The community structure of zooplankton was studied in a eutrophic, fishless Japanese pond. The ecosystem was dominated by a dinoflagellate,Ceratium hirundinella, two filter-feeding clado-cerans, Daphniarosea and Ceriodaphnia reticulata, and an invertebrate predator, the dipteran Chaoborus flavicans. The midsummer zooplanktoncommunity showed a large change in species composition (theDaphnia population crashed) when a heavy Ceratium bloom occurred. It is shown that (i) the rapid density decline of D.rosea inmid-May was mainly caused by a shortage of edible phytoplankton, which was facilitated by the rapid increase in Chirundinellaabundance; (ii) the low density of D.rosea in June-July wasconsidered to be mainly caused by the blooming of Ceratium hirundinella(which may inhibit the feeding process of D.rosea), while predationby Cflavicans larvae, the changing temperature, the interspecificcompetition and the scarcity of edible algae were not judgedto be important; (iii) the high summer biomass of the planktonicCflavicans larvae was maintained by the bloom of C.hirundinella, because >90% of the crop contents of C.flavicans larvae wereC.hirundinella during this period. The present study indicatesthat the large-sized cells or colonies of phytoplankton arenot only inedible by most cladocerans, but the selective effectof the blooming of these algae can also influence the compositionand dominance of the zooplankton community, especially for thefilter-feeding Cladocera, in a similar way as the selectivepredation by planktivorous fish. The large-sized phytoplanktoncan also be an important alternative food for ominivorous invertebratepredators such as Chaoborus larvae, and thus may affect theinteractions between these predators and their zooplanktonicprey. In this way, such phytoplankton may play a very importantrole in regulating the dynamics of the aquatic food web, andbecome a driving force in shaping the community structure ofzooplankton.  相似文献

Horizontal distribution of the dinoflagellateCeratium hirundinella (O. F. Müller) Bergh in the Ishitegawa Reservoir, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, was investigated. Water quality was also surveyed. It was observed that the population ofC. hirundinella exponentially decreased in number from the head of the reservoir to the dam site. Further investigation proved thatC. hirundinella initiated growth at the head of the reservoir, and later gradually expanded downstream. It was found during the period of increase in water temperature that the cell density ofC. hirundinella at the uppermost station exponentially increased.  相似文献

Large-sized Daphnia hyalina×galeata hybrid and small-sized Ceriodaphnia reticulata were raised together for 3 weeks in thermally stratified flow-through tubes ('plankton organ'), in the presence and the absence of fish kairomone, and their relative performance was monitored, as indicated by the populations' growth rates (r). In the kairomone-free medium, D. hyalina grew faster than C. reticulata; the presence of kairomone reversed this ratio, producing relatively higher r in C. reticulata. The simulated fish presence reduced growth in D. hyalina population also when it was separated from the competitor, while growth in C. reticulata was altered by the kairomone only in the presence of Daphnia. It is suggested that costs of surface avoidance in Daphnia can reduce its competitive superiority to small-sized cladocerans, permanently dwelling at the surface.  相似文献

