Electron microscopy of cyanobacterium Pleurocapsa sp. CALU 1126 revealed that multiple fission proceeds by successive binary fissions. The cultivation conditions were determined when the number of baeocytes (products of multiple fission) was comparable with that of macrocytes (products of binary fission), and cell sorting was achieved for the first time. Juvenile baeocytes were shown to differ from macrocytes in: (1) the absence of sheath; (2) the linear-peripheral configuration of their lamellar system; (3) lower content of phycobiliproteins and higher content of carotenoids; (4) the set of PSII polypeptides. Baeocytes can therefore be considered differentiated cells characterized by the uncoupling between energy and biosynthetic metabolism.  相似文献

By means of differential interference contrast (DIC) and fluorescence microscopy, chromatin morphology and cytokinesis have been described in the cyanobacterium Pleurocapsa sp. CALU 1126 capable of multiple fission (multiple reproduction of the mother cell, the macrocyte, with formation of unique reproductive cells, the baeocytes). Two kinds of chromatin behavior have been revealed in the cell cycle: 1) the formation of numerous chromatin areas before their compartmentalization by multiple fission; 2) chromatin condensation in the phase of binary fission, and chromatin decondensation in growth period. The cytokinetic essence of multiple fission has been shown to consist of successive binary fissions of the macrocyte, while in between the mother cells (pre-baeocytes) do not grow.  相似文献

Summary An ultrastructural examination of cell division in two baeocyte producing cyanobacteria,Pleurocapsa minor andDermocarpa violaceae, reveals two distinct patterns of binary (transverse) fission. Septate binary fission, inPleurocapsa minor, involves centripetal synthesis and deposition of the mucopolymer cell wall layer (L 2). The ingrowth of the cytoplasmic membrane and L 1 cell wall layer, along with the synthesis of the L 2 cell wall layer, results in the formation of a prominent septum. Partitioning of the cell occurs by the constriction of the outer cell wall layers (L 3 and L 4) through the septum. InDermocarpa violaceae, constrictive binary fission occurs by the simultaneous ingrowth or constriction of the cytoplasmic membrane and all cell wall layers (L1, L2, L3, L4). Septate and constrictive binary fission may proceed symmetrically (medially) or asymmetrically (nonmedially). Multiple fission occurs regularly inDermocarpa violaceae and provides for a rapid means of reproduction when compared to binary fission. Successive radial and tangential divisions of the protoplast result in formation of many small daughter cells (baeocytes). The process of multiple fission is similar to septate binary fission with reduced septa being formed. However, constriction of the outer cell wall layers, through the septa, proceeds concurrently with septum formation.  相似文献

This paper describes a new genus and species of endolithic microorganism, Cyanosaccus piriformis Lukas and Golubic (Cyanophyta, Pleurocapsales). It is characterized by 1) having one to four spherical to pear-shaped cells within a stalked, gelatinous sheath, 2) its mode of reproduction by release of a large number of baeocytes produced by the proximal daughter cell following transverse binary fission of the parent cell, and 3) its ability to bore into and dwell within carbonate substrates in the marine environment. Its habit of asymmetrical sheath production allies it with the common microboring genera Hyella and Solentia within the family Hyellaceae. Cyanosaccus is a common inhabitant of mollusk shells found in water depths ranging from +0.5 to –75 m MLW on the eastern Florida continental margin and in carbonate sands or rocks in the intertidal and subtidal zones of the Bermuda and Bahama Islands. Its distribution within and among inhabited substrates is patchy due to its mode of reproduction and growth.  相似文献

Trophozoites grown in vitro were shown to undergo binary fission by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Standard fixation with subsequent embedding in Spurr was employed using 3% glutaraldehyde and 1% osmium tetroxide with 5% sucrose added to both fixatives and 0.1 M cacodylate buffer washes. Trophozoites were grown on WI-38 cells in vitro. Trophozoites were found in various stages of fission. The dividing trophozoite has daughter cells that are rounder than the pleomorphic, non-dividing trophozoites. Tubular forms external to the dividing trophozoites were decreased in number; tubular forms when present were concentrated around the forming septa. Nuclear material was sometimes, but not always, well defined in both daughter cells. There was no concentration of nuclear material at the poles. Vacuoles without membrane were present in the dividing forms. Separate nuclear regions were sometimes found in the dividing trophozoites. These observations suggest that binary fission does occur in culture; however, the significance of binary fission to the life cycle of Pneumocystis carinii (Pc) is not yet clear.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. A full account of the nuclear changes during binary fission and conjugation in a local race of Blepharisma is presented in this paper. The macronucleus consists of 2 nodes connected by a strand. Number of micronuclei varies from 6 to 18. During binary fission, condensation of macronucleus is followed by elongation and thinning of the middle region which finally breaks. Daughter nuclei later attain the typical vegetative form. Notably, during binary fission some micronuclei appear to complete their mitoses by the time the macronucleus attains the condensed form, while others lag behind and exhibit practically every stage of mitosis.
During conjugation, from 6 to 10 micronuclei undergo the first pregamic division, the same number through the second division, and two products of the second division take part in the third division. The rest degenerate. Division products of the nuclei in the paraoral region take part in synkaryon formation. The synkaryon undergoes either 2 or 3 divisions. In the former case, of the 4 products, 2 become the macronuclear anlagen, one the micronucleus and the fourth degenerates. In the latter case, of the 8 products, 3 to 4 become the macronuclear anlagen and the rest become micronuclei. Chromatin elimination has been observed during the division of the macronuclear anlage, followed by an extra metagamic fission of the cell.
Comparison with two other races from India and an American race indicates considerable diversity in the structure and behaviour of the nuclear apparatus in different races of Blepharisma undulans.  相似文献

