In a two-year-study, the fish community of the Loosdrecht Lakes area was characterized with regard to the professional fishery and the forage base. The lakes are shallow (mean depth 2 m) and eutrophic to hypertrophic. The bream,Abramis brama, dominates the fish biomass. The pikeperch,Stizostedion lucioperca, is the main predator.Bream up to 30 cm have a slow growth rate and are in a bad condition. A faster growth rate and a better condition are shown by bream of 30 cm and more. The small bream feeds on chironomid larvae, benthic cladocerans and zooplankton. The better condition of bream over 30 cm is explained by the more efficient feeding of larger bream onChironomus plumosus larvae. Pikeperch show a fast growth rate and a good condition. Recruitment is limited by the low densities of smelt,Osmerus eperlanus, leaving cannibalism as the most important way for the 0+ pikeperch to become piscivorous and to manifest a fast growth.The impact of the professional gillnet fishery on bream and pikeperch is small because the mesh sizes in use are as large as 75–100 mm bar mesh.The planktivorous 0+ pikeperch consumes mainly the carnivorous zooplanktersLeptodora kindtii and cyclopoids. The zooplankton community lacks large herbivorous species likeDaphnia hyalina, capable of consuming bluegreens. We used two analyses to test the hypothesis that planktivore abundances contribute to the residual variations of Secchi depth
or chlorophyll-a plotted with respect to mean summer epilimnetic total phosphorus. The first analysis involved 15 lake years of data from
six lakes. The data set comprised mark-recapture assessments of piscivore and planktivore numbers and estimates of mean summer
chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus and Secchi depth. We found that residual chlorophyll-a variation was not significantly (p>0.05) correlated with planktivore densities, but that planktivore densities did contribute (p<0.02) to the residual variation of Secchi depth on mean total phosphorus. The second analysis included all of the data used
in the first plus an additional 13 lake years of data from the literature. These data showed that the percentage of the total
fish community comprising planktivores did not significantly (p>0.05) contribute to the residual variation in chlorophyll-a with respect to mean summer total phosphorus. Together, our results suggest that planktivore abundance has a significant

1. We conducted enclosure experiments in a shallow eutrophic lake, in which a biomass gradient of the filter-feeding planktivore, silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix Valenciennes, was created, and subsequent community changes in both zooplankton and phytoplankton were examined.
2. During a summer experiment, a bloom of Anabaena flos-aquae developed (≈ 8000 cells mL−1 ) solely in an enclosure without silver carp. Concurrent with, or slightly preceding the Anabaena bloom, the number of rotifer species and their abundance increased from seven to twelve species (1700–14 400 organisms L−1 ) after the bloom in this fish-free enclosure. Protozoans and bacteria were generally insensitive to the gradient of silver carp biomass.
3. During an autumn experiment, on the other hand, large herbivorous crustaceans were more efficient than silver carp in suppressing the algae, partly because the lower water temperature (≈ 24 °C) inhibited active feeding of this warm-water fish and also formation of algal colonies. Heterotrophic nanoflagellate and bacterial densities were also influenced negatively by the crustaceans.
4. Correspondence analysis (CA) was applied to the weekly community data of zooplankton and phytoplankton. L Lake, a reactor cooling reservoir in South Carolina, USA was managed after filling to promote the development of healthy ecological communities similar to those in mature regional cooling reservoirs. Two types of biomanipulation were undertaken to achieve this goal, the introduction of typical southeastern US reservoir fishes (bluegill and largemouth bass) and artificial planting of native aquatic macrophytes. Fish assemblages were monitored by electrofishing from reservoir filling in 1986 until 1998. Multivariate analysis divided the fish samples into five sequential periods resulting from species replacements and additions. Small species that colonized L Lake from a feeder stream predominated in the first period but were mostly eliminated, as bluegill, largemouth bass, and other lentic species increased in the second period. A rapid increase in threadfin shad abundance characterized the third period, and small littoral zone and phytophilous fishes increased during the fourth and fifth periods coincident with the proliferation of aquatic macrophytes. Analysis of Bray-Curtis similarities and the species accumulation rate indicated that the rate of fish community change decreased with time and that fish community structure changed little during the last several years of the study. By the end of the study, community structure was similar to that in a nearby cooling reservoir that supported diverse and resilient biota. Biomanipulation contributed to the rapid establishment of lentic species and later increases in small littoral and phytophilous species suggesting that biomanipulation may be useful in accelerating fish community development in new cooling reservoirs. 相似文献

