Based on cross-sectional data, we recently reported that, in contrast to the prevailing view, the rate of decline in maximal oxygen consumption (VO(2 max)) with age is greater in physically active compared with sedentary healthy women. We tested this hypothesis in men using a meta-analytic study of VO(2 max) values in the published literature. A total of 242 studies (538 subject groups and 13,828 subjects) met the inclusion criteria and were arbitrarily separated into sedentary (214 groups, 6,231 subjects), active (159 groups, 5,621 subjects), and endurance-trained (165 groups, 1,976 subjects) populations. Body fat percent increased with age in sedentary and active men (P < 0.001), whereas no change was observed in endurance-trained men. VO(2 max) was inversely and strongly related to age within each population (r = -0.80 to -0.88, all P < 0. 001) and was highest in endurance-trained and lowest in sedentary populations at any age. Absolute rates of decline in VO(2 max) with age were not different (P > 0.05) in sedentary (-4.0 ml. kg(-1). min(-1). decade(-1)), active (-4.0), and endurance-trained (-4.6) populations. Similarly, there were no group differences (P > 0.05) in the relative (%) rates of decline in VO(2 max) with advancing age (-8.7, -7.3, and -6.8%/decade, respectively). Maximal heart rate was inversely related to age within each population (r = -0.88 to -0.93, all P < 0.001), but the rate of age-related reduction was not different among the populations. There was a significant decline in running mileage and speed with advancing age in the endurance-trained men. The present cross-sectional meta-analytic findings do not support the hypothesis that the rate of decline in VO(2 max) with age is related to habitual aerobic exercise status in men.  相似文献

To determine the relation between habitual endurance exercise status and the age-associated decline in maximal aerobic capacity [i.e., maximal O(2) consumption (Vo(2 max))] in men, we performed a well-controlled cross-sectional laboratory study on 153 healthy men aged 20-75 yr: 64 sedentary and 89 endurance trained. Vo(2 max) (ml. kg(-1). min(-1)), measured by maximal treadmill exercise, was inversely related to age in the endurance-trained (r = -0.80) and sedentary (r = -0.74) men but was higher in the endurance-trained men at any age. The rate of decline in Vo(2 max) with age (ml. kg(-1). min(-1)) was greater (P < 0.001) in the endurance-trained than in the sedentary men. Whereas the relative rate of decline in Vo(2 max) (percent decrease per decade from baseline levels in young adulthood) was similar in the two groups, the absolute rate of decline in Vo(2 max) was -5.4 and -3.9 ml. kg(-1). min(-). decade(-1) in the endurance-trained and sedentary men, respectively. Vo(2 max) declined linearly across the age range in the sedentary men but was maintained in the endurance-trained men until approximately 50 yr of age. The accelerated decline in Vo(2 max) after 50 yr of age in the endurance-trained men was related to a decline in training volume (r = 0.46, P < 0.0001) and was associated with an increase in 10-km running time (r = -0.84, P < 0.0001). We conclude that the rate of decline in maximal aerobic capacity during middle and older age is greater in endurance-trained men than in their sedentary peers and is associated with a marked decline in O(2) pulse.  相似文献

