The effect of alloxan-induced diabetes on glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in sciatic nerve of mice has been studied. We have found, 7 days after alloxan treatment, a significant decrease in this enzymatic activity in the cytosol of sciatic nerve of diabetic mice, and moreover, that these changes remained unaltered up to 21 days after alloxan injection. No modification in the glutathione content of sciatic nerve of diabetic mice was observed throughout the experiment when compared with controls. The decrease in GSH-Px activity in this tissue shows a good correlation with the increase of blood glucose levels throughout the experiment. It is hypothesized whether a combination of mechanisms could be involved in this decrease of GSH-Px activity and if oxygen radicals might be the common mediators of these processes.  相似文献

Using diabetes mellitus as a model of oxidative damage, this study investigated whether subacute treatment (10 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneally for 14 days) with the compound piperine would protect against diabetes-induced oxidative stress in 30-day streptozotocin-induced diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats. Liver, kidney, brain, and heart were assayed for degree of lipid peroxidation, reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH and GSSG, respectively) content, and activities of the free-radical detoxifying enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase. Piperine treatment of normal rats enhanced hepatic GSSG concentration by 100% and decreased renal GSH concentration by 35% and renal glutathione reductase activity by 25% when compared to normal controls. All tissues from diabetic animals exhibited disturbances in antioxidant defense when compared with normal controls. Treatment with piperine reversed the diabetic effects on GSSG concentration in brain, on renal glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities, and on cardiac glutathione reductase activity and lipid peroxidation. Piperine treatment did not reverse the effects of diabetes on hepatic GSH concentrations, lipid peroxidation, or glutathione peroxidase or catalase activities; on renal superoxide dismutase activity; or on cardiac glutathione peroxidase or catalase activities. These data indicate that subacute treatment with piperine for 14 days is only partially effective as an antioxidant therapy in diabetes.  相似文献

To investigate the time-dependent effects of acrylamide (ACR) on the antioxidative status in rat nerve tissues, adult male Wistar rats were given ACR (40 mg/kg, i.p., 3 times/week) for 2, 4, 6 and 10 weeks, respectively. The time-dependent changes of the lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA) and antioxidative status (glutathione, GSH; glutathione peroxidase, GSH-Px; glutathione reductase, GR; superoxide dismutase, SOD and anti-reactive oxygen species, anti-ROS) in nerve tissues were investigated. The electrophysiology indices (nerve conduction velocity, NCV; compound action potential duration, CAPD; compound action potential amplitude, CAPA; compound action potential latency, CAPL) in the sciatic nerve were determined using BL-420E Biologic Function Determining System. The results showed that MDA levels increased significantly (< 0.05) in nerve tissues, while GSH levels markedly decreased (< 0.05) in a time-dependent manner. SOD activity (in the spinal cord and sciatic nerve) and GR activity (in the sciatic nerve) increased significantly after 4 weeks ACR treatment (< 0.01), but then decreased (< 0.05). The anti-ROS activity in the sciatic nerve was markedly decreased at the end of week 6 and 10 (< 0.01). The above indices changed most in the sciatic nerve. The levels of GSH, MDA and anti-ROS in rat sciatic nerve were in high correlation (< 0.05, |r| > 0.80) with the electrophysiology indices according to the exposure time. Thus, ACR-induced neurotoxicity may be associated with the enhancement of lipid peroxidation and reduction of the antioxidative capacity. Depletion of neural GSH level might be one of the primary events in ACR-induced neuropathy. Ying-Jian Zhu and Tao Zeng––These authors contributed equally to this work.  相似文献

