Recruitment rates, natal philopatry and the onset of breeding activity are documented for the first time for the order Caprimulgiformes. Of 171 Red‐necked Nightjars Caprimulgus ruficollis ringed as fledglings in southwestern Spain between 2008 and 2011, 31 (18%) were later recovered. Females tended to disperse slightly further (680 m) than males (570 m), and no individual from the study site or nearby locations was ever recovered outside the area where it hatched, suggesting high natal philopatry. Most males (94%) and females (73%) recruited into the breeding population in their first year of life, and only a few individuals were not recovered until their second (10%) or third (7%) year of life. In contrast to most long‐lived birds, nearly all (95.5%) Red‐necked Nightjars started to reproduce in their first potential breeding season.  相似文献

Age at first reproduction is an important determinant of individual variation in reproductive success in ungulates, but few studies have examined its relationship with later fitness‐related traits in males. We used a long‐term individual based study of a harvested moose population to quantify the individual reproductive performance and survival of males, as well as to examine the determinants of age at first reproduction and consequences of age at first reproduction on lifetime breeding success. The probability that a male successfully reproduced at the age of two was negatively related to the mean age of adult males in the population, but the relationship weakened with increasing population size. Large antlers and large body mass relative to other males in the population increased the number of calves sired at their first successful mating season. In addition, those that successfully reproduced as two year‐olds were more likely to sire calves the next year, making them more productive at a given age compared to those that first reproduced at the age of three or older. We emphasize the importance for males to start reproducing as soon as possible in a harvested population to gain lifetime fitness benefits, as surviving the hunt is a major determinant of reproductive success in this population. We found no costs of early reproduction in males, hence leading to high individual heterogeneity in male reproductive performance. The apparent lack of reproductive costs could partly be explained by the age distribution in the population, individual variation in early‐life body mass and antler size, and differences in probabilities of being hunted of successful and unsuccessful males.  相似文献

Age at first reproduction is an important component of lifehistory across taxa and can ultimately affect fitness. Becausegenetic interests of males and females over reproductive decisionscommonly differ, theory predicts that conflict may arise overthe temporal distribution of matings. To determine the potentialfor such sexual conflict, we studied the direct costs and benefitsassociated with mating at different times for females, usingseed beetles (Acanthoscelides obtectus) as a model system. Virginfemales were resistant to male mating attempts at a very earlyage but subsequently reduced their resistance. Although we foundno difference in life span or mortality rates between femalesmated early in life and those mated later, females that matedearly in life suffered a 12% reduction in lifetime fecundity.Thus, there are direct costs associated with mating early inlife for females. Yet, males mate even with newly hatched females.We suggest that these data indicate a potential for sexual conflictover the timing of first mating and that female resistance tomating, at least in part, may represent a female strategy aimedat delaying mating to a later time in life.  相似文献

Male–male contest behavior can contribute to spatial distributions of male pinnipeds during breeding seasons. To maximize breeding opportunities, the most competitive males would be expected to be surrounded by the highest numbers of reproductive-age females. As information regarding fine-scale spatial ecology of Weddell seals is lacking, we performed an exploratory study using kernel density analyses to evaluate age-specific habitat use of male Weddell seals in Erebus Bay, Antarctica. Additionally, we investigated the relationship between age and number of surrounding reproductive-age females using a competing set of regression models in a Bayesian framework that considered different functional forms of age while incorporating individual heterogeneity. As male adult Weddell seals aged, to at least 20 years, they were more likely to be found in areas associated with the greatest densities of reproductive-age females, but individual heterogeneity also influenced the number of reproductive-age female neighbors. The youngest males tended to haul out in offshore areas associated with better hunting, and older males tended to settle in more nearshore areas associated with more pup production. Our findings from this preliminary investigation indicate that male Weddell seal spatial behavior during the breeding season varies with age and individual and might be related to reproductive activity.  相似文献