Tanaka, Hirofumi, Christopher A. DeSouza, Pamela P. Jones,Edith T. Stevenson, Kevin P. Davy, and Douglas R. Seals. Greater rate of decline in maximal aerobic capacity with age in physically active vs. sedentary healthy women. J. Appl.Physiol. 83(6): 1947-1953, 1997.Using ameta-analytic approach, we recently reported that the rate of declinein maximal oxygen uptake(O2 max) with age inhealthy women is greatest in the most physically active and smallest inthe least active when expressed in milliliters per kilogram per minuteper decade. We tested this hypothesis prospectively underwell-controlled laboratory conditions by studying 156 healthy, nonobesewomen (age 20-75 yr): 84 endurance-trained runners (ET) and 72 sedentary subjects (S). ET were matched across the age range forage-adjusted 10-km running performance. Body mass was positivelyrelated with age in S but not in ET. Fat-free mass was not differentwith age in ET or S. Maximal respiratory exchange ratio and rating ofperceived exertion were similar across age in ET and S, suggestingequivalent voluntary maximal efforts. There was a significant butmodest decline in running mileage, frequency, and speed with advancingage in ET.O2 max(ml · kg1 · min1)was inversely related to age (P < 0.001) in ET (r = 0.82) and S(r = 0.71) and was higher atany age in ET. Consistent with our meta-analysic findings, the absolute rate of decline inO2 max was greater inET (5.7ml · kg1 · min1 · decade1)compared with S (3.2 ml · kg1 · min1 · decade1;P < 0.01), but the relative (%)rate of decline was similar (9.7 vs 9.1%/decade; notsignificant). The greater absolute rate of decline inO2 max in ET comparedwith S was not associated with a greater rate of decline in maximalheart rate (5.6 vs. 6.2beats · min1 · decade1),nor was it related to training factors. The present cross-sectional findings provide additional evidence that the absolute, but not therelative, rate of decline in maximal aerobic capacity with age may begreater in highly physically active women compared with theirsedentary healthy peers. This difference does not appear to be relatedto age-associated changes in maximal heart rate, bodycomposition, or training factors.

Fitzgerald, Margaret D., Hirofumi Tanaka, Zung V. Tran, andDouglas R. Seals. Age-related declines in maximal aerobic capacityin regularly exercising vs. sedentary women: a meta-analysis. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(1): 160-165, 1997.Our purpose was to determine the relationship between habitualaerobic exercise status and the rate of decline in maximal aerobiccapacity across the adult age range in women. A meta-analytic approachwas used in which mean maximal oxygen consumption(O2 max) values fromfemale subject groups (ages 18-89 yr) were obtained from thepublished literature. A total of 239 subject groups from 109 studiesinvolving 4,884 subjects met the inclusion criteria and werearbitrarily separated into sedentary (groups = 107; subjects = 2,256),active (groups = 69; subjects = 1,717), and endurance-trained (groups = 63; subjects = 911) populations.O2 max averaged 29.7 ± 7.8, 38.7 ± 9.2, and 52.0 ± 10.5 ml · kg1 · min1,respectively, and was inversely related to age within each population (r = 0.82 to 0.87, allP < 0.0001). The rate of decline inO2 max withincreasing subject group age was lowest in sedentary women (3.5ml · kg1 · min1· decade1), greater inactive women (4.4ml · kg1 · min1· decade1), andgreatest in endurance-trained women (6.2ml · kg1 · min1 · decade1)(all P < 0.001 vs. each other). Whenexpressed as percent decrease from mean levels at age ~25 yr, therates of decline inO2 max were similarin the three populations (10.0 to 10.9%/decade). Therewas no obvious relationship between aerobic exercise status and therate of decline in maximal heart rate with age. The results of thiscross-sectional study support the hypothesis that, in contrast to theprevailing view, the rate of decline in maximal aerobic capacity withage is greater, not smaller, in endurance-trained vs. sedentary women. The greater rate of decline inO2 max in endurance-trained populations may be related to their higher values asyoung adults (baseline effect) and/or to greater age-related reductions in exercise volume; however, it does not appear to berelated to a greater rate of decline in maximal heart rate with age.

The two most frequently occurring explanations for the existence and distribution of introns in the genes of different species are: (1) introns are remnants of the original genetic material. (2) Introns were introduced during evolution. We construct mathematical models corresponding to these two explanations, and calculate the probabilities that the intron distribution in genes from different species coding for actin, alpha-tubulin, triosephosphate isomerase and superoxide dismutase are described by these models. In both models, the branch lengths as well as the structure of the corresponding evolutionary tree is taken into account. Every branch in the evolutionary tree is assumed to have its own individual rate of loss of introns for the first model and rate of gain of introns for the second model. These rate constants are estimated from the actual number of introns. Using the rate constants we stimulate the intron evolution and calculate the probabilities that the actual intron arrangements are produced. The results for actin and alpha-tubulin, which are the two genes we have the most data for, favor the model corresponding conjecture (1), i.e. the idea that introns are old. This contradicts the results from an earlier attempt to model intron evolution where almost the same data was used (Dibb & Newman, 1989, EMBO J. 8, 2015-2021).  相似文献

