The macrozoobenthic community structure and dynamics at low salinities (0.3–6 psu) in a Mediterranean lagoon (Monolimni lagoon) were investigated. Samples were collected monthly from February 1998 to February 1999 at two sampling stations. Community structure was analyzed by means of uni‐ and multivariate methods. 21 taxa were collected; the amphipod Corophium orientale and the gastropod Ventrosia maritima dominated the assemblages. Total abundance peaked (50,000–60,000 individuals m–2) in mid or late autumn. Community structure showed an almost even seasonal periodicity; seasonal changes were mainly derived from the intense variation in abundance of most species and the non–occurrence of a few ones (e.g. Corophium insidiosum, Polydora ciliata) in spring and summer. Non– occurrence, which led to a depression of the most diversity indices, was possibly the only direct impact of the extremely low salinities (~0.3 psu) on community structure. The main structuring factors of the community in the deeper outer part of the lagoon were water temperature and depth, and in the innermost part, where a Ruppia maritima meadow occurred, were water temperature and predation pressure by crabs (Carcinus aestuarii) and gobies (Knipowitchia caucasica). A temporary decline in total abundance in summer followed an increase in abundance of these predators. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) 相似文献

The Relationship between Phytoplankton Diversity and Community Function in a Coastal Lagoon 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The decrease of biodiversity related to the phenomena of global climate change is stimulating the scientific community towards
a better understanding of the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In ecosystems where marked biodiversity
changes occur at seasonal time scales, it is easier to relate them with ecosystem functioning. The objective of this work
is to analyse the relationship between phytoplankton diversity and primary production in St. André coastal lagoon – SW Portugal.
This lagoon is artificially opened to the sea every year in early spring, exhibiting a shift from a marine dominated to a
low salinity ecosystem in winter. Data on salinity, temperature, nutrients, phytoplankton species composition, chlorophyll
a (Chl a) concentration and primary production were analysed over a year. Modelling studies based on production-irradiance curves
were also conducted. A total of 19 taxa were identified among diatoms, dinoflagellates and euglenophyceans, the less abundant
group. Lowest diversities (Shannon–Wiener index) were observed just before the opening to the sea. Results show a negative
correlation (p<0.05) between diversity and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration (0.2–40.3 mg Chl a m−3). Higher Chl a values corresponded to periods when the community was dominated by the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum (>90% of cell abundance) and production was maximal (up to 234.8 mg C m−3 h−1). Maximal photosynthetic rates (Pmax) (2.0–22.5 mg C mg Chl a−1 h−1) were higher under lower Chl a concentrations. The results of this work suggest that decreases in diversity are associated with increases in biomass and
production, whereas increases correspond to opposite trends. It is suggested that these trends, contrary to those observed
in terrestrial and in some benthic ecosystems, may be a result of low habitat diversity in the water column and resulting
competitive pressure. The occurrence of the highest photosynthetic rates when Chl a is low, under some of the highest diversities, suggests a more efficient use of irradiance under low biomass–high diversity
conditions. Results suggest that this increased efficiency is not explained by potential reductions in nutrient limitation
and intraspecific competition under lower biomasses and may be a result of niche complementarity. 相似文献

Three burrow systems produced by Jaxea nocturna and one cluster of burrows produced by Upogebia pusilla where investigated in the Bay of Panzano, Northern Adriatic Sea, to determine preferred orientations. The distributions of dip directions differ between both producers. Steep shafts into the consolidated mud followed by large, shallowly inclined tunnels oriented in a manner similar to a spiral are characteristic for Jaxea nocturna burrows. In contrast, the Y-shaped burrows of Upogebia pusilla have entrance shafts that are less steep which are connected by a near-horizontal section, where a blind ending tunnel branches. Orientations of the dominating, shallowly inclined burrow parts are not randomly distributed in either Jaxea or in Upogebia burrows. Three preferred axial orientations with almost equal proportions in each direction are characteristic for the Jaxea burrow from the centre of the bay. This system transforms to a squared structure near the coast, where one direction parallels the shoreline and the other is oriented at right angles to the coast. The latter orientation demonstrates significant constancy in all investigated burrows. Upogebia burrow clusters coincide with the three preferred orientations of the Jaxea burrow from the bay centre, but the proportions of the directions are unequal. Burrow segments connecting the steep entrance shafts in Upogebia are oriented almost parallel to the shoreline, whereas at right angles to the coast the flat blind-ending tunnels incline towards the open sea. The study shows a strong coincidence between empirical and theoretical distributions of the dominating orientations in both species. 相似文献

