Abstract

Stoats (Mustela erminea) are introduced pests in New Zealand, and there is an urgent need for effective trapping systems that kill the animal in a humane manner. A treadle trap was designed, the Dominus trap, that utilised an earlier‐proven humane killing system enhanced by the addition of a treadle plate trigger. This system enabled the trap to be classified as a Class A trap under the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) guidelines for animal kill traps, by successfully rendering 10/10 animals unconscious within 30 s. The Dominus trap mimics a tunnel, which by its very shape entices the animal to enter, but weighs only 600 g. Atrial at Flea Bay, on Banks Peninsula, used 35 Dominus traps placed alternately between 35 Fenn Mk VI traps set over 3150 trap nights (TN). The trial was conducted from March to May 2007 and was repeated for a further 7740 trap nights from January to March 2008, using 20 Dominus traps. The Dominus trap caught stoats consistently at the rate of 0.22 stoats/100 TN in both years, compared with 0 and 0.14/100 TN in Fenn traps, so potentially provides a humane alternative to the Fenn.  相似文献

The New Zealand Department of Conservation recently (May 2008) began a programme to eradicate stoats (Mustela erminea) from Resolution Island (Fiordland, New Zealand) using kill traps. In conjunction with this eradication effort we have the following 3 objectives: (1) to measure the population abundance of stoats prior to trapping using hair tubes and forensic DNA methods; (2) optimise techniques for detecting individual stoats, in order to quantify the probability of stoat persistence given no detections after several months of trapping; and (3) use genetic analyses to identify the possible origins (mainland incursions or in situ breeding) of new stoats captured in a control zone. We present Bayesian modelling techniques used to determine the probability of stoat persistence on the island after the initial population reduction, when individual stoats are no longer captured in traps. We also provide details on an effective level of monitoring and trapping effort required to maintain a comfortable level of confidence that stoats no longer persist on the island. Improving these techniques adds to variety of valuable tools for management of invasive mammal species in a range of natural environments worldwide.  相似文献

We present two statistical models documenting variations in density indices of stoats and of mice in New Zealand southern beech (Nothofagus spp.) forests. They confirm previous, simpler correlations showing that the summer capture rate of stoats increases with spring mouse density index up to about 20–25 mouse captures per 100 trap-nights (C/100TN). However, at much higher mouse densities (60–80 C/100TN), observed in the Grebe and Borland Valleys in southern Fiordland in 1979/80 and again in 1999/2000, fewer stoats were caught than expected. These models quantify a serious decline in capture rate of stoats during periods of high mouse abundance over the range 25-80 C/100TN. At such times, management strategies aiming to protect threatened birds by intensive lethal trapping of stoats during the nesting seasons may be least effective just when they are most needed.  相似文献

Internationally, invasive vertebrate species pose a significant threat to biodiversity, agricultural production and human health. To manage these species a wide range of tools, including traps, are used. In New Zealand, brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), stoats (Mustela ermine), and ship rats (Rattus rattus) are invasive and there is an ongoing demand for cost-effective non-toxic methods for controlling these pests. Recently, traps with multiple-capture capability have been developed which, because they do not require regular operator-checking, are purported to be more cost-effective than traditional single-capture traps. However, when pest populations are being maintained at low densities (as is typical of orchestrated pest management programmes) it remains uncertain if it is more cost-effective to use fewer multiple-capture traps or more single-capture traps. To address this uncertainty, we used an individual-based spatially explicit modelling approach to determine the likely maximum animal-captures per trap, given stated pest densities and defined times traps are left between checks. In the simulation, single- or multiple-capture traps were spaced according to best practice pest-control guidelines. For possums with maintenance densities set at the lowest level (i.e. 0.5/ha), 98% of all simulated possums were captured with only a single capacity trap set at each site. When possum density was increased to moderate levels of 3/ha, having a capacity of three captures per trap caught 97% of all simulated possums. Results were similar for stoats, although only two potential captures per site were sufficient to capture 99% of simulated stoats. For rats, which were simulated at their typically higher densities, even a six-capture capacity per trap site only resulted in 80% kill. Depending on target species, prevailing density and extent of immigration, the most cost-effective strategy for pest control in New Zealand might be to deploy several single-capture traps rather than investing in fewer, but more expense, multiple-capture traps.  相似文献

