Osmoderma eremita is a threatened scarab beetle living in the hollows of old deciduous trees and is regarded as an umbrella species of the beetle fauna associated with this habitat. Several methods like pitfall trapping and wood mould sampling have been used to monitor the occurrence of O. eremita, but these methods cannot be applied for trees with certain characteristics. Recently, (R)-(+)--decalactone was identified as a male-produced sex pheromone of the species. Here, we show that -decalactone can be detected in hollow trees by air sampling and that the presence of the compound is strongly correlated with the occurrence of living male beetles in the same trees. Air was sampled from tree cavities and extracts analysed using gas chromatography–and mass spectrometry. There was a 89% match between the detection of -decalactone in extracts and the occurrence of male O. eremita±2 days from the sampling event. In the absence of males, samples never contained -decalactone, and the presence of this compound in a tree cavity appears to be a good predictor of O. eremita occupancy. Air sampling can be a useful complement to other methods when trying to detect as many trees housing this beetle as possible, which is crucial when estimating populations sizes and developing conservation strategies for this species.  相似文献

Given the predicted expansion of cities throughout the world, understanding the effect of urbanization on bee fauna is a major issue for the conservation of bees. The aim of this study was to understand how urbanization affects wild bee assemblages along a gradient of impervious surfaces and to determine the influence of landscape composition and floral resource availability on these assemblages. We chose 12 sites with a proportion of impervious surfaces (soil covered by parking, roads, and buildings) ranging from 0.06% to 64.31% within a 500 m radius. We collected using pan trapping and estimated the landscape composition of the sites within a 500 m radius and the species richness of plant assemblages within a 200 m radius. We collected 1104 bees from 74 species. The proportion of impervious surfaces at the landscape scale had a negative effect on wild bee abundance and species richness, whereas local flower composition had no effect. Ground‐nesting bees were particularly sensitive to the urbanization gradient. This study provides new evidences of the impact of urbanization on bee assemblages and the proportion of impervious surfaces at the landscape scale emerged as a key factor that drives those assemblages.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of soil invertebrates is aggregated with high-density patches alternating with low-density zones. A high degree of spatio-temporal organization generally exists with identified patches of specific species assemblages, in which species coexist according to assembly rules related to competitive mechanisms for spatial and trophic resources occur. However, these issues have seldom been addressed. The spatio-temporal structure of a native earthworm community in a natural savanna and a grass–legume pasture in the Colombian “Llanos” was studied during a 2-year-period. A spatially explicit sampling design (regular grid) was used to discern the distribution pattern of species assemblages in both systems. Earthworms were collected from small soil pits at three different sampling dates. Data collected from 1 m2 soil monoliths were also used in the present study. Data were analyzed with the partial triadic analysis (PTA) and correlograms, while niche overlap was computed with the Pianka index. The PTA and correlogram analysis revealed that earthworm communities displayed a similar stable spatial structure in both systems during the 2-year study period. An alternation of population patches where different species' assemblages dominated was common to all sampling dates. The medium-sized Andiodrilus sp. and Glossodrilus sp. exhibited a clear spatial opposition in natural savanna and the grass–legume pasture for the duration of the study. The Pianka index showed a high degree of niche overlapping in several dimensions (vertical distribution, seasonality of population density) between both species. The inclusion of space-time data analysis tools as the PTA and the use of classical ecological indices (Pianka) in soil ecology studies may improve our knowledge of earthworm assemblages' dynamics.  相似文献

