Utilization of nutrients at different stages of development was examined for the xylophage,Homalodisca coagulata (Say). Survivorship and consumption rates of second-instar, fourth-instar and adult leafhoppers were measured daily on the hostsLagerstroemia indica L. andEuonymus japonica Thumb. Rates of consumption, assimilation efficiencies and daily assimilation of nitrogen, carbon, and individual organic compounds were calculated based on chemical analyses of xylem fluid and insect excreta. Gross growth efficiencies of diet utilization were also estimated by comparing biomass of young adults to estimates of nutrient utilization of the two host species. Different instars survived and utilized nutrients at varying rates on the two hosts. Second-instar leafhoppers survived at higher rates and utilized nitrogen more efficiently onE. japonica than onL. indica. However, assimilated nitrogen was much less as a result of lower consumption rates. In contrast, adults onL. indica had increased longevity, utilized carbon more efficiently, and assimilated higher quantities of both carbon and nitrogen than those onE. japonica. Efficiencies of nutrient utilization were high forH. coagulata compared to folivores or phloem feeders, particularly in the conversion of ingested nutrients to assimilated compounds. Variations in diet utilization during development are discussed in terms of polyphagy.  相似文献

How female caterpillars accumulate their nutrient reserves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Female Lepidoptera are often heavier than males. We examined the importance of consumption and post-ingestive processing as mechanisms for female Heliothis virescens larvae to meet the protein and carbohydrate requirements. In experiments in which caterpillars had a choice of diets, enabling them to select an appropriate protein and carbohydrate intake, females caterpillars ate more carbohydrate than males, but only on the heavily carbohydrate biased treatment. Overall, the sexes were not distinguished according to the selective feeding behavior, but females accumulated more protein and carbohydrate over the whole instar than the males did. Additionally, when given no choice, females ate more than males and accumulated more protein provided the diet contained a high proportion of protein. If they were reared on a high carbohydrate diet, there were no differences between the sexes. Our results indicate that female H. virescens larvae accumulate protein by regulating both intake and post-ingestive processing on high protein foods. In the field, late instar H. virescens feed on anthers, which are protein-rich and have the highest amino acid content relative to other cotton floral tissues.  相似文献

Apparent SDA was defined as the energy expenditure associated with the ingestion of a meal. In the present study apparent SDA was equated to an increase in oxygen consumption above the postabsorptive level subsequent to the ingestion of a meal. The energy cost for physically processing a meal, mechanical SDA, was equated to the oxygen uptake associated with the ingestion of non-digestible cellulose. The energy utilized by anabolic and catabolic processes associated with the ingestion of a standard diet was identified as biochemical SDA. Apparent, mechanical and biochemical SDA were each positively related to the energy intake of the standard diet. Apparent SDA expressed relatively to energy ingested equalled 10·5% and was independent of the caloric content of the meal. Mechanical SDA increased asymptotically with ingested meal size and energy content. Relative to apparent SDA, mechanical SDA decreased with meal size, suggestive of an enhancement in efficiency. Biochemical SDA rose exponentially with increase in ingested energy, reflective of the cost for growth and catabolism.  相似文献

1. Various formulations of the nutrient stress hypothesis predict that insect herbivore populations will respond positively to increased nutrient quality of host plants, especially dietary nitrogen. Survival and reproduction by adult females of two grasshopper species [Acrididae;Melanoplus sanguinipes (Fabricius) and Phoetaliotes nebrascensis (Thomas)] were evaluated in response to defined diets that varied factorially in both total nitrogen (1–7%) and total soluble carbohydrate (4.3–26.7%). These grasshopper species coexist naturally but are typically shifted phenologically so that specific developmental stages normally encounter host plants of different nutritional quality under natural conditions. 2. Demographic responses by adult females of both species varied according to diet quality, but not in the same fashion. Diet quality affected survival significantly in P. nebrascensis but not in M. sanguinipes. Survival in P. nebrascensis was greatest on diets containing the lowest nitrogen concentrations; carbohydrate level had no effect. 3. Diet quality influenced reproduction significantly in both species. Egg production rate (eggs/day) in M. sanguinipes exhibited a negative linear response to increased carbohydrate, coupled with a significant quadratic response to nitrogen that reached a maximum at an intermediate level of about 4% total N. A significant quadratic response to total N for pod production rate (indicating the timing of reproduction) was also observed. Clutch size in M. sanguinipes exhibited a negative relationship with total carbohydrate in the diet, but no response to nitrogen. No interaction was observed between nitrogen and carbohydrate levels. For P. nebrascensis, response to diet quality was much weaker, with only a suggestive maximum at 4% total-N for both egg production rate (eggs/day) and clutch size (eggs/pod) and a suggestive linear response for pod production rate as carbohydrate level increased. Female body weight did not contribute to any reproductive response as a covariate variable. 4. Combined with a similar, previous analysis of demographic responses by the grass-feeding grasshopper, Ageneotettix deorum, these results challenge the ability to draw generalizations about host plant nutritional quality and grasshopper demographic responses. These three grasshopper species respond quite differently to defined diets that vary in total nitrogen and carbohydrate levels. Thus, although host plant quality can contribute significantly to grasshopper population responses, a uniform explanation is not likely.  相似文献

