An exactly solvable one-dimensional model describing resonance tunneling (reflectionless transmission) of a transverse electromagnetic wave through wide layers of magnetoactive plasma is developed on the basis of the Helmholtz equation. The plasma layers include a set of spatially localized density structures the amplitudes and thicknesses of which are such that approximate methods are inapplicable for their analysis. The profiles of the plasma density structures strongly depend on the choice of the free parameters of the problem that determine the amplitudes of plasma density modulation, characteristic scale lengths of the density structures, their number, and the total thickness of the nonuniform plasma layer. The plasma layers can also include a set of random inhomogeneities. The propagation of electromagnetic waves through such complicated plasma inhomogeneities is analyzed numerically within the proposed exactly solvable model. According to calculations, there are a wide set of inhomogeneous structures for which an electromagnetic wave incident from vacuum can propagate through the plasma layer without reflection, i.e., the complete tunneling of thick plasma barriers takes place. The model also allows one to exactly solve a one-dimensional problem on the nonlinear transillumination of a nonuniform plasma layer in the presence of cubic nonlinearity. It is important that, due to nonlinearity, the thicknesses of the evanescent plasma regions can decrease substantially and, at a sufficiently strong nonlinearity, such regions will disappear completely. The problem of resonance tunneling of electromagnetic radiation through gradient wave barriers is of interest for various applications, such as efficient heating of dense plasma by electromagnetic radiation and transmission of electromagnetic signals from a source located in the near-Earth plasma or deep in the plasma of an astrophysical object through the surrounding evanescent regions.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate if persons with implantable medical devices are intrinsically protected by the current electromagnetic safety guidelines. For inter-laboratory comparisons, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has defined a generic implant as consisting of an insulated wire with noninsulated tips, simulating active implants composed of a metallic case, and insulated wires with electric contacts at the tip. In this study, we determined the amplitude of the uniform electric fields induced in body tissues that cause a local increase in the tissue temperature by 1 °C in the presence of this generic implant for a wide range of frequencies and wire lengths. The field amplitudes were compared to the basic restrictions of the current exposure guidelines for both occupational and uncontrolled exposure. Results showed that a 1 °C temperature increase in the tissues around the tips of the generic implant can be reached for field strengths much smaller than 1% of those in the basic restrictions. The simulated results were validated by experimental evaluations. The impact of perfusion was investigated and was found to lead to a reduction in the local temperature peak by only 1.6-3 times. Additional simulations inside an inhomogeneous anatomical model were performed to ascertain whether similar heating as in the generic model was observed. The significant temperature elevations due to the presence of a generic implant indicate that demonstrating compliance with the basic restrictions might not be sufficient for persons with implants. Special considerations may be required, especially in the case of novel, emerging technologies that feature strong near-fields at frequencies below 10 MHz (e.g., wireless power-transfer systems).  相似文献

Many biological systems can be expected to exhibit resonance behavior involving the mechanical vibration of system elements. The natural frequencies of such resonances will, generally, be in the microwave frequency range. Some of these systems will be coupled to the electromagnetic field by the charge distributions they carry, thus admitting the possibility that microwave exposures may generate physiological effects in man and other species. However, such microwave excitable resonances are expected to be strongly damped by interaction with their aqueous biological environment. Although those dissipation mechanisms have been studied, the limitations on energy transfers that follow from the limited coupling of these resonances to the electromagnetic field have not generally been considered. We show that this coupling must generally be very small and thus the absorbed energy is so strongly limited that such resonances cannot affect biology significantly even if the systems are much less strongly damped than expected from basic dissipation models.  相似文献

The function of a protein is intimately tied to its subcellular localization. Although localizations have been measured for many yeast proteins through systematic GFP fusions, similar studies in other branches of life are still forthcoming. In the interim, various machine-learning methods have been proposed to predict localization using physical characteristics of a protein, such as amino acid content, hydrophobicity, side-chain mass and domain composition. However, there has been comparatively little work on predicting localization using protein networks. Here, we predict protein localizations by integrating an extensive set of protein physical characteristics over a protein's extended protein-protein interaction neighborhood, using a classification framework called 'Divide and Conquer k-Nearest Neighbors' (DC-kNN). These predictions achieve significantly higher accuracy than two well-known methods for predicting protein localization in yeast. Using new GFP imaging experiments, we show that the network-based approach can extend and revise previous annotations made from high-throughput studies. Finally, we show that our approach remains highly predictive in higher eukaryotes such as fly and human, in which most localizations are unknown and the protein network coverage is less substantial.  相似文献