To accurately know the time-dependent changes of the lipid peroxidation and antioxidative status for elucidating the mechanism of neuropathy induced by allyl chloride (AC), the malondialdehyde (MDA), anti-reactive oxygen species (anti-ROS), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were investigated in cerebrum, spinal cord and sciatic nerve of rats after 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 weeks of␣AC administration. AC was administrated to Wistar rats by gavage at a single dosage of 200 mg/kg/per dose (three times per week). Rats were sacrificed after 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 weeks of treatment, and cerebrum, spinal cord, sciatic nerves were dissected, homogenized and used for the determination of lipid peroxidation and antioxidative status. The results showed that MDA in cerebrum (112.4%) and sciatic nerve (113.1%) significantly increased (P < 0.05) on third week of AC treatment and at gait score of 2, and further changes of MDA were observed after 6, 9, 12 weeks and at gait score of 3, 4. While a decrease (P < 0.05) in the activities of GSH, CAT, GPx and SOD after 6, 9, 12 weeks intoxication and at gait score of 2, 3, 4 were observed in cerebrum, spinal cord and sciatic nerve. Anti-ROS activities also decreased in all three nerve tissues after 3, 6, 9, 12 weeks intoxication and at gait score of 2, 3, 4. Thus, AC intoxication was associated with elevation of lipid peroxidation and reduction of antioxidative status, and the time-dependent changes of these indexes in Wistar rats nerve tissues occurred. Sciatic nerve was the main target tissue and MDA was most sensitive among all indexes. The changes of lipid peroxidation and antioxidative status might be related to the degradation of nerve fiber and served as one of mechanisms of toxic neuropathy induced by AC.  相似文献

Chronic injury to sensory axons in the rat peripheral nerve induces pathophysiologic changes in the axolemma at the cut nerve end, which are reflected in spontaneous ectopic impulse discharge and hyperexcitability to a range of depolarizing stimuli. We asked whether sensory axons injured in the central nervous system (CNS) also respond in this way. Primary afferent axons were severed in the sciatic nerve and, alternatively, in the midcervical or upper lumbar dorsal column (DC). Measurements of abnormal discharge from myelinated afferents showed high levels of spontaneous activity generated at the nerve injury site, especially during the period 3-16 days postoperatively, but comparatively little activity generated at the DC lesion site at any postoperative time. There was a corresponding difference in ectopic hyperexcitability to mechanical and adrenergic stimulation, and to depolarization with topical K+. DC lesion sites were not made more excitable by concurrent transection of the sciatic nerve, or by placing an autologous graft of excised sciatic nerve tissue into the DC defect at the time of initial surgery. Transection sites on dorsal roots L4 and L5 yielded abnormal discharge similar to that of sciatic nerve neuromas, indicating that the relative silence of DC transection sites was related to the CNS environment and not to position with respect to the sensory cell body.  相似文献

This paper reports data on the effect of green tea on the lipid peroxidation products formation and parameters of antioxidative system of the liver, blood serum and central nervous tissue of healthy young rats drinking green tea for five weeks. The rats were permitted free access to solubilized extract of green tea. Bioactive ingredients of green tea extract caused in the liver an increase in the activity of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase and in the content of reduced glutathione as well as marked decrease in lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH), 4-hydroksynonenal (4-HNE) and malondialdehyde (MDA). The concentration of vitamin A increased by about 40%. Minor changes in the measured parameters were observed in the blood serum. GSH content increased slightly, whereas the index of the total antioxidant status increased significantly. In contrast, the lipid peroxidation products, particularly MDA was significantly diminished. In the central nervous tissue the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase decreased while the activity od glutathione reductase and catalase increased after drinking green tea. Moreover the level of LOOH, 4-HNE and MDA significantly decreased. The use of green tea extract appeared to be beneficial to rats in reducing lipid peroxidation products. These results support and substantiate traditional consumption of green tea as protection against lipid peroxidation in the liver, blood serum, and central nervous tissue.  相似文献

