In order to determine more accurately the EEG markers of different types of attention (AT) of a healthy adult, 14 young healthy subjects (aged 18–30 years) were subjected to spectral coherent analysis of the electrical activity of the brain in the baseline state and during activation of different forms of AT (the orienting response to the sound tone and opening of the eyes, involuntary and voluntary visual AT). In the last two cases, specially developed computer-aided techniques were used. The quantitative differences in the states were assessed on the basis of nonparametric (the Mann-Whitney test) and parametric (Student’s t test) statistics. In three subjects, EEG and fMRI comparisons of the brain response to opening of the eyes were made. It was shown that the activation of different forms of AT in healthy subjects is accompanied by considerable diffuse nonspecific changes in the EEG spectral coherent characteristics (a decrease in the average spectral frequency and power, as well as in coherence) in combination with more local, more often oppositely directed shifts in the region of the cortical representation of the working analyzer. Complex systemic rearrangements of the brain activity involving all components of the activating system, as well as the specifics of different forms of AT connected with the rearrangement of activity between its divisions, are reflected in the diffuse changes of intercentral interaction. For example, marked reactivity of the symmetrical frontopolar (F p1-F p2) and the anterotemporal (F 7-F 8) cortical areas with unidirectional maximum shifts during voluntary AT is likely to reflect the responses of the frontothalamic component of the activating system. The reciprocity of the behavior of interhemispheric frontopolar and temporal relationships seems to be determined by the activity of its different components: frontothalamic and hippocampal. The local component of the EEG response to opening of the eyes in the form of increased α coherence in the occipital areas is coupled with increased oxygenation of blood in the cortical representation of the visual analyzer (the +BOLD effect of the fMRI response).  相似文献

This study is focused on changes in the brain function throughout the adulthood in healthy men and women performing task switching (TS) in the visual modality. One hundred and forty healthy subjects aged 20 to 65 years (69 men) participated in the experiments. In the fMRI study, the subjects performed a test that required switching attention between two objectives (classifying figures according to their form or number). Using the voxel-based morphometry (VBM), we calculated the volumes of gray and white matter in the whole brain and in selected areas. The results showed that a common feature of different age and sex groups performing the TS was bilateral activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal areas, the inferior parietal lobes and the inferior occipital gyrus. We also found a transition from local to diffuse activation occurring with age. In young men (20 to 30 years of age) compared to women, a greater increase in the BOLD signal was found in the prefrontal areas bilaterally, the right parietal lobe and insula, and, in addition, bilateral activation in the supplementary motor area which were not observed in women. Older men and women (51 to 65 years) had no significant differences. The study of the BOLD signal correlations with age in women at the age from 20 to 40 and men from 20 to 55 years showed no significant changes. With further increase of age in both groups we found a consequent increase in the number of brain areas which are activated. The VBM analysis showed a significant decrease in the volume of gray, but not white, matter with age. No significant correlations between age-related changes in the gray matter volume (both in the whole brain and in the specific areas) and BOLD signal in this age group were detected.  相似文献

Analysis of affective picture processing by means of EEG has invaded the literature. The methodology of event-related EEG coherence is one of the essential methods used to analyze functional connectivity. The aims of the present study are to find out the long range EEG connectivity changes in perception of different affective pictures and analyze gender differences in these long range connected networks. EEGs of 28 healthy subjects (14 female) were recorded at 32 locations. The participants passively viewed emotional pictures (IAPS, unpleasant, pleasant, neutral). The long-distance intra-hemispheric event-related coherence was analyzed for delta (1–3.5 Hz), theta (4–7.5 Hz), and alpha (8–13 Hz) frequency ranges for F3–T7, F4–T8, F3–TP7, F4–TP8, F3–P3, F4–P4, F3–O1, F4–O2, C3–O1, C4–O2 electrode pairs. Unpleasant pictures elicited significantly higher delta coherence values than neutral pictures (p < 0.05), over fronto-parietal, fronto-occipital, and centro-occipital electrode pairs. Furthermore, unpleasant pictures elicited higher theta coherence values than pleasant (p < 0.05) and neutral pictures (p < 0.05). The present study showed that female subjects had higher delta (p < 0.05) and theta (p < 0.05) coherence values than male subjects. This difference was observed more for emotional pictures than for neutral pictures. This study showed that the brain connectivity was higher during emotional pictures than neutral pictures. Females had higher connectivity between different parts of the brain than males during emotional processes. According to these results, we may comment that increased valence and arousal caused increased brain activity. It seems that not just single sources but functional networks were also activated during perception of emotional pictures.  相似文献

