To begin to explore the role of biogenic amines in reproductive division of labor in social insects, brain levels of dopamine, serotonin, and octopamine were measured in bumble bee (Bombus terrestris) workers and queens that differ in behavioral and reproductive state. Levels of all three amines were similar for mated and virgin queens. Young workers that developed with or without a queen had similar amine levels, but in queenright colonies differences in biogenic amine levels were associated with differences in behavior and reproductive physiology. Dominant workers had significantly higher octopamine levels compared with workers of lower dominance status but of similar size, age, and ovary state. High dopamine levels were associated with the last stages of oocyte development irrespective of worker social status and behavior. These results suggest that biogenic amines are involved in behavioral and physiological aspects of regulation of reproduction in bumble bees. Accepted: 10 December 1999  相似文献

We examined changes in the content of biogenic amines in the brains of ant queen associated with early colony establishment. In ants, including Formica japonica, winged virgin queens lose their wings following copulation, and then start establishing a colony. Significant changes in brain biogenic amine content in the queen are associated with transition from winged virgin queen to wingless mated queen. The levels of serotonin (5HT), octopamine (OA) and dopamine (DA) decreased significantly in the brain of the queen after starting a colony. On the other hand, tyramine (TA) increased significantly in the brain following colony establishment. Catabolized substances of the biogenic amines in the brain were also measured. The levels of N-acetyloctopamine (Nac-OA) and N-acetyltyramine (Nac-TA) in the brain did not show a significant change after the queen established a colony. However, the levels of N-acetylserotonin (Nac-5HT) in the brain were significantly higher in wingless mated queens than in winged virgin queens, whereas levels of N-acetyldopamine (Nac-DA) in the brain were significantly lower in wingless mated queens than winged virgin queens. These results suggest that serotonergic and octopaminergic systems in the brain of the queen change when the mated queen starts to establish a new colony.  相似文献

The higher proportion of polygynous ant species in northern areas indicates that cold climates influence queen number per colony. It is unclear, however, what ecological and physiological factors facilitate the dominance of polygynous species in cold climates. This is the case in two common arboreal ants in Japan-Camponotus yamaokai and C. nawai-which are quite similar in morphology, but different in social structure and geographical distribution. Polygynous C. yamaokai inhabits colder areas, whereas monogynyous C. nawai inhabits warmer climates. We compared queen survival in both ants at low temperature to evaluate whether interspecific difference in cold tolerance can explain the geographical distribution. We examined the influence of cohabitation with other individuals, as well as individual cold tolerance. Experimental groups with different caste compositions were prepared and maintained under conditions simulating in the laboratory climates of the northern limit of C. nawai. Wintering experiments revealed that C. yamaokai queens survived longer than C. nawai queens under solitary conditions, although half of the queens died in less than a month, even in C. yamaokai. Queens hibernating with workers survived longer than solitary queens, but queen number did not affect queen survival. Cohabitation with workers allowed 80% of C. yamaokai queens to survive more than two months. Under field conditions, monogynous C. nawai foundresses overwinter without workers, whereas new queens of polygynous C. yamaokai always overwinter with many workers. Thus, the geographical distribution of these ants appears to depend on the overwintering behavior of new queens.  相似文献

Summary Changes in biogenic amine levels associated with the morphological and behavioural development of the worker honeybee are examined.A significant increase in amine levels in the head of the honeybee is associated with transition from the larval to pupal stage. Adult emergence is also accompanied by a significant increase in 5-HT levels in the brain, but no significant change in brain dopamine (DA) levels. NADA (N-acetyldopamine) levels increase during larval and pupal development, but in contrast to both DA and 5-HT, drop significantly during the transition from pupa to adult.Levels of DA in the brain of nectar and pollen forager bees, presumed to be among the oldest adults sampled, were found to be significantly higher than in nurses, undertakers or food storers. These results suggest that an age-dependent change in amine levels occurs in the brain of the worker bee. In the optic lobes, levels of DA and 5-HT were found to be significantly higher in pollen forager bees than in all other behavioural groups. Significant differences in amine levels in the optic lobes of nectar foragers and pollen foragers indicate that some differences in amine levels occur independent of worker age. The functional significance of differences in brain amine levels and whether or not biogenic amines play a direct role in the control of honeybee behaviour has yet to be established.Abbreviations DA dopamine - 5-HT 5-hydroxytryptamine or serotonin - NADA N-acetyldopamine  相似文献

