For 14 samples of ventilated hay and 6 of fresh grass, digestibility was determined with young wethers. The contribution to the digestibility was calculated for the Weende components (crude protein, crude fibre, nitrogen-free extractives + fat) and for cell content and cell wall (Van Soest) components. For the cell content and crude protein, a hyperbolic relationship, y' = a − b/x between the digestibility coefficient of the components (y') and the percentage component in dry matter (DM, x) can be accepted with a sufficient degree of certainty. This means that the apparent digestibility of the cell content and crude protein increase with increasing concentration. The latter formula can be transformed into a linear regression y = ax − b where y = percentage digestible component in DM, a being an estimate of the true digestibility of the component and b an estimate of the endogenous excretion of the component. From these relationships some important practical conclusions can be drawn. For other dry matter components, such as crude fibre, nitrogen free extractives + fat and cell wall, the relationship between the digestibility coefficient and the percentage of the component in DM cannot be expressed by a simple regression line. The advantages of splitting the digestibility into a contribution from cell content and cell wall components versus splitting into contributions from the Weende components are discussed.By determination of the cell wall and its digestibility in vitro, a very good prediction for the dry matter digestibility of grass can be given, which is of great importance for plant breeding and grassland research.  相似文献

Four Icelandic (ICE) and four Danish Warmblood (DW) horses were used in a crossover study with two treatments to investigate the effect of breed and the effect of stage of maturity of haylage on the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of a diet consisting of sugar beet pulp, black oats and haylage early or late cut. Fibre was analysed as crude fibre (CF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and dietary fibre (DF = non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) plus lignin). In haylage all analysed fibre fractions increased with advancing stage of maturity, with the cell wall components cellulose, non-cellulosic residue, xylose and lignin causing this increase. Crude protein (CP) and sugars decreased with advancing stage of maturity. Feeding early cut haylage resulted in a significantly (p < 0.05) higher ATTD of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), energy, NDF, total NSP, DF and CP compared to feeding late cut haylage. There was a significantly (p < 0.05) higher ATTD of CF, DF and starch in ICE than in DW. Diet affected several faecal parameters with a significantly (p < 0.05) lower pH in faeces when horses were fed the early cut haylage. Concentrations of total short-chain fatty acids were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in faeces from horses fed early cut haylage, reflecting the higher fermentability (higher ATTD) of this diet. There was no marked effect of breed on faecal parameters. The DF analysis method gave the most appropriate differentiation of the fibre fractions and their digestibility, compared to the traditional CF, ADF and NDF analyses. A major advantage of the DF analysis is the capacity of recovering soluble fibres. The results suggested that ICE had higher ATTD of DF than DW, and this was caused by a tendency for a higher ATTD of cellulose, but further studies are required to verify that in general.  相似文献

The chemical composition of the now widespread tropical aquatic fern Salvinia molestawas analysed with regard to its suitability as a source of forage for ruminants. Three different stages of plant growth collected in Kerala, India, were air dried, brought to Germany, and used for Weende analysis, detergent fibre analysis, and the determination of gross energy, amino acids, tannins, and minerals. The concentration of 12.4% crude protein in sand-corrected dry matter (DM) and of some other nutrients in Salviniais comparable to that in conventional forage. However, the high content of crude ash (17.3% in DM) and of lignin (13.7%) and the presence of tannins (0.93%) may reduce acceptance as well as digestibility and therefore restrict the use of Salviniaas a potential feed source for ruminants.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine equations that predict ME in total mixed rations (TMR) based on routine methods. The ME content of 30 TMR for dairy cows was determined based on digestible crude nutrients obtained with wether sheep. Concentrations in the TMR (in g/kg DM) varied between 118 and 234 for crude protein, 26 and 48 for crude lipid, 131 and 250 for crude fibre, 281 and 488 for NDF, and 173 and 304 for ADF. Gas production ranged from 40.7 to 54.1 ml/200 mg DM, and enzymatically degraded organic matter from 652 to 800 g/kg DM. Digestibility [%] ranged from 68.6 to 84.0 for organic matter, from 55.6 to 84.3 for crude lipid, from 55.0 to 77.8 for crude fibre, from 57.6 to 77.0 for NDF and from 53.1 to 79.6 for ADF. ME ranged from 9.6 to 11.9 MJ/kg DM, and NEL from 5.7 to 7.4 MJ/kg DM. ME content was highly correlated with the concentration of both crude fibre and enzymatically degradable organic matter as well as with organic matter digestibility. A multiple regression equation based on crude fibre and crude lipid predicted ME with a reasonable goodness of fit (r2 = 0.81; sy.x = 2.4%). The inclusion of other nutrients, of neutral and acid detergent fibre, neither of gas production did improve the goodness of fit. The best prediction was achieved with inclusion of enzymatically degraded organic matter (r2 = 0.90; sy.x = 1.7%).  相似文献

