Mangrove forests are salt tolerant plants confined to the coastal areas and occupy only 5% of the total forest areas of the world. These are the most hostile environment with fluctuating tidal and saline regime and a limited plant species can survive under such condition. Nevertheless, these plants are most valuable resources and provide economic and ecological benefits to the coastal people. Several mangrove species have been used in traditional medicine or have few applications as insecticide and pesticide. Mangroves are biochemically unique, producing wide array of natural products with unique bioactivity. They possess active metabolites with some novel chemical structures which belong to diverse chemical classes such as alkaloids, phenol, steroids, terpenoids, tannins, etc. The present review examines recent investigations on the biological activities of extracts and phytochemicals identified from mangroves and their associates as antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, anticancer and many other properties like antiproliferative, insecticidal, antimalarial, antifeedant, central nervous system depressant and anti-plasmodial etc. The present article also emphasizes and creates an awareness of potential mangroves and their associates as a source of novel medicines, agrochemicals and source of many biologically active compounds.  相似文献

Aims Mangrove species are classified as true mangroves and mangrove associates. However, as for some fringe species found mainly on the landward transitional zones of mangroves, no consensus among scientists could be reached in favor of this classification and much debate arises. We hypothesized that true mangroves differ from mangrove associates physiologically and ecologically in their ability to survive in mangrove environment. Methods To test this hypothesis, leaf structural traits and osmotic properties were used to describe variation in 33 mangrove species (17 true mangroves, 6 mangrove associates and 10 controversial species).Important findings Specific leaf area (SLA) of true mangroves as well as leaf nitrogen concentration on a leaf mass (Nmass) were lower than that of mangrove associates; leaf succulence was, in general, twice as high in true mangroves compared to mangrove associates; true mangroves accumulated 8–9 times more Na and Cl than mangrove associates and the former had K/Na ratios <0.5, but the latter had K/Na ratios>0.5. These results indicated that true mangroves differed reliably from mangrove associates in leaf traits and osmotic properties. True mangroves are true halophytes and mangrove associates are glycophytes with certain salt tolerance. Combining distribution pattern information, the 10 controversial species were reclassified.  相似文献

The mangrove brachyuran fauna of Singapore and Malaysia is generally regarded as well studied. This is not the case. Over a hundred brachyuran species are now known from mangroves in Peninsular and East Malaysia, a substantial part of the known fauna in these waters. In Singapore, for example, of the approximately 350 brachyurans known, 76 (i.e. ca 22%) are mangal species. The systematics of several groups remain very unsatisfactory. The taxonomy of the Sesarminae, the largest subfamily of the Grapsidae and the dominant group in most mangroves, is still very unstable, with the identities of many ecologically important genera and species still unclear. A revision is still unavailable. Until recently, representatives of the families Hymenosomatidae and Leucosiidae were unknown from mangroves. Detailed collections and studies have resulted in the discovery of new genera and species from areas as purportedly well explored as Singapore. The Sarawak mangrove brachyuran crab fauna is based almost entirely on one paper written 40 years ago whilst that of Sabah is almost unknown. Although the state of mangal brachyuran systematics in Malaysia and Singapore is still in an exploratory phase, the mangroves in these two countries are relatively well-known compared to those of the surrounding regions. The present annotated checklist of mangal brachyuran species is intended to guide future systematic work in these countries, as well as to assist ecologists and other mangrove biologists. This is especially in view of the important role of crabs in mangroves.  相似文献

Since early human history, plants have served as the most important source of medicinal natural products, and even in the “synthetic age” the majority of lead compounds for pharmaceutical development remain of plant origin. In the marine realm, algae and seagrasses were amongst the first organisms investigated by marine natural products scientists on their quest for novel pharmaceutical compounds. Forty years after the pioneering work in the field of marine drug discovery began, the biodiversity of marine organisms investigated as potential sources of anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic compounds has increased tremendously. Nonetheless, marine plants are still an important source of novel secondary metabolites with interesting biomedical properties. The present review focuses on the antitumour properties of compounds isolated from marine algae, phytoplankton, mangroves, seagrasses, or cordgrasses. Compounds produced by marine epi- or endophytic fungi are also discussed.  相似文献