Variations of cellular total lipid, total carbohydrate and total protein content of two dominant bloom-forming species (Skeletonema costatum and Prorocentrum donghaiense) isolated from the Yangtze River Estuary were examined under six different nutrient conditions in batch cultures. Daily samples were collected to estimate the cell growth, nutrient concentration and three biochemical compositions content during 7 days for S. costatum and the same sampling procedure was done every other day during 10 days for P. donghaiense. Results showed that for S. costatum, cellular total lipid content increased under phosphorus (P) limitation, but not for nitrogen (N) limitation; cellular carbohydrate were accumulated under both N and P limitation; cellular total protein content of low nutrient concentration treatments were significantly lower than that of high nutrient concentration treatments. For P. donghaiense, both cellular total lipid content and total carbohydrate content were greatly elevated as a result of N and P exhaustion, but cellular total protein content had no significant changes under nutrient limitation. In addition, the capability of accumulation of three biochemical constituents of P. donghaiense was much stronger than that of S. costatum. Pearson correlation showed that for both species, the biochemical composition of three constituents (lipid, carbohydrate and protein) had no significant relationship with extracellular N concentration, but had positive correlation with extracellular and intracellular P concentration. The capability of two species to accumulate cellular total lipid and carbohydrate under nutrient limitation may help them accommodate the fluctuating nutrient condition of the Yangtze River Estuary. The different responses of two species of cellular biochemical compositions content under different nutrient conditions may provide some evidence to explain the temporal characteristic of blooms caused by two species in the Yangtze River Estuary.  相似文献

The effects of macronutrient balance on nutrient intake and utilization were examined in Manduca sexta larvae parasitized by Cotesia congregata. Insects fed an artificial diet having constant total macronutrient, but with varied ratios of protein and carbohydrate, with altered diet consumption in response to excesses and deficiencies of the individual macronutrients. Bivariate plots of protein and carbohydrate consumption for non-parasitized larvae demonstrated a curvilinear relationship between points of nutrient intake for the various diets, and the larvae grew best on carbohydrate-biased diets. The relationship was linear for parasitized larvae with the growth uniform across diets. On protein-biased diets, the larvae regulated the nitrogen content, containing similar amounts of nitrogen regardless of consumption. Efficiency of nitrogen conversion in non-parasitized larvae was greatest on carbohydrate-biased diets, while nitrogen conversion by parasitized larvae was greatest with intermediate nutrient ratios. Accounting for carbohydrate consumption, the lipid content decreased as dietary carbohydrate increased, but parasitized larvae contained significantly less lipid. The total biomass of parasites developing in individual host larvae was positively correlated with host protein consumption, but the individual parasites were similar in size. Parasitism influences host nutrient consumption in a manner that achieves uniform host growth under diverse nutritional regimes, thereby constraining blood nutrient concentrations within limits suitable for parasite growth and development.  相似文献

The discovery of taste and nutrient receptors (chemosensors) in the gut has led to intensive research on their functions. Whereas oral sugar, fat, and umami taste receptors stimulate nutrient appetite, these and other chemosensors in the gut have been linked to digestive, metabolic, and satiating effects that influence nutrient utilization and inhibit appetite. Gut chemosensors may have an additional function as well: to provide positive feedback signals that condition food preferences and stimulate appetite. The postoral stimulatory actions of nutrients are documented by flavor preference conditioning and appetite stimulation produced by gastric and intestinal infusions of carbohydrate, fat, and protein. Recent findings suggest an upper intestinal site of action, although postabsorptive nutrient actions may contribute to flavor preference learning. The gut chemosensors that generate nutrient conditioning signals remain to be identified; some have been excluded, including sweet (T1R3) and fatty acid (CD36) sensors. The gut-brain signaling pathways (neural, hormonal) are incompletely understood, although vagal afferents are implicated in glutamate conditioning but not carbohydrate or fat conditioning. Brain dopamine reward systems are involved in postoral carbohydrate and fat conditioning but less is known about the reward systems mediating protein/glutamate conditioning. Continued research on the postoral stimulatory actions of nutrients may enhance our understanding of human food preference learning.  相似文献