On the basis of cross-sectional data, we previously reported that the absolute, but not the relative (%), rate of decline in maximal oxygen consumption (VO(2 max)) with age is greater in endurance-trained compared with healthy sedentary women. We tested this hypothesis by using a longitudinal approach. Eight sedentary (63 +/- 2 yr at follow-up) and 16 endurance-trained (57 +/- 2) women were reevaluated after a mean follow-up period of 7 yr. At baseline, VO(2 max) was ~70% higher in endurance-trained women (48.1 +/- 1.7 vs. 28.1 +/- 0.8 ml. kg(-1). min(-1). yr(-1)). At follow-up, body mass, fat-free mass, maximal respiratory exchange ratio, and maximal rating of perceived exertion were not different from baseline in either group. The absolute rate of decline in VO(2 max) was twice as great (P < 0.01) in the endurance-trained (-0.84 +/- 0.15 ml. kg(-1). min(-1). yr(-1)) vs. sedentary (-0.40 +/- 0.12 ml. kg(-1). min(-1). yr(-1)) group, but the relative rates of decline were not different (-1.8 +/- 0.3 vs. -1.5 +/- 0.4% per year). Differences in rates of decline in VO(2 max) were not related to changes in body mass or maximal heart rate. However, among endurance-trained women, the relative rate of decline in VO(2 max) was positively related to reductions in training volume (r = 0.63). Consistent with this, the age-related reduction in VO(2 max) in a subgroup of endurance-trained women who maintained or increased training volume was not different from that of sedentary women. These longitudinal data indicate that the greater decrease in maximal aerobic capacity with advancing age observed in middle-aged and older endurance-trained women in general compared with their sedentary peers is due to declines in habitual exercise in some endurance-trained women. Endurance-trained women who maintain or increase training volume demonstrated age-associated declines in maximal aerobic capacity not different from healthy sedentary women.  相似文献

Male intrasexual competition should favour increased male physical prowess. This should in turn result in greater aerobic capacity in males than in females (i.e. sexual dimorphism) and a correlation between sexual dimorphism in aerobic capacity and the strength of sexual selection among species. However, physiological scaling laws predict that aerobic capacity should be lower per unit body mass in larger than in smaller animals, potentially reducing or reversing the sex difference and its association with measures of sexual selection. We used measures of haematocrit and red blood cell (RBC) counts from 45 species of primates to test four predictions related to sexual selection and body mass: (i) on average, males should have higher aerobic capacity than females, (ii) aerobic capacity should be higher in adult than juvenile males, (iii) aerobic capacity should increase with increasing sexual selection, but also that (iv) measures of aerobic capacity should co‐vary negatively with body mass. For the first two predictions, we used a phylogenetic paired t‐test developed for this study. We found support for predictions (i) and (ii). For prediction (iii), however, we found a negative correlation between the degree of sexual selection and aerobic capacity, which was opposite to our prediction. Prediction (iv) was generally supported. We also investigated whether substrate use, basal metabolic rate and agility influenced physiological measures of oxygen transport, but we found only weak evidence for a correlation between RBC count and agility.  相似文献

