Melittobia australica (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is a gregariousectoparasitoid of the prepupae and pupae of solitary wasps andbees. The males never disperse from their natal patch, and matingtakes place only on the host from which they emerged. We measuredthe offspring sex ratio of M. australica with differing foundressnumbers and examined combat between emerged males. The offspringsex ratios were extremely female biased and almost independentof foundress number in all cases. The population of M. australicaused in the experiment was infected with the cytoplasmicallyinherited symbiotic bacterium Wolbachia. However, although Wolbachiais a potential sex-ratio distorter, noninfected individualsshowed the same sex ratio patterns as the Wolbachia-infectedindividuals. An arena experiment showed that younger males werealmost always killed by older males that had eclosed earlier. These results suggested that lethal male–male combat isan additional factor distorting the sex ratio toward a morefemale-biased sex ratio. This provides a new perspective oncurrent local mate competition models.  相似文献

Evolutionary theory predicts that levels of dispersal vary in response to the extent of local competition for resources and the relatedness between potential competitors. Here, we test these predictions by making use of a female dispersal dimorphism in the parasitoid wasp Melittobia australica. We show that there are two distinct female morphs, which differ in morphology, pattern of egg production, and dispersal behaviour. As predicted by theory, we found that greater competition for resources resulted in increased production of dispersing females. In contrast, we did not find support for the prediction that high relatedness between competitors increases the production of dispersing females in Melittobia. Finally, we exploit the close links between the evolutionary processes leading to selection for dispersal and for biased sex ratios to examine whether the pattern of dispersal can help distinguish between competing hypotheses for the lack of sex ratio adjustment in Melittobia.  相似文献

Abstract

More than 50 000 social wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) were collected between March and August 1987 from throughout New Zealand. The most widespread species is the German wasp (Vespula germanica). The common wasp (V. vulgaris) has colonised about half the country and appears to be still spreading. It tends to appear in urban areas first, presumably because it is transported there with people and/or their belongings. The Asian paper wasp (Polistes chinensis) and Australian paper wasp (P. humilis), are confined to the northern half of the North Island, but the former species is spreading south.  相似文献

Abstract

From July 1987 to June 1989, 141 nests and 365 nests, respectively, of the adventive social vespines the German wasp, Vespula germanica (F.), and the common wasp V. vulgaris (L.), from the City of Christchurch, New Zealand, were evaluated for seven major characteristics.

There were few, if any, differences in nest sites, and from spring to early summer in nest traffic, nest size, and numbers of combs. However, Getman wasps showed no preference for direction of nest entrances, while common wasp nests were more numerous in areas most exposed to the morning sun. Some Getman wasp nests survived the winter and began producing new worker cells by late June, but all common wasp nests died by June. Because common wasp nests have been reported surviving the winter in beech forest, which produces honey dew, and honey dew is not available in Christchurch City, common wasp nest survival over winter may be more dependent upon carbohydrates and/or prey dependent upon carbohydrates than the survival of German wasp nests. The presence of large, expanding wasp nests from early spring must impose localised predation pressures virtually unknown in the Northern Hemisphere where overwintering nests are rare. Wasp population dynamics, and impacts of wasps on fauna, are likely to vary between different geographical areas of New Zealand, but as targets for biological control, the two wasp species can generally be considered to be quite similar.  相似文献

The sex ratio behavior of parasitoid wasps in the genus Melittobia is scandalous. In contrast to the prediction of Hamilton's local mate competition theory, and the behavior of numerous other species, their extremely female‐biased sex ratios (1–5% males) change little in response to the number of females that lay eggs on a patch. We examined the mating structure and fitness consequences of adjusting the sex ratio in M. australica and found that (1) the rate of inbreeding did not differ from that expected with random mating within each patch; (2) the fitness of females that produced less female‐biased sex ratios (10 or 20% males) was greater than that of females who produced the sex ratio normally observed in M. australica. These results suggest that neither assortative mating nor asymmetrical competition between males can explain the extreme sex ratios. More generally, the finding that the sex ratios produced by females led to a decrease in their fitness suggests that the existing theory fails to capture a key aspect of the natural history of Melittobia, and emphasizes the importance of examining the fitness consequences of different sex ratio strategies, not only whether observed sex ratios correlate with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

Abstract

Nests of both common (Vespula vulgaris) and German wasps (V. germanica) sometimes overwinter in New Zealand. Three overwintering common wasp colonies were found in low-altitude honeydew beech forest; about 2% of the colonies initiated there in 1988 survived the winter. Wasp traffic rates from nests in Nelson city and a nation wide survey of wasp abundance, showed that more German wasp than common wasp workers were on the wing in winter and spring. German wasp colonies in Nelson city were more likely to overwinter than were common wasp colonies. Of the active German wasp colonies recorded in Nelson in January and February 1989, only two (4%) had previously overwintered, but these two nests accounted for 38% of all German wasp workers estimated to leave nests in the area. Had other overwintering colonies not been poisoned, overwintering colonies might have accounted for up to 11 % of nests and produced up to 64% of German wasp workers on the wing in January and February 1989.

