The Upper Mississippi River is characterized by a series of locks and dams, shallow impoundments, and thousands of river channelization structures that facilitate commercial navigation between Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Cairo, Illinois. Agriculture and urban development over the past 200 years have degraded water quality and increased the rate of sediment and nutrient delivery to surface waters. River enhancement has become an important management tool employed to address causes and effects of surface water degradation and river modification in the Upper Mississippi River Basin. We report information on individual river enhancement projects and contrast project densities, goals, activities, monitoring, and cost between commercially non‐navigated and navigated rivers (Non‐navigated and Navigated Rivers, respectively). The total number of river enhancement projects collected during this effort was 62,108. Cost of all projects reporting spending between 1972 and 2006 was about US$1.6 billion. Water quality management was the most cited project goal within the basin. Other important goals in Navigated Rivers included in‐stream habitat improvement and flow modification. Most projects collected for Non‐navigated Rivers and their watersheds originated from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the USDA were important sources for projects in Navigated Rivers. Collaborative efforts between agencies that implement projects in Non‐navigated and Navigated Rivers may be needed to more effectively address river impairment. However, the current state of data sources tracking river enhancement projects deters efficient and broad‐scale integration.  相似文献

The Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) is a large and diverse river system that changes character along its 1,200 mile network of rivers and canals and 2.6 million acres of floodplain. It supports more than 30 million people in its watershed, a significant commercial waterway, more than a million acres of “floodplain” agriculture and about one-half million acres of river-floodplain managed for fish, wildlife, and recreation. Large-scale geomorphology and climate patterns largely determine the hydrologic characteristics of a nested hierarchy of UMRS river reaches. The human impacts above are also important drivers determining hydrologic characteristics within the hierarchy. Understanding the relationship among physical and chemical processes and ecological responses is critical to implement an adaptive management framework for UMRS ecosystem sustainability. Historic or contemporary data from 42 locations were used to examine changes in UMRS hydrology and to demonstrate the utility of a multiple reference condition analysis for river restoration. A multivariate mathematical framework was used to show how river stage hydrology can be characterized by the variability, predictability, seasonality, and rate of change. Large-scale “geomorphic reaches” have distinct hydrologic characteristics and response to development throughout the UMRS region, but within navigation pool hydrology is similar among all impounded reaches regardless of geomorphic reach. Reaches with hydrologic characteristics similar to historic reference conditions should be examined to determine whether those characteristics support desired management objectives. Water levels can be managed, within limits to support navigation and agriculture, to more closely resemble natural hydrology for the benefit of a variety of species, habitats, and ecological processes.  相似文献

Abstract We investigated possible effects of the hydrodynamics at the water/sediment interface on river bed biofilms within the reservoir Freudenau (Vienna, Austria) of the Danube River during the period 1996/97. Two study sites (OBB and SSF) that differed in the magnitude of surface/subsurface water exchange were selected and intersite comparisons revealed higher organic matter, bacterial cell numbers, and esterase activity in SSF with lower horizontal outflow. Concentrations of colloidal carbohydrates and uronic acids were unaffected by hydrodynamics. The relative contribution of uronic acids to bulk colloidal carbohydrates was higher in the low-flow site SSF. The distribution patterns of this relative contribution generally matched the subsurface flow pattern. Shortly after impoundment in March 1996 and along with decreased surface flow velocity, maximal biofilm carbohydrate exopolymers concurred with minimal esterase activity in OBB. We hypothesize that this inverse relationship is due to increased diffusional resistance within the exopolymer biofilm matrix that reduces mass transfer and hydrolytic activity. These results, to our knowledge, are the first evidence for microbial participation in the clogging of a large river bed. Biofilm-associated organic carbon increased significantly by a factor of ∼3.3 to 4.4 with progressive clogging as determined by the sediment leakage coefficient, which increased ∼3.8 times. Concomitantly, with ongoing clogging, esterase activity exhibited increasingly higher values at the interface relatively to deeper sediment layers, which translates into steeper depth gradients. Furthermore, minimal inflow from the surface water into the river bed along with steepest esterase gradients concurred with a senescent benthic algal bloom. This suggests an important role for algae in clogging. Either algae obstruct voids mechanically, or their exudates fuel heterotrophic bacteria that in turn are involved in clogging processes. Plankton hauls were made with 55 m Hydrobios nets at one Jamieson and six Benin River stations at monthly intervals for 12 and 24 months during 1981/82 and 1986–1988, respectively. In all, a 100 km stretch of the Benin River and its tributary, the Jamieson, were covered. Fifty species of Rotifera were recorded. About 80% were cosmopolitan. The turbulent nature of the river is reflected in a diversity of Lecanidae found, although the dominant species were Keratella tropica (Apstein) and Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) (Brachionidae). Spatial investigations revealed the euryhaline nature of Brachionus plicatilis (O. F. Muller), and showed most Benin River rotifers to be freshwater inhabitants.  相似文献

