Summary The life cycle and social behaviour of the sweat bee Lasioglossum (Evylaeus) baleicum (Cockerell) was investigated in two geographically separate populations in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Colonies were excavated throughout the brood rearing season from an aggregation in Nishioka forest park, Sapporo, and near Kawakita in eastern Hokkaido during 2000 and 2001. The Nishioka population produced two discrete broods during the year and was weakly eusocial; 57% of workers were mated and 28% exhibited some ovarian development, 12–16% of the first brood was male, and workers were on average 4.5% smaller than their respective queen. In contrast, the population at Kawakita was solitary, and produced a single brood per year with an unbiased sex ratio. In addition however, there were some solitary colonies in the Nishioka population and evidence of a partial second brood in some colonies at Kawakita, suggesting differences between the populations are not fixed and that this species is truly socially polymorphic. L. (E.) baleicum is a member of the fulvicorne species group, which includes other examples of social polymorphic species as well as solitary and eusocial species, though this is the only species of this group so far known to exhibit a solitary/non-delayed eusocial polymorphism. Recent studies suggest that social polymorphism has both genetic and environmental influences, raising questions as to the relative import of each.  相似文献

The species Solanum surattense Burm.f. has importance in ayurvedic medicine and also as vegetable. Streptomycin-resistant plantlets were induced showing chloroplast encoded mutants in S. surattense from mutagenised (ethyl methane sulphonate and gamma-rays) cotyledon explants. Chloroplast encoded – streptomycin resistant – shoots were developed from green (unbleached) sectors of the cotyledons. The streptomycin-resistant plants were similar to parental plants in morphology and ploidy level (2n=2x=24). Reciprocal crosses between streptomycin-resistant and the original streptomycin sensitive plants have shown the non-Mendelian transmission under the control of chloroplast – DNA. These antibiotic resistant plants are useful in designing biochemical selection schemes aimed at somatic hybrid/cybrid recovery in S. surattense.  相似文献

Summary Actual and effective number of matings of Apis laboriosa Smith queens were estimated by analysing 40–192 workers or worker pupae of five colonies using microsatellites. Effective paternity frequencies varied from 13.63 to 31.57, with a mean of 20.19 (SD 6.07). Our results demonstrate that the Himalayan Giant honeybee A. laboriosa shows high levels of polyandry, typical of the genus.Received 30 January 2002; revised 24 October 2003; accepted 3 December 2003.  相似文献

Defense behavior of three, free living giant (Megapis) honey bee subspecies, Apis laboriosa, A. dorsata dorsata and A. dorsata breviligula, was compared. Disturbed worker bees responded with characteristic dorso-ventral defense body twisting (DBT). Workers of A. laboriosa twisted the thorax by 55°, and the two other A. dorsata subspecies by about 10° more. A. laboriosa workers raised the tip of the abdomen by 90° and workers of the two other bee subspecies by about 20° higher. Differences in those traits were highly significant between A. laboriosa and both A. dorsata subspecies, but were not significant between those two subspecies. The whole cycle of DBT was the most vigorous in A. d. breviligula (0.11 s), and it was twice as vigorous as in A. d. dorsata (0.26 s) and trice as in A. laboriosa (0.32 s). A. laboriosa twisted the body together with wings folded over the abdomen, while the two A. dorsata subspecies raised the abdomen between spread wings. This supports the opinion to treat A. laboriosa as a separate species. A hypothesis that the pattern of spatial leaf distribution in forest canopies is numerically related to the exponent of the self-thinning relationship in even-aged monocultures was tested by evaluating the crown fractal dimension of Pinus banksiana (jack pine) and Populus tremuloides (quaking aspen) in Wood Buffalo National Park, Canada. Pure species stands that were considered the most dense for a given mean tree size were measured to establish the empirical self-thinning relationships. The value of the self-thinning exponent was estimated as –1.42 with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) (–1.47, –1.36) for Pinus banksiana, and –1.29 with 95% CI (–1.45, –1.14) for Populus tremuloides. For each species the box dimension of spatial leaf distribution was estimated from unit cylinders described by sequentially lowering in forest canopies, horizontal flaps of one of various diameters attached to the top of a height-measuring pole. The box dimension appeared as 1.95 (1.84, 2.06) for Pinus banksiana, and 2.24 (2.05, 2.43) for Populus tremuloides. By assuming that the box dimension is equivalent to the fractal dimension at the inter-population level, the self-thinning exponent was predicted to be –1.53 (–1.62, –1.45) for Pinus banksiana, and –1.33 (–1.45, –1.23) for Populus tremuloides. The empirical exponent was equivalent to that predicted from the box fractal dimension, as judged by the 95% CI of the dimensions. We conclude that spatial patterns of leaf distribution in forest canopies, as being characterized by the box fractal dimension, are closely related to the value of the self-thinning exponent in the dense monocultures of the species we examined.  相似文献

