1. The occurrence and grazing activity of mixotrophic (phagotrophic) algae in three icecovered freshwater lakes of different trophic status were examined (oligotrophic Lake Giles, mesotrophic Lake Lacawac, eutrophic Lake Waynewood), Microbial population densities were low (4.1–7.2 × 105 bacteria ml?1 and 1.2–2.4 × 103 nanoplanktonic protists ml?1). All three nanoplankton communities were dominated by chloroplast-bearing forms (60–96%). 2. Mixotrophs formed up to 48% of the phototrophic nanoplankton in Lake Lacawac and were responsible for up to ~90% of the observed uptake of bacteria-sized particles. The abundance of mixotrophic algae in Lakes Giles and Waynewood were extremely low (3 and 2% of the phototrophic algae, respectively), and heterotrophs dominated nanoplankton bacterivory. 3. The overall impact of nanoplankton feeding activity on the bacterial assemblage was low under the ice in Lakes Giles and Waynewood. Removal rates of bacteria based on our particle uptake experiments were 1.0 and 4.0% of the bacterial standing stock day?1 in these lakes, respectively. Removal rates were higher in Lake Lacawac and ranged from 4.9 to 11% of the bacterial standing stock day?1 on 2 successive sampling days.  相似文献

The McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica harbor numerous permanently ice-covered lakes, which provide a year-round oasis for microbial life. Microbial eukaryotes in these lakes occupy a variety of trophic levels within the simple aquatic food web ranging from primary producers to tertiary predators. Here, we report the first molecular study to describe the vertical distribution of the eukaryotic community residing in the photic zone of the east lobe (ELB) and west lobe (WLB) of the chemically stratified Lake Bonney. The 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) libraries revealed vertically stratified populations dominated by photosynthetic protists, with a cryptophyte dominating shallow populations (ELB–6 m; WLB–10 m), a haptophyte occupying mid-depths (both lobes 13 m) and chlorophytes residing in the deepest layers (ELB–18 and 20 m; WLB–15 and 20 m) of the photic zone. A previously undetected stramenopile occurred throughout the water column of both lobes. Temporal variation in the eukaryotic populations was examined during the transition from Antarctic summer (24-h sunlight) to polar night (complete dark). Protist diversity was similar between the two lobes of Lake Bonney due to exchange between the photic zones of the two basins via a narrow bedrock sill. However, vertical and temporal variation in protist distribution occurred, indicating the influence of the unique water chemistry on the biology of the two dry valley watersheds.  相似文献

1. Mixotrophs are organisms which combine phototrophy and heterotrophy; such nutritional behaviour is widespread among protists. This ability to combine multiple modes of nutrition varies between species and is not related to their taxonomic grouping. A classification of mixotrophic protists, based on their behaviour, is proposed, dividing them into four groups.
2. Group A includes protists whose primary mode of nutrition is heterotrophy and where phototrophy is employed only when prey concentrations limit heterotrophic growth. In groups B, C and D phototrophy is the dominant mode of nutrition. In group B phagotrophy supplements growth when light is limiting, therefore ingestion of prey is inversely proportional to light intensity; in group C phagotrophy provides essential substances for growth and ingestion is proportional to light intensity; and group D includes those who have very low ingestion rates, ingesting prey only, for example, for cell maintenance during prolonged dark periods.
3. This classification is aimed towards predicting the impact of any particular mixotrophic protist on the aquatic food web, and how this impact may vary depending on the environmental conditions. A model representation of the four groups is discussed.  相似文献

The presence of crustaceans in some Antarctic lakes adds a level of complexity to the food webs of these environments. The grazing pressure of the crustaceans on phytoplankton and other protists, and the role they play in controlling food web structure, has not yet been examined in any detail. This paper presents the first data on grazing pressure of crustacean zooplankton in continental Antarctic lakes. In this study the grazing rates of Paralabidocera antarctica in saline Ace Lake, Vestfold Hills, were assessed using a radio-tracer method. Clearance rates ranged from approximately 1 to 8 ml ind.−1 day−1, depending on developmental stage. Due to their high abundance, nauplii exhibited the highest daily carbon ingestion rates. The population cleared about 3% of the water column per day, accounting for a significant fraction of primary production. P. antarctica has a considerable impact on the carbon cycle in Ace Lake and, by inference, in the other lakes in which it occurs. Accepted: 30 October 1999  相似文献

