Type I diabetic bone phenotype is location but not gender dependent   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Bone is highly dynamic and responsive. Bone location, bone type and gender can influence bone responses (positive, negative or none) and magnitude. Type I diabetes induces bone loss and increased marrow adiposity in the tibia. We tested if this response exhibits gender and location dependency by examining femur, vertebrae and calvaria of male and female, control and diabetic BALB/c mice. Non-diabetic male mice exhibited larger body, muscle, and fat mass, and increased femur BMD compared to female mice, while vertebrae and calvarial bone parameters did not exhibit gender differences. Streptozotocin-induced diabetes caused a reduction in BMD at all sites examined irrespective of gender. Increased marrow adiposity was evident in diabetic femurs and calvaria (endochondrial and intramembranous formed bones, respectively), but not in vertebrae. Leptin-deficient mice also exhibit location dependent bone responses and we found that serum leptin levels were significantly lower in diabetic compared to control mice. However, in contrast to leptin-deficient mice, the vertebrae of T1-diabetic mice exhibit bone loss, not gain. Taken together, our findings indicate that TI-diabetic bone loss in mice is not gender, bone location or bone type dependent, while increased marrow adiposity is location dependent.  相似文献

Gender exponence in underived French nouns is particularly opaque. In this paper, we identify two subsystems of gender assignment: monogendered nouns, bi-gendered nouns; we show what they share and where they diverge. We show how the notorious floating final consonants of the language are handled in each subsystem for purposes of gender exponence. Our analysis and proposals develop in two steps: (a) we elaborate on the internal structure of √P, arguing that it is more richly articulated than had been assumed in previous work; (b) we propose that a gender feature sitting on n probes into its complement √P for valuation. Our proposal opens a range of selectional options of √P by n. These selectional options along with the probing device they feed, are shown to account for the French evidence.  相似文献

In Frisian, grammatical gender is an abstract lexical property, which is not spelled out on the noun. It manifests itself in an indirect way, through the agreement relations the noun enters into. It is, thus, understandable that phonological regularities and residual (abstract) case marking in a prepositional context can be crucial for two instances of historical gender change in Frisian. In the Dutch–Frisian language contact situation, however, factors which are strictly speaking non-linguistic in nature play a role as well. These are, first, the low degree of standardisation of Frisian at the time the gender change set in and, secondly, distancing from Dutch at the time when Frisian developed its own standard vis-à-vis Dutch, which implies the propagation of the gender which diverges from the Dutch one. It is the interplay between these factors which lends the case of gender change in Frisian an inherent linguistic significance. Not every Frisian de-word could become an it-word and vice versa, since the language system puts its limits here. For instance, all nouns ending in schwa are de-words, a formal regularity which prevented them from switching to it-words. Neither are there only regular patterns of gender change in Frisian. The general tendencies are clear, but as far as individual words are concerned, there is much which must be left unexplained.  相似文献

We conduct an intercultural experiment in three locations on three different continents to elicit competitiveness and study whether individual differences in competitiveness are related to handedness. Being a “lefty” (i.e., having either a dominant left hand or a dominant left foot) is associated with neurological differences which are determined prenatally, and can therefore be seen as a proxy for innate differences. In large-scale data with incentivized choices from 3664 participants from India, Norway and Tanzania, we find a significant gender gap in competitiveness in all cultures. However, we find inconsistent results when comparing the competitiveness of lefties and righties. In north-east India we find that lefties of both genders are significantly more competitive than righties. In Norway we find that lefty men are more competitive than any other group, but women’s competitiveness is not related to handedness. In Tanzania, we find no relationship between handedness and the competitiveness of either gender. The merged data show weak evidence of a positive correlation between being a lefty and competitiveness for men, but no such evidence for women. Thus, our data provide suggestive but not robust evidence that individual and gender differences in competitiveness are partially determined by innate factors, where innate factors are proxied by the complex, prenatally shaped trait of handedness.  相似文献