Screening alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients has been challenging due to the subjectivity involved in the process. Hence, robust and objective methods are needed to automate the screening of AUD patients. In this paper, a machine learning method is proposed that utilized resting-state electroencephalography (EEG)-derived features as input data to classify the AUD patients and healthy controls and to perform automatic screening of AUD patients. In this context, the EEG data were recorded during 5 min of eyes closed and 5 min of eyes open conditions. For this purpose, 30 AUD patients and 15 aged-matched healthy controls were recruited. After preprocessing the EEG data, EEG features such as inter-hemispheric coherences and spectral power for EEG delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma bands were computed involving 19 scalp locations. The selection of most discriminant features was performed with a rank-based feature selection method assigning a weight value to each feature according to a criterion, i.e., receiver operating characteristics curve. For example, a feature with large weight was considered more relevant to the target labels than a feature with less weight. Therefore, a reduced set of most discriminant features was identified and further be utilized during classification of AUD patients and healthy controls. As results, the inter-hemispheric coherences between the brain regions were found significantly different between the study groups and provided high classification efficiency (Accuracy = 80.8, sensitivity = 82.5, and specificity = 80, F-Measure = 0.78). In addition, the power computed in different EEG bands were found significant and provided an overall classification efficiency as (Accuracy = 86.6, sensitivity = 95, specificity = 82.5, and F-Measure = 0.88). Further, the integration of these EEG feature resulted into even higher results (Accuracy = 89.3 %, sensitivity = 88.5 %, specificity = 91 %, and F-Measure = 0.90). Based on the results, it is concluded that the EEG data (integration of the theta, beta, and gamma power and inter-hemispheric coherence) could be utilized as objective markers to screen the AUD patients and healthy controls.  相似文献

Examining the functional response of predators can provide insight into the role of predation in structuring prey populations and ecological communities. This study explored feeding behaviour and functional responses of planktivorous damselfishes when offered captive reared larvae of crown-of-thorns starfish, Acanthaster sp., with the aim of determining whether these predators could ever play a role in moderating outbreaks of Acanthaster sp. We examined predatory behaviour of 11 species of planktivorous damselfish, testing: (1) the relationship between predator size and predation rate, both within and among fish species; (2) consumption rates on larvae of Acanthaster sp. versus larvae of a common, co-occurring coral reef asteroid Linckia laevigata; (3) maximal feeding rates upon both Acanthaster sp. and L. laevigata; and (4) functional responses of planktivorous fishes to increasing densities of Acanthaster sp. Consumption rates of crown-of-thorns larvae by damselfishes were independent of predator size; however, there was a significant negative relationship between predator size and consumption rate of L. laevigata, when pooling across all predatory species. Some damselfishes, including Acanthochromis polyacanthus and Amblyglyphidodon curacao, consumed larval Acanthaster sp. at a greater rate than for L. laevigata. Most predatory species (all except A. curacao and Pomacentrus amboinensis) exhibited a Type II functional response whereby the increasing feeding rate decelerated with increasing prey density. In addition to revealing that a wide range of planktivorous fishes can prey upon larvae of Acanthaster sp., these data suggest that planktivorous damselfishes may have the capacity to buffer against population fluctuations of Acanthaster sp. Importantly, predators with Type II functional responses often contribute to stability of prey populations, though planktivorous fishes may be swamped by an abnormally high influx of larvae, potentially contributing to the characteristic population fluctuations of Acanthaster sp.  相似文献

