By “neural net” will be meant “neural net without circles.” Every neural net effects a transformation from inputs (i.e., firing patterns of the input neurons) to outputs (firing patterns of the output neurons). Two neural nets will be calledequivalent if they effect the same transformation from inputs to outputs. A canonical form is found for neural nets with respect to equivalence; i.e., a class of neural nets is defined, no two of which are equivalent, and which contains a neural net equivalent to any given neural net. A new species of notothenioid fish, Pogonophryne bellingshausenensis n. sp., is described from the Bellingshausen Sea, Antarctica. The new species belongs to the dorsally-spotted “mentella” group of the genus and is characterized by having a short (about 13% SL) mental barbel with a short (about 16% of barbel length), narrow (barely wider than the stalk), and relatively inconspicuous terminal expansion composed of short, irregular, fingerlike processes. Compared to most other dorsally-spotted species of Pogonophryne (“barsukovi”, “marmorata”, and “mentella” groups), P. bellingshausenensis has a relatively wide (about 7% SL) interorbital region. An unspotted patch on the median dorsal surface of the head, posterior to the posttemporal ridges and anterior to the first dorsal fin, has not been observed previously in any dorsally-spotted species. The holotype was collected at 1,947 m, one of the deepest records for any species of Pogonophryne. A revised key to the ten species of the “mentella” group of Pogonophryne is also provided.  相似文献

Mammalian cells contain a pool of iron that is not strongly bound to proteins, which can be detected with fluorescent chelating probes. The cellular ligands of this biologically important “chelatable”, “labile” or “transit” iron are not known. Proposed ligands are problematic, because they are saturated by magnesium under cellular conditions and/or because they are not “safe”, i.e. they allow iron to catalyse hydroxyl radical formation. Among small cellular molecules, certain inositol phosphates (InsPs) excel at complexing Fe3+ in such a “safe” manner in vitro. However, we previously calculated that the most abundant InsP, inositol hexakisphosphate, cannot interact with Fe3+ in the presence of cellular concentrations of Mg2+. In this work, we study the metal complexation behaviour of inositol 1,2,3-trisphosphate [Ins(1,2,3)P 3], a cellular constituent of unknown function and the simplest InsP to display high-affinity, “safe”, iron complexation. We report thermodynamic constants for the interaction of Ins(1,2,3)P 3 with Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Fe2+ and Fe3+. Our calculations indicate that Ins(1,2,3)P 3 can be expected to complex all available Fe3+ in a quantitative, 1:1 reaction, both in cytosol/nucleus and in acidic compartments, in which an important labile iron subpool is thought to exist. In addition, we calculate that the fluorescent iron probe calcein would strip Fe3+ from Ins(1,2,3)P 3 under cellular conditions, and hence labile iron detected using this probe may include iron bound to Ins(1,2,3)P 3. Therefore Ins(1,2,3)P 3 is the first viable proposal for a transit iron ligand. The responses of photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, content of pigments, main osmolytes, and malondialdehyde (MDA) to water-withholding for 15 days and re-hydration in seedlings of two mango cultivars (Mangifera indica L. var. “Choke Anand’ and var. “Khieo Sawoei”) under 50% sunlight and full sunlight were investigated. For both cultivars, the water-witholding resulted in progressively decreases in leaf relative water content, net photosynthesis (P n), stomatal conductance (g s), and increases in the conversion of xanthophyll cycle pigments estimated by an index of leaf spectral reflectance (ΔPRI), carotenoid to chlorophyll ratio, non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and compatible solutes (total soluble sugar and proline). The effect of the water stress was more pronounced in full sunlight than 50% sunlight. The maximum photochemistry efficiency measured at dawn was fairly constant during the period of the treatment for both cultivars under both light regimes. The water stress caused less pronounced inhibition of photosynthesis in “Choke Anand” than in “Khieo Sawoei” cultivar under both light regimes. After re-hydration, the recovery was relatively quicker in “Choke Anand” than in “Khieo Sawoei” cultivar. Both cultivars in both 50% and full sunlight showed complete recovery in photochemistry after 5 days of re-watering but photosynthesis did not show a complete recovery as indicated by gas exchange rates. As the results of lower NPQ, ΔPRI and osmotic adjustment in the cultivar “Khieo Sawoei” compared to the cultivar “Choke Anand”, the former cultivar was less tolerant to drought than the latter. Our study further showed that partial shading (e.g., 50% of sunlight) significantly alleviated the harmful effect of drought stress on mango cultivars but in fact stomata of seedlings grown in partial shade was more responsive to water deficit than in full light.  相似文献