Along the west coast of South America mangroves are found only outside the area influenced by the cold Peruvian Current. At 6° S (near ‘Cerro Illescas’) the current turns west to the open sea in the direction of the Galapagos Islands. Dense mangrove vegetation with a tree height up to 15 m occurs only north of 3° 35′ S from the delta of the river Tumbes (Peru). At 3° 44′ S some small individuals of Rhizophora and at 5° 30′ S a small stand of Avicennia can be found. In the transition zone between 3° 35′ and 6° S no mangrove forest occurs. The reasons for the lack of mangal in the transition zone are:
  1. Evapotranspiration and atmospheric humidity show significant differences between the mangrove region and the transition zone. In this zone soil conditions like salinity, water and organic matter content and the geological structure can also be considered as inhibiting mangrove growth.
  2. Topographic conditions in this zone are not suitable for mangal and the lack of a regular annual flow from rivers provides a sharp limit for the existence of mangal in the delta of the river Tumbes. Nevertheless, cultivation of mangrove species south of the mangrove region is possible and seems promising.

Softwood bark is an important source for producing chemicals and materials as well as bioenergy. Extraction is regarded as a key technology for obtaining chemicals in general, and valorizing bark as a source of such chemicals in particular. In this paper, properties of 237 compounds identified in various studies dealing with extraction of softwood bark were described. Finally, some challenges and perspectives on the production of chemicals from bark are discussed.  相似文献

Floral scent chemistry of mangrove plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The flowers of mangrove plants are pollinated by a variety of pollinators including birds, bats, and insects. This study analyzed the floral scent chemistry of mangroves on Iriomote Island (located near Taiwan) including Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Lamk. (Rhizophoraceae), Kandelia candel (L.) Druce (Rhizophoraceae), Rhizophora stylosa Griff. (Rhizophoraceae), Sonneratia alba J. Smith (Sonneratiaceae), Nypa fruticans (Thunb.) Wurmb. (Palmae), Lumnitzera racemosa Willd. (Combretaceae), Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. (Avicenniaceae or Verbenaceae), and Pemphis acidula Forst. (Lythraceae). A total of 61 chemicals (fatty acid derivatives, terpenoids, carotenoid derivatives, benzenoids, nitrogen-containing compounds, 13 unknown chemicals) were detected in the floral scents of the various species. The species displayed a distinct chemical profile ranging from only two chemicals in the floral scent of Kandelia candel to more than 25 chemicals in the floral scent of Nypa fruticans. All of the identified chemicals have been found in the floral scents of other angiosperms. The chemical profile of some species can be correlated with their floral morphology and pollinators.  相似文献

In India, activities in the field of medicinal plants, including conservation of germplasm, have been enhanced significantly during the past couple of decades and a huge volume of data is being generated out of these works. For maintaining the records in a consolidated form, documentation is required to store and manage all information on the related studies. In accordance with the implementation of various plans and programmes, some pioneer organisations started developing databases on medicinal plants. Based on the knowledge on contemporary works, as collected from published literature and websites, this article presents information on current activities in India in two important aspects of the field, namely, (1) conservation of medicinal plants; and (2) management of data generated from such studies. Another important aspect of the article is the announcement of a plant conservation related software, ‘PlantCon’. This digitised database contains data of 40 selected nationally prioritised medicinal plants (list enclosed). The notable difference of ‘PlantCon’ from other databases lies in its conservation-related information which is up-to-date and covers a wide area of Indian geographical sites. The database provides information in a user-friendly manner.  相似文献

It has been estimated that plants are the most important source of medicine for more than 80% of the world’s population. Medicinal plants are a vital source of medication in developing countries. Despite the wealth of human experience and folklore concerning the medicinal uses of plants, proper scientific investigation has only been applied to a small fraction of the world’s plants. This is a cause of grave concern as plant species continue to disappear. A rapid response to this situation is urgently needed to prevent the disappearance of the plant species and the ethnopharmacological knowledge that accompanies them. In this review, recent work on the investigation of selected bioactive Thai medicinal plants is presented. Their biological activities against infectious diseases including antimalarial and anti-HIV, are highlighted, as well as their anticancer, antiulcer and anti-inflammatory properties. The chemical transformations of some selected compounds are discussed. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A general survey of the mangal at Port Stanley, Malekula, New Hebrides, the most extensive mangal in the archipelago, was conducted over an 11-day period in September/October 1971. Seventeen species of true mangrove tree and mangrove associates were recorded. As is characteristic of mangal, this flora was distributed in a zonal pattern, four zones being recognized. Certain anomalies in zonation were attributed to a recent episode of crustal uplift. The aquatic component of the fauna was dominated by molluscs (26 species) and Crustacea (20 species). The terrestrial vertebrate fauna consisted of 4 species of reptiles, 21 birds and 5 mammals.
The mangrove community at Port Stanley is an integral part of that of the Indo-West Pacific region. However it is much restricted in number of species, and reasons for this are suggested: distance from Malesia, lack of fresh water, and shallow soils with little silt deposition. Faunal impoverishment is clearly associated with floral impoverishment.  相似文献