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), is one of the most important aphid pests on pepper. Aphidius matricariae Haliday and Praon volucre (Haliday) are known as biological control agents for aphids in vegetable crops. In this research, age-specific functional responses of these two parasitoids were evaluated on different densities of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 green peach aphids. Type of functional response varied from type II to type III for different ages of A. matricariae, but type of functional response was not affected by female age for P. volucre. The functional response of P. volucre was determined as type II in the whole parasitoid lifetime. The searching efficiency (a), b, and handling time (T h ) were estimated using the Rogers equations. The highest searching efficiency (a) and lowest handling time were observed during the first half of lifetime of A. matricariae and P. volucre. Aphidius matricariae and P. volucre caused reasonable mortality of the green peach aphid by parasitism of 52.17 and 47.05 host aphids, respectively, in 24 h. Therefore, they are suggested as suitable candidates for control of M. persicae in pepper greenhouses.  相似文献

Changes in the main parameters of α-and β-adrenergic responses, sensitivity to agonists (EC 50) and maximum response (P m) of hindlimb and small intestinal blood pressure in situ and systemic blood pressure were studied in rabbits adapted to cold for 1–30 days (daily exposures to ?10°C for 6 h). The responses to phenylephrine, noradrenaline, adrenaline, clonidine (α-agonists), and isopropylnoradrenaline (β-agonist) corresponded to the equation p = (P m A n )/(EC 50 n + A n ) (1) with n = 1 and n = 2, respectively. Cold adaptation induced reciprocal changes in the response of both EC 50 and P m to α-agonists and in the response of P m alone to isopropylnoradrenaline. The significant differences of the parameters from control observed during the first 5 days of adaptation gradually decreased by day 30. After 10 days of adaptation, the efficiency (E = P m/2EC 50) of response to α-and β-agonists of adrenoceptors significantly increased.  相似文献

The plant SWEET family is a sugar transporter family that plays a significant role in plant development. Here, seven loquat SWEET family members were identified by RNA-seq. These were designated as EjSWEET1, EjSWEET2a, EjSWEET2b, EjSWEET2c, EjSWEET4, EjSWEET15, and EjSWEET17. Phylogenetic and predictive functional annotation analyses suggest that the loquat SWEETs are classified as having sucrose, glucose and fructose transportation features. The in vivo responses of loquat SWEETs to exogenous sugar or NaCl was investigated by applying high concentrations of sugar or salt to 7-month-old loquat seedlings cultured in a nutrient medium. The results showed that most loquat SWEET genes can respond to exogenous applications of sucrose, glucose, fructose and salt. The response of EjSWEET1 to exogenous fructose was faster than the others, indicating that EjSWEET1 is more sensitive to exogenous fructose compared with other loquat SWEETs. EjSWEET15 can be induced by sucrose, but is suppressed by glucose. This indicates its possible role in sucrose transporting. The response of loquat SWEETs to NaCl showed broadly similar patterns compared to sugars. However, after a longer time of NaCl treatment, most loquat SWEETs are upregulated, especially EjSWEET15. This indicates its long-term response to high salinity.  相似文献

Changes in the EEG depend on the style of accompanying music. Classical music produces more patterns with increased diagonal coherences in the γ frequency band, where two foci of integration are formed at points T 4 and T 6. During listening to rock music, a larger proportion of all changes occurred in the θ-and α1 frequency bands; an integration focus was formed at point T 6 in the α1 and γ frequency bands. An increase in diagonal coherences that was observed during the recognition was especially pronounced in the Δ-, θ-and α1 frequency bands. In addition, there was an increase in the coherence between the potentials recorded at points O 1-P 4 and O 2-F 7, and it was observed in all the frequency bands. During the recognition of masked visual images accompanied by classical or rock music, there were more patterns with an increased diagonal coherence of the currently dominant activity. Before erroneous recognition, a widely generalized increase in coherence over the brain cortex was observed in the Δ, θ, and α1 bands, which was an informative indicator of the subsequent erroneous recognition. In tests with recognition unaccompanied by music, as well as with music, the main change in symmetrical coherences was either a decrease in or an absence of changes in this indicator versus the background value.  相似文献