Final instar Persectania ewingii (Westwood) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were fed seedling Triticum aestivum L. for 2 days to determine the approximate digestibility of the cell wall and cell content fractions. Cell wall content was estimated using a micro-analytical neutral detergent fibre technique. Approximate digestibilites of neutral detergent fibre, neutral detergent solubles and dry matter were calculated for individuals and pooled samples. P. ewingii larvae digested a small but significant proportion of the fibre ingested (13–21%), higher than that previously reported for herbivorous insects. The micro-analytical and previously used macro-analytical techniques produced similar estimates of digestibility although both techniques have inherent shortcomings, the latter requiring the pooling of samplex and the former limiting the number of replicates during chemical analysis. Differences in the amount of larval frass collected during the feeding trial (corrected for consumption) explained much of the variation in digestibility values, while there were no effects of larval mass, overall consumption and total frass produced on digestibility estimates. These results confirm that plant cell contents are the major source of nutrients to larval Lepidoptera although there is some chemical disruption of the plant cell wall.

Sodium hydroxide-treated or untreated wheat straw was included in a basal alfalfamaize diet at 0, 10, 20 and 40%. As the level of straw increased, the apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) by sheep, decreased linearly (P < 0.01), with a faster decrease (P < 0.05) for diets containing untreated straw. The digestibility of DM decreased by 0.22 and 0.41% and OM by 0.24 and 0.42% for treated and untreated straw diets, respectively, with each 1% increase of straw in the diets.Addition of treated straw increased (P < 0.05) digestibility of cell wall constituents (CWC), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and hemicellulose (HC). However, when untreated straw was added, the digestibility of HC was reduced, whereas the digestibility of CWC and ADF was dependent on the level of straw added. Increasing levels of NaOH-treated straw in the diets produced linear increases (P < 0.05) in digestibility of CWC, ADF and HC. However, significant (P < 0.05) linear or quadratic responses were not noted in the digestibility of CWC, ADF and HC with increasing levels of untreated straw in the diet. Apparent digestibility of crude protein was not affected by addition of either NaOH-treated or untreated straw to the diet.In general, although changes in nutrient digestibility of the basal component small, large changes in the digestibility of nutrients in the straw component were apparent and accounted for the major differences in digestibility of the diets. The absence of curvilinearity in the regression equations suggested that there were no associative effects.  相似文献

Plantain sheath (Musa sapientum) contained 6.4% dry matter and 3.4% crude protein, 31.4% crude fibre, 34.6% cellulose, 15.5% hemicellulose and 6% lignin in dry matter.

Digestibility in vitro studies with fistulated bucks revealed a dry matter disappearance of 53.3% after 24 h incubation. The digestibility of neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and cellulose after 24 h fermentation was 32.2, 21.5 and 30.3%, respectively. After 48 h fermentation, the dry matter digestibility increased to 63.4%, NDF to 47.0%, ADF to 32.2% and cellulose to 42.3%.

