Summary From the time of the report of the Philadelphia outbreak in 1976, the airborne contamination of patients through cooling towers had been suspected although never truly corroborated. Since then, contamination through different air conditioning systems or cooling towers has often been implicated in both epidemics and endemics as well as in sporadic cases. Whatever the conditions, contaminated water present in the different air conditioning systems remains the main source of infection. From the contaminated sites an aerosol occurs. The infectivity of the aerosol is linked to the size of the droplets (d≥μm). A close surveillance is mandatory and preventive measures have to be tanken.  相似文献

The microecology of Blastomyces dermatitidis, the dimorphic etiologic agentof the potentially fatal systemic fungal infection, blastomycosis, is not well defined.Blastomyces dermatitidis may occur periodically at natural sites, perhaps aided by rotting organic material, animal droppings and physical changes. Semi-quantitative growth studies of B. dermatitidis on 2% agar plates determined the ability toutilize or tolerate a variety of substrates including simple and complex molecules as carbon source, and organic and inorganic nitrogen sources. Allantoin, creatinine, quanidoacetic acid, guanidine and cysteine may be used as sole nitrogen source. Allantoin in combination with dextrose, glycerol, lichenen, celloboise and other wood by-products support growth of B. dermatitidis at room temperature. The nutritional conversion of the fungus to the yeast form at room temperature, well demonstrated on allantoin/glycerol/yeast extract media, appears to be affected by certain inorganic compounds. The organism tolerates low to moderate levels of alpha-pinene, tannic acid, shikimic acid, veratryl alcohol, vanillic acid, and polyethyleneglycol-200. There are significant differences among isolates regarding growth on various substances at 20° and 37° centigrade. It appears that a variety of wood by-products and animal waste substrates, in combination, support the growth of B. dermatitidis. Their role in the ecological niche of B. dermatitidis, and the importance of nutritional dimorphism in the natural environment warrants further investigation. In this review we focus on the ecological and evolutionary forces that determine the frequency and diversity of colicins inEscherichia coli. To begin, we describe that this killing phenotype is ubiquitous inE. coli, with as many as 50% of the isolates from a population producing colicin toxins, and that each population sampled has its own unique distribution of the more than 20 known colicin types. Next, we explore the dynamics of colicinogeny, which exhibits a typical form of frequency dependence, where the likelihood of successful colicin invasion into a population increases as the initial density of colicinogenic cells increases. We then incorporate thoughts on the evolution of chromosomal resistance to colicins and describe how resistance might influence the dynamics of colicinogen invasion and maintenance and the resulting colicin diversity. The final section deals with a genetic and phylogenetic characterization of colicins and a discussion of the evolutionary mechanisms responsible for generating colicin diversity. In this final section we provide details of the different molecular mechanisms known to play a role in generating colicin diversity, including the two most dominant forces in colincin evolution: recombination and positive, deversifying, selection.  相似文献

The distribution of Loxodes magnus and L. striatus (Karyorelictida) was investigated in two eutrophic waters (Esthwaite Water and Priest Pot, English Lake District). In the benthos, these species were most abundant at the sediment surface, at deeper sites, and when the bottom water was oxygenated. In the plankton, in Priest Pot, they were found only in the oxygen deficient summer hypolimnion. Experimental studies suggested that L. magnus and L. striatus required access to oxygen. Loxodes was apparently excluded from the oxygenated Priest Pot epilimnion by several adverse factors, one of which was bright light. It was concluded that the ecology of L. magnus and L. striatus resembles, in many ways, that of the advanced ciliates which were found associated with Loxodes.  相似文献

分子生态学是研究生命系统与环境系统相互作用机理及其分子机制的科学,可以从宏观和微观结合的角度真实反映生态现象的本质。简述产烃布朗葡萄藻形态与化学种等生理生态特征的基础上,综述了近年来国内外布朗葡萄藻分子生态学研究的新进展,主要包括分子系统发育学及其与化学种、基因组、地理来源等之间的关系。经典分类学上,关于布朗葡萄藻属于绿藻门(Chlorophyta)还是黄藻门(Xanthophyta)存在争议,而基于18S核糖体核糖核酸(18S ribosomal ribonucleic acid,18S rRNA)序列的分子系统发育学研究结果将布朗葡萄藻界定为绿藻门、共球藻纲(Trebouxiophyceae)。依据藻株的产烃种类和化学结构特征,可将布朗葡萄藻划分为A、B和L 3个化学种,而布朗葡萄藻的分子系统学进化关系与化学种间高度统一。在基因组大小上,位于同一大亚聚群中的化学种B与L间却存在明显差异,而进化关系较远的化学种B与A间则更相近。不同地理来源布朗葡萄藻的18S rRNA序列和内部转录间隔区(internal transcribed spacer,ITS)多态性较高,提示不同地缘藻株间存有较高的遗传多样性。探讨了布朗葡萄藻分子生态学研究尚待解决的问题,并对今后相关研究做了展望。  相似文献