Climate-change driven sea level rise causes a increase in salinity in coastal wetlands accelerating the alteration of the species composition. It triggers the gradual extinction of species, particularly the mangrove population which is intolerant of excessive salinity. Thus despite being crucial to a wide range of ecosystem services, mangroves have been identified as a vulnerable coastal biome. Hence restoration strategy of mangroves is undergoing rigorous research and experiments in literature at an interdisciplinary level. From a data-driven perspective, analysis of mangrove occurrence data could be the key to comprehend and predict mangrove behavior along different environmental parameters, and it could be important in formulating management strategy for mangrove rehabilitation and restoration. As salt marshes are the natural salt-accumulating halophytes, mitigating excessive salinity could be achieved by incorporating salt-marshes in mangrove restoration activities. This study intends to find a novel restoration strategy by assessing the frequent co-existence status of salt marshes, with the mangroves, and mangrove associates in different zones of degraded mangrove patches for species-rich plantation. To achieve this, we primarily design a novel methodological framework for the practice of knowledge discovery concerning the coexistence pattern of salt marshes, mangroves, and mangrove associates along with environmental parameters using a data mining paradigm of association rule mining. The proposed approach has the capability to uncover underlying facts and forecast likely facts that could automate the study in the field of ecological research to comprehend the occurrence of inter-species relationships. Our findings are based on published data gathered on the Sundarban Mangrove Forest, one of the world’s most important littoral forests. The existing literature reinforces the findings that include all the sets of frequently co-occurring mangroves, their associates, and salt marshes along the salinity gradient of coastal Sundarbans. A detailed understanding of the occurrence patterns of all these, along with the environmental variables, would be able to promote decision-making strategy. This framework is effective for both academia and stakeholders, especially the foresters/ conservation planners, to regulate the spread of salt marshes and the restoration of mangroves as well.  相似文献

Mangrove species are broadly classified as ‘true mangroves’ and ‘mangrove associates’. We hypothesized that the leaf litter decomposition rates of true mangroves differ significantly from the mangrove associates under the same ecological and bio-climatic conditions. In order to test this hypothesis, the leaf litter decay rates of 24 true mangrove species and 10 mangrove associates along with the concomitant carbon and nitrogen dynamics of the litters were studied in the tropical mangrove forest of Sundarban by means of litter bags. The decomposition was monitored for six consecutive weeks in the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon season. All the species in general went through a rapid decay phase in the first 2 weeks, however, the rate substantially decreased in the following 4 weeks. Most of the species studied had significant seasonal variability (p < 0.05) in the decay rate. Species-specific decay was highest throughout the monsoon and least during the post-monsoon season. The mean dry weight composition (i.e. percentage of dry weight of the leaf litters remaining at the end of weekly intervals) of the true mangroves was 10–12 % higher than the mangrove associates throughout the sampling period. The mean decay constants (K in week?1) of the true mangroves were 0.15 ± 0.05, 0.20 ± 0.06 and 0.16 ± 0.05 in the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon season respectively. The mangrove associates had significantly higher decay constants in the respective seasons that followed the order 0.23 ± 0.09, 0.25 ± 0.06 and 0.24 ± 0.09. As a consequence, the computed mean half-life period of the true mangrove litters (32 ± 11 days) was much higher than the mangrove associates (23 ± 11 days). This showed that collectively the leaf litters of mangrove associates degraded at a much faster rate than the true mangroves throughout the annual cycle and thus our hypothesis was justified.  相似文献