The abundance and taxonomic richness of adult caddisfly faunas were determined at varing distances (up to 200 m) away from three North Island, New Zealand, streams to help define appropriate forested riparian zone widths for adult aquatic insects. Adults were collected using sticky traps and ultraviolet light traps on four occasions over summer. Light traps were more effective at catching caddisflies than sticky traps, but both methods gave similar patterns of declining abundance and taxonomic richness with distance from the stream edge. Abundances of total caddisflies at 20 m were <21% of those caught at the stream edge for both trapping techniques. The same trends were evident for abundances of most common species in light traps, whereas bimodal peaks were evident with distance from the channel edge for percentage females of three common species. More than 30% of species caught at the stream edge was found in light traps at least 70 m into forest at all sites. A faster rate of decline for abundance than richness with distance away from the stream reflected the relatively large distances travelled by representatives of many species. Similar results from the three sites for numbers and species richness indicate that the main area of activity for adult Trichoptera in forested riparian zones was within 30 m of the stream edge at these sites.  相似文献

Abstract

A total of 89 species of elasmobranch and teleost fish was recorded from the West Norfolk Ridge in 1986. Between 50 and 60 of these have not previously been reported from the area. Fish species were caught in bottom trawls at depths between 100 m and 1100 m, principally on the Wanganella Bank. Depth distribution is discussed. Species composition is very similar to that of northern New Zealand.  相似文献

Abstract

A total of 1599 stoats were collected from 14 study areas (including all 10 National Parks) from 1972 to 1976. Samples were larger in summer, and contained more females. Young stoats are born in September-October, and females reach adult weight by the following March, though males not until after August. There was significant geographic variation in the body size of adult stoats sampled: males from lowland podocarp/broadleaved forests averaged 3% smaller than males from upland beech forests in skull length, and 4% smaller in head-and-body length. This pattern was repeated, less clearly, in females and in young (approximately 2–5 months old). In contrast with stoats in Britain, assumed to be still the same size as the colonising stock introduced into New Zealand in 1884 and subsequently, males from lowland podocarp forests were unchanged or possibly smaller, and males from upland beech forests were larger; females were larger in all habitats. In males, the extent of geographic variation is almost as great in New Zealand as in the whole of continental Europe. Possible explanations of this pattern are discussed.  相似文献

Introduced stoats (Mustela erminea) are important invasive predators in southern beech (Nothofagus sp.) forests in New Zealand. In these forests, one of their primary prey species – introduced house mice (Mus musculus), fluctuate dramatically between years, driven by the irregular heavy seed‐fall (masting) of the beech trees. We examined the effects of mice on stoats in this system by comparing the weights, age structure and population densities of stoats caught on two large islands in Fiordland, New Zealand – one that has mice (Resolution Island) and one that does not (Secretary Island). On Resolution Island, the stoat population showed a history of recruitment spikes and troughs linked to beech masting, whereas the Secretary Island population had more constant recruitment, indicating that rodents are probably the primary cause for the ‘boom and bust’ population cycle of stoats in beech forests. Resolutions Island stoats were 10% heavier on average than Secretary Island stoats, supporting the hypothesis that the availability of larger prey (mice verses wētā) leads to larger stoats. Beech masting years on this island were also correlated with a higher weight for stoats born in the year of the masting event. The detailed demographic information on the stoat populations of these two islands supports previously suggested interactions among mice, stoats and beech masting. These interactions may have important consequences for the endemic species that interact with fluctuating populations of mice and stoats.  相似文献

Abstract

Stoats (Mustela erminea) are an important predator of many forest bird species in New Zealand, and more effective methods for their control are being sought. Stoat control using Fenn traps has been shown to prevent predation on mohua (Mohoua ochrocephala), but this technique is labour‐intensive and costly to use for protection of large areas of habitat. We evaluated 1080 delivered in eggs as a poison for control of stoats. The lethal dose has been determined by captive and field trials, but attempts to implement a large‐scale control operation have given inconclusive results. To clarify the effectiveness of 1080 eggs as a control technique, we carried out further field trials with radio‐tagged stoats in the Makarora Valley. Twenty animals were monitored by radio tracking, and data loggers and video cameras recorded their visits to bait stations. The precise time an individual stoat ate a poison egg could be determined from data logger and video information, and its fate was followed. Sixteen of twenty stoats were killed by 1080 eggs, three died of other causes and one remained alive at the end of the trials.  相似文献

Abstract

Intensive predator control on game estates in 19th-century England is believed to be largely responsible for the decline of two large native mustelids, the pine marten and polecat. Two small, related, species, the stoat and weasel, were also killed in large numbers but are still common in England, and have been introduced into New Zealand. The theory of life-history tactics offers an explanation for the different effects of persecution on large and small mustelids. It also suggests that stoats in New Zealand national parks cannot be exterminated by trapping, and that the first priority for the conservation of rare native birds such as the takahe is active management to stimulate breeding.  相似文献

