterol level was significantly decreased and the HDL-cholesterol level was inversely increased in all addition levels without influence on the growth of animals except for the 5% addition level; the dietary addition of 5% GSH markedly depressed the growth and food consumption of rats and caused a slight diarrhea. Plasma triglyceride and phospholipid levels were decreased by the dietary addition of GSH. The contents of cholesterol and triglyceride in the liver were decreased as the dietary addition level of GSH was increased. The dietary addition of a mixture of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine, or cysteine alone corresponding to 2.5% GSH resulted in a cholesterol-lowering effect which could not be distinguished from the effect of GSH in rats fed on the 25% casein diet. When 1.5% GSH was added to a low (10%) casein diet, the plasma cholesterol-lowering effect of GSH was also observed and the effect was comparable to that of cysteine. These results indicate that dietary-added GSH has a plasma and liver cholesterol-lowering efficacy and that this effect is largely attributable to the cysteine residue of GSH rather than to the tripeptide itself or the other amino acid residues.  相似文献

The effects of taurine on hepatic cholesterol metabolism were investigated in hamsters fed a high-fat diet or normal chow. Two weeks-treatment of taurine at 1% in drinking water prevented high-fat diet-induced increase in cholesterol levels of serum and liver. The decrease in serum cholesterol by taurine was due to decrease in non-HDL cholesterols. A similar tendency was noted in serum and liver cholesterol levels of hamsters fed a normal diet. In hamsters fed a high-fat diet, taurine prevented elevation in hepatic activity of acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) and increased the activity of cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase. Taurine also increased cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase activity in hamsters fed normal chow. Studies on liver membranes revealed that taurine increased 125I-labeled LDL binding by 52% and 58% in hamsters fed either a normal chow or high-fat diet, respectively. Furthermore, LDL kinetic analysis showed that taurine intake resulted in significant faster plasma LDL fractional catabolic rates (FCR). These results suggest that taurine elevates hepatic LDL receptor and thereby decreases serum cholesterol levels, an event which may be the result of hepatic cholesterol depletion as a consequence of increased bile acid synthesis via enhancement of cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase activity. Thus, up-regulation of the LDL receptor and subsequent increase in receptor- mediated LDL turnover may be a key event in the cholesterol-lowering effects of taurine in hamsters.  相似文献

This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that different dietary Met levels affect small-intestinal mucosal integrity in post-weaning piglets. Two groups of piglets (n = 6/group) were weaned at 28 days of age and randomly allotted to a basal diet (without extra Met supplementation) or a Met-supplemented diet (with 0.12 % l-Met) for 14 days. The standardized ileal digestible (SID) Met levels were 0.24 and 0.35 %, respectively. At days 7 and 14 of the trial, venous blood samples were obtained from piglets, followed by their euthanasia for tissue collection. Piglets fed the diet supplemented with l-Met had a higher average daily gain during days 7–14 and improved feed efficiency during the entire period. Concentrations of sulfur amino acids (SAA), glutamate acid (Glu), glutamine (Gln), and taurine in the plasma and tissues were higher for the piglets in the Met-supplemented group. Met supplementation increased cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH) concentrations in the plasma and tissues, leading to reductions in plasma Cys/CySS redox potential and tissue GSH/GSSH redox potential. The small-intestinal mucosa of Met-supplemented piglets exhibited improved villus architecture, compared with control piglets. Met supplementation increased transepithelial electrical resistance of the jejunal mucosa. Transport of Met, Gln and Cys across the jejunal mucosa did not differ between control and Met-supplemented piglets. The abundance occludin was higher, whereas the abundance of active caspase-3 was lower, in the jejunum of the Met-supplemented piglets. Collectively, adequate dietary Met is required for optimal protein synthesis and mucosal integrity in the small intestine of post-weaning piglets.  相似文献

Amino acid changes in the retina, vitreous, lens, iris-ciliary body and cornea of the rat eye were determined during postnatal growth. The amino acid concentrations of the ocular tissues showed varying profiles at various developmental stages. These results suggest a different timetable for development of each ocular tissue or indicate a synthesis of specific proteins in the postnatal period. Adult amino acid levels appeared to be fully reached on the 30th day after birth at the latest. Quantitatively the greatest changes were observed in taurine concentrations, which increased in all five ocular tissues during maturation. GABA changes paralleled those of taurine in the retina, whereas in the other ocular tissues GABA changes were very low. The greatest decrease in glutamic acid and aspartic acid concentration during postnatal development was in the lens, where these amino acids probably are needed for the synthesis of the lenticular proteins, the alpha-, beta-, and gamma-crystallines.  相似文献

