The contribution of sex steroids to sex-related differences in renal prostaglandin dehydrogenase activity and urinary prostaglandin excretion was examined in 7-8-week-old male and female rats subjected to sham-operation or gonadectomy at 3 weeks of age. Rats were injected subcutaneously twice over a 6-day interval with vehicle (peanut oil, 0.5 mg/kg) or with depot forms of testosterone (10 mg/kg), estradiol (0.1 mg/kg), progesterone (5 mg/kg), or with estradiol and progesterone combined (0.1 and 5 mg/kg). After the second injection, 24-h urine samples were collected for prostaglandin measurement by radioimmunoassay; the rats were killed, and renal and pulmonary prostaglandin dehydrogenase activities were determined by radiochemical assay. Renal prostaglandin dehydrogenase activity was 10-times higher in intact male rats than in intact females. Gonadectomy increased renal prostaglandin dehydrogenase activity 4-fold in females, but had no effect in males; estradiol, alone or combined with progesterone, markedly suppressed renal prostaglandin dehydrogenase activity in both sexes, while testosterone or progesterone alone had no effect. Pulmonary prostaglandin dehydrogenase did not differ between the sexes and was unaffected by gonadectomy or sex-steroid treatment. Intact female sham-operated rats excreted 70-100% more prostaglandin E2, prostaglandin F2 alpha, and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha in urine than did males; gonadectomy abolished the difference in urinary prostaglandin E2 excretion. Estradiol decreased urinary prostaglandin E2 in females but not in males; treatment with other sex steroids did not alter urinary prostaglandin excretion.  相似文献

Tribulus terrestris is an herbal nutritional supplement that is promoted to produce large gains in strength and lean muscle mass in 5-28 days (15, 18). Although some manufacturers claim T. terrestris will not lead to a positive drug test, others have suggested that T. terrestris may increase the urinary testosterone/epitestosterone (T/E) ratio, which may place athletes at risk of a positive drug test. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of T. terrestris on strength, fat free mass, and the urinary T/E ratio during 5 weeks of preseason training in elite rugby league players. Twenty-two Australian elite male rugby league players (mean +/- SD; age = 19.8 +/- 2.9 years; weight = 88.0 +/- 9.5 kg) were match-paired and randomly assigned in a double-blind manner to either a T. terrestris (n = 11) or placebo (n = 11) group. All subjects performed structured heavy resistance training as part of the club's preseason preparations. A T. terrestris extract (450 mg.d(-1)) or placebo capsules were consumed once daily for 5 weeks. Muscular strength, body composition, and the urinary T/E ratio were monitored prior to and after supplementation. After 5 weeks of training, strength and fat free mass increased significantly without any between-group differences. No between-group differences were noted in the urinary T/E ratio. It was concluded that T. terrestris did not produce the large gains in strength or lean muscle mass that many manufacturers claim can be experienced within 5-28 days. Furthermore, T. terrestris did not alter the urinary T/E ratio and would not place an athlete at risk of testing positive based on the World Anti-Doping Agency's urinary T/E ratio limit of 4:1.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to compare the concentrations of calcium and phosphorus and Ca/P ratio in the meat of females and males of the roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) caught from the Brda River. The study involved 40 roach individuals caught in fall and spring (10 females and 10 males from each season). The muscle samples for analyses were taken from the large side muscle of the fish body above the lateral line. Ca concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry; P content was analyzed by the colorimetric method. Calcium concentration in the meat of analysed roach was higher in samples collected from fish caught in spring and equaled 1.82 g kg(-1) in females and 1.93 g kg(-1) in males. Values for individuals from autumn amounted to 0.83 and 1.10 g kg(-1), respectively. Statistically significant differences in calcium content were detected between individuals caught in different seasons, but samples taken from females and males caught within one season did not differ substantially. The mean value of P in the meat of analysed roach caught in spring was higher than in fish from autumn, and it was respectively 2.24 g kg(-1) in females and 2.30 g kg(-1) in males from spring, and 1.89 g kg(-1) in the tissue of females and 2.01 g kg(-1) in males in fish from autumn. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus in the meat of analysed wild roach ranged from 0.43:1 to 0.82:1. A negative and statistically significant correlation between Ca and P concentrations was found in the meat and the body length of analysed roach from the Brda River.  相似文献

