Estimating the degree of sexual dimorphism is difficult in fossil species because most specimens lack indicators of sex. We present a procedure that estimates sexual dimorphism in samples of unknown sex using method-of-moments. We assume that the distribution of a metric trait is composed of two underlying normal distributions, one for males and one for females. We use three moments around the mean of the combined-sex distribution to estimate the means and the common standard deviation of the two underlying distributions. This procedure has advantages over previous methods: it is relatively simple to use, specimens need not be assigned to sex a priori, no reference to living species analogs is required, and the method provides conservative estimates of dimorphism under a variety of conditions. The method performs best when the male and female distributions overlap minimally but also works well when overlap is substantial. Simulations indicate that this relatively simple method is more accurate and reliable than previous methods for estimating dimorphism. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Evolutionary biology has yet to reconcile the ubiquity of sex with its costs relative to asexual reproduction. Here, we test the hypothesis that coevolving parasites maintain sex in their hosts. Specifically, we examined the distributions of sexual reproduction and susceptibility to local parasites within a single population of freshwater snails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum). Susceptibility to local trematode parasites (Microphallus sp.) is a relative measure of the strength of coevolutionary selection in this system. Thus, if coevolving parasites maintain sex, sexual snails should be common where susceptibility is high. We tested this prediction in a mixed population of sexual and asexual snails by measuring the susceptibility of snails from multiple sites in a lake. Consistent with the prediction, the frequency of sexual snails was tightly and positively correlated with susceptibility to local parasites. Strikingly, in just two years, asexual females increased in frequency at sites where susceptibility declined. We also found that the frequency of sexual females covaries more strongly with susceptibility than with the prevalence of Microphallus infection in the field. In linking susceptibility to the frequency of sexual hosts, our results directly implicate spatial variation in coevolutionary selection in driving the geographic mosaic of sex.  相似文献

Pubic bone morphology was examined to test the accuracy of Phenice's visual method for determining sex from the os pubis. Twelve participants scored 50 pubic bones from individuals of known sex aged 52-92 years. The sample is of modern males and females, all presumed whites. An accuracy of approximately 83% in determining sex was recorded, compared to 95% reported by Phenice. This accuracy difference may reflect different age distributions of the two samples. Through replication of test results on two series of 25 specimens, the technique was found to be reliable. Previous experiences in human osteological analysis was shown to have no effect on accuracy in this test, confirming Phenice's assertion that the technique does not require extensive experience to yield accurate results. Results suggest that there is a moderate negative correlation between accuracy in determining the sex of an individual and that individual's age.  相似文献

This study examines statistical correlations between socioecological variables (including measures of group composition, intermale competition, and habitat preference) and the ontogeny of body size sexual dimorphism in anthropoid primates. A regression-based multivariate measure of dimorphism in body weight ontogeny is derived from a sample of 37 species. Quantitative estimates of covariation between socioecological variables and this multivariate measure are evaluated. Statistically significant covariation between the ontogeny of dimorphism and socioecological variables, with the possible exception of habitat preference, is observed. Sex differences in ontogeny are lacking in species that exhibit low levels of intermale competition and are classifiable as species with monogamous/polyandrous mating systems. Among dimorphic species, two modes of dimorphic growth are apparent, which seem to be related to different kinds of group compositions. Multimale/multifemale species tend to become dimorphic through bimaturism (sex differences in duration of growth) with minimal sex differences in growth rate. Single-male/multifemale species tend to attain dimorphism through differences in rate of growth, often with limited bimaturism. Measures of intermale competition may also covary with these modes of dimorphic growth, but the relations among these variables are sometimes ambiguous. Correlations between dimorphic growth and behavioral variables may reflect alternative life history strategies in primates. Specifically, the ways in which risks faced by subadult males are distributed and the relations of these risks to growth rates seem to influence the evolution of size ontogenies. The absence of dimorphic ontogeny in some species can be tied to similar distributions of risk in each sex. In taxa that become dimorphic primarily through rate differences in growth, the lifetime distribution of risks for males may change rapidly. In contrast, males may face a pattern of uniformly changing or stable risk in species that become dimorphic through bimaturism. Finally, much variation recorded by this study remains unexplained, providing additional evidence of the need to specially examine female ontogeny before primate body size dimorphism can be satisfactorily explained. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Variations of sex inconstancy were examined for vegetative and seed samples from eight natural populations of buffalograss located along two east-west transects crossing the shortgrass prairies of Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. Each of the eight populations was found to contain inconstant (monoecious) sex forms. Sex form distributions ranged from the Guymon vegetative sample, having no inconstant sex forms, to the Chillicothe seed sample in which the frequency of inconstant sex forms was nearly 70%. Frequencies of inconstant sex forms were generally higher for seed samples than for vegetative samples. Male to female sex ratio of constant (dioecious) sex forms generally did not differ from 1:1 expectations. Inconstant sex forms were more common among peripheral populations where buffalograss vegetation coverage was sparse than for more central populations having a higher concentration of buffalograss vegetation. Quantitative measures of sex inconstancy from artificial crosses were significantly (P < 0.001) correlated with the additive linear model of general combining ability, suggesting that sex determination in buffalograss has high heritability. The possible selection forces affecting the frequency of monoecious sex forms among natural populations are discussed.  相似文献

