It is shown in a mathematical model of a myelinated nerve fiber that the development of a local response in an inexcitable node plays an important role in the mechanism of the "jumping" of an action potential (AP) across the inexcitable node. In the absence of such a response (for example, in the case of a 1000-fold decrease in the maximum sodium permeability, Na) in fibers with normal relations between the length of the internodal segment (L) and its diameter (D) (L/D>100), the conduction is blocked. It is possible only in fibers with relatively short internodal segments (L/D<90). With a decrease in the Na in several nodes, the transmission of excitation from the first to the second altered node is of critical importance for propagation of the impulse. The conduction of an AP becomes decremental if in each of the altered nodes the AP acquires a gradual character, for example, in the case of acceleration of sodium inactivation through the rate constant h.A. A study was made of the effect of reciprocal inhibition on individual firing motoneurons in the extensor carpi ulnaris and soleus muscle in human subjects. Peristimulus histograms (PSH) were plotted at different average frequency of motoneuron firing ( ) and the change in duration of interspike intervals (ISI) was analyzed. For reciprocal inhibition, as for other types of inhibition, is a factor in the effectiveness of motoneuron inhibition. The duration of inhibition apparent in the PSH, the sizes of zones of inhibition effectiveness in the ISIs and lengthening of the intervals are dependent on . For all motoneurons, the low range is most favorable for effective inhibition. This study investigated cardiovascular responses to 2 min sustained submaximal (20% MVC) and maximal (100% MVC) voluntary isometric contractions of the finger flexors in healthy young women. Cardiovascular variables investigated were: heart rate (f c), mean arterial pressure ( a), and stroke volume (SV). Doppler echocardiography was used to estimate SV from measures of aortic diameter (AD) and time-velocity integrals. Preliminary studies indicated that AD did not change significantly after 2 min sustained 100% MVC. Therefore, pre-exercise AD values were used to calculate SV before, during and after exercise. During the 2-min 100% MVC period, f c and aincreased significantly during the first 30 s of contraction. f c then remained constant during the remainder of the 2-min contraction period, while acontinued to rise. SV did not change significantly during the 100% MVC task but increased significantly during recovery from sustained 100% MVC. The data suggest that the magnitude of cardiovascular responses to isometric exercise is dependent on the specific task performed, and that there is a different pattern of response for f c, a, and SV during 20% and 100% MVC tasks. Unlike f c and a, SV did not change significantly during isometric exercise, but increased significantly after sustained 100% MVC.  相似文献

Characteristics of delayed potassium outward current were investigated during voltage clamp experiments on nonidentified intracellularly perfused neurons isolated from the snailHelix pomatia. A calcium-dependent potassium curent displaying special properties was shown to exist, apart from the voltage-operated potassium currents dependent on intracellular calcium ions . This type of current increases with a rise in the extracellular concentration of calcium ions , is not blocked by intracellular application of 10 mM EGTA and 77 mM fluoride, and may be suppressed by adding 1.5 mM cobalt ions to the extracellular fluid. This current, unlike , only takes a few milliseconds to peak, after which it fades to a steady level, comparable with that of .A. A. To investigate the hypothesis that facial cooling (FC) exerts a greater influence on the cardiovascular system at lower versus higher levels of exercise, this study examined the effect of facial cooling [mean (SE): 0 (2)°C at 0.8 m·s–1 wind velocity] during 30 min low [35% maximum oxygen consumption ( O2max)] and moderate (70% O2max) levels of cycle ergometry in the supine position. Five male subjects were assigned in random order to four exercise conditions: (1) FC at 35% O2max(FC35), (2) no cooling (NFC35), (3) FC at 70% O2max(FC70), and (4) no cooling (NFC70). Heart rate (f c), stroke volume (V s), and cardiac output ( c) were measured at rest and every 10 min of exercise using impedance cardiography. During FC35, the change in f c [mean (SE)] was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than NFC35 at 10 [22 (5) vs 31 (3) beats· min–1], 20 [29 (6) vs 35 (3) beats·min–1], and 30 [29 (5) vs 38 (4) beats·min–1] min. No differences in f c were observed between FC70 and NFC70. Furthermore, FC had no effect on V s or cat either exercise intensity. However, when comparing the FC70 and NFC70 conditions, there was a significant main effect (P<0.05) in mean arterial pressure (P a) response with cooling despite the fact that neither V s or cwere different from the NFC70 control. The increase (P < 0.05) in the estimated change in systemic vascular resistance ( a· c –1) could partly explain the relative rise in aat FC70. No pressor effect of cooling was observed at 35% O2max. The results suggest that the FC condition promotes exercise bradycardia at low levels of exercise and exerts a greater pressor response during moderate exercise.  相似文献