The distribution, habitat association, group size, population structure, and prey availability of river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) were studied from November 1993-June 1994 in the Cinaruco River, a tributary of the Orinoco River that forms the southern boundary of Venezuela's Santos Luzardo National Park. Dolphins were sampled from a boat using modified strip-width transects, for a total of 418 h. The study area was 1.67 km2, and contained 20 km of water courses. Like other rivers of this region, the Cinaruco River undergoes a seasonal flood cycle. Dolphins were seen most often during the period of falling water (41% of total sightings) and least often during the rising water period (24% of total sightings). Dolphins were seen most often in confluence areas (35% of total sightings) and were seldom seen in side channels (13% of total sightings). The presence of rocks or sandbanks was associated with a greater frequency of dolphin sightings, and sightings increased with habitat heterogeneity. Average group size for the 8-mo study was 2.0 (±1.0) and was largest during the rising water period. Calves were first sighted during the end of the dry season and became more common during the early flood season. Six individuals were photo-identified and resighted with one sighted eight times over 186 d. The fish diversity of the study area was high, with 161 species documented in our samples. The stomach of one Inia contained 15 fishes representing at least 4 species.  相似文献

Steelpoort River has been adversely affected by human activities in the catchment. Water and sediment quality of the river was assessed in 2015. The concentrations of some of the metals in water were found to be high and exceeded the guideline values and the concentrations of metals in sediment were found exceeding the guideline values for Cr, Cu and Zn. The high concentrations of Cu and Zn at Site 1 and Site 2 (upstream) could have originated from anthropogenic sources, such as fertilisers and pesticides from discharge of agricultural wastes, whereas the high concentrations of Cr at Site 3, Site 4 (midstream) and Site 5 (downstream) could have originated from the mine waste, and from domestic/ industrial wastes respectively. The principal component analysis results showed two main components: PC-1 with high positive loading of Cu and Mn, and PC-2 with high positive loading of Zn. These findings indicate the presence of pollution. Therefore, control measures should be implemented to reduce river contamination from anthropogenic sources.  相似文献

Periphyton production in Fort River, Massachusetts   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
SUMMARY. The primary production and general ecology of a periphyton community of a New England, lowland stream were studied over a seventeen-month period. Temperature, light, periphyton chlorophyll-α, and community structure were monitored regularly. Seasonally distinct chlorophyll peaks coincided with the light maximum in early May, just prior to the appearance of leaves of riparian trees, and again in autumn after terrestrial leaf fall. During midwinter, despite low light and temperature levels and high stream discharge, mean chlorophyll concentrations remained similar to summer values.
A mathematical expression relating periphyton photosynthesis per unit chlorophyll-α to temperature, light and periphyton density was established with submersible light-dark chambers in situ . Survey data collected over the study period were employed in the empirical equation to estimate seasonal variations in periphyton primary production. Weekly mean daily estimates of periphyton gross production ranged from < 0.1 g O2 m−2, during midwinter, to 6.5 g O2 m−2 during early May. Estimated annual periphyton gross production and respiration were 0.58 and 1.27 kg O2 m−2, respectively. Factors influencing seasonal variations of Fort River periphyton standing crop are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

