The present paper illustrates the stratigraphic results of a transponder-navigated coring program carried out in 1978 on the southern Calabrian Ridge (Cobblestone Area 4) and western Mediterranean Ridge (Cobblestone Area 3).Semi-quantitative investigations of over 600 foraminiferal samples and 450 nannofossil slides from forty cores, with a total recovery of 333 m, comprise the data base of the study.Most of the sediments recovered are Late Pleistocene or Holocene in age. The high-resolution nannofossil biostratigraphic scheme recently proposed for the Quaternary, coupled with sapropel stratigraphy and with tephrachronology resulted in precise correlation of the cores.Mid-Pleistocene sediments were recovered in a single core from Area 4, and in one core from Area 3, both located on basin walls. Four cores from basin walls in Area 4 yielded Pliocene sediments. No sediments older than approximately 3 m.y. (foraminiferal Zone M Pl 4, Reticulofenestra pseudoumbilica nannofossil Zone) are exposed on the explored walls from the southern Calabrian Ridge. Early and Late Pliocene sediments were recovered from the walls of the deepest crater-like basin explored in Area 3, but only in dredges. In this latter area also two peculiar lithologies were cored, basically unfossiliferous, but thought to be pre-Pliocene in age: a mud breccia whose clasts yield a sparse assemblage of mid-Cretaceous planktonic foraminifera, and a dolomitic mudstone, which is attributed to the Late Messinian on the basis of correlation with a similar lithology cored at DSDP Site 374, and substantiated by analogy in X-ray controlled mineralogical composition.The fairly complete record of Late Pleistocene and Holocene sapropels recovered in the southern Calabrian Ridge discards the hypothesis that the southern part of the Ionian Sea did not undergo stagnant cycles during the ice ages.Another hypothesis relating the origin of Cobblestone topography to olistostromes is also considered untenable on the basis of the new data. The large number of cores, precisely located on a previously mapped, highly irregular bottom physiography, disproves that large-scale chaotic sedimentation occurred: debris flows recorded in base-of-slope cores document local slope failures.  相似文献

At specific times during the late Quaternary, a widespread low-salinity surface water layer was produced over the eastern Mediterranean which created stagnant conditions and associated deposition of sapropelic muds in the deep basins. The Strait of Sicily has been positioned above the anoxic deeper water masses and is therefore devoid of sapropel deposits. Sediment sequences in the region contain a valuable record of upper bathyal (200–1000 m) benthonic foraminiferal change during times of deep-basin stagnation.Quantitative examiniation of benthonic foraminiferal assemblages in Strait of Sicily Quaternary cores generally reveals changes coeval with sapropels S1, S2, S4, S5, and S6. The benthonic foraminiferal expression is seen as increases in frequency ofGlobobulimina affinis, Globobulimina pseudospinescens, Chilostomella mediterranensis, Bolivina dilatata, and otherBolivina species during intervals corresponding to the episodic abyssal stagnation events. Some cores also display a decrease inCassidulina carinata and an increase inArticulina tubulosa.Similar assemblage changes have been previously documented to be closely associated with the sapropel layers in the deep basins of the eastern Mediterranean (the actual sapropel layers usually do not contain benthonic foraminifera). However, in the Strait of Sicily area, the species exhibit less drastic changes than in the deep eastern basins because of the less severe anoxic conditions. In the deep eastern basins, benthonic foraminifera almost totally disappeared in sapropel layers; at the same time, there was a general reduction in foraminiferal numbers in the shallower Strait area.  相似文献

The development of a detailed planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy for the Late Quaternary (latest 180,000 years) has allowed the dating and correlation of sediments from the Strait of Sicily. Principal component analysis of the assemblages has extracted a climatic history similar to that based upon oxygen isotopic oscillations. Intercore correlations are supported by tephrochronology and sapropel layer stratigraphy. Identification of Termination IA and IB in several high sedimentation rate cores indicates that the Mediterranean Sea experienced a two-stage warming during the last deglaciation. Cores collected between water depths of 200 and 600 m contain an erosional hiatus near their tops, reflecting an increase in the Levantine Intermediate Water flow sometime since 25,000 years B.P. and as recently as 7000 years B.P., during deposition of the youngest sapropel layer. A distinct and unusual planktonic foraminiferal succession is associated with sapropel layers. This begins in a protosapropel layer immediately beneath a sapropel horizon and continues upwards to the immediately overlying oxidized layer.  相似文献