The biphenyl-degrading Gram-negative bacterium Cupriavidus basilensis (formerly Ralstonia sp.) SBUG 290 uses various aromatic compounds as carbon and energy sources and has a high capacity to transform bisphenol A (BPA), which is a hormonally active substance structurally related to biphenyl. Biphenyl-grown cells initially hydroxylated BPA and converted it to four additional products by using three different transformation pathways: (a) formation of multiple hydroxylated BPA, (b) ring fission, and (c) transamination followed by acetylation or dimerization. Products of the ring fission pathway were non-toxic and all five products exhibited a significantly reduced estrogenic activity compared to BPA. Cell cultivation with phenol and especially in nutrient broth (NB) resulted in a reduced biotransformation rate and lower product quantities, and NB-grown cells did not produce all five products in detectable amounts. Thus, the question arose whether enzymes of the biphenyl degradation pathway are involved in the transformation of BPA and was addressed by proteomic analyses.

A new and unusual microsporidian species was found in the intestinal epithelium of dipteran larvae of genus Sciara. Merogony is by binary and multiple fission. Sporogonial plasmodia become enclosed in ornate, thick-walled cysts. The cyst contents become cut up by temporary cytoplasmic partitions to make numerous binucleate cells (sporonts) Each divides to produce one normal and one abortive sporoblast. Because this species has a number of unusual features, a new family and a new genus are proposed to contain it.  相似文献

The yeast Trichosporon mucoides, grown on either glucose or phenol, was able to transform biphenyl into a variety of mono-, di-, and trihydroxylated derivatives hydroxylated on one or both aromatic rings. While some of these products accumulated in the supernatant as dead end products, the ortho-substituted dihydroxylated biphenyls were substrates for further oxidation and ring fission. These ring fission products were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses as phenyl derivatives of hydroxymuconic acids and the corresponding pyrones. Seven novel products out of eight resulted from the oxidation and ring fission of 3,4-dihydroxybiphenyl. Using this compound as a substrate, 2-hydroxy-4-phenylmuconic acid, (5-oxo-3-phenyl-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-yl)acetic acid, and 3-phenyl-2-pyrone-6-carboxylic acid were identified. Ring cleavage of 3,4,4′-trihydroxybiphenyl resulted in the formation of [5-oxo-3-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-yl]acetic acid, 4-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-2-pyrone-6-carboxylic acid, and 3-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-2-pyrone-6-carboxylic acid. 2,3,4-Trihydroxybiphenyl was oxidized to 2-hydroxy-5-phenylmuconic acid, and 4-phenyl-2-pyrone-6-carboxylic acid was the transformation product of 3,4,5-trihydroxybiphenyl. All these ring fission products were considerably less toxic than the hydroxylated derivatives.  相似文献

The effects of various kinds of nitrogen compounds on the proliferation patterns ofAnkistrodesmus gracilis were examined. Among the tested compounds, the addition of peptone, arginine or glutamine to the N-free medium was the most effective on cell growth. The effectiveness was also shown in media containing one of several kinds of amino acid. In both peptone and arginine media the alga proliferated with multiple fission type of cell division, whereas the cultures grown in glutamine or serine medium contained 2-celled colonies at high frequencies. The latter was an efficient culture condition for cell reproduction with binary fission. The evidence for the behavior of nuclear and cytoplasmic division in these growth patterns were obtained from observations of thin sectioned materials.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted on rabbits; a study was made of the influence of multiple antigen stimulation on the indices of erythropoiesis. Isotonic physiological saline was administered daily in control rabbits. The erythroid bone marrow series responded in the same direction both to the antigen and to the non-antigen stimulation. There was noted an increase of the percentage content of macrocytes, coinciding in time with reticulocytosis in the immunized animals at the second stage (the 50th day). Normalization of the character of the erythrocyte distribution occurred in the control group at this period. In case of empolyment of the antigen stimulation, the second stage can be regarded as the compensatory-regenerative response to the damaging action of the antigen.  相似文献

