Carnivora includes three independent evolutionary transitions to the marine environment: pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walruses), sea otters, and polar bears. All three lineages must contend with the thermal challenges of submersion in the marine environment. In the present study, we investigated changes in the fur associated with the transition from a terrestrial to an aquatic lifestyle, comparing fur characteristics among these lineages with those of semi‐aquatic and strictly terrestrial carnivores. Characteristics included gross morphology (hair cuticle shape, circularity, length, and density) and thermal conductivity. We found consistent trends in hair morphology associated with aquatic living, such that marine carnivores have significantly flatter (P < 0.001), shorter (P < 0.001), and denser hairs (P < 0.001) than terrestrial carnivores. However, sea lions, phocids, and walrus, which have thicker blubber layers than fur seals, have lower fur densities than fur seals (P < 0.001). Species utilizing fur for insulation in water also showed an elongation of hair cuticle scales compared to terrestrial species and marine species relying on blubber for insulation (P < 0.001). By testing pelts under hydrostatic pressure, we determined that flattening of the hairs, cuticular scale elongation, and increased fur density are critical characteristics for maintaining an insulating air layer within the fur during submersion. Overall, these results indicate consistent evolutionary modifications to the fur associated with the transition to aquatic living, as well as a decrease in fur function associated with a greater reliance on blubber in some groups. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献

The primary structures of alpha- and beta-chains of hemoglobin from reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) were determined. Comparison of the reindeer hemoglobin sequence with those of human and bovine hemoglobins showed 50 and 29 substitutions per alpha beta dimer, respectively. The influence of replacements on the modulation of hemoglobin oxygen affinity by heterothopic ligands and temperature, as well as their importance on the structure-function relationships in hemoglobin are discussed.  相似文献

The poorly known fossil record of fur seals and sea lions (Otariidae) does not reflect their current diversity and widespread abundance. This limited fossil record contrasts with the more complete fossil records of other pinnipeds such as walruses (Odobenidae). The oldest known otariids appear 5–6 Ma after the earliest odobenids, and the remarkably derived craniodental morphology of otariids offers few clues to their early evolutionary history and phylogenetic affinities among pinnipeds. We report a new otariid, Eotaria crypta, from the lower middle Miocene ‘Topanga’ Formation (15–17.1 Ma) of southern California, represented by a partial mandible with well-preserved dentition. Eotaria crypta is geochronologically intermediate between ‘enaliarctine’ stem pinnipedimorphs (16.6–27 Ma) and previously described otariid fossils (7.3–12.5 Ma), as well as morphologically intermediate by retaining an M2 and a reduced M1 metaconid cusp and lacking P2–4 metaconid cusps. Eotaria crypta eliminates the otariid ghost lineage and confirms that otariids evolved from an ‘enaliarctine’-like ancestor.  相似文献

The nest environment can have important influences on incubation behavior and nestling development in birds. Nest thermal properties, particularly nest composition and size, can have a major influence on heat loss. To examine the role of nest size and insulation on clutch cooling rates, we collected tree swallow Tachycineta bicolor nests and measured the cooling rate of eggs in a controlled thermal environment. We also examined the thermal benefits of nest feathers by comparing the cooling rates of nests with and without feathers. Nests with more feather insulation and heavier, deeper cupped nests cooled at slower rates. In addition, nests with feathers cooled at much slower rates than did the same nests without feathers. Our results show that nest insulation and size play important roles in nest cooling rates, which may ultimately affect incubation costs and thus reproductive performance.  相似文献

In a proteomic analysis of rpoS-deficient Vibrio vulnificus versus the wild type, one of the down-regulated proteins in the rpoS mutant strain was identified as a Fur protein, a ferric uptake regulator. According to the contemporary ecosystem approach, integrated management of natural resources recognizes that humans, with their cultural diversity, are an integral component of many ecosystems. Therefore, the linkages of human actions with their environment have to be assessed in an integrative manner. Appropriate models and indicators, data and information for human and environmental systems are needed as well as suitable linkages between the specific components. In this paper, an indicator framework for the analysis and assessment of complex human-environmental systems is presented. An example application from a research project dealing with the development of sustainable management strategies for the husbandry of semi-domesticated reindeer in northern Fenno-Scandinavia illustrates the potentials and limitations of this framework. The concept and indicators of ecological integrity are used to assess the impacts of reindeer herding on the natural environment. Human well-being is evaluated with indicators for social and economic welfare. In conjunction with three scenarios, associated with varying land use patterns and land use priorities, the relevance of the particular components for a sustainable resource management in the case study area was estimated and recommendations to management authorities could be given.  相似文献