Abstract I investigated the relationship between species richness and composition of ant faunas, and sampling intensity in two regions with different long‐term histories of grazing intensity in mulga (Acacia aneura) woodlands in northern New South Wales. There were two aims: (i) to examine the relationship between sampling intensity and species richness and composition; and (ii) to explore the differences in ant assemblages from two regions of markedly different grazing intensity when sampled at different intensities (i.e. when a higher proportion of the local ant fauna were collected). Ants were sampled in pit traps (120‐mm diameter) at densities of two, four, six and nine pits per 100 m2. Each sampling‐intensity treatment was replicated three times within each region. Pit traps filled with preservative were opened for 3 days. Species richness was higher with each successive increase in sampling intensity but was not different between regions for a given trapping intensity. There was no obvious asymptote of the curve relating trapping intensity to cumulative species richness suggesting that even greater trap densities than those used in the present study would be needed to collect most of the species of ants using a patch of ground over a few days. Spatial replication of a low‐intensity sampling design did not capture as many species as one higher‐intensity sampling array with the same total number of pit traps. This result can be explained by aggressive numerically dominant species of ants monopolizing access to a greater proportion of the traps in low‐density arrays. Ordination reveals that regions and sampling‐intensity treatments could be discriminated and that differences between regions with different grazing histories were less apparent with high‐intensity sampling arrays than they were with low‐intensity sampling arrays. This suggests that differences between locations in space (or potentially samples in time) could be exaggerated by incomplete sampling of the patch‐scale fauna. Comparison of the present study with other studies suggests that most studies to date have used sampling intensities that would not give a thorough assessment of the patch‐scale ground‐dwelling fauna if sampled only by pit traps. The implications of the results for programmes of ant monitoring in rangelands are discussed.  相似文献

The fish fauna and its relationships with physiography and climate were studied in northwestern Argentina from 21°30′ S to 26°30′ S and 63°30′ W to 65°50′ W, an area about 10,276 km2. Along a southeast–northwest gradient, the Chaco forest at low altitudes gives way to the Yungas cloud forest in highlands, and then, to an increasing desertic landscape, with xerophytic vegetation and scarce rainfall along the Grande River. Finally, extreme desert conditions prevail in the most northern part at the Puna plateau. Water chemistry was sampled from sites from 400 to over 3800 m a.s.l. In all 3278 fish specimens of 52 species were collected. Previous lists included 84 species. Only 19 were shared, meaning that 40 species are new for the area and/or particular localities, including 7 reports from Aguas Calientes. These results increase by one third the number of species in northwestern Argentina. The fish fauna was represented by eurytopic species of Paranensean genera as Astyanax, Bryconamericus and other characoids, mixed with locally distributed siluriforms. Under extreme climatic conditions, species of Trichomycterus predominate. Species assemblages show a combination of a large number of species typical of, sometimes endemic to or rather abundant in, the area, combined with a few species of Paranensean character. Fish assemblages were clearly defined by faunistic composition and distribution related with physiography and climate traits. A significant negative correlation is observed between both species number and abundance, and increasing altitude, and positive relationships exist with mean annual temperature and other climate traits. Diversity values (Shannon index) agree with the described pattern of increasing impoverishment of the fish fauna of northwestern Argentina, along gradients of increasing altitude and dryness and decreasing temperature.A first version of this paper was submitted at the XXVII Congress of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae, Dublin, Ireland, 1998.  相似文献

Crane flies (Limoniidae; Limoniinae) were sampled at national parks and protected areas across central to northern Thailand to observe patterns of species richness and faunal turnover in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. Prior to sampling, the crane fly fauna of this region was poorly known and no taxonomic keys existed for specimen identification. Utilizing a multi-access taxonomic key to the Limoniinae genera of the Oriental Region designed for this project, identification of collected specimens revealed a crane fly fauna displaying higher richness than inventories from temperate regions. Sixty-six morphospecies from 29 genera/subgenera were collected using a combination of light trapping and Malaise trapping. Richness estimators projected that a total of 70–81 species are to be collected with future sampling, with mountainous northern Thailand projected to have the highest richness. The faunas of Central and Northern Thailand were different, with the north generally composed of more temperate genera and the south composed of more tropical genera. The increased diversity in northern Thailand was significantly influenced by landscape topology. Sampling that spread across two mountain ranges displayed faunas that were divided into both high elevation (>1,000 m) and lower elevation (<1,000 m) faunas. This change in community assemblage across elevation illustrates faunas that were more alike at similar elevations between mountain ranges than they were within national parks.  相似文献