The antioxidant status of several tissues (liver, kidney, lung, brain, heart, muscle, stomach, and spleen) from heterozygous manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) mutant mice (Sod2-/+) was characterized. The activity of MnSOD was decreased (30 to 80%) in all tissues examined. The levels of mRNA coding for the major antioxidant enzymes (CuZnSOD, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) were not significantly altered in liver, kidney, heart, lung, or brain in the Sod2-/+ mice. The activities of the enzymes were not altered in any of these tissues, with the exception of a decrease in glutathione peroxidase activity in muscle in the Sod2-/+ mice compared to the Sod2+/+ mice. Thus, there was no up-regulation of the activities of the major antioxidant enzymes to compensate for the decrease in MnSOD activity. Reduced glutathione levels were 30 to 50% lower in the lung, brain, and muscle of the Sod2-/+ mice compared to the wild-type Sod2+/+ mice. In addition, the ratio of GSH/GSSG was decreased approximately 50% in Sod2-/+ muscle, indicating that the decrease in MnSOD activity in the Sod2-/+ mice results in some degree of oxidative stress in this tissue.  相似文献

The activities of peroxide-detoxifying enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalase were measured in the nervous system of neurological dysmyelinating mutants: quaking (Qk), shiverer (Shi), and trembler (Tr) mice. Cu/Zn-SOD activity was higher in the cerebellum of Qk and Shi mice (by 53% and 106%, respectively) in comparison with controls, but it was the same in the cerebellum of Tr mice and their corresponding controls. In contrast, there was no difference in the level of Cu/Zn-SOD activity in the cerebrum of Qk, Shi, and Tr mice and their respective controls. Mn-SOD activity was the same among all the mutants compared to control animals in both cerebrum and cerebellum. In Shi cerebellum, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities were slightly decreased (a 21.6% and a 13.2% diminution, respectively), whereas catalase activity in cerebrum and cerebellum was the same among mutants and control mice. In the sciatic nerve from Tr mice, all the enzymatic activities were enhanced: sixfold increase for total SOD, and 2.4-fold, 3.5-fold, and 1.8-fold increase for glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalase, respectively.  相似文献

The appearance of the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) during embryonic and postnatal development of the rat brain and spinal cord and in rat sciatic nerve during postnatal development was examined by the immunoblot technique. Cytoskeletal proteins were isolated from the central and peripheral nervous system and separated by SDS slab gel electrophoresis or two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Proteins from the acrylamide gels were transferred to nitrocellulose sheets which were treated with anti-bovine GFAP serum and GFAP was identified by the immunoblot technique. GFAP was present in the embryonic rat brain and spinal cord at 14 and 16 days of gestation respectively. The appearance of GFAP at this stage of neural development suggests that the synthesis of GFAP may be related to the proliferation of radial glial cells from which astrocytes are derived. It is also feasible that GFAP provides structural support for the radial glial cell processes analogous to its role in differentiated astrocytes. GFAP was found to be present in rat sciatic nerves at birth and at all subsequent stages of development. These results indicate that some cellular elements in the rat sciatic nerve, such as Schwann cells, are capable of synthesizing GFAP which is immunochemically indistinguishable from its counterpart in the central nervous system. Thus it appears that GFAP is present both in the central and peripheral nervous system of the rat when the glial cells synthesizing GFAP are still undergoing differentiation.  相似文献

Superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase activities in pigmented and unpigmented liver tissues of frog and albino rat, respectively, were studied. Our results show that pigmented tissue is lacking in manganese superoxide dismutase activity and that the main enzymatic activity utilized in the cytosol by pigmented cells to reduce the hydrogen peroxide to water is represented by catalase; on the contrary, for the same reaction, the cells of albino rat liver primarily utilize the glutathione peroxidase activity. Both a low glutathione peroxidase activity and a low glutathione reductase activity were found in pigmented tissue of frog liver when compared with unpigmented tissue of rat liver. In light of our results, we also report a hypothetical interrelationship between melanin and reduced glutathione: We believe that in pigmented cells the melanin could act as a reducing physiological agent replacing the glutathione in the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. This reducing action of melanin could cause a diminished need for GSH and therefore could provoke the low glutathione peroxidase and reductase activities in pigmented tissue.  相似文献