Summary The dinoflagellateCrypthecodinium cohnii Biecheler propagates by both binary and multiple fission. By a newly developed mutagenesis protocol based on using ethyl methanesulfonate and a cell size screening method, a cell cycle mutant,mƒ2, was isolated with giant cells which predominantly divide by multiple fission. The average cell size of the mutantmƒ2 is larger than the controlC. cohnii. Cell cycle synchronization experiments suggest that mutantmƒ2, when compared with the control strain, has a prolonged G1 phase with a corresponding delay of the G2+M phase.  相似文献

A Bermudan population of the fissiparous holothurian Holothuria parvula (Selenka) was sampled over a 13-month period (1984–1985). Fission was most frequent in the summer when water temperatures were > 25 °C. During fission, the holothurian split into roughly equal parts, and there was little difference in survival of the oral and anal ends. Regeneration of a new gut is a priority and feeding was possible within 2 months of fission. The majority of growth following fission occurred between April and July, just prior to the peak occurrence of fission. Many individuals were fully regenerated within a year, so fission is possibly an annual event. Individuals showing evidence of multiple fission were found. The capacity for sexual reproduction was limited and it appeared to occur mainly during the summer, which was also the peak period for asexual reproduction. No small (< 18 mm) individuals were ever found suggesting that larval recruitment to this population had not recently been successful. The population has probably been maintained recently by fission.  相似文献

Summary Euglypha acanthophora and Euglypha strigosa, testate amoebae with siliceous shells, undergo binary fission producing daughter cells. The siliceous plates from which the shells are constructed are produced in the Golgi and perinuclear regions of the parent. At binary fission these pass along microtubule pathways and are manoeuvered into position in the daughter-cell by microtubule (20–25 nm) and microfilament (7–9 nm) systems. The latter in the form of adhesion plaques are instrumental in the coordination and deployment of the shell-plates.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Histriculus vorax (Stokes) Corliss, a hypotrichous ciliate, has been separated from activated sludge and cultured monoxenically in the laboratory. The asexual life cycle has been observed and the stages of development photographed. There are large variations in shape and size of cells within clonal cultures. Both large (190–250 μ long) and small (70–140 μ long) cells are capable of normal asexual binary fission but only the large cells are able to grow endogenous buds, which, when mature, are extruded through the body wall of the mother cell. Newly deposited buds can either develop directly into an embryonic form, or, if unfavorable conditions prevail, first encyst. Similar embryonic stages bearing caudal and frontal cirri are produced both by direct development and by excystment of the encysted bud. Embryos develop rapidly into trophic forms which finally grow into small adults capable of asexual binary fission. During binary fission the nuclei behave as described previously for other members of the Oxytrichidae. A reorganization band forms at the outer end of each macronucleus, and these bands move along the macronuclei towards each other, finally disappearing at the inner ends. A fusion nucleus is then formed which splits into 4 pieces, 2 of which pass to the proter and 2 to the opisthe. During bud formation the reorganisation bands form and move as in binary fission. No fusion nucleus is formed, but the macronuclei divide immediately after reorganization, and the anterior macronucleus of each pair so produced migrates to the budding region. The infraciliature of H. vorax resembles that of Opisthotricha monspessulana. 'Erratic' kinetosomes, which are present in the adult, divide during binary fission and so produce the infraciliature of the proter and opisthe. During bud formation the budding region receives a number of these 'erratic' kinetosomes from the mother cell, and these divide to form the infraciliature of the bud.  相似文献

The binary fission of 3 forms of marine Ceratium, C.gibberum, C.gibberum f.sinsitra and C.tripos f.atlantica was observed in culture. In either of the 3 forms, it is possible to make cell division take place under the condition of single cell culture. Both binary fission and chain formation have been observed. Concerning the relationship between binary fission and chain formation, light intensity may be considered as a controlling factor.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The development of Babesia caballi (Nuttall) in Dermacentor nitens Neumann was studied in smear preparations and histologic sections of ticks infected with this protozoan parasite. A majority of the parasites in equine erythrocytes ingested by the adult ticks apparently were destroyed. Smal spherical bodies 4–6 μ in diameter were the 1st developmental stages of B. caballi observed in the gut contents of ticks infected with this parasite. These spherical bodies apparently gave rise to clavate (club-shaped) bodies 10–14 μ long by 4–6 μ wide. The latter developed into large round bodies 12–16 μ in diameter that segmented into vermicular-shaped parasites, about 8–12 μ long by 2–4 μ wide; some penetrated the gut wall, some invaded other cells of the tick.
In the cells of the Malpighian tubules, hemolymph, and ovaries, the vermicular parasites underwent a secondary cycle of multiple fission, forming vermicules similar to those occurring earlier in the gut. Vermicules that invaded the ova underwent a similar multiple fission cycle during the larval stage of the tick.
Vermicules from the multiple fission cycle that occurred during the period of larval feeding invaded the salivary glands. A multiple fission cycle of increase within these glands resulted in large numbers of small, oval and piriform parasites, 2.5–3 μ, maximum dimension. These parasites became mixed with the salivary secretions, and presumably are the forms injected into the horse by the nymphs as they feed. The small oval and piriform parasites therefore appear to be the infective stage for the horse.  相似文献