Many right-leaning politicians claim that normative Islamic perspectives on gender are at odds with the Western values and act as barriers to immigrant integration. Our interviews with 256 second-generation Somali-Canadians, however, suggest that gender-egalitarian identities are achieved – they are constructed and deployed by our participants to practice integration and express belonging in Canada. In this study, we move beyond analysis of attaining gender-egalitarian roles as a result of immigration and propose an understanding of gender as a form of Bourdieusian cultural capital that, depending on social values, functions as symbolic capital rendering individuals and groups as advantaged or disadvantaged. We, therefore, analyse modalities of “doing” gender as potential strategies of accumulating capital in furthering successful integration. Our study contributes to the emergent literature in migration studies that examines gender in relation to ethnic and national identities, and the extent to which it may impact integration experiences of second-generation Muslim immigrants.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the interconnections between gender inequality and maternal deprivation, on the one hand, and the health of children (of either sex) and of adults that the children grow into (again, of either sex). The basic message of the paper is that women's deprivation in terms of nutrition and healthcare rebounds on the society as a whole in the form of ill-health of their offspring-males and females alike-both as children and as adults. There are a variety of pathways through which women's deprivation can affect the health of the society as a whole. This paper focuses on the pathways that operate through undernourishment of the mother. Maternal deprivation adversely affects the health of the fetus, which in turn leads to long-term health risks that extend not just into childhood but into adulthood as well. There are, however, important differences in the way children and adults experience the consequences of maternal deprivation via fetal deprivation. In particular, the pathways that lead to their respective risk factors and the circumstances under which those risk factors actually translate into ill-health are very different. These differences are best understood through the concept of 'overlapping health transition' in which two different regimes of diseases coexist side by side. Gender inequality exacerbates the old regime of diseases among the less affluent through the pathway of childhood undernutrition. At the same time it also exacerbates the new regime of diseases among the relatively more affluent through a pathway that has come to be known as the 'Barker hypothesis'. Gender inequality thus leads to a double jeopardy-simultaneously aggravating both regimes of diseases and thus raising the economic cost of overlapping health transition.  相似文献

This paper investigates variation in folk medical beliefs in a Tarascan community in west-central Mexico. The data are from a structured interview completed with ten traditional curers and a like-sized comparison group of noncurers. Three possible patterns of interinformant agreement are described and tested using the quadratic assignment program. The results suggest that although curers and noncurers do differ, the differences are not so great that they represent two variant systems of medical beliefs. Rather, there is a single system of beliefs common to both groups, but with curers showing higher agreement among themselves in expressing this system than noncurers. This finding, and a related one showing higher agreement among older informants, are explained in terms of culture learning. Curers and older people share more knowledge about illness because of their greater experience in both dealing with and communicating about illness. A model of folk medical knowledge is then presented and systematic variation from this model examined.  相似文献

This paper estimates how previous major pandemic events affected economic and gender inequalities in the short- to medium run. We consider the impact of six major pandemic episodes – H3N2 Flu (1968), SARS (2003), H1N1 Swine Flu (2009), MERS (2012), Ebola (2014), and Zika (2016) – on cross-country inequalities in samples of 46–167 countries observed over 1950–2019. Results show that the past pandemics have moderately increased income inequality in the affected countries in the period of four to five years after the pandemic’s start. On the other hand, we do not find any robust negative impacts on wealth inequality. The results concerning gender inequality are less consistent, but we find some evidence of declining gender equality among the hardest hit countries. Moreover, the gender gap in unemployment grew within the four years after the onset of the pandemic.  相似文献

In NMR protein structure determination, after the resonance peaks have been identified and chemical shifts from peaks across multiple spectra have been grouped into spin systems, associating these spin systems to their host residues is the key toward the success of structural information extraction and thus the key to the success of the structure calculation. To achieve accurate enough structure calculation, a near complete and accurate assignment is a prerequisite. There are two pieces of information that can be used into the assignment, one of which is the adjacency information among the spin systems and the other is the signature information of the spin systems. The signature information reflects the fact that, generally speaking, for one type of amino acid residing in a specific local structural environment, the chemical shifts for the atoms inside the amino acid fall into some very narrow distinct ranges. In most of the existing work, normal distributions are assumed with means and standard deviations statistically collected from the available data. In this paper, we followed a simple yet effective histogram-based way to estimate for every spin system the probability that its host is a certain type of amino acid residing in a certain type of secondary structure. We used two combinations of chemical shifts to demonstrate the effectiveness of this type of histogram-based scoring schemes.  相似文献

The appearance of the external genitalia is the major determinant of the social sex, which is announced at or shortly after birth. In the absence of normal development of the external genitalia, definitive gender assignment and its announcement have to be postponed. While over the past 20 years the pathogenesis of most disorders causing abnormal development of the genitalia have been elucidated, our knowledge regarding the impact of these defects upon the psychosexual development is rather rudimentary. This information, however, is needed not only to establish criteria for correct sex assignment but also to design relevant outcome studies. Culture is an important part of the context in which decisions are made on sex assignment of patients with abnormalities of the external genitalia. Cultural differences in dealing with intersexuality and intersex individuals not only influences the patient's own psychosexual development but also medical decisions regarding sex assignment and consecutive management. There is evidence that attitudes concerning gender and sexuality, including the acceptance of intersexuality, differ significantly between various cultures. Thus cross-cultural studies might allow a new approach in dealing with intersexed persons, their families, and their social background, a most important aspect considering the recent discussions and criticisms of patients and individuals affected with intersex disorders.  相似文献

