Previous research on food choice of pigeons foraging alone and in competition showed an indirect response to the competitor, mediated by the resource depletion associated with the competitor. This experiment showed, in addition, that pigeons can adjust their food choice in direct response to the competitor itself. Pigeons foraged for large, preferred grains of maize and smaller, unpreferred grains of wheat presented in bowls covered with sawdust. In a within-subject design, pigeons were tested alone or in competition with another pigeon. In competition, a higher choice proportion of the wheat grains was observed on the first two choices out of 48 items, and this effect increased with time in the experiment. This result underscores the role of learning in group foraging behaviour. It also suggests a possible ecological implication: that individuals that learn faster may enjoy a competitive advantage in terms of reduced delay in responding to the presence of a conspecific.  相似文献

Using multiple‐choice feeding experiments, the selection of six species of macrophytes by the herbivorous rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens was examined. The rabbitfish showed distinct food choice in the laboratory; however, selection of macrophytes by S. fuscescens was not related to their absolute nutrient content (nitrogen, carbon, energy and ash free dry mass). Nutrient assimilation estimates showed that the macrophytes which were most preferred were those that S. fuscescens assimilated best. In S. fuscescens , the macrophytes that were preferred passed through the gut significantly faster than the less preferred species. Gut transit time had a significant effect on the absolute value of a food item in terms of net nutrient gain per unit time. This study showed that food value could be inferred from the absolute nutrient content of the macrophytes. Thus both the ability to assimilate nutrients as well as the absolute nutrient content of macrophytes must be quantified when assessing food value.  相似文献

While competition for resources leading to invasion success is well recognized, avoidance of competition is much less so. Changes in behaviour that lead to avoidance are usually displayed by the weaker competitor. In our case though it was the stronger competitor that changed its behaviour by choosing a host for oviposition that was unacceptable to its competitor and avoiding one that was mutually acceptable; this accelerated the displacement of the competitor. We showed this by enclosing both invader (Middle East Asia Minor 1, B biotype) and indigenous (Australia, AN biotype) members of Bemisia tabaci species complex (sap sucking insects known as whiteflies) into field cages with either two plants that were a mutually acceptable oviposition host or one host that was acceptable to both and the other acceptable to the invader only. When only the mutually acceptable host was available, invader and indigenous females oviposited equally across the two plants. However, when given the choice, adult invaders still distributed themselves evenly across both hosts, but shifted their oviposition away from the mutually acceptable host and instead laid mostly on the host poorly utilized by the indigenous competitor. This indicates that the invader can change ovipositional choice to escape into competition free space.  相似文献

The foraging range of adult snails, Helix aspersa, has beenstudied using radio-transmitters. Snails did not return to anexact roost site after foraging, but often remained in the foodpatch, or returned only to the general roost area. Time lapse video films of the slug Deroceras reticulatum madeunder infra-red lighting in arenas were analysed for tracklengthsand degree of turning, in order to simulate slug movements inan unbounded situation. The results suggest that many food itemsare found by random encounter. Slugs usually ate the first food item found, but often ignoredfood items encountered later. If food was scarce, the slugsfed almost every time. Electronic recordings of bites on a wheatflour pellet over 24 hours show that feeding is most intensein the first two and a half hours from starting to feed, andlater meals are both shorter and less regular. Starved slugsdiffered from fed slugs principally by taking a second mealshortly after the first. When given a choice of a more preferredfood (maize pellets) and a less preferred food (pea pellets)in different ratios, the slugs appeared to encounter pelletsat random, but they fed more from the preferred pellets unlessthe ratio was 1 maize: 7 pea. Starved slugs ate twice as muchas fed ones.  相似文献

Spring wheat and spring barley were grown in elevated atmosphericCO2 in controlled environments. Wheat was grown in monocultureand in competition with three weed species. In monoculture, wheat had 30% more grain yield and 28% less grain nitrogen inelevated compared to ambient atmospheric CO2- In competition, wheat had no significant increase in yield with elevated atmosphericCO2- In competition, grain nitrogen concentration was reducedin response to CO2 with the largest reduction occurring withthe smallest competitor and the smallest reduction occurringwith the largest competitor. Spring barley was grown in monocultureat three nitrogen fertilizer supplies. In elevated atmosphericCO2 there were significant increases in grain yield and reductionsin grain nitrogen concentration at all levels of nitrogen supply. In both species the reductions in grain nitrogen concentrationwere large enough to affect current bread making processes. Key words: Grain nitrogen, weeds, wheat, barley  相似文献

