Electromechanical delay (EMD) values were obtained using a cross-correlation technique for a series of 14 repetitive submaximal dynamic isometric contractions of the vastus lateralis performed by five subjects. To avoid a phase lag, which is introduced with one-way filtering, the EMG was processed with a bi-directional application of a second-order Butterworth filter. A mean EMD value of 86 ms (SD = 5.1 ms) was found. Moreover, contraction and relaxation delays were computed and compared. There was a significant difference between the contraction and relaxation delays (P less than 0.005). The mean contraction delay was 81.9 ms and the mean relaxation delay was 88.8 ms. Despite this significant difference, the computed contraction and relaxation delay values lie in the same range as the total phase lag, calculated with the cross-correlation technique. The magnitude of EMD values found supports the need to account for this delay when interpreting temporal aspects of patterns of intermuscular coordination.  相似文献

Muscle co-activation around the knee is important during ambulation and balance. The wide range of methodological approaches for the quantification of co-activation index (CI) makes comparisons across studies and populations difficult. The present study determined within- and between-session reliability of different methodological approaches for the quantification of the CI of the knee extensor and flexor muscles during maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs). Eight healthy volunteers participated in two repeated testing sessions. A series of knee extension MVICs of the dominant leg with concomitant torque and electromyographic (EMG) recordings were captured. CI was calculated utilizing different analytical approaches. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) showed that within-session measures displayed higher reliability (ICC > 0.861) and lower variability (Coefficient of variation; CV < 21.8%) than between-session measures (ICC < 0.645; CV > 24.2%). A selection of a 500 ms or larger window of RMS EMG activity around the PT delivered more reliable and less variable results than other approaches. Our findings suggest that the CI can provide a reliable measure for comparisons among conditions and is best utilized for within-session experimental designs.  相似文献

Parkinson’s disease (PD) related decreases in muscle strength may result from both central and peripheral factors. However, the effect of PD on the neuromuscular system, such as motor unit activation properties, remains unclear. The purpose of the present study was to compare the spatial distribution pattern of electromyographic activity during sustained contractions in healthy subjects and PD patients. Twenty-five female PD patients and 25 healthy age-matched female control subjects performed ramp submaximal contractions during an isometric knee extension from 20% to 80% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). To evaluate alterations in the spatial electromyography (EMG) potential distribution, normalized root mean square (RMS), modified entropy, coefficient of variation, and correlation coefficients were calculated from multi-channel surface electromyography at 10% force increments. The comparison between PD and healthy subjects revealed that, during increased force exertions, PD patients exhibited less change in normalized RMS, modified entropy, coefficient of variation, and pattern of spatial EMG distribution. These data showed that the heterogeneity and the changes in the activation pattern are smaller in the PD patients than in healthy subjects. This finding may be associated with central adaptation and/or peripheral changes in PD patients.  相似文献

Fiber type composition of the vastus lateralis muscle of young men and women.   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
This study presents data collected over the past 10 years on the muscle fiber type composition of the vastus lateralis muscle of young men and women. Biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis muscle of 55 women (21.2+/-2.2 yr) and 95 men (21.5+/-2.4 yr) who had volunteered to participate in various research projects. Six fiber types (I, IC, IIC, IIA, IIAB, and IIB) were classified using mATPase histochemistry, and cross-sectional area was measured for the major fiber types (I, IIA, and IIB). Myosin heavy chain (MHC) content was determined electrophoretically on all of the samples from the men and on 26 samples from the women. With the exception of fiber Type IC, no significant differences were found between men and women for muscle fiber type distribution. The vastus lateralis muscle of both the men and women contained approximately 41% I, 1% IC, 1% IIC, 31% IIA, 6% IIAB, and 20% IIB. However, the cross-sectional area of all three major fiber types was larger for the men compared to the women. In addition, the Type IIA fibers were the largest for the men, whereas the Type I fibers tended to be the largest for the women. Therefore, gender differences were found with regard to the area occupied by each specific fiber type: IIA>I>IIB for the men and I>IIA>IIB for the women. These data establish normative values for the mATPase-based fiber type distribution and sizes in untrained young men and women.  相似文献