To test whether insect antennae are necessary for eliciting courtship and aggression toward appropriate partners, we antennectomized adult male crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) and observed their behavior toward other antennectomized males and intact females. At 7 days after removal of both antennae, pairs of antennectomized males were placed together; 80% displayed courtship behavior, generating courtship song by rubbing their forewings together, toward other antennectomized males, and 20% displayed aggressive behavior. Only 45% courted intact females. No intact males courted antennectomized males, and 80% displayed aggressive behavior. All intact males courted females. The results for males with one antenna removed were essentially the same as for intact males. These findings indicate that a high proportion of male crickets with both antennae removed court other males and fail to display male-male aggression, demonstrating that removal of antennae from male crickets induces male-male courtship and that an antenna is necessary for the expression of male-male aggression. Moreover, brain serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) levels in male crickets were significantly reduced at 7 days after removal of antennae. The reduction of 5-HT was detected primarily in the central body of the brain. Thus, 5-HT in the central body of the male cricket brain may be involved in the behavioral changes.  相似文献

Aggressive behavior of white-eye mutant crickets was investigated and compared with that of wild-type crickets. In the dark, wild-type pairs performed long-lasting fights with significantly higher aggressive levels compared to those in the light. In contrast, fights between two white-eye mutants were not significantly different with those between two wild-type crickets both in duration and the aggressive levels. Ethograms of aggressive behavior showed that the mutants could show typical sequentially escalating fight with the same behavioral categories as the wild-type crickets. These results indicate that the white-eye mutants are able to express normal aggressive behavior.  相似文献

When pairs of adult male crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) that had been housed individually for 7 days were placed together, they fought, and dominant-subordinate relationships were formed within 1min. Aggressive behavior by the dominant male was repeated during the period in which the two males were kept together. Immediately after 10min of aggressive interaction, brain serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) levels were unchanged in dominant males and significantly reduced in subordinate males. The emission of aggressive song by dominant males is known to be abolished by removal of the wings. All wings were thus removed from male crickets. After 7 days of isolation, pairs of wingless males were placed together. The wingless males fought and formed dominant-subordinate relationships within 1min. The wingless, dominant males displayed aggressive behavior. Brain 5-HT levels in the wingless males were reduced immediately after 10min of aggressive interaction, and no significant differences in brain 5-HT levels were detected between the dominant and subordinate males, unlike the case for intact males. These data indicate a difference in brain serotonergic activity between dominant and subordinate male crickets during aggressive interaction, and suggest that aggressive behavior by dominant male crickets rapidly reduce brain 5-HT levels in subordinate ones. Furthermore, the data suggest that aggressive song is responsible for the change in brain 5-HT levels.  相似文献

Winning an agonistic interaction against a conspecific is known to heighten aggressiveness, but the underlying events and mechanism are poorly understood. We quantified the effect of experiencing successive wins on aggression in adult male crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) by staging knockout tournaments and investigated its dependence on biogenic amines by treatment with amine receptor antagonists. For an inter-fight interval of 5 min, fights between winners escalated to higher levels of aggression and lasted significantly longer than the preceding round. This winner effect is transient, and no longer evident for an inter-fight interval of 20 min, indicating that it does not result from selecting individuals that were hyper-aggressive from the outset. A winner effect was also evident in crickets that experienced wins without physical exertion, or that engaged in fights that were interrupted before a win was experienced. Finally, the winner effect was abolished by prior treatment with epinastine, a highly selective octopamine receptor blocker, but not by propranolol, a ß-adrenergic receptor antagonist, nor by yohimbine, an insect tyramine receptor blocker nor by fluphenazine an insect dopamine-receptor blocker. Taken together our study in the cricket indicates that the physical exertion of fighting, together with some rewarding aspect of the actual winning experience, leads to a transient increase in aggressive motivation via activation of the octopaminergic system, the invertebrate equivalent to the adrenergic system of vertebrates.  相似文献

