Data transfer is one of the main functions of the Internet. The Internet consists of a large number of interconnected subnetworks or domains, known as Autonomous Systems (ASes). Due to privacy and other reasons the information about what route to use to reach devices within other ASes is not readily available to any given AS. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is responsible for discovering and distributing this reachability information to all ASes. Since the topology of the Internet is highly dynamic, all ASes constantly exchange and update this reachability information in small chunks, known as routing control packets or BGP updates. In the view of the quick growth of the Internet there are significant concerns with the scalability of the BGP updates and the efficiency of the BGP routing in general. Motivated by these issues we conduct a systematic time series analysis of BGP update rates. We find that BGP update time series are extremely volatile, exhibit long-term correlations and memory effects, similar to seismic time series, or temperature and stock market price fluctuations. The presented statistical characterization of BGP update dynamics could serve as a basis for validation of existing and developing better models of Internet interdomain routing.  相似文献

BackgroundThere has been an increasing popularity of searching health related information online in recent years. Despite that considerable amount of scoliosis patients have shown interest in obtaining scoliosis information through Internet, previous studies have demonstrated poor quality of online information. However, this conclusion may vary depending on region and culture. Since China has a restricted Internet access outside of its borders, the aim of this study is to evaluate the quality of scoliosis information available online using recognized scoring systems and to analyze the Internet as a source of health information in China.MethodsA survey-based questionnaire was distributed to 280 respondents at outpatient clinics. Information on demographics and Internet use was collected. Binary logistic analysis was performed to identify possible predictors for the use of Internet. In addition, the top 60 scoliosis related websites assessed through 4 search engines were reviewed by a surgeon and the quality of online information was evaluated using DISCERN score and JAMA benchmark.ResultsUse of the Internet as a source for scoliosis related information was confirmed in 87.8% of the respondents. College education, Internet access at home and urban residence were identified as potential predictors for Internet use. However, the quality of online scoliosis related information was poor with an average DISCERN score of 27.9±11.7 and may be misleading for scoliosis patients.ConclusionThe study outlines the profile of scoliosis patients who use the Internet as a source of health information. It was shown that 87.8% of the scoliosis patients in outpatient clinics have searched for scoliosis related information on Internet. Urban patients, higher education and Internet access at home were identified as potential predictors for Internet search. However, the overall quality of online scoliosis related information was poor and confusing. Physician based websites seemed to contain more reliable information.  相似文献

Cancer is a major health problem worldwide which is likely to assume alarming proportions in the next two decades. Communication and information have increasingly been considered important in helping people to cope with cancer. The arrival of Internet offers the opportunity to fundamentally reinvent medicine and health care delivery. Medical professionals can now use the Internet for continuing medical education, access latest medical information, for fast confirmation of diagnosis, exchange opinion on treatment strategies and in palliative care. Internet can provide cost-effective and timely ways to deliver a complex mix of interesting and high-quality information and expertise to cancer patients. Patients can also independently search the Internet to know about their illness and treatment options. However, of concern is the quality of information that is available in the 'Net'. Some Internet sites may contain erroneous information on cancer and can pose serious problems. There are also many good sites, which provide quality information on cancer for medical professionals, researchers and patients. This article focuses on how the Internet will aid us in fight against cancer.  相似文献

A database for cell signaling networks.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We developed a data and knowledge base for cellular signal transduction in human cells, to make this rapidly growing information available. The database includes all the biological properties of cellular signal transduction, including biological reactions that transfer cellular signals and molecular attributes characterized by sequences, structures, and functions. Since the database is based on the object-oriented technique, highly flexible methods of data definition and modification are necessary to handle this diverse and complex biological information. The database includes attractive graphical representations of signaling cascades and the three-dimensional structure of molecules. The database is a novel application of ACEDB, which was the database originally developed to store the C. elegans genome. The database can be accessed through the Internet at http://geo.nihs.go.jp/csndb.html.  相似文献

HOWDY: an integrated database system for human genome research   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
HOWDY is an integrated database system for accessing and analyzing human genomic information (http://www-alis.tokyo.jst.go.jp/HOWDY/). HOWDY stores information about relationships between genetic objects and the data extracted from a number of databases. HOWDY consists of an Internet accessible user interface that allows thorough searching of the human genomic databases using the gene symbols and their aliases. It also permits flexible editing of the sequence data. The database can be searched using simple words and the search can be restricted to a specific cytogenetic location. Linear maps displaying markers and genes on contig sequences are available, from which an object can be chosen. Any search starting point identifies all the information matching the query. HOWDY provides a convenient search environment of human genomic data for scientists unsure which database is most appropriate for their search.  相似文献

