Adult male redtail guenons (Cercopithecus ascanius) live as resident males in heterosexual groups or as nonresident males outside groups. Data are reported here on movement and temporary intrusions by nonresident males in heterosexual groups. These data further elucidate the reproductive strategies of this class of individual. Observations of three radiocollared males provided data on the details of their movement relative to groups. Regular sampling of three heterosexual groups provided data on patterns of nonresident males' intrusions. During peak mating months, nonresident males formed loose affiliations with groups. The males affiliated with one group at a time, with each affiliation lasting several weeks. Nonresident male intrusions in groups were unevenly distributed and were not correlated with the number of potentially fertile females in each group. Estimates of male density indicate that there were about two nonresident males per group, which suggests an adult sex ratio of three females per male within the study area. Nonresident male redtail guenons apparently do not spread their reproductive efforts over several groups at once, but instead each male tends to direct his attention toward the group offering the best opportunity for reproductive payoffs. Factors that determine which groups they attempt to infiltrate may include the characteristics of resident males, female choice, or both, but the number of fertile females probably has no effect. The male low density and female-biased sex ratio among adults should facilitate resident males' attempts to monopolize fertilizations in groups; however, resident males were unable to prevent copulations by nonresident males even when only one nonresident was intruding in a group. 相似文献

The genomic relatedness between Listeria grayi and Listeria murrayi was reevaluated by using DNA-DNA hybridization, multilocus enzyme electrophoresis, and rRNA restriction fragment length polymorphism techniques. The high levels of similarity observed between the strains of these two species confirmed the data published since 1973 and indicated that they should be considered members of a single species. Two hybrid cell lines, KS-RL-3 (hybrid between TK? sheep kidney cells and rabbit lymphocytes) and CR-KS TK? (hybrid between rabbit β-cells and TK? sheep kidney cells), were assayed cytogenetically. It was shown that these hybrid cell lines were characterized by the presence of both sheep and rabbit chromosomes, with a number and structure which varied depending on the cell type and the number of passages. In some cases aberrant chromosomes were identified. The modal chromosome number was 121–135 (40.7%) in the KS-RL-3 cell line and 106–120 (51.6%) in the CR-KS TK? cell line. CR-KS TK? and KS-RL-3 cells were identified in the testicles and ear lobes of experimental animals during periods of 7 to 28 days after cell inoculation. Partial immunological tolerance of the hybrid cell lines was suggested. 相似文献

I report data collected on red-tailed guenon (Cercopithecus ascanius schmidti) fruit processing behaviors between June 1993 and April 1994. Red-tailed guenons consumed the fruit of Strychnos mitis in 542 of 2,930 fruit-eating events (FEEs). The monkeys spat out cleaned seeds of Strychnos mitis in a majority of these records (477/542; 88%); seeds were occasionally swallowed whole, but only when pulp was unripe (69/542; 12%). In 83% of the FEEs on Strychnos, the red-tailed guenons spat out seeds within 10 m of the removal site; they typically stayed in the same tree while processing fruit, and in 56% of the FEEs, they moved <1 m before spitting seeds. I monitored spat seeds to evaluate the impact of monkey fruit processing on seed fate. Results indicate that 83% of seeds spat out by the red-tailed guenons germinated, while only 12% of unprocessed seeds survived to germination (p < 0.01). Of the processed seeds that germinated, 60% survived to germination and seedling establishment, while only 5% of unprocessed seeds survived to seedling establishment (p < 0.01). Unprocessed seeds were also more likely to be attacked by seed predators (p < 0.01) and fungus (p < 0.01). Although there is generally high mortality in seeds/seedlings, mature trees of Strychnos mitis are found in groves of adults, under which dense populations of seedlings and saplings can occur. These data suggest that Strychnos mitis does not conform to expectations of the Janzen-Connell model of seed escape from parent trees. Instead, I suggest that by removing pulp, a process that results in a reduction of fungal pathogen attack, red-tailed guenons positively effect the seed survivorship of Strychnos mitis. Summary Interspecific F1 hybrids of Nicotiana debneyi Domin (2n=48) and N. umbratica Burbidge (2n=46), both belonging to the section Suaveolentes, showed a high degree of meiotic chromosome pairing. Two of the five F2 plants obtained exhibited chromosome mosaicism. The first colchiploid generation (C1) had the expected chromosome number of 2n=94 while C2 showed 2n=88, a loss of three pairs of chromosomes. This same chromosome number continued in further colchiploid generations, followed up to C5, except for a few plants in C3 which showed chromosome mosaicism. The F1 phenotype was stable through C1 to C5 and fertility was normal in colchiploids through all generations in spite of the loss of three pairs of chromosomes and chromosome mosaicism. This stability and fertility apparently reflect the tolerance of the genomes to the genetic adjustment of chromosome complements which is believed to be associated with the originally polyploid nature of the parental species and the chromosome doubling brought about in the amphidiploids. 相似文献

An asymmetric potato hybrid and its parental lines were cytogenetically examined. DAPI (4'-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) staining was used to count chromosomes in all analysed lines and revealed the presence of minichromosomes in the hybrid genome. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with rDNA sequence as a probe helped to determine the ploidy level of analysed lines and revealed that none of the minichromosomes contains rDNA repeats. CMA (chromomycin A3) band occurred to be a new chromosome marker that identifies potato chromosome No.1. It was possible to detect a deletion in one of four chromosomes No. 1 of the asymmetric potato hybrid. On the basis of these analyses a karyotype of the asymmetric hybrid was constructed. 相似文献

Karyotypes of the hybrid cell lines NS-RL-3 (TK- -sheep kidney cells and rabbit lymphocytes) and betaCR-NS (TK- -rabbit beta-cells and TK- -sheep kidney cells) were investigated. It was shown that both hybrid cell lines were characterized by presence of both sheep and rabbit chromosomes, which number and structure varies depending on the cell type and the number of passages. In some cases the aberrant chromosomes were identified. It was observed, that 40-50% of the NS-RL-3 cells survived in culture in the presence of the human blood serum, and also were identified during 7-28 days after their introduction into the organism of the animal. Summary Q-and C-band heteromorphisms were determined by sequentially staining cells from 81 members of an American Black kindred. The incidence of heteromorphs is reported for 14-people who married into the family.Small pericentric inversions of chromosome 3 were found in 23 kindred members, three of whom were homozygous. Six complete chromosome 9 inversions and a single partial inv9 were detected. There was no apparent phenotypic effect associated with the inversions, nor were duplication-deficiency chromosomes observed.Evidence for preferential segregation of Q-heteromorphs is reported, and comparison with data from other authors points to chromosome 13 as showing the most distortion.This paper is based on a thesis submitted by the senior author in partial fulfillment of the Ph. We documented the presence of gastrointestinal nematodes and lung mites in two red-tailed monkeys, Cercopithecus ascanius schmidti, in Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. We detected lung mites, Pneumonyssus duttoni, in the trachea and bronchioles, and five species of nematodes, Oesophagostomum pachycephalum, Ternidens deminutus, Streptopharagus pigmentatus, Primasubulura distans, and Trichuris sp. in their gastrointestinal tracts. This is the first report of a parasitological survey for the red-tailed monkey in Mahale Mountains National Park, and O. pachycephalum, T. deminutus, and P. distans were found for the first time in the red-tailed monkey. 相似文献