To explore the roles of biogenic amines in reproduction in workers in primitively eusocial societies, correlations between brain levels of biogenic amines and ovarian development or oviposition in workers of the paper wasp Polistes chinensis were investigated. Several workers in queenright colonies developed ovaries and were potential egg-layers. Maximum ovarian width was significantly correlated with brain levels of dopamine, serotonin and their metabolites (N-acetyldopamine and N-acetylserotonin). Individuals with developed ovaries proceeded with yolk formation had significantly higher levels of brain dopamine, serotonin and N-acetyldopamine compared with individuals with undeveloped ovaries. Brain dopamine levels were higher in egg-laying individuals than in other individuals with developed ovaries. Thus, the workers of the paper wasp showed quantitative differences in brain dopamine levels correlated with reproduction. These results suggest that the brain levels of biogenic amines in paper wasp workers correspond to their tasks, and that there is a mechanism for promoting reproduction by dopamine, as previously reported in the workers of eusocial bees.  相似文献

Aggressive and escape behaviors were analysed in crickets (Orthoptera) treated with either reserpine, a nonspecific depleter of biogenic amines, or the synthesis inhibitors alpha-methyltryptophan (AMTP) and alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine (AMT) to specifically deplete serotonin, respectively dopamine and octopamine. Standard immunocytochemical techniques were used to verify depletion from central nervous tissue, and determine the effective dosages. Reserpinized crickets became exceedingly lethargic and had severely depressed escape responses. However, they were still able to express all the major elements of the escalating sequences of stereotype motor performances that typifies normal aggressive behavior in the cricket. AMT and AMTP treatment had opposing influences on escape behavior, being enhanced by serotonin depletion, but depressed by dopamine/octopamine depletion. AMTP-induced serotonin depletion had no influence on aggressive or submissive behaviors. AMT-treated crickets could normally only be brought to fight by coaxing. Though capable of expressing aggressive behavior per se, agonistic encounters between AMT-treated crickets were shorter, and rarely involved actual physical interactions. Hence, although amines seem to have similar actions on escape behavior in insects and crustaceans, the aminergic control of aggression seems to be fundamentally different in these arthropods groups. We conclude that amines are not in principle required for the initiation and operation of the motor circuits underlying aggression in the cricket. However, octopamine and/or dopamine seem necessary for establishing a level of excitability sufficient for aggressive behavior to become overt in response to appropriate natural releasing stimuli.  相似文献

We investigated whether octopamine (OA) is associated with the disappearance of cooperation in Polyrhachis moesta ant queens. Queens of P. moesta facultatively found the colony with genetically unrelated queens. The founding queens perform frequent food exchange with these non-related queens and partake in cooperative brood rearing, whereas single colony queens exclude non-related queens via aggressive behaviour. Thus, aggression is a factor that reduces cooperation. Given that aggression is generally associated with brain OA in insects, we hypothesized that OA controls the behavioural change in cooperation in the ant queen, via an increase in aggression. To test this hypothesis, we compared the amounts of OA and related substances in the brain between founding and colony queens, and observed the interaction of founding queens following oral OA administration. The brain OA levels in colony queens were significantly higher than those in founding queens. Oral administration of OA to founding queens caused significantly less trophallaxis and allogrooming behaviour than in the control founding queens, but with no significant increase in aggression. These results suggest that OA promotes the disappearance of cooperation in founding queens of P. moesta. This is the first study to reveal the neuroendocrine mechanism of cooperation in ant queens.  相似文献

