The marine piscicolid leech Calliobdella knightjonesi sp. nov. from the Oregon coast is described and illustrated. Mature individuals do not exceed 10 mm in length, have faint reddish-brown segmental pigment bands, small pulsatile vesicles, six pairs of testisacs and a well-developed seminal receptacle connected to the posterior portion of the bursa by paired tissue strands. Phylogenetic relationships of all genera of the fish leech subfamily Pontobdellinae were investigated using mitochondrial (12S rDNA, COI, tRNA-Leu, ND1) and nuclear (28S rDNA) DNA sequences under maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference and parsimony. All methods resulted in trees that corroborated the monophyly of the family Piscicolidae, but recovered their subfamily Pontobdellinae as non-monophyletic. Based on the basal position of the giant Antarctic Megaliobdella szidati , it is hypothesized that the putative ancestor of fish leeches was a free-ranging, large bodied, muscular leech. The next branch contains parasites of cartilaginous fishes, Pontobdella muricata and Pontobdella macrothela . Two remaining genera of the subfamily (the Arctic Oxytonostoma and the Antarctic Moorebdellina ) showed weak affinities to other piscicolid taxa. The obtained phylogenetic hypothesis suggests a possible transition from an ancestral free-ranging life style and temporary parasitism, to parasitism on cartilaginous fishes, followed by parasitism on bony fishes.  相似文献

Two species of Malmiana (=Ottoniobdella) are recorded from Cottusbubalis on the Yorkshire coast. Malmiana bubali sp. n. has sixeyes, but no metameric markings or posterior ocelli. Malmiana yorki sp. n. has four eyes and 14 posterior ocelli. The body in both is somewhat flattened, but their other characters clearly place them in this genus, the history of which is reviewed.  相似文献

Hypodermic insemination occurs in piscicolid leeches (Hirudinea, Rhynchobdellida, Piscicolidae). The spermatophore is implanted in a specialized region of the leech body, the copulatory area. Just beneath the copulatory area, there is a specialized connective tissue (vector tissue) that is considered to guide the sperm toward the ovaries. In this study, we show that the vector tissue in the four species of the genus Piscicola is composed of a mass of cells located directly beneath the copulatory area, and two thin strands extend toward the ovaries. The ultrastructure of the vector tissue has been described for the first time. Four cell types were identified, constructing the vector tissue. The envelope of this tissue is made up of extracellular fibrous matrix and two types of cells: vesicular and flat envelope cells, which are embedded within the matrix. The rest of the tissue is formed of granular and plasmatic cells. Both of these last cell types have prominent cytoplasmic projections, filled with a filamentous material. However, only granular cells have numerous small electron-dense granules in their cytoplasm. The vector tissue was described prior, during and following copulation. Sperm passes within free spaces between the granular and plasmatic cells. Characteristic vector tissue cells also occur within the ovary wall and inside the ovary lumen. This supports earlier data, which postulated that the vector tissue appears to be an outgrowth of the ovary wall.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships of fish leeches (Piscicolidae) were deduced from combined mitochondrial DNA sequences of 12S rDNA and COI genes using Bayesian inference and Maximum Likelihood, as well as from a combined molecular-morphological data matrix using Maximum Parsimony. Monophyly of the family was confirmed. The traditional subdivision into three subfamilies, the Platybdellinae, Pontobdellinae, and Piscicolinae, received weak support, but was not challenged by alternative groupings. In contrast to prior classifications, a basal split emerged between the Pontobdellinae on the one hand, and the Platybdellinae and Piscicolinae on the other. The complex coelomic system of pontobdellines is viewed as plesiomorphic, and independent reductions of the coelom in other fish leech groups are hypothesized. According to the inferred phylogeny, seawater was the primary habitat of fish leeches. Eurasian freshwaters were colonized by a species-rich freshwater clade (genera Piscicola , Baicalobdella , Cystobranchus and Caspiobdella ) and, probably independently, by the Asian genus Limnotrachelobdella .  相似文献

Three genera and eight species, three new, of myxosporida were recovered from seven genera and twenty species of geographically dispersed macrourid fishes. The constancy in spore dimensions of these species over large distances and among many host species was remarkable. 人类活动引起的大气CO2浓度的升高,除了使全球温度升高外,导致的另一个严重生态问题——海洋酸化(Ocean acidification,OA),受到社会各界包括科研界的高度重视,该领域的大部分研究结果都是在近十年才发表出来的,目前还有很多需要解决的问题。海洋酸化的研究涉及到很多学科的交叉包括化学、古生物学、生态学、生物地球化学等等。在生物学领域,海洋酸化主要围绕敏感物种,例如由碳酸钙形成贝壳或外骨骼的贝类,珊瑚礁群体等。鱼类作为海洋脊椎动物的代表生物类群,自身具有一定的酸碱平衡调节能力,但相关海洋酸化方向的研究并不是很多。尽管人们对于海洋酸化对鱼类的影响了解甚少,这并不说明海洋酸化对鱼类没有作用或者效应小,在相关研究逐步展开的同时,发现鱼类同样受到海洋酸化的危害,几乎涉及到鱼类整个生活史和几乎大部分生理过程,尤其是早期生活史的高度敏感。因此就目前国内外对此领域研究结果做综述,以期待业界同行能够对海水鱼类这个大的类群引起重视。  相似文献