SUMMARYY 1. A total of 2.7 × 106 walleye fingerlings and 1.7 × 105 northern pike fingerlings were stocked during 1987–99 in eutrophic Lake Mendota. The objectives of the biomanipulation were to improve sport fishing and to increase piscivory to levels that would reduce planktivore biomass, increase Daphnia grazing and ultimately reduce algal densities in the lake. The combined biomass of the two piscivore species in the lake increased rapidly from < 1 kg ha?1 and stabilised at 4–6 kg ha?1 throughout the evaluation period. 2. Restrictive harvest regulations (i.e. increase in minimum size limit and reduction in bag limit) were implemented in 1988 to protect the stocked piscivores. Further restrictions were added in 1991 and 1996 for walleye and northern pike, respectively. These restrictions were essential because fishing pressure on both species (especially walleye) increased dramatically during biomanipulation. 3. Commencing in 1987 with a massive natural die‐off of cisco and declining yellow perch populations, total planktivore biomass dropped from about 300–600 kg ha?1 prior to the die‐off and the fish stocking, to about 20–40 kg ha?1 in subsequent years. These low planktivore biomasses lasted until a resurgence in the perch population in 1999. 4. During the period prior to biomanipulation when cisco were very abundant, the dominant Daphnia species was the smaller‐bodied D. galeata mendotae, which usually reached a biomass maximum in June and then crashed shortly thereafter. Beginning in 1988, the larger‐bodied D. pulicaria dominated, with relatively high biomasses occurring earlier in the spring and lasting well past mid‐summer of many years. 5. In many years dominated by D. pulicaria, Secchi disc readings were greater during the spring and summer months when compared with years dominated by D. galeata mendotae. During the biomanipulation evaluation period, phosphorus (P) levels also changed dramatically thus complicating our analysis. Earlier research on Lake Mendota had shown that Daphnia grazing increased summer Secchi disc readings, but P concentrations linked to agricultural and urban runoff and to climate‐controlled internal mixing processes were also important factors affecting summer readings. 6. The Lake Mendota biomanipulation project has been a success given that high densities of the large‐bodied D. pulicaria have continued to dominate for over a decade, and the diversity of fishing opportunities have improved for walleye, northern pike and, more recently, yellow perch. 7. Massive stocking coupled with very restrictive fishing regulations produced moderate increases in piscivore densities. Larger increases could be realised by more drastic restrictions on sport fishing, but these regulations would be very controversial to anglers. 8. If the lake's food web remains in a favourable biomanipulation state (i.e. high herbivory), further improvements in water clarity are possible with future reductions in P loadings from a recently initiated non‐point pollution abatement programme in the lake's drainage basin. 相似文献