Summary We have analysed the distribution of queens under stones at the core and at the periphery of a supercolony of Lasius neglectus that occupies 14 ha at Seva (NE Spain). Queens were not found alone, but rather within worker groups. Density at the center (mean ± s.d.: 1.38 ± 2.87 queens/stone; n = 100 stones; range 0–14) was not different from density at the periphery (1.18 ± 2.38; range 0–12). The estimate of the number of queens found under stones for the whole colony is about 35500. Egg-laying rates for queens from these two zones were obtained in the laboratory, at three different temperatures, and there were no differences detected. The presence of brood stages, from eggs to cocoons, was also similar in both zones. The homogeneous distribution of colony components may indicate that the area occupied by L. neglectus has already reached saturation. With a different technique – soil core extraction – we could estimate the density of workers in the soil: 800 workers per m2. Soil cores had 6.28 ± 20.0 workers/core (range: 0–173), giving a rough estimate of 1.12 × 108 workers in the soil, for the entire colony. Though few, some queens were also recovered from soil cores. Queen numbers for the supercolony, based on queens found in the soil, reaches the astounding level of 360000. Numbers are consistent with previous predictions.Received 10 September 2003; revised 1 December 2003; accepted 9 December 2003.  相似文献

A reproductive division of labor between subordinates and established reproductives is a hallmark of eusociality. In most groups, however, workers retain some reproductive capabilities. Across insect societies, measures of successful worker reproduction in the presence of a queen, with few exceptions, indicate that worker reproduction is kept at very low levels. There are, however, certain colony-level characteristics that may influence the degree to which worker reproduction is promoted, such as queen number, queen mating frequency, and physical presence of a queen in species with multiple nesting sites (polydomy). In this study, the level of worker reproduction in field colonies of the ant species Aphaenogaster cockerelli was measured. A. cockerelli is a monogynous and polydomous species, so worker reproduction across nesting sites was investigated. None of the 297 males sampled provided any evidence of worker reproduction. Worker reproduction would have been detectable if it was present at or above a level of 1.5 % of the total males per colony. An effective mating frequency for queens of this species was found to be 1.03. Although A. cockerelli colonies have many colony-level factors potentially promoting worker reproduction (workers with active, trophic egg-producing ovaries, a single singly-mated queen, workers who are physically separated from the queen), it is evident that worker reproduction is highly regulated. Synthesizing the extensive amount of policing and fertility signaling data previously reported on this species, A. cockerelli is presented as case study for how worker reproduction is repressed and cooperation is maintained in insect societies.  相似文献

Floral development in three species each of Leptospermum and Kunzea, and one species of Agonis, is described and compared. Differences in the number of stamens and their arrangement in the flower at anthesis are determined by the growth dynamics of the bud. In Leptospermum, early expansion of the bud is predominantly in the axial direction and causes the stamen primordia to be initiated in antepetalous chevrons. In Kunzea, early expansion occurs predominantly in the lateral direction and successive iterations of stamen primordia are inserted alternately at more or less the same level. In both genera, further expansion in the lateral plane spreads the stamens into a ring around the hypanthium. Agonis flexuosa is similar to Leptospermum. Other variable factors include the timing at which stamen initiation commences (earlier in Leptospermum than Kunzea), the duration of stamen initiation (hence the total number of stamens produced – varies within genera), and very late differential expansion that forces stamens into secondary antesepalous groups in A. flexuosa and L. myrsinoides. The authors thank Dr H. Toelken for kindly providing some material and the impetus for this project. This research was supported by Australian Research Council grant AS19131815.  相似文献

