First record of Chilomycterus reticulatus (Osteichthyes: Diodontidae) in the Mediterranean Sea

The spotfin burrfish Chilomycterus reticulatus (405 mm standard length) is recorded for the first time on the shoreline of the Mediterranean Sea. The adult specimen was found dried on a beach near the south Sardinian Sea (S. Antioco's Island). Photographs and morphometrics of the specimen are given.     

Neomerinthe bathypevimensis sp. nov. from deep waters of the southern Red Sea

A new species of scorpionfish Neomerinthe bathyperimensis is described from a single specimen, dredged in deep waters of the southern Red Sea. The type specimen is aberrant in that it lacks the anal-fin spines and their supporting pterygiophores. This is the first record of the genus from the Red Sea and the north-western Indian Ocean.     

First record of the dog snapper Lutjanus jocu in the Mediterranean Sea

The capture of a single specimen of the dog snapper Lutjanus jocu from the Ligurian Sea (north‐west Mediterranean Sea) in November 2005 is reported. This finding constitutes the first record of this species from the Mediterranean Sea.     

Presence of the Guinean puffer Sphoeroides marmoratus (Lowe, 1838) in the Mediterranean Sea

The collection of a single specimen of the Guinean puffer Sphoeroides marmoratus from the Ionian Sea in September 1977, misidentified at that time as Lagocephalus lagocephalus , shows that this subtropical species of fish has occurred in the Mediterranean Sea from 30 years ago.     

The occurrence of Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788), (Osteichthyes, Perciformes, Stromateoidei, Stromateidae) in the North Sea

The occurrence in the North Sea of a specimen of the white pomfret, Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788), a mesopelagic fish which is native to the Indian Ocean and particularly South-east Asia and the East China Sea, is described. Other anomalous distribution records for the same species are examined and some possible explanations investigated.     

First record of the paedomorphic fish Schindleria (Gobioidei, Schindleriidae) from the Red Sea

A male specimen of the paedomorphic fish Schindleria sp. was collected by plankton net, in February 2005, from a reef lagoon from Hurghada on the Egyptian coast of the northern Red Sea. This is the first record of the Schindleriidae in the Red Sea.     

The Japanese threadfin bream Nemipterus japonicus, a new Indo‐Pacific fish in the Mediterranean Sea

A specimen of the Japanese threadfin bream Nemipterus japonicus was recorded for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea. The presence of this Indo‐Pacific fish in the Mediterranean is evidently due to migration from the Red Sea via the Suez Canal.

The largescaled terapon Terapon theraps: a new Indo‐Pacific fish in the Mediterranean Sea

A specimen of the largescaled terapon Terapon theraps was recorded for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea. The finding of T. theraps in the northernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea raises the number of Lessepsian migrant species to at least 68 and in the Adriatic Sea to at least 11.

The First Finding of the Actinia Synandwakia hozawai in the Sea of Okhotsk

The finding of the actinia Synandwakia hozawai in the coastal waters of northern Sakhalin (Sea of Okhotsk) suggests a wider range of this species, which was previously only known to inhabit the coastal waters of eastern Japan. Data are presented on the morphology of the S. hozawai specimen from the Sea of Okhotsk and the types of its nematocysts.     

First record of the Sphyraena chrysotaenia (Klunzinger, 1884) (Pisces, Sphyraenidae) from the Adriatic Sea

One specimen of the obtuse barracuda Sphyraena chrysotaenia is recorded for the first time from the Adriatic Sea.     

First record of saddleback syndrome in wild parrotfish Sparisoma cretense (L., 1758) (Perciformes, Scaridae)

The saddleback syndrome is recorded for the first time in a wild fish population of the Mediterranean Sea. The deformed specimen belongs to Sparisoma cretense and presents the typical saddleback phenotype of missing spines in the dorsal fin.     

Seasonal dynamics of activity of oxidative modification of proteins and oxidation-inhibiting enzymes in the blood of goby Neogobius melanostomus inhabiting the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov

Seasonal dynamics of activity of oxidative modification of proteins and oxidation-inhibiting enzymes was studied in the blood of round goby Neogobius melanostomus that inhabits the coastal areas of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The activity of oxidative modification of proteins and oxidation-inhibiting processes depend on the physiological state of a peculiar specimen, on the hydrochemical parameters of the environment, and on the anthropogenic load in the studied areas during different seasons.     

Occurrence of the Erythrean invader Pteragogus pelycus Randall, 1981 (Teleostei: Labridae) in the eastern Aegean sea

The occurrence of the Erythrean fish Pteragogus pelycus, off Kusadasi Bay, Turkey, eastern Aegean Sea, is here reported for the first time. One specimen was collected and it is now maintained in aquarium. The finding shows that its population is expanding northwards, along the Anatolian coasts of the Aegean Sea, approaching the colonization of the whole south and central basin.     

Westernmost record of the diamondback puffer,Lagocephalus guentheri (Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae) in the Mediterranean Sea: First record from Greek waters

On 5th November 2017, a puffer fish specimen was caught in the Aegean Sea. Morphological and molecular analysis identified it as Lagocephalus guentheri. This first record from Greek waters represents the westernmost observation of the species in the Mediterranean Sea. The expansion and establishment of puffer fish species in the basin are discussed, with particular emphasis on the importance of the additional use of molecular analysis for increasing the efficiency in understanding species spread and dynamics.