We examined how queens of the primitively eusocial wasp, Polistes fuscatus, stimulate foraging by workers in 10 small, post-worker-emergence field colonies. We experimentally increased colony needs, including needs of the brood, by removing a colony's most active foragers (thereby decreasing the colony's foraging rate), and found that the queen significantly increased both her level of activity and rate of aggressive interactions. Most aggressive interactions were directed at dominant workers. Removal of a colony's least active foragers, however, produced no such effect. Our results, together with those of Reeve & Gamboa (1983, 1987), indicate that queens are sensitive to brood needs, and that they behaviorally regulate worker foraging to match brood needs by increasing their level of activity and rate of aggressive interactions.  相似文献

Social insect workers usually participate first in intranidal tasks (i.e. act as nurses within the nest) and then switch to extranidal tasks and become foragers. However, foragers sometimes switch back again to brood care and become reverted nurses. Behavioural and physiological correlates of the transition nurse–forager (behavioural maturation) and forager–reverted nurse (behavioural reversion) are relatively well known in the honeybee, although they are less explored in ants. To understand better the role of biogenic amines in ant behavioural maturation and behavioural reversion, the levels of octopamine (OA), dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5‐HT) are examined in the brains of nurses, foragers and reverted nurses of the red wood ant Formica polyctena Först. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Brain OA levels and the ratios OA : DA and OA : 5‐HT are higher in nurses than in foragers and reverted nurses. Reverted nurses and foragers do not differ significantly with respect to brain biogenic amine levels and amine ratios. Biogenic amine levels in brains of workers of F. polyctena are thus maturation‐related rather than task‐related. This is one of the first studies of neurochemical correlates of ant behavioural maturation and the first attempt to identify neurobiological correlates of ant behavioural reversion. The data obtained provide further evidence that neurobiological processes underlying honeybee and ant behavioural maturation and behavioural reversion reveal important differences.

Eusocial insects are characterized by division of labor among a sterile worker caste and a reproductive queen. In the honeybee both female castes are determined postembryonically by environmental factors, and queens develop substantially faster than workers. Since olfaction plays a crucial role in organizing honeybee behavior and social interactions, we compared the development of primary and secondary olfactory centers in the brain. Age-synchronized queen and worker pupae were raised in incubators at 34.5 degrees C, and their external morphology was characterized for all pupal stages. The development of olfactory synaptic neuropil was analyzed using anti-synapsin immunocytochemistry, f-actin-phalloidin labeling and confocal microscopy. In the antennal lobes of queens olfactory glomeruli formed approximately 4 days earlier than in workers. The adult number of olfactory glomeruli was in a similar range, but the total glomerular volume was slightly smaller in queens. Olfactory and visual subdivisions (lip, collar) of the mushroom-body calyx formed early, whereas the basal ring separated late. Synaptic microglomeruli in the olfactory lip were established approximately 3-4 days earlier in queens compared to workers. We propose that developmental heterochrony results in fewer synapses in olfactory centers (smaller glomeruli, fewer microglomeruli) in queens, which may result in poorer performance on olfactory learning tasks compared to workers.  相似文献