In order to evaluate single-occasion sampling in compiling inventories for Odonata, larvae were sampled on 20 occasions from 1987–1990 at a site on Middle Creek, north-eastern Victoria, and adults sought also on each visit to more fully evaluate the diversity of the asemblage, and limitations of depending on a single life stage for this purpose. A total of 18 species (7 Zygoptera, 11 Anisoptera) included 15 species collected as larvae and 16 as adults. Few species were common as larvae, and about half the 2806 specimens identified were Austrogomphus cornutus Watson. Orthetrum caledonicum (Brauer) and Ischnura heterosticta (Burmeister) were also abundant, and these three species were also the most common as adults. The number of species obtained ranged from 2–9 on different occasions, and represent different 'habitat groups' within the local fauna. The Middle Creek odonate fauna appears to be much richer than that of a nearby site on the Kiewa River (12 species), and reasons for this are discussed. Seasonal variation in species representation and relative abundances are noted. Any single sample occasion provided insufficient knowledge of the total assemblage to interpret odonate diversity reliably.  相似文献

Determine seasonal, annual, and decadal patterns of abundance in reptile species and assemblages occupying central Bold Park (~338 ha), an isolated urban bushland remnant in Perth, Southwestern Australia. Fenced pitfall trapping in four sampling sites, representing different habitats and fire history, over the primary reptile activity period for 35 consecutive years with over 17,000 individuals captured during 3300 days of sampling; the trapping regime was modified for the last 28 years. Sampling occurred in one of 35 global biodiversity hotspots that has a Mediterranean climate experiencing a 15% decline from the century average rainfall over the last 50 years. Twenty‐nine species were recorded, with 16 captured in 32 or more years and accounting for nearly 97% of all captures; the six most common for 81%. Three taxa became locally extinct. Activity predominates in warmer and dryer months (October to April), peaking in November–December. Species richness remained relatively constant between years with around 73% of known taxa captured annually. Assemblages did not change when analyzing the presence/absence data but moved through five statistically significant assemblages analyzing relative abundance data. Over the last 28 years, relative abundance was significantly and positively correlated with annual rainfall residuals, uniquely for the 4 years preceding annual sampling, resulting in significant changes in total assemblages and significantly similar patterns in four sample sites; the presence/absence data indicated only minor assemblage changes across sites. The number of species recorded annually remained relatively constant, but relative abundance illustrated significant temporal changes in assemblages over decades. The modeled relationship between relative abundance and annual rainfall residuals for 4 years preceding annual sampling is supported by known ecological responses and reptile demographics within this Mediterranean climate. Maintenance of urban biodiversity should consider impacts of a significantly drying climate exacerbating the extinction debt already inherent in isolated bushland populations experiencing limited immigration.  相似文献

The selection of one or more river substrata for the collection of benthic diatoms is fundamental to any monitoring or research programme because it can potentially bias the diatom data set. In the wet/dry tropics of Australia, where the use of benthic diatoms for river health assessment is in its infancy, the comparability of diatom assemblages on river substrata has been assessed. Benthic diatoms were sampled from seven river sites, with a range of ionic chemistries (conductivities 27–6500 μS cm−1) but low nutrient concentrations. At each site, triplicate samples were collected from 3 to 6 substrata. The diatom assemblages sampled were: epilithon (assemblages on rock), epiphytes on macroalgae and macrophytes, epidendron (assemblages on wood), epipsammon (assemblages on sand), epipelon (assemblages on mud) and bacterial slime. The variability between substrate assemblages, at each site, were assessed according to the following: (1) a multivariate analysis of diatom assemblages, (2) ANOVA tests of species richness, (3) ANOVA tests of the relative abundance of common species (defined by an abundance of at least 10% in any one sample), and (4) a comparison of the number of species unique to a substrate. A total of 198 taxa were identified, with some taxa common to temperate Australia. Common species were found on all substrata, with sometimes statistically significantly different relative abundances. Taxa unique to a substrate had low relative abundances (0.1–2%), were most often found on only one replicate, and are unlikely to be substrate specific because many are known to occur on other substrata. The assemblages on hard substrata, epilithon and epidendron, were found to be most similar. Diatom assemblages on macroalgal and macrophyte substrata, compared to other substrata, were highly variable. This is attributed to the loss of diatoms from grazing and sloughing, followed by recolonisation of newly exposed substrate. Other assemblages, notably epipsammon, were similar to epilithon and epidendron but sometimes differed in their relative abundance of common species. The principal finding of the study was the similarity of the epilithon and epidendron, which are considered to be indistinguishable. Rock and wood hard substrata can be substituted for one another during field surveys, thereby increasing the number of potential sample sites available for monitoring activities that standardise to a hard substrate.  相似文献