We examined the estrogenic effect of 2,2'4,4'5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB 153) on the rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. We measured levels of plasma estradiol-17beta (E(2)) and testosterone (T) by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Plasma concentrations of T and 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone in female and male fish injected with PCB 153 using two dosages (0.16 mg/kg body weight. and 0.57 mg/kg) did not differ significantly between sexes or from sham-injected controls of the same sex. Plasma concentrations of E(2) in females injected with PCB 153 (both levels) increased at 12 and 24 h. Concentrations of plasma vitellogenin (VTG) in females increased 72 h after injection with PCB 153 and reached 0.38 and 1.25 mg/mL, respectively. No VTG was detected in males injected with the same dosage. These results suggest that PCB 153 may lead to the production VTG in female rockfish through a synergistic effect with E(2), resulting in indirect disruption of the aromatization process.  相似文献

Peripheral administration of sulfated cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) potently reduces alcohol intake, preference, and blood levels in rats. MK-329 (L-364,718 or Devazepide) acts at peripheral cholecystokinin (CCKA) receptors to antagonize CCK-8's physiological and behavioral effects, such as pancreatic stimulation and inhibition of feeding. We determined whether CCKA receptor blockade would also prevent CCK-8's alcohol satiety effect. Water-deprived female and male rats (n = 7 for each) received randomized combinations of intraperitoneal injections of MK-329 (0, 100, 200, or 400 μg/kg) followed by CCK-8 (0 or 4 μg/kg). Rats were then given access to 5% w/v ethanol for 30 min, followed by 30-min access to water, with food ad lib. MK-329 at all doses significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the suppression of alcohol intake and food intake by CCK-8. MK-329 alone increased alcohol intake at 400 μg/kg, and increased food intake, in females and males at 100 and 200 μg/kg, respectively. We concluded that CCK-8's alcohol and food satiation effects depend on specific, peripheral CCKA receptors, and satiation of alcohol consumption and drinking-associated feeding reflect an endogenous functional interaction of CCK-8 with CCKA receptors.  相似文献

It is known that some vertebrate reproductive hormones have effects on rotifer reproduction, but little is known about their effects in combination. This motivated us to examine the effects of waterborne progesterone (P), testosterone (T), and estradiol (E) on reproduction of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus, comparing exposures to single hormones and mixtures with a total concentration of 1000 μg/L. Asexual population growth (r) was high in all treatments, ranging from 1.28 to 1.43 d–1 (P‐E), and from 0.99 to 1.22 d–1 (P‐T). These results indicate that E, P, or T alone, or in combinations of P‐E and P‐T totaling 1000 µg/L, and the 3‐way combination P‐E‐T at 1200 µg/L do not reduce the asexual reproduction of B. calyciflorus. However, significant effects were detected on sexual reproduction with exposure to these hormone concentrations. Exposure to P‐T and P‐E at 1000 μg/L decreased resting egg production significantly. Analysis of mating indicated that fertilization was 5.3 times higher in the control than in treatments where females were exposed to 500 µg/L each P‐T. A similar result was observed when both females and males were exposed to 500 µg/L each of P‐T. When males alone were treated with 500 µg/L each of P‐T, there was no significant difference in male fertility compared to the control. These results suggest that B. calyciflorus uses oxidized sterols similar to P and T to regulate sexual reproduction and waterborne exposure of females to these compounds interferes with fertilization and resting egg production. The effects of gonadal steroids on gonadosomatic index (GSI; gonad wt/total body wt x 100), pituitary gonadotropin (GTH) content, and serum GTH response to [D-Ala6,Pro9-Net]-luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH-A) were investigated throughout the seasonal reproductive cycle of the goldfish. Gonad-intact female fish were implanted i.p. for 5 days with silastic pellets containing no steroid (blank), testosterone (T; 100 micrograms/g), or estradiol (E2; 100 micrograms/g). The serum GTH response at 6 h following i.p. injection of saline or 0.1 microgram/g LHRH-A was assessed. In blank-implanted, saline-injected animals, seasonal variations in GSI, pituitary GTH content, and serum GTH levels were evident; maximal and minimal levels were noted in the spring and summer months, respectively. In blank-implanted fish, LHRH-A effectively stimulated GTH release in females undergoing gonadal recrudescence (late autumn and winter) and in sexually mature (spring) females, but not in sexually regressed (summer and early autumn) females. Implantation of T or E2 raised serum steroid levels to those found during ovulation in goldfish. Steroid treatments did not affect unstimulated serum GTH levels at any time of the year. Testosterone effectively potentiated the serum GTH response to LHRH-A during the entire reproductive cycle, whereas the positive effects of E2 were evident in sexually regressed and post-spawning females only. Both T and E2 potentiated the GTH response to LHRH-A in male fish. To examine the involvement of T aromatization in mediating its actions on induced GTH secretion, male and female fish were implanted with T or the nonaromatizable androgens 5 alpha-dihydroxytestosterone (DHT; 100 micrograms/g) and 11-keto-testosterone (11-KT; 250 micrograms/animal). Testosterone potentiated the GTH response to LHRH-A in both males and females whereas DHT and 11-KT were without effect. Furthermore, the positive action of T on induced GTH secretion was blocked by 2-day pretreatment with the aromatase inhibitor 1,4,6-androstatrien-3,17-dione (100 or 300 micrograms/g). Multiple i.p. injections of hCG (0.2 microgram/g every 3 days for 39 days), probably through stimulation of endogenous T secretion, resulted in potentiation of the GTH response to LHRH-A in mature male goldfish. These results clearly demonstrate that T, through aromatization to E2, can increase pituitary responsiveness to exogenous LHRH-A in gonad-intact male and female goldfish.  相似文献

