Ovarian cycles and the pattern of reproduction in female black-tailed deer in British Columbia were ascertained largely through examination of the ovaries from 444 females. Cyclic development and degeneration of single follicles of ovulatory size occurred several weeks before first ovulation. As the breeding season approached, a second or third large follicle developed in each cycle but in 48% of adult females the follicles were at different stages of maturation. Those failing to rupture at first ovulation luteinized 1 to 2 days thereafter. The first ovulation of the season, in November, never resulted in a lasting pregnancy even though some ova were penetrated by spermatozoa and began to cleave. First ovulation was apparently 'silent' in five of seven females for their ova lacked spermatozoa. Of sixty-one pregnant females, fifty-nine conceived at second ovulation; the other two conceived at subsequent ovulations more widely spaced than the 8- to 9-day interval between first and second ovulations. The synchrony of ovulatory cycles among adult females was such that half of them ovulated for the second time in a span of 7 or 8 days. Primary CL that formed after first ovulation grew to an average maximum volume of only about 45 mm3, whereas those originating at second ovulation grew to twice that size within 5 to 8 days. First generation CL shrank from 35 mm3 to 10 mm3 within 2 days. They disappeared within 18 months but corpora albicantia persisted for the life of the female. The possible ecological significance of the reproductive pattern is discussed.  相似文献

The factors influencing the egg size of the Red-billed Gull Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus were studied at Kaikoura, New Zealand, between 1964 and 1972. In two- and three-egg clutches there was a trend for the eggs to become smaller in the sequence of laying. Length, breadth and volume of eggs of one-, two- and three-egg clutches declined significantly as the season progressed. The size of eggs from single-egg clutches tended to be smaller than eggs from two-egg clutches laid at the same time. There were correlations between the proportions of one-egg and of three-egg clutches being laid at a given period and the mean egg volume of two-egg clutches. When the mean egg volume of two-egg clutches increased there was a corresponding increase in the proportion of two- and three-egg clutches laid. When the mean egg volume of two-egg clutches decreased there was an increase in the proportion of single-egg clutches laid. The egg size of the Red-billed Gull showed no direct correlation with the abundance or availability of food; the largest eggs were produced early in the season when food was in short supply. In spite of an increase in the food supply in the middle of the breeding season, birds laying at this time produced smaller eggs than birds which laid earlier in the season. However, early breeders which relayed at the peak in food abundance on average produced a larger replacement clutch than originals laid early in the season. It is suggested that the birds nesting early in the season are able to produce the largest eggs because they are the most efficient foragers for food, and those which nest later in the season produce smaller eggs, even at peak food abundance, because of their inefficiency or inexperience. Early breeders laying replacement clutches tended to lay larger eggs and larger clutches than birds which are producing their first clutches at the same time. Two-year-old females laid eggs which were significantly shorter than older aged birds while the breadth and volume of the egg increased with the age of the female up to the fifth year. There was a trend for females to lay larger eggs when mated with older rather than younger males. No statistical differences in egg size were detected between females changing or retaining the partner of the previous season. Female body weight and egg volume were positively correlated in females weighing less than 275 g but not for heavier females. It is suggested that the seasonal decline in egg size and clutch size results from a decrease in the availability of food and the ability of the individual to exploit the resource.  相似文献

Hatching success, egg incubation, emergence and hatchling characteristics were assessed for 44 naturally incubating nests of Testudo graeca in south-western Spain. Nest predation rate was 4.5% and overall hatching success was 82.4%. Incubation periods ranged from 78 to 114 days, and hatchlings delayed emergence from the nest from one to 23 days. Emergences occurred from mid August to late September, and were not correlated with nesting dates, but earlier laid nests had longer incubation times, which was probably owing to lower temperatures experienced by clutches laid at the beginning of the nesting season. Variance of hatchling body size and mass was high and was mainly influenced by the gravid female. Mean straight carapace length was 34.14mm, and mean body mass 10.8g. Hatchlings from clutches laid last in the nesting season had significantly better physical condition. Hatchling mass was positively correlated with egg mass, and both variables were positively correlated with emergence date. Both better physical condition and relatively late emergence may confer advantages to hatchlings in the face of unfavourable environmental conditions in autumn.  相似文献