Obesity is associated with a low-grade inflammation including moderately increased serum levels of the acute phase protein serum amyloid A (SAA). In obesity, SAA is mainly produced from adipose tissue and serum levels of SAA are associated with insulin resistance. SAA has been described as a chemoattractant for inflammatory cells and adipose tissue from obese individuals contains increased numbers of macrophages. However, whether adipose tissue-derived SAA can have a direct impact on macrophage infiltration in adipose tissue or the development of insulin resistance is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of adipose tissue-derived SAA1 on the development of insulin resistance and obesity-related inflammation. We have previously established a transgenic mouse model expressing human SAA1 in the adipose tissue. For this report, hSAA1+/− transgenic mice and wild type mice were fed with a high fat diet or normal chow. Effects of hSAA1 on glucose metabolism were assessed using an oral glucose tolerance test. Real-time PCR was used to measure the mRNA levels of macrophage markers and genes related to insulin sensitivity in adipose tissue. Cytokines during inflammation were analyzed using a Proinflammatory 7-plex Assay. We found similar insulin and glucose levels in hSAA1 mice and wt controls during an oral glucose tolerance test and no decrease in mRNA levels of genes related to insulin sensitivity in adipose tissue in neither male nor female hSAA1 animals. Furthermore, serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines and mRNA levels of macrophage markers in adipose tissue were not increased in hSAA1 mice. Hence, in this model we find no evidence that adipose tissue-derived hSAA1 influences the development of insulin resistance or obesity-related inflammation.  相似文献

Cysteine homeostasis is dependent on the regulation of cysteine dioxygenase (CDO) in response to changes in sulfur amino acid intake. CDO oxidizes cysteine to cysteinesulfinate, which is further metabolized to either taurine or to pyruvate plus sulfate. To gain insight into the physiological function of CDO and the consequence of a loss of CDO activity, mice carrying a null CDO allele (CDO(+/-) mice) were crossed to generate CDO(-/-), CDO(+/-), and CDO(+/+) mice. CDO(-/-) mice exhibited postnatal mortality, growth deficit, and connective tissue pathology. CDO(-/-) mice had extremely low taurine levels and somewhat elevated cysteine levels, consistent with the lack of flux through CDO-dependent catabolic pathways. However, plasma sulfate levels were slightly higher in CDO(-/-) mice than in CDO(+/-) or CDO(+/+) mice, and tissue levels of acid-labile sulfide were elevated, indicating an increase in cysteine catabolism by cysteine desulfhydration pathways. Null mice had lower hepatic cytochrome c oxidase levels, suggesting impaired electron transport capacity. Supplementation of mice with taurine improved survival of male pups but otherwise had little effect on the phenotype of the CDO(-/-) mice. H(2)S has been identified as an important gaseous signaling molecule as well as a toxicant, and pathology may be due to dysregulation of H(2)S production. Control of cysteine levels by regulation of CDO may be necessary to maintain low H(2)S/sulfane sulfur levels and facilitate the use of H(2)S as a signaling molecule.  相似文献

Maternal obesity is associated with obesity and metabolic disorders in offspring. However, intervention strategies to reverse or ameliorate the effects of maternal obesity on offspring health are limited. Following maternal undernutrition, taurine supplementation can improve outcomes in offspring, possibly via effects on glucose homeostasis and insulin secretion. The effects of taurine in mediating inflammatory processes as a protective mechanism has not been investigated. Further, the efficacy of taurine supplementation in the setting of maternal obesity is not known. Using a model of maternal obesity, we examined the effects of maternal taurine supplementation on outcomes related to inflammation and lipid metabolism in mothers and neonates. Time-mated Wistar rats were randomised to either: 1) control : control diet during pregnancy and lactation (CON); 2) CON supplemented with 1.5% taurine in drinking water (CT); 3) maternal obesogenic diet (high fat, high fructose) during pregnancy and lactation (MO); or 4) MO supplemented with taurine (MOT). Maternal and neonatal weights, plasma cytokines and hepatic gene expression were analysed. A MO diet resulted in maternal hyperinsulinemia and hyperleptinemia and increased plasma glucose, glutamate and TNF-α concentrations. Taurine normalised maternal plasma TNF-α and glutamate concentrations in MOT animals. Both MO and MOT mothers displayed evidence of fatty liver accompanied by alterations in key markers of hepatic lipid metabolism. MO neonates displayed a pro-inflammatory hepatic profile which was partially rescued in MOT offspring. Conversely, a pro-inflammatory phenotype was observed in MOT mothers suggesting a possible maternal trade-off to protect the neonate. Despite protective effects of taurine in MOT offspring, neonatal mortality was increased in CT neonates, indicating possible adverse effects of taurine in the setting of normal pregnancy. These data suggest that maternal taurine supplementation may ameliorate the adverse effects observed in offspring following a maternal obesogenic diet but these effects are dependent upon prior maternal nutritional background.  相似文献

