Zooplankton associations in six crater lakes have been compared by means of indices of similarity and diversity, and by k -dominance curves. The lakes covered a wide range of salinities and vegetational characteristics.
The total number of species identified were: Protozoa, 34; Rotifera, 48; Gastrotricha, 7; Crustacea, 24; and Chaoborus larvae, 2; giving an overall total of 115. The numbers of zooplankton species in each lake varied from 68, in a richly vegetated fresh crater lake in Arizona, to one in a highly saline lake in New Mexico.
Testate rhizopods and gastrotrichs were not found in the more saline lakes. A comparison of the rotifer associations with those of crater lakes in other parts of the world shows that there is a general tendency for a reduction in the total number of species when the conductivity rises above 400 μS cm−1 20°C, and when the conductivity reaches 10,000 μS cm−1 20°C the number of rotifer species is usually reduced to two. The two species found at high salinities show some variation in different parts of the world, but generally include species of Brachionus and Hexarthra.
There is a general tendency for the number of rotifer species in a crater lake to increase with increasing vegetation, at least up to the stage where there is a dense, zoned vegetation, and before a complete mosaic of vegetation covers the lake.  相似文献

The timing of spawning of perch was examined in four acidified lakes (pH 4.4–4.8) and in one circum-neutral lake (pH 6.3) in southern Finland in spring 1987. In three of the lakes, perch started to spawn soon after the ice melt (4–14 degree days > 5° C) and had spawned by the end of May at about 100 degree days > 5° C. In the two most acidified lakes, fish started to spawn later, at 35 and 60 degree days > 5° C, and had spawned in early June, at about 200 degree days > 5° C. The maturing of gonad products was delayed in both males and females.  相似文献

Abstract  Cabomba caroliniana is a submerged aquatic plant from South America that is becoming a serious weed worldwide. It spreads by seed and by fragmentation and has an extremely wide climatic range, invading lakes and ponds from tropical (Darwin, Australia: latitude 12°) to cold temperate regions (Peterborough, Canada: latitude 45°). There are currently no effective methods of managing cabomba infestations and funding has been allocated to research biological methods. Surveys have examined cabomba in its native range and have identified several potential biological control agents. The most promising are a stem boring weevil ( Hydrotimetes natans ) and an aquatic moth ( Paracles spp.). Here we predict the change in cabomba populations after the introduction of the biological control agents. Our predictions are based on quantitative surveys of cabomba populations at three lakes in south-east Queensland, qualitative observations of cabomba in its native range, and conceptual knowledge of how the realised niche of cabomba might be affected by herbivore damage.  相似文献

The stomato cysts of Mallomonas hamata and M. heterospina are described from lakes in South Sweden. These Mallomonas species develop cysts of similar appearance, size and form. Cyst formation for Mallomonas hamata was recorded at temperature 10–11°C and pH 5.9 and for M. heterospina at temperatures 4.2–11°C and pH 7.4. The cysts of M. hamata and M. heterospina are ovoid and easy to recognize, even with light microscopy, but difficult to distinguish from another. Thus their value as paleoindicators is limited, even if the two species have preference for waters of different nutrient and pH status.  相似文献

Marine lakes in the Palau Islands are known to harbor unique marine fauna that have remained isolated since the formation of the lakes after the Last Glacial Maximum. We analyzed mussels from marine lakes located on different islands and conducted morphological, phylogenetic and population genetic characterization to clarify their evolutionary history. The mussels were morphologically classified into three differentiated morphs: NS, ON, and MC. Their common characteristics were consistent with the Brachidontes-Hormomya complex of the Mytilidae family. Phylogenetic analysis based on the nuclear 18S ribosomal RNA gene supported the taxonomic position of the mussels among the Mytilidae. In the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene lineage, NS-and MC-morphs were highly diverged from each other; their estimated time of divergence dates back to the mid-Pleistocene. ON-morph was more closely related to MC-morph, although the shell morphologies of ON- and MC-morphs were easily distinguishable. Population genetic analysis revealed the coexistence of highly diverged haplotypes within a population of ON-morph, indicating introgression of mtDNA among the morphs. Our data suggest that morphological differentiation of marine lake mussels can occur in a relatively short period under different environmental conditions. Thus, the marine lakes provide a unique site for the study of diversification in mussels.  相似文献