Live (i.e. rose Bengal stained) benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the 0–1 cm layer of multiple core samples were examined at three contrasting sites in the northeast Atlantic as part of the Natural Environment Research Council Deep Ocean Benthic Boundary Layer (BENBO) Thematic Programme. Sites A (3600 m water depth) and C (1900 m) were located in the Rockall Trough while Site B (1100 m) was in the Hatton–Rockall Basin. Wet-sorting sediment residues (>125 m fraction) revealed more abundant (98–190 individuals/10 cm2) and diverse (71–99 species /27 cm2) assemblages than found previously in studies employing dry-sorting techniques. At all three sites, the assemblages were numerically dominated by delicate soft-bodied and agglutinated species, most of which are undescribed. Calcareous taxa formed a relatively small proportion of the assemblages (23% of individuals at Site B, 13% at Site C and 7% at Site A). Conversely, the agglutinated hormosinaceans (mainly Reophax species) became more prominent with increasing depth and accounted for 8% of the assemblage at Site B, 33% at Site C and 51% at Site A. Foraminifera represented 67–81% of the fauna in the samples and greatly outnumbered the metazoans. The assemblage at Site A has similarities with abyssal assemblages, while those at Sites B and C contain characteristic bathyal species. At Site B, Uvigerina peregrina and Melonis barleeanum are abundant, suggesting that there are high organic carbon inputs at this site. Reduced species diversity was observed at Site A following the spring phytodetritus bloom due to the presence of large numbers of juvenile Hoeglundina elegans, although it is not clear whether this species is responding to phytodetritus inputs.  相似文献

The effects of immission load on spiders living on black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) were studied in a town in Western Hungary. In three sampling periods, trunk-trap catches of spiders from black pine trees planted in a control urban area were compared with those from black pines planted in an area with high immission load. In the first two sampling periods – when apart from the exclusive dwellers on or under bark of the black pine, foliage-dwelling spiders overwintering under the bark (facultative bark-dwellers) could also be trapped – the species richness and the Shannon diversity were significantly higher in the control area than in the area highly affected by immission. In these sampling periods, the composition of spider assemblages also significantly differed in the studied areas. In the third sampling period – when only the exclusive bark-dwellers could be trapped because facultative bark-dwelling spiders returned to the foliage after the overwintering – the species richness, Shannon diversity and the composition of spider assemblages were similar in the differently affected areas. Our results suggest that spiders living exclusively on or under the bark are not significantly influenced by immission load, while foliage-dwellers are sensitive to immission. Indicator species analysis also proved the clear classification of the responses of spiders to immission load. The probable direct and indirect effects of immission, causing differences in the species richness, diversity and the composition of spider assemblages, are also discussed.  相似文献