Mexican mestizo gender imagery is deceptively simple, represented through categorical and essentialist classifications of male and female. However, the essen‐tialist notions which ground gender as unambiguous simultaneously work so as to disrupt the seemingly unequivocal categories of male and female. This article explores the way gendered distinctions are generated by examining the interconnections between heterosexual and male homosexual gender discourses in two Mexican mestizo contexts. Particular emphasis is placed on the significance of sexuality for eliciting meanings of gender, focusing on those cultural phenomena ‐ such as motherhood, virginity, machismo, penetration ‐ which serve to constitute same‐sex relations and cross‐sex relations differently.  相似文献

This article evaluates the influence of gender on diurnal and postlunch period variations in subjective activation and mood. This topic is not often addressed in the literature; particularly, little attention has been paid to how biological rhythms might bias research results. We studied 40 university student volunteers (20 men, 20 women) aged 18 to 23 years old (X = 20.23, SD = 1.03); they responded to questions on eight unipolar visual analog scales every hour from 08:00 to 21:00. Gender differences were observed in both diurnal and postlunch variations for scales of positive activation (alertness, vigor); sleepiness, however, was only sensitive to diurnal variation, and weariness was sensitive only to a postlunch effect. Women displayed a morning- type pattern, with their optimal moment (11:00) coming 2h earlier than for men, and their activation ratings ranged more widely. The only mood scale that showed differences related to gender was that of happiness, for which women had a higher diurnal mean, a diurnal peak 2h earlier, and a less-intense postlunch effect. Endogenous control of rhythmic pattern appears to be less intense in women, probably due to the coexistence of circamensual rhythmicity, although environmental or sociocultural influences may play a modulating role. Chronopsychological gender differences in affective states should be studied further given the implication they have for the prevention and treatment of mood disorders. Grammatical agreement means that features associated with one linguistic unit (for example number or gender) become associated with another unit and then possibly overtly expressed, typically with morphological markers. It is one of the key mechanisms used in many languages to show that certain linguistic units within an utterance grammatically depend on each other. Agreement systems are puzzling because they can be highly complex in terms of what features they use and how they are expressed. Moreover, agreement systems have undergone considerable change in the historical evolution of languages. This article presents language game models with populations of agents in order to find out for what reasons and by what cultural processes and cognitive strategies agreement systems arise. It demonstrates that agreement systems are motivated by the need to minimize combinatorial search and semantic ambiguity, and it shows, for the first time, that once a population of agents adopts a strategy to invent, acquire and coordinate meaningful markers through social learning, linguistic self-organization leads to the spontaneous emergence and cultural transmission of an agreement system. The article also demonstrates how attested grammaticalization phenomena, such as phonetic reduction and conventionalized use of agreement markers, happens as a side effect of additional economizing principles, in particular minimization of articulatory effort and reduction of the marker inventory. More generally, the article illustrates a novel approach for studying how key features of human languages might emerge.  相似文献

A wide range of research areas in molecular biology and medical biochemistry require a reliable enzyme classification system, e.g., drug design, metabolic network reconstruction and system biology. When research scientists in the above mentioned areas wish to unambiguously refer to an enzyme and its function, the EC number introduced by the Nomenclature Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) is used. However, each and every one of these applications is critically dependent upon the consistency and reliability of the underlying data for success. We have developed tools for the validation of the EC number classification scheme. In this paper, we present validated data of 3788 enzymatic reactions including 229 sub-subclasses of the EC classification system. Over 80% agreement was found between our assignment and the EC classification. For 61 (i.e., only 2.5%) reactions we found that their assignment was inconsistent with the rules of the nomenclature committee; they have to be transferred to other sub-subclasses. We demonstrate that our validation results can be used to initiate corrections and improvements to the EC number classification scheme.  相似文献

Gender assignment errors are common in some animal species and lead to inaccuracies in downstream analyses. Procedures for detecting gender misassignment are available for array‐based SNP data but are still being developed for genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) data. In this study, we describe a method for using GBS data to predict gender using X and Y chromosomal SNPs. From a set of 1286 X chromosomal and 23 Y chromosomal deer (Cervus sp.) SNPs discovered from GBS sequence reads, a prediction model was built using a training dataset of 422 Red deer and validated using a test dataset of 868 Red deer and Wapiti deer. Prediction was based on the proportion of heterozygous genotypes on the X chromosome and the proportion of non‐missing genotypes on the Y chromosome observed in each individual. The concordance between recorded gender and predicted gender was 98.6% in the training dataset and 99.3% in the test dataset. The model identified five individuals across both datasets with incorrect recorded gender and was unable to predict gender for another five individuals. Overall, our method predicted gender with a high degree of accuracy and could be used for quality control in gender assignment datasets or for assigning gender when unrecorded, provided a suitable reference genome is available.  相似文献