The presence of plankton predators may induce altered morphology in their potential prey. To date, the mechanism of induction and adaptive value of such defensive responses have been examined in the laboratory. This study investigated the morphological defense structures induced by the invertebrate predator Chaoborus in two coexisting Daphnia species, D. pulex and D. rosea, in the field. In Piscivore Lake (Gr?fenhain, Germany), continuous and intense biomanipulation had led to near elimination of planktivorous fish and greatly increased abundances of Chaoborus (up to >10 larvae l–1). Here, the density of Chaoborus was manipulated within the lake by an enclosure/exclosure setup and resulting morphological responses of Daphnia spp. were investigated in situ. Three replicate enclosures (4.6 m3) contained no Chaoborus (predator exclusion bags), whereas Chaoborus entered three others at ambient densities (predator enclosures). In both species of Daphnia, formation of neckteeth and elongation of the tail spine were recorded in the predator enclosures, but not in the predator exclusion treatments. Additionally, D. rosea responded to predator inclusion with an increase of the size at first reproduction. Despite the induced defense structures, the presence of Chaoborus caused increased mortality of both Daphnia species. In addition, Chaoborus affected the coexistence of the two populations of Daphnia by causing higher relative mortality in D. rosea. Neckteeth formation was always more pronounced in D. pulex than in D. rosea of the same size. Neckteeth were induced specifically in vulnerably sized juvenile instars of D. pulex, but were not found in all vulnerable instars of D. rosea. In D. rosea, neckteeth were few or absent in the ephippial hatchlings, and neckteeth formation ceased before juveniles reached a body size outside the range that larger larval stages of Chaoborus could ingest. This study provides the first experimental demonstration in the field of the inducibility of morphological defense structures in Daphnia at ambient densities of Chaoborus larvae, and quantifies these in situ responses. This expands on earlier observations of a correlation between predator density in the field and the expression of neckteeth in Daphnia. The term ”maximum size for neckteeth formation” (MSNF) is defined as the limit in body size above which no production of neckteeth was evident. This limit was used to distinguish the size classes of Daphnia that show a sensitive response to Chaoborus kairomone. This new term may be used for further comparisons among species and among different types of predator-induced responses as well as for the evaluation of the adaptive value of defense structures. Catinaria grossa is lichenized withDictyochloropsis splendida var.gelatinosa, var. nova. When cultured isolated from the fungus the cells of this variety are covered individually by thick gelatinous envelopes. The phycobionts ofMegalospora gompholoma subsp.gompholoma andM. atrorubicans subsp.australis belong to a new variety ofD. symbiontica, i.e. var.pauciautosporica, which preferentially reproduces by zoo- and aplanospores. The phycobiont ofPseudocyphellaria aurata does not belong toMyrmecia reticulata as formerly thought, but toDictyochloropsis symbiontica. Specimens from one locality in Tenerife and from New Zealand are lichenized with a strain ofD. symbiontica var.symbiontica, those from another locality in Tenerife with a strain ofD. symbiontica var.pauciautosporica. These strains differ in certain characters from other lichenized strains of these varieties.

Primary production of phytoplankton and secondary production of a daphnid and a chaoborid were studied in a small eutrophic pond. The gross primary production of phytoplankton was 290 gC m−2 per 9 months during April–December. Regression analysis showed that the gross primary production was related to the incident solar radiation and the chlorophylla concentration and not to either total phosphorus or total inorganic nitrogen concentration. The mean chlorophylla concentration (14.2 mg m−3), however, was about half the expected value upon phosphorus loading of this pond. The mean zooplankton biomass was 1.60 g dry weight m−2, of whichDaphnia rosea and cyclopoid copepods amounted to 0.69 g dry weight m−2 and 0.61 g dry weight m−2, respectively. The production ofD. rosea was high during May–July and October and the level for the whole 9 months was 22.6 g dry weight m−2.Chaoborus flavicans produced 10 complete and one incomplete cohorts per year. Two consecutive cohorts overlapped during the growing season. The maximum density, the mean biomass, and the production were 19,100 m−2, 0.81 g dry weight m−2, and 11.7 g dry weight m−2yr−1, respectively. As no fish was present in this pond, the emerging biomass amounted to 69% of larval production. The production ofC. flavicans larvae was high in comparison with zooplankton production during August–September, when the larvae possibly fed not only on zooplankton but also algae.  相似文献

The interaction between Trichoderma pseudokoningii (Rifai) 511, 2212, 741A, 741B and 453 and the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi Glomus mosseae (Nicol. & Gerd.) Gerdemann & Trappe BEG12 and Gigaspora rosea Nicolson & Schenck BEG9 were studied in vitro and in greenhouse experiments. All T. pseudokoningii strains inhibited the germination of G. mosseae and Gi. rosea except the strain 453, which did not affect the germination of Gi. rosea. Soluble exudates and volatile substances produced by all T. pseudokoningii strains inhibited the spore germination of G. mosseae. The germination of Gi. rosea spores was inhibited by the soluble exudates produced by T. pseudokoningii 2212 and 511, whereas T. pseudokoningii 714A and 714B inhibited the germination of Gi. rosea spores by the production of volatile substances. The strains of T. pseudokoningii did not affect dry matter and percentage of root length colonization of soybean inoculated with G. mosseae, except T. pseudokoningii 2212, which inhibited both parameters. However, all T. pseudokoningii strains decreased the shoot dry matter and the percentage of AM root length colonization of soybean inoculated with Gi. rosea. The saprotrophic fungi tested seem to affect AM colonization of root by effects on the presymbiotic phase of the AM fungi. No influence of AM fungi on the number of CFUs of T. pseudokoningii was found. The effect of saprotrophic fungi on AM fungal development and function varied with the strain of the saprotrophic species tested.  相似文献