Noncalcareous Pleistocene sediments of the Central Arctic Ocean contain sparse benthic foraminiferal assemblages consisting entirely of agglutinated taxa. Deep water agglutinated foraminifera are studied from two piston cores collected from the Lomonosov Ridge and Amundsen Basin [Cores PS 2177-5 (KAL) and 2176-3 (KAL)]. Core PS 2177-5 (KAL) contains an assemblage of 10 species, dominated by Cyclammina pusilla Brady, and is interpreted to reflect a bathyal environment with variable organic flux and nutrition levels. Core PS 2176-3 (KAL) in the Amundsen Basin yielded a very depauperate benthic foraminiferal assemblage. It is assumed that the environment was inhospitable for agglutinated foraminifera.  相似文献

We investigated five time-equivalent core sections (180-110 kyr BP) from the Balearic Sea (Menorca Rise), the easternmost Levantine Basin and southwest, south, and southeast of Crete to reconstruct spatial patterns of productivity during deposition of sapropels S5 and S6 in the Mediterranean Sea. Our indicators are Ba, total organic carbon and carbonate contents. We found no indications of Ba remobilization within the investigated core intervals, and used the accumulation rate of biogenic Ba to compute paleoproductivity. Maximum surface water productivity (up to 350 g C/m2/yr) was found during deposition of S5 (isotope stage 5e) but pronounced spatial variability is evident. Coeval sediment intervals in the Balearic Sea show very little productivity change, suggesting that chemical and biological environments in the eastern and western Mediterranean basins were decoupled in this interval. We interpret the spatial variability as the result of two different modes of nutrient delivery to the photic zone: river-derived nutrient input and shoaling of the pycnocline/nutricline to the photic zone. The productivity increase during the formation of S6 was moderate compared to S5 and had a less marked spatial variability within the study area of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Given that S6 formed during a glacial interval, glacial boundary conditions such as high wind stress and/or cooler surface water temperatures apparently favored lateral and vertical mixing and prevented the development of the spatial gradients within the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) observed for S5. A non-sapropel sediment interval with elevated Ba content and depleted 18O/16O ratios in planktonic foraminifer calcite was detected between S6 and S5 that corresponds to the weak northern hemisphere insolation maximum at 150 kyr. At this time, productivity apparently increased up to five times over surrounding intervals, but abundant benthic fauna show that the deep water remained oxic. Following our interpretation, the interval denotes a failed sapropel, when a weaker monsoon did not force the EMS into permanent stratification. The comparison of interglacial and glacial sapropels illustrates the relevance of climatic boundary conditions in the northern catchment in determining the facies and spatial variability of sapropels within the EMS.  相似文献

Deep-sea sediments of the eastern Mediterranean harbour a series of dark, organic carbon-rich layers, so-called sapropels. Within these layers, the carotenoid isorenieratene was detected. Since it is specific for the obligately anaerobic phototrophic green sulfur bacteria, the presence of isorenieratene may suggest that extended water column anoxia occurred in the ancient Mediterranean Sea during periods of sapropel formation. Only three carotenoids (isorenieratene, beta-isorenieratene and chlorobactene) are typical for green sulfur bacteria and thus do not permit to differentiate between the approximately 80 known phylotypes. In order to reconstruct the paleoecological conditions in more detail, we searched for fossil 16S rRNA gene sequences of green sulfur bacteria employing ancient DNA methodology. 540 bp-long fossil sequences could indeed be amplified from up to 217 000-year-old sapropels. In addition, such sequences were also recovered from carbon-lean intermediate sediment layers deposited during times of an entirely oxic water column. Unexpectedly, however, all the recovered 16S rRNA gene sequences grouped with freshwater or brackish, rather than truly marine, types of green sulfur bacteria. It is therefore feasible that the molecular remains of green sulfur bacteria originated from populations which thrived in adjacent freshwater or estuarine coastal environments rather than from an indigenous pelagic population.  相似文献