The particulate organic carbon (POC), nitrogen (PN) and phosphorus (PP) vertical distribution along the water column and temporal variability in coastal and offshore waters of the Northern Adriatic Sea were related to the hydrodynamic conditions and biological processes. Fresh water inputs from the Po and Adige rivers enhance primary production, resulting in high POC, PN and PP concentrations at the surface. In offshore waters, POC and PN concentrations were about 3–4 times less than in the coastal waters, while PP were up to 10 times lower, highlighting a marked phosphorus depletion. In the bottom layer, the POC content decreases due to the strong density gradients which separate bottom waters with prevailing degradation processes. Short term 48 h-variability of POC, PN and PP in the coastal waters was determined to a great extent by variations in the spreading of river plumes at the surface and by nepheloid layers and resuspension processes in the bottom waters. The particulate matter in the Adriatic offshore waters is extremely depleted as regards particulate phosphorus and is characterised by Corg:P and N:P ratios higher than the Redfield ratio. 相似文献

The Adriatic Sea is a semi-enclosed ecosystem that receives in itsshallow part, the northern basin, significant freshwater
inputs whichmarkedly increase its productivity with respect to the oligotrophic featuresof the Mediterranean sea. In this
area, especially on the western coastwhere river plumes diffuse, high physical (density) and chemical (nutrients)gradients
occur on a small scale, both horizontal and vertical. Results ofbacterial production as 3H-thymidine incorporation, bacterialabundance as DAPI direct count, autotrophic biomass as chlorophyll a andtotal biomass
as ATP from three areas in the Northern Adriatic Sea arereported. The three sites, differently influenced by the river waterdiffusion,
were sampled seasonally over two days, every 24 h, in foursurveys from April 1995 to January 1996. Bacterioplankton production, strongly
correlated with primary production, was extremely high near thecoast in low-salinity, high-nutrient waters, mostly as an indirectconsequence
of riverine inputs causing an increase in phytoplanktonproduction stimulated by physically driven nutrient inputs. In the
warmmonths bacterial activity was higher than in cold months. While bacteriaabundance did not appear related to the salinity
gradients, bacterialproduction (from 0.6 to 372 pM 3H-thymidine h™1incorporated, corresponding to 0.01–8.2 μg C l™1h™1) and the relative generation times (from 0.2 to 35 days)showed a high range of values, representing a variety of situations,
fromestuaries to the ocean. The resulting role of the bacterial community in thecarbon cycle is very consistent, processing
amounts of carbon which havebeen estimated as high as the 80% and the 260% of thosesynthesized by autotrophs in summer and
winter, respectively.

Although the temporal and spatial variability of virioplankton in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea has been repeatedly explored suggesting that viruses constitute an extremely dynamic component of the plankton community and hypothesizing their importance in marine food webs and mucilage events, there is still no information about viral replication rates. Hence, the contribution of viruses to bacterial mortality and the cycling of organic matter in this part of the Adriatic basin are still not fully comprehended. Assessment of the role of viral lysis requires a robust means of estimating viral production. Since, up to now, none of the available methods evolved to a state of a standard yet, in this preliminary study 3 different experimental approaches were simultaneously assayed (viral production estimated by radiotracer incorporation method [TdR], dilution technique for the estimate of viral production in already infected bacteria [DIL] and serial dilution method in manipulated phage-host assemblage [SER]). The present study provided the first evidence of viral production rates in this study area, that resulted in comprising between ∼ 3.5-15 × 108 viruses L− 1 h− 1 and critically faced up the results obtained by different techniques with the consideration that they suffer from different biases. Based on TdR and DIL viral proliferation estimates, viral lysis was responsible for the loss of 54 to 95% of the bacterial standing stock, while the viral-induced mortality by SER (325% d− 1) was likely consistently overestimated. These results indicate that viral lysis is a significant factor for prokaryotic mortality suggesting its implication as an important pathway for the cycling of dissolved organic matter in the Gulf of Trieste. 相似文献

The relationship between the suctorian Ephelota gemmipara and the large hydroid Eudendrium racemosum from the North Adriatic Sea has been studied over its full annual cycle. Ephelota gemmipara settles on the perisarc of the hydroid, usually close to the hydranths in order to exploit the hydroid's food discharges. The life cycle of E. gemmipara is influenced by temperature variations and by its relationship with the host. The hydroid shows an active phase in the summer, and it gets through the adverse winter season forming resting stages. In April, when temperature increases, the hydroid starts its active phase and it is colonized by suctorians. From May to September the suctorians produce multiple buds (swarmers) that detach from the parental cells to settle on an Eudendrium colony. The abundance of the suctorian peaks in September, with more than 1.2 million ind. m?2. Their proliferation coincides with the maximal abundance of their host and the highest water temperatures. On the contrary, sexual reproduction and the encystment occur when the temperature and the abundance of E. racemosum decrease. Lastly, we also report the presence of symbionts such as bacteria and the parasitic protozoans Tachyblaston ephelotensis and Enigmocoma acinetarum. 相似文献