In perennially ice-covered lakes of Taylor Valley, Antarctica, “legacy”, a carryover of past ecosystem events, has primarily been discussed in terms of nutrient and salinity concentrations and its effect on the current ecology of the lakes. In this study, we determine how residual pools of ancient carbon affect the modern carbon abundance and character in the water columns of Lakes Fryxell, Hoare, and Bonney. We measure the stable carbon isotopic compositions and concentrations of particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the water column of these lakes over four seasons (1999–2002). These data are presented and compared with all the previously published Taylor Valley lacustrine carbon stable isotopic data. Our results show that the carbon concentrations and isotopic compositions of the upper water columns of those lakes are controlled by modern processes, while the lower water columns are controlled to varying degrees by inherited carbon pools. The water column of the west lobe of Lake Bonney is dominated by exceptionally high concentrations of DIC (55,000–75,000 μmol l−1) reflecting the long period of ice-cover on this lake. The east lobe of Lake Bonney has highly enriched δ13CDIC values resulting from paleo-brine evaporation effects in its bottom waters, while its high DIC concentrations provide geochemical evidence that its middle depth waters are derived from West Lake Bonney during a hydrologically connected past. Although ancient carbon is present in both Lake Hoare and Lake Fryxell, the δ13CDIC values in bottom waters suggest dominance by modern primary productivity-related processes. Anaerobic methanogenesis and methanotrophy are also taking place in the lower water column of Lake Fryxell with enough methane, oxidized anaerobically, to contribute to the DIC pool. We also show how stream proximity and high flood years are only a minor influence on the carbon isotopic values of both POC and DIC. The Taylor Valley lake system is remarkably stable in both inter-lake and intra-lake carbon dynamics. Handling editor: K. Martens  相似文献

Aim General patterns of biodiversity, such as latitudinal gradients and species‐area relationships, are found consistently in a wide range of organisms, but recent results for protist diversity suggest that organisms shorter than 2 mm do not display such patterns. We tested this prediction in bdelloid rotifers, pluricellular metazoans smaller than 2 mm, but with size and ecology comparable to protists. Location A single valley in northern Italy was surveyed in detail and compared to all available faunistic data on bdelloids worldwide. Methods We analysed 171 local assemblages of bdelloid rotifers living in 5 systems of dry mosses and submerged mosses in running water and in lakes. We compared patterns of alpha, beta, and gamma diversity, and nestedness of metacommunities, with those known from protists and larger organisms. Results Bdelloid rotifers showed low local species richness (alpha diversity), with strong habitat selection, as observed in larger organisms. The number of species differed among systems, with a higher number of species in dry than in aquatic mosses. There was no hierarchical structure or exclusion of species in the metacommunity pattern within each system. Local diversity for the entire valley was surprisingly high compared with worldwide bdelloid diversity, similar to observed patterns in protists. Main Conclusions Bdelloid rotifers have some of the peculiarities of protist biodiversity, although at slightly different spatial scales, thus confirming the idea of a major change in biodiversity patterns among organisms shorter than 2 mm. However, bdelloids show stronger habitat selection than protists. We suggest two possible explanations for the observed patterns: (1) dispersal is very rare, and not all bdelloid clones are arriving everywhere; and (2) dispersal is effective in displacing propagules, but environmental heterogeneity is very high and prevents many species from colonizing a given patch of moss.  相似文献

Mixotrophic protists combine phagotrophy and phototrophy within a single cell. Greater phagotrophic activity could reinforce the bypass of carbon (C) flux through the bacteria‐mixotroph link and thus lead to a more efficient transfer of C and other nutrients to the top of the trophic web. Determining how foreseeable changes in temperature and UVR affect mixotrophic trade‐offs in favor of one or the other nutritional strategy, along the mixotrophic gradient, is key to understanding the fate of carbon and mineral nutrients in the aquatic ecosystem. Our two main hypotheses were: (i) that increased warming and UVR will divert metabolism toward phagotrophy, and (ii) that the magnitude of this shift will vary according to the organism's position along the mixotrophic gradient. To test these hypotheses, we used two protists (Isochrysis galbana and Chromulina sp.) located in different positions on the mixotrophic gradient, subjecting them to the action of temperature and of UVR and their interaction. Our results showed that the joint action of these two factors increased the primary production:bacterivory ratio and stoichiometric values (N:P ratio) close to Redfield's ratio. Therefore, temperature and UVR shifted the metabolism of both organisms toward greater phototrophy regardless of the original position of the organism on the mixotrophic gradient. Weaker phagotrophic activity could cause a less efficient transfer of C to the top of trophic webs.  相似文献

