Ultra-endurance performance is of increasing popularity. We investigated the associations between anthropometry, training and support during racing, with race performance in 67 male recreational ultra-endurance cyclists participating in the 'Swiss Cycling Marathon' over 600 kilometres, an official qualifier for the cycling ultra-marathon 'Paris-Brest-Paris'. The 54 finishers showed no differences in anthropometry and did not train differently compared to the 13 non-finishers. During the race, the finishers were significantly more frequently racing alone than being followed by a support crew. After bivariate analysis, percent body fat (r = 0.43), the cycling distance per training unit (r = -0.36), the duration per training unit (r = -0.31) and the sleep time during the race (r = 0.50) were related to overall race time. The 23 non-sleepers in the finisher group completed the race within (mean and IQR) 1,567 (1,453-1,606) min, highly significantly faster than the 31 sleepers with 1,934 (1,615-2,033) min (P = 0.0003). No variable of support during the race was associated with race time. After multivariate analysis, percent body fat (P = 0.026) and duration per training unit (P = 0.005) remained predictor variables for race time. To summarize, for a successful finish in a cycling ultra-marathon over 600 kilometres such as the 'Swiss Cycling Marathon', percent body fat and duration per training unit were related to race time whereas equipment and support during the race showed no association. Athletes with naps were highly significantly slower than athletes without naps.  相似文献

One hundred and seventy-two competitors of the Swiss Alpine Marathon, Davos, Switzerland, 1988, volunteered for this research project. Of these volunteers 170 (158 men, 12 women) finished the race (99%). The race length was 67 km with an altitude difference of 1,900 m between the highest and lowest points. Mean age was 39 (SEM 0.8) years. Average finishing times were 8 h 18 min (men) and 8 h 56 min (women). Loss of body mass averaged 3.4% body mass [mean 3.3 (SEM 0.2)%; 4.0 (SEM 0.4)%; men and women, respectively]. Blood samples from a subgroup of 89 subjects (6 women and 83 men) were taken prior to and immediately after completion of the race. Changes in haemoglobin (9.3 mmol.l-1 pre-race, 9.7 mmol.l-1 post-race) and packed cell volume (0.44 pre, 0.48 post-race) were in line with the moderate level of dehydration displayed by changes in body mass. Mean plasma volume decreased by 8.3%. No significant changes in plasma osmolality, sodium, or chloride were observed but plasma potassium did increase by 5% (4.2 mmol.l-1 pre-race, 4.4 mmol.l-1 post-race). Mean fluid consumption was 3290 (SEM 103) ml. Forty-three percent of all subjects, and 33% of those who gave blood samples, complained of gastro-intestinal (GI) distress during the race. No direct relationship was found between the quantity or quality of beverage consumed and the prevalence of GI symptoms.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In swimmers, the effects of the anthropometric factors, upper extremity length, hand length and body height, on performance over 100 m have been shown, but no data exist about the influence of anthropometric factors on performance in ultra-endurance swimmers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twelve male Caucasian ultra-swimmers participated in our study at the 9th edition in 2007 of the 12-hours-swim in Zurich, Switzerland. We determined body mass, length of arms and legs, body height, circumferences of extremities, skeletal muscle mass and fat mass in order to correlate with the covered distance and to find an effect on race performance. RESULTS: The 12 swimmers achieved an average distance of 29.4 +/- 5.1 km, varying from 22.8 km to 39.1 km during these 12 hours. There was no correlation between body mass, length of arms and legs, body height, circumferences of extremities, skeletal muscle mass and fat mass to race performance. CONCLUSION: In these 12 male ultra-endurance swimmers no effect of the anthropometric parameters body mass, body height, BMI, circumferences of extremities, length of arms and legs, skeletal muscle mass and fat mass, on performance in a 12-hours-swim has been found.  相似文献