Evolutionary theories of senescence suggest that aging evolves as a consequence of early reproduction imposing later viability costs, or as a consequence of weak selection against mutations that act late in life. In addition, highly social species that live in sites that are protected from extrinsic mortality due to predation should senesce at a slower rate than solitary species. Therefore, species that start reproducing late in life should senesce at a slower rate than species that start reproducing early. In addition, social species should senesce more slowly than solitary species. Here I investigate the rate of senescence using an extensive data set on longevity records under natural field conditions to test predictions about the evolution of senescence among 271 species of birds. Longevity records increased with sampling effort and body mass, but once these confounding variables were controlled statistically, there was a strongly positive relationship between relative longevity and relative adult survival rate. Relative longevity after controlling statistically for sampling effort, body mass and adult survival rate, increased with age at first reproduction, but not with degree of breeding sociality. These findings suggest that the evolution of senescence is related to timing of first reproduction, but that the evolution of breeding sociality has played a negligible role in the evolution of senescence.  相似文献

Survival patterns in a population of western gulls (Larus occidentalis)of known age of first breeding, a, indicate a cost of reproductionrelated to the age of initial breeding. Among both sexes, birdsthat commenced breeding at the earliest ages (3 years in malesand 4 years in females) had higher annual mortality than thosethat deferred breeding one or more years. In addition, females(but not males) evidenced a cumulative cost of reproduction:holding age constant, females with more annual breeding attemptsdemonstrated poorer survival. These patterns of -specific survivalwere statistically significant after controlling for interannualvariation in food availability and are not explained simplyby variation in the intrinsic quality of individuals. To assessthe effects of these sex-specific costs on fitness, we combinedthe observed survival patterns with data on prebreeding survivorshipand -specific reproductive success to estimate rates of populationgrowth and lifetime reproductive success for different agesat first reproduction. Males showed a clearly defined fitnessoptimum at = 4 years, which coincided with the modal for malesin the population. Females showed no clear optimum, except thatbreeding at age 4 was suboptimal, hence females benefited fromdeferring breeding to ages 5-7 years. Observed age of firstbreeding also showed no clear mode for females, with slightpeaks at ages 5 and 7. As a result, in both sexes, the fitnesssurface for corresponded well with observed frequencies of. The relationships between age and size at reproduction and lifetime reproductive output of male Japanese fluvial sculpin Cottus pollux were estimated by a mark-recapture study. Although all males were physiologically capable of breeding at age 2 years, age at first successful reproduction varied amongst individuals. Males with delayed reproduction had lower net reproductive rate than males that bred at age 2 years on average suggesting that age at first reproduction was a conditional strategy. Males that delayed reproduction were significantly smaller at age 1 and 2 years than males that bred at age 2 years. Despite no significant difference in body size of hatched yolk-sac larvae between the early and late phase of the breeding season, by May of the first year of life, progeny from nests in the early phase had hatched earlier and were larger than those from the nests in the late phase. The results suggested an important effect of timing of reproduction of parents on the growth and subsequent age at first reproduction of their progeny.  相似文献

Costs associated with reproduction are widely known to play a role in the evolution of reproductive tactics with consequences to population and eco‐evolutionary dynamics. Evaluating these costs as they pertain to species in the wild remains an important goal of evolutionary ecology. Individual heterogeneity, including differences in individual quality (i.e., among‐individual differences in traits associated with survival and reproduction) or state, and variation in environmental and social conditions can modulate the costs of reproduction; however, few studies have considered effects of these factors simultaneously. Taking advantage of a detailed, long‐term dataset for a population of feral horses (Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada), we address the question of how intrinsic (quality, age), environmental (winter severity, location), and social conditions (group size, composition, sex ratio, density) influence the costs of reproduction on subsequent reproduction. Individual quality was measured using a multivariate analysis on a combination of four static and dynamic traits expected to depict heterogeneity in individual performance. Female quality and age interacted with reproductive status of the previous year to determine current reproductive effort, while no effect of social or environmental covariates was found. High‐quality females showed higher probabilities of giving birth and weaning their foal regardless of their reproductive status the previous year, while those of lower quality showed lower probabilities of producing foals in successive years. Middle‐aged (prime) females had the highest probability of giving birth when they had not reproduced the year before, but no such relationship with age was found among females that had reproduced the previous year, indicating that prime‐aged females bear higher costs of reproduction. We show that individual quality and age were key factors modulating the costs of reproduction in a capital breeder but that environmental or social conditions were not, highlighting the importance of considering multiple factors when studying costs of reproduction.  相似文献