The species composition and spatial and trophic structures of the macrobenthos communities of the Ermolinskaya Bay were studied, and the main changes that had occurred since previous explorations (the 1960s) were analyzed. The most significant changes in the spatial structure of the macrobenthos community (species diversity, population density and biomass, and similarities of the species’ distribution) were observed with regard to the sea level zone: the most pronounced at the upper littoral, followed by the middle littoral, lower littoral, and sublittoral. The longitudinal gradient of the community structure (from the innermost area seaward) was pronounced less strongly. Altogether, four macrobenthos communities can be identified in Ermolinskaya Bay; they differ in species composition, diversity, population density and biomass, and trophic structure: (1) community of the upper littoral with the dominance of collecting deposit feeders, Hydrobia ulvae, and scrapers, Littorina saxatilis; (2) community of the middle littoral with the prevalence of deposit feeders, Hydrobia ulvae and Macoma balthica, seston feeders, Mya arenaria, and, to a lesser extent, Mytilus edulis; (3) community of the lower littoral with the domination of the filtering organisms, Mytilus edulis, to a lesser extent collecting deposit feeders, Hydrobia ulvae and Macoma balthica, and scrapers, Littorina littorea; and (4) community of the sublittoral, where the leading positions belong to the group of collecting deposit feeders, Macoma balthica, to a lesser extent also Hydrobia ulvae (in the innermost area) and Capitella capitata, Arenicola marina (in the marine part of the bay). The gradual siltation of the bay and the reduction of its connection to the sea have led to the development of a littoral complex of species in the sublittoral, whereas the species typical at the sublittoral in the 1960s are now mainly found at the outlet of the bay. 相似文献

Monthly samples of the macrobenthic fauna were collected during February 1983-February 1984, in a coastal lagoon of Evros Delta (North Aegean Sea), characterized by a very strong monthly fluctuation of temperature and salinity. 3 groups of samples were distinguished, the first including those taken during the spring months, the second, those taken during summer and autumn, and the third, the samples of winter months. All the above samples were homogeneous concerning number of species, species richness (Margálef index) and evenness, but not as far as species diversity (Shannon-Wiener index) is concerned. The monthly variation of the total number of individuals and total biomass was significant, with highest values in spring, beginning of summer and autumn. Most months, polychaetes dominating, having the highest relative abundance and wet biomass. The 8 dominating species, which had a cumulative dominance of about 93%, showed strong monthly variation of abundance and biomass. 相似文献

Abstract During research directed towards the employment of the biological resources of the North Adriatic lagoons, from January 1991 to December 1992, in both tidal phases, a survey was carried out on the phytoplankton and the chemico-physical parameters of the Scardovari lagoon. Data analyses allowed two different areas to be distinguished: one inner, which was generally characterized by high phytoplanktonic densities (St. 3–4), the other outer, which was more influced by marine load (St. 1–2). Photosynthetic picoplankton was dominant in terms of cell number in most samples. Phytoplanktonic fraction >2 μm was represented mainly by diatoms, which showed the higher species number. During the sample observation, some dinoflagellates, considered toxic or potentially toxic, were found. Their presence was important because of their effect on the bivalve mollusc cultures. 相似文献

A chub of previously ambiguous identity from the Boljunscica and Pazincica rivers (south-eastern Istra Peninsula) was studied and compared with geographically close Squalius squalus, Squalius zrmanja, and Squalius janae recently described from the Dragonja River drainage in the Adriatic Sea basin in Slovenia. It was shown that the chub from the south-eastern Istra Peninsula differs from all know species of Squalius but one: Squalius janae. Three samples examined from Boljunscica and Pazincica rivers and Squalius janae from its type locality, Dragonja River, show the following characters typical for the latter species: a long head (the head length 27–32% SL); a pointed conical snout with a clearly projecting upper jaw; a long straight mouth cleft, the lower jaw length (39–45% HL) exceeding the caudal peduncle depth; a large eye; commonly 9? branched anal-fin rays; commonly 44 total vertebrae (24+20 or 25+19); bright silvery colouration, scales easily lost; iris, pectoral, pelvic and anal fin pigmentation with yellow shades. The data on the distribution of Squalius chubs in the northern Adriatic basin support the assumption that the range of Squalius janae is determined by the geology of the Trieste Flysch Basin and the Pazin Flysch Basin forming the base of the Istra Peninsula. The distribution pattern of this species does not support a simple model of fish dispersal and a complete connectivity within the whole Palaeo-Po historical drainage. Indeed, it indicates a disrupted surface palaeohydrography that was heavily fragmented by karstification in the whole Dinaric area. 相似文献

