Summary We describe the summer diets of four seabird species. Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), Little Auk (Alle alle), Black Guillemot (Cepphus grylle) and Brünnich's Guillemot (Uria lomvia) collected in sea-ice-covered waters near Svalbard. Birds collected in an area filled with young sea-ice, within the seasonal sea-ice zone, were compared with birds collected from the perennial sea-ice zone dominated by multiyear ice. Pelagic Crustacea and fish dominated the diet of birds feeding in young ice, while sympagic Crustacea and fish were most important in the diet of birds feeding in multiyear ice. Boreogadus saida was the most important fish food item. B. Saida was present in the ice in both areas, while sympagic Crustacea were lacking in the area filled with young ice. Important food items in young ice were B. saida (Black Guillemots and Kittiwakes), Cajanus sp. (Little Auks) and Pandalus borealis (Brünnich's Guillemot). B. saida (Black Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Brünnich's Guillemots), Gammarus wilkitzkii (Brünnich's Guillemot, Black Guillemot) and Apherusa glacialis (Little Auk) were most important in multiyear ice. In general, Black Guillemots and Kittiwakes fed on fish, whereas Brünnich's Guillemots fed on the larger, and Little Auks on the smaller, Crustacea. The importance of sympagic species in the diet of seabirds is thought to be closely related to the age and history of the ice in the feeding area.  相似文献

The knowledge of cryptic epifaunal groups in the Arctic is far from complete mostly due to logistic difficulties. Only recently, advances in sample collection using SCUBA diving techniques have enabled to explore delicate hydroid fauna from shallow waters. This study is the first attempt to examine the relationship between substrate property (such as size of rock, morphological characteristics of algal or bryozoan host) and hydroid community composition and diversity in the Arctic. Samples of substrates for hydroid attachment including rocks, algae, bryozoans and other hydrozoans were collected around the Svalbard. Examination revealed no substrate-specific species. The substrate property did not have a strong influence on hydroid community. Both species composition and richness were not related to colonized rock surface area and to morphological characteristic of algal host. Therefore, results indicate the opportunistic nature of hydroid fauna in terms of substrate preference. However, the presence or absence of hydroids depended on the surface area of rocky substrate. Hydroids were more often present on rocks of larger surface area. Erect hydroids and bryozoans were important attachment surface for stolonal hydroids.  相似文献

 Composition and distribution of megabenthic communities around Svalbard were investigated in June/July 1991 with 20 Agassiz trawl and 5 bottom trawl hauls in depths between 100 and 2100 m. About 370 species, ranging from sponges to fish, were identified in the catches. Species numbers per station ranged from 21 to 86. Brittle stars, such as Ophiacantha bidentata, Ophiura sarsi and Ophiocten sericeum, were most important in terms of constancy and relative abundance in the catches. Other prominent faunal elements were eunephthyid alcyonarians, bivalves, shrimps, sea stars and fish (Gadidae, Zoarcidae, Cottidae). Multivariate analyses of the species and environmental data sets showed that the spatial distribution of the megabenthos was characterized by a pronounced depth zonation: abyssal, bathyal, off-shore shelf and fjordic communities were discriminated. However, a gradient in sediment properties, especially the organic carbon content, seemed to superimpose on the bathymetric pattern. Both main factors are interpreted as proxies of the average food availability, which is, hence, suggested to have the strongest influence in structuring megabenthic communities off Svalbard. The axiom that zooplankton species exhibit upwards migration behaviour at night is challenged by recent findings. Such behaviour is not universal, may vary during ontogeny, and is occasionally reversed. Moreover, in some estuarine and coastal zooplankton species vertical migration rhythms are of tidal, not diel, periodicity. There is evidence for several species that vertical migrations are endogenously controlled, occurring in constant conditions in the laboratory, suggesting that they have arisen under considerable selection pressure. They appear to play a significant role in orientation and navigation of coastal and estuarine zooplankton, predicated on the selective advantage of closure of life cycles. Vertical migrations between water masses moving in different directions at tidal, diel or longer timescales permit dispersal and recruitment, or retention, of planktonic larvae and adults in favourable ecological locations. Exogenous factors serving as cues for, or directly controlling, vertical migration rhythms include light, hydrostatic pressure, salinity, temperature, water movements and gravity responses, besides biological factors such as the timing of larval release, duration of larval life and predator/prey interactions. Behavioural characteristics should be quantified and factored into dispersal models which assume that zooplankton adults and larvae are advected as passive particles.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the nocturnal peracarid zooplankton froma nearshore area of the Gulf of Maine were studied from January1978 through December 1980 as a requirement of an ecologicalmonitoring program for the Public Service Company of New Hampshire'sSeabrook Generating Stanon. Numerically dominant species includedthe mysids Michteimysis mixta and Neomysis americana. the amphipodsPontogeneia inermis, Themisto gaudichaudi and Monoculodes edwardsi.and the cumaceans Diastylis polita and Lamprops quadriplicata.A general seasonal cycle was documented with a more abundantand speciose assemblage during fall and winter than summer.Peak abundance occurred during spring months prior to emigrationof juvenile M.mixta from the study area. We investigated the distribution of mesozooplankton in waters north of Svalbard (north of 78°50′N) at 38 stations in August and September of 2002, 2003 and 2004. The zooplankton community was numerically dominated by copepods (58–98% of the total abundance). Zooplankton abundance ranged from 115 individuals m−3 at the northern most location to 12,296 individuals m−3 on the shelf. Cluster analysis revealed four different groups with distinct geographic integrity that were identified by variation in species densities rather than by variation in taxonomic composition. Water temperature and salinity differed significantly between the different cluster groups indicating that part of the observed variations in species distribution relate to differences in hydrography. Numerous significant regressions between zooplankton abundance at species level and hydrographical parameters suggest that variability in water masses has measurable effects on zooplankton distribution and species composition in the study area.  相似文献