A 45-day feeding trial was conducted with 16 crossbred lambs. Plantain sheath replaced paragrass hay dry matter at 32.6, 54.7 and 76.6% levels. Dried plantain sheath, which contributed 14.1, 25 and 34.5% of total dry matter intake, helped a daily gain of 31.1, 28.9 and 37.8 g when fed mixed with concentrate feed.  相似文献

Digestibility trials of 23 pelleted diets, with one or two ingredients and having 8.7–53.5% acid detergent fibre (ADF) on a dry matter (DM) basis, were carried out in adult rabbits fed ad libitum. Using a step-wise linear regression approach, the relationship between the digestible energy content (DE) or the coefficient of digestibility of gross energy (dGE) and the chemical composition of diets was established. Excluding beet pulp, with a very high crude fibre digestibility (54.8%), the prediction equations obtained were: DE (MJ kg−1 DM) = 14.2 − 0.205 ADF + 0.218 EE + 0.057 CP (R2 = 0.965, RSD = 0.494) and dGE (%) = 83.2 − 1.07 ADF (R2 = 0.951, RSD = 3.15) where ADF, ether extract (EE) and crude protein (CP) are expressed as a percentage on a DM basis. When diets with level of EE or CP higher than 6% or 18% respectively (grape marc, olive oil cake, brewer's grains, sunflower meal) were also removed, the prediction equations became: DE = 15.9 − 0.219 ADF (R2 = 0.974, RSD = 0.391) and dGE = 85.6 − 1.20 ADF (R2 = 0.977, RSD = 2.02). The contents in DE, digestible crude protein and undigestible crude fibre of 21 ingredients are presented and discussed in comparison with other studies.  相似文献

Information about the effects of rising atmospheric CO2 concentration and drought on the feed value of maize silage and interactions with the thermal environment during feeding is limited. A free air carbon dioxide enrichment facility was operated in a maize field to generate an elevated CO2 concentration of 550 ppm. Drought was induced by the exclusion of precipitation in one half of all experimental plots. Plants were harvested, chopped and ensiled. In a balance experiment on sheep, the nutrient digestibility was determined for three climatic treatments (temperate, temperature humidity index (THI) 57-63; mild heat, THI 68-71; severe heat, THI 75-80). The CO2 concentration and drought did not alter the crude nutrient content of silage dry matter (DM) or nutrient and organic matter (OM) digestibility. Drought increased the concentration of deoxynivalenol (DON, p < 0.001). The drought-associated increase of DON was reduced by CO2 enrichment (p = 0.003). The lowest digestibility of acid detergent fibre (p = 0.024) and neutral detergent fibre (p = 0.005) was observed during the coldest climate. OM digestibility increased during mild heat (p = 0.023). This study did not indicate considerable alterations of the feed value of maize silage due to increased atmospheric CO2 and drought. Enriched CO2 may decrease DON contaminations during drought. The thermal environment during the balance experiment did not interact with feeding maize silage grown under elevated CO2, but may affect cell wall and OM digestibility.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to examine the characteristics of Eucheuma cottonii waste in order to analyse its potential as renewable material. The morphology of Eucheuma cottonii (raw and wastes) was investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the thermal behaviour through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the physical properties through FT-IR, XRD, gas pycnometer, particle size analyser, water absorption and moisture content analysis. The chemical compositions were determined by using acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) analysis. It was found that Eucheuma cottonii wastes have better thermal stability, higher crude fibre content, lower moisture content and similar density to the raw Eucheuma cottonii, which suggests that these biomass wastes have good potential as renewable filler material.  相似文献