The dikaryon #5026 (A2B2)+#5132 (A7B7) of the basidiomyceteCoprinus macrorhizus was treated with ultraviolet light (UV),N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NG), and 5-bromouracil (BU) in order to induced developmental variations in fruiting. Among a total of 11,383 isolates, 742 were homokaryons. Fruiting test was made with the remaining 10,641 dikaryotic isolates, of which 1,594 showed abnormality in basidiocarp development. Both UV and NG were very efficient in inducing such variations, but BU was not. The induced variations were classified into seven basic types as follows: 1) “knotless”, in which hyphal knots, the first sign of fruiting, do not differentiate; 2) “primordiumless,” in which hyphal knots are formed, but no further development occurs; 3) “maturationles”, in which primordia are formed, but the maturation of primordia into adult fruit bodies does not occur; 4) “elongationless”, in which the elongation of stipe is blocked, and a basidiocarp with a very short stipe is produced; 5) “expansionless,” in which pilei do not expand normally; 6) “sporeless,” in which the formation of basidiospores is blocked and albinic pilei bearing none or only a small amount of spores are produced; and 7) “autolysisless,” in which the autolysis of pilei does not appear to occur. It has been noticed that the four steps of maturation, i.e. stipe elongation, pileus expansion, spore formation, and perhaps pileus autolysis, can proceed independently. Compound types of variations such as “elongation-expansionless,” “elongation-sporeless,” “expansion-sporeless,” and “elongation-expansion-sporeless” were also induced. Citrus is an important fruit crop as regards accumulation of carotenoids. In plant carotenoid biosynthesis, phytoene synthase gene (Psy) plays a key role in catalyzing the head-to-head condensation of geranylgeranyl diphosphate molecules to produce colorless phytoene. In the present paper, we reported the phytoene contents determination and characterization of Psy during fruit ripening of “Washington” navel orange and its red-fleshed mutant “Cara Cara”. Results showed that phytoene was exclusively accumulated in peel and pulp of “Cara Cara”. Although phytoene was observed accumulating with fruit ripening of “Cara Cara”, the contents in pulp were 10 times higher than those in peel. The isolated two Psy cDNAs were both 1520 bp in full length, containing 436 deduced amino acid residues, with a different amino acid at 412th. Genomic hybridization results showed that one or two copies might be present in “Cara Cara” and “Washington” genomes. During “Cara Cara” and “Washington” fruit coloration, expression of Psy was observed to be up-regulated, as revealed by tissue specific profiles in the flavedo, albedo, segment membrane and juice sacs. However, Psy expression in albedo of “Cara Cara” was higher than that in “Washington”, as evidenced by phytoene accumulation in the peel.  相似文献

This study has two main objectives, the first being the determination of net phytoplankton primary production to explain the phytoplankton’s function in a wetland carbon cycle, while the second objective is to relate this function with the phytoplankton assemblage composition. The annual variation in the phytoplankton production was monitored monthly for more than a year (2007–2008) in the semiarid eutrophic, hydrologically-perturbed “Tablas de Daimiel” National Park wetland. The phytoplankton fraction considered in this study comprised all organisms between the size 3 and 100 μm. The total biomass of phytoplankton was obtained by counting algae and calculating their volume, while net primary production and respiration were quantified by in situ incubations with the Winkler method. The respiration ranged from undetectable to 0.07 mgO2 l−1 h−1; net photosynthesis reached 0.20 mgO2 l−1 h−1. Net primary production was maximum at the end of the warm period (October 2007), and other peaks occurred at the start of summer (July 2007) or spring (March 2008). When maximum production took place, phytoplankton was mainly composed of small fast-growing chlorophytes (Tetraselmis cf. fontiana or Chlamydomonas sp.), in addition to some of the large, S-strategist algae (Peridinium umbonatum, Microcystis flos-aquae, Euglena sp.). The phytoplankton metabolism in “Tablas de Daimiel” was autotrophic as a whole due to changing contributions of algal groups. Only chlorophyte biomass was statistically related to net primary production. The conclusion reached is that this shallow eutrophic semiarid wetland possessed an annual net autotrophic production of phytoplankton fraction resulting from the small, fast-growing algae enhanced by hydrological perturbations that interrupted the autogenic course of S strategists.  相似文献