This paper presents a list of some medicinal plants distributed in the East Anatolia region. The list was prepared during an ethnobotanical survey of the region from 1995 to 2002. East Anatolia has a rich flora due to its variable climate and its many ecological zones. This diversity in flora provides a rich source of medicinal plants that has been long utilized by Anatolian cultures; and hence, accounts for the remarkable accumulation of medicinal folk knowledge for the region. This paper provides information about 71 useful plants grown in the region, 20 of which are reported for the first time. In addition to the scientific names, vernacular names and medicinal uses are given for each plant.  相似文献

The article presents new results on the structure and the above-ground biomass of the various population types of mangroves in French Guiana. Nine mangrove stands were studied, each composed of three to ten adjoining plots with areas that varied depending on the density of the populations. Structural parameters and indices were calculated. Individuals representative of the three groups of taxa present were felled:Avicennia germinans (L) Stearn, Rhizophora spp., and Laguncularia racemosa (L) Gaertn. The trunks, branches and leaves were sorted and weighed separately. The biomass was obtained by determining the allometric relationships, the general equation selected being of the type y = a o x a1, where the diameter (x) is the predictive variable. The total above-ground biomass varied from 31 t ha−1 for the pioneer stages to 315 t ha−1 for mature coastal mangroves, but with large variations depending on the structural characteristics at each site. The results place the Guianese mangroves among those with high biomass, although lower than those reported for Asia. Based on the relationships between structural parameters and standing biomass, in particular with the use of the “self-thinning rule”, population dynamics models are proposed. Scope and Background  This paper presents the preliminary results from an ongoing feasibility study, investigating potential application of elements from the life cycle assessment (LCA) framework in European chemicals’ policy. Many policy areas affect manufacturing, marketing and use of chemicals. This article focuses on the general chemical legislation, especially issues related to regulatory risk assessment and subsequent decisions on risk reduction measures. Method  Current and upcoming chemical regulation has been reviewed and empirical knowledge has been gained from an ongoing case study and from dialogues with various stakeholders. Results and Discussion  LCAs are comparative and more holistic in view as compared to chemical risk assessments for regulatory purposes1. LCAs may therefore potentially improve the basis for decisions between alternatives in cases where a risk assessment calls for risk reduction. In this process, LCA results might feed into a socio-economic analysis having similar objectives, but some methodological aspects related to system boundaries need to be sorted out. Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) of toxic effects has traditionally been inspired by the more regulatory-orientated risk assessment approaches. However, the increasing need for regulatory priority setting and comparative/ cumulative assessments might in the future convey LCIA principles into the regulatory framework. The same underlying databases on inherent properties of chemicals are already applied in both types of assessment. Similarly, data on the use and exposure of chemicals are needed within both risk assessments and LCA, and the methodologies might therefore benefit from a joint ‘inventory’ database. Outlook  The final outcome of the feasibility study will be an implementation plan suggesting incorporation of core findings in future chemical regulation and related policy areas.  相似文献

Biomarkers are becoming increasingly important in toxicology and human health. Many research groups are carrying out studies to develop biomarkers of exposure to chemicals and apply these for human monitoring. There is considerable interest in the use and application of biomarkers to identify the nature and amounts of chemical exposures in occupational and environmental situations. Major research goals are to develop and validate biomarkers that reflect specific exposures and permit the prediction of the risk of disease in individuals and groups. One important objective is to prevent human cancer. This review presents a commentary and consensus views about the major developments on biomarkers for monitoring human exposure to chemicals. A particular emphasis is on monitoring exposures to carcinogens. Significant developments in the areas of new and existing biomarkers, analytical methodologies, validation studies and field trials together with auditing and quality assessment of data are discussed. New developments in the relatively young field of toxicogenomics possibly leading to the identification of individual susceptibility to both cancer and non-cancer endpoints are also considered. The construction and development of reliable databases that integrate information from genomic and proteomic research programmes should offer a promising future for the application of these technologies in the prediction of risks and prevention of diseases related to chemical exposures. Currently adducts of chemicals with macromolecules are important and useful biomarkers especially for certain individual chemicals where there are incidences of occupational exposure. For monitoring exposure to genotoxic compounds protein adducts, such as those formed with haemoglobin, are considered effective biomarkers for determining individual exposure doses of reactive chemicals. For other organic chemicals, the excreted urinary metabolites can also give a useful and complementary indication of exposure for acute exposures. These methods have revealed ‘backgrounds’ in people not knowingly exposed to chemicals and the sources and significance of these need to be determined, particularly in the context of their contribution to background health risks.  相似文献