Colonies ofBelonogaster petiolata in Gauteng (South Africa) produced reproductive offspring (gynes and males) in late January and early February of each nesting season; their appearance was associated with a decline in worker and brood numbers. Brood decline could commence in the presence of a dominant, reproductively active queen, and loss or removal of the queen was not followed directly by cessation of nest growth and brood care. An older worker usually took over the α-position in queenless colonies. Several factors appear to contribute to brood decline and, ultimately, termination of the colony cycle in this species. These include (1) cessation of the supply of solid food to colonies (and particularly their larvae) during the reproductive phase, (2) a decrease in the worker/larva ratio during the latter phase due to the progressive loss of workers, (3) increasing number of gynes and males, and (4) an adult priority over food reception from foragers.  相似文献

Summary Nine nests ofLasioglossum (Dialictus) tenax were excavated near Calgary, Alberta, Canada over a time period encompassing the entire brood production period in 1988. Each nest contained a maximum of one active adult female, nest productivity peaked in mid July, protandry was noted and no significant size difference between foundresses and the earlier emerging females was detected. These data suggest that this species is solitary. These results are compared with data for the sympatrically nesting eusocial speciesL. (D.) laevissimum.  相似文献

Changes in the density of 2 populations of Bosmina longirostris, Holopedium gibberum and Codonella cratera were correlated through multiple regression analyses with shifts in temperature, light, nannoplankton densities and seston weight. Sampling took place every 2 weeks between June 1975 and November 1976 in the Yellowknife River and Yellowknife Bay, both in the Canadian subarctic. Temperature was usually the main factor influencing all 3 species, accounting for up to 60% of the seasonal variability in B. longirostris, 37% in H. gibberum and 62% in Codonella cratera. Seston (the major food source) ranked second overall and in one instance accounted for 60% of density changes in B. longirostris. Nannoplankton were consumed in only small numbers and had little influence on densities. Light was of minor importance to all species. Temperature was also the main factor effecting reproduction and feeding in B. longirostris and H. gibberum (the only species studied). The simultaneous collections of Ceratium hirundinella made in the river and bay indicated that temperature accounted for 30–55% of the seasonal variability of this species, followed by light (4% and nutrients (3–4%).  相似文献

Based on light and electron microscopical studies ofPyramimonas reticulata the genusPyramimonas is shown to contain a number of unrelated flagellates.P. reticulata andP. montana are transferred to the new genusHafniomonas, cells of which differ fromPyramimonas in shape, in the absence of scales and hairs on the body and flagellar surfaces, in details of the chloroplast, the position of the nucleus, the Golgi apparatus, the internal structure of the flagellar apparatus, and in cell division. The prasinophytePyramimonas contains a characteristic association of a large microbody and a rhizoplast, situated on the nuclear surface. A similar association is being found in an increasing number of prasinophycean flagellates, but is absent inHafniomonas, which is considered related to chlorophycean rather than prasinophycean flagellates. The phylogenetic position ofHafniomonas is discussed, based in particular on details of the unique flagellar apparatus.  相似文献

Ceratium hirundinella has traditionally been characterised as a species that thrives in warm waters and in stratified conditions. In our study, however, we found that the temporal occurrence of C. hirundinella in Spanish reservoirs greatly differs from that typically described in temperate zone aquatic systems. We analysed the temporal occurrence of C. hirundinella populations as well as physical and chemical variables in one hundred Spanish reservoirs. C. hirundinella was present in most (74%) of the reservoirs. In 78% of the reservoirs with C. hirundinella occurrence, the species was present during winter time and in 70% it was present during all four seasons.C. hirundinella was very commonly present in Spanish reservoirs in winter time despite the mixing conditions and lower temperatures and light availability. The presence of the species was positively related to water ionic content (HCO3 , SO4 2-, Ca2+, Mg2+). We conclude that C. hirundinella temporal occurrence in southern north-temperate systems greatly differs from the seasonality typically described for the temperate zone and could be regulated by different factors than those operating in the northern north-temperate zone.  相似文献