Sternopygus macrurus of both sexes were injected with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or saline. Electric organ discharge (EOD) frequency rose after hCG injections in females and gradually declined to baseline levels over the next few weeks. EOD changes in males were more complex and variable; most males showed an initial minor rise in EOD frequency followed by a larger decrease, or simply a decrease. hCG treatment also resulted in a rise in electroreceptor best frequency and shortened electric organ pulse duration in females, and had the opposite effect on these parameters in males. The saline-injected controls showed no changes in any of these parameters. Levels of testosterone (T) and 11-ketotestosterone, but not estrogen (E), were elevated in males preceding the fall in EOD frequency, whereas neither T nor E changed significantly in females before EOD frequency increases. Saline injections caused a drop in T in the male control group and had no effect in the female control group. We presume that the effect of hCG on the electrosensory system of males is mediated via androgens. Whether the effects of hCG on females are mediated by slight increases in circulating levels of gonadal steroids, the release of hormones other than T or E, or are due to direct effects on the nervous system is not known.  相似文献

The relationship between birth weight and relative subcutaneous fat distribution at school age was considered in 131 boys and 106 girls 7 to 12 years of age. Relative fat distribution at school age was estimated with the ratio of the subscapular to triceps skinfolds (S/T) for the total sample, and with the ratio of the sum of two trunk (subscapular, midaxillary) to the sum of two extremity (triceps, medial calf) skinfolds (T/E) for subsamples of 102 boys and 63 girls. There were no sex differences in the S/T ratio (mm/mm), boys 0.62 ± 0.15, girls 0.63 ± 0.18; T/E ratio (mm/mm), boys 0.58 ± 0.13, girls 0.59 ± 0.16; and BMI (kg/m2), boys 17.1 ± 2.4, girls 16.9 ± 2.2. Second order partial correlations, controlling for age and the BMI or age and sum of skinfolds, between birth weight and the skinfold ratios are, respectively, ?0.22 and ?0.20 (p<0.01) for S/T and ?0.29 and ?032 (p<0.01) for T/E in girls, and ?0.18 and ?0.17 (p<0.05) for S/T and ?0.06 and ?0.6 for T/E in boys. Though low, the correlations suggest that as birth weight decreases proportionally more subcutaneous fat is accumulated on the trunk than on the extremities, more so in females than in males. Results of stepwise multiple regression analyses indicate that birth weight accounts for from 2% to 8% of the variance in relative subcutaneous fat distribution at school age.  相似文献