The small group of resurrection plants is a unique model which could help us in further understanding of abiotic stress tolerance. The most frequently used approach for investigations on gene functions in plant systems is genetic transformation. In this respect, the establishment of in vitro systems for regeneration and micro propagation is necessary. On the other hand, in vitro cultures of such rare plants could preserve their natural populations. Here, we present our procedure for in vitro regeneration and propagation of Haberlea rhodopensis – a resurrection plant species, endemic for the Balkan region.  相似文献

A number of scientific studies have investigated aspects of soles(Solea soleaandS. senegalensis) ecology, population genetics and biology in their natural environment, and the species have been extensively studied in captivity during the last decade. Studies on the genetic population structure of sole indicate that several distinct breeding populations exist within its distributional range in European waters. Recent studies suggest a phylogenetic relatedness ofS. soleaand S. senegalensis, being found as closest sister lineages in most reconstructions. However, studies on molecular genetics and morphological traits give diagnostic differences that consistently lead to their taxonomic separation at the specific rank. Studies show that sole spawn readily in captivity, and the buoyant, fertilized eggs are easily collected. Stocking density during maturation should be 1–1.5kg/m2, and temperature should be kept above 16°C (S. senegalensis) or between 8 and 12°C (S. solea). In nature, the onset of spawning is related to a rise in temperature occurring during spring (March–June). Salinity should be kept constant around 33–35 and the fish reared under simulated natural photoperiod (LDN). In other cultured flatfish species, a change in the photoperiod is the key environmental signal used to manipulate and control maturation, but at present time there are no published work that verifies or contradicts this for either S. senegalensisor S. solea. Studies indicate that a mixture of inert and live food may increase the weaning success of sole fry, and this can be further enhanced by using attractants in the dry feed. Future experiments are needed to determine the ideal time to commence weaning and determine the minimum duration of this period. Studies on alternative feeding strategies are also required. The effect of temperature and photoperiod on juvenile growth has not been studied systematically in neither of the two species and the relative importance of a direct photoperiod effect on growth in sole therefore remains to be defined.  相似文献

Allozyme spectra of peroxidase, esterase, superoxid dismutase, tyrosinase, alcohol dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, and acid phosphatase were examined in populations of sexual (Taraxacum serotinum and Pilosella echioides) and apomictic (T. officinale and P. officinarum) plant species. The heterozygosity in these populations (0.455–0.620) proved to be considerably higher than the average level characteristic of plant populations (0.058–0.185). The populations examined did not differ in the mean phenotype number , i.e., they exhibited the same diversity (3.188–3.380). The proportion of rare phenotypes h also did not differ between the sexual and apomictic species of the same genus, whereas this parameter in the Pilosella populations (0.150–0.174) was significantly higher than in the Taraxacum ones (0.093–0.114). The populations were characterized by numerous isozyme spectra (more than 11 per populations) and displayed multiple allelism (the mean allele frequency was 3.63–4.38 per locus). They exhibited a high percentage of rare (occurring at a frequency lower than 5%) spectra (35–80%). This indicates that agamic complexes, to which these populations belong, may have a more complicated genetic structure of both apomictic and sexual populations than the species that do not belong to agamic complexes.Translated from Genetika, Vol. 41, No. 2, 2005, pp. 203–215.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Kashin, Anfalov, Demochko.  相似文献

Summary Interspecific facultative social parasitism is well known in ants and in bumble-bees, but it is rarer in wasps. This form of parasitism is traditionally considered to be an intermediate stage in the evolution of obligate interspecific parasitism, where the parasites are no longer able to nest alone. We report field and experimental observations of a newly discovered facultative parasitic relationship between two closely related free-living Polistes species: P. nimphus and P. dominulus. P. nimphus foundresses sometimes usurp the nests of the larger P. dominulus before worker emergence. The invading queen takes over the nest with abundant abdomen stroking on the nest surface and is accepted by workers if they emerge 6 or more days after usurpation. Morphometric comparisons show that the usurper species, though smaller than its victims, has morphological adaptations consisting of larger heads, mandibles and front femora relative to their body size that may give it an advantage during nest invasion. This strategy is likely to be taken only after the foundress loses her original nest because invading P. nimphus queens have lower reproductive success than they would have had on their own nest. Overall, we found that P. nimphus usurpers use strategies of invasion similar to those of two obligate parasites, suggesting that this may be an example of one of the pathways by which social parasitism evolved.Received 4 April 2003; revised 8 August 2003; accepted 14 September 2003.  相似文献