Over two consecutive years in the North Bank Plain Zone of Assam, India, during the spring growing season (February–June) of- 2006 and 2007 we examined effects of morpho-physiological characteristics of rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants in relation to methane (CH4) emission from paddy fields. Traditional cultivar “Agni” and modern improved cultivar “Ranjit” were grown in light textured loamy soil under irrigation. A higher seasonal integrated methane flux (E sif) was recorded from “Agni” compared to “Ranjit”. Both cultivars exhibited an emission peak during active vegetative growth and a second peak at panicle initiation. Leaf and tiller number, leaf area, length, and volume of root were greater in “Agni”, but grain yield and yield-related parameters such as increased photosynthate partitioning to panicles at the expense of roots were greater in “Ranjit”. “Ranjit” also photosynthesed faster than “Agni” during panicle development but slower than “Agni” at tillering. In both the years, a higher soil organic carbon content was recorded in plots of “Agni”. Our results suggest that in “Agni” enhanced diversion of photosynthate to roots resulted in more substrate being available to methanogenic bacteria in the rhizosphere. Additionally, the more extensive vegetative growth of this cultivar may enhance methane transport from the soil to the above-ground atmosphere.  相似文献

Isolates from the marine actinobacterial genus Salinispora were cultured from marine sponges collected from along the length of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Queensland, Australia. Strains of two species of Salinispora, Salinispora arenicola and “Salinispora pacifica”, were isolated from GBR sponges Dercitus xanthus, Cinachyrella australiensis and Hyattella intestinalis. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of representative strains, selected via BOX-PCR screening, identified previously unreported phylotypes of the species “S. pacifica”. The classification of these microdiverse 16S rRNA groups was further confirmed by analysis of the ribonuclease P RNA (RNase P RNA) gene through both phylogenetic and secondary structure analysis. The use of RNase P RNA sequences combined with 16S rRNA sequences allowed distinction of six new intraspecies phylotypes of “S. pacifica” within the geographical area of the GBR alone. One of these new phylotypes possessed a localised regional distribution within the GBR.  相似文献