The relationship between intramuscular pH and the frequency components of the surface electromyographic (EMG) power spectrum from the vastus lateralis muscle was studied in eight healthy male subjects during brief dynamic exercise. The studies were carried out in placebo control and metabolic alkalosis induced by oral administration of NaHCO3. At the onset of exercise, blood pH was 0.08 units higher in alkalosis compared with placebo. Muscle lactate accumulation during exercise was higher in alkalosis (32 +/- 5 mmol/kg wet wt) than in placebo (17 +/- 4 mmol/kg wet wt), but no difference in intramuscular pH was found between the two conditions. The EMG power spectrum was shifted toward lower frequencies during fatigue in the control condition (10.1 +/- 0.9%), and these spectral shifts, evaluated from changes in the mean power frequency (MPF) of the EMG power spectrum, were further accentuated in alkalosis (19 +/- 2%). Although the changes in frequency components of EMG correlated with muscle lactate accumulation (r = 0.68, P less than 0.01), no direct relationship with muscle pH was observed. We conclude that alkalosis results in a greater reduction in MPF associated with a higher muscle lactate accumulation. However, the good correlation observed between the two variables is not likely causative, and a dissociation between intramuscular pH and the increase in the low-frequency content of EMG power spectrum appears during muscle fatigue.  相似文献

We investigated the firing rate of motor units in the vastus lateralis muscle in five healthy young men (mean = 21.4 yr, SD = 0.9) during a sequence of isometric constant-torque contractions repeated to exhaustion. The contractions were sustained at 20% of the maximal voluntary level, measured at the beginning of the test sequence. Electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded via quadrifilar fine-wire electrodes and subsequently decomposed into their constituent motor unit action potentials to obtain the motor unit firing times. In addition, we measured the whole muscle mechanical properties during the fatigue task using electrical stimulation. The firing rate of motor units first decreased within the first 10-20% of the endurance time of the contractions and then increased. The firing rate increase was accompanied by recruitment of additional motor units as the force output remained constant. The elicited twitch and tetanic torque responses first increased and then decreased. The two processes modulated in a complementary fashion at the same time. Our data suggest that, when the vastus lateralis muscle is activated to maintain a constant torque output, its motoneuron pool receives a net excitatory drive that first decreases to compensate for the short-lived potentiation of the muscle force twitch and then increases to compensate for the diminution of the force twitch. The underlying inverse relationship between the firing rate and the recruitment threshold that has been reported for nonfatigued contractions is maintained. We, therefore, conclude that the central nervous system control of vastus lateralis motor units remains invariant during fatigue in submaximal isometric isotonic contractions.  相似文献

Appropriate reliability is a necessary condition for the use of surface EMG for evaluation of hamstring muscle function in cases of knee joint pathologies or ligament injuries. The aim of the study was to investigate the test-retest reliability of power spectrum and amplitude of surface electromyographic (EMG) measurements of semitendinosus (ST) and biceps femoris (BF) during ramp isometric contractions. Eleven males performed maximum isometric contractions (MVC) of the knee flexors in two sessions, a week apart with simultaneous recording of surface EMG of the BF and ST. Intra class correlation (ICC) and standard error measurements (SEM) were applied to assess test-retest reliability of the averaged EMG (aEMG) and the median frequency (MF) over 10 levels of force, from 0% to 100% of the maximum. The ICC values ranged from 0.38 to 0.96 for the aEMG with SEM values reaching 11.37% of MVC. For the MF, the ICCs ranged from 0.44 to 0.98 (SEM range 4.49–18.19 Hz). In our set up, ramp contractions can be used to examine hamstring EMG patterns with acceptable reliability.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of patella taping in normal subjects. Previous work has established positive effects of patella taping on patellofemoral pain syndrome patients, but the mode of action remains unclear. It has been hypothesized that taping brings about subtle changes in the internal physiological environment of the joint. It could be expected that in normal joints taping would bring about a measurable change in function, as the joint is no longer operating in an optimal physiological environment. 10 normal female subject’s (21.4 ± 1.2 years) vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus laterialis (VL) EMG activity and knee kinematics (peak stance flexion angle and angular velocity) were assessed during a step descent, with and without a taped patella. The effect of taping was to significantly decrease VMO and VL EMG activity. Taping also significantly reduced peak stance phase knee flexion and peak stance phase knee flexion angular velocity. In normal asymptomatic subjects patella taping created a situation in which their performance was changed to one similar to that of the pathological patellofemoral pain syndrome population. It would appear that taping caused the joint to function sub-optimally supporting the hypothesis that taping could change the functioning of the patellofemoral joint.  相似文献