Taking into consideration the biological importance of interaction between antioxidant defense (AD) enzymes and sexual steroid hormones it was deemed important to compare our recent achievements in the field with the state of current knowledge. The main goal of the present review was to investigate the changes of AD enzyme activities: superoxide dismutases, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione reductase in the brain of female and male rats depending on progesterone and estradiol. These ovarian steroids produce their effects by acting on numerous target tissues and organs, such as the reproductive organs, bone tissue and cartilage, peripheral blood vessels and the central nervous system (CNS). We have chosen it as a new parameter that might represent an important indicator of the changes within the CNS, bearing in mind the biological importance of the enzymes of the AD system. Our experimental results indicate that the AD enzyme activities in the brain tissue of female and male rats show a certain dependence on the concentration of progesterone and estradiol. The present review suggests that the modulation of the oxidative and antioxidative capacity by sexual steroid hormones is mediated through antioxidant metabolizing enzymes.  相似文献

We investigated glutathione level, activities of selenium independent GSH peroxidase, selenium dependent GSH peroxidase, GSH S-transferase, GSH reductase and the rate of lipid peroxidation expressed as the level of malondialdehyde in liver tissues obtained from patients diagnosed with cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. GSH level was found to be lower in malignant tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues and it was higher in cancer than in cirrhotic tissue. Non-Se-GSH-Px activity was lower in cancer tissue compared with adjacent normal liver or cirrhotic tissue, while Se-GSH-Px activity in cancer was found to be similar to its activity in cirrhotic tissue and lower compared to control tissue. An increase in GST activity was observed in cirrhotic tissue compared with cancer tissue, whereas the GST activity in cancer was lower than in adjacent normal tissue. The activity of GSH-R was similar in cirrhotic and cancer tissues, but higher in cancer tissue compared to control liver tissue. An increased level of MDA was found in cancer tissue in comparison with control tissue, besides its level was higher in cancer tissue than in cirrhotic tissue. Our results show that the antioxidant system of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma is severely impaired. This is associated with changes of glutathione level and activities of GSH-dependent enzymes in liver tissue. GSH and enzymes cooperating with it are important factors in the process of liver diseases development.  相似文献

The sex-specific divergence of antioxidant pathways in fetal organs of opposite-sex twin is unknown and remains urgently in need of investigation. Such study faces many challenges, mainly the ethical impossibility of obtaining human fetal organs. Opposite-sex sheep twins represent a unique model for studying a sex dimorphism for antioxidant systems. The activity of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), SOD1, SOD2, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase (CAT), the content of total glutathione, reduced glutathione (GSH), and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were measured in brain, lung, liver, kidney, and skeletal muscles of female and male fetuses collected from sheep twin pregnancies at day 65 of gestation. Lipid peroxidation was assessed by measuring melondialdehyde (MDA) tissue content. Male brain has greater total SOD and SOD1 activities than female brain. Female liver has greater SOD2 activity than male liver. Male liver has greater GR activity than female liver. Male liver has higher total GSH and GSSG content than female liver. Male skeletal muscles have higher total GSH, GSH, and GSSG content than female skeletal muscles. Female brain and liver have higher MDA content than male brain and liver. This is the first report of a sex dimorphism for fetal organ antioxidative pathways. Brain, liver, and skeletal muscles of male and female fetuses display distinct antioxidant pathways. Such sexually dimorphic responses to early life oxidative stress might be involved in the sex-related difference in fetal development that may have a long-term effect on offspring. Our study urges researchers to take into consideration the importance of sex as a biologic variable in their investigations.  相似文献

This study was aimed to evaluate the oxidative damage, production of reactive oxygen species and the status of antioxidative defenses following cerebral GSH depletion induced by two classical depletors, diethylmaleate (DEM, 3 mmol/kg, i.p.) and phorone (PHO, 4 mmol/kg, i.p.). The treatment decreased (40-43%) brain glutathione levels at 2 h, followed by a partial recovery at 24 h. Cerebral glutathione depletion by these agents increased the levels of superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical at both the time intervals; however, hydrogen peroxide was high at 24 h only. It also produced a dramatic increase in the protein carbonyls at 2 h but not at 24h, without any significant effect on lipid peroxidation and conjugated diene levels. These rats showed a significantly lowered superoxide dismutase activity both at 2 h and 24 h of exposure, as compared to controls. Glutathione depletion enhanced catalase activity markedly at 2 h, followed by some recovery at 24 h. While Se-independent glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase activities were increased at both 2 and 24 h time intervals, Se-dependent GPx and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were induced at 2 h only. Glutathione depletion decreased ceruloplasmin and vitamin E levels significantly at 2 h. However, ascorbic acid remained unaffected. It may be concluded that an acute cerebral glutathione depletion generates higher levels of reactive oxygen species, which may be responsible for oxidative modification of proteins. Some of these changes appear to recover soon after an activation of a variety of cellular antioxidant defense mechanisms and glutathione restoration. It appears that central nervous system is highly vulnerable to oxidative damage following a moderate glutathione depletion that may result from certain diseases or xenobiotic exposures.  相似文献