A small collection of obsidian and chalcedony microblades, from a site near Calgary, Alberta, is described and compared with other microblades from the Plains and from the Plateau. Although the age and cultural affiliations of the micro blades are not certain, there is some evidence to suggest that they are early in the Plains sequence. The microblades have some distinctive attributes including ridge flakes, for which a typology is suggested. A comparison of the High River microblades with a large sample from the Interior Plateau of British Columbia suggests that the stimulus for the Alberta micro blades did not derive from the Plateau.  相似文献

The rotifer assemblage of the dendritic tidal Warri River wasinvestigated at four sampling points from July 1981 to July1982. Forty-one species of Rotifera were identified. Five ofthese — Anuraeopsis racenesi Berzins Keratella cochlearismacracantha Lauterbom, Monostyla lunaris Pawlowsky,M. stenroosiMeissner and Trichocerca similis grandis Hauer — are beingrecorded for the first time in West Africa. The Warri Riverrotifers are 65% cosmopolitan and 20% pantropical although therewas no species limited to African waters only. The dominantrotifers in the Warri River were Keratella tropica and K. cochleariswhich were found in the predominantly freshwater sampling stationat Udu Bridge to Warri and Orugbo Creek where low brackish watersalinities and conductivities are observed from December orJanuary to April each year. The preponderance and longitudinaldistribution of these two well-known cyclomorphic rotifers providesan opportunity to study their salinity tolerance and the effectof salinity and conductivity on their cyclomorphosis by samplingalong the length of the river from Udu Bridge to Forcados wherethe Warri River joins the Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

In samples of the Tra Ly River in the Red River mouth (Northern Vietnam), 46 species of free-living nematodes have been found, five of which are new to science. The species dominant in abundance were Ptycholaimellus adocius Dashchenko et Belogurov, 1984; Dichrocuadora affinis Gagarin et Nguyen Vu Thanh, 2011; and Tripyloides minor sp.n. The species composition of nematodes is listed and the new species Tripyloides minor sp. n. is described and illustrated. The nematode described and illustrated by Riemann (1970) from watercourses of Colombia as Tripyloides amazonicus (Gerlach, 1957) is recognized as a valid species (Tripyloides riemanni nom.n).  相似文献

This study presents the first report of length‐weight relationships (LWRs) for five fish species (Parabotia fasciata, Megalobrama mantschuricus, Plagiognathops microlepis, Rhodeus sinensis, Rhodeus fangi) and maximum total lengths for four species from the Qingjiang River, Yangtze River basin, China. Specimens were sampled in six sections along the Qingjiang River over a period of 1 year between April 2016 and March 2017 with gill nets (150 × 10 m; mesh size: 1–14 cm), benthic fyke nets (mouth opening: 12 × 12 cm; 10 m; mesh size: 1 cm) and stationary lift nets (10 × 10 m; mesh size: 0.8 cm).  相似文献