Summary Barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown from seed for 28 days in flowing solution culture were subjected to different root temperatures (3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 17, 25°C) for 14 days with a common air temperature of 25/15°C (day/night). Uptake of NH4 and NO3 ions was monitored separately and continuously from solutions maintained at 10 M NH4NO3 and pH 6.0. Effects of root temperature on unit absorption rate , flux and inflow were compared. After 5 days , and increased with temperature over the range 3–11°C for NH4 ions and over the range 3–13°C for NO3 ions, with little change for either ion above these temperatures. Q10 temperature coefficients for NH4 ions (3–13°C) were 1.9, 1.7 and 1.6 for , and respectively, the corresponding values for NO3 ions being 5.0, 4.5 and 4.6. For both ions, , and changed with time as did their temperature dependence over the range 3–25°C, suggesting that rates of ontogenetic development and the extent of adaptation to temperature may have varied among treatments.  相似文献

Summary Resting rates of O2 consumption against , exercise endurance times and during recovery from vigorous exercise were measured inSceloporus occidentalis captured near sea level and inS. graciosus captured above 2850 m. Oxygen consumption against was also measured inS. occidentalis captured above 2850 m. When was recorded continuously, as ambient was slowly reduced from 155 Torr, it became directly dependent upon ambient between 110 and 120 Torr. The critical for the high altitude lizards was lower than that for the lowland lizards, which enabled the former to maintain relatively higher 's when ambient was reduced below 120 Torr. The high altitude lizards also had significantly greater endurance when stimulated to exercise at 1600 m ( 130 Torr). Both the higher under hypoxia and the greater endurance roughly parallel a significantly greater maximum in the high altitude lizards. At a simulated altitude of 3600 m ( 100 Torr), maximum and rate of recovery of the O2 debt calculated from post active were significantly reduced in the lowland but not the high altitude lizards. The effects of simulated altitude conditions on the lowland but not the mountaine animals indicate adaptations to altitude in these sceloporine lizards. We did not find any consistent relationship between organ/body weight ratios or hematocrit and our measures of endurance or the altitude at which the lizards were captured.  相似文献

We have previously observed that 11-year-old children of low socio-economic status (LSES) showed a delayed physical growth of approximately 2 years and developed lower normalized short-term power output than children of high socio-economic status (HSES) of the same age. In contrast, maximal oxygen uptake per unit of fat free mass was no different in either group. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of anthropometric characteristics between HSES and LSES prepubertal children in aerobic and anaerobic performance. To compare children of the same body dimensions, 11-year-old boys (n = 30) and girls (n = 31) of LSES and 9-year-old boys (n = 21) and girls (n = 27) of HSES were studied. Anthropometric measurements, (direct test), maximal anaerobic power (P max, force-velocity test) and mean anaerobic power ( , Wingate test) were determined. In these children having the same body dimensions: mean were the same in LSES and HSES children [1.2 (SD 0.2)1-min–1];P max and were lower in LSES subjects [154.0 (SD 33.2) vs 174.6 (SD 38.4) W and 116.3 (SD 23.3) vs 128.2 (SD 28.0) W, respectively]; the linear relationships between and fat free mass were the same in LSES and HSES boys but, in the girls, the LSES group had lower values. For anaerobic performance, the relationships were significantly different: the slopes were the same but LSES values for the both sexes were lower. These results would suggest that factors other than differences in body dimensions alone were responsible for the lower performance of LSES girls and boys. Cultural factors and motor learning, structural and functional alterations of muscle induced by marginal malnutrition have been discussed.  相似文献

Based on the hypothesis that the relation between sweating rate and body temperature should be different during exercise and rest after exercise, we compared the sweating response during exercise and recovery at a similar body temperature. Healthy male subjects performed submaximal exercise (Experiment 1) and maximal exercise (Experiment 2) in a room at 27° C and 35% relative humidity. During exercise and recovery of 20 min after exercise, esophageal temperature (Tes), mean skin temperature, mean body temperature ( ), chest sweating rate ( ), and the frequency of sweat expulsion (F SW) were measured. In both experiments, andF SW were clearly higher during exercise than recovery at a similar body temperature (Tes, ). was similar during exercise and recovery, or a little less during the former, at a similarF SW. It is concluded that the sweating rate during exercise is greater than that during recovery at the same body temperature, due to greater central sudomotor activity during exercise. The difference between the two values is thought to be related to non-thermal factors and the rate of change in mean skin temperature.  相似文献