A method for measuring the maximal velocity of knee extension exercise is described using a very light lever arm. Instrumentation of the lever arm with a potentiometer and accelerometer also allows for the measurement of peak acceleration, time to peak acceleration, the average rate of development of acceleration (jerk) and peak torque. With this apparatus and surface electromyography, electromechanical delay (EMD) was also determined. This apparatus was tested using 17 female and 10 male subjects, and the measures obtained were related to the percentage of fast twitch fibres (% FT) and the relative area of fast twitch fibres (% FTA) in the vastus lateralis determined from duplicate muscle biopsy samples. Peak velocity of unloaded knee extension averaged 12.1 +/- 1.2 and 12.2 +/- 1.7 rad.s-1 for females and males, respectively, and were not significantly different. As well, peak acceleration, time to peak acceleration jerk and EMD values were not significantly different between the female and male subjects, but the mean peak torque for the female subjects (73.5 +/- 14.7 N.m) was significantly lower than that for the males (98.4 +/- 31.5 N.m). Peak acceleration was significantly correlated with %FT (r = 0.40, P = 0.04) for the total subject population. None of the other measures was significantly related to either %FT or %FTA for the male and female subjects or the combined population of subjects.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate EMG signal features during fatigue and recovery at three locations of the vastus medialis and lateralis muscles. Surface EMG signals were detected from 10 healthy male subjects with six 8-electrode arrays located at 10%, 20%, and 30% of the distance from the medial (for vastus medialis) and lateral (vastus lateralis) border of the patella to the anterior superior spine of the pelvic. Subjects performed contractions at 40% and 80% of the maximal force (MVC) until failure to maintain the target force, followed by 20 2-s contractions at the same force levels every minute for 20 min (recovery). Average rectified value, mean power spectral frequency, and muscle fiber conduction velocity were estimated from the EMG signals in 10 epochs from the beginning of the contraction to task failure (time to task failure, mean ± SD, 70.7 ± 25.8 s for 40% MVC; 27.4 ± 16.8 s for 80% MVC) and from the 20 2 s time intervals during recovery. During the fatiguing contraction, the trend over time of EMG average rectified value depended on location for both muscles (P < 0.05). After 20-min recovery, mean frequency and conduction velocity of both muscles were larger than in the beginning of the fatigue task (P < 0.05) (supernormal values). Moreover, the trend over time of mean frequency during recovery was affected by location and conduction velocity values depended on location for both muscles (P < 0.05). The results indicate spatial dependency of EMG variables during fatigue and recovery and thus the necessity of EMG spatial sampling for global muscle assessment.  相似文献

Continuous wavelet analyses was applied to investigate the spectral characteristics of m. vastus lateralis EMG activity in two incremental tests till exhaustion: rhythmic knee-joint extensions and cycling. Wavelet analysis of surface EMG revealed differences in the dynamics of time-frequency characteristics of the signal during single cycle of two types of movements with different loads, as well as differences in the slow variations of spectral characteristics associated with the development of muscle fatigue during the tests. It was shown that during cycling with low loads (beginning of the test) maximum of EMG activity was confined within the second half of muscle contraction (the angle in the knee joint approximately 140 degrees), increase of load at the end of the test led to a shift of the peak to the beginning of the active phase of movement, while the median frequency of the "instant" wavelet spectra during muscle contraction remained almost unchanged. During knee-joint extensions the maximum of EMG activity was observed at the end of the active phase of movement for all loads, median frequency increased significantly with increasing the angle at the knee joint. Long-term dynamics of EMG intensity growth during these tests differed as well, whereas dynamics of wavelet-spectra median frequencies were practically the same--during both tests their growths were observed.  相似文献

Conflictual results between the onset of vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) excitation may arise from methodological aspects related to the detection of surface electromyograms. In this study we used an array of surface electrodes to assess the effect of detection site, relative to the muscle innervation zone, on the difference between VM and VL excitation onsets. Ten healthy males performed moderate isometric knee extension at 40 % of their maximal voluntary isometric contraction. After the actual VM-VL onset was defined (estimated when action potentials were generated at the neuromuscular junctions of both muscles), we calculated the largest bias that the detection site may introduce in the VM-VL onset estimation. We also assessed whether the location often considered for positioning bipolar electrodes on each muscle leads to VM-VL onset estimations comparable to the actual VM-VL onset. Our main results revealed that a maximum absolute bias of 20.48 ms may be introduced in VM-VL onset estimations due to the electrodes’ detection site. In addition, mean differences of ∼ 12 ms in VM-VL onset estimations were attributable to largest possible discrepancies in the paired position of channels with respect to the innervation zone for VL and VM. When considering the classical location for positioning the bipolar electrodes over these muscles, differences error was subtle (∼3.4 ms) when compared with the actual VM-VL onset. Nonetheless, when accounting for the effect of relative differences in electrode position between muscles is not possible, our results suggest that a systematic absolute error of ∼ 12 ms should be considered in future studies regarding VM-VL onset estimations, suggesting that onset differences lower than that might not be clinically relevant.  相似文献