Background

Inducible defenses are a common and widespread form of phenotypic plasticity. A fundamental factor driving their evolution is an unpredictable and heterogeneous predation pressure. This heterogeneity is often used synonymously to quantitative changes in predation risk, depending on the abundance and impact of predators. However, differences in ‘modality’, that is, the qualitative aspect of natural selection caused by predators, can also cause heterogeneity. For instance, predators of the small planktonic crustacean Daphnia have been divided into two functional groups of predators: vertebrates and invertebrates. Predators of both groups are known to cause different defenses, yet predators of the same group are considered to cause similar responses. In our study we question that thought and address the issue of how multiple predators affect the expression and evolution of inducible defenses.

Results

We exposed D. barbata to chemical cues released by Triops cancriformis and Notonecta glauca, respectively. We found for the first time that two invertebrate predators induce different shapes of the same morphological defensive traits in Daphnia, rather than showing gradual or opposing reaction norms. Additionally, we investigated the adaptive value of those defenses in direct predation trials, pairing each morphotype (non-induced, Triops-induced, Notonecta-induced) against the other two and exposed them to one of the two predators. Interestingly, against Triops, both induced morphotypes offered equal protection. To explain this paradox we introduce a ‘concept of modality’ in multipredator regimes. Our concept categorizes two-predator-prey systems into three major groups (functionally equivalent, functionally inverse and functionally diverse). Furthermore, the concept includes optimal responses and costs of maladaptions of prey phenotypes in environments where both predators co-occur or where they alternate.

Conclusion

With D. barbata, we introduce a new multipredator-prey system with a wide array of morphological inducible defenses. Based on a ‘concept of modality’, we give possible explanations how evolution can favor specialized defenses over a general defense. Additionally, our concept not only helps to classify different multipredator-systems, but also stresses the significance of costs of phenotype-environment mismatching in addition to classic ‘costs of plasticity’. With that, we suggest that ‘modality’ matters as an important factor in understanding and explaining the evolution of inducible defenses.

Cytokinin response regulators (RRs) are important components of the two component signal systems, which are involved in the regulation of plant growth and development, and in the response to abiotic stress. In this study, 18 cytokinin RR genes were identified in Fragaria vesca through the genome-wide search. They were further classified into three types: type-A (FvRR17), type-B (FvRR814) and type-C (FvRR1518) according to the domain architecture and the phylogeny. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that most cytokinin response regulators of F. vesca and Arabidopsis formed clear orthologous pairs. Expression patterns of the cytokinin FvRR genes in various tissues and organs at reproductive stages were detected in this study. Additionally, gene expression response patterns to ABA and abiotic stresses including high temperature and osmotic stress were investigated. The results showed that different types of cytokinin FvRRs have different expression patterns, suggesting the functional differentiation of cytokinin FvRRs during the evolution. This systematic study provides insights into possible functions of the cytokinin FvRR genes and a basis for further functional analysis.  相似文献

Background

The objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive model of the electromechanical behavior of the rat ventricular myocyte to investigate the various factors influencing its contractile response.

Methods

Here, we couple a model of C a2 + dynamics described in our previous work, with a well-known model of contractile mechanics developed by Rice, Wang, Bers and de Tombe to develop a composite multiphysics model of excitation-contraction coupling. This comprehensive cell model is studied under voltage clamp (VC) conditions, since it allows to focus our study on the elaborate C a2 + signaling system that controls the contractile mechanism.

Results

We examine the role of various factors influencing cellular contractile response. In particular, direct factors such as the amount of activator C a2 + available to trigger contraction and the type of mechanical load applied (resulting in isosarcometric, isometric or unloaded contraction) are investigated. We also study the impact of temperature (22 to 38°C) on myofilament contractile response. The critical role of myofilament C a2 + sensitivity in modulating developed force is likewise studied, as is the indirect coupling of intracellular contractile mechanism with the plasma membrane via the N a+ /C a2 + exchanger (NCX). Finally, we demonstrate a key linear relationship between the rate of contraction and relaxation, which is shown here to be intrinsically coupled over the full range of physiological perturbations.