A complete randomised block design experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of benzoic acid inclusion level on nitrogen (N) metabolism, and manure ammonia (NH3) and odour emissions in finishing pigs. Sixteen boars (64 kg live weight ± 1.5 kg) were assigned to one of four dietary treatments (T) varying in benzoic acid concentration: (T1) 0 g benzoic acid/kg (as fed); (T2) 10 g benzoic acid/kg; (T3) 20 g benzoic acid/kg; (T4) 30 g benzoic acid/kg. Animals were housed in individual metabolism crates and feed was provided ad libitum. All diets were formulated to have similar concentration of digestible energy and ileal digestible lysine with benzoic acid replacing wheat in the diet. There was a linear decrease in NH3 emission (P<0.001), as the dietary benzoic acid concentration increased (141.4 mg/g versus 40.5 mg/g N intake (S.E.M. 12.1) over the 240-h storage period). However, there was no effect (P>0.05) of benzoic acid on odour concentration. Urinary nitrogen (N) excretion, total N excretion and the urinary:faecal N ratio were linearly reduced (P<0.05) with increasing benzoic acid inclusion. Furthermore, N retention increased linearly (P<0.05) as benzoic acid concentration increased from 0 g/kg to 30 g/kg in the diet. In conclusion, the inclusion of benzoic acid in the diet of finishing pigs has the potential to reduce total and urinary N excretion and the urinary to faecal N ratio. This was mirrored by reductions in manure NH3 emissions in the benzoic acid supplemented treatments.  相似文献

German Landrace piglets, 6-7 days of age, received either saline (9 males, 8 females), 0.5 mg naloxone/kg body weight (7 males, 7 females), 2.0 mg naloxone/kg (7 males, 8 females) or 0.5 mg DADLE (potent leu-enkephalin analog)/kg (7 males, 7 females) through a catheter inserted into the jugular vein 2-4 days previously. Male or female piglets were allocated randomly, within litter, to the different experimental groups. Blood samples were withdrawn for a period of 240 min at 10-min intervals for the first 60 min following injection and at 20-min intervals for the rest of the test period. Piglets were separated from their mother via a detachable wall and were allowed to suckle every 50 min. DADLE failed to alter plasma levels of LH in both males and females. Naloxone induced a significant (P less than 0.01) decrease in LH concentrations in females 10 to 60 min after injection (saline: 2.3 +/- 0.2 ng/ml plasma (SEM); 0.5 mg naloxone/kg: 1.0 +/- 0.2 ng/ml plasma and 2 mg naloxone/kg 1.2 +/- 0.4 ng/ml plasma). In males low doses of naloxone reduced plasma LH levels 10 to 40 min after injection (saline: 2.0 +/- 0.3 ng/ml plasma and 0.5 ng naloxone/kg: 1.1 +/- 0.3 ng/ml), whereas a decrease in plasma LH levels occurred 80 to 140 min after injection of high doses of naloxone (saline: 2.1 +/- 0.2 ng/ml and 2 mg naloxone/kg: 1.0 +/- 0.2 ng/ml).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Sex ratio theory predictions concerning differential parental investment in offspring by sex were tested on southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina , breeding at Península Valdés, Argentina. Females invested equally in sons and daughters, as reflected by the similar mass at birth (mean ± 1 S.D.) of 14 males (44.1 ± 6.5 kg) and 14 females (43.4 ± 3.8 kg), and similar mass at weaning of 52 males (131.5 ± 22.4 kg) and 38 females (131.4 ± 18.3 kg). There were also no sex differences in the rate of mass gain during nursing (males = 4.0 ± 0.9 kg/day; females = 3.9 ± 0.8 kg/day), rate of mass loss during the first month of post-weaning fast (males = 0.85 ± 0.19 kg/day; females = 0.92 ± 0.15 kg/day), mean age at weaning (males = 22.3 ± 1.6 days; females = 22.7 ± 1.7 days), and female nursing behaviour. Mother's size accounted for most of the variation in mass of pups at weaning. Mothers ranked as small, medium and large, weaned pups with a mean mass of 102, 130 and 145 kg, respectively. The sex ratio of weanlings did not differ from unity. These data are consistent with Fisher's (1930) sex ratio theory.  相似文献

The effect of differences in sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels associated with reproductive status on free 17 beta-estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) was characterized in cynomolgus monkeys. Cycling female cynomolgus monkeys had higher SHBG levels than males, pregnant and lactating females (P less than 0.05). Ovariectomized females were not different than control females, suggesting no hypoestrogenic effect. The percentage of free T was elevated in pregnant animals (P less than 0.05) compared to normal males and females, but the percentage of free E2 was similar between these groups. Although a gender difference in the percentages of free E2 and T was not detected, there was a gender difference in the free T and E2 concentrations due to endogenous secretion. Increased free E2 concentrations during pregnancy were the result of endogenous secretion rather than the decreased binding capacity of SHBG; the increased percentage of free T during pregnancy significantly increased free T concentrations. These data suggest that the gender difference in SHBG levels in cynomolgus monkeys is due to androgenic influences and that estrogens have minimal influence. Furthermore, the decrease in SHBG levels during pregnancy and lactation may not be entirely dependent on these androgenic influences.  相似文献