A theoretical study is made of the dispersion properties of electromagnetic surface waves with arbitrary azimuthal mode numbers and with a small axial wavenumber in cylindrical metal waveguides entirely filled with a radially inhomogeneous, cold, magnetized plasma. The frequency ranges in which the extraordinary polarized waves under analysis can exist are found, and the conditions for their resonant interaction with an ordinary bulk wave are determined. The eigenfrequency of these surface waves is investigated as a function of the plasma parameters, the axial wavenumber, and the azimuthal mode number. Simple analytic expressions are derived for the eigenfrequencies of the surface waves under study propagating in a homogeneous plasma waveguide.  相似文献

Ammonia and its derived products are vital to modern societies. Artificial nitrogen fixation to ammonia via the Haber–Bosch process has been employed industrially for over 100 years. However, the Haber–Bosch process is energy intensive and not sustainable in its current form as it uses hydrogen sourced from steam methane reforming to reduce N2. The roadmap to sustainable NH3 production demands the discovery of novel approaches for nitrogen fixation under near ambient conditions that preferably use water as the reducing agent. Over the last decade, great efforts have been made to develop catalysts capable of N2 fixation under mild reaction conditions, using strategies such as low temperature thermal catalysis, nonthermal plasma catalysis, enzymatic catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis to generate ammonia and other valuable nitrogen‐containing chemicals. In parallel with catalytic performance studies, researchers have also placed emphasis on the mechanistic understanding of natural and artificial nitrogen fixation catalysts. In this work, the various routes now being explored for nitrogen fixation are summarized. The different dinitrogen activation and hydrogenation pathways are described, whilst describing key advances made to date on the journey toward near ambient ammonia synthesis. Key obstacles that need to be overcome to attract industry interest are also discussed.  相似文献

Although significant advances have been made in dissecting the effector mechanisms in autoimmunity, the major stumbling block remains defining the etiological events that precede disease. Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) illustrates this paradigm because of its high degree of heritability, its female predominance, and its extraordinarily specific and defined immune response and target destruction. In PBC, the major autoantigens belong to E2 components of the 2-oxo-acid dehydrogenase family of mitochondrially located enzymes that share a lipoylated peptide sequence that is the immunodominant target. Our previous work has demonstrated that synthetic mimics of the lipoate molecule such as 6-bromohexoanate demonstrate a high degree of reactivity with PBC sera prompted us to immunize groups of guinea pigs with 6-bromohexanoate conjugated to BSA. In this study, we provide serologic and immunohistochemical evidence that such immunized guinea pigs not only develop antimitochondrial autoantibody responses similar to human PBC, but also develop autoimmune cholangitis after 18 mo. Xenobiotic-immunized guinea pigs are the first induced model of PBC and suggest an etiology that has implications for the causation of other human autoimmune diseases. The data also reflect the likelihood that, in PBC, the multilineage antimitochondrial response is a pathogenic mechanism and that loss of tolerance and subsequent development of biliary lesions depends on either modification of the host mitochondrial Ag or a similar breakdown due to molecular mimicry.  相似文献

The inhomogeneous Markov chain model is used to discriminate acceptor and donor sites in genomic DNA sequences. It outperforms statistical methods such as homogeneous Markov chain model, higher order Markov chain and interpolated Markov chain models, and machine-learning methods such as k-nearest neighbor and support vector machine as well. Besides its high accuracy, another advantage of inhomogeneous Markov chain model is its simplicity in computation. In the three states system (acceptor, donor, and neither), the inhomogeneous Markov chain model is combined with a three-layer feed forward neural network. Using this combined system 3175 primate splice-junction gene sequences have been tested, with a prediction accuracy of greater than 98%.  相似文献

Low-frequency electromagnetic waves propagating perpendicular to the gradients of the density and magnetic field in an inhomogeneous dusty plasma whose mass density is determined primarily by the dust component are analyzed. It is shown that, in analyzing the dispersion properties of inhomogeneous plasma, it is important to take into account the dynamic properties of ions in the vicinity of the dust-ion hybrid resonance. The conditions for the onset of instability of a magnetic drift wave are investigated for different relations between parameters of the inhomogeneity and the value of the Alfvén velocity. The differences from the previous results, as well as possible astrophysical applications, are discussed.  相似文献