Individual variation in life-history trade-offs can be causedby differences in quality and age. We tested for individualvariation in parental investment in incubating tree swallows(Tacyhcineta bicolor) subjected to a feather-clipping manipulation.Individual quality influenced how females were affected by featherclipping; lower quality clipped females showed a greater reductionin incubation and a greater loss of body condition than higherquality clipped females compared with controls. Most importantly,responses during incubation influenced nestling traits; lowerquality clipped females, particularly those losing the mostbody mass, raised nestlings in the poorest condition. Therewas no difference in incubation patterns of control females,but older clipped females suffered self-maintenance costs andraised offspring in better condition. In contrast, younger clippedfemales passed costs on to offspring through lower egg temperaturesand reduced nestling condition while maintaining their own condition.Overall, we found a strong individual quality effect: at thepopulation level, there was a trade-off between investing inincubation and maintaining parental condition, but among individuals,there was a positive correlation between change in parentalcondition and offspring quality. Individual differences in parentalstrategy can be important causes of life-history variation,especially through subtle, but important, aspects of reproductionsuch as maintaining egg temperature during incubation.  相似文献

The survival cost of reproduction has been revealed in many free‐ranging vertebrates. However, recent studies on captive populations failed to detect this cost. Theoretically, this lack of survival/reproduction trade‐off is expected when resources are not limiting, but these studies may have failed to detect the cost, as they may not have fully accounted for potential confounding effects, in particular interindividual heterogeneity. Here, we investigated the effects of current and past reproductive effort on later survival in captive females of a small primate, the gray mouse lemur. Survival analyses showed no cost of reproduction in females; and the pattern was even in the opposite direction: the higher the reproductive effort, the higher the chances of survival until the next reproductive event. These conclusions hold even while accounting for interindividual heterogeneity. In agreement with aforementioned studies on captive vertebrates, these results remind us that reproduction is expected to be traded against body maintenance and the survival prospect only when resources are so limiting that they induce an allocation trade‐off. Thus, the cost of reproduction has a major extrinsic component driven by environmental conditions.  相似文献

1. Five populations of Peromyscus maniculatus borealis (Mearns) were live-trapped in the Kananaskis Valley, Alberta, throughout the breeding seasons of 1996 and 1997, to test the hypothesis that growth and maturation of young-of-the-year (YY) females are limited by dietary protein.
2. In 1996, two populations received a high protein (30%) food supplement, one received a high energy, but low protein (14%) food supplement and two others were unsupplemented. In 1997, three populations received the protein (30%) supplement and two served as controls.
3. In 1996, control populations had high nestling growth rates and many (43%) YY females bred. In 1997, nestling growth rates were lower in control populations and no YY females bred.
4. Supplementation of high protein food resulted in consistently high nestling growth rates in both 1996 and 1997, and a significantly higher proportion of YY females bred than controls in both years.
5. Supplementation of high energy, but low protein food had no effect on YY growth or maturation.
6. Neither protein nor energy supplementation had any effects on the number of litters conceived per season, litter success, litter size or sex ratio of litters born to over-wintered females.
7. We conclude that growth and maturation of YY female Peromyscus maniculatus in this area are limited by the availability of dietary protein.  相似文献

The argument that an optimal age at first reproduction evolveswhere the benefits of reproduction outweigh the costs impliesthat where conditions change, age at first reproduction shouldalso change. We studied six captive populations of fallow deer(Dama dama) that differed in the age structure of males, maledensity, and sex ratio. We examined responses of males to changesin competition by simulating the presence of additional malesby providing visual, olfactory, and auditory stimuli. Our resultssuggest that dominance rank was the most important factor indetermining the level of reproductive behaviors exhibited. Theparticipation in reproduction increased with dominance status,and this association held for males that are usually sociallyimmature (3-5 years old). Hence, age apart from dominance wasrelatively unimportant in affecting the reproductive behavior.Male density was positively correlated with the time spent walkingand standing The female-to-male ratio was positively relatedto male-female interactions, but negatively related to male-maleinteractions. In response to the simulations, males older than3 years increased the rate of reproductive behaviors, but youngermales did not change or decreased the rate. We conclude thatonly males up to 3 years of age refrained from reproductionunder competition by mature males. However, past 3 years ofage, investment in reproduction is a function of dominance ratherthan a function bf age. This implies that 4- and 5-year-oldmales do not seems to defer reproduction until socially maturebut that their participation is a correlate of the achievabledominance rank.  相似文献