Abstract

Emergence traps were used continuously for 2 years to determine the population density and seasonality of invertebrates in a mixed lowland broadleaf-podocarp forest near Wellington, New Zealand. A total of 53 920 individuals of 21 invertebrate orders was caught. Although more individuals were caught in the first year than in the second, this was not consistent amongst the different groups or species. Dipterans, staphylinid beetles, and solitary wasps were the most numerous insects caught. Diptera, Araneida, Opiliones, and Hymenoptera emerged from the forest floor in every month of the 2 year study. Many other invertebrate groups were active throughout the year but seasonal catches were significantly different with more recorded in summer than in other seasons. Numbers of several species were positively correlated with temperature. Likely effects of the extended invertebrate activity on the forest ecology are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Experimental field trials were used to compare the attractiveness to stoats (Mustela erminea) and ferrets (M. furo) of traps set with either a synthetic scent lure or with fresh food bait. One lure, containing 2‐n‐propylthietane, effectively attracted as many ferrets as did rabbit meat bait. Fewer stoats were caught with this lure than with egg bait. Made up in a slow‐release formulation in “plastic rope”, the lure remained attractive to ferrets for at least 2 weeks under sunny field conditions. Traps containing a second lure, 3‐n‐propyl‐l,2‐dithiolane, were less successful at catching both mustelid species than those containing fresh food baits. The scent lures were not attractive to non‐target species, but neither did they deter some species.  相似文献

We recorded trap site characteristics and captures during a trapping programme designed to protect breeding and released black stilts (kaki, Himantopus novaezelandiae) from predation, in order to learn about trap site features that might improve the efficacy of future predator trapping management. Captures were made at 1629 leg-hold traps opened over 71 333 trap nights between 1998 and 2000, at six locations in the Upper Waitaki Basin, New Zealand. Twelve trap site variables were recorded. The model describing the best combination of variables for four groups of predators (cats Felis catus, mustelids Mustela furo (ferrets) and M. erminea (stoats), harriers Circus approximans and hedgehogs Erinaceus europaeus) was found using logistic regression and AIC values. For all predator groups both the way the trap was set and its placement within the landscape (with respect to habitat type and the distribution of landscape features that might be important to predators) influenced capture rates. Mustelids and harriers were more likely to be caught on stable riverbed habitats where rabbit densities are highest, while hedgehogs were mainly caught on river terraces and cats were equally likely to be caught anywhere. Individual trap characteristics in terms of set type, trap haze, trap backing, plate haze, visibility of bait, substrate and ground cover, associated with higher catch rates for each predator group are described.  相似文献

Abstract

Captive stoats are essential for testing technological developments for pest control in New Zealand. We have reviewed husbandry practices and experiences of keeping stoats in captivity for a range of purposes. Stoats can be kept individually outside and subjected to normal regimes of light and temperature if sufficient bedding and shelter is provided. They appear to survive and breed best when fed on freshly killed rodents. Live prey is desirable though will rarely be permissible due to regulatory constraints. Breeding in captivity has been problematic in most cases, and although in a few instances wild‐caught females carrying embryos in delay have given birth, this is a rare event. Procedures taken to minimise stress in captivity may reduce the loss rate of blastocysts due to resorption and facilitate rapid expansion of captive colonies.  相似文献

The efficacy of three suction traps for trapping phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) was compared. Traps were baited with Co2 and used without any light source. CO2‐baited CDC traps were evaluated either in their standard downdraft orientation or inverted (iCDC traps). Mosquito Magnet‐X (MMX) counterflow geometry traps were tested in the updraft orientation only. Both updraft traps (iCDC and MMX) were deployed with their opening ~10 cm from the ground while the opening of the downdraft (CDC) trap was ~40 cm above ground. Comparisons were conducted in two arid locations where different sand fly species prevail. In the Jordan Valley, 3,367 sand flies were caught, 2,370 of which were females. The predominant species was Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus) papatasi, Scopoli 1786 (>99%). The updraft‐type traps iCDC and MMX caught an average of 118 and 67.1 sand flies per trap night, respectively. The CDC trap caught 32.9 sand flies on average per night, significantly less than the iCDC traps. In the Judean desert, traps were arranged in a 3×3 Latin square design. A total of 565 sand flies were caught, 345 of which were females. The predominant species was P. (Paraphlebotomus) sergenti Parrot 1917 (87%). The updraft traps iCDC and MMX caught an average of 25.6 and 17.9 sand flies per trap per night, respectively. The CDC trap caught 7.8 sand flies on average per night, significantly less than the iCDC traps. The female to male ratio was 1.7 on average for all trap types. In conclusion, updraft traps deployed with their opening close to the ground are clearly more effective for trapping sand flies than downdraft CDC traps in open habitats.  相似文献