The development of membrane bioenergetic studies during the last 25 years has clearly demonstrated the validity of the Mitchellian chemiosmotic H+ cycle concept. The circulation of H+ ions was shown to couple respiration-dependent or light-dependent energy-releasing reactions to ATP formation and performance of other types of membrane-linked work in mitochondria, chloroplasts, some bacteria, tonoplasts, secretory granules and plant and fungal outer cell membranes. A concrete version of the direct chemiosmotic mechanism, in which H+ potential formation is a simple consequence of the chemistry of the energy-releasing reaction, is already proved for the photosynthetic reaction centre complexes.Recent progress in the studies on chemiosmotic systems has made it possible to extend the coupling-ion principle to an ion other than H+. It was found that, in ceertain bacteria, as well as in the outer membrane of the animal cell, Na+ effectively substitutes for H+ as the coupling ion (the chemiosmotic Na+ cycle). A precedent is set when the Na+ cycle appears to be the only mechanism of energy production in the bacterial cell. In the more typical case, however, the H+ and Na+ cycles coexist in one and the same membrane (bacteria) or in two diffeerent membranes of one and the same cell (animals). Features of pharmacological and metabolic sensitivity of potassium outward current dependent on the presence of Ca ions in the intracellular solution were investigated. Verapamil was found to produce depression and accelerated inactivation of this current. The blocking action of verapamil intensifies with an increase in extracellular concentration of calcium ions. Functioning of channels depends on intracellular metabolic processes. Current level declined during intracellular perfusion of the neuron with artificial saline. Reducing the temperature of the perfusing solution to 10°C produced a similar result. This decline could be avoided by introducing 2 mM ATP and 3 mM Mg ions into the intracellular solution; current decay could actually be reversed by intracellular application of exogenous protein kinase C. Polymyxin B (10–4 M), a protein kinase C blocker, depressed the component of outward potassium current dependent on extracellular Ca2+. Mechanisms possibly underlying Ca2+ action on via a phosphatidyl inositol metabolism is discussed in the light of the experimental findings obtained.A. A. Rectal (Tre), mean skin temperature ( sk) and sweating rate ( ) were measured in 4 residents of temperate climate under acute moderate heat exposure (designated EE in such an experimental situation), after 3 weeks in India (designated as EI) and in 8 Indian residents (designated as II) both at rest and during submaximal exercises at 2 different intensities. At rest, Tre is higher in EI (37.6°C) than in EE (36.8°C, P<0.01) and reaches 37.8°C in II. At the end of exercise, the increment in Tre seems to depend on work load only and to be independent of thermal environment; S follows a similar pattern in the 3 groups of subjects: sk is altered neither by exercise nor acclimatization. Under chronic heat exposure compared to acute conditions: (1) identical is achieved with higher Tre and similar sk so that the linear relationships vs Tre is shifted to the right. (2) the Tresk difference is greater at rest and during exercise: hence, skin blood flow, calculated from heat balance equation diminishes. In hot climate, a rise in Tre seems to be an adaptive response which allows the body to reduce skin blood flow.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if tolerance to exercise in the heat is related to maximal oxygen uptake (max 02) and sweating. Seven men with max 02 between 42 and 66 ml/(min·kg) underwent one 2-hr exposure at 24°C Tq while working on a bicycle ergometer at rel 02 of 28% ( 02 = 1.23 1/min). In the hot exposures the high capacity subjects had maximal sweat rates of 800 to 1,000 g/(hr·m2) while the lower capacity men sweated 300 to 400 g/(hr·m2). These differences in sweating were not related to neuromuscular stimuli, 02 (metabolic rate), Tre, Tre, s, s or tolerance time. Tolerance to exercise in the heat was not related to maximal 02 capacity when the subjects worked at the same relative load in spite of large differences in sweating. These results question the importance of the rate of sweating for predicting work performance in hot environments.
Zusammenfassung Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung war, zu prüfen, ob die Toleranz bei Arbeit in der Hitze in einer Beziehung steht zur maximalen O2-Aufnahme und Schwitzen. Sieben Männer mit V02 zwischen 42 – 66 ml/(min·kg) wurden belastet während 2 Stunden bei Ta 24°C und 3 × 2 Stunden bei 47°C mit Arbeit auf dem Fahrrad-Ergometer bei im Mittel von 28% V02 = 1.23 1/min. Während der Hitzebelastung zeigten die leistungsfähigen Personen Schweissekretionsraten von 800 – 1000 g/(hr·m2) und die wenig leistungsfähigen 300 – 400 g/(hr·m2). Diese Unterschiede waren ohne Beziehung zu neuromuskulären Stimuli, Stoffwechselrate, Tre, Tre, s, s oder der Toleranzzeit. Ausdauer bei Arbeit in der Hitze war ohne Beziehung zur maximalen V02-Kapazität, wenn die Personen bei der gleichen relativen Belastung arbeiteten tro grosser Unterschiede im Schwitzen. Die Ergebnisse stellen den Wert der Schweissekretionsrate zur Voraussage der Arbeitsleistung in der Hitze in Frage.