Telemetered heart rates (HR) were correlated with social interactions of adult free-ranging Bighorn sheep (0vi.s canadensis canadensis). Minimal cardiac responses suggest that economy of expression is a pervasive feature of social behaviour in this species. Commonly performed courtship, dominance and agonistic displays elicited few HR responses in either sender or receiver; those that did occur, were transitory and usually accompanied motor reactions by the subject. Intense behavioural acts that occurred infrequently, such as mount attempts, rush-charges and clashes, evoked maximal HR increases in both performer and receiver. These findings are consistent with the complex social behaviour of Bighorn sheep and a life-strategy demanding frugal investment of resources in maintenance, in order to maximize growth and reproduction.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the physical and physiological demands of top-class soccer field (FR; n = 7) and assistant (AR; n = 7) referees during America's Cup. The FR and AR were equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) and a heart rate (HR) monitor for the recording of displacements and cardiovascular stress, respectively, every 5 and 15 minutes, halves, and entire match. High-intensity accelerations (ACs) and a new index of performance efficiency (Effindex) were also examined during each match. The FR completed longer distances for all walking and running activities and exhibited a greater match HR compared with the AR. The FR exhibited a significant reduction in the mean number of ACs during the second half (40 vs. 28), with a significantly worse Effindex at the end of both halves for FR and at the end of the second half for AR. A significant correlation between FR and AR for the number (r = 0.336; p = 0.03) and distance (r = 0.367; p = 0.017) of ACs performed each 5-minute period indicated a synchronization of officials' activities. In conclusion, top-class American FR and AR exhibited similar physical demands as previously reported by their European counterparts during international tournaments. The high number of AC observed, the effect of fatigue on these actions over the match, and the AC's synchronization between FR and AR suggest that ACs should be considered for the preparation of referees and team sport athletes. The Effindex may provide an important tool for the evaluation of referees' and players' performance that requires further investigation.  相似文献

Phlebotomus papatasi is the sandfly vector of Leishmania major in the Jordan Valley. The objective of this study was to characterize vector-parasite relations in an active zoonotic focus. Seasonality and intensity of promastigote infection rates in female sandflies and the developmental stage of these hosts were established. On 153 trap-nights, 641 female P. papatasi were caught and examined. Of these, 48 (7.4%, range 12.9-4.8%) were infected with L. major promastigotes. Correlating the number of parasites with the gonotrophic age of the vector revealed that most infections initially are light ones, and those that survive in the vector generally prosper and proliferate. Comparing infection rates in parous and gravid flies revealed that similar proportions of gravid and parous flies are found infected. Thus, Leishmania infections do not appear to affect sandfly survival.  相似文献

The purpose of the present investigation was to describe the physiological changes of a nationally ranked older elite freestyle wrestler during a 7-month observation period as he prepared for the 2000 Olympic freestyle wrestling trials. A 33-year-old male wrestler was evaluated 3 times during the study for measurements of body composition, resting energy expenditure, maximal oxygen consumption, isometric strength, anaerobic power and capacity, nutritional intake, and various serum plasma constituents. Body weight decreased by 1 kg, which consisted of fat-free mass (FFM), whereas body fat remained stable at 5.8%. Muscular strength and aerobic power were maintained throughout the study. Measures of anaerobic work capacity tended to be higher and blood lactate lower as the subject progressed throughout the investigation. All serum plasma constituents were within clinically normal ranges and remained relatively stable. Despite a small loss of FFM, the subject was able to maintain muscular strength and aerobic fitness while concomitantly enhancing anaerobic capacity and power capabilities throughout the study period as he prepared for the 2000 Olympic freestyle wrestling trials.  相似文献

The aim of this case study was to describe the physiological and regulatory processes, by means of heart rate (HR) monitoring and pacing strategy, in a top-level race walker (age: 32 years; height: 1.76 m; body mass: 62 kg; training volume: 130-150 km·wk) who was focused on the attainment of the 5-km indoor race walk (RW) World Record. The HRmean was 185 ± 14.9 b·min, with an HRmean/HRmax ratio of 0.96. Almost the whole race (91.8%) was performed to an intensity ≥90% of the HRmax; lower intensity work was negligible (8.1%). The race profile was a reverse J-shaped pacing curve; in fact, the athlete completed the first 1,000 m in the fastest time, slowing during the middle 3,000 m, and increasing the speed during the final 1,000 m of the race. Despite the attempt failed (the athlete performed only the 2009 World leading performance, 18 minutes 23 seconds 47 tenths), these data suggest that a more linear strain distribution for the entire performance would be optimal instead of a fast-start strategy, which leads to a drastic decrement of the walking velocity. Moreover, this study supports the use of HR monitoring combined with the regulation of the effort to understand the physiological and regulatory processes during an indoor RW event.  相似文献