In two experiments, we explored the effects of varying the size and the spatial organization of the stimuli in multi-item arrays on pigeons’ same-different discrimination behavior. The birds had previously learned to discriminate a simultaneously presented array of 16 identical (Same) visual items from an array of 16 nonidentical (Different) visual items, when the correct choice was conditional on the presence of another cue: the color of the background (Castro et al., in press). In Experiment 1, we trained pigeons with 7-item arrays and then tested them with arrays containing the same item, but in a variety of sizes. In Experiment 2, we tested the birds with the items grouped in novel locations: the top, the bottom, the left, or the right portions of the display area, which generated different vertical and horizontal alignments. Accuracy scores revealed virtually perfect stimulus generalization across various item sizes and spatial organizations. Reaction times revealed that the birds perceived different sizes of a single icon as the same stimulus (Experiment 1) and that the birds processed vertical arrangements faster than horizontal arrangements (Experiment 2). These results suggest that the pigeons noticed both physical and spatial changes in the stimuli (as shown by their reaction times), but that these changes did not disrupt the birds’ discriminating the sameness or differentness of the multi-item arrays (as shown by their accuracy scores).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine how the presence of a predator and an interspecific competitor influence the habitat use of adult perch (Perca fluviatilis; size: 15.1 ± 0.5 cm) when given the choice between two adjacent habitats. By conducting aquarium experiments, the habitat occupancy of P. fluviatilis was documented in the presence and absence of a predator (pike Esox lucius; size: 25.4 ± 2.1 cm) and a potential competitor (ruffe Gymnocephalus cernuus; size: 14.1 ± 0.3 cm) fish species. Two P. fluviatilis individuals generally shared the same habitat. In the presence of a conspecific, P. fluviatilis favoured the structurally more-complex, artificial macrophyte habitat over the less-structured rock and sand habitat, which in turn were used equally. In the predator- and competitor treatments, P. fluviatilis seemed to adapt their habitat use to the habitat occupancy of E. lucius and G. cernuus in the Macrophyte vs. Rock and, in the predator treatment, also in the Macrophyte vs. Sand habitat combination, by increasingly occupying a habitat that was used less by the predator or competitor species, respectively. This behaviour suggests that P. fluviatilis tried to avoid the other fish species by choosing a, in some cases less preferred, predator- or competitor-free habitat. This study emphasizes the importance of biological interactions illustrated by the potential of predation risk and competition to structure fish communities by influencing habitat use at small spatial scales.  相似文献

Interspecific competition has been shown to play a role in the structure of ant communities. However, the role of foraging behavior and the type of competition that results from this behavior has been less investigated. Here we present results from baiting experiments at various scales to determine the degree of exploitative and interference competition between two Neotropical ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in pastures in the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua. Results suggest that the coexistence of Solenopsis geminata (Fabricius) and Pheidole subarmata (Mayrs) in Neotropical pastures is the result of a discovery/dominance tradeoff between these two species. Although S. geminata is a good interference competitor and can defend large resources, P. subarmata is a good exploitative competitor and arrives at resources faster than S. geminata. In an environment with mixed resources (large and small), these two species can co-exist. We discuss the implication of this for the invasion potential of S. geminata.  相似文献

Abstract The induction of olfactory preferences by larval and early adult experience for odour from wheat or maize grain was examined for the granary weevil Sitophilus granarius L. in a static four-chamber olfactometer. Weevils were reared on either wheat or maize grain and received different early adult experience. It turned out that weevils that were reared in wheat and isolated as pupae from the kernels preferred wheat odour in the olfactometer when they emerged without any odour or in the presence of maize odour. Weevils that emerged in the presence of wheat odour preferred both wheat and maize odour. When weevils emerged normally as adults from the wheat kernel in which they developed, maize odour was avoided. In contrast, for weevils that were reared in maize no preferences were found in most experiments. Only weevils that emerged in the presence of wheat odour preferred the maize odour over the controls. These results demonstrate that host-selection behaviour in S. granarius weevil is shaped by experience according to the Hopkins host-selection principle or the chemical legacy hypothesis and the neo-Hopkins principle.  相似文献