Both otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and the relative length of the index and ring fingers (the 2D:4D ratio) exhibit large sex differences, and both exhibit masculinization effects in female homosexuals and bisexuals. Because these sex differences exist in young children, the implication is that both types of measure are affected by prenatal androgen exposure, but it has been unknown to what degree these two types of measure are related. Accordingly, OAEs and the relative lengths of the fingers and the toes were measured in 59 heterosexual females, 55 heterosexual males, 29 homosexual females, and 33 homosexual males. The correlations between the two types of measure were unexpectedly quite low in both the heterosexual and nonheterosexual groups. For example, the correlation between number of spontaneous OAEs per ear and 2D:4D was less than 0.25, for both sexes and both sexual orientations. One interpretation of these results is that the prenatal hormonal mechanisms producing the sex differences in OAEs differ in quality, degree, or timing from those producing the sex differences in relative finger length. That is, OAEs and 2D:4D may be windows onto slightly different prenatal processes or times during prenatal development. Measures of mental-rotation ability also were obtained on these participants, and those correlations with relative finger length also were small.  相似文献

Measures of sexual dimorphism have been used extensively to predict the social organization and ecology of animal and human populations. There is, however, no universally accepted measure of phenotypic differences between the sexes. Most indices of sexual dimorphism fail to incorporate all of the information contained in a random data set. In an attempt to have a better alternative, an index is proposed to measure sexual dimorphism in populations that are distributed according to a probabilistic mixture model with two normal components. The index calculates the overlap between two functions that represent the contribution of each sex in the mixture. In order to assess such an index, sample means, variances and sizes of each sex are needed. As a consequence, the sample information used is greater than that used by other indices that take intrasexual variability into account. By evaluating some examples, our proposed index appears to be a more realistic measure of sexual dimorphism than other measures currently used.  相似文献

In dioecious plants, differences in growth traits between sexes in a response to micro-environmental heterogeneity may affect sex ratio bias and spatial distributions. Here, we examined sex ratios, stem growth traits and spatial distribution patterns in the dioecious clonal shrub Aucuba japonica var. borealis, in stands with varying light intensities. We found that male stems were significantly more decumbent (lower height/length ratio) but female stems were upright (higher height/length ratio). Moreover, we found sex-different response in stem density (no. of stems per unit area) along a light intensity gradient; in males the stem density increased with increases in canopy openness, but not in females. The higher sensitivity of males in increasing stem density to light intensity correlated with male-biased sex ratio; fine-scale sex ratio was strongly male-biased as canopy openness increased. There were also differences between sexes in spatial distributions of stems. Spatial segregation of sexes and male patches occupying larger areas than female patches might result from vigorous growth of males under well-lit environments. In summary, females and males showed different growth responses to environmental variation, and this seemed to be one of possible causes for the sex-differential spatial distributions and locally biased sex ratios.  相似文献