We describe the gonadal and abdominal fat storage cycles for a population of Caiman crocodilus fuscus kept in captivity at a breeding farm. The reproductive cycles of males and females are clearly seasonal. Vitellogenic follicles were observed in females year‐round; however, the follicular growth that produces the preovulatory follicles for the breeding season occurs in November–May (most of the dry season to the beginning of the rainy season). These months correspond with the presence of physiologically reproductive males. Oviposition takes place during the wet season (April–August) and the births occur at the end of this season (September–November). Fat storage was not related to reproductive activity, and did not vary by month or between sexes. Although environmental and hormonal conditions have been improved for these captive animals, they maintain a strongly seasonal reproductive cycle, historically fixed to oviposit in the most favorable period for nest construction and hatching during the rainy season. The influence of egg size and composition on the size, quality and survival of lapwing chicks was examined on two farmland study sites in the Midland Valley of Scotland. Eggs comprised 33.1% yolk, 61.3% albumen and 5.6% shell. Whereas the yolk and shell proportions decreased with increasing egg size, the albumen proportion increased. Most variation in egg size was attributable to differences between females but was also influenced by clutch number (eggs in replacement clutches on the rough grazing, but not the arable, site were smaller), clutch size (eggs were smaller in smaller clutches), maternal body condition (females in good condition produced larger eggs) and habitat (since females on the arable site fed more successfully, they were in better condition and laid larger eggs). Chick size, weight and survival were all influenced by egg size. The incubation period varied between 21 and 28 days (mean = 25.2) and was shorter in clutches laid later in the season.  相似文献

This paper presents data on aspects of the reproductive ecology of a population of Podarcis bocagei in northwestern Spain, as monitored over a two-year period (1990–1991) Data were obtained principally on the basis of mark-recapture experiments, but also from laboratory hatching studies Mating took place between the end of March and July During the laying period, from May to July, 8 5% of reproductive females produced three clutches, 52 1% two clutches, and 39 4% one clutch In general, single clutches were produced by small females Only a small proportion of large females produced three clutches Mean clutch size was 4 8 eggs (range 4–7) in May, 4 3 (2–6) in June and 3 9 (2–4) in July There was sigmficant variation in the mean snout-to-vent length (SVL) of females laying in each month of the season Both clutch size and mean single-egg volume increased with mother's SVL There was a significant partial correlation between egg volume and clutch size when both mother's SVL and month of laying were held constant There was no significant between-year variation in clutch size, breeding females' SVL, egg weight or relative clutch mass A delay in the timing of reproductive events in one year (1991) is attributable to adverse weather conditions during early spring Hatching occurred between July and September Hatch success (as estimated in 1989, 1990 and 1991 from natural nests at the study site) was high, ranging from 83% in 1991 to 91% in 1989 The mean SVL of female hatchlings was greater than that of male hatchlings By contrast, adult females had lower mean SVL than adult males  相似文献

Rhesus monkeys housed outdoors exhibit a distinct breeding season limited to the fall and winter months. Four groups of female rhesus monkeys, multiparous nonlactating (MNL; n = 8), multiparous lactating (ML; n = 6), primiparous lactating (PL; n = 3) and nulliparous first-time ovulators (N; n = 6) were studied to investigate the influence of age, parity, and social dominance rank on the parameters of the breeding season. MNL exhibited the longest season (146 days), and PL the shortest (70 days), with N (106 days) and ML (89 days) intermediate. PL females also had a significantly reduced percentage of normal ovulations compared to other groups. Neither body weight nor estimates of body fat were related to either the timing of the ovulatory season or the quality of ovulations within the season. Parity and social dominance rank were significantly related to the percentage of normal ovulations (r = 0.85), with low-ranking, primiparous females exhibiting the fewest normal ovulations. These data indicate that the presence of a suckling infant acts synergistically with environmental factors to determine the parameters of the breeding season. Furthermore, postpubertal females may be more responsive to those factors that terminate the breeding season, and some factor independent of body weight but associated with low social dominance rank and/or primiparity renders females less capable of normal luteal function during the breeding season.  相似文献