An important environmental factor determining both phytoplankton and zooplankton community composition is lake depth and thermal stratification. However, there is little information on how the interaction between zooplankton grazers and their phytoplankton food changes along an environmental gradient of lake depth. We contrasted resource availability for daphniid zooplankton populations living in two shallow, unstratified lakes and in two deep, stratified lakes using a novel growth bioassay. Stratified lakes had consistently lower resource richness than shallow unstratified lakes. To test whether resources were important in explaining differences in daphniid composition of shallow and deep lakes, we performed reciprocal transplant experiments. We raised daphniids typical of shallow (Ceriodaphnia reticulata) and deep (Daphnia dentifera) lakes in the resources from replicate shallow and deep lakes and monitored survival and reproduction. The two species exhibited a performance trade-off, measured by life table r and R 0, across a gradient in natural resource richness. D. dentifera had higher relative fitness than C. reticulata when raised in the poorest resource environment from a deep lake. However, under richer resource conditions typical of shallow lakes, C. reticulata outperformed D. dentifera. We further created a gradient in natural resource quantity (by dilution) to test whether this trade-off in species relative fitness involved aspects of resource quality. No trade-off in species performance was evident across the dilution gradient, indicating that resource quality was important to the trade-off. We conclude that shifts in daphniid species composition along a gradient of lake depth involve an adaptive trade-off in ability to exploit rich versus poor resource quality. The factors influencing the abundance of phytoplankton in the Yellowknife River, in the Canadian subarctic, were determined from collections made for 42 consecutive months from June 1975 to November 1978. The spring bloom of plankton occured during April of each year in response to changing light conditions. WhileChlamydomonas lapponica was dominant during this period, it was replaced during the early part of the summer by a rapid succession ofDinobryon species in whichD. cylindricum was followed byD. sociale and in turn byD. bavaricum andD. divergens. Although low nutrient levels permitted the development ofDinobryon during the summer, the abundance of diatoms was greatly limited by the concentrations of SiO2 (< 0.1 g/m3). Algal densities began to decline in August and reached low overwintering levels by November. The absence of a fall bloom in densities was due to a combination of low temperatures and nutrient levels.P.O. Box 2310, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, X1A 2P7, Canada  相似文献

The flowers ofPavonia cancellata, a creeping ruderal half-shrub of northeastern Brazil, open synchronously at 6:00 h with all anthers already dehisced. The oligolectic beePtilothrix plumata was the most effective pollinator. During 90—180 min, female bees make up to 40 brief pollen collection trips to provision their brood cells. The pollen of about 40 flowers ofP. cancellata is needed to feed one bee larva. The most frequent flower visitors, however, are the specialized curculionid beetlesPristimerus calcaratus, which do not crosspollinate the flowers. They perforate the epidermis with their mouthparts, provoking dehydration, and then actively close the loose petals with their legs. Two hours after opening, half of the flowers had already been closed by the beetles. We interpret the fast, uninterrupted pollen foraging ofPtilothrix plumata bees as a strategy adapted to synchronous pollen presentation ofPavonia and to competition withPristimerus calcaratus: the female bees have to provision their brood cells before the beetles succeed in closing the flowers.  相似文献

A Yugoslavian strain ofCotesia rubecula (Marshall) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was released in spring broccoli for control of the imported cabbageworm,Pieris rapae (L.), in Montgomery Co., Virginia, in 1987.C. rubecula reproduced and parasitized imported cabbageworm larvae in fall broccoli in 1987. It was found in moderate numbers in the summer and fall crops in 1988, and by fall had dispersed 0.8 km from the original release site. However, noC. rubecula were detected in our broccoli plots in Montgomery Country in 1989 or 1990. The hymenopteran hyperparasitesIsdromas lycaenae (Walker)(Ichneumonidae), Spilochalcis torvina (Cresson) (Chalcididae), andTetrastichus galactopus (Ratzeburg) (Eulophidae) were found attackingC. rubecula. Hyperparasites emerged from 31.8% and 41.1% of theC. rubecula cocoons in 1987 and 1988, respectively.T. galactopus was the most numerous hyperparasite in 1987, butS. torvina was dominant in 1988. Hyperparasite activity was low during early spring, but increased in July in both years. By August 1988, only hyperparasites emerged from theC. rubecula cocoons collected in the field. In spite ofC. rubecula's success in overwintering, hyperparasites, especiallyS. torvina, may be a limiting factor in the establishment ofC. rubecula in southwestern Virginia.   相似文献