A genome-wide association study identified that LRP2 rs2544390 in intron 1 was associated with serum uric acid (SUA) levels among Japanese, as well as polymorphisms of SLC22A12, ABCG2, and SLC2A9. This study aimed to confirm the association of rs2544390 C/T with SUA, as well as another LRP2 polymorphism (rs3755166 G/A) in the promoter. Subjects were 5016 health checkup examinees (3409 males and 1607 females) aged 35 to 69years with creatinine<2.0mg/dL. The subjects with SLC22A12 258WW, SLC2A9 rs11722228C allele, ABCG2 126QQ and 141Q allele (2546 males and 1199 females) were selected for analysis. Mean SUA was 6.03mg/dL for CC, 6.18mg/dL for CT, and 6.19mg/dL for TT among males (p=0.012), and 4.49mg/dL, 4.45mg/dL, and 4.42mg/dL among females (not significant), respectively. No association was observed for rs3755166. The association with rs2544390 was stronger among male drinkers. The odds ratio of drinking ≥5/week relative to no drinking for hyperuricemia (SUA≥7mg/dL and/or under medication for hyperuricemia) was 1.11 (95% confidence interval, 0.67-1.84) among CC males, 1.75 (1.22-2.51) among CT males, and 3.13 (1.80-5.43) among TT males. The interaction terms with drinking ≥5/week were 1.56 (p=0.156) for CT and 2.87 (p=0.005) for TT. This was the first report on the interaction between LRP2 genotype and alcohol drinking for SUA. Since the low density lipoprotein-related protein 2 (megalin) encoded by LRP2 is a multi-ligand endocytic receptor expressed in many tissues including the kidney proximal tubules, the association/interaction remained to be confirmed both epidemiologically and biologically.  相似文献

Hypotheses on total body chemical composition were tested using data from 350 Suffolk sheep grown to a wide range of live weights, and fed in a non-limiting way, or with reduced amounts of feed, or ad libitum on feeds of reduced protein content. The sheep were from an experiment where selection used an index designed to increase the lean deposition rate while restricting the fat deposition rate. Ultrasound muscle and fat depths were the only composition measurements in the index. The animals were males and females from a selection (S) line and its unselected control (C). The protein content of the lipid-free dry matter was unaffected by live weight, sex or feeding treatment with only a very small effect of genetic line (0.762 kg/kg in S and 0.753 kg/kg in C; P < 0.05). The form of the relationship between water and protein was not affected by any of the factors; in the different kinds of sheep it was consistent with no effect other than through differences in mature protein weight. The water : protein ratio at maturity was estimated as 3.45. Over the whole dataset, lipid weight (L) increased with protein weight (P) according to L = 0.3135 × P1.850. Allowing for this scaling, fatness increased on low-protein feeds, was greater in females than in males and in C than in S (P < 0.001). Lipid content (g/kg fleece-free empty body weight) was reduced by restricted feeding only in males at the highest slaughter weight (114 kg). The lines differed in lipid content (P < 0.001) with means of 265.1 g/kg for C and 237.3 g/kg for S. Importantly, there was no interaction between line and feeding treatments. A higher proportion of total body protein was in the carcass in S than in C (0.627 v. 0.610; P < 0.001). For lipid, the difference was reversed (0.736 v. 0.744; P < 0.05). The total energy content increased quadratically with slaughter weight. At a particular weight, the energy content of gain was higher in females than in males and in C than in S. Genetic selection affected body composition at a weight favouring the distribution of protein to the carcass and lipid to the non-carcass. Once allowing for effects of genetic selection, sex and feeding treatment on fatness, simple rules can be used to generate the chemical composition of sheep.  相似文献

Abstract: Non‐human primates are widely used in research, yet relatively few studies have addressed potential pharmacokinetic differences between males and females. The present study examined the relationship between total body water, sex, age, and weight in the rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta). Ethanol‐naïve, adolescent rhesus macaques (n = 119) were administered ethanol (males, 2.1 g/kg; females, 2.0 g/kg) intravenously, and blood samples for blood ethanol concentration obtained at 5, 10, and 60 minutes following the end of the infusion. Non‐linear regression was used to compare and contrast a series of pharmacokinetic models examining the relationship between weight, sex, age, Vd and zero‐order elimination rate. Vd (mean ± SEM) for male rhesus was 0.771 ± 0.008 l/kg and for females was 0.730 ± 0.008 l/kg, different at P < 0.00001. There were no sex differences in the rate of zero‐order ethanol elimination, estimated to be 0.0032 ± 0.0004 g/kg/minute. The data reported here may be useful in designing and interpreting pharmacokinetic studies using rhesus monkeys.  相似文献