This report outlines a comparison of renal weight and volume and selected skeletal parameters to sex in 22 adult male and 156 adult female rhesus macaques. Means and standard deviations for kidney weight and volume, body weight, and radiographic measurements for both males and females are reported. Ninety-five percent confidence intervals and P-values for the mean differences between the sexes for these parameters were also compiled. Male monkeys were larger, but had kidneys of similar size to those of the females. Joint distributions of the radiographic measurements of the first lumbar vertebra and the skull showed that males were larger in both measurements. The distributions of these parameters were clearly separate in males and females, while joint distributions of kidney weight and volume for males and females overlapped almost completely. We found that, regardless of age, sex, weight, or skeletal size, all normal adult rhesus monkeys generally have similar-sized kidneys.  相似文献

The palmar dermatoglyphics of four groups of macaque, Macaca nemestrina, M. fuscata yakui, M. f. fuscata and M. fascicularis, were compared, and the genetic affinities of the four groups were assessed using a dermatoglyphic mean square distance measure. According to this measure the two subspecies of M. fuscata were dermatoglyphically more distant from one another than was M. fuscata fuscata from M. nemestrina, suggesting that the two insular populations of M. fuscata had evolved in genetic isolation. The distributions of specific dermatoglyphic patterns were then compared with the frequency distributions of alleles at different protein structural loci in other macaque populations. The results of the comparison were consistent in that insular populations showed reduction in variability for both kinds of systems. The implications of this correlation are discussed in terms of population size and natural selection.  相似文献

(1) Analysis of data from samples of chub taken at monthly intervals from two tributaries of the Herefordshire Wye revealed an annual cycle of scale growth with the formation ofa check during May or June. The frequency distributions of ages deter-mined from scale checks and the length-frequency distributions showed close simi-larities. It was concluded that age determinations based on an examination of the scales were valid, provided care was taken in the identification ofthe first scale cheek. The maximum age observed was 15 years. (2) Examination ofthe population structure revealed an overall sex ratio close to unity but there was a significant increase in the proportion of females in the 11 + and older age groups. Dominant year-classes were observed. The strongest was 1959, which was attributed to exceptionally warm, dry, sunny weather during the period May-September. (3) Female chub grew more rapidly and attained greater ultimate size than the males. Changes in the pattern of growth during the life-span were attributed to the attainment of sexual maturity, especially in the females. The length-weight relation-ships of the sexes diflFered slightly but were almost identical for the same sex in the two rivers studied. Seasonal variations in the growth-rate were followed. Most rapid growth occurred after check formation in May or June and continued until September.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: Analogous to biological sequence comparison, comparing cellular networks is an important problem that could provide insight into biological understanding and therapeutics. For technical reasons, comparing large networks is computationally infeasible, and thus heuristics, such as the degree distribution, clustering coefficient, diameter, and relative graphlet frequency distribution have been sought. It is easy to demonstrate that two networks are different by simply showing a short list of properties in which they differ. It is much harder to show that two networks are similar, as it requires demonstrating their similarity in all of their exponentially many properties. Clearly, it is computationally prohibitive to analyze all network properties, but the larger the number of constraints we impose in determining network similarity, the more likely it is that the networks will truly be similar. RESULTS: We introduce a new systematic measure of a network's local structure that imposes a large number of similarity constraints on networks being compared. In particular, we generalize the degree distribution, which measures the number of nodes 'touching' k edges, into distributions measuring the number of nodes 'touching' k graphlets, where graphlets are small connected non-isomorphic subgraphs of a large network. Our new measure of network local structure consists of 73 graphlet degree distributions of graphlets with 2-5 nodes, but it is easily extendible to a greater number of constraints (i.e. graphlets), if necessary, and the extensions are limited only by the available CPU. Furthermore, we show a way to combine the 73 graphlet degree distributions into a network 'agreement' measure which is a number between 0 and 1, where 1 means that networks have identical distributions and 0 means that they are far apart. Based on this new network agreement measure, we show that almost all of the 14 eukaryotic PPI networks, including human, resulting from various high-throughput experimental techniques, as well as from curated databases, are better modeled by geometric random graphs than by Erd?s-Rény, random scale-free, or Barabási-Albert scale-free networks. Two prevailing paradigms explain the diversity of sex-determining modes in reptiles. Many researchers, particularly those who study reptiles, consider genetic and environmental sex-determining mechanisms to be fundamentally different, and that one can be demonstrated experimentally to the exclusion of the other. Other researchers, principally those who take a broader taxonomic perspective, argue that no clear boundaries exist between them. Indeed, we argue that genetic and environmental sex determination in reptiles should be seen as a continuum of states represented by species whose sex is determined primarily by genotype, species where genetic and environmental mechanisms coexist and interact in lesser or greater measure to bring about sex phenotypes, and species where sex is determined primarily by environment. To do otherwise limits the scope of investigations into the transition between the two and reduces opportunities to use studies of reptiles to advance understanding of vertebrate sex determination generally.  相似文献