Sanderlings on Bathurst Island in the Canadian arctic have two patterns of incubation. At some nests the eggs are covered soon after the fourth egg has been laid and at others incubation is delayed for 5–6 days. Because the delay is about the same time required to lay a second clutch and because a single individual alone incubates at any one nest, we suspected that Sanderlings might normally lay two clutches in a season, the male caring for one brood and the female for the other.
Histological and gross examination of the ovaries of two females taken as the birds began incubation showed eight freshly ovulated follicles in each female. The size gradation and histological appearance of the follicles indicated that two clutches of four eggs each had been laid within 8–10 days by a single female. The ovary of one female had additional large yolky follicles, suggesting a physiological capability of further ovulations.
Field conditions in the arctic summer are highly variable, and the small eggs and the rapid sequence of broods of Sanderlings may be breeding adaptations that permit them to multiply the traditional wader clutch of four eggs by 2 or 3 in favourable years. Selection for mating systems characterised by brief pair bonds and by polyandry is expected in precocial birds where some broods are incubated and cared for by the male, but further field work is required to determine the precise mating system of Sanderlings.  相似文献

A two-year reproduction study of three isolated populations of different densities of the Aldabra Giant tortoise ( Geochelone gigantea Schweigger) showed dissimilarity in gonadal parameters; (i) as population density increased age at sexual maturity was delayed in males and females; (ii) although the mean number of mature follicles was similar in all populations, preovulatory follicular atresia was only found in the high density population; (iii) annual variation in preovulatory follicular atresia was dependent on rainfall and food availability; (iv) the number of clutches laid/♀/year decreased with increasing population density as did clutch size; in the high density population (and depending on rainfall) only 30–80% of the mature females bred. The discussion considered the importance of movement in determining survival/reproduction.  相似文献

Abstract The development of eggs and the degeneration of ovulated follicles in Eptatretus burgeri was studied over a period of one year. It was found that small resting eggs with a diameter of about 1.5 mm continue to grow in November. By the spawning season in October of the following year, the follicles attain a length of about 24 mm. Only one fertilized egg containing an embryo of 7.5 mm length was obtained. The ratio of males to females was found to vary throughout the year. The annual increase of body length in correlation to ovarian development in the hagfish is calculated to be 4 to 5 cm.  相似文献

Menstrual cycle characteristics of seasonally breeding rhesus monkeys   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Rhesus monkeys in seminatural environments exhibit a distinct seasonal mating cycle with conceptions restricted to the fall and winter months. In the present study, the characteristics of menstrual cycles were examined during a 1-year period in twelve rhesus monkeys in whom pregnancy was prevented. Menses occurred throughout the year, but ovulations were observed only in the fall and winter months. Menses in the spring and summer months occurred irregularly and were associated exclusively with anovulatory cycles. The total number of ovulations exhibited by these females during the breeding season ranged from two to six and was positively related to body weight, mean luteal phase progesterone (P) levels of normal cycles and social dominance rank. Ovulations with a short luteal phase were exhibited by four females (seven cycles), with the likelihood of occurrence increasing as the breeding season progressed. The incidence of abnormal cycles was predicted from the linear combination of parity, body weight and luteal phase P of normal ovulatory cycles. These results suggest that during the seasonally delimited period of ovulation, females exhibit a range in the quality and quantity of ovulations which may be predicted by certain idiosyncratic physical and behavioral traits.  相似文献