Evidence is presented that the polyphagous arctiid Estigmene acrea is well adapted to sequester and specifically handle pyrrolizidine alkaloids of almost all known structural types representative of the major plant families with pyrrolizidine alkaloid-containing species, i.e. Asteraceae with the tribes Senecioneae and Eupatorieae, Boraginaceae, Fabaceae, Apocynaceae and Orchidaceae. The adaptation of E. acrea to pyrrolizidine alkaloids includes a number of specialized characters: (i) highly sensitive recognition of alkaloid sources by pyrrolizidine alkaloid-specific taste receptors; (ii) detoxification of pyrrolizidine alkaloids by N-oxidation catalyzed by a specific flavin-dependent monooxygenase; (iii) transfer and maintenance of all types of pyrrolizidine N-oxides through all developmental stages; (iv) conversion of the various structures into the male courtship pheromone hydroxydanaidal most probably through retronecine and insect specific retronecine esters (creatonotines) as common intermediates; (v) specific integration into mating behavior and defense strategies. Toxic otonecine derivatives, e.g. the senecionine analogue senkirkine, which often accompany the common retronecine derivatives and which cannot be detoxified by N-oxidation do not affect the development of E. acrea larvae. Senkirkine is not sequestered at all. Non-toxic 1,2-saturated platynecine derivatives that frequently occur together with toxic retronecine esters are sequestered and metabolized to hydroxydanaidal, indicating the ability of E. acrea to aromatize saturated pyrrolizidines. Although pyrrolizidine alkaloids, even if they are offered continuously at a high level (2%) in the larval diet, are non-toxic, E. acrea larvae are not able to develop exclusively on a pyrrolizidine alkaloid-containing plant like Crotalaria. Therefore, E. acrea appears to be specifically adapted to exploit pyrrolizidine alkaloid-containing plants as "drug source" but not as a food source.  相似文献

The spring flush of growth and the utilization of reserve materials in this growth was studied in lilac plants 0, 2, 4 and 6 weeks after bud break. The influence of nitrogen applied the previous season on the storage and utilization of carbohydrate and nitrogen reserves was determined. The plants were separated into buds, stems and roots and analyzed for changes in total available carbohydrates, sugars, hemi-celluloses, total nitrogen, basic and non-basic amino acids and organic acids. The bulk of the carbohydrate reserves occurred as soluble sugars in the roots, although the reserves of sugars and hemicellulose in the stem was important during the first two weeks after bud break. The bulk of the nitrogen reserves were stored as non-basic amino acids in the stems and roots. However, the roots of plants grown under high nitrogen levels contained twice us much total nitrogen as roots grown under low nitrogen. This additional nitrogen which was stored in the roots of high nitrogen plants was released as arginine. The dry weight of buds increased 3–10 fold during the initial two week period and during the next four weeks doubled again. This bud growth was correlated with the stored nitrogen reserves. The high nitrogen plants grew twice as much and utilized more of the reserve carbohydrates in spring growth than low nitrogen plants. Carbohydrates were synthesized in this new growth and the high nitrogen plants utilized this carbohydrate for additional growth while low nitrogen plants transported it to the stems and roots.  相似文献

Nutrient requirements by male and female insects are likely to differ, but relatively little is known regarding how sexes differ in their regulation of macronutrient acquisition. The present study reports the results from a laboratory experiment in which behavioural and physiological components of nutrient regulation were compared between male and female caterpillars of Spodoptera litura (Fabricius). When provided with choices between two nutritionally complementary foods (one is a protein-biased diet and the other a carbohydrate-biased diet), both males and females adjusted their food selection to defend an intake target. However, the composition of diet preferred by the two differed, with females selecting significantly more protein than males with no difference in carbohydrate intake between the two. When confined to single diets with varying mixtures of protein and carbohydrate [P:C ratios, expressed as the percentage of diet by dry mass: protein 42%:carbohydrate 0% (p42:c0), p35:c7, p28:c14, p21:c21, p14:c28, p7:c35], females consumed more macronutrients than did males across on all P:C diets except the extremely carbohydrate-biased diet (p7:c35). Under both choice and no-choice feeding condition, such sex differences in nutrient intake were not expressed until late in the feeding stage of the final stadium. Sexes also differed in post-ingestive utilization of ingested nutrients. Females utilized ingested protein for body growth with greater efficiency compared to males, presumably reflecting provisioning their adult needs for protein to develop eggs, whereas males were more efficient at depositing lipids from carbohydrate intake than females.  相似文献