Resume Dans cette étude, on a cherché à voir si la tolérance au travail sous contrainte de chaleur était en relation avec la possibilité maximum d'absorption de O2 ( 02) d'une part, de transpirer d'autre part. 7 hommes présentant des 02 compris entre 42 et 66 ml/(min · kg) ont pédalé sur un ergomètre pendant 2 heures par une Ta de 24°C et 3 × 2 heures par 47°C et cela par une 02 relative de 28% ( 02 = 1,25 1/min). Durant l'effort sous contrainte de chaleur, les plus actifs ont eu des sécrétions de sueur de 800 à 1.000 g h–1 m–2 et les moins actifs de 300 à 400 g/h · m2. Ces différences étaient sans rapport avec les stimulus neuro-musculaires, le taux de métabolisme, Tre, Tre, Ts et Ts ou la durée de tolérance. L'endurance au travail sous contrainte de chaleur n'a pas été fonction de la capacité maximum de 02, lorsque les personnes travaillaient dans des conditions analogues, même si l'on a noté de grandes différences dans la transpiration. Ces résultats mettent en doute la représentativité du taux de sécrétion de sueur comme indicatif des possibilités de travailler en atmosphère chaude.

A study was conducted on 30 healthy soldiers (age: 40–46 years) to assess the effect of selected yogic exercises (asanas) on some physiological responses to cold exposure. They were randomly divided into two groups of 15 each. One group performed regular physical exercises of physical training (PT), while the other group practised yogic exercises. At the end of 6 months of training, both the groups were exposed together to cold stress at 10°C for 2 h, and the following parameters were periodically monitored during cold exposure: heart rate (fH), blood pressure (BP), cardiac output , oral temperature (Tor), skin temperature (T sk), respiratory rate (fR), minute ventilation , oxygen consumption , and shivering response by integrated electromyogram (EMG). There were progressive increases inBP, fR, , , and and decreases infH,T or andT sk during cold exposure in both the groups. However, the decrease inT or and the increases in and were relatively lower (P<0.01) in the yoga group as compared to the PT group. The shivering response appeared much earlier and was more intense in the PT group. These findings suggest that practice of yoga exercises may improve cold tolerance.  相似文献

The progress of bioenergetic studies on the role of Na+ in bacteria is reviewed. Experiments performed over the past decade on several bacterial species of quite different taxonomic positions show that Na+ can, under certain conditions, substitute for H+ as the coupling ion. Various primary Na+ pumps ( generators) are described, i.e., Na+-motive decarboxylases, NADH-quinone reductase, terminal oxidase, and ATPase. The formed is shown to be consumed by Na+ driven ATP-synthase, Na+ flagellar motor, numerous Na+, solute symporters, and the methanogenesis-linked reverse electron transfer system. InVibrio alginolyticus, it was found that , generated by NADH-quinone reductase, can be utilized to support all three types of membrane-linked work, i.e., chemical (ATP synthesis), osmotic (Na+, solute symports), and mechanical (rotation of the flagellum). InPropionigenum modestum, circulation of Na+ proved to be the only mechanism of energy coupling. In other species studied, the Na+ cycle seems to coexist with the H+ cycle. For instance, inV. alginolyticus the initial and terminal steps of the respiratory chain are Na+ - and H+-motive, respectively, whereas ATP hydrolysis is competent in the uphill transfer of Na+ as well as of H+. In the alkalo- and halotolerantBacillus FTU, there are H+ - and Na+-motive terminal oxidases. Sometimes, the Na+-translocating enzyme strongly differs from its H+-translocating homolog. So, the Na+-motive and H+-motive NADH-quinone reductases are composed of different subunits and prosthetic groups. The H+-motive and Na+-motive terminal oxidases differ in that the former is ofaa 3-type and sensitive to micromolar cyanide whereas the latter is of another type and sensitive to millimolar cyanide. At the same time, both Na+ and H+ can be translocated by one and the sameP. modestum ATPase which is of the F0F1-type and sensitive to DCCD. The sodium cycle, i.e., a system composed of primary generator(s) and consumer(s), is already described in many species of marine aerobic and anaerobic eubacteria and archaebacteria belonging to the following genera:Vibrio, Bacillus, Alcaligenes, Alteromonas, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Propionigenum, Clostridium, Veilonella, Acidaminococcus, Streptococcus, Peptococcus, Exiguobacterium, Fusobacterium, Methanobacterium, Methanococcus, Methanosarcin, etc. Thus, the sodium world seems to occupy a rather extensive area in the biosphere.  相似文献