We recently evaluated treadmill aerobic running capacity in 11 inbred strains of rats and found that isolated working left ventricular function correlated (r = 0.86) with aerobic running capacity. Among these 11 strains the Buffalo (BUF) hearts produced the lowest and the DA hearts the highest isolated cardiac output. The goal of this study was to investigate the components of cardiac function (i.e., coronary flow, heart rates, stroke volume, contractile dynamics, and cross-bridge cycling) to characterize further the BUF and DA inbred strains as potential models of contrasting myocardial performance. Cardiac performance was assessed using the Langendorff-Neely working heart preparation. Isolated DA hearts were superior (P < 0.05) to the BUF hearts for cardiac output (63%), stroke volume (60%), aortic +dP/dt (47%), and aortic -dP/dt (46%). The mean alpha/beta-myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform ratio for DA hearts was 21-fold higher relative to BUF hearts. At the steady-state mRNA level, DA hearts had a fivefold higher alpha/beta-ratio than the BUF hearts. The mean rate of ATP hydrolysis by MHCs was 64% greater in DA compared with BUF ventricles. These data demonstrate that the BUF and DA strains can serve as genetic models of contrasting low and high cardiac function.  相似文献

A multi-stage, repetitive lifting maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) test was developed to be used as an occupational research tool which would parallel standard ergometric VO2max testing procedures. The repetitive lifting VO2max test was administered to 18 men using an automatic repetitive lifting device. An intraclass reliability coefficient of 0.91 was obtained with data from repeated tests on seven subjects. Repetitive lifting VO2max test responses were compared to those for treadmill, cycle ergometer and arm crank ergometer. The mean +/- SD repetitive lifting VO2max of 3.20 +/- 0.42 l.min-1 was significantly (p less than 0.01) less than treadmill VO2max (delta = 0.92 l.min-1) and cycle ergometer VO2max (delta = 0.43 l.min-1) and significantly greater than arm crank ergometer VO2max (delta = 0.63 l.min-1). The correlation between repetitive lifting oxygen uptake and power output was r = 0.65. VO2max correlated highly among exercise modes, but maximum power output did not. The efficiency of repetitive lifting exercise was significantly greater than that for arm cranking and less than that for leg cycling. The repetitive lifting VO2max test has an important advantage over treadmill or cycle ergometer tests in the determination of relative repetitive lifting intensities. The individual curves of VO2 vs. power output established during the multi-stage lifting VO2max test can be used to accurately select work loads required to elicit given percentages of maximal oxygen uptake.  相似文献

Aim To test statistical models used to predict species distributions under different shapes of occurrence–environment relationship. We addressed three questions: (1) Is there a statistical technique that has a consistently higher predictive ability than others for all kinds of relationships? (2) How does species prevalence influence the relative performance of models? (3) When an automated stepwise selection procedure is used, does it improve predictive modelling, and are the relevant variables being selected? Location We used environmental data from a real landscape, the state of California, and simulated species distributions within this landscape. Methods Eighteen artificial species were generated, which varied in their occurrence response to the environmental gradients considered (random, linear, Gaussian, threshold or mixed), in the interaction of those factors (no interaction vs. multiplicative), and on their prevalence (50% vs. 5%). The landscape was then randomly sampled with a large (n = 2000) or small (n = 150) sample size, and the predictive ability of each statistical approach was assessed by comparing the true and predicted distributions using five different indexes of performance (area under the receiver‐operator characteristic curve, Kappa, correlation between true and predictive probability of occurrence, sensitivity and specificity). We compared generalized additive models (GAM) with and without flexible degrees of freedom, logistic regressions (general linear models, GLM) with and without variable selection, classification trees, and the genetic algorithm for rule‐set production (GARP). Results Species with threshold and mixed responses, additive environmental effects, and high prevalence generated better predictions than did other species for all statistical models. In general, GAM outperforms all other strategies, although differences with GLM are usually not significant. The two variable‐selection strategies presented here did not discriminate successfully between truly causal factors and correlated environmental variables. Main conclusions Based on our analyses, we recommend the use of GAM or GLM over classification trees or GARP, and the specification of any suspected interaction terms between predictors. An expert‐based variable selection procedure was preferable to the automated procedures used here. Finally, for low‐prevalence species, variability in model performance is both very high and sample‐dependent. This suggests that distribution models for species with low prevalence can be improved through targeted sampling.  相似文献