Invertebrate zooplankton predators are generally less diverse in average species numbers in tropical than in temperate lakes and reservoirs. Predatory Copepoda which comprise the majority of limnetic predators are particularly low in species numbers in the tropics. Predatory Cladocera are confined to the North Temperate zone. Chaoborus appears to be cosmopolitan. Among Rotifera, only the cosmopolitan predator Asplanchna occurs in tropical waters while the other common limnetic carnivorous genus Ploesoma is restricted to higher latitudes. Hydracarina, and insects besides Chaoborus, are generally restricted to the littoral and appear to be more diverse in the tropics. Lakes Awasa and Zwai, Ethiopia, are almost devoid of predators in the limnetic, which is invaded by a littoral chydorid Alona diaphana. Low diversity of lake types and low production of tropical zooplankton could restrict predator diversity too. Very low diversity of invertebrate predators in the limnetic and higher diversity in the littoral may characterize tropical lakes in contrast to temperate lakes, which have more invertebrate predators in the limnetic and perhaps relatively less in the littoral. Tropical zooplankton in freshwaters, appears to be a very immature community. Hence opportunistic species can readily invade the limnetic and even dominate in isolated situations as has been shown for Alona davidi, Hydracarina and some other unconventional forms.  相似文献

Grazing of dominant zooplankton copepods (Calanoides acutus, and Metridia gerlachei), salps (Salpa thompsoni) and microzooplankton was determined during the austral summer of 1998/1999 at the seasonal ice zone of the Prydz Bay region. The objective was to measure the ingestion rates of zooplankton at the seasonal ice zone, so as to evaluate the importance of different groups of zooplankton in their grazing impact on phytoplankton standing stock and primary production. Grazing by copepods was low, and accounted for <1% of phytoplankton standing stocks and 3.8-12.5% of primary production for both species during this study; even the ingestion rates of individuals were at a high level compared with previous reports. S. thompsoni exhibited a relatively high grazing impact on primary production (72%) in the north of our investigation area. The highest grazing impact on phytoplankton was exerted by microzooplankton during this investigation, and accounted for 10-65% of the standing stock of phytoplankton and 34-100% of potential daily primary production. We concluded that microzooplankton was the dominant phytoplankton consumer in this study area. Salps also played an important role in control of phytoplankton where swarming occurred. The grazing of copepods had a relatively small effect on phytoplankton biomass development.  相似文献