Late Quaternary sedimentation and lithostratigraphic patterns on the Strait of Sicily platform are readily discernible from those in the adjacent deep Mediterranean basins. Strait cores are unusually uniform, show a high degree of bioturbation and include an important coarse bioclastic fraction. Lithofacies are correlated with depth and proximity to the Strait narrows. Stratification (alternating sand and mud turbidites, hemipelagic mud and ash layers) is best developed in three deep narrow basins in the Strait where benthic populations and rates of bioturbation are significantly lower than on the shallower neritic platform and banks.14C dates show that the top of some cores are truncated in the early Holocene at a time when black, organic-rich sapropel layers formed in the central and eastern Mediterranean. No sapropels are recovered on the Strait and, further, bioturbation structures occur throughout late Quaternary sections. These and concurrent faunal changes indicate that: (1) the Strait remained ventilated and swept by currents while density stratification and anaerobic conditions prevailed to the east; and (2) circulation was not blocked at the Strait during the last glacial-postglacial evolution. Sedimentological and related observations are best interpreted in terms of short-lived but important water mass fluctuations, including a possible reversal of currents, which took place during the early warming phase of the climatic curve.  相似文献

Eastern Mediterranean sediments are characterized by the occurrence of distinct, organic-rich layers, called sapropels. These harbour elevated microbial numbers in comparison with adjacent carbon-lean intermediate layers. A recently obtained culture collection from these sediments was composed of 20% of strains closely related to Rhizobium radiobacter, formerly classified as Agrobacterium tumefaciens. To prove and quantify the in situ abundance of R. radiobacter, a highly specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocol was developed. To convert quantification results into cell numbers, the copy number of rrn operons per genome was determined. Southern hybridization showed that our isolates contained four operons. Finally, quantitative PCR was applied to 45 sediment samples obtained across the eastern Mediterranean. Rhizobium radiobacter was present in 38 of 45 samples indicating an almost ubiquitous distribution. In total, 25-40 000 cells per gram of sediment were detected, corresponding to 0.001-5.1% of the bacterial cells. In general, the relative and absolute abundance of R. radiobacter increased with depth and was higher in sapropels than in intermediate layers. This indicates that R. radiobacter forms an active population in up to 200 000 years old sapropels. The present study shows for the first time that a cultivated subsurface bacterium is highly abundant in this environment.  相似文献

Sedimentation patterns in nine lake basins were examined where catchments were either clearcut, burned in recent history, or where there has been no recorded disturbance and the catchments consist of mature forests. Pronounced declines in sedimentation rates were observed in eight of eleven cores after 1980, in reference, clearcut, and burn lakes. The degree of change was positively correlated with the drainage ratio (catchment area: lake area), but was unrelated to land use history. The decline in sedimentation rates after 1980 coincide with a 60% decrease in catchment runoff and precipitation measured over the same time interval at the nearby Experimental Lakes Area. These results indicate that climatic changes over the past 20 years have had a greater effect on catchment erosion than either clearcutting or fire.  相似文献

通过对青藏高原西部班公湖钻孔和北部中昆仑山3个湖相剖面的孢粉研究,揭示青藏高原西部和北部地区全新世1万年期间植被的演替和气候变化,西部在全新世早期9900-7800yr.B.P.植被由荒漠转为草原,气候好转;中期7800-3500yr.B.P.,草原发展,气候较适宜,以7200-6300yr.B.P.为高温湿期,5500yr.B.P.和3500yr.B.P.出现干旱,晚期从3500yr.B.P.至今植被为荒漠,气候干旱,其中700yr.B.P.气候恶化。北部地区全新世时期为荒漠植被,当气候温湿时,蒿和禾本科,莎草科成份增加,藜科减少,气候干旱时则相反,北部全新世的气候分期和干湿波动与西部相近,两地在晚期气候朝干旱化发展。  相似文献