Conclusions

Extensive testing of the composite model elucidates the importance of various direct and indirect modulatory influences on cellular twitch response with wide agreement with measured data on all accounts. Thus, the model provides mechanistic insights into whole-cell responses to a wide variety of testing approaches used in studies of cardiac myofilament contractility that have appeared in the literature over the past several decades.

Climate change is posing a major challenge to coffee production worldwide leading to a need for the development of coffee cultivars with increased drought tolerance. In several plant species, the use of DREB genes in crop improvement has achieved promising results to desiccation tolerance engineering. Recent studies reported CcDREB1D specific patterns of expression in Coffea canephora and functional evidence of this gene involvement in drought stress responses. However, knowledge on natural diversity of this gene is largely unknown. In this context, this study aimed at evaluating the sequence variability of the DREB1D gene in several Coffea genotypes. Nucleotide variation in promoters and coding regions of this gene were evaluated in a population consisting of 38 genotypes of C. canephora, C. arabica and C. eugenioides, most of them characterized by different phenotypes (tolerance vs. susceptibility) in relation to drought. The genetic diversity of the loci revealed different haplotypes for the promoter and coding regions. In particular, our findings suggest association between drought tolerance and the genetic variations on DREB1D promoter regions, but not with those from its corresponding coding regions. Gene expression studies revealed up-regulated expression of DREB1D gene upon drought mainly in leaves of drought-tolerant clones of C. canephora, and in response to drought, high, and low temperatures in leaves of C. arabica, suggesting a key role of this gene in coffee responses to abiotic stress.  相似文献

The present study aimed to assess the possible relationship between psychometric and electroencephalographic (EEG) parameters in humans. Normalized parameters of the integrated spatial (p S ) and integrated temporal (p T ) regularities of real resting EEG with the eyes closed were calculated. The algorithm of estimation of these parameters was based on the calculation of empirical multivariate temporal structure function of the first order. It was revealed that p S and p T parameters varied in a specific range, which was characterized by well-defined individual configuration reflecting the variability type (spatial, temporal, or mixed) of resting EEG. Obtained p S and p T parameters were compared to the speed of performed cognitive activity. The cognitive tasks included nonverbal subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) including block design according to a given template and construction of an object without any template, and motor probe. The successful performance on cognitive tasks was detected to be achieved with different combinations of p S and p T parameters in different subjects. Thus, the same intelligence resource can probably be organized with nonlinear principle in different subjects.  相似文献

Atherosclerosis represents an inflammatory response to the disturbance of the endothelial layer in the arterial bloodstream. In the present study, an analysis of associations of polymorphic markers for the genes controlling synthesis of proteins involved in atherosclerosis pathogenesis in coronary atherosclerosis (CA) patients (217 subjects) and in a control group (250 subjects) was conducted. The following genes were examined: rs991804 (CCL2 gene), rs1126579 (CXCR2 gene), rs4074 (CXCL1 gene), rs4073 (CXCL8 gene), rs333 (CCR5 gene), rs2471859 (CXCR4 gene), rs1801157 (CXCL12 gene), and rs2569190 (CD14 gene). Using the Monte Carlo and Markov chain (APSampler) method, allele/genotype combinations associated with both low and high CA risk were revealed. The most important findings included the following: CXCR4*T/T + CCL2*C + CCR5*I/I (Pperm = 1 × 10–6, OR = 0.44, 95% CI 0.3–0.63), CXCR2*C + CD14*C + CXCL12*G + CCL2*C + CCR5*D (Pperm = 4 × 10–6, OR = 5.78, 95% CI 2.34–14.28), CD14*C + CCL2*C/C + CCR5*D (Pperm = 6.3 × 10–6, OR = 5.81, 95% CI 2.17–15.56), CXCL8*A + CXCR2*C + CD14*T + CXCR4*C (Pperm = 0.01, OR = 3.21, 95% CI 1.63–6.31).  相似文献