Common species of intertidal agglutinated benthic foraminifera in salt marshes in Massachusetts and Connecticut live predominantly at the marsh surface and in the topmost sediment (0–2.5 cm), but a considerable part of the fauna lives at depths of 2.5–15 cm. Few specimens are alive at depths of 15–25 cm, with rare individuals alive between 25–50 cm in the sediments. Specimens living between the sediment surface and 25 cm deep occur in all marsh settings, whereas specimens living deeper than 25 cm are restricted to cores from the lower and middle marsh, and have an irregular distribution-with-depth. Lower and middle marsh areas are bioturbated by metazoa, suggesting that living specimens reach these depths at least in part by bioturbation. High-marsh sediments in New England consist of very dense mats of Spartina patents or Distichlis spicata roots and are not bioturbated by metazoa. In this marsh region bioturbation by plant roots and vertical fluid motion may play a role in moving the foraminifera into the sediment. The depth-distribution of living specimens varies with species: living specimens of Trochammina inflata consistently occur at the deepest levels. This suggests that species have differential rates of survival in the sediment, possibly because of differential adaptation to severe dysoxia to anoxia, or because of differing food preferences. There is no simple correlation between depth-in-core and faunal diversity, absolute abundance, and species composition of the assemblages. It is therefore possible to derive a signal of faunal changes and thus the environmental changes that may have caused them from the complex faunal signal of fossil assemblages.  相似文献

1 Spiders (Araneae) were collected on and near downed woody material (DWM) in a Populus‐dominated forest to determine if spiders utilize wood surfaces, and to ascertain the importance of DWM habitat and wood elevation for spider assemblages. 2 Over 10 000 spiders representing 100 species were collected. Although more spiders were collected on the forest floor, spider diversity was higher in traps located on wood surfaces than on the forest floor, and 11 species were collected more frequently on wood surfaces. 3 Spiders utilized DWM at different stages in their development. Female Pardosa mackenziana (Keyserling) (Lycosidae) carrying egg sacs were caught most often on the surface of DWM, possibly to sun their egg sacs. Additionally, the proportion of immature spiders was higher on the wood surface than on the forest floor. 4 Spiders collected on logs with and without bark were compared to assemblages collected on telephone poles to assess what features of DWM habitat may be important. Web‐building species were seldom collected on telephone poles, suggesting that they depend on the greater habitat complexity provided by DWM. In contrast, hunting spiders did not distinguish between telephone poles and logs. 5 Fewer spiders and a less diverse fauna utilized elevated compared to ground‐level wood. Additionally, Detrended Correspondence Analysis revealed that the spider community from elevated wood was distinguishable from the spider community from ground‐level wood, and from the forest floor spider community.  相似文献

A survey of the benthic infauna (macro- and mesofauna) in tidalflats of Hinchinbrook Channel, north-east Australia, was carried out toassess the species diversity and individual abundances as well as theirtemporalvariations. Two sites were surveyed at five occassions from November 1988 toOctober 1991. In addition, spatial distributions over the intertidal gradientwere investigated once in May 1990. During the entire survey, over 200 specieswere recorded, with 53 species found on average at each sampling occassion.Species densities ranged from 4.0 to 8.2 species 177cm–2 for macrofauna and from 4.1 to 11.8 species10 cm–2 for mesofauna, but varied little betweensites. The average infaunal diversity (H') was 2.53. Individual abundancesreached median values of 14.0 individuals 177cm–2for macrofauna and 14.5 individuals 10 cm–2 formesofauna. Changes in total abundances were not related to season andinconsistent at the two study sites, with significantly higher abundancesoccurring either at site A or B on single sampling dates. Transects sampled inMay 1990 showed varying species compositions and abundances in the upper, midand lower intertidal, but no defined benthic communities were revealed bymultivariate analyses. Temporal variations in the benthic assemblages of thetwotidal flats in Hinchinbrook Channel were higher than variations between sites, with a separation of assemblages before and after 1989. Problems to assess andinterpret temporal changes in species rich tropical benthic communities arediscussed.  相似文献