Two new phototrophic consortia, “Chlorochromatium lunatum” and “Pelochromatium selenoides”, were observed and collected in the hypolimnion of several dimictic lakes in Wisconsin and Michigan (USA). The two consortia had the same morphology but different pigment composition. The cells of the photosynthetic components of the consortia were half-moon-shaped. This morphology was used to differentiate them from the previously described motile phototrophic consortia “Chlorochromatium aggregatum” and “Pelochromatium roseum”. These phototrophic cells did not resemble any described unicellular green sulfur bacteria. The predominant pigments detected were bacteriochlorophyll d and chlorobactene for the green-colored “Clc. lunatum”, and bacteriochlorophyll e and isorenieratene for the brown-colored “Plc. selenoides”. Their pigment compositions and the presence of chlorosomes attached to the inner face of the cytoplasmic membrane in both kinds of photosynthetic cells confirmed this new half-moon-shaped morphotype as a green sulfur bacterium. Both consortia were found thriving in lakes with low concentrations of sulfide (< 60 μM), below the layers of “Clc. aggregatum” and “Plc. roseum”. The green consortia were observed in lakes where the oxic-anoxic interface was located at shallow depths (2–7 m), while the brown consortia were found at greater depths (8–16 m). As shown by A. Rapoport (1952), when a very brief stimulation or “instantaneous input” is applied to a random net, the subsequent events are determined by the parameters of the net as follows: If the axon densitya is sufficiently large and the fraction γ of the neurons initially stimulated exceeds a certain value γ1 (theover-all threshold of the net for instantaneous stimulation), excitation will spread through the net until a steady state is reached in which a fraction γ2 ⩾ γ1 of the neurons is firing (“ignition phenomenon”). If γ < γ1 the activity in the net dies out. However, if the axon density is too small, the activity will ultimately die out, no matter how large the fraction of initially stimulated neurons. Thus there exists a limiting valueA of the axon density below which the net cannot “ignite”. ThisA is a function ofh, theindividual threshold of the neurons constituting the net (we assume hereh≥2, since forh=1 the situation is essentially different). Geometrically γ1 and γ2 are determined as the two intersection points of a straight line with a sigmoid curve. Whena<A the two curves do not intersect and fora=A they are tangent. In this paper the “tangency case” is investigated and the general features of the functionA(h) are determined. It is shown thatA increases monotonically withh (as one would expect). For all values ofh>1 we haveA(h)>h, but the fractionA(h)/h and the derivativedA(h)/dh approach unity ash increases. The problem of finding the “weak connectivity” of a random net is reduced to one involving a Markov process. This provides a mathematically exact treatment of the problem which had previously been treated by an approximation, whose justification was not rigorous. The exact method allows in principle not only the calculation of the “weak connectivity”, but also of the “strong connectivity”, and, in general, the probability that from a randomly selected neuron in the net there exist paths to a specified number of neurons. A seaweed with the local name “endong” is a rare eucheumoid variety that has recently been farmed in Tawi-Tawi, southern Philippines. Local farmers describe it as “eel-like” because of its long, slender and smooth thalli. Being somewhat similar in appearance to the dominantly farmed seaweed “tambalang” (Kappaphycus alvarezii var. tambalangii), farmers mix their harvests of “endong” with those of “tambalang”. We analyzed the hydrocolloid extract from “endong” using spectroscopic and chemical techniques. The extract’s infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C) spectra, and sulfate and 3,6-anhydrogalactose contents revealed carrageenan of the iota-type, similar to extracts from another farmed species, Eucheuma denticulatum. This result implies that “endong” carrageenan exhibits physico-chemical properties different from those of kappa-carrageenan of “tambalang”. The findings of this study are of significance to the seaweed industry, as carrageenan quality problems could potentially arise from a mixed harvest. A method based on the Fourier analysis is proposed, which describes and analyzes the contour morphology of carpal bones by separating morphology into factors of shape and size. Here, “size” refers to the average diameter of the contour. The “shape” is expressed byshape factors which are derived from the Fourier series and the “shape” of a monkey is expressed by ashape index which is calculated fromshape factors. The age change in the morphology of the lunate and capitate ofMacaca fuscata fuscata was analyzed by this method. The development of “shape” approximately completes by 3 years of age, whereas increase in “size” begins its spurt at that age as do body weight and anterior trunk length. By applying this method to other macaque species, it was found thatM. mulatta, M. f. yakui andM. cyclopis exhibit similar patterns of growth and development of carpal bones to those ofM. f. fuscata. Patterns found inM. fascicularis differ in that its bones develop faster than in the other macaques with respect to the “shape,” but remain small with respect to the “size.”  相似文献

Four flattened Gracilaria species have been reported from Taiwan: G. spinulosa, G. vieillardii, G. textorii and G. punctata, identified based on branching pattern, the presence or absence of spines, and characters that often vary seasonally. Gracilaria spinulosa was originally described from the type locality, Tainan. Species with toothed margins are usually referred to G. “vieillardii”; those with smooth margins to G. “textorii”, and those with smooth margins and dark spots scattered over the blade to G. “punctata”. Molecular analyses show that specimens with marginal teeth cluster in three different groups: a G. “vieillardii” clade, a G. spinulosa clade, and a clade sister to G. spinulosa. An undescribed species comprises the third clade, which is distinguished by its relatively large gonimoblast cells and weakly developed tubular nutritive cells. The three clades can be separated by the character of the tubular nutritive cells, the size of gonimoblast cells and certain vegetative features. Plants with entire margins form a single clade characterized by cystocarps with basal tubular nutritive cells and their absence in the cystocarp cavity. They are nested in the Hydropuntia complex and are referred to as Gracilaria “punctata” here. The records of G. textorii and G. punctata from Taiwan require reinvestigation in comparison with the Japanese species.  相似文献