During the last two decades the nutrient loading to Danish lakes has been reduced with the aim to improve water quality. However, because of internal P-loading and biological resistance, the expected improvement has been delayed. Therefore, to reduce the duration of the recovery period and to accelerate recolonisation of submerged macrophytes, several lakes have been biomanipulated with the purpose of improving the top-down control by zooplankton. To elucidate the effects of these measures, we undertook an analysis of data on submerged macrophytes monitored annually in 17 lakes for 8 years. The results obtained show that the macrophyte coverage in non-biomanipulated lakes remained relatively stable following the external nutrient reduction. However, a small increase in macrophyte coverage occurred in a few lakes. In two of the four biomanipulated lakes, in contrast, macrophyte coverage increased from 0 up to 80% within 2–4 years following manipulation. In the other two lakes macrophyte colonisation failed. However, in lakes with a successful recolonisation, large inter-annual variations in macrophyte coverage, varying between 2 and 80% among growth seasons, occurred. We conclude that the potential of macrophyte recolonisation after nutrient loading reduction on the short term is higher in biomanipulated lakes than in lakes subjected to loading reduction only, although biomanipulation does not provide a guarantee for macrophyte recolonisation or a stable macrophyte community when colonisation occurs.

Aim  There is no previous direct evidence for the occurrence of lacustrine refuges for invertebrate fauna in Antarctica spanning the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). In the absence of verified LGM lacustrine refuges many species are believed to result from Holocene dispersal from sub-Antarctic islands and continents further north. If freshwater lake environments were present throughout the LGM, extant freshwater species may have been associated with Antarctica prior to this glacial period. This study looked at faunal microfossils in a sediment core from an Antarctic freshwater lake. This lake is unusual in that, unlike most Antarctic lakes, the sediment record extends to c . 130,000 yr bp , i.e. prior to the LGM.
Location  Lake Reid, Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica (76°23' E; 69°23' S).
Methods  Palaeofaunal communities in Lake Reid were identified through examination of faunal microfossils in a sediment core that extended to c . 130,000 yr bp .
Results  Ephippia and mandibles from the cladoceran Daphniopsis studeri and loricae of the rotifer Notholca sp. were found at all depths in the sediment, indicating that these two species have been present in the lake for up to 130,000 years. Copepod mandibles were also present in the older section of the core, yet were absent from the most recent sediments, indicating extinction of this species from Lake Reid during the LGM.
Main conclusion  The presence of D. studeri and Notholca sp. microfossils throughout the entire Lake Reid core is the first direct evidence of a glacial lacustrine refugium for invertebrate animals in Antarctica, and indicates the presence of a relict fauna on the Antarctic continent.  相似文献

The surface sediment diatom analysis of 28 Algoma lakes (pH 4.40–8.13) indicates that even though each lake has a widely different aquatic environment and characteristic diatom assemblage, a definite relationship exists between the lake water pH and their diatom assemblages. In the acidic lakes acidobiontic and acidophilous diatom species predominate whereas in circumneutral and alkaline lakes circumneutral and alkaliphilous diatoms were most common. Cluster analysis of the pH indicator diatom assemblages grouped the study lakes into three distinct cluster groups. These groups also closely corresponded to lake water pH. On the basis of published ecological information as well as their presence in our study lakes, the pH indicator status of a number of diatom taxa have been discussed. A detailed listing of the diatom taxa identified and their pH indicator status is provided in order to facilitate their use in future diatom-inferred pH studies.  相似文献