Prediction of carbohydrate fractions using equations from the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) is a valuable tool to assess the nutritional value of forages. In this paper, these carbohydrate fractions were predicted using data from three sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cultivars, fresh or as silage. The CNCPS equations for fractions B2 and C include measurement of ash and protein-free neutral detergent fibre (NDF) as one of their components. However, NDF lacks pectin and other non-starch polysaccharides that are found in the cell wall (CW) matrix, so this work compared the use of a crude CW preparation instead of NDF in the CNCPS equations. There were no differences in the estimates of fractions B1 and C when CW replaced NDF; however, there were differences in fractions A and B2. Some of the CNCPS equations could be simplified when using CW instead of NDF. Notably, lignin could be expressed as a proportion of DM, rather than on the basis of ash and protein-free NDF, when predicting CNCPS fraction C. The CNCPS fraction B1 (starch + pectin) values were lower than pectin determined through wet chemistry. This finding, along with the results obtained by the substitution of CW for NDF in the CNCPS equations, suggests that pectin was not part of fraction B1 but present in fraction A. We suggest that pectin and other non-starch polysaccharides that are dissolved by the neutral detergent solution be allocated to a specific fraction (B2) and that another fraction (B3) be adopted for the digestible cell wall carbohydrates.  相似文献

Seven laboratory methods for predicting organic matter digestibility were tested and compared on 42 samples of grass hay, 56 of silages and 39 of pelleted forages and byproducts. For all samples digestibility in vivo was determined with wethers fed at a maintenance level. The methods investigated were: tabular digestibility coefficients, Weende components, cell wall components, summative equations (Van Soest), true organic matter digestibility in vitro (Van Soest), digestibility in vitro (Tilley and Terry) and nylon bag digestibility.None of the purely chemical procedures nor the tabular digestibility coefficients were sufficiently accurate for a practical prediction of organic matter digestibility. Considerably better results were obtained with methods using living rumen micro-organisms. The best results were obtained with the nylon bag technique, but digestibility in vitro, measured by the two-stage technique, also gave accurate predictions of digestibility.  相似文献

Insects contain significant amounts of fiber as measured by crude fiber, acid detergent fiber (ADF) or neutral detergent fiber (NDF). It has always been assumed that the fiber in insects represents chitin based on the structural similarity between cellulose and chitin and the fact that the ADF fraction from insects contains nitrogen. In this study, a number of insect species that are raised commercially as food for insectivores were analyzed for moisture, crude protein (nitrogen × 6.25), fat, ash, NDF, ADF, and amino acids. Additionally, the ADF fraction was analyzed for nitrogen and amino acids to determine if proteins might be present in the ADF fraction. The ADF fraction contained a significant amount of amino acids accounting for 9.3–32.7% of the ADF (by weight). The presence of amino acids in the ADF fraction means that using ADF to estimate insect chitin results in an overestimation of insect chitin content. Using ADF adjusted for its amino acid content, the estimated chitin content of these insect species ranged from 2.7–49.8 mg/kg (as is) and 11.6–137.2 mg/kg (dry matter basis). Additionally, these data suggest that for the species measured here the amount of chitin nitrogen is quite small (as a % of total nitrogen) and that crude protein (nitrogen × 6.25) provides a reasonable estimate of the true protein for most species of insects. The present study aimed to determine the nutrient and energy content of fresh and ensiled grape pomace (GP) from different grape varieties originating from Germany, and to estimate the feed value of dried white, dried red and ensiled white GP by calculating nutrient digestibility and the content of metabolisable energy (ME) and net energy lactation (NEL) measured in sheep as a ruminant model. GP from red cultivars had higher contents of organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), crude fibre (CF), total phenolic contents (TPC) and ME, whereas the concentrations of ash and sugar were lower than from white cultivars. Compared with untreated GP, ensiled GP had increased concentrations of CP (+19%), ether extract (EE; +23%) and CF (+12%) and a higher ME content (+7%) and markedly decreased concentrations of sugar (?99.6%) and TPC (?48%). The concentrations of dry matter, OM and ash were not different between ensiled and fresh GP. Compared with dried GP, ensiled GP had a higher nutrient digestibility (OM, +32%; CP, +43%; CF, +46%; neutral detergent fibre [NDF], +54%; acid detergent fibre [ADF], +69%) and higher energy values (ME, +16%; NEL, +19%). The digestibility of OM, CP, EE and CF and the energy content were higher for dried red than for dried white GP, whereas the digestibility of NDFOM and ADFOM was lower for dried red than dried white GP. In conclusion, the results show that both red and white GP are suitable dietary sources for enrichment with TPC. Furthermore, compared with drying ensiling of GP improves the feeding value of GP and is a good possibility of preserving the seasonally produced by-product of winemaking for ruminant feeding.  相似文献