Overwintering common wasp colonies did not produce queens or drones in their first year or second spring, but all 10 overwintering German wasp colonies examined produced sexuals at both times. German wasp queens produced in winter and spring may influence the number of colonies successfully initiated and affect the population dynamics of German wasps in New Zealand.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The ecology of the eulophid parasitoid Melittobia australica Girault was studied in the laboratory and field in Jamaica. Further field observations were conducted in Trinidad. 2. The sphecid, mud-daubing wasp Sceliphion assimile (Dahlbom) was the main host in Jamaica, but nineteen out of twenty-two investigated species of sphecid, eumenid and pompilid wasps, and apid and megachilid bees were attacked in Jamaica and Trinidad. The nineteen susceptible hosts suffered an average of 23.6% mortality due to Melittobia. Resin is a totally effective deterrent, spaces within the nest less so. 3. Laboratory studies on Sceliphron hosts estimated that developmental survival was greatest at 26°C and 83% r.h., duration of development shortest at 32°C and 72% r.h., longevity of adult fliers greatest (>13 days) at <25°C and 80% r.h., and fecundity greatest (454 eggs/female) at 28°C and 90% r.h. A separate experiment gave a maximum fecundity of 461. 4. At 27°C and 71% r.h. the duration of development (egg-adult) in the laboratory was 13.1 days for males, 13.9 days for crawlers and 17.4 days for fliers. 5. Field studies showed that developmental mortality was low, while laboratory studies revealed it to be density dependent, ranging from 13% at the lowest densities to 39% at the highest. Estimated mortality at field densities was ~25% on Sceliphron. 6. Field estimates of fecundity gave a mean of 429.5 eggs/female on Sceliphron but are positively biased by superparasitism. Fecundity is probably reduced to about 346 eggs in the field and further to about 289 as a result of superparasitism. Other hosts generally reduced the parasitoid's fecundity, and this always occurs when Melittobia becomes a hyperparasite. 7. Superparasitism in the field on Sceliphron was 2.3 females/host for crawler morph females, 1.2 females/host for jumper females and 1.2 females/host for flier females. 8. A cyclic budget using log10K; values (Freeman, 1976) revealed that the effect of superparasitism (K0= 0.124), the physical environment (K0= 0.078), developmental mortality (K1= 0.125), and the loss to males (K2= 0.020) to be small, but losses of dispersing females (k3= 2.326) to be massive. 9. The individual chance for the three female morphs of finding a new host are very different. For crawlers (which search the natal host nest) it is 0.034 (1 in 29), for jumpers (which search the host nesting site) it is 0.0098 (1 in 102) and for fliers (which seek distant host nesting sites) 0.0021 (1 in 485). Risk is thus directly proportional to distance travelled (cm, m and km). Morph production is related to this risk.  相似文献

Abstract

After occurring sporadically in New Zealand since 1921, the common wasp, Vespula vulgaris (L.), was found in March and April 1983 to be established in Dunedin, where 6 nests were discovered. Subsequent examination of museum specimens showed that queens had been collected in Wellington in 1978, and nests by January 1982. Christchurch was invaded in early 1984, several workers were collected near Auckland in March and April 1984, and workers were reported at Nelson in March and May 1984. The Dunedin nests were up to 6 times the size of nests recorded from the Northern Hemisphere, and produced up to 23 times as many new queens. Workers, nest size, and nest productivity were sufficiently different from those reported in western North America to suggest that the New Zealand population originated elsewhere. Colour patterning of the head and pronotum readily separate New Zealand V. vulgaris from New Zealand V. germanica. The nest carton of V. vulgaris is brown; that of V. germanica is grey. Conditions in New Zealand appear to be favourable for V. vulgaris; it can be expected to spread and it may at times reach the high population levels experienced in Europe and the western United States.  相似文献

Abstract

Previous reports of Carulaspis visci (Schrank) in New Zealand are considered to be misidentifications of C. juniperi (Bouché), the juniper scale. The known hosts (Cupressaceae and Taxodiaceae), distribution (all South Island localities), and a record of a parasite (Aspidiotiphagus citrinus (Craw), Aphelinidae) of C. juniperi in New Zealand are given.  相似文献

Abstract

Between 1977 and 1989 the social wasp Vespula germanicacolonised mainland Australia and became established in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Accidental transport between towns is the main mechanism of spread. In many towns wasp nests have not been detected until they became widespread; therefore, eradication is difficult Successful eradication has, however, been achieved in many other towns.