The physiological roles of taurine, a product of cysteine degradation and one of the most abundant amino acids in the body, remain elusive. Taurine deficiency leads to heart dysfunction, brain development abnormalities, retinal degradation, and other pathologies. The taurine synthetic pathway is proposed to be incomplete in astrocytes and neurons, and metabolic cooperation between these cell types is reportedly needed to complete the pathway. In this study, we analyzed taurine synthesis capability as reported by incorporation of radioactivity from [(35)S]cysteine into taurine, in primary murine astrocytes and neurons, and in several transformed cell lines (human (SH-SY5Y) and murine (N1E-115) neuroblastoma, human astrocytoma (U-87 MG and 1321 N1), and rat glioma (C6)). Extensive incorporation of radioactivity from [(35)S]cysteine into taurine was observed in rat glioma cells as well as in primary mouse astrocytes and neurons, establishing the presence of an intact taurine synthesis pathway in these cells. Interestingly, exposure of cells to cysteine or cysteamine resulted in elevated intracellular hypotaurine without a corresponding increase in taurine levels, suggesting that oxidation of hypotaurine limits taurine synthesis in cells. Consistent with its role as an organic osmolyte, taurine synthesis was stimulated under hypertonic conditions in neurons.  相似文献

Cysteine plays essential biological roles, but excessive amounts produce cellular oxidative stress. Cysteine metabolism is mainly mediated by the enzymes cysteine dioxygenase and γ‐glutamylcysteine synthetase, respectively coded by the genes CDO1 and GCLC. Here we test a new hypothesis posing that the synthesis of the pigment pheomelanin also contributes to cysteine homeostasis in melanocytes, where cysteine can enter the pheomelanogenesis pathway. We conducted an experiment with the Eurasian nuthatch Sitta europaea, a bird producing large amounts of pheomelanin for feather pigmentation, to investigate if melanocytes show epigenetic lability under exposure to excess cysteine. We increased systemic cysteine levels in nuthatches by supplementing them with dietary cysteine during growth. In feather melanocytes this led to the downregulation of genes involved in intracellular cysteine metabolism (GCLC), cysteine transport to the cytosol from the extracellular medium (Slc7a11) and from melanosomes (CTNS), and regulation of tyrosinase activity (MC1R and ASIP). These changes were mediated by increases in DNA m5C in all genes except Slc7a11, which experienced RNA m6A depletion. Birds supplemented with cysteine synthesized more pheomelanin than controls, but did not suffer higher systemic oxidative stress. These results suggest that excess cysteine activates an epigenetic mechanism that favours pheomelanin synthesis and may protect against oxidative stress.  相似文献

The amount of food resources available to upper‐level consumers can show marked variations in time and space, potentially resulting in food limitation. The availability of food resources during reproduction is a key factor modulating variation in reproductive success and life‐history tradeoffs, including patterns of resource allocation to reproduction versus self‐maintenance, ultimately impacting on population dynamics. Food provisioning experiments constitute a popular approach to assess the importance of food limitation for vertebrate reproduction. In this study of a mesopredatory avian species, the lesser kestrel Falco naumanni, we provided extra food to breeding individuals from egg laying to early nestling rearing. Extra food did not significantly affect adult body condition or oxidative status. However, it increased the allocation of resources to flight feathers moult and induced females to lay heavier eggs. Concomitantly, it alleviated the costs of laying heavier eggs for females in poor body condition, and reduced their chances of nest desertion (implying complete reproductive failure). Extra food provisioning improved early nestling growth (body mass and feather development). Moreover, extra food significantly reduced the negative effects of ectoparasites on nestling body mass, while fostering forearm (a flight apparatus trait) growth among highly parasitized nestlings. Our results indicate that lesser kestrels invested the extra food mainly to improve current reproduction, suggesting that population growth in this species can be limited by food availability during the breeding season. In addition, extra food provisioning reduced the costs of the moult–breeding overlap and affected early growth tradeoffs by mitigating detrimental ectoparasite effects on growth and enhancing development of the flight apparatus with high levels of parasitism. Importantly, our findings suggest that maternal condition is a major trait modulating the benefits of extra food to reproduction, whereby such benefits mostly accrue to low‐quality females with poor body condition.  相似文献