Bowles, Jean A. (University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver), and William Segal. Kinetics of utilization of organic compounds in the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. J. Bacteriol. 90:157-163. 1965.-To obtain a workable system for a study of the kinetics of nutrient utilization (based on specific quantitative assay) by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, several cultural refinements were introduced: the use of shake culture, a 40-fold increase in the size of inoculum, substitution of glutamate for asparagine as nitrogen source, and elimination of glucose from the medium with glycerol remaining as carbon source. These modifications resulted in reduction to a tenth of the lag phase of glycerol utilization (from 40 to 4 days), and in a greatly increased rate of growth. Both coordinate and sequential patterns of nutrient utilization were in evidence, except in the case of citrate, which was never utilized under a variety of conditions of culture. The coordinate pattern of glucose-glutamate and glucose-glycerol utilization would appear to rule out catabolite repression by glucose. However, elimination of glucose from the medium resulted in elimination of the 4-day lag period before glutamate utilization was initiated, leaving open to question the role of glucose in this system. Evidence is presented for the hypothesis that the sequential pattern of glutamate-glycerol utilization is a function of glutamate repression of glycerol oxidation in the growth of M. tuberculosis, although no diauxie effect is apparent. In a determination of which nutrient-utilization systems were regulated by induction, only in the case of glycerol was evidence obtained for an inducible system. The enzymatic mechanisms underlying these patterns of nutrient utilization are presently being investigated.  相似文献

We measured glutamine kinetics using L-[5-15N]glutamine and L-[ring-2H5]phenylalanine infusions in healthy subjects in the postabsorptive state and during ingestion of an amino acid mixture that included glutamine, alone or with additional glucose. Ingestion of the amino acid mixture increased arterial glutamine concentrations by approximately 20% (not by 30%; P < 0.05), irrespective of the presence or absence of glucose. Muscle free glutamine concentrations remained unchanged during ingestion of amino acids alone but decreased from 21.0 +/- 1.0 to 16.4 +/- 1.6 mmol/l (P < 0.05) during simultaneous ingestion of glucose due to a decrease in intramuscular release from protein breakdown and glutamine synthesis (0.82 +/- 0.10 vs. 0.59 +/- 0.06 micromol x 100 ml leg(-1) x min(-1); P < 0.05). In both protocols, muscle glutamine inward and outward transport and muscle glutamine utilization for protein synthesis increased during amino acid ingestion; leg glutamine net balance remained unchanged. In summary, ingestion of an amino acid mixture that includes glutamine increases glutamine availability and uptake by skeletal muscle in healthy subjects without causing an increase in the intramuscular free glutamine pool. Simultaneous ingestion of glucose diminishes the intramuscular glutamine concentration despite increased glutamine availability in the blood due to decreased glutamine production.  相似文献

Resource availability can influence the foraging strategy adopted by different ant species as they endeavor to meet nutrient demands of the colony. In tropical rain forests, environmental conditions including resource availability vary over a vertical gradient. Consequently, nitrogen is predicted to become more limiting than carbohydrates toward the canopy as food webs shift to become more reliant on plant-based resources. We used a “bait-choice” experiment in a tropical rain forest to examine differences in protein and carbohydrate use with height and determined whether there were differences in response between common (numerically dominant) and rare species. Additionally, we investigated the nutrient use at the species level. Using species co-occurrence analysis, we examined interspecific competition by testing the co-occurrence of ant species at the tree level. Over the 12 trees investigated, 124 morphospecies were identified with eight species comprising 90% of total ant abundance. Species richness and protein use increased with height of bait for all species pooled and for common species but not rare species. Correspondingly, relative carbohydrate use decreased with height. We found greater species richness of rare species on carbohydrate baits compared with protein baits. Ant species were randomly distributed among trees when all species were included in co-occurrence analysis. However, when only common species were considered, segregation between species was evident among trees providing evidence for the presence of ant mosaics. Our results suggest that nitrogen limitation in the canopy may not be true for the whole ant assemblage but rather for the few common species.  相似文献