Behavioral catalogues, transition matrices between 2 consecutive behavioral acts, and the frequency distribution of time spent in each behavioral act were described for queens and workers of a Japanese paper wasp,Polistes chinensis antennalis in the ergonomic stage (the period from the emergence of the first worker to the emergenece of the first reproductive). The results were; (1) The whole behavior repertoire of queens was completely included in that of workers. Workers oviposited frequently in queen-right colonies. (2) The proportion of off-nest activities to the number of total acts for workers was higher than that for queens. The proportion of time spent off the nest in workers was 5 times as high as that in queens. (3) There was no significant difference in the proportion of number of oviposition to the total number of acts between queens and workers. The oviposition rate was 0.06 eggs/h for workers and 0.37 eggs/h for queens. Queens made more dominance behavior and workers more subordinated behavior. Queens made abdomen wagging more frequently than workers. (4) For behavioral acts common in both queens and workers, the mean duration of a specific act was approximately equal for both. The mean duration of unsuccessful flesh collection for workers was 3.4 times as longs as that for queens. Workers did not search for flesh in 10.1% of duration of flesh collections in the field. (5) The pattern of transitions between 2 consecutive behavioral acts in workers was similar to that in queens. (6) Alien workers approaching a nest with a load were more often accepted by the nest occupants than alien workers with no load. Alien workers with no load were not accepted as often as a legitimate nestmates with no load. The reproductive division of labor between queens and workers inP. chinesis antennalis was incomplete. This suggests worker-queen conflict in different reproductive strategies among colony members. Several behaviors were consistent with the view that they are the behavioral expression of this conflict.  相似文献

Potential reproductive conflicts are common in social insects and may occur between and within castes. In multiqueen (polygyne) colonies of ants, reproductive conflicts among coexisting queens may be resolved by aggressive interactions and/or by pheromonal signalling. Pheromonal signals may be directed at workers, which may adjust the reproductive shares of queens behaviourally. Workers are expected to favour a queen that is more likely to be their mother and to produce offspring of close kin to them. We used microsatellite markers to study reproductive partitioning between cobreeding Formica fusca queens in a laboratory experiment where workers received a choice between two queens. We expected queens of this species to communicate their reproductive status by chemical communication, because no aggressive interactions between queens have been observed. We found that queens of different reproductive status (with majority, minority or no production) differed in their cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles. The fecundity of a queen was associated with worker behaviour; the higher a queen's fecundity, the more attention she received from workers. Our results suggest that a queen fecundity signal is encoded in her CHC profile and acts as a pheromone for workers, which respond to the signal by discriminating between queens. Dietary Folate and Biogenic Amines in the CNS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abnormal biogenic amine biosynthesis has been observed in humans and animals with endogenous and exogenous disturbances in folate metabolism. In an attempt to study this interaction biochemically, rats were depleted or repleted with folate for 10 weeks. Folate levels in depleted animals in serum and CSF correlated with stores in liver and brain, respectively. In depleted or repleted animals, there was no significant effect on biogenic amine metabolism in the CNS, as determined by quantitation of biogenic amines in brain and their respective metabolites in brain and CSF. These results are contrary to studies by other investigators. We suspect, however, that specific genetic defects in folate metabolism do result in impaired biogenic amine metabolism and probably at the level of disturbed biopterin cofactor functions.  相似文献

In social insects, the typical mode of colony foundation occurs when a single queen is inseminated by a male and establishes a new colony, although we can find interspecific and intraspecific variations in queen number and queen-mating frequencies in a single colony. This study aimed to verify the queen number in Pachycondyla striata (Smith) colonies and to evaluate the level of aggressiveness among workers. We collected 14 colonies of P. striata. The behaviors of individuals from five multiple-queen colonies maintained in laboratory were studied by the method of scan sampling. In order to evaluate aggressiveness, dyadic encounters among heterocolonial and homocolonial workers were performed. The results showed that colonies of P. striata can have two or more mated queens (polygynous colonies) besides to monogynous ones (colony containing one queen). Because in polygynous colonies the number of workers was relatively low, such colonies could represent colonies in the foundation phase that characterize a pleometrosis state. In fact, ovarian development analysis from queens showed that the number of queens in the colonies seemed to be unstable. Despite a few cases of oophagy (egg cannibalism), social hierarchy among queens is unclear in comparison to other Pachycondyla species. In addition, aggressiveness increased with distance among nests. Nearby colonies (less than 1 m apart) showed a low level of aggressiveness, suggesting the presence of polydomy, that is, a unique colony can occupy multiple nests. Polygyny associated to polydomy in founding colonies may confer benefits on growth and dispersion of colonies in the studied environments.  相似文献