In many species, individuals specialize on different resources, thereby reducing competition. Such ecological specialization can promote the evolution of alternative ecomorphs—distinct phenotypes adapted for particular resources. Elucidating whether and how this process is influenced by sexual selection is crucial for understanding how ecological specialization promotes the evolution of novel traits and, potentially, speciation between ecomorphs. We evaluated the population-level effects of sexual selection (as mediated by mate choice) on ecological specialization in spadefoot toad tadpoles that express alternative ecomorphs. We manipulated whether sexual selection was present or reversed by mating females to their preferred versus non-preferred males, respectively. We then exposed their tadpoles to resource competition in experimental mesocosms. The resulting distribution of ecomorphs was similar between treatments, but sexual selection generated poorer trait integration in, and lower fitness of, the more specialized carnivore morph. Moreover, disruptive and directional natural selection were weaker in the sexual selection present treatment. Nevertheless, this effect on disruptive selection was smaller than previously documented effects of ecological opportunity and competitor density. Thus, sexual selection can inhibit adaptation to resource competition and thereby hinder ecological specialization, particularly when females obtain fitness benefits from mate choice that offset the cost of producing competitively inferior offspring.  相似文献

Redundant encoding of local and global spatial cues is a common occurrence in many species. However, preferential use of the each type of cue seems to vary across species and tasks. In the current study, pigeons (Columba livia) were trained in three experiments on a touch screen task which included redundant local positional cues and global spatial cues. Specifically, pigeons were required to choose the middle out of three choice squares, such that the position within the array provided local information and the location on the screen provided global information. In Experiment 1, pigeons were trained and tested on vertically aligned arrays. In Experiment 2, pigeons were trained and tested on horizontally aligned arrays, and in Experiment 3, pigeons were trained and tested with vertical, horizontal and diagonally aligned arrays. The results indicate that preference for cue type depends upon the type of spatial information being encoded. Specifically, on vertical and diagonally aligned arrays, pigeons preferred global cues, whereas on horizontally aligned arrays, pigeons preferred local cues.  相似文献

Mate choice is a critical part of sexual selection. One constituent of mate choice is attractiveness, which serves as a projection surface for traits signalling quality and condition to prospective reproductive partners. In guinea pigs, females generally decide whom they will select as partner and when to switch to a new one. The aim of this study was to investigate for universality in male traits possibly associated with female preference. Characteristics of stress response were chosen, as they are relatively stable in their behavioural and physiological expression. Two consecutive experiments were done on isosexually kept males. In the first experiment, behavioural performance in a forced swim-test was noted, after basal endocrine status had been documented with three samples per individual. In a second experiment, the same males were presented to females in a round-robin choice paradigm. A discriminant analysis confirmed a categorization of males into groups that were preferred by different females either two times [more preferred (MP), n = 6] or less than that [less preferred (LP), n = 12]. Mean basal cortisol levels were comparable, but mean basal testosterone (T) was significantly higher in LP. This points at a scenario where higher T might be advantageous in male–male competition but perhaps less important for the formation of male–female bonds. Behaviourally, MP completed the swim-test significantly faster than LP, which may indicate greater goal directedness and motivation. We conclude that traits associated with stress responses may be components of male attractiveness, their stability perhaps reflecting adaptive qualities.  相似文献

In field experiments, the competition among plants of two distinct wheat genotypes in binary mixtures, and among three genotypes being grown in adjacent rows was investigated. The competition greatly affected the over-ground dry weight, weight of stem and grain per plant. This effect was undercompensatory, the depression in poor competitor was higher than the enhancement of strong competitor for all these characteristics. From final components of grain yield per plant, the number of fertile stems and number of grains per ear were more affected than weight per grain. More expressively than weight of grain on the main-stem ear, the weight of grain per average secondary ear-bearing stem was affected by competition in binary mixture. The enhancement in standard height—a strongly competitive genotype— reached in binary mixture about 10% for this last characteristic in comparison with the value from the pure stand. Some morphological characteristics of plants being in relation with competition for grain yield per plant are discussed in these experiments.  相似文献