The benefits to medical practitioners of using the Internet are growing rapidly as the Internet becomes easier to use and ever more biomedical resources become available on line. The Internet is the largest computer network in the world; it is also a virtual community, larger than many nation states, with its own rules of behaviour or "netiquette." There are several types of Internet connection and various ways of acquiring a connection. Once connected, you can obtain, free of charge, programs that allow easy use of the Internet''s resources and help on how to use these resources; you can access many of these resources through the hypertext references in the on line version of this series (go to http:@www.bmj.com/bmj/ to reach the electronic version). You can then explore the various methods for accessing, manipulating, or disseminating data on the Internet, such as electronic mail, telnet, file transfer protocol, and the world wide web. Results from a search of the world wide web for information on the rare condition of Recklinghausen''s neurofibromatosis illustrate the breadth of medical information available on the Internet.  相似文献

Many organizations are currently working on how to express and provide location information to services and applications in the Internet. Each of them basically specifies their own way. This raises a problem – the various location information formats, services and applications will not be interoperable in the Internet. Interoperability can be achieved if there is a common way of expressing location information. This paper therefore proposes a common data set and an extensible framework of expressing location information in the Internet. The design aims at bridging various existing/proposed location data representation formats, as well as meeting the requirements of existing/proposed location-aware services.  相似文献

The Internet is reshaping the way people access health information. Over the past decades, an increasing number of people have been using the Internet to access vaccine-related information. Many studies suggest that the Internet can help improve people’s understanding of health issues but at the same time facilitate the rapid spread of misinformation. This study explores the impact that searching the Internet for immunization information has on vaccination coverage. Using Google trends data, we found that access to online vaccination information has impacted vaccine uptake from 2004 to 2017, in Sub-Saharan African countries. The results indicate an overall positive impact on vaccine uptake. We also found that the effects are heterogeneous among vaccines. The effect is statistically significant for the vaccine related to high-risk disease, but not significant for the controversial vaccine and the vaccine related to low-risk disease.  相似文献

Molecular Probe Data Base contains detailed information on synthetic oligonucleotides with a sequence of up to 100 nucleotides. This database prevalently contains information related to human oligonucleotides used in diagnostics. Molecular Probe Data Base has been made available on-line through the Internet by means of Network Information Retrieval (NIR) tools since 1993. Two years ago, a collaboration with EMBL Data Library was also set up, so that the Molecular Probe Data Base has been integrated with other molecular biology data banks in the sphere of the SRS WWW network browser. In this paper, the most recent enhancements and the current status of the Molecular Probe Data Base are briefly presented.  相似文献

The GENETPIG database has been established for storing and disseminating the results of the European project: 'GENETPIG: identification of genes controlling economic traits in pig'. The partners of this project have mapped about 630 porcine and human ESTs onto the pig genome. The database collects the mapping results and links them to other sources of mapping data; this includes pig maps as well as available comparative mapping information. Functional annotation of the mapped ESTs is also given when a significant similarity to cognate genes was established. The database is accessible for consultation via the Internet at http://www.infobiogen.fr/services/Genetpig/.  相似文献

Network attacks, such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) and Internet worms, are highly distributed and well coordinated offensive assaults on services, hosts, and the infrastructure of the Internet, and can have disastrous effects including financial losses and disruption of essential services. Consequently, effective defensive countermeasures against these attacks must provide equally sophisticated and well coordinated mechanisms for monitoring, analysis, and response. In this paper, we investigate techniques for cooperative attack detection and countermeasures using decentralized information sharing. The key underlying idea is the use of epidemic algorithms to share attack information and achieve quasi-global knowledge about attack behaviors. This paper first presents a conceptual model that defines the relationships between the level of knowledge in the distributed system and the accuracy of attack detection. The design of a cooperative attack detection and defense framework is then presented, and its use for detecting and defending against DDoS attacks and Internet worms is described. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework against these attacks.  相似文献

Background

The Internet is the world's largest network of information, communication and services. Although the Internet is widely used in medicine and has made significant impact in research, training and patient care, few studies had explored the extent to which Nigerian physicians use Internet resources for patient care. The objective of this study was to assess physicians' use of the Internet for health information for patient care.

Method

172 physicians at the University College hospital (UCH) Ibadan, Nigeria; completed a 31-item, anonymous, standardized questionnaire. The Epi-Info software was used for data analysis.

Results

The mean age of the respondents was 31.95 years (SD 4.94). Virtually all (98%) the respondents had used the Internet; 76% accessed it from cyber cafes. E-mail was the most commonly used Internet service (64%). Ninety percent of the respondents reported they had obtained information from the Internet for patient care; of this number, 76.2% had searched a database. The database most recently searched was MEDLINE/PubMed in 99% of cases. Only 7% of the respondents had ever searched the Cochrane Library. More than half (58.1%) perceived they had no confidence to download full-text articles from online sources such as the Health Internetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI). Multiple barriers to increased use of the Internet were identified including poor availability of broadband (fast connection speed) Internet access, lack of information searching skills, cost of access and information overload.

Conclusion

Physicians' use of the Internet for health information for patient care was widespread but use of evidenced-based medicine resources such as Cochrane Library, Up-to-date and Clinical Evidence was minimal. Awareness and training in the use of EBM resources for patient care is needed. Introduction of EBM in the teaching curriculum will enhance the use of EBM resources by physicians for patient care.