Nutrient benthic fluxes, as well as sediment phosphorus concentration at the open sea and coastal water stations of the Central and South Adriatic were studied during 1997–98. The fluxes were in the ranges: 0.16–2.67 mmol m–2 d–1 (silicate); –0.031–0.164 mmol m–2 d–1 (phosphate); –0.51–2.03 mmol m–2 d–1 (ammonia); and –1.32–1.62 mmol m–2 d–1 (nitrate + nitrite). Silicate flux showed a gradient from the coastal area to the open sea. Ammonia was the main nitrogen species in the flux at the estuary and bay stations, while the sum of nitrate and nitrite was predominant at the open sea stations. Relationships between phosphate and ammonia fluxes (r = 0.699, p<0.01) as well as phosphate and silicate (r = 0.529, p<0.01) were established. 相似文献

Littoral cartography is a valuable tool which uses shallow water macroalgal communities for monitoring ecosystem health and water quality. Cartography of littoral rocky-shore communities (CARLIT) is a European Union Water Framework Directive-compliant monitoring method widely used in the Western Mediterranean Sea. This non-destructive method is based on a visual observation of the type and length of coast occupied by rocky-shore communities in the upper-sublittoral zone. Here we present the first wide-scale application of CARLIT in the Adriatic Sea. The reference values calculated specifically for the Croatian coast (Eastern Adriatic Sea) ensure accurate calculation of the ecological status. The measured ecological quality ratio values (EQR) show a good linear relation with the Land Uses Simplified Index (LUSI) and appropriately reflect an increase in nutrient concentrations. The results suggest that this method can be used as a reliable biomonitoring tool in the Eastern Adriatic Sea. This study highlighted that Cystoseira forests thrive in 39% of the surveyed coastline and 23% of the coastline seems to be subjected to overgrazing by sea urchins. Our results provide a spatially accurate information on the abundance of different upper-sublittoral communities and the associated ecological status, which can be used in future management plans for improving water quality. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the community structure of deep sea fishes in the northern Gulf of Aqaba. Deep fish traps, short lines and long lines were deployed at depth ranges from 60 to 700 m between June 2014 and May 2015. A total of 369 fish individuals belonging to 37 species in 21 families were collected. The most abundant family observed in deep fish traps and short line was the commercially important family Sparidae, whereas the most abundant family in long line catch was the commercially unimportant fish family Muraenidae. The most abundant fish species sampled by deep fish traps and shortline was Blueskin Seabream, Polysteganus coeruleopunctatus. The most abundant species in long line catch White-spotted Moray, Gymnothorax johnsoni. In fish traps and with short line, the most commonly caught species was Blueskin Seabream. White-spotted Moray was the most common long line catch. Depth distribution for 37 deep fish species and GIS maps for the two main commercial fish species Blueskin Seabream and Bigeye Hound Shark, Iago omanensis were documented. 相似文献

The population dynamics of Pseudo-nitzschia in relation to environmental factors was investigated from March 2002 to July 2008 in Lim Bay, in the north-eastern Adriatic Sea. Domoic acid was monitored in the breeding population of Mytilus galloprovincialis from 2005 to 2008. The principal-component analysis of environmental parameters showed that the system is mostly temperature driven. The phytoplankton community was mainly composed of diatoms. Pseudo-nitzschia was the dominant diatom, present in 60% of samples, with a maximum (1.6 × 106 cells L−1) contribution up to 97% of the total diatom abundance. Morphological analysis revealed Pseudo-nitzschia manii and potentially toxic Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Pseudo-nitzschia fraudulenta and Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha as the dominant species in blooms. Pseudo-nitzschia abundance positively correlated to temperature, phosphate and ammonia in accordance with its maximal abundance in the summer/autumn period when fish farms had a maximum impact on the environment. Domoic acid was detected in M. galloprovincialis in concentrations below regulatory limits, ranging from 0.097 to 0.8721 μg g−1 in five cases from April to October 2005 in Lim Bay, but so far it is not clear which of the species was responsible for DA production. This study is also the first record of P. manii, P pungens and P. fraudulenta species in the Adriatic Sea. 相似文献
