2-Hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (omicron-vanillin), the antimutagenic effect of which has been reported on mutagenesis induced by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO) in Escherichia coli WP2s, enhanced N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG)-induced mutagenesis in the same strain. A remarkable enhancement of mutagenesis provoked by N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) was also observed by the addition of omicron-vanillin. No enhancing effect was observed on mutagenesis induced by other mutagens such as methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), dimethylsulfate, N-ethyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (ENNG), N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU), ethyl methanesulfonate, diethylsulfate, 4NQO and furylfuramide (AF-2). On the contrary, omicron-vanillin greatly suppressed AF-2- and 4NQO-induced mutagenesis and showed a slight suppressing effect against mutagenesis induced by MMS, ENNG and ENU. One possible explanation for the enhancing effect of omicron-vanillin on the mutagenesis induced by MNNG or MNU in E. coli WP2s may be inhibition of an inducible adaptive response. Among 7 derivatives of omicron-vanillin, 2-hydroxy-3-ethoxy-benzaldehyde, omicron-hydroxybenzaldehyde and m-methoxybenzaldehyde showed an enhancing effect on MNNG-induced mutagenesis. 相似文献

This paper introduces some basic concepts of the interdisciplinary field of neuromuscular control, without the intention to be complete. The complexity and multifaceted nature of neuromuscular control systems is briefly addressed. Principles of stability and planning of motion trajectories are discussed. Closed-loop and open-loop control are considered, together with the inherent stability properties of muscles and the geometrical design of animal bodies. Various modelling approaches, as used by several authors in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Series B, May 1999 issue, such as inverse and forward dynamics are outlined. Chemical compounds can cause amplification of specific DNA sequences. DNA amplification may result in an enhanced production of gene products which help cells to cope with the chemicals. This may lead to a resistance of the cells toward the agent. Additionally, initiation of transformation or progression of transformed cells to tumorigenicity may also involve DNA amplification. Therefore, it is of interest to study the potential of chemicals to induce DNA amplification. This report focuses on the investigation of a variety of chemicals in 2 systems with which the amplification of viral DNA is measured within cells in culture. One model system comprises the measurement of SV40 DNA content in an SV40-transformed Chinese hamster cell line following chemical treatment. Antitumor agents as well as genotoxic and non-genotoxic compounds were studied in this system as a first step to determine the DNA amplification-inducing potential of a variety of differently acting chemical compounds. Also, a novel assay based on adeno-associated virus infection of cells is described. This system may offer the possibility of studying DNA amplification in a variety of different target cells. For the future, the need is stressed to develop and analyze versatile systems to study amplification of specific target genes in untransformed cells and in tumor cells. 相似文献

Some proteins we now regard as animal lectins were discovered before plant lectins, though many were not recognised as carbohydrate-binding proteins for many years after first being reported. As recently as 1988, most animal lectins were thought to belong to one of two primary structural families, the C-type and S-type (presently known as galectins) lectins. However, it is now clear that animal lectin activity is found in association with an astonishing diversity of primary structures. At least 12 structural families are known to exist, while many other lectins have structures apparently unique amongst carbohydrate-binding proteins, although some of those "orphans" belong to recognised protein families that are otherwise not associated with sugar recognition. Furthermore, many animal lectins also bind structures other than carbohydrates via protein-protein, protein-lipid or protein-nucleic acid interactions. While animal lectins undoubtedly fulfil a variety of functions, many could be considered in general terms to be recognition molecules within the immune system. More specifically, lectins have been implicated in direct first-line defence against pathogens, cell trafficking, immune regulation and prevention of autoimmunity. 相似文献