While avian eggshell colouration has attracted biologists for decades, little is known about its variation within individuals. The main goal of this study was to explore within‐ and between‐season repeatability of eggshell appearance in the great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus. To achieve this, we measured eggshell reflectance of first and replacement clutches of individual females within one breeding season, and the reflectance of their first clutches in two following breeding seasons. As environmental conditions may affect egg colouration, repeatability was estimated from linear mixed‐effects models where we initially included temperature and rainfall during egg laying, as well as year, clutch order and egg‐laying date as fixed effects, and clutch identity nested in females as random effects. Eggshell appearance within clutches showed moderate repeatability, while both within‐ and between‐season repeatability in clutch colouration for individual females was low. Our findings indicate that low intra‐clutch variation may have a function within the context of brood parasitism, i.e. in facilitating host recognition of alien eggs. With variable eggs between successive clutches, however, host females may need to relearn the appearance of their eggs with every clutch they lay. This could represent a significant constraint for host egg‐discrimination abilities. Yet, whether environmental or intrinsic physiological factors are responsible for the variation in eggshell colouration between successive clutches of the same females still remain to be discovered.  相似文献

Camels are said to be seasonal breeders, but the extent to which season interferes with food supply to affect ovarian function is not fully documented. Hence, the three aims of this study were: (1) to define the breeding season of camels maintained in semi-arid conditions in southern Morocco; (2) to relate the proportion of females with active ovaries (i.e., with follicles > 5 mm), with ovulatory (11-17 mm) or cystic (> 18 mm) follicles to age and body conditions score; (3) to study the consequences of the interactions between age and body conditions score on the proportion of females ovulating and conceiving; and (4) to compare follicular maturation, using in vitro steroidogenesis by intact follicles as a marker during the transition into the breeding season (October) and peak breeding season (March). There was a clear breeding season in the two flocks studied, since over 80-90% of the matings occurred during the period from mid-November to mid-April. Collection of ovaries at slaughter (n = 238) demonstrated a significant seasonal effect on the proportion of females with active ovaries (increasing from 73.5% in October-December to 89% in January-May), but no changes in the proportion of females with ovulatory follicles. Lean females (BCS < 2.5) had a delayed initiation of ovarian function in October-December. In addition, the proportion of females with cystic follicles was also affected by season (peaking during April-May). Neither age nor body condition modulated the frequency of cysts. Finally, the proportion of females conceiving increased steadily as season progressed (peaking at 57% in April-May). Body condition score did not affect this proportion, but young females (< or = 5 years old) had a low ability to conceive. Morphological features of large follicles were unaffected by season. Ovulatory follicles contained around 10(7) granulosa and theca cells. In vitro testosterone output by intact follicles was unrelated to follicle size and season. In vitro oestradiol output increased with increasing follicle size and was larger in follicles obtained during peak breeding season than at its initiation. This may indicate that early breeding season follicles display a low aromatase activity in their granulosa cells. Whether the low oestradiol output of early breeding season follicles is resulting in the low fertility observed at this period remains to be determined.  相似文献

Abstract The jacky dragon, Amphibolurus muricatus (White, ex Shaw 1790) is a medium sized agamid lizard from the southeast of Australia. Laboratory incubation trials show that this species possesses temperature‐dependent sex determination. Both high and low incubation temperatures produced all female offspring, while varying proportions of males hatched at intermediate temperatures. Females may lay several clutches containing from three to nine eggs during the spring and summer. We report the first field nest temperature recordings for a squamate reptile with temperature‐dependent sex determination. Hatchling sex is determined by nest temperatures that are due to the combination of daily and seasonal weather conditions, together with maternal nest site selection. Over the prolonged egg‐laying season, mean nest temperatures steadily increase. This suggests that hatchling sex is best predicted by the date of egg laying, and that sex ratios from field nests will vary over the course of the breeding season. Lizards hatching from eggs laid in the spring (October) experience a longer growing season and should reach a larger body size by the beginning of their first reproductive season, compared to lizards from eggs laid in late summer (February). Adult male A. muricatus attain a greater maximum body size and have relatively larger heads than females, possibly as a consequence of sexual selection due to male‐male competition for territories and mates. If reproductive success in males increases with larger body size, then early hatching males may obtain a greater fitness benefit as adults, compared to males that hatch in late summer. We hypothesize that early season nests should produce male‐biased sex ratios, and that this provides an adaptive explanation for temperature‐dependent sex determination in A. muricatus.  相似文献