Available data on determinants of production in species of Gelidium suggest several general patterns. Species diversity is higher in tropical latitudes, whereas in temperate latitudes the size of the fronds is larger, the species are ecologically dominant and commercially viable. Typically, the species occur on rocky substrate, often on coralline crusts, associated with rapid water movement and arranged in successive belts that can extend down to 25 m depth. Yields vary among species, to a maximum of 2.0 kg m–2 y–1. Growth and production in many species can best be explained by complex interactions between irradiance and nutrients. Temperature can interact synergistically with irradiance, while water movement compensates for nutrient limitations. Increased water movement or the addition of nutrients can prevent, to an extent, bleaching by high light and high temperature. Available data suggest the existence of at least eight biological factors affecting predicted productivity of Gelidium crops: morphology, age of the frond, thallus part, reproductive state, seasonality, crop density, life history phase and geographic and ecological origin of the species. At least four events can remove or destroy Gelidium crops: extreme low tides, storms, grazing and careless harvesting. Only the last-named factor has been analyzed over more extensive experimental periods.  相似文献

A material consisting of 66 species of Cephalodella (Rotifera), from diverse waters in south and central Sweden, was analyzed to reveal their possible relationships to substrate and habitat. Most species preferred periphytic environments. Most species have a broad ecological range, only a few being bog specialists. Ants are prominent components of most terrestrial arthropod food webs, yet due to their highly variable diet, the role ants play in arthropod communities can be difficult to resolve. Stable isotope analysis is a promising method for determining the dietary history of an organism, and has the potential to advance our understanding of the food web ecology of social insects. However, some unique characteristics of eusocial organisms can complicate the application of this technique to the study of their trophic ecology. Using stable isotopes of N and C, we investigated levels of intraspecific variation both within and among colonies. We also examined the effect of a common preservation technique on δ15N and δ13C values. We discuss the implications of our results on experimental design and sampling methods for studies using stable isotopes to investigate the trophic ecology of social insects. Macaques are found both in broadleaf evergreen forest and in more variable habitats. The former group might be expected to be subject to less variability in their environment and hence to suffer lower rates of density independent mortality. Life history evolution models predict that species in such conditions will have lower rates of development and breeding than those found in more variable habitats where density independent mortality is high. This prediction is tested here by comparing the breeding and development rates of nine species of macaque. Although measures of developmental rate are not found to vary in a predictable way with habitat, measures of breeding rate do correlate with habitat categories used. As predicted, species that are found in more variable habitats tend to have higher birth rates and a higher intrinsic rate of natural increase than do species in more stable, forest habitats. Contrary to prediction selection does not always act to produce an early age at first reproduction in macaques living in seasonal environments. This is discussed with relation to physiological and environmental constraints.  相似文献

Associations between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are widespread and well-studied. Yet little is known about the pattern of association between clonal plants and AM fungi. Here we report on the pattern of mycorrhizal association within the rhizome systems of mayapple, Podophyllum peltatum. Mayapple is a long-lived understory clonal herb that is classified as obligately mycorrhizal. We found that while all mayapple rhizome systems maintained mycorrhizal associations, the percent colonization of roots by AM fungi differed among ramets of different age. The highest concentrations of AM fungi were in the roots of intermediate-aged ramets, while roots beneath the youngest ramet were not colonized. This pattern of ramet age or position-dependent colonization was observed in two separate studies; each conducted in a different year and at a different site. The pattern of AM fungal colonization of mayapple rhizome systems suggests that the mycorrhizal relationship is facultative at the ramet level. This conclusion is reinforced by our observation that augmentation of soil phosphate lowers root colonization by AM fungi. We also found that soil phosphate concentrations were depleted by ca. 1% under the same ramet positions where roots bore the highest AM fungal loads. Three non-exclusive hypotheses are proposed regarding the mechanisms that might cause this developmentally dependent pattern of mycorrhizal association.  相似文献

A material consisting of 49 taxa of Lecane (Rotifera), from diverse waters in south and Central Sweden, was analyzed to reveal their relationships to substrate and habitat. Most species did not show any pronounced preference for any substrate, occurring in several diverse substrates, and especially in periphytic environments. Only a few species seemed to specialize in bog substrates. Some taxa were found, sometimes at a high frequency, on an artificial substrate, white cotton, indicating a high degree of mobility.  相似文献

Chacma baboons (Papio ursinus)were studied in a mountain habitat where the effects of high altitude and latitude combine to produce conditions as harsh as those experienced by the desert or hamadryas baboon (P. hamadryas).The population density was as low as that of hamadryas baboons. A survey of populations at altitudes between 1400 and 3000 m showed a strong negative correlation between altitude and group size, with the highest-living groups averaging just 13 individuals and, like hamadryas baboons, seasonally retreating from marginal habitat on the fringes of the range. Foraging activities in these groups relied heavily on the underground storage organs of plants and other items that were time-consuming to find, harvest, and process, placing severe constraints on the time budget. High-altitude and low-altitude groups were nevertheless able to maintain similar activity budgets. This is explicable through an interaction between the patterns of foraging and range usage and observed altitude differences in group size, population density, and home-range size. The behavior of mountain baboons provides insights into ecological effects on behavior both through local altitudinal variation and through similarities to other populations inhabiting marginal environments, notably P. hamadryas.Mountain baboons may represent a significant southern highland population which does not fit into the neat socioecological dichotomy of desert versus savannah baboons.  相似文献