The biomanipulation study in Lake Zwemlust (area 1.5 ha; mean depth 1.5 m) is among the series of such investigations initiated recently in The Netherlands. The effects of the lake's reffilling (after it was first completely drained empty) almost entirely the nutrient-rich seepage water from the River Vecht flowing nearby and of removal of the planktivorous bream (Abramis brama), on zooplankton community structure and feeding activities of crustaceans were monitored for two successive years (1987, 1988). In these years a classical pattern of succession occurred, with the rotifer spring maximum preceding the crustacean maximum by about 3 weeks. Among the fiveDaphnia species, which appeared in quick succession during May–July, two were large-bodied forms (D. magna; D. pulex). OnlyD. pulex persisted and was the important grazer species in the second year, especially in spring. In the first year the crustacean grazing, with several values >100%.d–1, contributed significantly to the lake's improved water clarity, with Secchi-disc transparencies of 1.5 m and more almost throughout the summer, compared with 0.3 m before the biomanipulation. Even though the water clarity climate in the second year was quite similar to that in the first, the causal factor was high macrophytic vegetation, rather than zooplankton grazing. The lake developed a rich littoral flora and fauna in the second year in response to the optimal light and nutrient conditions. Apparently, the predation by the introduced planktivorous rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) on zooplankton was an important factor in the changes in zooplankton structure, and in the reduced role of zooplankton in seston elimination during the second year. There is some evidence from bioassay work that, simultaneously with the littoral development, nitrogen limitation of the phytoplankton also contributed to the improved light situation in the second year. 相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Piscivore stocking at artificially high densities and fishing are the two common approaches to reduce the amount of planktivorous and benthivorous fish in lake biomanipulation programmes. Both measures have advantages and disadvantages, but their relative efficacy has not previously been directly compared.
2. We calculated the average annual catch of roach and bream in a lake undergoing long-term biomanipulation (Feldberger Haussee, Germany) by seining each year between 1992 and 1998. We compared this value with a bioenergetics estimate of annual consumption rates of the dominant cohorts of piscivores, pikeperch and pike, in 1997 and 1998. We also determined species composition and length distribution of prey fish in stomachs of the piscivores.
3. Roach was the dominant prey species of both pikeperch and pike, whereas bream was rarely taken by either piscivorous species. Seining removed on average larger specimens of roach than were found in the stomachs of the piscivores.
4. Based on stocking densities of the piscivores, published mortality rates, and individual consumption rates, feeding of pikeperch and pike on roach exceeded the manual removal of roach by seining by a factor of 4–15 (biomass) in 1997 and 1998.
5. Based on these results, a combination of fishing and piscivore enhancement is recommended. Whereas the stocks of adult roach and bream have to be reduced mainly by fishing, the predation of piscivores should be directed predominantly towards the juvenile zooplanktivorous fish. Stocking silver carp, a phytoplankton feeder, and bighead carp, an omnivorous plankton feeder, into an eutrophic lake at high
densities caused a dramatic change in the lake ecosystem.Microcystis, which had been dominant in summer and a main food of the fishes decreased markedly, and green algae smaller than 10 μm then
became dominant. Consequently, chlorophyll-a per unit area decreased slightly, while the rate of production was higher than that in the previous years. As the total density
of the fishes increased (from 0.09 to 0.11 fish m−2), the growth of silver carp was retarded, while that of bighead carp increased.Microcystis, was unable to become dominant due to increased grazing pressure by the fishes, and small green algae became dominant. The
lake conditions thus became more favourable for zooplankters which selectively consumed small green algae, and accordingly,
the production of zooplankton rose. Bighead carp consumed more animal food, which they assimilate at a higher rate than plant
food, and grew better in spite of the fact that the fish density increased. The feeding rate of silver carp was greatly reduced
because the green algae were too small to ingest, and the fish therefore grew poorly. Results of a computer simulation of
a model consisting of five compartments, representing the blue-green algae, green algae, zooplankton, silver and bighead carp,

We examined the impacts of three facultative planktivorous fishes, Congo tilapia (Tilapia rendalli), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), and an obligate planktivorous fish, silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) on plankton community and water quality of a tropical eutrophic reservoir, Paranoá Reservoir, Brasília, Brazil, conducting
both laboratory selective grazing experiments and an enclosure experiment. The first two species inhabit this reservoir and
the remaining two are recommended for introduction. The field experiment was performed in ten limnocorrals (2 m3 each) and lasted five weeks. During the enclosure experiment, silver carp suppressed copepod nauplii, cladocerans and rotifers
while the presence of tilapia and bluegill were associated with increased rotifers density. The dominant blue-green algae,Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (98% of phytoplankton biomass) was enhanced in the presence of bluegill, tilapia and tambaqui, but reduced in the presence
of silver carp. This impact on plankton is in agreement with the results of the laboratory feeding trials. The observed alterations
in water quality parameters in fish limnocorrals are discussed in relation to plankton community and eutrophication of this