In many insect species, the size and number of eggs decrease with maternal age. Thus, both the size and number of eggs must be considered to know the exact cost of reproduction with maternal age. The resource depletion hypothesis was examined in the bruchid beetle Callosobruchus chinensis. The hypothesis explains why the egg size decreases with maternal age based on the decline of the female's reproductive capacity. A decrease was found in reproductive effort (= egg size × the number of eggs) and the fitness component of offspring with maternal age. The effects of the female's nutritional status on the relationship between maternal age and the reproductive effort of females with and without food and water were also examined. The results indicate that the decrease in size and number of eggs with maternal age can be explained by the resource depletion hypothesis in C. chinensis.  相似文献

In a related paper, we showed that mares that reproduced early in life tended to have higher fecundity because of a decrease in the duration of inter-birth intervals relative to mares that reproduced later in life. However, we know that young mares are subordinate to older mares. Hence, costs associated with low dominance rank might offset the benefits of earlier reproduction. We compared harassment of foals of female Jeju ponies that first reproduced at three years of age with that of foals of females that first reproduced at five years of age. As a consequence of their positions in the linear dominance hierarchy, foals born to and guarded by young mares were harassed more frequently than foals whose mothers were older when they first reproduced. A mare that reproduced early in life guarded her offspring more closely and intervened between her foal and neighboring mares more frequently than those mares which first reproduced when older. This need to guard their foals and the harm that might ensue from frequent harassment might counter-balance selection towards earlier reproduction in mares.  相似文献

【目的】“圆屋顶形”假说认为,对单寄生性姬蜂和茧蜂适合度而言,中间龄期幼虫寄主的品质高于更早和更晚龄期幼虫。该假说得到许多研究支持,但这些研究常以寄主幼虫脱皮划分虫龄,很少观测生殖特征,从而难以确切和全面描述适合度随寄主生长发育变化而变化的关系。本研究旨在检验“圆屋顶形”假说。【方法】本研究以斜纹夜蛾Spodoptera litura不同日龄幼虫为寄主,观测斑痣悬茧蜂Meteorus pulchricornis寄生和发育特征,并测定成蜂生殖力。【结果】线性回归分析表明,雌蜂对中间日龄寄主幼虫的寄生率大于对两端日龄寄主幼虫的寄生率;蜂卵至成虫的存活、成虫体型大小及其生殖力(产卵量)等适合度相关特征均表现出中间日龄寄主幼虫处理大于两端日龄幼虫处理。【结论】研究结果支持“圆屋顶形”假说。  相似文献

Numerous studies of birds have demonstrated the value of producinginsurance eggs. We have previously found that second eggs provideinsurance against failure of first eggs for Nazca boobies (Sulagranti), which raise only one chick to fledging, yet some femaleslay only one egg. We used an 8-year data set to compare 2 hypothesesfor clutch size variation: one based on trade-offs, predictingdeclining future performance by females that lay a costly secondegg and one based on parental quality, predicting that intrinsicallysuperior females lay 2 eggs both currently and in the future.Clutch size variation did not contribute to the best multistatemark–recapture model of survival, suggesting that clutchsize and survival are unrelated and that any survival cost ofreproduction related to laying second eggs is small. Transitionprobabilities between reproductive states were generally, butnot entirely, inconsistent with fecundity costs of producinga marginal egg. Parental quality effects were apparent, withfemales tending to remain in a given reproductive state acrossseasons. Parents producing a marginal egg had consistently higherbreeding success than did parents of 1-egg clutches, due principallyto the insurance effect and secondarily to differences in parentalquality after hatching. Different model selection approachesgave differing results for logistic regression analyses of breedingsuccess of females that hatched eggs. A conventional significance-testing,iterative-fitting approach excluded insurance state from thetop model, whereas the information-theoretic (I-T) approachdetected an association between current insurance state andsubsequent survival and fecundity. Using the I-T approach, potentiallybiological significant (but not statistically significant underconventional analysis) effects were detected that may otherwisehave been ignored.  相似文献