Silver and bighead carp were stocked in a large pen to control the nuisance cyanobacterial blooms in Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu. Plankton abundance and water quality were investigated about once a week from 9 May to 7 July in 2005. Biomass of both total crustacean zooplankton and cladocerans was significantly suppressed by the predation of pen-cultured fishes. There was a significant negative correlation between the N:P weight ratio and phytoplankton biomass. The size-selective predation by the two carps had no effect on the biomass of green alga Ulothrix sp. It may be attributed to the low fish stocking density (less than 40 g m−3) before June. When Microcystis dominated in the water of fish pen, the pen-cultured carps effectively suppressed the biomass of Microcystis, as indicated by the significant decline of chlorophyll a in the >38 μm fractions of the fish pen. Based on the results of our experiment and previous other studies, we conclude that silver and bighead carp are two efficient biomanipulation tools to control cyanobacterial (Microcystis) blooms in the tropical/subtropical eutrophic waters. Moreover, we should maintain an enough stocking density for an effective control of phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

The effects of food density on competition between Bosmina longirostris and Bosmina fatalis from Lake Kasumigaura were examined in the laboratory. When the animals were reared with a high concentration of Chlorella, B. fatalis, which is slightly larger than B. longirostris in body length, had larger brood sizes and a higher rate of population growth than B. longirostris. When the species were reared together at high food density, B. fatalis overcame B. longirostris. But B. longirostris won the competition at low food density. The effects of Microcystis on the competition were also examined. When the two species of Bosmina were reared in a mixture of Chlorella and Microcystis, the populations of both species hardly increased, although individual B fatalis showed slightly better individual growth and reproduction than B. longirostris. Decomposed Microcystis, however, was utilized well by both species. In Lake Kasumigaura, the decomposition of abundant Microcystis seemed to raise the food level, favouring B. fatalis over B. longirostris.  相似文献

Analysis of the food composition, distribution, lengths and dry weights of larval bleak, Mirogrex terraesanctae (Steinitz, 1952) in Lake Kinneret, Israel was conducted. Indices of electivity of ingested prey organisms were also determined. Larvae were surveyed throughout the 1989–90 reproductive seasons (Dec–Mar). Small larvae (<10.28 mm SL) preferentially select prey items smaller than 180 µ. Dominant zooplankters in the larval guts included: Bosmina longirostris, Ceriodaphnia reticulata and C. rigaudi, Asplanchna priodonita, Synchaeta oblonga, S. pectinata and juvenile cyclopoid copepods. Diaphanosoma brachiurum was rarely found (instars only) and no adult copepods were observed in larval guts. Some larvae specimens were found with up to 500 undigested (intact) accidentally ingested cells of Peridinium spp. per gut.  相似文献

On a moderately protected intertidal sand flat in west Kyushu, Japan, most of the population of the cirolanid isopodEurydice nipponica Bruce & Jones (89%–100%) was found in the zones occupied by the thalassinidean ghost shrimpCallianassa japonica Ortmann in July, August and December 1980.C. japonica later extensively expanded its habitat, and in July 1984, when almost the whole sand flat had been densely populated byC. japonica, the range of the distribution ofE. nipponica was the same as that ofC. japonica with a density about 10 times greater than in July 1980. The occurrence ofE. nipponica has previously been recorded from several exposed sandy beaches as well as their adjacent subtidal areas of well oxygenated sands along the coast of Kyushu, but not on more protected shores like the present sand flat. It is suggested thatC. japonica, through its bioturbating activities, produces sediment characteristics approximating those of the exposed sandy beaches which are the preferred habitat ofE. nipponica. It is supposed thatE. nipponica is a facultative commensal ofC. japonica. In a field experiment to excludeC. japonica and to detect its positive influence onE. nipponica, the densities ofE. nipponica were found to be lower in the experimental plots than in the intact plots. Statistically, however, the difference was only weakly significant, and the possible reasons for this are discussed.  相似文献