Sex assignment of patients with disorders of somatosexual differentiation is a controversial topic. The aim is to enable the patient to develop a stable gender identity during childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Enormous advances have recently been made in our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of sexual differentiation and it is understood that long-term outcome may depend on the underlying diagnosis. There is increasing evidence that genital development is dependent on the action of androgenic steroids; moreover, both androgens and oestrogens may have an impact on other developing organs including neuronal structures such as the brain. Long-term outcome studies on the various intersexuality disorders are desperately needed in order to establish a basis for evidence-based medicine regarding sex assignment and treatment options. Premature decisions leading to irreversible interventions before an accurate diagnosis has been established must be avoided.  相似文献

Flowering plants are able to develop gametes throughout their lives. As a consequence, environmental conditions can impact this development and alter a plant's functional gender or the degree to which it achieves fitness through male or female function. Two dimorphic breeding systems are widespread among angiosperm families: gynodioecy (hermaphrodites and females) and dioecy (males and females). Gynodioecy can evolve into dioecy, via loss of female function on the hermaphrodites, or it can remain stable. Here I discuss how developmental plasticity of gender can impact the sex ratio of populations and thereby influence the transition of one breeding system into another. I review studies showing that greater plasticity of fruit production by hermaphrodites as compared with females causes sex ratios among populations to vary in response to environmental conditions, with higher female frequency expected in harsh or low-quality sites. I also review how dioecy may evolve in dry sites to avoid inbreeding and any consequent inbreeding depression. Taken together, these studies show the importance of understanding how ecological development affects functional gender and consequently the evolutionary stability or malleability of dimorphic breeding systems.  相似文献

Male, female and ovariectomized (to mimic menopause) guinea pigs were fed a saturated (SFA) or a polyunsaturated (PUFA) fat diet for 4 weeks to determine the effects of dietary fat saturation on lipoprotein levels and composition and to assess whether gender and hormonal status modulate the cholesterolemic response. Both diets contained 15g/100 g fat and 0.04 g/100 g cholesterol and were identical in composition except for the type of fat. The SFA diet contained 50% saturated fat (25% lauric + myristic fatty acids), 25% PUFA and 25% monounsaturated fatty acids while the PUFA diet had 50% PUFA (linoleic acid), 25% monounsaturated and 25% SFA fatty acids. Plasma LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) was an average 21% lower in guinea pigs fed PUFA compared to those fed SFA (P < 0.05). In addition, ovariectomized guinea pigs, both in the SFA and PUFA groups, had 20–33% higher LDL-C than either males or females (P < 0.01). VLDL cholesterol was 70% higher in the PUFA-fed animals (P < 0.0001). A gender effect was observed in plasma HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) with females and ovariectomized guinea pigs having 30–42% higher HDL-C than males (P < 0.01). LDL susceptibility to oxidation was not affected by dietary fat saturation or gender. In contrast, VLDL and LDL composition were significantly influenced by diet and gender. VLDL particles were larger in size in guinea pigs fed the SFA diets (P < 0.01) while LDL particles were larger in female guinea pigs (P < 0.001). Hepatic lipids were influenced by the interaction between diet and group. Hepatic cholesterol (P < 0.01) and TAG concentrations (P < 0.0001) were highest in female guinea pigs fed the PUFA diet. Since the liver is the major site of lipoprotein synthesis and catabolism, these results suggest that not only diet but also gender may play a major role in determining the composition and size of lipoproteins.  相似文献

Around the world, and in spite of their higher life expectancy, women tend to report worse health than men until old age. Explanations for this gender gap in self-perceived health may be different in China than in other countries due to the traditional phenomenon of son preference. We examine several possible reasons for the gap using the Chinese SAGE data. We first rule out differential reporting by gender as a possible explanation, exploiting information on anchoring vignettes in eight domains of health functioning. Decomposing the gap in general self-assessed health, we find that about 31% can be explained by socio-demographic factors, most of all by discrimination against women in education in the 20th century. A more complete specification including chronic conditions and health functioning fully explains the remainder of the gap (about 69%). Adding chronic conditions and health functioning also explains at least two thirds of the education contribution, suggesting how education may affect health. In particular, women's higher rates of arthritis, angina and eye diseases make the largest contributions to the gender health gap, by limiting mobility, increasing pain and discomfort, and causing sleep problems and a feeling of low energy.  相似文献