通过对崇明东滩DT孔的微体古生物学研究,结合沉积物粒度特征、环境磁学特征及14C测年分析,详细阐述了崇明东滩13.0kaBP年来的有孔虫组合特征。自下而上将该孔有孔虫划分出5个组合带,探讨了DT孔5个有孔虫组合带潮流作用变化特点,自组合带1(13.0—8.0kaBP)至组合带4(1.0—0.36kaBP)潮流作用依次增强;组合带4(1.0—0.36kaBP)至组合带5(0.36—0kaBP)潮流作用呈减弱趋势变化;沉积速率自组合带1(13.0—8.0kaBP)至组合带5(0.36—0kaBP)变化特点为较低→高→较高→低→较低;自13.0kaBP年来,按浅海→浅海-河口湾→三角洲前缘-前三角洲→河口沙坝→潮汐水道-潮滩的规律演变。  相似文献

To determine the localization of F-protein binding sites on myosin, the interaction of F-protein with myosin and its proteolytic fragments in 0.1 M KCl, 10 mM K-phosphate pH 6.5 was studied, using sedimentation, electron microscopic and optical diffraction methods. Sedimentation experiments showed that F-protein binds to myosin and myosin rod rather than to light meromyosin or S-1. The F-protein binding to myosin and rod is of a similar character. The calculated values of the constants of F-protein binding to myosin and rod are 2.6 X 10(5) M-1 and 2.1 X 10(5) M-1, respectively. The binding sites are probably located on the subfragment-2 portion of the myosin molecule. The number of F-protein binding sites on myosin calculated per chain weight of 80 000 is 5 +/- 1. The sedimentation results were confirmed by electron microscopic data. F-protein does not bind to light meromyosin paracrystals, but decorates myosin and rod filaments with the interval of 14.3 nm regardless of whether F-protein is added before or after filamentogenesis. A comparison of optical diffraction patterns obtained from myosin and rod filaments with those from decorated ones revealed a marked enhancement of meridional reflection at (14.3 nm)-1 in the latter case.  相似文献

The dynamics of the nutrient pools and their stoichiometry as well as their control by ecosystem metabolism (benthic and planktonic) and benthic–pelagic exchanges (sedimentation rates and sediment waterfluxes) were examined in the Mediterranean littoral (Blanes Bay, NE Spain). Dissolved organic nitrogen comprised about half of the nitrogen present in the water column and the carbon pool was dominated by the inorganic pool (95% of the carbon present in the water column). The dissolved and particulate organic pools were deficient in P relative to C and N, indicating a rapid recycling of P from organic matter. The pelagic compartment was heterotrophic, supported by significant allochthonous inputs of land material, which also contributed greatly to the sedimentary inputs (37% of total sedimenting carbon). In contrast, the benthic compartment was autotrophic, with the excess net benthic community production balancing the deficit in pelagic community production, leading to metabolic equilibrium at the station studied. Sedimentary inputs of nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon exceeded the benthic release, indicating that the benthic compartment acted as a sink for nutrients, consistent with its autotrophic nature. Carbon inputs to the benthic compartment also exceeded requirements, due to the allochthonous subsidies to the system, so that the benthic compartment stored or exported organic carbon. Sedimentologic and geochemical analyses of four cores from Lake Edward, Uganda-Congo, document a complex record of moisture balance in the Edward basin from 11?000 cal yr BP to present. Highly organic, diatomaceous muds provide evidence for shifts in wind intensity and stratification within an early Holocene wet phase. Lake level variations within this period may have shifted due to tectonic lowering of the lake’s outlet level. The onset of mid-Holocene aridity, as documented by the appearance of authigenic calcite at 5200 cal yr BP, initiated a period of falling lake levels that culminated in a late Holocene lowstand between 4000 and 2000 cal yr BP. This lowstand is documented by coarse sediments whose fabric and mineralogy depend on the core site. Although different cores yield different ages for this regression, it appears that declining lake levels culminated in a maximum lake lowstand of −14 m. Lake levels then rose rapidly, attaining modern positions by 1700 cal yr BP. This lake level history suggests that although many paleoclimatic changes in Africa are apparently synchronous throughout northern hemispheric Africa, other events may be spatially heterogeneous. These patterns highlight the need for a well-dated network of paleoclimate sites within the African continent.  相似文献