Antarctic subglacial lakes have, over the past few years, been hypothesised to house unique forms of life and hold detailed sedimentary records of past climate change. Testing this hypothesis requires in situ examinations. The direct measurement of subglacial lakes has been considered ever since the largest and best-known lake, named Lake Vostok, was identified as having a deep water-column. The Subglacial Antarctic Lake Environments (SALE) programme, set up by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) to oversee subglacial lakes research, state that prior exploration of smaller lakes would be a “prudent way forward”. Over 145 subglacial lakes are known to exist in Antarctica, but one lake in West Antarctica, officially named Ellsworth Subglacial Lake (referred to hereafter as Lake Ellsworth), stands out as a candidate for early exploration. A consortium of over 20 scientists from seven countries and 14 institutions has been assembled to plan the exploration of Lake Ellsworth. An eight-year programme is envisaged: 3 years for a geophysical survey, 2 years for equipment development and testing, 1 year for field planning and operation, and 2 years for sample analysis and data interpretation. The science experiment is simple in concept but complex in execution. Lake Ellsworth will be accessed using hot water drilling. Once lake access is achieved, a probe will be lowered down the borehole and into the lake. The probe will contain a series of instruments to measure biological, chemical and physical characteristics of the lake water and sediments, and will utilise a tether to the ice surface through which power, communication and data will be transmitted. The probe will pass through the water column to the lake floor. The probe will then be pulled up and out of the lake, measuring its environment continually as this is done. Once at the ice surface, any water samples collected will be taken from the probe for laboratory analysis (to take place over subsequent years). The duration of the science mission, from deployment of the probe to its retrieval, is likely to take between 24 and 36 h. Measurements to be taken by the probe will provide data about the following: depth, pressure, conductivity and temperature; pH levels; biomolecules (using life marker chips); anions (using a chemical analyzer); visualisation of the environment (using cameras and light sources); dissolved gases (using chromatography); and morphology of the lake floor and sediment structures (using sonar). After the probe has been retrieved, a sediment corer may be dropped into the lake to recover material from the lake floor. Finally, if time permits, a thermistor string may be left in the lake water to take time-dependent measurements of the lake’s water column over subsequent years. Given that the comprehensive geophysical survey of the lake will take place in two seasons during 2007–2009, a two-year instrument and logistic development phase from 2008 (after the lake’s bathymetry has been assessed) makes it possible that the exploration of Lake Ellsworth could take place at the beginning of the next decade.  相似文献

Phytoplankton assemblages were studied during autumn 1998 in oligo-, meso- and eutrophic lakes in central Sweden (62°54'N). Differences in phytoplankton assemblages have been detected both in space and time. In eutrophic lakes coccoid Chlorophyceae dominated quantitatively during September and October. Diatoms were the most diverse group in all types of lakes in September and in meso- and oligotrophic lakes in October. In November Cryptophyceae became the most abundant group in all lakes. The total richness of species decreased in the meso- and oligotrophic environments in November compared to September and October, whilst in the eutrophic environment it remained almost unchanged. Cluster analyses, using both presence-absence and presence-absence in combination with abundance matrices, showed similar results and a good resolution between the lakes of different eutrophication conditions. We conclude that the phytoplankton assemblages of the lakes studied depended on the trophic conditions and thus they can be used for resolution between different eutrophication levels.  相似文献

The European whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus, widely distributed in freshwater of northern Europe and introduced into the major lakes of northern Italy, has been restocked in central Italian lakes. In accordance with current managing practices, a reduced number of spawners contribute to reproduction within each lake and a certain degree of isolation is to be expected between populations from different lakes, resulting in the rapid fixing of chromosomal changes. A detailed survey of three populations from different lakes was carried out using classical and molecular cytogenetic techniques, to verify if specific chromosomal markers are present in the distinct populations. The comparative analysis revealed intraspecific variability of NORs and fixed differences in their number in the three populations. A co-localization of major and minor rRNA genes on one chromosome site was also observed. The original data regarding the chromosome mapping of the (TTAGGG)(n) telomeric repeat obtained in this study, demonstrated their exclusively terminal distribution, and a conspicuous inter-chromosomal variation in the number of repeats. The results are compared with data available for populations from native geographic ranges.  相似文献

Synopsis We examined Minnesota’s muskellunge, Esox masquinongy, populations using various data sets including spring trap net assessments and angler diary surveys. We confronted a potentially problematic data set that had a large number of zero catches by fitting logistic models to the presence/absence data set and linear models to the subset of data that included catches with one fish or more. Currently, 105 lakes have been identified as muskellunge waters, of which 61 lakes have been created and maintained by stocking. Although the proportion of successful anglers has increased over time, catch rates have remained the same. It appears from analysis of trap net catches that the abundance of 102 cm (40 in) and larger muskellunge has been increasing over time. Both trap net and angler data provide some indications that size of muskellunge caught has also increased over time. Angler-harvested muskellunge averaged 11 years of age and 115 cm (45 in) total length. For Minnesota waters, muskellunge ultimate length averaged 134 cm (53 in) for females and 119 cm (47 in) for males. All evidence indicates a successful management program.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide production and oxygen uptake were measured in undisturbed sediment cores taken during winter from four lakes of different trophic state. Respiration was measured at 5, 10, 15 and 20°C at high oxygen saturation (75–100%). The respiratory quotient, calculated from the mean values of carbon dioxide production and oxygen uptake at each temperature for each lake, was 0.83–0.96 with a mean value for the four lakes of 0.90. At very low oxygen saturations (<10%) carbon dioxide production was 21–42% of the production at 20°C and high oxygen saturations. The results indicate that under aerobic conditions, oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production are closely-coupled processes in these lake sediments.  相似文献