The Hoatzin Opisthocomus hoazin is the only known bird with a well-developed foregut plant fermentation system; most fermentation takes place in the crop and caudal oesophagus. To test Hoatzin digestive efficiency, balance (total collection) trials with captive Hoatzins were made using two experimental diets of different composition and fibre content. Dry matter (DM) intakes were similar for the diets (mean = 62.8 g DM/kg body mass/ day). Average DM, organic matter and nitrogen digestibilities were not significantly different between diets, with average values of 72.9%, 75.0% and 78.3%, respectively. In vitro organic matter digestibilities by cow ruminal inoculum were very similar to organic matter digestibilities in live Hoatzins for both diets. Fibre digestibility was among the highest recorded for herbivorous birds. Cellulose and acid detergent fibre digestibilities were 58.8% and 52.7%, respectively. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility differed among diets—the higher the NDF content of the diet, the higher the NDF digestibility. The NDF digestibilities were 37.9% and 70.9% for the two diets with NDF concentrations of 32.4% and 37.3%, respectively. Differences in NDF digestibility can be attributed to the different concentrations of hemicellulose in the experimental diets. The high overall digestibility by captive Hoatzins is higher than values previously reported for other avian herbivores but similar to those of foregut-fermenting mammals on similar diets. The unique digestive strategy of the Hoatzin maximizes digestion of cell wall and cell contents. The high digestive efficiency in the Hoatzin is not predicted by allometric models of fibre digestion as a function of body mass. Other nutritional benefits, such as detoxification of plant secondary compounds and microbial synthesis of essential amino acids and vitamins, may explain the evolution of foregut fermentation in this avian folivore.  相似文献

To study the incorporation of carbon and nitrogen in different plant fractions, 3‐year‐old‐beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) seedlings were exposed in microcosms to a dual‐labelling experiment employing 13C and 15N throughout one season. Leaves, stems, coarse and fine roots were harvested 6, 12 and 18 weeks after bud break (June to September) and used to isolate acid‐detergent fibre lignins (ADF lignin) for the determination of carbon and nitrogen and their isotope ratios. Lignin concentrations were also determined with the thioglycolic acid method. The highest lignin concentrations were found in fine roots. ADF lignins of all tissues analysed, especially those of leaves, also contained significant concentrations of nitrogen. This suggests that lignin‐bound proteins constitute an important cell wall fraction and shows that the ADF method is not suitable to determine genuine lignin. ADF lignin should be re‐named as ligno‐protein fraction. Whole‐leaf biomass was composed of 50 to 70% newly assimilated carbon and about 7% newly assimilated nitrogen; net changes in the isotope ratios were not observed during the experimental period. In the other tissues analysed, the fraction of new carbon and nitrogen was initially low and increased significantly during the time‐course of the experiment, whereas the total tissue concentrations of carbon remained almost unaffected and nitrogen declined. At the end of the experiment, the whole‐tissue biomass and ADF lignins of fine roots contained about 65 and 50% new carbon and about 50 and 40% new nitrogen, respectively. These results indicate that significant metabolic activity was related to the formation of structural biopolymers after leaf growth, especially below‐ground and that this activity also led to a substantial binding of nitrogen to structural compounds.  相似文献

A laboratory method for determination of fibres insoluble by cellulase is suggested as a routine analysis for cattle compound feeds with varying proportion and quality of chemically treated straw and other fibrous components, in order to measure whether actual energy content corresponds to that declared.By a two-step analytical procedure, the total fibre is isolated by boiling with neutral detergent solution for 1 h, which removes the readily soluble carbohydrates, proteins and fat. By incubation of the isolated fibre in a solution of buffers and a commercial cellulase reagent for 48 h at 40°C the digestible fibre is removed. The organic matter in the residue, which is termed cellulase insoluble fibre (CIF), is a measure of unavailable organic matter for ruminants. The CIF content, total NDF and proximate constituents were determined in 47 compounds of extreme properties. Compared with digestibility in vitro (IVDOM), more organic matter was dissolved by the CIF-analyses in highly digestible feeds and less in feeds with low digestibility (IVDOM + fat = 87 ? 0.70 CIF).  相似文献