Studies have demonstrated that the electromyographic (EMG) amplitude versus submaximal isometric force relationship is relatively linear. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the minimum number of contractions required to study this relationship. Eighteen men (mean age = 23 years) performed isometric contractions of the leg extensors at 10–90% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in 10% increments while surface EMG signals were detected from the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis. Linear regression was used to determine the coefficient of determination, slope coefficient, and y-intercept for each muscle and force combination with successively higher levels included in the model (i.e., 10–30%,  10–90% MVC). For the slope coefficients, there was a main effect for force combination (P < .001). The pairwise comparisons showed there was no difference from 10–60% through 10–90% MVC. For the y-intercepts, there were main effects for both muscle (vastus lateralis [4.3 μV RMS] > vastus medialis [−3.7 μV RMS]; P = .034) and force combination (P < .001), with similar values shown from 10–50% through 10–90% MVC. The linearity of the absolute EMG amplitude versus isometric force relationship for the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis suggests that investigators may exclude high force contractions from their testing protocol.  相似文献

Muscle fibre profile area (Af), volume density (Vv), capillary-to-fibre ratio (CF) and number of capillaries per fibre square millimetre (CD) were determined from needle biopsies of vastus lateralis of twenty-four male volunteers (mean +/- SD: age 25.4+/-5.8 years, height 178.6+/-5.5 cm, body mass 72.1+/-7.7 kg) of different training background. Seven subjects were untrained students (group A), nine were national and sub-national level endurance athletes (group B) with the background of 7.8+/-2.9 years of specialised training, and eight subjects were sprint-power athletes (group C) with 12.8+/-8.7 years of specialised training. Muscle biopsies of vastus lateralis were analysed histochemically for mATPase. Capillaries were visualized and counted using CD31 antibodies against endothelial cells. There were significant differences in the Vv of type I and type II muscle fibres in both trained groups, B (51.8%; 25.6%) and C (50.5%; 26.4%). However, in untrained group A that was treated as a reference group, the difference between Vv of type I and type II fibres was less prominent, nevertheless statistically significant (42.1%; 35.1%). There was also a significant difference in CF: 1.9 in group A and 2.1 in groups B and C. The number of capillaries per mm2 (CD) was 245 (group A), 308 (group B) and 325 (group C). Significant differences (P<0.05) in CF and CD, were found only between group A (1.9; 245) and both groups of trained men, B and C (2.1; 308 and 325). However, endurance athletes (group B), such as long-distance runners, cyclists and cross country skiers, did not differ from the athletes representing short term, high power output sports (group C) such as ice hockey, karate, ski-jumping, volleyball, soccer and modern dance.  相似文献

Despite the common use of standardised methods analysing neuromuscular function during knee extension, there is a lack of test-retest reliability studies. Furthermore, for most of the investigated variables it is unknown which changes of values indicate an enhancement of performance. The aim of the present study was to investigate performance-dependent variations of muscle functions during isometric contraction of knee extensors and to examine test-retest reliability of their measurement methods. For test-retest reliability sports students completed three test sessions. Highly skilled athletes, sports students and untrained subjects were investigated to determine the performance-dependent variations. The following variables were analysed: maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), voluntary activation (VA), absolute muscle reaction time (AR), muscle endurance (ME), and EMG frequency analysis (MF) of m. vastus lateralis (VL), m. vastus medialis (VM) and m. rectus femoris (RF). RESULTS TEST-RETEST-RELIABILITY: A high reliability between session 1 vs. 2 and session 2 vs. 3 was shown for MVC (ICC=0.92 and .97), VA (0.92/0.95) and ME (0.87/0.95). ICC in AR (0.23) was low between the first and second session and moderate between the second and third session (0.74). MF of VL, VM and RF showed low ICC between sessions. PERFORMANCE DEPENDENT VARIATIONS: Significant differences in nearly all variables (except VA) were found between trained (athletes and sports students) and untrained subjects.  相似文献

Purpose: Due to the low osseous lead of the shoulder joint a large portion of the shoulder muscles, in addition to executing movements, deals with stabilising tasks. This requires a permanent readjustment of the intermuscular co-ordination of all involved muscles. The aim of the study was to verify the existence of gender dependent differences in intramuscular co-ordination patterns of shoulder muscles.