Stoats (Mustela erminea) are a significant pest in New Zealand. A critical aspect of their management is the ability to identify individuals in order to estimate abundance or to determine the origin of residual animals after control, particularly as the trap-shy nature of stoats reduces the utility of trapping to gain this information. We investigated non-invasive ?capture? methods as an alternative to live-trapping or removal methods for estimating stoat abundance. First we determined whether sufficient variability exists at six microsatellite DNA loci to reliably identify individuals in the potentially bottlenecked, introduced stoat populations of New Zealand. In December 2001 we conducted a 7-night pilot field experiment using a modified hair-tube design, where we obtained a total of 64 hair samples. Sufficient DNA was extracted from 3?6 hair follicles to genotype a total of 51 samples. DNA quality declined if samples were left in the field for several nights before being collected, and daily checks proved best for maximising the quality of DNA obtained, while minimising the risk of multiple ?captures? of stoats. Conclusions were that non-invasive molecular sampling is likely to be a viable technique for estimating population density of stoats in New Zealand beech forest but that additional variable loci are required.  相似文献

From the close correlation between the body size of European stoats and the mean size of their vertebrate prey it ought to be possible to predict the body size of European stoats living on a prey fauna of a given size distribution. In New Zealand, stoats of European stock have lived for > 100 yr on a prey fauna containing fewer small and more large vertebrate prey than in Europe. They have become generally larger than their ancestors, as expected – especially the females. The vertebrate prey size index for New Zealand stoats extends the correlation predicted from European data. New Zealand stoats also eat large numbers of native insects. If these are included the local prey size indices are lower but still tend to vary with the substantial local variation in body size of stoats within New Zealand. Recent results from southern Ireland also fit the European correlation, but the few data so far available from Northern Ireland do not.  相似文献

In New Zealand, alpine grasslands occur above the treeline of beech forest. Historically stoat control paradigms in New Zealand?s montane natural areas have assumed alpine grassland is a marginal habitat that limits dispersal between beech forest stoat populations. We compared the summer-to-autumn (January?April) density, weight, diet and winter survival of stoats between these two habitatsduring years of low beech seedfall. Stoats were live-trapped, marked and released in alpine grassland and low-altitude beech forest in the Borland Valley, Fiordland National Park, during 2003 and 2004, and were caught and euthanased for necropsy in 2005. Stoat density was estimated using spatially explicit capture?recapture (SECR). The proportion of stoats marked in one year but recaptured in the next was used as a measure of ?observed survival?. Prey remains were identified from scats collected during 2003 and 2004 and stomachs from stoats killed in 2005. Stoat density was similar in both habitats over the two years, about one stoat per square kilometre. Observed survival from 2003?2004 was also similar, but survival from 2004?2005 was higher in alpine grassland than in beech forest. In 2003, male stoats were on average heavier in alpine grassland than in beech forest, although average weights were similar in the other years. Diet differed significantly between the two habitats, with stoats in alpine grasslands eating mainly ground weta (a large invertebrate) (72%) and hares (23%), while stoats in beech forest ate mainly birds (31%) and mice (19%). Collectively these results suggest that alpine grasslands are not a poor quality habitat for stoats. Traditionally it has been thought that stoats cannot survive on invertebrate prey alone. This research demonstrates that stoats relying largely on invertebrate prey can occur at similar densities and with equivalent survival to stoats relying on vertebrate prey.  相似文献

Abstract. The hypothesis that bioluminescence produced by larvae of the New Zealand glow-worm, Arachnocampa luminosa , attracts prey was tested experimentally in Reserve Cave, Waitomo, New Zealand, and in its bush-clad entrance over a total of 200 days during winter, spring, and summer. We compared catches on transparent adhesive traps placed either over glowworms or over areas from which glowworms had been removed. Adhesive traps over glowworms caught significantly more invertebrates per trap per day than did control traps. Glowworms in bush attracted greater numbers and types of invertebrates than did glowworms in the cave. Diptera predominated in both bush (86% of the total catch) and cave (89%). Also caught were small numbers of Araneae, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera, Trichoptera, Gastropoda, Acarina, and Neuroptera—listed in order of abundance—but no adults of A. luminosa were caught. Glowworms under adhesive traps survived with little or no food for up to 78 days.  相似文献

Visual cues play a key role in host finding in many phytophagous insects, including the tomato potato psyllid (TPP), Bactericera cockerelli (?ulc) (Hemiptera: Triozidae), a serious pest of solanaceous crops. This study evaluated the response of TPP to sticky traps of one of three colours, up to four sizes, and with or without green borders in an organic potato crop in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. On average, large traps caught a higher density of TPP than small traps (with or without border; 25 and 14 TPP per 100 cm2, respectively). Tomato potato psyllid density on the green border was affected by the colour of the centre trap; a blue centre resulted in substantially fewer TPP on the green border than a yellow centre (9.0 vs. 69.6 TPP per 100 cm2). Trap catches in early summer were male biased, whereas catches of male and female TPP in late summer were approximately equal.  相似文献