Seasonal variation of human pathogens such as Vibrio Cholerae non-01 and Salmonella spp. in Fukuyama coastal waters and the role of zooplankton in their distribution were studies for a period of 1 year. Comparison of two established methods, viz., the elevated temperature method and the two-step enrichment method of enumerating V. cholerae, showed that the former is superior in the recoveries of V. cholerae non-01. Isolation of this pathogen on a wider range of salinities (0.4 to 32.5%) revealed that these organisms are apparently an autochthonous component of the aquatic environment. Temperature appears to be the most crucial element in governing the distribution of V. cholerae non-01. Among the 69 isolates serotyped, 22 different serovars were identified, while one isolate failed to react with any of the known Louisiana State University antisera tested. Zooplankton samples did not harbor more V. Cholerae non-01 than the water column did. Better isolation of an allochthonous pathogen, viz., Salmonella spp., was noticed from the water samples when swabs were employed. Of the 251 isolates serotyped, 18 serotypes with three variants of Salmonella spp. were identified. A high amount of nutrients in the water column increased the survival rate of these pathogens in saline waters as evidenced by a higher incidence of various serotypes in polluted Fukuyama port than in clean marine waters. Salmonella spp. association between V. cholerae non-01 of Salmonella spp. with zooplankton could be noticed as influencing their seasonal distribution.  相似文献

Larval fishes and zooplankton in a cyclonic eddy in Hawaiian waters   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A cold-core eddy occurred off the Kona coast of the island ofHawaii in July 1982. It remained in that area for {small tilde}70days, sufficient time for many reef fish species to completetheir planktonic larval phase. The deployment of eight currentdrogues in the eddy showed how entrainment of plankton fromthe reef and adjacent offshore waters can occur and that passivedrift can return drifters from the deep sea to shore. Larvalfishes may be swept past the island every 7–8 days ina weak eddy and 3.5–5 days in a strong eddy. Planktoncollections were made at night near the surface and at the samedepth as the current drogues. Zooplankton were most concentratedat the eddy center. Taxonomic analysis of the plankton showedthat the dominant animals were calanoid copepods, malacostracans,hyperud amphipods, gastropod and bivalve larvae and chaetognaths.The densities of zooplankton and larval fishes in the eddy werehigher than in the same area before the arrival of an eddy.Larval fishes were most abundant in the periphery and amongthese, midwater fish larvae (gonostomatids and myctophids) werethe most numerous. Other numerous fish larvae in the eddy includedscombrids, particularly Thunnus albacares. carangids and thereef fish, Abudefduf abdominalis is (Pomacentridae).  相似文献

The abundance and the biodiversity of summer zooplankton in the waters of the Drawa drainage (NW Poland) were studied, as was their relation to selected environmental conditions. The conditions upstream, especially in the outlets of lakes, did not affect the zooplankton communities downstream. This was also true of tributaries which had no influence on the shape of the zooplankton communities in the main river. The number of zooplankton in the outlets of eutrophic lakes was greater than in those of mesotrophic lakes. Increased vegetation cover significantly affected mainly the crustacean communities of zooplankton. Larger amounts of zooplankton were observed in rivers where the riparian zone was not covered with vegetation, but this difference was not significant. The hydrological conditions of the rivers and the Secchi depth visibility strongly impacted the composition of the zooplankton. The influence of abiotic factors was most pronounced on the abundance of cladocerans, and least pronounced on the abundance of rotifers.  相似文献

Aims: This study aims to investigate the ecology of coliphages, an important microbial pollution indicator. Specifically, our experiments address (i) the ability of environmental Escherichia coli (E. coli) to serve as hosts for coliphage replication, and (ii) the temporal and spatial distribution of coliphages in coastal waters. Methods and Results: Water samples from three locations in California’s Newport Bay watershed were tested for the presence of coliphages every 2 weeks for an entire year. A total of nine E. coli strains isolated from various sources served as hosts for coliphage detection. Coliphage occurrence was significantly different between freshwater, estuarine and coastal locations and correlated with water temperature, salinity and rainfall in the watershed. The coliphages isolated on the environmental hosts had a broad host‐range relative to the coliphages isolated on an E. coli strain from sewage and a US EPA recommended strain for coliphage detection. Conclusions: Coliphage occurrence was related to the temperature, rainfall and salinity within the bay. The adaptation to a broad host‐range may enable the proliferation of coliphages in the aquatic environment. Significance and Impact of the Study: Understanding the seasonal variation of phages is useful for establishing a background level of coliphage presence in coastal waters. The broad host‐range of coliphages isolated on the environmental E. coli host calls for investigation of coliphage replication in the aquatic environment.  相似文献