Use of testosterone enanthate has been shown to significantly increase strength within 6-12 weeks of administration (2, 9), however, it is unclear if the ergogenic benefits are evident in less than 6 weeks. Testosterone enanthate is classified as a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and its use may be detected by way of the urinary testosterone/epitestosterone (T/E) ratio (16). The two objectives of this study were to establish (a) if injection of 3.5 mg.kg(-1) testosterone enanthate once per week could increase muscular strength and cycle sprint performance in 3-6 weeks; and (b) if the WADA-imposed urinary T/E ratio of 4:1 could identify all subjects being administered 3.5 mg.kg(-1) testosterone enanthate. Sixteen healthy young men were match-paired and were assigned randomly in a double-blind manner to either a testosterone enanthate or a placebo group. All subjects performed a structured heavy resistance training program while receiving either testosterone enanthate (3.5 mg.kg(-1)) or saline injections once weekly for 6 weeks. One repetition maximum (1RM) strength measures and 10-second cycle sprint performance were monitored at the pre (week 0), mid (week 3), and post (week 6) time points. Body mass and the urinary T/E ratio were measured at the pre (week 0) and post (week 6) time points. When compared with baseline (pre), 1RM bench press strength and total work during the cycle sprint increased significantly at week 3 (p < 0.01) and week 6 (p < 0.01) in the testosterone enanthate group, but not in the placebo group. Body mass at week 6 was significantly greater than at baseline in the testosterone enanthate group (p < 0.01), but not in the placebo group. Despite the clear ergogenic effects of testosterone enanthate in as little as 3 weeks, 4 of the 9 subjects in the testosterone enanthate group ( approximately 44%) did not test positive to testosterone under current WADA urinary T/E ratio criteria.  相似文献

A survey of 787 University of Malawi students (481 males and 306 females) using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) indicated that about 72% of responders (78% of males and 63% of females) drink alcohol. The mean AUDIT score was 3.4+/-5.3 for females and 13.2+/-8.9 for males. Some 54.1% of males and 16.5% of females had the AUDIT score above the threshold level of 8.0, which corresponded with high mean values of alcohol consumption per week (222.8+/-162.7 g of pure ethanol for males and 100.3+/-98.3 g for females). In addition, about 74.4 % of male students and 27.3% of females reported episodes of heavy drinking. The findings stressed the need for developing of alcohol control policies in the University of Malawi and in the country as a whole.  相似文献

Although neonatal development is generally associated with increased levels of circulating testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2), food deprivation may inhibit steroidogenesis. Therefore, these potentially conflicting stimuli were examined in fasting weaned northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) pups by measuring serum concentrations of T, E2, progesterone (P4), and luteinizing hormone (LH) by either radioimmunoassay (P4, LH) or enzymeimmunoassay (T, E2). Blood samples were obtained from 20 male and 20 female pups at both early (<1 wk postweaning) and late (6-8 wk postweaning) periods during their natural postweaning fast. T in males (early: 2.9 +/- 0.4 ng/mL; late: 16 +/- 2 ng/mL; P < 0.0001) and E2 in females (early: 42 +/- 6 pg/mL; late: 67 +/- 5 pg/mL; P < 0.01) increased between the two measurement periods, while P4 (early: 2.5 +/- 0.3 ng/mL; late: 2.1 +/- 0.3 ng/mL; P > 0.05) did not. LH increased (early: 46 +/- 4 pg/mL; late: 65 +/- 6 pg/mL; P < 0.05) in males but not in females (early: 69 +/- 9 pg/mL; late: 65 +/- 6 pg/mL; P > 0.05). Increases in LH and T suggest that LH may stimulate T secretion. Alternatively, relatively low concentrations of LH in both males and females may reflect negative feedback inhibition imposed by elevated T and E2 concentrations. Despite the inherent postweaning fast, concentrations of T and E2 increased, suggesting that they may be critical for the continued development of pups. Therefore, compensatory mechanisms may exist that alleviate the fasting-induced inhibition of gonadal steroidogenesis during neonatal development in elephant seal pups.  相似文献