The spring growth and the utilization of carbohydrate and nitrogen reserves in this growth was studied in Taxus media cv. Hicksii plants 0, 2, 4 and 6 weeks after the plants started growing in the spring. The effect of nitrogen applied the previous season on the storage and utilization of the carbohydrate and nitrogen reserves during spring growth was determined. The plants were separated into buds (all new growth), stems, needles (those produced the previous season) and roots and analyzed for changes in total nitrogen, basic and non-basic amino acids, total available carbohydrate, sugars, hemicelluloses, organic acids and chlorophyll. The bulk of the soluble nitrogen reserves were stored as arginine in the stems and old needles. With the onset of spring growth, arginine nitrogen was converted to other amino acids which accumulated in the new growth (buds). The roots, stems and needles of plants grown under high nitrogen levels always contained more total nitrogen than those grown under low nitrogen levels. The bulk of the carbohydrate reserves were stored as hemicelluloses. The plants grown under high nitrogen levels utilized the bulk of the carbohydrate reserves from the roots and smaller amounts from the stems and old needles, while plants grown under low nitrogen levels used only the reserves in the roots. In the low nitrogen plants, carbohydrates accumulated in the needles and stems. Both the carbohydrate and nitrogen reserves were important in the dry weight increase due to spring growth. However, the nitrogen reserves were the limiting factor and the high nitrogen plants grew twice as much, produced more chlorophyll, and utilized more nitrogen and carbohydrate reserve in spring growth than low nitrogen plants. The additional chlorophyll allowed the production of more carbohydrates and these additional carbohydrates were used in increased growth rates, while in the low nitrogen plants the carbohydrate produced was less and accumulated within the plant.  相似文献

Nutrient resorption from senescing leaves is a key mechanism of nutrient conservation for plants. The nutrient resorption efficiency is highly dependent on leaf nutrient status, species identity and soil nutrient availability. Nitrogen is a limiting nutrient in most ecosystems, it is widely reported that nitrogen resorption efficiency (NRE) was highly dependent on the soil nitrogen availability and vary with N deposition. The effects of nitrogen deposition on NRE and nitrogen concentration in green and senescing leaves have been well established for forests and grasslands; in contrast, little is known on how plants in shrublands respond to nitrogen deposition across the world. In this study, we conducted a two-year nitrogen addition manipulation experiment to explore the responses of nitrogen concentration in green and senescing leaves, and NRE of seven dominant species, namely, Vitex negundo, Wikstroemia chamaedaphne, Carex rigescens and Cleistogenes chinensis from the Vitex negundo community, and Spirea trilobata, Armeniaca sibirica, V. negundo, C. rigescens and Spodiopogon sibiricus from the Spirea trilobata community, to nitrogen deposition in two typical shrub communities of Mt. Dongling in northern China. Results showed that NRE varied remarkably among different life forms, which was lowest in shrubs, highest in grasses, and intermediate in forbs, implying that shrubs may be most capable of obtaining nitrogen from soil, grasses may conserve more nitrogen by absorption from senescing leaves, whereas forbs may adopt both mechanisms to compete for limited nitrogen supply from the habitats. As the N addition rate increases, N concentration in senescing leaves ([N]s) increased consistent from all species from both communities, that in green leaves ([N]g) increased for all species from the Vitex negundo community, while no significant responses were found for all species from the Spirea trilobata community; NRE decreased for all species except A. sibirica from the Vitex community and W. chamaedaphn from the Spirea community. Given the substantial interspecific variations in nutrient concentration, resorption and the potentially changing community composition, and the increased soil nutrient availability due to fertilization may indirectly impact nutrient cycling in this region.  相似文献

The nitrogen balance of Wistar rats aged 30-45 and 45-60 days fed either control or cafeteria diet has been determined by measuring the intake fecal and urinary excretion and nitrogen deposition in the body. The efficiency of extraction of dietary nitrogen was higher for cafeteria diet-fed rats, which showed a lower nitrogen excretion and higher body nitrogen accretion than controls. The accurate measurement of nitrogen intake, excretion and deposition showed a consistent proportion of nitrogen unaccounted for (10-26% of net intake) in the studied fractions, which proportion was higher in the youngest cafeteria diet-fed rats.