Surveys in 1969/1970, 1979/1980, and 1989/ 1990 assessed physical fitness among adult Inuit living in Igloolik, Northwest Territories, Canada, during a period of rapid acculturation to a sedentary lifestyle. MANOVA for age, cohort, and age-cohort effects indicated significant trends to greater skinfold readings [male (M) and female (F)] and body mass (F only), a lower handgrip and knee extension force (M and F), and lower step test predictions of aerobic power (M and F) in the more recent cohorts, with no change of forced vital capacity, 1-s forced expiratory volume, or hemoglobin level. By 1989/1990, continuing hunters tended to have thicker skinfolds than other villagers, and showed no advantage of aerobic power. The average fitness of the sample when tested in 1989/1990 was comparable with that of sedentary populations in Southern Canada, but a minority of villagers who now practiced regular sport had conserved the high levels of fitness that were observed in 1969/1970. We conclude that the fitness of this community appears to have deteriorated markedly as it has become more sedentary, and we thus recommend that health authorities develop methods of promoting an active lifestyle that are culturally appropriate to the populations of circumpolar settlements.  相似文献

This study assessed selected measures of cognitive function in trained cyclists who observed daylight fasting during Ramadan. Eleven cyclists volunteered to participate (age: 21.6±4.8 years, VO2max: 57.7±5.6 ml kg−1·min−1) and were followed for 2 months. Cognitive function (Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), Reaction Time index (RTI) and Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVP) tests) and sleep architecture (ambulatory EEG) were assessed: before Ramadan (BR), in the 1st week (RA1) and 4th week of Ramadan (RA4), and 2 weeks post-Ramadan (PR). Both cognitive tests were performed twice per day: before and after Ramadan at 8-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m., and during Ramadan at 4-6 p.m. and 0-2 a.m., respectively. Training load (TL) by the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) method and wellness (Hooper index) were measured daily. If the TL increased over the study period, this variable was stable during Ramadan. The perceived fatigue and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) increased at RA4. Sleep patterns and architecture showed clear disturbances, with significant increases in the number of awakenings and light sleep durations during Ramadan (RA1 and RA4), together with decreased durations of deep and REM sleep stages at PR. RTI (simple and multiple reaction index) reaction and movement times did not vary over the study period. The RVP test showed reduced false alarms during Ramadan, suggesting reduced impulsivity. Overall accuracy significantly increased at RA1, RA4 and PR compared to baseline. At RA4, the accuracy was higher at 0-2 a.m. compared to 4-6 p.m. Despite the observed disturbances in sleep architecture, Ramadan fasting did not negatively impact the cognitive performance of trained cyclists from the Middle East.  相似文献

The present study aimed to experimentally evaluate the effect of early morning shifts on sleep and sleepiness of train drivers during normal working conditions. A total of 17 experienced train drivers were studied during a 4.5 h drive in two directions with a 2.5 h break in between on three different shifts: an early shift that started at 05:49 h (train left at 06:18 h) and ended at 17:41h, a day shift (07:49-19:41 h), and an evening shift (09:49-21:41 h). Retrospective (since the last stop) ratings of mean sleepiness and peak sleepiness (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale--KSS: 1 = very alert, 9= very sleepy, fighting sleep, difficulty staying awake) were assessed at each stop during the drive. The results showed that sleep length was reduced (p <0.001) by 1 h and 2h, respectively, by the early shift compared to the day and evening shifts. The prevalence of severe sleepiness (KSS > or = 7) was high, especially during the early shift when 14 (82%) subjects reported at least one event during the drive. Application of the Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM) to the sleepiness data showed that there was an increased risk for severe sleepiness during the early shift (OR = 4.9) that increased further with the length of the drive between stops (OR = 1.9, 15 min), suggesting an interaction between early morning shift and monotony. The findings have practical implications in risk assessment. Long drives without stops and other monotonous situations should have a higher risk rating for severe sleepiness in shifts with an early start before 06:00 h, compared to shifts that begin 2 h later.  相似文献

Zulema Valdez and Tanya Golash-Boza offer an integrative framework for the sociology of race and ethnicity to bridge a divide undergirding different, yet related perspectives in the field. Their work provides an initial roadmap for linking the cultural perspectives often taken in the study of ethnicity to the structural perspectives utilized in the study of race. The authors put these perspectives in dialogue with one another to elucidate the strength of integrating commonly used approaches in each area, while avoiding the pitfalls of relying only on one paradigm. Behind much of sociology’s theoretical developments to understand racial and ethnic groups’ experiences in US society, and in relation to global discussions of race and ethnicity as well, are influences of identity and ideological processes inflected and reflected by whiteness. This comment reflects on how these processes can shape future conversations considering the intertwined cultural and structural processes framing group experiences and life chances.  相似文献