The distribution ofCystopteris fragilis andC. dickieana in Afghanistan within the Flora Iranica region is studied. The latter species, for some ecological reason, occurs more frequently at higher altitudes. In both taxa higher polyploid levels also occur at high altitudes. The phenomenon can be correlated with the boreal-arctic distribution pattern. Polyploidism and spore-size classes are briefly mentioned as well as possible ecological adaptations. Evolutionary differentiation within both taxa are complex and still unknown.Dedicated to Univ.-Prof. DrK. H. Using metagenomic ‘parts lists’ to infer global patterns on microbial ecology remains a significant challenge. To deduce important ecological indicators such as environmental adaptation, molecular trait dispersal, diversity variation and primary production from the gene pool of an ecosystem, we integrated 25 ocean metagenomes with geographical, meteorological and geophysicochemical data. We find that climatic factors (temperature, sunlight) are the major determinants of the biomolecular repertoire of each sample and the main limiting factor on functional trait dispersal (absence of biogeographic provincialism). Molecular functional richness and diversity show a distinct latitudinal gradient peaking at 20°N and correlate with primary production. The latter can also be predicted from the molecular functional composition of an environmental sample. Together, our results show that the functional community composition derived from metagenomes is an important quantitative readout for molecular trait‐based biogeography and ecology.  相似文献

Vernal grass fires may encourage profuse flowering in clonal, colonies ofOxalis violacea. Long-styled colonies appear to be more floriferous than short-styled colonies and set a greater number of capsules. Individual flowers of both morphs live one or two days, change position on their respective pedicels and advertise nectar concealed at the base of the floral throat. AlthoughDiptera, Hymenoptera, andLepidoptera forage for nectar, bees (Andrenidae,Anthophoridae, Halictidae, andMegachilidae) probably make the only effective pollen transfers between the two morphs. Both male and female bees may transport pollen of both morphs and short-tongued bees (e.g.,Augochlorella spp.,Dialictus spp.) may be more common but as effective as pollinators as long-tongued bees (e.g.,Calliopsis andreniformis andHoplitis spp.). The conversion rate of flowers into capsules is only 13–17%. The spreading style in the short-styled morph is interpreted as an adaptation restricting insect-mediated, self-pollination but encouraging bee-stigma contact during nectar foraging.  相似文献

The subfamilyPhytelephantoideae comprises three genera (Ammandra, Aphandra, andPhytelephas) and seven species of dioecious palms. The floral scents ofAmmandra dasyneura, A. decasperma, Aphandra natalia, Phytelephas aequatorialis, P. macrocarpa, andP. seemannii were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. We studied the pollination biology ofA. natalia, P. aequatorialis, andP. macrocarpa, and tested how the synthetically produced main constituents of the floral scents ofAphandra andPhytelephas attracted insects in two natural populations ofPhytelephas. The genera are distinct in terms of floral scents.Ammandra has sesquiterpenes,Aphandra (+)-2-methoxy-3-sec-butylpyrazine, andPhytelephas p-methyl anisol. These constituents dominated the scents quantitatively and qualitatively. The similarity between scents of male and female inflorescences was 76.5% inAmmandra, 84.2% inAphandra, and >99% inPhytelephas. Different species ofAleocharinae (Staphylinidae) pollinateAphandra natalia andPhytelephas species and reproduce in their male inflorescences.Derelomini (Curculinoidae) andMystrops (Nitidulidae) only visit and pollinatePhytelephas in which male inflorescences they reproduce. A species ofBaridinae (Curculionidae) only visits and pollinatesAphandra natalia, and reproduces in its female inflorescence. The apparent reliance on one or a few floral scent constituents as attractants and few and specific pollinators may indicate co-evolution. Sympatric species ofPhytelephantoideae have different scents. We suggest that species with similar scents have allopatric distributions due to the absence of a pollinator isolation mechanism.  相似文献

The behavior and ecology ofAlouatta palliate àre well studied; we report here on the first long-term study of anotherAlouatta species, the red howler monkey,A. seniculus. AlthoughA. seniculus was studied at a high elevation in the Colombian Andes, it exhibits many behavioral and ecological similarities to lowlandA. palliata. Continuous focal sampling indicates thatA. seniculus spends 78.5% of its time resting, 5.6% moving, and 12.7% feeding. It has a day range of 1.09 km and a home range of 22 ha. Like its more northern relative,A. seniculus spends more than 50% of its feeding time on leaves–especially young leaves–but on a dry-weight basis, fruits comprise the majority of its diet. The small home and day ranges observed as well as the large amounts of time spent resting are all argued to be aspects of a relatively folivorous foraging strategy. Daily food intake is estimated to be 1.23 kg fresh weight (0.266 kg dry weight). Foraging efficiency (yield/time) varies by a factor of almost 6 across major food types, with item size and distribution being the key determinants. Food preferences change markedly over the activity period, with high-energy sources predominating early and high-protein sources late.  相似文献