Only two species of tick (Ixodes hexagonus and Ixodes canisuga) were found to infest suburban foxes. The populations of these two ticks were examined, their distributions within the host population described, and infestation levels of I hexagonus discussed in relation to the sex, age and behaviour of the host. The most important factor regulating the level of tick infestation is probably the degree of den usage by the host. The tick infestations were found to have minimal effect on the host, and even an abnormally high level of infestation found on one fox was not considered to be lethal.  相似文献

Protein structures come in families. Are families “closely knit” or “loosely knit” entities? We describe a measure of relatedness among polymer conformations. Based on weighted distance maps, this measure differs from existing measures mainly in two respects: (1) it is computationally fast, and (2) it can compare any two proteins, regardless of their relative chain lengths or degree of similarity. It does not require finding relative alignments. The measure is used here to determine the dissimilarities between all 12, 403 possible pairs of 158 diverse protein structures from the Brookhaven Protein Data Bank (PDB). Combined with minimal spanning trees and hierarchical clustering methods, this measure is used to define structural families. It is also useful for rapidly searching a dataset of protein structures for specific substructural motifs. By using an analogy to distributions of Euclidean distances, we find that protein families are not tightly knit entities.  相似文献

Measuring similarities between objects based on their attributes has been an important problem in many disciplines. Object-attribute associations can be depicted as links on a bipartite graph. A similarity measure can be thought as a unipartite projection of this bipartite graph. The most widely used bipartite projection techniques make assumptions that are not often fulfilled in real life systems, or have the focus on the bipartite connections more than on the unipartite connections. Here, we define a new similarity measure that utilizes a practical procedure to extract unipartite graphs without making a priori assumptions about underlying distributions. Our similarity measure captures the relatedness between two objects via the likelihood of a random walker passing through these nodes sequentially on the bipartite graph. An important aspect of the method is that it is robust to heterogeneous bipartite structures and it controls for the transitivity similarity, avoiding the creation of unrealistic homogeneous degree distributions in the resulting unipartite graphs. We test this method using real world examples and compare the obtained results with alternative similarity measures, by validating the actual and orthogonal relations between the entities.  相似文献

The timing and dynamics of many diverse behaviors of mammals, e.g., patterns of animal foraging or human communication in social networks exhibit complex self-similar properties reproducible over multiple time scales. In this paper, we analyze spontaneous locomotor activity of healthy individuals recorded in two different conditions: during a week of regular sleep and a week of chronic partial sleep deprivation. After separating activity from rest with a pre-defined activity threshold, we have detected distinct statistical features of duration times of these two states. The cumulative distributions of activity periods follow a stretched exponential shape, and remain similar for both control and sleep deprived individuals. In contrast, rest periods, which follow power-law statistics over two orders of magnitude, have significantly distinct distributions for these two groups and the difference emerges already after the first night of shortened sleep. We have found steeper distributions for sleep deprived individuals, which indicates fewer long rest periods and more turbulent behavior. This separation of power-law exponents is the main result of our investigations, and might constitute an objective measure demonstrating the severity of sleep deprivation and the effects of sleep disorders.  相似文献