Viruses are now recognized as a key component in pelagic systems, but their role in marine sediment has yet to be assessed. In this study bacterial and viral densities were determined at nine deep-sea stations selected from three main sites (i.e., the Sporades Basin, the Cretan Sea, and the Ierapetra Trench at depths of 1,232, 1,840, and 4,235 m, respectively) of the Eastern Mediterranean. The three areas were characterized by different phytopigment and biopolymeric carbon concentrations and by changes in the protein and carbohydrate pools. A gradient of increasing trophic conditions was observed from the Sporades Basin (North Aegean) to the Ierapetra Trench (South Aegean). Viral densities (ranging from 1 × 109 to 2 × 109 viruses ml of sediment−1) were significantly correlated to bacterial densities (n = 9, r2 = 0.647) and reached values up to 3 orders of magnitude higher than those generally reported for the water column. However, the virus-to-bacterium density ratio in deep-sea sediments was about 1 order of magnitude lower (range of 2 to 5, with a modal value of 2.6) than in pelagic environments. Virus density decreased vertically with depth in sediment cores at all stations and was below detection limits at the 10-cm depth of the abyssal sediments of the Ierapetra Trench. Virus density in the sediment apparently reflected a gradient of particle fluxes and trophic conditions, displaying the highest values in the Sporades Basin. The low virus-to-bacterium ratios and their inverse relationship with station depth suggest that the role played by viruses in controlling deep-sea benthic bacterial assemblages and biogeochemical cycles is less relevant than in pelagic systems.  相似文献

Analytical ultracentrifugation, thermal denaturation, and electron microscopy have been used to study nucleoprotein core particles, obtained from disrupted type 5 adenovirus and partially purified on glycerol density gradients. Electron microscopy at low salt concentrations has shown that the cores are homogeneous particles with characteristic structures, which vary with conditions of observation from a fairly loose network of fibers to a highly condensed, compact particle. Sedimentation measurements in the analytical ultracentrifuge, both by boundary and by band techniques, show that the cores are relatively homogeneous in solution and have sedimentation coefficients near 185 S at low salt concentrations, about 243 S in 1 or 2 M NaCl, and 376 S in 1 mM MgCl2. Correlation of sedimentation data with electron microscopic observations suggests that the 185 S particle has a loose, fibrous structure, while the faster species are more highly condensed particles. The melting temperature of the cores in 5 mM Tris/HCl is 79 degrees C, which is 10 degrees C higher than the Tm for purified, viral DNA. This indicates that the protein enhances the stability of DNA in the nucleoprotein complex.  相似文献

The benthic foraminiferal assemblages of two cores from the late-Holocene, organic-carbon-rich and carbonate-poor, deep-sea sediments of the eastern depression of the Sea of Marmara have been studied. They were deposited under high level of primary productivity and poorly oxygenated bottom-water conditions; they show low diversity and are dominated by a group of species adapted to an infaunal life style with wide bathymetric distribution (ca. 70–2000 m) in the Mediterranean Sea. Oxygen deficiency down to about 0.5 ml/l does not seem adversely to affect the rate of reproduction of the dominant species belonging to Melonis, Chilostomella, buliminids, and bolivinitids. Their distribution is primarily controlled by substrate conditions.Faunal similarities with fossil assemblages in association with some late-Quaternary sapropels and related facies from the eastern Mediterranean basins suggest that they were deposited under palaeo-oceanographic conditions closely similar to those of the modern Sea of Marmara.  相似文献