Genetic improvement of forage digestibility, especially utilizing marker assisted selection and recombinant DNA techniques, requires identification of specific biochemical traits and associated genes that impact digestibility. We undertook a study to identify cell wall (CW) traits of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) stems that were consistently and strongly correlated with in vitro neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility, a measurement that has been shown to correlate with animal performance. Spring and summer harvested lucerne stem material, for 2 years, from 24 individual plants in each of two germplasm sources were analyzed for 16 and 96 h in vitro NDF digestibility, and cell wall concentration and composition (monosaccharide constituents of cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin; and Klason lignin (KL)) by the Uppsala dietary fibre method using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated for the relationships among these cell wall traits and with in vitro NDF digestibility. Concentrations of the pectin monosaccharide components were all negatively correlated (r=−0.73 to −0.94) with total cell wall concentration. In contrast, the three most abundant cell wall components glucose (Glc), xylose (Xyl) and Klason lignin were not correlated, or only weakly positively correlated (r<0.35), with cell wall concentration. Cell wall concentration was consistently negatively correlated (r=−0.60 to −0.94) with both 16 and 96 h in vitro NDF digestibility. In contrast, Klason lignin concentration was only marginally correlated (r<0.30) with 16 h in vitro NDF digestibility, but strongly negatively correlated (r=−0.71 to −0.74) with 96 h in vitro NDF digestibility. This is consistent with previous reports which show that lignin affects potential extent of digestion, but not rate. Cell wall glucose and xylose concentrations were inconsistently correlated with fibre digestibility. The monosaccharide components of pectin were consistently positively correlated (r=0.54–0.90) with in vitro NDF digestibility, except for 96 h in vitro NDF digestibility of spring harvested stems. Growth environment (year) and germplasm source had only minor impacts on the preceding correlation patterns, whereas spring versus summer harvests accounted for the inconsistencies observed among correlations for cell wall traits. The results of this study indicate that genetic improvement of fibre digestibility of lucerne stems should target genes that reduce total cell wall concentration, perhaps by reducing the rate of xylem tissue deposition during maturation, and reduce Klason lignin and increase pectin concentrations in the cell wall to improve potential extent and rate of fibre digestibility, respectively.  相似文献

Summary Samples of leaves and fruits exploited as food items byTrachypithecus auratus sondaicus were analysed for nitrogen content, acid detergent fibre (ADF), pepsin cellulase digestibility (CDIG), condensed tannins (CT), total phenolics (TP) and protein precipitation capacity (PP) and compared with fruits and leaves not eaten. Differences in chemical measures for items eaten and not eaten were not statistically significant but trends indicate that leaves may have been selected for their lower fibre content and greater digestibility. Fruits eaten also had a higher mean level of CDIG and lower mean level of ADF than fruits not eaten but these measures are not considered to be of major importance in fruit selection as CDIG was lower and ADF higher in fruits eaten than in leaves eaten. Levels of CT, TP and PP capacity were higher in fruits eaten than in fruits not eaten but lower in leaves eaten than in leaves not eaten. The role of tannins and phenolics in food selection is discussed. Leaves (and fruits) were not strongly selected on the basis of protein content. Approximately half the dietary intake ofT. auratus sondaicus was leaves, a protein-rich food source. Possibly, protein levels in foliage at Pangandaran were sufficient that selection for this nutrient was not required. A nutrient other than protein (for example, soluble carbohydrates) may have been maximised through food selection. The protein/ADF ratio may provide an indicator of the acceptability of foliage in a habitat as potential food for a colobine. However, this ratio did not govern food selection byT. auratus sondaicus at Pangandaran.  相似文献