Protozoan growth rates in Antarctic lakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The growth rates of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN), mixotrophic cryptophytes, dinoflagellates and ciliates in field assemblages from Ace Lake in the Vestfold Hills (eastern Antarctica) and Lakes Fryxell and Hoare (McMurdo Dry Valleys, western Antarctica), were determined during the austral summers of 1996/1997 and 1997/1998. The response of the nanoflagellates to temperature differed between lakes in eastern and western Antarctica. In Ace Lake the available bacterial food resources had little impact on growth rate, while temperature imposed an impact, whereas in Lake Hoare increased bacterial food resources elicited an increase in growth rate. However, the incorporation of published data from across Antarctica showed that temperature had the greater effect, but that growth is probably controlled by a suite of factors not solely related to bacterial food resources and temperature. Dinoflagellates had relatively high specific growth rates (0.0057–0.384 h−1), which were comparable to Antarctic lake ciliates and to dinoflagellates from warmer, lower latitude locations. Temperature did not appear to impose any significant impact on growth rates. Mixotrophic cryptophytes in Lake Hoare had lower specific growth rates than HNAN (0.0029–0.0059 h−1 and 0.0056–0.0127 h−1, respectively). They showed a marked seasonal variation in growth rate, which was probably related to photosynthetically active radiation under the ice at different depths in the water column. Ciliates' growth rates showed no relationship between food supply and mean cell volume, but did show a response to temperature. Specific growth rates ranged between 0.0033 and 0.150 h−1 for heterotrophic ciliates, 0.0143 h−1 for a mixotrophic Plagiocampa species and 0.0075 h−1 for the entirely autotrophic ciliate, Mesodinium rubrum. The data indicated that the scope for growth among planktonic Protozoa living in oligotrophic, cold extreme lake ecosystems is limited. These organisms are likely to suffer prolonged physiological stress, which may account for the highly variable growth rates seen within and between Antarctic lakes. 1. The influence of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment on phytoplankton photosynthesis was investigated in Lakes Bonney (east and west lobes), Hoare, Fryxell and Vanda, which lie in the ablation valleys adjacent to McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Bioassay experiments were conducted during the austral summer on phytoplankton populations just beneath the permanent ice cover in all lakes and on populations forming deep-chlorophyll maxima in the east and west lobes of Lake Bonney. 2. Phytoplankton photosynthesis in surface and mid-depth (13 m) samples from both lobes of Lake Bonney were stimulated significantly (P < 0.01) by phosphorus enrichment (2 μM) with further stimulation by simultaneous phosphorus plus NH4+ (20 μM) enrichment. Similar trends were observed in deeper waters (18 m) from the east lobe of Lake Bonney, although they were not statistically significant at P < 0.05. Photosynthesis in this lake was never enhanced by the addition of 20 μM NH4+ alone. Simultaneous addition of phosphorus plus nitrogen stimulated photosynthesis significantly (P < 0.01) in both Lake Hoare and Lake Fryxell. No nutrient response occurred in Lake Vanda, where activity in nutrient-enriched samples was below unamended controls; results from Lake Vanda are suspect owing to excessively long sample storage in the field resulting from logistic constraints. 3. Ambient dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) (NH4++ NO2?+ NO3?): soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) ratios partially support results from bioassay experiments indicating strong phosphorus deficiency in Lake Bonney and nitrogen deficiency in Lakes Hoare and Fryxell. DIN : SRP ratios also imply phosphorus deficiency in Lake Vanda, although not as strong as in Lake Bonney. Particulate carbon (PC): particulate nitrogen (PN) ratios all exceed published ratios for balanced phytoplankton growth, indicative of nitrogen deficiency. 4. Vertical nutrient profiles in concert with low advective flux, indicate that new (sensu Dugdale & Goering, 1967) phytoplankton production in these lakes is supported by upward diffusion of nutrients from deep nutrient pools. This contention was tested by computing upward DIN : SRP flux ratios across horizontal planes located immediately beneath each chlorophyll maximum and about 2 m beneath the ice (to examine flux to the phytoplankton immediately below the ice cover). These flux ratios further corroborated nutrient bioassay results and bulk DIN : SRP ratios indicating phosphorus deficiency in Lakes Bonney and Vanda and potential nitrogen deficiency in Lakes Hoare and Fryxell. 5. Neither biochemical reactions nor physical processes appear to be responsible for differences in nutrient deficiency among the study lakes. The differences may instead be related to conditions which existed before or during the evolution of the lakes.  相似文献