 Mating behavior of the Far Eastern catfish, Silurus asotus (Siluriformes: Siluridae), was observed in a ricefield system facing the shore of Lake Biwa in mid-May to early June in 1990–1997. A set behavioral sequence similar to those of two other silurid fishes, S. biwaensis and S. lithophilus, both endemic to the Lake Biwa system, was observed: “chasing,”“clinging,”“enfolding” while “squeezing” by the male, and “circling” by the spawning pair. This form of mating behavior is quite different from that of S. asotus reported from the Ooi River system in Kyoto Prefecture, which mainly spawns in running water in ditches. A quantum model for the general enzymic reaction,E+S ⇌ ES → P, is presented, starting with the assumptions that any chemical substanceS, which may be a substrate for a particularE (S)-enzyme is a microphysical system and any enzymeE-molecule, capable of interacting with anS-substrate is a “measuring system” which will “measure” one or more of theS-observables. According to the above assumptions a stochastic model of the reaction is constructed and a computer simulation of the steady state performed. The results thus obtained predicted fluctuations in the enzymic reaction rate, function of the substrate “perturbation”. On an experimental basis it is demonstrated that the irradiation of an enzymic substrate with low energies results in the inducement of a dose-dependent oscillatory behavior in the corresponding enzymic reaction rate. In the reaction type, the oscillations thus induced in theE-activity by the corresponding substrates are out-of-phase, realizing a biochemical discriminating net. Likewise, in an reaction type, the oscillations induced by the irradiatedS-substrate in the activities of the respective enzyme, realize a biochemical switching net.  相似文献

We discuss under the McCulloch and Pitts assumptions for neural nets a circuit consisting ofk cycles such that one cycle is activated by an outside stimulus and sends an impulse to a second cycle which in its turn sends an impulse to the next cycle, etc., up to thekth cycle, which sends an impulse to a response. We thus have a “series” ofk cycles “interacting”. We give several theorems regarding the response patterns of such circuits under the additional constraint that the stimulus acts but once, and at the time it acts the circuit is at rest.  相似文献

We made a quantitative analysis of the responses of urban and rural residents in Sweden to arguments supporting and opposing conservation of large carnivores. The most important arguments in favour of conservation were: “I want them [the large carnivores] to exist in Sweden, even if I will never see any of them”, “Sweden should share the responsibility of conserving the large carnivores” and “We owe it [conservation of large carnivores] to future generations”. We found only small differences between rural and urban residents. For arguments opposing conservation, the difference between rural and urban areas was slightly greater. The most important arguments opposing conservation of large carnivores were: “They may have serious negative impact on livestock farming”, “They may have serious negative impact on reindeer husbandry” and “May inflict suffering on injured livestock”. We conclude that there seems to be less support for direct use values such as hunting, ecotourism or just experiencing large carnivores, this may imply that the minimum viable population size can be used as a long-term management goal for large carnivore populations, possibly with an exception for bears. We also conclude that a separate conservation or management plan is needed for each species, since the conflicts with human interests vary greatly between the different carnivore species.  相似文献

A mathematical model for learning of a conditioned avoidance behavior is presented. An identification of the net excitation of a neural model (Rashevsky, N., 1960.Mathematical Biophysics. Vol. II. New York: Dover Publications, Inc.) with the instantaneous probability of response is introduced and its usefulness in discussing block-trial learning performances in the conditioned avoidance situation is outlined for normal and brain-operated animals, using experimental data collected by the author. Later, the model is applied to consecutive trial learning and connection is made with the approach of H. D. Landahl (1964. “An Avoidance Learning Situation. A Neural Net Model.”Bull. Math. Biophysics,26, 83–89; and 1965, “A Neural Net Model for Escape Learning.”Bull. Math. Biophysics,27, Special Edition, 317–328) wherein lie further data with which the model can be compared.  相似文献