This paper reviews recent research on the processes involved in the yield advantage in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)/maize (Zea mays L.), wheat/soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], faba bean (Vicia faba L.)/maize, peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)/maize and water convolvulus (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk.)/maize intercropping. In wheat/maize and wheat/soybean intercropping systems, a significant yield increase of intercropped wheat over sole wheat was observed, which resulted from positive effects of the border row and inner rows of intercropped wheat. The border row effect was due to interspecific competition for nutrients as wheat had a higher competitive ability than either maize or soybean had. There was also compensatory growth, or a recovery process, of subordinate species such as maize and soybean, offsetting the impairment of early growth of the subordinate species. Finally, both dominant and subordinate species in intercropping obtain higher yields than that in corresponding sole wheat, maize or soybean. We summarized these processes as the `competition-recovery production principle'. We observed interspecific facilitation, where maize improves iron nutrition in intercropped peanut, faba bean enhances nitrogen and phosphorus uptake by intercropped maize, and chickpea facilitates P uptake by associated wheat from phytate-P. Furthermore, intercropping reduced the nitrate content in the soil profile as intercropping uses soil nutrients more efficiently than sole cropping.  相似文献

? Premise of the study: Plant communities in temperate zones are dominated by clonal plants that can plastically modify their growth characteristics in response to competition. Given that plants compete with one another, and the implications this has for species coexistence, we conducted a study to assess how clonal species morphologically respond to competition for light depending on its intensity and heterogeneity, which are determined by the competitor species. ? Methods: We assessed the morphological response to competition for light of the clonal species Trifolium repens L. by measuring its growth performance, and vertical and horizontal growth traits. We used five competitive environments, i.e., one without competitor and four differing by their competitor species creating different conditions of competition intensity and heterogeneity. ? Key results: The morphological response of Trifolium repens to competition for light depended on the competitor identity. Competition intensity and heterogeneity, determined by competitor identity, had an interactive effect on most traits. The increase in petiole elongation and specific leaf area due to increased competition intensity was observed only at low to intermediate competition heterogeneity. Competition heterogeneity promoted the elongation of clone connections allowing space exploration. ? Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that the intensity and heterogeneity of competition, which depended on competitor identity, are of primary importance in determining the plastic response of Trifolium repens. This emphasizes that it is important to consider the fine-scale spatial distribution of individuals when studying their interactions within plant communities.  相似文献

Frequency-dependent disease impacts may contribute to the maintenance of genetic diversity and sexual reproduction in plant populations. In earlier work with experimental wheat (Triticum aestivum) populations at a single density, we found that stripe rust (caused by Puccinia striiformis) created frequency-dependent selection on its host but competitive interactions between host genotypes reduced the potential for disease to maintain genetic polymorphisms in this highly self-pollinated species; the weaker competitor actually exhibited positive disease-mediated frequency-dependent selection. Based on these results we predicted that at low density, where the overall level of competition is lower, disease would have a stronger impact relative to competition and thus be more likely to maintain genetic polymorphisms; at low densities the greatest effect of disease for negative frequency-dependent selection should be seen in the weak competitor. Here we report on results with wheat stripe rust in which we altered both the frequency and density of host genotypes in factorial combinations of two-way mixtures where each host genotype was attacked by its own specialized race of rust. Within each density disease levels increased with genotype frequencies, creating frequency-dependent disease attack at all densities. Similarly, disease created negative frequency-dependent selection on its host at all densities, as a genotype’s fitness was often greater at low than high frequency when disease was present. Disease levels increased with plant density in 1997 but decreased in 1998. While increasing plant density reduced absolute fitness, presumably as a result of increased competition, a genetic polymorphism was not more likely to be maintained at low than high density as we had predicted. Within each density, the impact of disease was insufficient to reverse the slope of the relationship between absolute fitness and planted frequency from positive to negative for the less competitive host genotype, thus preventing the maintenance of a genetic polymorphism.  相似文献