DNA sequencing technologies continue to advance the biological sciences, expanding opportunities for genomic studies of non‐model organisms for basic and applied questions. Despite these opportunities, many next generation sequencing protocols have been developed assuming a substantial quantity of high molecular weight DNA (>100 ng), which can be difficult to obtain for many study systems. In particular, the ability to sequence field‐collected specimens that exhibit varying levels of DNA degradation remains largely unexplored. In this study we investigate the influence of five traditional insect capture and curation methods on Double‐Digest Restriction Enzyme Associated DNA (ddRAD) sequencing success for three wild bee species. We sequenced a total of 105 specimens (between 7–13 specimens per species and treatment). We additionally investigated how different DNA quality metrics (including pre‐sequence concentration and contamination) predicted downstream sequencing success, and also compared two DNA extraction methods. We report successful library preparation for all specimens, with all treatments and extraction methods producing enough highly reliable loci for population genetic analyses. Although results varied between species, we found that specimens collected by net sampling directly into 100% EtOH, or by passive trapping followed by 100% EtOH storage before pinning tended to produce higher quality ddRAD assemblies, likely as a result of rapid specimen desiccation. Surprisingly, we found that specimens preserved in propylene glycol during field sampling exhibited lower‐quality assemblies. We provide recommendations for each treatment, extraction method, and DNA quality assessment, and further encourage researchers to consider utilizing a wider variety of specimens for genomic analyses.  相似文献

The value of pitfall trapping was questioned in a recent review of methods for sampling Orthoptera in grassland ecosystems. However, subsequent to the publication of this review, interesting data has become available from pitfall trapping at Colne Point, an important coastal nature reserve in Essex, UK. As a result of this trapping, the nationally scarce and Essex Red Data List species, Platycleis albopunctata, was rediscovered in the county. This tettigoniid was believed to be extinct in Essex as previous visual searches for the insect at Colne Point had failed to locate it. Large numbers of the Essex Red Data List species, Myrmeleotettix maculatus, were also captured, as were specimens of the nationally scarce cockroach, Ectobius panzeri (Dictyoptera). Systematic pitfall trapping at Colne Point was therefore pivotal in recording scarce species such as P. albopunctata which had proved difficult to locate by visual searching methods.  相似文献

The effects of commercial forestry harvest and regeneration practices (clearfelling and slash-burning) on the lucanid fauna of the wet sclerophyll forests of southern Tasmania and the dry sclerophyll forests of eastern Tasmania were examined using pitfall catches. Lucanids are saproxylic beetles, dependent on dead, moribund and decaying wood. Samples taken from old-growth forest and from a chronosequence of sites regenerating after logging, in each forest type, were used to compare the species richness and abundance of the lucanid assemblages. In both forest types, species richness and abundance was highest in the youngest regeneration sites (1–3 year), reflecting the species richness of the original and adjacent unlogged forest, lowest in the older (20–25 year) sites, and variable in the old-growth sites. TWINSPAN cluster analysis showed no clear distinction between regeneration and old-growth forest. The post-harvest slash and stump residue provided an important refugium and initial habitat, but our research indicates that some species may not maintain populations in the long term. Our results suggest that most species of lucanids will find a continuous supply of suitable habitat only in old-growth forests; and such species may become less common as clearfell harvesting leads to a replacement of heterogeneous old-growth forest with single-aged monospecific stands. Continuity of supply of wood in all decay stages, the maintenance of sufficient source areas, and biological connectivity between old-growth stands to enable dispersal, are all likely to be essential to maintain lucanid beetle community integrity. If similar principles apply to other saproxylic species of invertebrate, then clearfelling and slash-burning may cause a gradual extinction of an important element of the forest biota.

We investigated macroinvertebrate abundance and functional feeding groups colonising experimentally-positioned woody substrates of different species in streams with three different riparian vegetation types. Native Eucalyptus forest formed a dense closed canopy over our streams; introduced (exotic, alien) pine plantation forest did not fully shade the streams, and grassland streams were completely open, although with woody riparian vegetation well upstream of our sites. Macroinvertebrate assemblages varied taxonomically and functionally with both wood species and riparian vegetation composition. Two specialist feeding groups responded clearly to riparian vegetation: wood gougers were most common in forested streams, and algal grazers in more open streams. Gougers colonised native Eucalyptus wood in preference to alien species. Other feeding groups responses showed complex interactions between vegetation and wood type. Our results indicate the importance of sampling appropriate substrates when assessing questions of this type – if seeking shifts in functional organisation, the substrates on which the feeding groups of interest occur must be sampled. The composition of the riparian strip may influence xylophilous communities as much as the structure (i.e. whether closed or open).  相似文献
