A Monte Carlo method for Bayesian inference in frailty models   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
D G Clayton 《Biometrics》1991,47(2):467-485
Many analyses in epidemiological and prognostic studies and in studies of event history data require methods that allow for unobserved covariates or "frailties." Clayton and Cuzick (1985, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series A 148, 82-117) proposed a generalization of the proportional hazards model that implemented such random effects, but the proof of the asymptotic properties of the method remains elusive, and practical experience suggests that the likelihoods may be markedly nonquadratic. This paper sets out a Bayesian representation of the model in the spirit of Kalbfleisch (1978, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B 40, 214-221) and discusses inference using Monte Carlo methods.  相似文献

Endre Hógyes, one of the most prominent and internationally-renown leaders in the field of medical research, especially the treatment of rabies, was born one hundred and fifty years ago in Hungary. E. Hógyes had started his medical and research carrier in 1870. In 1889 he had become vice-president of the Royal Hungarian Society of Natural Sciences and was elected as a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) and that member of the National Council of Public Health. Scientific carrier of E. Hógyes has always been closely linked to physiological sciences. E Hógyes made a significant contribution to different areas of physiological sciences; his most important scientific publications in this field deal with renal physiology, respitary mechanics, cerebellar function, and associated eye movement. Endre Hógyes was the first to organize Hungarian physiologists into a community. The "Special Physiological Conferences" were initiated within the Hungarian Royal Society of Natural Sciences in 1891. As a token of appretiation, Hungarian physiologists and other medical professionals have announced the year of 1997 as a memorial year of Dr. Endre Hógyes.  相似文献

Analysis of variance tables based on experimental structure   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
C J Brien 《Biometrics》1983,39(1):53-59
A stepwise procedure for obtaining the experimental structure for a particular experiment is presented together with rules for deriving the analysis-of-variance table from that structure. The procedure involves the division of the factors into groups and is essentially a generalization of the method of Nelder (1965, Proceedings of the Royal Society, Series A 283, 147-162; 1965, Proceedings of the Royal Society, Series A 283, 163-178), to what are termed 'multi-tiered' experiments. The proposed method is illustrated for a wine-tasting experiment.  相似文献

We summarize the reviews and research papers submitted by speakers at a discussion meeting on Synaptic Plasticity in Health and Disease held at the Royal Society, London on 2–3 December 2013, and a subsequent satellite meeting convened at the Royal Society/Kavli Centre at Chicheley Hall on 4–5 December 2013. Together, these contributions give an overview of current research and controversies in a vibrant branch of neuroscience with important implications for the understanding of many forms of learning and memory, and a wide spectrum of neurological and cognitive disorders.  相似文献

The passing of Jack Heslop-Harrison marks the end of an outstandinginternational scientific career and represents the loss of adistinguished contemporary British botanist. British by birthand by acclaim in that he held Fellowships of the Royal Societyand the Royal Society of Edinburgh, together with Membershipof the Royal Irish Academy. International, in so far as hismany career appointments were divided between Great Britainand the United States and involved scientific colleagues frommany nations.Copyright 1998 Annals of Botany Company.  相似文献

L. H. Bailey cited Mendel's 1865 and 1869 papers in the bibliography that accompanied his 1892 paper, Cross-Breeding and Hybridizing, and Mendel is mentioned once in the 1895 edition of Bailey's "Plant-Breeding." Bailey claimed to have copied his 1892 references to Mendel from Focke. It seems, however, that while he may have first encountered references to Mendel's work in Focke, he actually copied them from the Royal Society "Catalogue of Scientific Papers." Bailey also saw a reference to Mendel's 1865 paper in Jackson's "Guide to the Literature of Botany." Bailey's 1895 mention of Mendel occurs in a passage he translated from Focke's "Die Pflanzen-Mischlinge."  相似文献

This editorial note presents the journal initiative to celebrate the Malariology Centenary. It includes the reprint of the first annual report of the Society for Malaria Studies (founded in 1898), presented by Angelo Celli on December 3rd, 1898, to the first meeting of the Society and published in the Journal of the Royal Italian Society of Hygiene (volume 20, issue 12, 31st December 1898). The text is followed by explanatory footnotes and relevant references. An exhaustive historical essai, including the english version of the Celli's report, is scheduled to appear as supplement to volume 41, and the same volume will host the contributions issued from the international conference. "The malaria challenge after one hundred years of malariology", held in Roma at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei on November 16-19, 1998.  相似文献

The abundance and diversity of insects was the subject of the joint commemorative meeting between the Linnean Society and the Royal Entomological Society of London. This paper gives a brief outline of the foundation and early history of the Entomological Society and its forerunners, and its relations with the Linnean Society at the time. It also shows how the contributions of the founding fellows of the Society, whose interests originated in collecting and insect natural history, laid the foundations of many of the present day fields of entomological research.  相似文献

Vaccines have made a major contribution to global health in recent decades but they could do much more. In November 2011, a Royal Society discussion meeting, 'New vaccines for global health', was held in London to discuss the past contribution of vaccines to global health and to consider what more could be expected in the future. Papers presented at the meeting reviewed recent successes in the deployment of vaccines against major infections of childhood and the challenges faced in developing vaccines against some of the world's remaining major infectious diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), malaria and tuberculosis. The important contribution that development of more effective veterinary vaccines could make to global health was also addressed. Some of the social and financial challenges to the development and deployment of new vaccines were reviewed. The latter issues were also discussed at a subsequent satellite meeting, 'Accelerating vaccine development', held at the Kavli Royal Society International Centre. Delegates at this meeting considered challenges to the more rapid development and deployment of both human and veterinary vaccines and how these might be addressed. Papers based on presentations at the discussion meeting and a summary of the main conclusions of the satellite meeting are included in this issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.  相似文献

Summary The histochemical demonstration of the activities of proteases, based in the majority of cases on the use of discriminating synthetic substrates (aminoacyl or peptidyl derivatives of 4-methoxy-2-naphthylamine [MNA]), has proved very valuable in pathology. Its importance is illustrated by three topics investigated in our laboratory, namely lymphocytes, malabsorption syndrome and atherosclerosis.Presented at a Symposium on Proteases and Peptidases on 13 July, 1984 in London by invitation of the Histochemistry and Cytochemistry Section of the Royal Microscopical Society.  相似文献