The glutathione content and the activities of several enzymes in its metabolism, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, were assayed in uteri obtained from estrogen-treated rats and in R3230AC mammary adenocarcinomas obtained from ovariectomized, intact and estrogen-treated hosts. Normal mammary glands, obtained 10–12 days post-partum, were also examined for these parameters.A daily pharmacological dose of 0.4 μg of estradiol-17β induced a maximal increase in uterine weight and in reduced glutathione (GSH); higher doses of estrogen did not significantly increase either of these parameters. Levels of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were comparable in both estrogen-treated and untreated rats. The time course of the estrogen-induced uterotrophic response was associated with increases in glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase activities with the increased GSH level preceding the increase in uterine weight. Compared to neoplasms from intact or ovariectomized animals, tumors from estrogen-treated hosts exhibited significant decreases in levels of GSSG and GSH, as well as in glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activities, but demonstrated a significant elevation of γ-glutamyl transpeptidase activity. Normal glands from lactating rats had decreased GSH levels, lower activities of glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase, but elevated γ-glutamyl transpeptidase activity versus tumors from intact rats. Tumors from estrogen-treated rats more closely resembled mammary glands during lactation. The divergent growth responses elicited by estrogen in the uterus and mammary tumor are correlated with the observed changes in GSH levels and enzymes involved in glutathione metabolism.  相似文献

1. Changes in liver glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activities in relation to age and sex of rats were measured. Oxidation of GSH was correlated with glutathione peroxidase activity. 2. Glutathione reductase activity in foetal rat liver was about 65% of the adult value. It increased to a value slightly higher than the adult one at about 2-3 days, decreased until about 16 days and then rose after weaning to a maximum at about 31 days, finally reaching adult values at about 45 days old. 3. Weaning rats on to an artificial rat-milk diet prevented the rise in glutathione reductase activity associated with weaning on to the usual diet high in carbohydrate. 4. In male rats glutathione peroxidase activity in the liver increased steadily up to adult values. There were no differences between male and female rats until sexual maturity, when, in females, the activity increased abruptly to an adult value that was about 80% higher than that in males. 5. The rate of GSH oxidation in rat liver homogenates increased steadily from 3 days until maturity, when the rate of oxidation was about 50% higher in female than in male liver. 6. In the liver a positive correlation between glutathione peroxidase activity and GSH oxidation was found. 7. It is suggested that the coupled oxidation-reduction through glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase is important for determining the redox state of glutathione and of NADP, and also for controlling the degradation of hydroperoxides. 8. Changes in glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activities are discussed in relation to the redox state of glutathione and NADP and to their effects on the concentration of free CoA in rat liver and its possible action on ketogenesis and lipogenesis.  相似文献

The aim of this study was tracing of changes in the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), glutathione transferase (GSH S-Tr), aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT) and alanine aminotransferase (A1AT) in the brain as a result of diet enrichment with antioxidants: selenium (Se), vitamin E and vitamin B15 (pangamic acid). The experiment was carried out on Wistar rats with initial body weight 150 g. Following prolonged enrichment of diet with Se (0.1 ppm of sodium selenite), vitamin E (6 mg/100 g of diet) and vitamin B15 (2.5 mg/100 g of diet) the following results were obtained. The activity of GSHPx in brain microsomes was not changed after one year of vitamin E administration when it was measured against hydrogen hydroxide and against cumene hydrochloride; vitamin E administration increased the activity of GSH S-Tr in the cytoplasmic fraction of brain cells. Diet enrichment with selenium increased after 12 and 18 months the activity of GSHPx measured against both substrates, and GSH S-Tr activity increased considerably. Presence of vitamin B15 in diet reduced GSHPx activity after one-year or longer administration, after 18 months the activity of GSH S-Tr was reduced also. No changes were noted in the activity of AspAT and A1AT.  相似文献