Abstract. Leeches are common terrestrial and aquatic annelids, parasitizing or feeding on a wide range of host taxa. Here we report evidence for an unusual feeding behavior of egg‐feeding in the piscicolid leech Cystobranchus virginicus. We identified distended specimens of C. virginicus in the nests of at least 4 different fish species: Campostoma anomalum, Moxostoma carinatum, Moxostoma sp. (either M. anisurum and/or M. breviceps), and Nocomis leptocephalus. We collected a total of 41 leeches from the nests of these host species and documented at least 1 leech in 19 of 55 nests (35%), with many sites containing multiple leeches. Individuals of C. virginicus were not identified feeding on any of the 41 adult specimens of Moxostoma spp. or the 635 adult specimens of Nocomis leptocephalus examined, and were never found in the absence of active host spawning (26 sites). These results are consistent with individuals of C. virginicus being an opportunistic or possibly even an obligate egg‐feeder, potentially timing their own reproductive activities with the spawning of their fish hosts. The current distribution of C. virginicus has been expanded to include North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The potential for leech species to induce mortality in developing fish eggs could be a concern for fish conservation and merits further investigation.  相似文献

We postulated that dietary ingestion of vitamin D may be used by some Alaskan Arctic marine mammal species in addition to, or instead of, cutaneous production to meet nutritional requirements. Zooplankton (n=5) sampled near Kaktovik, Alaska, contained no measurable vitamin D2 or D3, but did contain provitamin D (7‐dehydrocholesterol), the cutaneous precursor for previtamin D3 in mammals. Fillets and livers from five fish species were sampled near Barrow, Alaska, and evaluated for vitamin D3 content (no vitamin D2 was detected). Differences in vitamin D3 content appeared significant (P≤0.10) among fish livers (Kruskal‐Wallis [H test]=8.25, df=4, P=0.08) and among fish fillets (H=7.80, df=4, P=0.01). We also found significant differences in several pairwise comparisons (Mann‐Whitney U‐test) of vitamin D3 levels in fillets and livers. Blubber from six species of marine mammals had no detectable vitamin D2. The H test results for blubber vitamin D3 concentration were highly significant: 28.12, df=5, P<0.001. There were also significant differences in vitamin D3 content from blubber in pairwise comparisons of primarily invertebrate feeders (bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) [mean=4.20 SD±1.10 ng/g], and Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) [5.43±2.82 ng/g]) vs. primarily piscivorous feeders (ringed seal (Phoca hispida) [746.57±493.00 ng/g] and beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) [426.00±174.92 ng/g]) and a semiaquatic terrestrial carnivore (polar bear (Ursus maritimus) [406.17±311.70 ng/g]). The bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus) had intermediate blubber vitamin D3 concentration (156.83±139.25 ng/g), which may reflect an intermediate‐type feeding strategy or an artifact of the small sample size. Summary In terms of species number (47) and numerical abundance, blennioids are the most important primary resident rocky reef fishes in the Gulf of California, Mexico. We present the feeding patterns of the 34 most abundant species of blennioid fishes, 8 of which are Gulf endemics. A total of 2,144 specimens were sampled at 51 anaesthetic stations in 9 areas throughout the Gulf. Four feeding guilds were distinguished: 1) The majority (29 of 34 species) are microcarnivores exhibiting a number of different feeding strategies (ambush and stalking predators, active foragers, pickers, etc.). The more important prey categories were mobile invertebrates, and to some extent also sedentary fauna. Algae were of no importance for most of the latter species. 2) Hypsoblennius brevipinnis and H. gentilis are two omnivorous species, browsing mainly on sessile items including 52% and 13% (Vol.) algae in their diets. 3) Entomacrodus chiostictus and Ophioblennius steindachneri are herbivores, grazing on fine algae. 4) Plagiotremus azaleus specializes in cropping mucus and scales from the body surface of other fishes.Crustaceans account for 58.6% of the total volume of prey items in the 34 species investigated. Benthic amphipods were most important and made up 26% of the total volume of all prey items.Cluster analysis of percentage volumetric data using Squared Euclidian Distance and Horn's Index of Overlap produced distinct subgroups which coarsely reflected taxonomic grouping.The species are separated either by their geographic ranges, habitat and microhabitat preferences, feeding, or a combination thereof. Only rarely do sympatric species significantly overlap in diet.Trophic diversity as measured by the Shannon-index provides a tool for distinguishing: 1) specialists (6 species) from 2) low diversity feeders (18 species) and 3) high diversity generalists (10 species). Two different types of specialists can be distinguished: those which feed on the same items as the generalists but utilize only a very restricted prey spectrum (Stathmonotus sinuscalifornici and the chaenopsids Chaenopsis alepidota and Emblemaria hypacanthus). A second group of specialists (Entomacrodus chiostictus and Ophioblennius steindachneri as well as Plagiotremus azaleus) feed on items not utilized by any of the generalists.There is some evidence that high diversity generalists are numerically more abundant than the other trophic groups.In the labrisomids and blenniids a phylogenetic trend from microcarnivory towards feeding on sessile items appears to be expressed.  相似文献