A new hairtail, Trichiurus nickolensis, is described on the basis of ten specimens collected off northwestern Australia, off the Northern Territory, and in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. The new species strongly resembles T. brevis Wang and You in Wang et al., 1992, off Hainan Island, South China Sea, and T. russelli Dutt and Thankam, 1966, off the Waltair Coast, Andhra Pradesh, India, in having the highest point of the supraoccipital crest situated directly above the posterior margin of the eye and a relatively short caudal peduncle. Trichiurus nickolensis differs from those two species in being strongly pigmented on the anterior section of the dorsal fin membrane (vs. slightly pigmented), and having a dorsal head margin that appears concave in lateral view, rises gently from snout tip to above middle of orbit, and then extends more steeply to dorsal fin origin (vs. rising gently from tip of snout to dorsal fin origin). The new species also has a greater number of dorsal fin rays (III, 138–143 vs. III, 127–132 and III, 127–131 in T. brevis and T. russelli, respectively) and total vertebrae (160–166 vs. 147–155 and 149–153), and shorter preanal length (mean 30% TL vs. 33% TL and 35% TL), head length (11% TL vs. 12% TL and 13% TL) and upper jaw length (4% TL vs. 5% TL and 5% TL).  相似文献

A pure, active cytochrome b 6 f was isolated from the chloroplasts of the marine green alga, Bryopsis corticulans. To investigate and characterize this cytochrome b 6 f complex, sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE), absorption spectra measurement and HPLC were employed. It was shown that this purified complex contained four large subunits with apparent molecular masses of 34.8, 24, 18.7 and 16.7 kD. The ratio of Cyt b 6 to Cytf was 2.01 : 1. The cytochromeb 6 f was shown to catalyze the transfer of 73 electrons from decylplastoquinol to plastocyanin–ferricyanide per Cyt f per second. α-Carotene, one kind of carotenoid that has not been found to present in cytochrome b 6 f complex, was discovered in this preparation by reversed phase HPLC. It was different from β-carotene usually found in cytochrome b 6 f complex. The configuration of the major α-carotene component was assigned to be 9-cis by resonance Raman spectroscopy. Different from the previous reports, the configuration of this α-carotene in dissociated state was determined to be all-trans. Besides this carotene, chlorophyll a was also found in this complex. It was shown that the molecular ratios of chlorophylla, cis and all-trans-α-carotene to Cyt f in this complex were 1.2, 0.7 and 0.2, respectively.  相似文献

The gene cspH , which encodes one of the cold-shock proteins in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, has previously been reported to be induced during early exponential phase at 37°C. In the present study, the expression of cspH upon nutrient up-shift at 37°C was investigated and found to be affected by DNA gyrase and DNA-binding protein Fis. When cells at stationary phase were subcultured into a rich medium, the mRNA level of cspH increased dramatically prior to the first cell division. However, when the cells were treated with DNA gyrase inhibitors, cspH mRNA was not induced upon nutrient up-shift. The low level of DNA superhelical density at the cspH promoter in part affected the expression of cspH mRNA in vitro. In addition, a fis-deficient strain had a lower level of cspH mRNA than the wild-type upon nutrient up-shift. Finally, a cspH–lacZ construct, in which the putative binding region for Fis was deleted in the cspH promoter, expressed a low level of LacZ, in contrast to the native cspH–lacZ construct. This revised version was published online in July 2004 with corrections to Fig. 4.  相似文献

A study was made of environmental factors affecting the growth of Rhizoclonium riparium in order to evaluate its suitability for large-scale culturing. The results indicate that under the natural conditions prevailing at Taishi, Taiwan, this species can grow year-round, with a monthly biomass production (oven-dried) of 945–1540 kg ha−1 pond surface (assuming a pond depth of 1 m). The specific growth rate ranged from –2.1 to 10.4% per day. Salinity and temperature, both influenced the rate significantly, with optimal values at 20% and 25 °C, respectively. Short (2-mm) lengths of filaments had a higher specific growth rate than longer (20 mm) filaments. Under rotational culturing conditions, the specific growth rate was reduced when flow was increased.  相似文献