Method: Fifteen healthy men and nine healthy women, who executed 24 isometric exercises in sagittal, frontal and horizontal planes with a loading of 50% of their individual isometric maximum force, were investigated. In every plane, four angular positions were chosen and both opposite force directions were measured, respectively. SEMG was taken from 13 muscles of the shoulder and the upper arm. Due to inter-individual differences SEMG amplitudes were normalised. Results: Gender specific differences of functional intermuscular co-ordination patterns could be proven systematically. Women showed less activation of muscles acting in the main force direction. In addition, those muscles less necessary for the actual force production were more activated in women than in men.

Conclusions: Functionally comparable shoulder function showed a gender dependency in terms of functional intermuscular co-ordination.  相似文献

Values of maximal isometric strength of five muscle groups and associated factors including occupational status, life style and health were studied in three groups of men aged from 31 to 35, 51 to 55, and 71 to 75 years. The results indicated significant differences between the age groups in isometric handgrip, elbow flexion, knee extension, trunk extension and trunk flexion strength. In the youngest group, the manual workers tended to have higher strength values in all muscle groups than the lower and higher status white collar workers; whereas among the middle-aged and oldest men the manual workers tended to have the poorest performance. Good self-rated health and the intensity of physical exercise during leisure were positively associated with muscle strength in the youngest and middle-aged groups whereas in the oldest group the most important variable was home gymnastics. The multivariate structural equation models of isometric strength differed somewhat among the age groups and in these models the above-mentioned variables accounted for from 33% to 43% of the variance in isometric strength within the age groups. The results illustrated the most important factors associated with isometric strength in samples of men of different ages and also provided suggestions as to how these determinants might influence comparisons between different age groups in respect of muscle strength.  相似文献

Spectral EMG parameters are being used as an objective evaluation of low back rehabilitation programs. The reliability of these spectral parameters is important in determining the validity of this evaluation tool. Two groups of eight subjects, with no history of back pain, were measured: the first group every day for one week; the second group one day per week for four weeks. During each session, subjects performed a 30-second isometric fatiguing contraction of the back extensors at 60% MVC followed by a 60-second rest and a 10-second repeat contraction. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) did not demonstrate high reliability (ICC<0.6) for the rate of median power frequency (MedPF) change (Hz/s), the magnitude of the recovery (Hz) and differences between the dominant and the non-dominant sides within a subject. However, the initial MedPF (Hz) of the fatigue and repeat contractions demonstrated excellent reliability (ICC>0.8) with five or more repeated measures. The practical implication of this work is that the experimental condition must have sufficiently large changes in MedPF (signal)—at least larger than the variability inherent in the MedPF (noise)—to constitute a valid measure.  相似文献

Electromechanical delay (EMD) in isometric contractions of knee extensors evoked by voluntary, tendon reflex (TR) and electrical stimulation (ES) was investigated in 21 healthy young subjects. The subject performed voluntary knee extensions with maximum effort (maximal voluntary contraction, MVC), and at 30%, 60% and 80% MVC. Patellar tendon reflexes were evoked with the reflex hammer being dropped from 60°, 75° and 90° positions. In the percutaneous ES evoked contractions, single switches were triggered with pulses of duration 1.0 ms and of intensities 90, 120 and 150 V. Electromyograms of the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris muscles were recorded using surface electrodes. The isometric knee extension force was recorded using a load cell force transducer connected to the subject's lower leg. The major finding of this study was that EMD of the involuntary contractions [e.g. mean 22.1 (SEM 1.32) ms in TR 90°; mean 17.2 (SEM 0.62) ms in ES 150 V] was significantly shorter than that of the voluntary contractions [e.g. mean 38.7 (SEM 1.18) ms in MVC,P < 0.05]. The relationships between EMD, muscle contractile properties and muscle fibre conduction velocity were also investigated. Further study is needed to explain fully the EMD differences found between the voluntary and involuntary contractions.  相似文献