The three most abundant and species-rich genera of erpobdellid leeches – Erpobdella, Dina and Trocheta – have traditionally been distinguished by their annulation pattern. Erpobdella has five unsubdivided annuli per somite, in Dina the last annulus is widened and subdivided once, and in Trocheta, the last and often also the first annulus is further subdivided. The last two genera are often referred to as the subfamily Trochetinae. The presented molecular phylogenetic analysis, based on mitochondrial 12S rDNA sequences and nuclear ITS2 sequences, has revealed a sister relationship between Trocheta and Erpobdella rather than between Trocheta and Dina. Furthermore, the annulation pattern has proved to be inappropriate for the diagnosis of Dina and Trocheta. The taxon Trocheta bykowskii krasensehas been classified on the basis of its Trocheta-like annulation; however, according to the molecular phylogeny, it belongs to the Dina clade. A pair of diagnostic PCR primers were developed to identify unambiguously individuals with intermediate annulation. In summary, (1) the traditional genus diagnosis of Dina and Trocheta is no longer tenable, and the genera are not always morphologically distinguishable by traditional characters; (2) T. b. krasense Sket, 1968, should be re-classified as Dina krasensis; (3) the subfamily Trochetinae should be annulled because it does not represent a monophyletic assemblage.  相似文献

An investigation of some factors which influence physiological colour changes in 16 species of freshwater and marine leeches, representing the four major families, was carried out. The emphasis was on the freshwater glossiphoniid Theromyzon tessulatum (O. F. Müller, 1774) and on the marine piscicolid Calliobdella carolinensis Sawyer & Chamberlain, 1972. The individual chromatophores were assessed using the Hogben & Slome (1931) chromatophore index. Light has a profound effect on colour change in some leeches. They darken in the light and lighten in the dark. Leeches do not adapt to background. Temperature plays only a minor role in the colour change process in leeches. Its effect may differ from species to species. The colour change response normally takes about 15–30 minutes or longer. A series of ligation and ventral nerve cord transection experiments, primarily on C. carolinensis, demonstrates that the nervous system is intimately involved in the colour change process in at least some leeches. Participation by the nervous system in the colour change response is probably via a neurohumoral mechanism. In the Hirudinea physiological colour change occurs only in certain species of the Piscicolidae and the Glossiphoniidae. Physiological colour change probably evolved de novo in the rhynchobdellid leeches.  相似文献

Polyploidy, the multiplication of entire setsof chromosomes beyond the normal set of two,has occurred extensively, independently, and isoften repeated in many groups of fish, from thesharks to the higher teleosts. While there areseveral ways that a polyploid fish can develop,environmental change and hybrid stabilizationmay play a large role in the initiation of anew polyploid species. Despite its prevalence,the importance of polyploidy in the evolutionof the fishes is unclear. Polyploidy is morecommon in the lower teleosts than the higherteleosts, possibly due to an advantage gainedthrough decreased specialization in the lowerteleosts, a decreased viability of polyploidyin the higher fish, or both. Polyploid fishcould gain an advantage over diploid fishthrough increased heterozygosity, divergence ofduplicate genes, and/or increased expression ofkey physiological proteins. While polyploidfish do not differ considerably from diploidsphenotypically, they may be at a disadvantage,or certain advantages may be lessened due to anoverall decrease in cell number. This papersummarizes all polyploid species of fish knownto-date, and discusses the possible roles andpathways for establishment of polyploidy in theevolution of the fishes.  相似文献