Summary This paper describes the diatom flora of the Grand River, Ontario, Canada. Samples were collected systematically from the river over a period of several years at tweleve stations. The diatom flora of the river is typical of temperate alkaline rivers. The flora is rich in species and variaties, and is similar to that from many parts from North Eastern United States. A total of 273 taxa of diatoms were identified. There is a tendency for the number of species per sample to increase downstream. The flora of the estuary in characteristic with a great variety of taxa occuring in small numbers. Most of the species are alkaliphilous and indifferent in the halolian spectra. Part of Ph. Arctic cisco Coregonus autumnalis have a complex anadromous life history, many aspects of which remain poorly understood. Some life history traits of Arctic cisco from the Colville River, Alaska, and Mackenzie River basin, Canada, were investigated using molecular genetics, harvest data, and otolith microchemistry. The Mackenzie hypothesis, which suggests that Arctic cisco found in Alaskan waters originate from the Mackenzie River system, was tested using 11 microsatellite loci and a single mitochondrial DNA gene. No genetic differentiation was found among sample collections from the Colville River and the Mackenzie River system using molecular markers (P > 0.19 in all comparisons). Model-based clustering methods also supported genetic admixture between sample collections from the Colville River and Mackenzie River basin. A reanalysis of recruitment patterns to Alaska, which included data from recent warm periods and suspected changes in atmospheric circulation patterns, still finds that recruitment is correlated to wind conditions. Otolith microchemistry (Sr/Ca ratios) confirmed repeated, annual movements of Arctic cisco between low-salinity habitats in winter and marine waters in summer.  相似文献

构建精度高,适用性强的水生生物生境适宜性评价模型,为河流生境质量评价和生境修复提供理论依据。以长江一级支流桥边河为例,采用典范对应分析和独立性分析,筛选出影响桥边河大型底栖无脊椎动物优势种河蚬生境质量的关键化学因子和物理因子,利用广义加性模型与多项式拟合模型构建生境因子与生物选择的关系。结果表明:(1)影响桥边河河蚬生境质量的主要因子为CODMn、TN、DO、Tur(浊度)和Dep(水深);其中CODMn、TN、Tur、Dep与大型底栖无脊椎动物分布成负相关,DO与大型底栖无脊椎动物分布成正相关;(2)桥边河流域河蚬的最适宜CODMn含量为1.228 mg/L,最适宜TN含量为0.269 mg/L,最适宜DO含量为11.170 mg/L,最适宜Dep为0.3 m,最适宜Tur为1.130 NTU。(3)线性拟合情况下两种方法均适用;非线性拟合情况下广义加性模型较优于传统多项式拟合模型,且GAM模型在处理离散程度大的数据集时,可以很好的规避多项式拟合过程中出现的过拟合现象。研究显示,运用GAM模型可以更加精确、合理的模拟生境因子与生物选择之间的关系。  相似文献

将2004年4~12月对木里县木里河、水洛河流域的鸟类调查结果与1928年美国博物学家约瑟夫.洛克(Joseph F Rock)在该区域内的鸟类调查记录比较,结果表明:①2004年调查的种类为123种,少于1928年调查记录139种,而且2004年调查的时间更长;②2004年调查鸟类群落的多样性指数和均匀度都小于1928年;③2004年调查鸟类的优势种有5种,常见种12种,主要为农耕-民居生境鸟类,1928年没有优势种,常见种有35种,主要为森林-灌丛生境鸟类;④鸟类区系构成没有产生大的变化。优势类群变化的主要原因是海拔3000m以下森林和灌丛生境受到干扰,蜕变为农耕地-民居生境,该区域的生境与1928年相比,已受到了破坏。  相似文献

2011年夏秋季,在上海市全境83个河道断面开展了大型底栖无脊椎动物采样,共获取底栖动物20个分类单位(种).9个极严重污染断面未采集到活体大型底栖生物,生境基本丧失.其余74个有活体生物断面,采用三种常用生物指数:Shannon-Wiener多样性指数、Hilsenhoff耐污指数、Goodnight修正指数分别进行计算及评价.Shannon-Wiener多样性指数判别为25个严重污染和49个重污染断面;Hilsenhoff耐污指数划分38个重污染、5个中污染和31个轻污染断面;Goodnight修正指数划分33个重污染、2个中污染和39个轻污染断面.与典型河道断面的水质理化指标监测值进行对照,Shannon-Weiner多样性指数对河道水质评价的准确度较低,Hilsenhoff生物指数和Goodnight修正指数的水质评价效率及准确度均较高,断面污染等级与水质理化指标基本对应.  相似文献