Change in the trophic state of lakes is a topic of primary interest for limnologists and paleolimnologists, but also for governments in many countries. These changes can be the result of the natural evolution of lake ecosystems, but nowadays are most often connected with human activity influencing water bodies. In this article, we reconstruct changes in the lake productivity and trophic state in three dystrophic (humic) lakes located in Northern Poland. Sediments from these lakes, which are part of a national park, were submitted to Cladocera and chemical composition analyses. Currently, the trophic state of these lakes has been described based on the water's chemical composition, and they have been classified as undisturbed ecosystems with a stable trophic state. The main objective of this study was to evaluate whether these lakes have been stable and undisturbed ecosystems during the past centuries and therefore whether they can be classified as natural and pristine. The results of subfossil Cladocera analysis and sedimentary geochemical analysis confirmed the specific nature of studied lakes. However, our results were surprising and showed that during the last 200 years two of the three lakes have undergone distinct trophic changes, while one of them has barely changed at all.  相似文献

Concentrations of terrestrially derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) have been increasing in many north temperate and boreal lakes for over two decades. The concentration of DOM in lakes is influenced by a number of environmental factors, but there is still considerable debate about how the availability of terrestrial DOM, and associated dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus, may be affected by drivers of climatic change. Using experimental and observational methods, we considered how changes in soil temperature and moisture affected the composition of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus entering freshwater lakes. In our experiment, organic soil cores were collected from the wetland shoreline of a darkly-stained seepage lake in northern Wisconsin, USA and manipulated in laboratory with temperature and moisture treatments. During the 28-day study, soil leachate was sampled and analyzed for optical properties of DOM via UV/Vis absorbance, as well as concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total dissolved nitrogen, and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP). DOM optical properties were particularly sensitive to moisture, with drier scenarios resulting in DOM of lower molecular weight and aromaticity. Warmer temperatures led to lower DOC and TDP concentrations. To consider long-term relationships between climate and lake chemical properties, we analyzed long-term water chemistry data from two additional Wisconsin lakes from the long term ecological research (LTER) project in a cross correlation analysis with Palmer drought severity index data. Analysis of the LTER data supported our experimental results that soil moisture has a significant effect on the quality of DOM entering lakes and that climate may significantly affect lake chemical properties. Although unexpected in terms of DOM loading for climate change scenarios, these results are consistent with patterns of decomposition in organic soils and may be attributed to an increase in soil DOM processing.  相似文献

Grouped data for head and body mean-preferred temperature were 31.° C (range 28.9° -35.9° C) and 32.0° C (range 29.9° -35.6° C) respectively, and the differences were not significant. Grouped data for measn-voluntary maxima for the head and body were 34.4° C (range 31.4° -38.1° C) and 33.7° C (range 31.5° -38.5° C) respectively. A comparison of thermal preferenda and varying sized individuals of Alligator mississipiensis showed a direct relationship between size and preferred temperature. The most effective method of reducing head and body temperature was that of seeking shade; water would be effective, but in this study enough water for complete submersion was not available in the experimental enclosures. Gaping was observed several times during the study but had little effect on head temperature. Heating and cooling experiments conducted in constant temperatute water-baths demonstrated that a 49.9 kg alligator heated in 36.5% of the time it required to cool. The alligator shows a greater alteration in heating and cooling time than any other reptile studied.  相似文献