Rana esculenta specimens were collected, during the last 13 years, in well-defined areas around Naples. The annual ovarian cycle shows distinct phases of recrudescence (starting September; vitellogenesis), breeding (late March-early July; egg deposition and active oogenesis) and quiescence (July-August; no follicular growth). Previtellogenic follicles are recruited for vitellogenesis in early September and in between two successive ovulatory waves. Breeding congregations are generally formed after a heavy rain fall and eggs are laid in standing waters, temporary or permanent. A maximum of three clutches of eggs is produced during the breeding season, at roughly monthly intervals. All mature females reproduce to some extent. Ovarian weight and clutch size are positively correlated to body weight. Depending upon the body size, the potential clutch size ranges from 1000 to 3500 eggs during the first wave of ovulation and it is notably smaller in the successive wave(s) of ovulation. Egg masses and tadpoles are left unprotected and mortality is high. The life cycle from the fertilized egg to completion of metamorphosis is 2 months and oogenesis in the ovary starts in the larva before the onset of metamorphic climax. Young females hatching from the first clutch of eggs may reach sexual maturity and breed in May the following year; those hatching from the last clutch require nearly 20 months to reach sexual maturity. The importance of some endocrine and exocrine factors for the regulation of ovarian activity and reproduction is discussed.

Synopsis The life cycle of leiurus-type Gasterosteus aculeatus occurring in a Mediterranean coastal wetland is described. Fish have a low number of lateral plates, short spines and marked sexual dimorphism in size. The life cycle is strictly annual, adults dying shortly after breeding. Adult fish migrate into seasonally-flooded freshwater marshes to breed, and the young migrate back to brackish water to pass the summer and autumn. Breeding occurs in March at water temperatures of about 10°C, the season lasting about 50 days. Growth of fish occurs throughout the year, but differs from year to year, resulting in variable adult size. Maximum gonadal investment of male fish is in autumn, whereas that of females is in spring. Gonadal investment of female fish, as measured by gonado-somatic index and fecundity, is higher than in other studied leiurus populations, but the number of clutches produced in a season is probably low. These differences in life history from other studied populations of sticklebacks are seen as adaptations to a mediterranean-type climate (high summer temperatures, seasonality of water bodies) and to heavy predation by fish-eating birds.  相似文献

We present data on the female reproductive traits of the Balkan wall lizard in the Deliblato Sand, a large continental sandland in the Pannonian area in the northwestern periphery of the species range. The clutch and egg characteristics of the population were investigated on the basis of clutches laid in laboratory conditions by gravid females captured in one locality. Balkan wall lizards produced at least two clutches in a breeding season. Individual females laid clutches of commonly two (range 1–4) eggs. The female body size had no effect on clutch and egg size. There was no trade-off between egg size and clutch size.  相似文献

Earlé, R. A. 1989. Breeding biology of the Redbreasted Swallow Hirundo semirufa. Ostrich 60: 13–21.

The two races of the Redbreasted Swallow Hirundo semirufa seem to have separate breeding seasons with the northern race H. s. gordoni breeding April-July, while most records for the nominate race fall in October-February. All nests studied were in concrete culverts less than 1 m high. Eggs laid in second clutches by individual females weighed significantly less than eggs laid in first clutches. Eggs hatched on average 16,2 days after incubation started or 18–21 days after the eggs were laid. Only females incubated. Chicks fledged 23–25 days after hatching and reached a maximum body mass of about 31,5 g on day 18 before a steady decline in mass until fledging. Most nesting failures resulted from infertile eggs or starvation of young in the nest (16,2% of all young starved). Overall breeding success was 60,6%. In all, 81,8% of first clutches produced fledglings but only 44,4% of second clutches. Over a three year period 4,9 young were produced per pair breeding in the area (1,6 young/pair/breeding season).  相似文献