In September 1987 the shallow, eutrophic, Lake Mosvatn was treated with rotenone to eliminate planktivorous fish (mainly whitefish,Coregonus lavaretus, L.), and the effects were studied. The first summer after treatment the zooplankton community changed markedly from rotifer
dominance and few grazers, to a community with few rotifers and many grazers. Accordingly there was a fivefold increase in
the biomass ofDaphnia galeata. Adult females ofD. galeata approximately doubled in weight. The decrease in rotifer biomass was probably mainly due to a loss of food by competition
with the daphnids. The phytoplankton community was also markedly affected. Prior to treatment Secchi depth was 1.7 m and Chl-a 23μg l−1 in the summer. After treatment there was an increase in the proportion of small and gelatinous algae and the mean chlorophyll
concentration fell to 7μg Chl-a l−1. Secchi depth increased to>2.3 m (bottom-sight most of the season). After the treatment there were also fewer cyanobacterial
blooms. This seems to be related to oligotrophication caused indirectly by increased grazing by the zooplankton. Total nutrient
concentrations were affected. Prior to treatment the mean summer concentration of total phosphate was 44μg P l−1. This decreased to 29μg P l−1 in the first summer and 23μg P l−1 the second summer after the treatment. Total nitrogen decreased from 0.68 mg N l−1 before treatment to 0.32 mg N l−1 the first summer after the treatment. The phosphate loading was not reduced, therefor it can be concluded that the fish removal

Biomass and production of plankton communities were investigated in two Chinese integrated fish culture ponds in August, Dianshanhu Pond (with high density of planktivorous carp) and Pingwang Pond (with low density of planktivorous carp). The plankton communities were composed of rotifers, protozoans, phytoplankton (<40 µm) and bacteria. The large phytoplankton (>40 µm), cladocerans and copepods were rare because of grazing pressure by the carp. The density or biomass of bacteria (1.93 × 107 and 2.20 × 107 cells ml–1 on average in Dianshanhu and Pingwang Ponds, respectively), picophytoplankton (24.6 and 18.5 mg m–3 Chla on average) and rotifers (5372 and 20733 ind. 1–1 on average) exceeded the maximum values reported for natural waters.The average [3H]thymidine uptake rates were 694 and 904 pmoles 1–1 h–1 (13.4 and 20.6 µgC 1–1) and the bacterial production by the >2 µm fraction amounted 21–28% of total [3H] thymidine uptake rate in both ponds. The mean chlorophylla concentrations were 59.1 and 183 mg m–3 in Dianshanhu and Pingwang Ponds, respectively. 82.4% and 65.3% of the total Chla was contributed by the <10 µm nano- and picophytoplankton in each pond, respectively. In particular, the picophytoplankton contribution amounted 41.2% of thtal Chla in Dianshanhu Pond. Primary production was 2.5 and 3.4 gC m–2 d–1 in each pond, respectively, and >50% of production was contributed by picophytoplankton. The mean biomasses of protozoa were 168 µg 1–1 and 445 µg 1–1 and those of rotifers were 763 µg 1–1 and 1186 µg 1–1 in Dianshanhu and Pingwang Ponds, respectively. The ecological efficiencies expressed in terms of the ratios of primary production to zooplankton production were 0.22 and 0.31, for the two ponds. 相似文献

In a four year experiment (1988–1991) carried out in a shallow, eutrophic lake, an increase in young-of-the-year pike (Esox lucius) density was used to control planktivorous fish assemblages consisting mainly of small-sized cyprinids: roach (Rutilus rutilus), Leucaspius delineatus, and white bream (Blicca bjoerkna). Stocking with pike fry of ca 30 mm in three successive springs resulted in large-scale mortality among prey of vulnerable sizes. Rotenone treatment at the end of the fourth year showed that roach and white bream populations contained few 0+ to 2+ fish, but very high numbers of 3+ to 6+ fish. By this time, short-lived, slow-growing L. delineatus, with no size refuge from predators, had been driven almost to extinction. 相似文献

The effects of exposure to high light intensities on blue-green algal (cyanobacterial) populations were examined in Lake Mendota, Wis. The algal populations were shown to be susceptible to inhibition of photosynthetic activity and pigment bleaching as a result of exposure. These effects generally influence only a small percentage of the lake population and thus are probably not important in causing major declines in chlorophyll a. Lytic organisms were shown to increase in numbers in the lake in response to the seasonal development of blue-green algae, reaching values of greater than 1,000 plaque-forming units per ml in midsummer. Both bacteria and protozoa were observed in plaque zones, but it could not be determined whether these lytic organisms had a major role in algal biomass declines. 相似文献