Autotetraploids are predicted to have reduced inbreeding depression relative to diploids. However, recent theory and information on genomic changes following autopolyploidy suggest that inbreeding depression may be closer to diploids. In three consecutive years, self and outcross pollinations were conducted on autotetraploid Campanulastrum americanum, seeds were planted into native sites, and biennial offspring were followed through seed production. Inbred individuals had lower germination rates, reduced survival, were smaller, and flowered later, producing fewer fruits with fewer seeds. Inbred offspring had 6% of the cumulative fitness of outcross offspring. Although performance varied substantially among cohorts, inbreeding depression for cumulative fitness was relatively constant, with delta ranging only from 0.92 to 0.95. C. americanum, like many outcrossing species, expressed very high amounts of inbreeding depression. This supports the hypothesis that inbreeding depression of some autotetraploids may be similar to that of diploids. Furthermore, few studies have measured temporal variation in inbreeding depression. Constant inbreeding depression given a sixfold range in cohort performance suggests that inbreeding depression may be relatively robust to environmental variation experienced by natural populations.  相似文献

The study had three purposes: to verify a hypothesized speed decrease during the 15 km cross-country sit skiing (CCSS) race; documenting this possible fatigue effect (speed decrease), to evaluate changes among the four laps in kinematics parameters (cycle speed, cycle duration, cycle length, duty cycle (percentage ratio between pushing and total cycle duration), pole inclination, trunk inclination and shoulder–hand distance); to compare the kinematics parameters in cross-country sit skiers of different level. Video recordings were carried out during the 2006 Turin Winter Paralympic Games with two conventional digital video-cameras positioned on a flat and an uphill (8.3°) track, respectively. Better performing skiers (G1) had significantly higher speeds than worse performers (G2) both in the flat (6.54 ± 0.13 vs. 5.89 ± 0.50 m s?1 and 5.55 ± 0.14 vs. 4.62 ± 0.22 m s?1 in the first and last lap, respectively) and in the uphill track (3.67 ± 0.45 vs. 3.05 ± 0.59 m s?1 and 3.20 ± 0.36 vs. 2.26 ± 0.36 m s?1 in the first and last lap, respectively). The G1 athletes were able to maintain the high-speed better than the G2 over the entire race. Significant differences in cycle length and duty cycle between groups would be justified by the higher physical fitness of G1 skiers.  相似文献

We conducted field‐cage studies on the direct interactions between a coccinellid species native to North America, Coleomegilla maculata De Geer, and a species introduced from Asia, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). We compared the mortality and weight gain of larvae of both species in field cages that enclosed one or both species with corn plants containing high or low aphid numbers. We did not find a significant effect of the presence of H. axyridis on the survival or weight gain of C. maculata, but H. axyridis larvae weighed more when kept with C. maculata for 5 days than when kept with equal numbers of conspecifics. This suggests that intraspecific competition was stronger for H. axyridis than the interspecific competition with C. maculata. The spatial distribution of C. maculata over the plants differed between single‐species and two‐species treatments in a manner that suggested that this species avoided interactions with H. axyridis.  相似文献

This paper investigates ventricular assist device (VAD)-assisted cardiovascular dynamics under proportion-integration-differentiation (PID) feedback control. Previously, we have studied the cardiovascular responses under the support of an in-series connected reciprocating-valve VAD through numerical simulation, and no feedback control was applied in the VAD. In this research, we explore the contribution of the VAD control on the circulatory dynamics assisted by the reciprocating-valve VAD, in response to the changing physiological conditions. The classical PID control algorithm is implemented to regulate the VAD stroke beat-to-beat, based on the error signal between the expected and the realistic mean aortic pressures. Simulation results show that under the PID VAD control, physiological variables such as left atrial, ventricular and systemic arterial pressures, cardiac output and ventricular volumes are satisfactorily maintained in the physiological ranges. With the online PID feedback control, operation of the reciprocating-valve VAD can be satisfactorily regulated to accommodate metabolic requirements under various physiological conditions including normal resting and exercise situations.  相似文献