Treatment with the antioxidant butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) or the azo dye Sudan III during two weeks led to changes in the brain enzymatic antioxidant defense of Syrian golden hamsters. BHA was able to induce liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) 2-fold but had no effect on the brain SOD activity, whereas SOD activity was reduced to 50% in brain and remained unchanged in liver with Sudan III. These two substances are known inducers of DT-diaphorase and in fact this enzymatic activity was induced 4- and 6-fold in liver with BHA and Sudan III, respectively. However, BHA promoted a significant 40% reduction, whereas no change was observed with Sudan III in brain DT-diaphorase activity. Glutathione(GSH)-related enzymatic activities were also assayed in brain and liver. No induction was observed with BHA or Sudan III for any of the activities tested in hamster brain: GSH S-transferase (GST), GSH peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) reductase (GR). Only 1.3- and 1. 4-fold increases of GST and GR activities were observed in liver and no change in any of these enzymatic activities in brain with BHA; a partial limitation of permeability to BHA of the blood-brain barrier may explain this results. Furthermore, Sudan III promoted reductions in all these GSH-related enzymatic activities in brain and liver. The possible explanations for these results are discussed.Deceased 4th November 1998  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate the effects of chronic toluene inhalation in high concentration on lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities and ultrastructural changes in the sciatic nerves of rats. Male Wistar albino rats (150–250 g) were divided in two experimental groups: the control and the toluene treated group (n=10 for each). Toluene treatment was performed by inhalation of 3000 ppm toluene, in a 8 h/day and 6 day/week order for 16 weeks. Blood and tissue samples were obtained for biochemical and histopathological investigation. The blood and sciatic nerves were assayed for toluene by gas chromatography. Toluene significantly increased blood and tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), and decreased tissue superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), but not tissue catalase (CAT) levels when compared with controls. Electron micrographs of sciatic nerve in the toluene group shows myelin destructions with onion-bulb and bubble form protrusion on the myelin sheath and axolemma border of myelinated axons. The area of injury on the myelin sheath were measured by Image-Pro Plus. Mean of the injury area were estimated 34% each myelin. These findings indicate that chronic toluene inhalation might be involved with free radical processes.  相似文献

During the first 5 months of 1985, 35 moose were obtained for necropsy at the National Veterinary Institute, Uppsala, Sweden. 17 (49 %) of these cases were found to be infected with Elaphostrongylus sp. The nematodes were found in the epidural space of the spinal cord and brain, around and in the sciatic nerves and in muscle fasciae. Predilection sites appeared to be near cauda equina and the fasciae of the thoracic, gracilis and sartorius muscles. Most of the infected animals were calves. Both sexes were equally represented. Pathological changes found were characterized by focal haemorrhages and oedema. The changes were present in the muscle fasciae and in the leptomeninges of the brain and spinal cord. Beside infiltrates of mainly lymphocytes and plasma cells, adult nematodes, larvae and eggs were observed. Cases with mild gliosis in the cerebrum and degenerative changes of peripheral nerve roots affecting the epi- and perineurium were also found. In one case the inflammatory changes reached the endoneurium of a sciatic nerve bundle and in another case into a ganglion. Inflammatory reactions against the parasite were mainly directed towards eggs. In loose connective tissue close to nerve tissue in the central nervous system larvae were found close to eggs and remains of eggs indicating that eggs may hatch at this site. This investigation shows that natural infections with Elaphostrongylus sp. occur in wild moose and may produce pathological changes in large peripheral nerves and in the central nervous system.  相似文献