Inland aquatic ecosystems play a critical role in the global carbon cycle, processing a great fraction of the organic matter coming from terrestrial ecosystems, and the microbial food web is crucial in this process. Thus, we aimed to evaluate whether the food resource of planktonic protozoa comes mainly from small primary producers or heterotrophic bacteria in tropical shallows lakes, assuming the hypothesis that, in general, picocyanobacteria would be the main food resource for protists. We also expected that the autotrophic fraction would be mainly related to protists at the surface of the environments, while the heterotrophic fraction would be more important at the lower strata of the water column. We performed size-fractionation experiments to evaluate the effects of predation of protists on heterotrophic bacteria and picocyanobacteria. We also sampled planktonic organisms at the subsurface and bottom of 20 lakes in a Neotropical floodplain. We found an herbivory preference of heterotrophic flagellates, while ciliates seem to exert a stronger impact on heterotrophic bacteria. We also found no relationship between heterotrophic bacteria and protists in the field data, whereas positive relationships between picocyanobacteria and protists were observed in environments where there was sunlight. Thus, both heterotrophic bacteria and picocyanobacteria were important components in the food webs of tropical shallow lakes. Moreover, the trophic cascade caused by zooplankton predation suggests that protists are efficient in transferring the energy from the base of microbial food webs to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Antarctica is the continent with the harshest climate on the Earth. Antarctic lakes, however, usually presents liquid water, at least during part of the year or below the ice cover, especially those from the sub-Antarctic islands and the maritime Antarctic region where climatic conditions are less extreme. Planktonic communities in these lakes are mostly dominated by microorganisms, including bacteria and phototrophic and heterotrophic protists, and by metazooplankton, usually represented by rotifers and calanoid copepods, the latter mainly from the genus Boeckella. Here I report and discuss on studies performed during the last decade that show that there is a potential for top–down control of the structure of the planktonic microbial food web in sub-Antarctic and maritime Antarctic lakes. In some of the studied lakes, the effect of copepod grazing on protozoa, either ciliates or flagellates, depending on size of both the predator and the prey, could promote cascade effects that would be transmitted to the bacterioplankton assemblage.  相似文献

The perennially ice-covered lakes of Antarctica have hydrodynamically stable water columns with a number of vertically distinct phytoplankton populations. We examined the photosynthesis-irradiance characteristics of phytoplankton from four depths of Lake Bonney to determine their physiological condition relative to vertical gradients in irradiance and temperature. All populations studied showed evidence of extreme shade adaptation, including low Ik values (15–45 μE · m?2· s?1) and extremely low maximal photosynthetic rates (PBm less than 0.3 μg C ·μg chl a?1· h?1). Photosynthetic rates were controlled by temperature as well as light variations with depth. Lake Bonney has an inverted temperature profile within the trophogenic zone that increased from 0° C at the ice-water interface to 6° C from 10 to 18 m. Deeper phytoplankton (10 m and 17 m) were found to have photosynthetic capacities (PBm) and efficiences (α) three to five times higher than those at the ice-water interface. However, Q10 values were only ca. 2 for PBm (no temperature dependence was evident for α), suggesting that a simple temperature response cannot explain all the differences between populations. Lake Bonney phytoplankton (primarily cryptophytes and chlorophytes) had photosynthetic characteristics similar to diatoms from other physically stable environments (e.g. sea ice, benthos) and may be ecologically analogous to multiple deep chlorophyll maxima.  相似文献

Trophic patterns of omnivorous freshwater shrimps, Exopalaemon modestus and Macrobrachium nipponensis, were investigated in two shallow eutrophic lakes by using stable isotope analysis. δ15N and δ13C of M. nipponensis and E. modestus increased with increasing body weight, which might be attributed to larger individuals ingesting organisms that feed higher up the food chain and/or increased assimilation of benthic food items with enriched isotopic signatures. Of the freshwater shrimps occurring in the studied lakes, those from Lake Taihu had significantly elevated δ15N and δ13C values (4.3‰ and 1.8‰, respectively) compared with those from the less eutrophic Lake Chaohu, indicating that the isotopic signature might partially reflect the trophic states of their habitats. Mixing model results suggested that the benthic food web provides the primary carbon source for both shrimp species, and that E. modestus assimilated relatively more pelagic food sources than M. nipponensis in these lakes. Pigment contents and proximate compositions are important traits to evaluate the nutritional value of microalgae. The environmental condition and nutrient availability in the culture medium are hypothesised to regulate algal colour, nutritional composition and production. This study aimed to compare the pigment and proximate compositions in Tisochrysis lutea under phototrophic and mixotrophic conditions in an attempt to improve algal product quality. Algae were grown in the phototrophic and mixotrophic conditions at 50 μmol photons m?2 s?1 for 12 h daily, but 50 mM glycerol was added as a carbon source in the mixotrophic culture. The pigment contents in algae significantly increased in the mixotrophic condition, and the contents of chlorophylls a and c and carotenoids increased nearly 60 % compared with those in the phototrophic condition. The contents of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in algae were significantly higher while the content of monounsaturated fatty acids was significantly lower in the mixotrophic condition than those in the phototrophic condition. Although the contents of protein, lipid and carbohydrate in T. lutea were not different, their overall production was significantly enhanced in the mixotrophic condition compared to the phototrophic condition. This study indicates that mixotrophic culture promotes pigment and proximate production and the change of fatty acid profile in algae depends on the addition of organic carbon to the culture medium.  相似文献

