Abstract This study aims to investigate the genetic variability of olfactory responses to odours from the host habitat, involved in host selection by insect parasitoids. The probing response of females to fruit and non-fruit odours was studied in Leptopilina boulardi Barbotin et al . (Hymenoptera, Figitidae), a parasitoid of the frugivorous Drosophila melanogaster larvae. Responses of two strains (from Nasrallah, Tunisia, and from Brazzaville, Congo) and their hybrids were compared. Probing is a searching mode by repeated ovipositor insertions into the breeding substrate to locate digging larvae. Most Brazzaville females exhibited innate ovipositor probing into agar in response to the fruit aromas (banana, orange, pear, prickly pear), whereas this was rare in the Nasrallah strain. These four fruits are all breeding sites for D. melanogaster, whereas mushroom is not. Mushroom odour did not trigger any probing response in either strain. In addition, the latency of the probing response was shorter in Brazzaville females. Results from hybrid females (F1 and Backcross) showed that both probability to probe in response to a fruit aroma and latency of the response were strongly heritable. Regarding the probability to probe, there was an apparent complete dominance of Nasrallah characteristics, whereas additive inheritance was found in the Brazzaville lineage. The contrast between reciprocal F1 hybrids suggested a strong interaction with non-chromosomal factors. It is suggested that a cytoplasmic factor in the Nasrallah strain decreases females' propensity to probe in response to significant odours. The latency of probing appeared to be under a chromosomal influence. Thus, this study identifies a strong genetic component in the responses to odours from the host habitat. It also provides information on the genetic basis of the two characters studied.  相似文献

The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) is a large gene family that is found in most vertebrates and has an important influence on body odour preference and mate selection in animals. In this research we found, that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) phenotype is strongly connected with the strength and pleasantness of perceived odour of selected chemical compounds found in sweat. Among different chemical classes of compounds tested, the esters of fatty acids such as methyl undecanoate, methyl decanoate, methyl nonanoate, methyl octanoate and methyl hexanoate show strongest connection to HLA. On the other hand, our experiment did not confirm the connection of MHC to the perceived strength and pleasantness of body odour.  相似文献

How animals adjust their foraging or mate finding behaviour according to the risk of predation has received much attention recently. However, few studies have focused on the behaviour of prey when stimuli representing different adaptive behaviours originate from different sensory modalities. Here we present data on how male moths trade off odour-mediated mate attraction and auditory-mediated predator avoidance depending on the relative quality of the mate signal. Males of Agrotis segetum (Noctuidae) and Plodia interpunctella (Pyralidae), orienting towards a sex pheromone source in a flight tunnel, were exposed to ultrasound mimicking the echolocation calls of a bat, i.e. high predation risk. Males of both species accepted the predation risk when attracted to pheromone sources of high quality (female gland extract or complete synthetic blend at high dose), manifested in similar percentages reaching the pheromone source in moths with and without ultrasound exposure. In contrast, a lower proportion of ultrasound-exposed males than unexposed ones located the pheromone source when moths were flying towards pheromone sources of low quality (incomplete synthetic blend or complete synthetic blend at low dose), due to more time invested in defence manoeuvres. Furthermore, the risk taking behaviours of these moth species seem to be similar in spite of the fact that their ultrasonic hearing systems have evolved independently.  相似文献

Insect perception of ambient ultraviolet-B radiation   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Solar ultraviolet‐B radiation (UV‐B, 290–315 nm) has a strong influence on the interactions between plants and animal consumers. Field studies in various ecosystems have shown that the intensity of insect herbivory increases when the UV‐B spectral band of solar radiation is experimentally attenuated using filters. This effect of UV‐B on insect herbivory has been attributed to UV‐B‐induced changes in the characteristics of plant tissues, and to direct damaging effects of UV‐B photons on the animals. We tested for effects of UV‐B radiation on insect behaviour using field experiments with the thrips Caliothrips phaseoli. When placed in a ‘choice’ tunnel under natural daylight, these insects showed a clear preference for low‐UV‐B environments, and this preference could not be accounted for by differences between environments in total irradiance. These results provide the first evidence of ambient UV‐B photoperception in an insect, challenging the idea that animals are unable to detect variations in the narrow UV‐B component of solar radiation.  相似文献

The perception of the intensity of components of odorous mixturesis related to the overall mixture intensity in a complex mannerwhich has not so far been adequately modelled. Hypoadditivity,where the total perceived intensity of a mixture is less thanthe sum of the component intensities which arise when the substancesare presented in pure form at equivalent chemical concentrations,has been known for many years. An experiment on series of 56mixtures of amyl butyrate and bergamot at supra-threshold concentrationsfound that the total qualitatively unspecified intensity ofsuch mixtures can be greater than the sum of the identifiedcomponent intensities as judged in the context of the mixture.To reconcile an apparent contradiction, and to bring into onepsychophysical framework results from diverse procedures, amodel of mixed qualitative and aqualitative odour intensityis advanced, incorporating some evidence on the difference betweendetection and recognition processes. Each component in a mixturemay, in this theory, both partially mask the qualitative intensityof the other, and simultaneously convert some part of the other'sintensity into an aqualitative form.  相似文献