To evaluate the order and the values of Markov properties of the time series of events, we have proposed a statistical measure dependency:D m = (H 0 H m )/H 0 , whereH 0 andH m are Shannon's entropy and them-th order conditional entropy, respectively. It is indicated that is a better point estimator ofD m, giving a total value of them-th order Markov process. Here and are the estimate ofD m and the arithmetic mean of when them-th order shuffling is made many times for a given observed series, respectively. The value represents Markov value of the orderm. Under the assumption that the series has continuous variables and the normal distribution, simplified dependency is defined by, where |S m | is the determinant of serial correlation coefficients. It is shown that is practically useful for the estimation of the order and the values of Markov processes with small sample size. It is also indicated that analysis is basically equivalent to the least mean-square analysis of autoregressive models.  相似文献

The hand blood flow ( ) was investigated in response to a wide range of general and local cutaneous thermal stimuli (0–36°C and 4–42°C respectively), the local stimulus consisting of a thermostatically controlled water bath for the right hand (Tw), and the general stimulus, the ambient room temperature (Ta). was measured at the right wrist by strain gauge plethysmography; it was seen to respond more significantly to variations in Tw than to those in Ta at cold to comfortable ambient temperatures (Ta<22°C). A paradoxical vasodilatation was observed at Tw=4°C (Lewis' hunting phenomenon). The graphs of versus T at average to high local cutaneous temperatures (Tw > 33°C) are remarkably similar, except for an upward shift at successively higher values of Tw. The slope (or vasomotor reactivity) is interpreted as being controlled by variations in Ta. The curves exhibited maximum values at Ta = 31°C. Their subsequent decrease could represent a thermoregulatory adaptation to environment-organism heat transfer, the relative vasoconstriction tending to reduce the transfer. Although the qualitative response was the same for both sexes, the absolute value of was generally greater in male than in female subjects.  相似文献

Summary Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were exposed to acidic soft water (pHin4.2–6.3) in the presence (93 g·l–1) or absence of Al. Fish were fitted with latex masks and opercular catheters to measure ventilation , pH changes at the gills, O2 consumption , ammonia excretion , and Al extraction. During 2–3-h exposures, was generally higher in Al-exposed fish over the pHin range 4.7–6.3. Alkalinization of expired water was about 0.3 pH units less in Al-exposed fish than in acid-only exposed fish at pHin 4.5–5.2, an effect attributable to both increased and to buffering by Al. During 44-h exposures to pHin 5.2 and 4.8 plus Al, increased greatly and expired water pH (pHex) decreased with time. There was a small increase in over 44 h at pH 4.4 plus Al, and no changes in pHex. In contrast, during 44-h exposures to pH 5.2, 4.8, and 4.4 in the absence of Al, such changes were much smaller or absent. During both short- and longerterm exposures, measured Al accumulation on the gills was only 5–18% of that calculated from cumulative Al extraction from the water, suggesting considerable sloughing of Al. In free-swimming trout, gill Al accumulation was greatest during exposure (2h) to Al at pH 5.2, lower at pH 4.8, and least at pH 4.4 and 4.0. Our results suggest that Al deposition occurs at the gills, causing respiratory and ionoregulatory toxicity, because the pH in the branchial micro-environment is raised above that in the acidic inspired soft water. Higher pH at fish gills may result in Al precipitation due to loss of solubility, or Al accumulation because of shifts in Al species to Al-hydroxide forms which more readily adsorb to the gills.Abbreviations pH ex expired pH - pH in inspired pH  相似文献