于2013年5月和11月在厦门近岸海域设置67个站位进行大型底栖动物定量调查,运用Brey(1990)经验公式对该海域的次级生产力进行估算。结果表明:该海域大型底栖动物年均总次级生产力P和P/B值分别为4.6±10.1 g AFDW·m-2·a-1和1.0±0.4a-1,软体动物和多毛类为该海域P值的主要贡献类群,秋季的P值略高于春季,同安湾的P值明显高于大嶝海域、九龙江口、厦门外海域和围头湾。相关性分析显示,该海域次级生产力与沉积物有机质含量以及水体底温呈显著相关,底质类型以及采砂、航道清淤、环境污染等人类活动干扰也是影响次级生产力分布的主要因素。  相似文献

Zooplankton assemblages and water quality were examined bi-weekly from 17 April to 19 October 1998 in 11 northeastern Lake Michigan coastal lakes of similar origin but varied in trophic status and limnological condition. All lakes were within or adjacent to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Michigan. Zooplankton (principally microcrustaceans and rotifers) from triplicate Wisconsin net (80 μm) vertical tows taken at each lake's deepest location were analyzed. Oxygen–temperature–pH–specific conductivity profiles and surface water quality were concurrently measured. Bray-Curtis similarity analysis showed small variations among sample replicates but large temporal differences. The potential use of zooplankton communities for environmental lake comparisons was evaluated by means of BIOENV (Primer 5.1) and principal component analyses. Zooplankton analyzed at the lowest identified taxonomic level yielded greatest sensitivity to limnological variation. Taxonomic and ecological aggregations of zooplankton data performed comparably, but less well than the finest taxonomic analysis. Secchi depth, chlorophyll a, and sulfate concentrations combined to give the best correlation with patterns of variation in the zooplankton data set. Principal component analysis of these variables revealed trophic status as the most influential major limnological gradient among the study lakes. Overall, zooplankton abundance was an excellent indicator of variation in trophic status.  相似文献

Mangrove swamps help control the tidal hydrodynamics of many tropical estuaries. They generate an asymmetry of the tidal currents in both the tidal creeks and the mangrove swamps. This results in self-scouring of the tidal channels. Mangrove land reclamation results in siltation of the channel. Mangrove swamps control the flushing rates of the estuaries through the lateral trapping effect. Lateral trapping leads to the aggregation of mangrove litter along slick lines. Evapotranspiration plays a role in the hot dry season by forming a salinity maximum zone which isolates the estuary from the coastal waters for several months of the year. In the absence of runoff, evapotranspiration in the hot dry season generates an inverse estuarine circulation which can trap high salinity mangrove water, and mangrove detritus, along the bottom of a mangrove creek. This bottom layer can become anaerobic. Groundwater flow appears to play a key role in the nutrient budget of mangrove creeks, exporting salt left behind by evapotranspiration, and inhibiting runoff after rainfall. Particulates and dissolved nutrients outwelled from mangrove swamps to coastal waters are retained in a coastal boundary layer. This coastal boundary layer water can be trapped along the shore for long periods if the coast is straight and mangrove-fringed and the coastal waters are shallow. Headlands inhibit coastal trapping because they enhance mixing. Nutrient-rich coastal boundary layer waters may be ejected offshore as tidal jets peeling off headlands and locally enriching offshore waters.  相似文献

Four new species of Kinorhynchs are described from the West Atlantic coast off Fort Pierce, Florida, USA. They are the following: Antygomonas gwenae n. sp., Echinoderes riceae n. sp., Echinoderes adrianovi n. sp. and Pycnophyes norenburgi n. sp. All species were collected at the same locality called “20 miles station.” Samples were processed for standard granulometric data, yielding an estimated average particle diameter of 250 μm. The diagnostic characters and the general morphology of the new species are discussed in depth as well as the diversity and distribution of Kinorhyncha in the area.  相似文献