Time perception is critical to animal behaviours requiring anticipation of future events based on present information about the environment. Most models of animal foraging assume that animals are capable of measuring absolute time despite evidence that animals measure time with predictable biases in mean and variance. We incorporate the evidence for a rate-biased subjective time perception into a classic model of optimal foraging, the marginal value theorem. If acceleration of the clock rate is proportional to food intake rate and time is perceived similarly when in transit between patches as it is while waiting in a patch following eating, organisms are predicted to follow the predictions of the marginal value theorem exactly. However, a nonlinear relationship between clock rate and food intake rate, unequal wait and transit time perception, or any lag in the clock predicts characteristic suboptimal behaviour. We discuss how this mechanism for suboptimal behaviour compares with others in the literature and how it can be recognized in experiments. Chemical communication is widespread among plethodontid salamanders (Caudata: Plethodontidae), but little information exists on the role of odours in interspecific competition in general and among species in western North America in particular. The present study examined the potential of faecal odours for intra- and interspecific communication among sympatric plethodontids in two-choice tests in the laboratory. In experiment 1, Plethodon vehiculum and Aneides ferrus from Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada, were presented with two burrows marked with (1) a faecal pellet of male P. vehiculum versus a control clay pellet, and (2) a faecal pellet of male A. ferreus versus a control pellet. In experiment 2, responses of P. vehiculum, P. dunni and P. vandykei from Washington, U.S.A., were tested towards faecal pellets of conspecific males and females, and towards pellets of congeneric males. Both P. vehiculum and P. dunni distinguished odours of conspecific males and females, based on their behavioural responses towards faecal and control pellets. Only P. dunni, however, avoided burrows marked with faeces of conspecific individuals. In contrast, neither A. ferreus nor P. vandykei appeared to distinguish faecal odours of conspecific salamanders from control pellets. In tests with odours of heterospecific individuals, P. dunni and P. vehiculum distinguished odours of each other, and P. vandykei distinguished odours of P. vehiculum. The data from these two experiments suggest that P. dunni use faecal pellets as territorial markers both in intraspecific communication and in interspecific encounters with P. vehiculum.  相似文献

2-Methoxy-3-alkylpyrazines have been identified as odour components in Danaus plexippus, Zygaena lonicerae and an Australian Amata species, by means of coupled gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, with selected ion monitoring. Wide variability in pyrazine content was observed with D. plexippus and this was correlated with similar variability in the larval food-plants, Asclepias spp., which are presumed to be the odour sources for this butterfly. The importance of pyrazines in the biology of aposematic insects and their role as ingredients of a generalized warning system are discussed.  相似文献

Recognition systems play a key role in a range of biological processes, including mate choice, immune defence and altruistic behaviour. Social insects provide an excellent model for studying recognition systems because workers need to discriminate between nestmates and non-nestmates, enabling them to direct altruistic behaviour towards closer kin and to repel potential invaders. However, the level of aggression directed towards conspecific intruders can vary enormously, even among workers within the same colony. This is usually attributed to differences in the aggression thresholds of individuals or to workers having different roles within the colony. Recent evidence from the weaver ant Oecophylla smaragdina suggests that this does not tell the whole story. Here I propose a new model for nestmate recognition based on a vector template derived from both the individual’s innate odour and the shared colony odour. This model accounts for the recent findings concerning weaver ants, and also provides an alternative explanation for why the level of aggression expressed by a colony decreases as the diversity within the colony increases, even when odour is well-mixed. The model makes additional predictions that are easily tested, and represents a significant advance in our conceptualisation of recognition systems.  相似文献

1.?Although a growing body of evidence supports that olfaction based on chemical compounds emitted by birds may play a role in individual recognition, the possible role of chemical cues in sexual selection of birds has been only preliminarily studied. 2.?We investigated for the first time whether a passerine bird, the spotless starling Sturnus unicolor, was able to discriminate the sex of conspecifics by using olfactory cues and whether the size and secretion composition of the uropygial gland convey information on sex, age and reproductive status in this species. 3.?We performed a blind choice experiment during mating, and we found that starlings were able to discriminate the sex of conspecifics by using chemical cues alone. Both male and female starlings preferred male scents. Furthermore, the analysis of the chemical composition of the uropygial gland secretion by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed differences between sexes, ages and reproductive status. 4.?In conclusion, our study reveals for first time that a passerine species can discriminate the sex of conspecifics by relying on chemical cues and suggests that the uropygial gland secretion may potentially function as a chemical signal used in mate choice and/or intrasexual competition in this species.  相似文献