Nesting places vary considerably among localities but relatively little among years at anyone locality. Peak wasp abundance occurs between January and April. Control of V. germanica nests costs Australia an estimated $600,000 (Aust. $) annually.  相似文献

The development time, sex ratio and offspring production of Melittobia clavicornis reared with wild, facultative and factitious hosts are presented. Known hosts and different biological aspects presented in previously published reports are summarized and clarified. Immature development time was equivalent or slightly longer than that of other Melittobia species, and the sex ratio was approximately 97% female. Total offspring numbers were considerably lower than that of other Melittobia species using the same hosts. We report female dimorphism in this species for the first time. The number and relative proportion of brachypterous morph females produced was higher than that in other species of the genus.  相似文献

Abstract

A monotypic new genus, Bispiculum, is erected for B. inaequale n.sp. from the haemocoel of Platypus apicalis, P. caviceps, and P. gracilis, ambrosia beetles indigenous to New Zealand. B. inaequale is characterised by its possession of a pair of spicules and three rows of anal papillae in the male, and ‘escape-form’ juveniles. This is the first record of a tetradonematid in New Zealand, and the first of a tetradonematid from the Curculionidae. All stages are described, and the life history is discussed. The diagnosis of the Tetradonematidae is emended, the family is reviewed, and a key to species is provided.  相似文献

Abstract

Zygina medioborealis n.sp. is described from silver beet and carrots from Papua New Guinea. Indications are that this species, along with its close allies from Australia, New Zealand, and Norfolk Island, forms an incipient genus radically different from Palearctic and Nearctic Zygina Fieber. A few species of leafhopper and planthopper are listed, with their hosts; Cofana nigrilinea (Stål) is a new record for this locality.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A new fossil species of the genus Scutus (Scutus mirus n. sp.) is described from five Late Oligocene to Early Miocene (Waitakian to Altonian; 25.2–15.9?Ma) localities in the South Island, New Zealand. It is one of the oldest fossil species of Scutus known and probably inhabited very shallow, sub-tropical waters surrounding Zealandia during this time. The holotype of Scutus petrafixus Finlay, 1930 is re-examined; it is possibly from All Day Bay, Kakanui (Waitakian 25.2–21.7?Ma). The New Zealand species documented herein significantly expand our understanding of the fossil record of this shallow-marine molluscan lineage, and by proxy, also indicate the presence of very shallow coastal marine environments around the late Oligocene and early Miocene in southern Zealandia.  相似文献

In many parasitic hymenoptera copulation is preceded by elaborate courtship displays which include species-specific characteristics. Other features, shared by related species, may be used for defining higher taxa. The male's repertoire consists of movements involving the wings, legs, antennae, and mouthparts. These movements are performed continuously, or intermittently, depending on the species involved. The elements of a repertoire are repeated over and over again until the female indicates her readiness to copulate. Temporal patterning of various displays, and the timing of the female response are described. In Melittobia acasta (Walker) (Eulophidae) the male display is composed not only of repeating elements, but also includes new elements, introduced along the way; the display progresses towards a climactic finale. The timing of the female's copulation signal is accurately predictable. The morphology of Melittobia males is discussed in relation to this behaviour. Courtship of a related species, M.chalybii, is compared to the courtship of M.acasta.  相似文献

Abstract

The Australian giant bulldog ant Myrmecia brevinoda Forel was first observed in New Zealand in 1940 (Keall 1981). Further observations of this species were made at a location in Devonport in 1948 and 1965, and a nest destroyed at this site in 1981. Since this time no further observations have been made, yet the status of this species is commonly listed as “uncertain establishment” on New Zealand faunal lists. We describe the control procedure used in 1981. In addition, to determine its current status we resurveyed ants in the area of earlier infestation using visual searches, pitfall trapping, and a reward for discovery posted to local residents. No evidence of M. brevinoda was found, though several other invasive species were found, including the Argentine ant Linepithema humile (Mayr), Pheidole rugosula Forel, and a recently established Australian cryptic Solenopsis species. Given the results of our survey and the absence of other reports of M. brevinoda over the last 24 years, we consider this species to be extinct or eradicated from New Zealand.  相似文献

Abstract

Mnioloma fuscum, a liverwort species known to date primarily from tropical-montane regions, is reported for New Zealand for the first time. Its occurrence in New Zealand is unexpected as the next nearest known site is believed to be the Solomon Islands, some 3500 km distant. The occurrence of Mnioloma fuscum in New Zealand highlights the contribution tropical regions have made to the composition of New Zealand's hepatic flora.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Ophiocordyceps is a genus comprised by entomopathogenic fungi known to infect ten orders of insects, including Hymenoptera. Amongst the nearly 250 species described in the genus, few are known to manipulate their hosts, which are most notably ants. These species cause their hosts to die in an exposed position high above the ground while grabbing and/or biting the abaxial surface of leaves or branches, which in turn optimizes the fungus spore production and dispersal. Herein, we report on 14 social wasp species belonging to four genera (Agelaia, Mischocyttarus Polybia, and Pseudopolybia) infected by Ophiocordyceps humbertii, a common wasp pathogen. This study broadens the geographic and host range for O. humbertii and provides the first record of its ability to manipulate its host.  相似文献