Xanthine oxidase (EC 1.1.3.22) and xanthine dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1. 204) are both members of the molybdenum hydroxylase flavoprotein family and represent different forms of the same gene product. The two enzyme forms and their reactions are often referred to as xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) activity. Physiologically, XOR is known as the rate-limiting enzyme in purine catabolism but has also been shown to be able to metabolize a number of other physiological compounds. Recent studies have also demonstrated its ability to metabolize xenobiotics, including a number of anticancer compounds, to their active metabolites. During the past 10 years, evidence has mounted to support a role for XOR in the pathophysiology of inflammatory diseases and atherosclerosis as well as its previously determined role in ischemia-reperfusion injury. While significant progress has recently been made in our understanding of the physiological and biochemical nature of this enzyme system, considerable work still needs to be done. This paper will review some of the more recent work characterizing the interactions and the factors that influence the interactions of XOR with various physiological and xenobiotic compounds.  相似文献

Vanadium is distributed extensively in nature. It is a trace element and is present in almost all living organisms including man. Even though vanadium was originally recognized for its ability to inhibit membrane Na+-K+-ATPase, various laboratory studies now document that this element has the capacity to affect the activity of various intracellular enzyme systems and may modify their physiological functions. Vanadium may be an essential element for normal development and may play an important role in various homeostatic mechanisms, and thus vanadium deficiency may prove to be an important concern. Abnormalities in biological disposition of vanadium may be involved in the pathogenesis of certain neurological disorders or cardiovascular diseases. While the essentiality of this element for living organisms is yet to be established with certainty, vanadium has become an increasingly important element and is used extensively in various heavy industries such as steel, oil, etc.; thus, the incidence of exposure to toxic levels of vanadium to industrial workers has been an increasing concern for toxicologists. To date, little information is available on the physiological or pharmacological actions of vanadium; hence, it is difficult to reach any definitive conclusion concerning its biological significance, essentiality and its role in pathological states. An attempt has been made in this review to broadly document what is known of various biological actions of vanadium.  相似文献

An exactly solvable model is used as a basis to study the reflectionless passage of a transverse electromagnetic wave through an inhomogeneous plasma containing large-amplitude, small-scale (subwave-length) structures (in particular, opaque regions) that cannot be correctly described by approximate methods. It is shown that, during the reflectionless passage of an electromagnetic wave, strong wave field splashes can occur in certain plasma sublayers. The nonuniform spatial plasma density profile is characterized by a number of free parameters describing the modulation depth of the dielectric function, the characteristic sizes of the structures and their number, the thickness of the inhomogeneous plasma region, and so on. Such plasma density structures are shown to be very diverse when, e.g., a wave that is incident from vacuum propagates without reflection through a plasma layer (wave barrier transillumination). With the cubic nonlinearity taken into account, a one-dimensional problem of the nonlinear transillumination of an inhomogeneous plasma can be solved exactly.  相似文献

A possible mechanism for microwave-neuron interaction, when the nerve is irradiated by a thermally insignificant electromagnetic field, is described. The radiation field is treated classically, but the atomic system which interacts with this field is treated quantum mechanically using the density matrix approach. Attention is given to both homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening effects, and the degrading influence of inhomogeneous broadening upon the neural membrane's ability to interact with the electromagnetic field is shown.  相似文献

Summary The potential of electromagnetic radiation and ultrasound for generating hyperthermia in tissues is discussed. Electrical properties, propagation parameters for electromagnetic and ultrasonic radiation and reflection problems yield limitations on most suitable frequency choices. Considerable insight has been gained in electromagnetic induced heat deposition patterns for the case of whole body irradiation and for local irradiations which can cause hot spot type of heating patterns. Pertinent results are compared and indicate that frequencies near 1000 MHz may be optimal for the electromagnetic case. But RF-frequencies using frequencies sufficiently low to reduce the magnetically induced term provide probably greater reproducibility. Finally recent work on mm-wave therapy and diagnosis is indicated. Emphasis is on the comparative merits of the various possible approaches.  相似文献

Existence of low level electromagnetic fields in the environment has been known since antiquity and their biological implications are noted for several decades. As such dosimetry of such field parameters and their emissions from various sources of mass utilization has been a subject of constant concern. Recent advancement in mobile communications has also drawn attention to their biological effects. Hand held children and adults alike generally use mobile sources as cordless phones in various positions with respect to the body. Further, an increasing number of mobile communication base stations have led to wide ranging concern about possible health effects of radiofrequency emissions. There are two distinct possibilities by which health could be affected as a result of radio frequency field exposure. These are thermal effects caused by holding mobile phones close to the body and extended conversations over a long period of time. Secondly, there could be possibly non thermal effects from both phones and base stations whereby the affects could also be cumulative. Some people may be adversely affected by the environmental impact of mobile phone base stations situated near their homes, schools or any other place. In addition to mobile phones, appliances like microwave oven etc are also in increasing use. Apart from the controversy over the possible health effects due to the non-thermal effect of electromagnetic fields the electromagnetic interaction of portable radio waves with human head needs to be quantitatively evaluated. Relating to this is the criteria of safe exposure to the population at large. While a lot of efforts have gone into resolving the issue, a clear picture has yet to emerge. Recent advances and the problems relating to the safety criteria are discussed.  相似文献