In Feldberg Haussee, an anthropogenic eutrophicated lake, biomanipulation was executed for restoration. To increase the biomass of crustaceans, fish grazing on zooplankton was reduced by catching small fishes and introducing pike-perch. After biomanipulation rotifer biomass from a wide range of species decreased to a small spring maximum with three dominant species. 2005年对太湖梅梁湾大型鲢、鳙控藻围栏内外浮游甲壳动物群落结构的季节变化进行了监测.结果表明:围栏内外的环境因子、浮游植物生物量、浮游甲壳动物种类组成无显著差异.但鲢、鳙放养对浮游甲壳动物的生物量产生了较大的影响,围栏内浮游甲壳动物的总生物量和枝角类的生物量显著低于围栏外.总体上,枝角类各种类的生物量受鲢、鳙放养的影响程度大于桡足类的种类.太湖梅梁湾浮游甲壳动物的季节演替明显,大部分种类只是季节性出现.冬季和春季以溞(Daphnia sp.)和近邻剑水蚤(Cyclops vicnus)等大型种类为主,夏季和秋季以象鼻溞(Bosmina sp.)、角突网纹溞(Ceriodaphnia cornuta)和中华窄腹剑水蚤(Limnoithona sinensis)等小型种类为主.典范对应分析表明,透明度、温度和浮游植物的生物量是影响浮游甲壳动物季节变化的主要因素. 相似文献

Nutrient loading in lakes is recognized as a serious threat to water quality. Over 25 years of raw sewage effluent discharge shifted Lake Eymir from a state dominated by submerged plants to a turbid water state. Successful effluent diversion undertaken in 1995 achieved 88% and 95% reductions in the areal loading of total phosphorus (TP) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), respectively. Furthermore, the reduced load of TP was very close to the suggested threshold areal load (0.6 g m–2 yr–1) to attain recovery. Even though diversion also reduced the in-lake TP level by half, the poor water clarity and low submerged plant coverage (112 ± 43 cm and 2.5% coverage of the lake total surface area, respectively) persisted. Domination of the fish stock by planktivorous tench (Tinca tinca L.) and the benthivorous common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) (66 ± 0.7 and 31 ± 1 kg CPUE, respectively) appeared to perpetuate the poor water condition. A substantial fish removal effort over 1 year achieved a 57% reduction in the fish stock which led to a 2.5-fold increase in Secchi disk transparency. This increase occurred largely because of a 4.5-fold decrease in the inorganic suspended solid concentration, and to some extent, a decrease in chlorophyll-a concentration. A strong top-down effect of fish on the large-sized grazers was evident as density and the body size of Daphnia pulexde Geer increased significantly after the fish removal. Even though the spring and annual euphotic depths occurred well above the maximum and mean depths of the lake, respectively, re-development of submerged plants was poor (6.2% coverage). A weak re-establishment of submerged plants might be attributed to an insufficiently viable seed bank, inappropriate chemical conditions of the sediment (severe oxygen deficiency), or to the high coot (Fulica atra L.) density. However, the top-down effect of fish appeared to be of great importance in determining water clarity, and in turn, conditions for submerged plant development in a warm temperate lake as recorded in the north temperate lakes. Furthermore, this study provides evidence for the importance of top-down control of fish, which, in turn, can be effectively utilised as a restoration strategy in warm-temperate lakes as well. More applications, along with long monitoring programs, are needed to develop a better understanding about requirements for biomanipulation success in this climate. 相似文献

The ecotone fish community of the littoral waters is a mixture of onshore migratory pelagian species and littoral species. It is characterized by high numeric and diversity variations produced under the effect of migrations, thermal perturbations and the local habitat variations. The sixty analyzed sampling units belong to five years of records, three seasons and three types of littoral habitats. The Kendall tau test identifies the seasonal variation as a significant criterion for sample classification. From the ecological view point it corresponds to phases of the thermal stratification. The start of the thermal stratification identifies the season of a highest pelagian onshore migration. The maximum thermal stratification shows the community structure at the end of a massive pelagian return. The late fall circulation describes the community structure prevailed by the local populations. The quantitative patterns were evaluated for each season based on a 95% confidence interval of the mean and on normalized weighed averages. A comparison of subsequent community structures allowed a species classification by the magnitude of their numeric variations. Regarding the analyses of the diversity variations, a new strategy was introduced based on independently derived indices of the community diversity. The strategy identifies two features: the seasonal models of the diversity variation and the abnormal cases. The models depict the trends/features of the diversity variations. The abnormal cases evaluate the local/temporal side effects. 相似文献