Tephrochronology uses recognizable volcanic ash layers (from airborne pyroclastic deposits, or tephras) in geological strata to set unique time references for paleoenvironmental events across wide geographic areas. This involves the detection of tephra layers which sometimes are not evident to the naked eye, including the so-called cryptotephras. Tests that are expensive, time-consuming, and/or destructive are often required. Destructive testing for tephra layers of cores from difficult regions, such as Antarctica, which are useful sources of other kinds of information beyond tephras, is always undesirable. Here we propose hyperspectral imaging of cores, Self-Organizing Map (SOM) clustering of the preprocessed spectral signatures, and spatial analysis of the classified images as a convenient, fast, non-destructive method for tephra detection. We test the method in five sediment cores from three Antarctic lakes, and show its potential for detection of tephras and cryptotephras.  相似文献

Diatoms were studied quantitatively in six latest Quaternary (⋍70 kyr B.P. to Recent) piston cores from the westernmost Mediterranean, the Alboran Basin, and the Atlantic region immediately to the west of the Straits of Gibraltar.The Atlantic cores completely lack diatoms. In the Alboran Basin, diatoms are common from late Stage 3 (⋍27.5 kyr B.P.) to Termination Ib (9 kyr B.P.) and in Recent core tops, but are absent in the other latest Quaternary intervals. Maximum accumulation of diatoms and highest abundance of species normally in sediments associated with increased productivity occurred during the latest Quaternary deglaciation, in the first phase of Termination I (⋍14.8 kyr B.P.).In the modern Alboran Basin, a region of high biological productivity occurs immediately east of the Gibraltar Straits. This high productivity results from upwelling associated with the interaction between the Atlantic inflow and the bottom topography near the Spanish coast. The upwelled nutrient-rich waters are then advected to the east and southeast by the surficial anticyclonic gyral circulation. Late Quaternary variations in diatom abundance are considered to reflect changes in this upwelling intensity with highest diatom abundances inferred to result from increased upwelling associated with an intensification of the anticyclonic gyral circulation. Highest inferred upwelling rates occurred during the first phase of latest Quaternary deglaciation. It is possible that an intensification of circulation within the Mediterranean Basin as a whole occurred from late Stage 3 to mid Termination I because widespread hiatus formation has been reported at this time in the Straits of Sicily due to an increase in the formation of intermediate waters. Diatoms were not preserved in other latest Quaternary intervals due to insufficient productivity to counterbalance their dissolution.  相似文献

Abundant calcispheres occur in Upper Carnian and Norian hemipelagic limestone successions of the Southern Apennines and Sicily. They exhibit a variety of morphologies that were investigated with optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The most common morphology is that of a full solid sphere of radiaxial calcite crystals, 20–22 μm in diameter on average, with or without a minor hollow in the center. Smaller forms may be clusters of sub-micron crystals, only rarely disposed as to form a spherical test with a diameter of 10 μm or less. Larger forms are similar to small forms (clusters or spheres of sub-micron crystals) with an epitaxial calcite overgrowth. The taxonomic attribution of these calcispheres is uncertain, mostly because of their poor preservation, but a comparison is possible with some Mesozoic calcispheres attributed to calcareous dinocysts. The amount of epitaxial overgrowth is variable, but in most cases much larger than the original sphere. This prevents a significant evaluation of the contribution of calcispheres to carbonate pelagic sedimentation by point counting in thin-section. However, it can be shown that calcispheres become abundant only after a major climatic perturbation dated at the end of the Early Carnian, known as the Carnian Pluvial Event (CPE). This event involved a strong and prolonged enhancement of the hydrological cycle, with consequent supply of excess hydrogen carbonate to the oceans and increased seawater alkalinity. Although calcispheres of this type are known at least from the Middle Triassic, it is only shortly after the CPE that they become abundant, and the first common occurrence of calcareous nannoplankton in the western Tethys is thus Late Carnian in age.  相似文献