The effect of carbohydrate on arginine utilization by excised bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Tendergreen) leaves in the dark was studied by adding arginine to leaves differing in carbohydrate levels, and measuring the arginine content of the leaves at intervals. In nonstarved leaves, the arginine content decreased steadily after vacuum infiltration of 10 mm arginine and was essentially completely utilized by 36 hours after infiltration. In starved leaves, the arginine content did not decrease except for a brief period of about 4 hours after infiltration. The distribution of (14)C after adding (14)C-arginine to starved and nonstarved leaves indicated that the presence of carbohydrates in the leaves stimulates the utilization of arginine for protein synthesis and conversion to other amino acids, organic acids, and CO(2) (catabolism). Adding sucrose along with arginine to starved leaves stimulated this utilization of arginine for both protein synthesis and catabolism. This effect of sugar on catabolism is different than results of similar studies done previously with proline.Increasing the concentration of added arginine greatly increased arginine catabolism but had a relatively small effect on utilization of arginine for protein synthesis. This result is the same as similar results from adding different concentrations of proline to excised leaves.  相似文献

1. Fish can play an important role in coupling benthic and pelagic habitats by consuming benthic prey and providing essential nutrients to algae in dissolved form. However, little is known about the factors affecting the magnitude of this nutrient subsidy. 2. Using laboratory and mesocosm experiments we evaluated how varying ingestion rates of bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) affects fish excretion rates of both nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). During the 10‐week mesocosm experiment, we also evaluated how varying ingestion rates may affect plankton community dynamics, and nutrient flux between pelagic and benthic habitats. Lastly, bioenergetic/mass balance models were used to examine the nutrient stoichiometry of fish body composition and excretion products. 3. Under laboratory conditions, both N and P excretion rates increased with increased ingestion of benthic prey surrogates (earthworms). This effect was more pronounced for N than P. Furthermore, under the more realistic conditions of the mesocosm experiment ingestion rate had no significant effect on P excretion rate. 4. Increased fish ingestion rate in the mesocosm experiment increased total algal biomass and the flux of nutrients from the water column to sediments. Effects of variable ingestion were much stronger on periphyton biomass and algal sedimentation rates than on phytoplankton or zooplankton biomass or composition. 5. Fish body nutrient composition was greatly affected by ingestion rate. N content increased and P content decreased with ingestion rate. As a result, the N : P ratio of fish bodies also increased with ingestion rate. The N : P ratio of nutrients excreted by fish also increased with ingestion rate, counter to predictions of stoichiometric theory, which predicts that excreted N : P ratio is negatively correlated to body N : P. However, this finding can be explained by relaxing the assumption of constant nutrient assimilation rates, and our mass balance data suggest that assimilation rates vary indeed with ingestion rate. 6. Our study provides experimental evidence that translocation of benthic‐derived nutrients by fish can affect the flux of nutrients among habitats, while also suggesting that stoichiometry models need to better incorporate how variable ingestion rates affect nutrient assimilation and excretion rates.  相似文献

Concentrations of reactive oxygen species (ROS) increase during exercise secondary to increased oxygen uptake, xanthine oxidase activity, and immune system activation. Carbohydrate compared to placebo beverage ingestion is associated with an attenuated cortisol and catecholamine response. Catecholamines can undergo autooxidation to form ROS. We hypothesized that during intense exercise, ingestion of carbohydrate compared to placebo would diminish oxidative stress. Sixteen experienced marathoners ran on treadmills for 3 h at ∼70% VO

on two occasions while receiving carbohydrate or placebo beverages (1 l/h, double-blinded) in a randomized, counterbalanced order. Blood samples were collected before and immediately after exercise, snap frozen in liquid nitrogen, and stored at -80°C until analysis. Plasma samples were analyzed for F2-isoprostanes (FIP) and lipid hydroperoxides (ROOH) as measures for lipid peroxidation, ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) as a measure of plasma antioxidant potential and for cortisol. The pattern of change in cortisol was significantly different between carbohydrate and placebo conditions (P=0.024), with post-exercise levels higher in the placebo condition. Under both carbohydrate and placebo conditions, significant increases in FIP, ROOH, and FRAP were measured, but the pattern of increase was not different (FIP, interaction effect, P=0.472; ROOH, P=0.572; FRAP, P=0.668). Despite an attenuation in the cortisol response, carbohydrate compared to placebo ingestion does not counter the increase in oxidative stress or modulate plasma antioxidant potential in athletes running 3 h at 70% VO