In lakes, benthic micro-algae and cyanobacteria (periphyton) can contribute significantly to total primary productivity and provide important food sources for benthic invertebrates. Despite recognition of their importance, few studies have explored the diversity of the algal and cyanobacterial composition of periphyton mats in temperate lakes. In this study, we sampled periphyton from three New Zealand lakes: Tikitapu (oligotrophic), ōkāreka (mesotrophic) and Rotoiti (eutrophic). Statistical analysis of morphological data showed a clear delineation in community structure among lakes and highlighted the importance of cyanobacteria. Automated rRNA intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA) and 16S rRNA gene clone libraries were used to investigate cyanobacterial diversity. Despite the close geographic proximity of the lakes, cyanobacterial species differed markedly. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis identified eight cyanobacterial OTUs. A comparison with other known cyanobacterial sequences in GenBank showed relatively low similarities (91-97%). Cyanotoxin analysis identified nodularin in all mats from Lake Tikitapu. ndaF gene sequences from these samples had very low (≤ 89%) homology to sequences in other known nodularin producers. To our knowledge, this is the first detection of nodularin in a freshwater environment in the absence of Nodularia. Six cyanobacteria species were isolated from Lake Tikitapu mats. None were found to produce nodularin. Five of the species shared low (< 97%) 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with other cultured cyanobacteria.  相似文献

1. The distributions of subfossil remains of chironomid larvae in 28 large, deep and stratified lakes in Europe were examined in surface sediments along a latitudinal transect ranging from northern Sweden to southern Italy. 2. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that summer surface water and July air temperature, as well as total phosphorus (TP) concentrations, hypolimnetic oxygen availability and conductivity were statistically significant (P < 0.05) explanatory variables explaining between 11 and 14% of the variance in the chironomid data. 3. Owing to the spatial scale covered by our study, many environmental variables were covarying. Temperature, TP concentration and oxygen availability were positively or negatively correlated with the first axis of a detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) of chironomid assemblages, suggesting that climatic and trophic conditions influenced profundal chironomid assemblages either in a direct (food and oxygen) or in an indirect (temperature) way. Parameters related to local environmental conditions, lake morphology and bedrock geology, such as organic matter content of the sediment, maximum lake depth, Secchi depth and pH, were not significant in explaining the distribution of chironomid assemblages in our study lakes. 4. The strong relationship between chironomid assemblages and summer temperature may be related to the covariation of temperature with parameters, such as nutrient and oxygen availability, known to affect chironomid assemblages in deep, stratified lakes. However, summer temperature explained a statistically significant proportion of the variance in the chironomid assemblages even when effects of oxygen availability and TP concentrations were partialled out. This suggests that summer temperature has an effect on chironomid assemblages in deep lakes, which is not related to its covariation with trophic state. 5. The potential of fossil chironomid analysis for quantitatively reconstructing past nutrient conditions in deep, stratified lakes was examined by calculating the Benthic Quality Index (BQI) based on subfossil chironomids and by comparing BQI values with observed TP concentrations. BQI was linearly related to log‐transformed TP. Applying this relationship to fossil chironomid assemblages from Lake Päijänne (Finland) produced a TP reconstruction in agreement with measured TP during the period 1970–1990, demonstrating that this approach can provide quantitative estimates of past nutrient concentrations in deep, stratified lakes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Coimbatore is one of the industrial cities in Tamil Nadu, India, which has been experiencing rapid urbanization and population growth. Coimbatore is also known for its unique freshwater lakes environment and serves as a rich ecosystem. However, the assessment of heavy metal levels in aquatic environments is limited. This study was aimed to investigate physicochemical parameters, heavy metals level and sources, and ecotoxicity in sediments collected from five different lakes in Coimbatore. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in sediments were determined by Inductive Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Hg level was measured using Advanced Mercury Analyzer (AMA). The determined heavy metal concentrations in sediments varied significantly according to the lake location and consistent with local human linked anthropogenic activities. The metal concentrations in urban lakes were exceeding both the Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) and the probable effect levels” (PELs) mostly; e.g., in sediments from the Lake Ukkadam, the values of 5.08 and 203.32 mg kg-1 dry weight were observed for Hg and Cu, respectively. The ecotoxicity test with ostracods exposed to the sediment samples revealed that mortality ranged between 6 and 23% for countryside lakes and 28 and 88% for the lakes within urban Zone. We used Spearman rank-order correlation and Principal components analysis (PCA) to assess the sources of pollutants and if they related to anthropogenic pressure and eutrophication of lakes. The main sources of heavy metals from studied lakes differed significantly. Urban and industrial effluents were dominant sources in urban lakes. Agricultural runoff, domestic wastes, and natural weathering were responsible for the metal sources in country lakes. This study provides baseline information on the heavy metal pollution status of sediments in the freshwater lakes in Coimbatore, which will be useful for pollution control measures to prevent possible metal sources on these lakes and impose appropriate management practices and continuous monitoring by relevant authorities.  相似文献