In intraspecific competition, the sex of competing individuals is likely to be important in determining the outcome of competitive interactions and the way exposure to conspecifics during development influences adult fitness traits. Previous studies have explored differences between males and females in their response to intraspecific competition. However, few have tested how the sex of the competitors, or any interactions between focal and competitor sex, influences the nature and intensity of competition. We set up larval seed beetles Callosobruchus maculatus to develop either alone or in the presence of a male or female competitor and measured a suite of traits: development time, emergence weight; male ejaculate mass, copulation duration, and lifespan; and female lifetime fecundity, offspring egg–adult survival, and lifespan. We found effects of competition and competitor sex on the development time and emergence weight of both males and females, and also of an interaction between focal and competitor sex: Females emerged lighter when competing with another female, while males did not. There was little effect of larval competition on male and female adult fitness traits, with the exception of the effect of a female competitor on a focal female's offspring survival rate. Our results highlight the importance of directly measuring the effects of competition on fitness traits, rather than distant proxies for fitness, and suggest that competition with the sex with the greater resource requirements (here females) might play a role in driving trait evolution. We also found that male–male competition during development resulted in shorter copulation times than male–female competition, a result that remained when controlling for the weight of competitors. Although it is difficult to definitively tease apart the effects of social environment and access to resources, this result suggests that something about the sex of competitors other than their size is driving this pattern.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Invasion by alien plants may be partially related to disturbance-related increases in nutrient availability and decreases of competition with native species, and to superior competitive ability of the invader. Oxalis pes-caprae is an invasive winter geophyte in the Mediterranean Islands that reproduces vegetatively via bulbs. An investigation was made into the relative responses of O. pes-caprae and the native annual grass Lolium rigidum to nutrient availability and to competition with each other in order to understand patterns of invasion in the field. Because Oxalis accumulates oxalic acid in its leaves, which could ameliorate soil phosphorous availability, field observations were made to determine whether the presence of Oxalis alters soil P availability. METHODS: A full-factorial glasshouse experiment was conducted with nutrient availability (high and low) and competition (Lolium alone, Oxalis alone, and Lolium and Oxalis together). Plant performance was assessed by determining (1) above- and below-ground biomass at the time of Oxalis maximum biomass and (2) reproductive output of Oxalis and Lolium at the end of their respective growth cycles. Measurements were also taken for leaf N and P content. Soil samples were taken in the field from paired Oxalis-invaded and non-invaded plots located in Menorca (Balearic Islands) and available P was determined. KEY RESULTS: High nutrient availability increased Oxalis and Lolium vegetative biomass and reproductive output to a similar degree. Competition with Lolium had a much stronger negative effect on Oxalis bulb production than reduced nutrients. Lolium was a superior competitor than Oxalis; the latter did not affect Lolium maximum biomass and spike production. Significantly greater soil-P availability in Oxalis-invaded field soils relative to paired non-invaded soils suggest that Oxalis influences soil P cycling. CONCLUSIONS: Oxalis is a poor competitor. This is consistent with the preferential distribution of Oxalis in disturbed areas such as ruderal habitats, and might explain its low influence on the cover of native species in invaded sites. The results also suggest that certain disturbances (e.g. autumn ploughing) may greatly enhance Oxalis invasion.  相似文献

Mixtures and monocultures of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and wild oat (Avena fatua), a common weedy competitor of wheat, were exposed to enhanced solar UV-B radiation simulating a 20% reduction in stratospheric ozone to assess the timing and seasonal development of the UV-B effects on light competition in these species. Results from two years of field study revealed that UV-B enhancement had no detectable effect on the magnitude or timing of seedling emergence in either species. End-of-season measurements showed significant UV-B inhibition of leaf insertion height in wild oat in mixture and monoculture in the second year (irrigated year) but not in the first year (drought year). Leaf insertion height of wheat was not affected by UV-B in either year. The UV-B treatment had no detectable effect on monoculture or total (combined species) mixture LAI but did significantly increase (5–7%) the fractional contribution of wheat to the mixture LAI after four weeks of growth in both years. In addition, the UV-B treatment had subtle effects on LAI height profiles with early season mixtures showing significant reductions in wild oat LAI in lower canopy layers in both years while midseason Year 2 mixtures showed significant reductions in wild oat LAI in upper canopy layers. The changes in canopy structure were found to significantly increase (6–7%) the proportional simulated clear sky canopy photosynthesis and light interception of wheat in mixture. These findings, and others, indicate that the effects of UV-B enhancement on competition are realized very early in canopy development and provide additional support for the hypothesis that UV-B enhancement may shift the balance of competition between these species indirectly by altering competitive interactions for light.  相似文献