Two adjacent saline, meromictic lakes in Saskatchewan host different populations of phototrophic bacteria. Deadmoose Lake hosts a population of Lamprocystis roseopersicina (Chromatiaceae) while in Waldsea Lake a population of a Chlorobium species (Chlorobiaceae) is dominant. Differences in light quantity, light quality, temperature, pH and Lamprocystis' capacity for photoorganoheterotrophic growth explain why different genera of phototrophic bacteria are found within the two lakes. These phototrophic bacteria make a significant contribution to total photosynthetic productivity, fixing 14.3 and 32 g C m-2 year -1 in Deadmoose and Waldsea Lake respectively.  相似文献

1. Viral and microbial loop dynamics were investigated over an annual cycle in three contrasting saline Antarctic lakes – Highway Lake (salinity 4‰), Pendant Lake (salinity 19‰) and Ace Lake, a meromictic system (with a mixolimnion salinity of 18‰) in order to assess the importance of viruses in extreme, microbially dominated systems. 2. Virus like particles (VLP) showed no clear seasonal pattern, with high concentrations occurring in both winter and summer (range 0.89 × 107 ± 0.038 to 12.017 × 107 ± 1.28 mL?1). VLP abundances reflected lake productivity based on chlorophyll a concentrations. Bacterial abundances and biomass did not correlate with VLP numbers except in Pendant Lake, the most productive of the three lakes studied. 3. Pendant Lake supported the highest bacterial biomass (range Highway: 18.44 ± 1.35 to 59.43 ± 2.80 ng C mL?1; Ace: 14.42 ± 2.69 to 68.39 ± 2.95 ng C mL?1; Pendant: 31.36 ± 3.94 to 115.95 ± 4.49 ng C mL?1) so that virus to bacteria ratios (VBR) (range 30.48 ± 7.96 to 96.67 ± 8.21) were higher in Ace Lake (range 30.58 ± 3.98 to 80.037 ± 1.60) and Highway Lake (range 18.63 ± 3.12 to 126.74 ± 6.50). 4. Negative correlations occurred between VLP and cryptophytes (dominant phototrophic nanoflagellates), suggesting that they were not hosts to lytic viruses. Among the other protists only the heterotrophic nanoflagellates of Highway Lake (dominated by the marine choanoflagellate Diaphanoeca grandis) showed a positive correlation with VLP. 5. The VLP was negatively correlated with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and temperature, both of which increased with ice thinning and breakout, increasing viral decay. In winter VLP probably persisted in cold, dark water. 6. High VLP concentrations and high VBR (values at the upper end of those reported for marine and lacustrine systems) indicated that viruses, most of which were probably bacteriophage, are a major element within the microbial communities in extreme, saline lakes.  相似文献

Volcanic crater lakes scattered throughout western Uganda are important local sources of water and fish. Two representative but contrasting crater lakes near the Kibale National Park were sampled in 2000; the hyper‐eutrophic Lake Saka, which is highly affected by agricultural practices, and the mesotrophic Lake Nkuruba that is still surrounded by intact forest. The food web structures in these two lakes were assessed using stable nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) isotope analyses, and the mercury (THg) transfer patterns were quantified. The δ15N results indicate that food webs in both lakes are abbreviated, with only one to two trophic levels from primary consumers. The Lake Saka biota had distinctively enriched δ13C values compared with those in Lake Nkuruba, which may be due to 12C‐limited phytoplankton blooms in this lake. In Lake Nkuruba, two introduced tilapiine species and the introduced guppy Poecilia reticulata fed predominantly upon invertebrates and decomposed terrestrial plant material. In Lake Saka, the introduced Nile perch Lates niloticus appeared to occupy the top trophic position, but stable isotope values of the endemic haplochromine cichlids exclude those as Nile perch prey items. THg was found to biomagnify through the food web, reaching highest concentrations in P. reticulata in Nkuruba, which tended to be higher than for L. niloticus in Saka, suggesting increased bioavailability of THg in Nkuruba. Maximum THg concentrations in fish never approached WHO recommended guidelines (200 ng g?1) designed to protect at‐risk groups.  相似文献