Studies of adaptive evolution have experienced a recent revival in population genetics of natural populations and there is currently much focus on identifying genomic signatures of selection in space and time. Insights into local adaptation, adaptive response to global change and evolutionary consequences of selective harvesting can be generated through population genomics studies, allowing the separation of the effects invoked by neutral processes (drift-migration) from those due to selection. Such knowledge is important not only for improving our basic understanding of natural as well as human-induced evolutionary processes, but also for predicting future trajectories of biodiversity and for setting conservation priorities. Marine fishes possess a number of features rendering them well suited for providing general insights into adaptive genomic evolution in natural populations. These include well-described population structures, substantial and rapidly developing genomic resources and abundant archived samples enabling temporal studies. Furthermore, superior possibilities for conducting large-scale experiments under controlled conditions, due to the economic resources provided by the large and growing aquaculture industry, hold great promise for utilizing recent technological developments. Here, we review achievements in marine fish genomics to date and highlight potential avenues for future research, which will provide both general insights into evolution in high gene flow species, as well as specific knowledge which can lead to improved management of marine organisms.  相似文献

Aim The distributional patterns of helminthological fauna of freshwater fishes were analysed to postulate a general hypothesis on the relationships of some Mexican hydrological systems. Location Eight hydrological systems of central and eastern Mexico were studied and compared with records from Nicaragua. Methods A Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE) was applied to the presence/absence of ninety‐two helminth parasite taxa (Monogeneans, Digeneans, Cestodes, Acanthocephalans and Nematodes) of freshwater fishes, from eight Mexican hydrological systems, using the Hennig86 program. Results The results represent the first attempt for a biogeographical analysis through application of the PAE method to the distributional patterns of helminth parasites of freshwater fishes in Mexico. A single most parsimonious cladogram was obtained, which grouped all the Neotropical systems in accordance with previous proposals based on other plant and animal taxa. Main conclusions The most basal systems were Santiago and Lerma basins, which exhibited Nearctic affinities. The remaining areas of the cladogram showed Neotropical affinities. All the southeastern systems were grouped in a clade with the Nicaragua system, providing support for a ‘Mesoamerican province’ based on helminth parasites of cichlids. The cladogram also suggests that the treatment of the Lerma‐Santiago basin as a single biogeographical unit is inaccurate and that they should be treated as separate systems.  相似文献

The rate of emergence of micropredatory gnathiid isopods from the benthos, the proportion of emerging gnathiids potentially eaten by Labroides dimidiatus, and the volume of blood that gnathiids potentially remove from fishes (using gnathiid gut volume) were determined. The abundance (mean ±s.e .) of emerging gnathiids was 41·7 ± 6·9 m?2 day?1 and 4552 ± 2632 reef?1 day?1 (reefs 91–125 m2). The abundance of emerging gnathiids per fish on the reef was 4·9 ± 0·8 day?1; but excluding the rarely infested pomacentrid fishes, it was 20·9 ± 3·8 day?1. The abundance of emerging gnathiids per patch reef was 66 ± 17% of the number of gnathiids that all adult L. dimidiatus per reef eat daily while engaged in cleaning behaviour. If all infesting gnathiids subsequently fed on fish blood, their total gut volume per reef area would be 17·4 ± 5·6 mm3 m?2 day?1; and per fish on the reefs, it would be 2·3 ± 0·5 mm?3 fish?1 day?1 and 10·3 ± 3·1 mm3 fish?1 day?1 (excluding pomacentrids). The total gut volume of gnathiids infesting caged (137 mm standard length, LS) and removed from wild (100–150 mm LS) Hemigymnus melapterus by L. dimidiatus was 26·4 ± 24·6 mm3 day?1 and 53·0 ± 9·6 mm3 day?1, respectively. Using H. melapterus (137 mm LS, 83 g) as a model, gnathiids had the potential to remove, 0·07, 0·32, 0·82 and 1·63% of the total blood volume per day of each fish, excluding pomacentrids, caged H. melapterus and wild H. melapterus, respectively. In contrast, emerging gnathiids had the potential of removing 155% of the total blood volume of Acanthochromis polyacanthus (10·7 mm LS, 0·038 g) juveniles. That L. dimidiatus eat more gnathiids per reef daily than were sampled with emergence traps suggests that cleaner fishes are an important source of mortality for gnathiids. Although the proportion of the total blood volume of fishes potentially removed by blood‐feeding gnathiids on a daily basis appeared to be low for fishes weighing 83 g, the cumulative effects of repeated infections on the health of such fish remains unknown; attacks on small juvenile fishes, may result in possibly lethal levels of blood loss.  相似文献

A study of well over one thousand specimens provided proof to put the conspecifity of the two supposed species originally described asHelobdella tricarinata andClepsine nilotica beyond all doubt. Evidence is presented which indicates that the striking changes in body-shape and drastic alteration in the appearance of the tuberculation at different stages of reproduction and nutrition combined with individual variation in tuberculation, annulation, and in the arrangement and pigmentation of the eyes were responsible for earlier confusion as to the identity of this species. Since the early accounts were incomplete and contained some important errorsBatracobdelloides tricarinata is redescribed and, for the first time, comprehensively figured.  相似文献