The 19th-century American physician Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) is known, internationally, more for his literary output than for his contributions to medical science. Yet a single paper he wrote in 1843--"The Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever"--has made him a hero in the eyes of many (especially in the United States) of the struggle against that scourge. Why that one article, written when Holmes was still in his thirties, should--even in its expanded 1855 version--so routinely be referred to as a "classic of medical literature", and why its author should have been raised on such a high pedestal that some grant him a position beside Ignác Semmelweis, are complicated questions. This present paper is an attempt to begin assessing what it is that makes someone a medical hero by looking at three different aspects of Holmes's early career. He was even as a young man a poet and a physiologist/anatomist as well as the author of this important essay. Whether and how those three features of Holmes's many-sides public persona are connected is discussed as a prelude to considering whether his work on puerperal fever legitimates his status as a medical hero.  相似文献

The growth of the laboratory work in a general and teaching hospital was studied from annual statistical returns, which gave a broad general picture for the period 1922 through 1953, and permitted a more detailed analysis for 1954 through 1964. An attempt was made to analyze the growth of work in the various laboratory departments, and to explain the changes found as far as possible. It appears that knowledge of previous changes might be used as a predictive tool for estimating future work loads. A plea is made for utilization of such studies in the design, equipment, staffing and financing of laboratory work, with the recognition that growth in this department has been and is likely to continue to be disproportionately greater than in hospital work as a whole.  相似文献

Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are the most common neurodegenerative diseases. They are characterized by the degeneration of selected populations of nerve cells that develop filamentous inclusions before degeneration. The neuronal inclusions of Alzheimer's disease are made of the microtubule-associated protein tau, in a hyperphosphorylated state. Recent work has shown that the filamentous inclusions of Parkinson's disease are made of the protein alpha-synuclein and that rare, familial forms of Parkinson's disease are caused by missense mutations in the alpha-synuclein gene. Besides Parkinson's disease, the filamentous inclusions of two additional neurodegenerative diseases, namely dementia with Lewy bodies and multiple system atrophy, have also been found to be made of alpha-synuclein. Abundant filamentous tau inclusions are not limited to Alzheimer's disease. They are the defining neuropathological characteristic of frontotemporal dementias such as Pick's disease, and of progressive supranuclear palsy and corticobasal degeneration. The recent discovery of mutations in the tau gene in familial forms of frontotemporal dementia has provided a direct link between tau dysfunction and dementing disease. The new work has established that tauopathies and alpha-synucleinopathies account for most late-onset neurodegenerative diseases in man. The formation of intracellular filamentous inclusions might be the gain of toxic function that leads to the demise of affected brain cells.  相似文献

The debate as to whether low-level electromagnetic fields can affect biological systems and in the long term cause health effects has been going on for a long time. Yet the interaction of weak electromagnetic fields (EMF) with living cells, undoubtedly a most important phenomenon, is still not well understood. The exact mechanisms by which the effects are produced have not been identified. Furthermore, it is not possible to clearly define which aspects of an EMF exposure that constitute the “dose.” One of the groups that contributed to solving this problem is the Bioelectromagnetics group at Catholic University of America (CUA), Washington, D.C. Their work has been devoted to investigating the physical parameters that are needed to obtain an effect of EMF exposure on biological systems, and also how to inhibit the effect. This is a review of their work on bioeffects caused by low-level EMF, their dependence on coherence time, constancy, spatial averaging, and also how the effects can be modified by an applied ELF noise magnetic field. The group has been using early chick embryos, and L929 and Daudi cells as their main experimental systems. The review also covers the work of other groups on low-level effects and the inhibition of the effects with an applied noise field. The group at CUA has shown that biological effects can be found after exposure to low-level ELF and RF electromagnetic fields, and when effects are observed, applying an ELF magnetic noise field inhibits the effects. Also, other research groups have tried to replicate the studies from the CUA group, or to apply EMF noise to suppress EMF-induced effects. Replications of the CUA effects have not always been successful. However, in all cases where the noise field has been applied to prevent an observed effect, it has been successful in eliminating the effect.  相似文献