Carter and Caler have produced a 'cumulative damage' model for the fracture of bone, based on creep experiments on human bone, which has been corroborated by monotonic tensile tests on bone, loaded at various strain rates. Monotonic tensile tests on reindeer's antler, which has a lower modulus of elasticity than human bone, produce very similar results. Unlike human bone, reindeer antler always shows a large post-yield strain, and it is possible to distinguish pre-yield and post-yield behaviour. The 'final stiffness' (ultimate stress/ultimate strain) is invariant with strain rate. This is confirmation that bone fractures when a certain amount of damage has accumulated. However, reindeer antler shows a considerable post-yield increase in stress. This is difficult to accommodate in a cumulative damage model.  相似文献

The complete primary structure of the two hemoglobin components of the fur seal (Arctocephalus galapagoensis) is presented. The two components (HbI and HbII) occur in nearly equal amounts and have identical β-chains; whereas the two α-chains (αI/αII) differ by six exchanges Ile/Val, Met/Thr, Ser/Ala, Pro/His, Lys/Gly, and Thr/Ala at positions 10, 34, 35, 50, 78, and 131, respectively. The components were isolated by DEAE-Sephacel chromatography and were separated into the globin chains by RP-HPLC on a column of Nucleocil-C4. The sequences have been determined by Edman degradation in liquid- and gas-phase sequencer, using the native chains and tryptic peptides. The sequences compared with those of other Carnivora species and an adult human globin chains. An identical β-chain is found in fur seal and walrus, whereas larger differences were found between αI and αII compared to β-chains.  相似文献

The role of parasites in the dynamics of a reindeer population   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
Even though theoretical models show that parasites may regulate host population densities, few empirical studies have given support to this hypothesis. We present experimental and observational evidence for a host-parasite interaction where the parasite has sufficient impact on host population dynamics for regulation to occur. During a six year study of the Svalbard reindeer and its parasitic gastrointestinal nematode Ostertagia gruehneri we found that anthelminthic treatment in April-May increased the probability of a reindeer having a calf in the next year, compared with untreated controls. However, treatment did not influence the over-winter survival of the reindeer. The annual variation in the degree to which parasites depressed fecundity was positively related to the abundance of O. gruehneri infection the previous October, which in turn was related to host density two years earlier. In addition to the treatment effect, there was a strong negative effect of winter precipitation on the probability of female reindeer having a calf. A simple matrix model was parameterized using estimates from our experimental and observational data. This model shows that the parasite-mediated effect on fecundity was sufficient to regulate reindeer densities around observed host densities.  相似文献

The cyanogen bromide‐resistant proteins of lamprey cartilage are biochemically related to the mammalian elastic protein, elastin. This study investigates their mechanical properties and enquires whether, like elastin, long‐range elasticity arises in them from a combination of entropic and hydrophobic mechanisms. Branchial and pericardial proteins resembled elastin mechanically, with elastic moduli of 0.13–0.35 MPa, breaking strains of 50%, and low hysteresis. Annular and piston proteins had higher elastic moduli (0.27–0.75 MPa) and larger hysteresis. Exchanging solvent water for trifluoroethanol increased the elastic moduli, whereas increasing temperature lowered the elastic moduli. Raman microspectrometry showed small differences in side‐chain modes consistent with reported biochemical differences. Decomposition of the amide I band indicated that the secondary structures were like those of elastin, preponderantly unordered, which probably confer the conformational flexibility necessary for entropy elasticity. Piston and annular proteins showed the strongest interactions with water, suggesting, together with the mechanical testing data, a greater role of hydrophobic interactions in their mechanics. Two‐photon imaging of intrinsic fluorescence and dye injection experiments showed that annular and piston proteins formed closed‐cell honeycomb structures, whereas the branchial and pericardial proteins formed open‐cell structures, which may account for the differences in mechanical properties. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Every Christmas we sing about Rudolph the red-nosed Reindeer, but do we give much thought to why his nose is red? The general consensus is that Rudolf has caught a cold, but as far as I know no proper diagnosis has been made of his abnormal condition. I think that, rather than having a cold, Rudolf is suffering from a parasitic infection of his respiratory system. To some this may seem a bit far-fetched as one would not expect an animal living with Santa Claus at the North Pole to be plagued by parasites, but I shall show otherwise.  相似文献
