Chromosome counts are reported of 38 populations representing 24 species of the genus Cousinia from Iran, one of the main centres of speciation of the genus. Sixteen of the counts are new to science. Our results confirm that Cousinia exhibits a complex dysploid series ranging from x  = 13 to x  = 9. One of the basic chromosome numbers, x  = 9, is new for the genus and must be confirmed. Recent molecular studies have clarified the problem of the generic limits of Carthamus . However, taxonomic problems remain in the sectional classification: section Carthamus was confirmed as a natural group, but molecular phylogenies based on DNA sequences did not resolve the other sections, resulting in a confusing conglomerate. A survey based on RAPD markers has been carried out in this conflicting group of sections, with the aim of evaluating the usefulness of these markers at the section and species levels. On the basis of the results, correlated with morphological and karyological characters, some recommendations are made in relation to the taxonomy of Carthamus . The number of sections is reduced from five to two: section Thamnacanthus is currently classified as a different genus, Phonus ; section Carthamus s.s. is retained in its present delimitation, and section Atractylis is redefined, including current sections Atractylis , Lepidopappus and Odontagnathius . The commonly accepted treatment of some taxa as subspecies is not well founded, and C. alexandrinus , C. creticus , C. tenuis and C. turkestanicus should be considered as independent species. Our results confirm that methodological problems posed by RAPD markers can be avoided by careful laboratory procedures and appropriate data analyses; they also suggest that this kind of marker is useful at low taxonomic levels and is, furthermore, complementary to DNA sequence analysis.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 147 , 375–383.  相似文献

Sequence data from a portion of the external transcribed spacer (ETS) and internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of 18S-26S nuclear ribosomal DNA were used to resolve historical biogeography and ecology of true thistles (Cirsium, Cardueae, Compositae) in the New World. The 650 base-pair, 3' portion of the ETS examined here showed a level of variation across taxa similar to that of the ITS sequences included. A maximum-likelihood tree based on combined ETS and ITS sequences leads us to suggest that the New World species of true thistles constitute a major lineage, which in turn comprises several smaller lineages. A western North American lineage shows weak quartet-puzzling support, but includes a well-supported lineage of species endemic to the California Floristic Province. Comparisons of this Californian lineage with other neoendemic angiosperm groups of the region show that the Californian Cirsium lineage exhibits unusually high ecological diversity for a group displaying such low levels of rDNA sequence divergence across taxa. Similarly low levels of sequence divergence were found throughout the New World Cirsium lineage. These results indicate either that Cirsium underwent a rapid ecological radiation in North America, or that rDNA evolution in North American Cirsium has been highly conservative.  相似文献

A survey of pollen morphology and ultrastructure within the Rhaponticum group, using both scanning and transmission electron microscopy, revealed two pollen types. Most representatives of the Rhaponticum group exhibited Serratula‐type pollen. The exceptions were the genus Oligochaeta, with Centaurea jacea‐type pollen, and the genus Myopordon, with both types of pollen. Phylogenetic inference within the group indicated that Jacea‐type pollen is derived from Serratula‐type pollen. The fact that Myopordon exhibited a series of pollen types, from Serratula type to Jacea type, suggests that a transition from one form to another has occurred in the genus. Therefore, the factor which has produced this evolutionary tendency should be sought within Myopordon. Jacea‐type pollen is characterized by a decrease in size, ornamentation, the absence of a columellar infratectum and the presence of a cavea. A comparative survey of similar tendencies in other groups, and their correlation with potential functional implications, prompted the hypothesis that the critical factor involved in such evolution of pollen could be habitats with extreme conditions. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 499–510.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of studies of the generic concept of Senecio sensu stricto. The sample of taxa studied consisted of 93 Natal senecios (including seven varieties and two forms), five Cape heterochromous senecios and nine non-southern African senecios, including the type of the genus, S. vulgaris L. Also included in the study were six species from taxonomically closely related genera in the tribe Senecioneae and one Senecio of uncertain taxonomic position. The phenotype of these taxa was investigated with respect to a large number (122) of morphological and micromorphological characters. Six characters were selected as being taxonomically important with respect to elucidating the generic concept of Senecio sensu stricto. The generic concept of Senecio has been provisionally re-circumscribed and the generic status of each of the senecios and non-senecios studied has been tested according to this concept of Senecio sensu stricto sensu Vincent. In the light of this concept of Senecio , the following species are recommended for exclusion from Senecio sensu stricto sensu Vincent: S. cissampelinus, S. transvaalensis, S. syringifolius and S. hockii. The following species are considered to be peripheral to Senecio sensu stricto sensu Vincent: S. tanacetopsis, S. seminiveus, S. medley-woodii, S. tamoides, S. helminthioides, S. barbertonicus, S. brevilorus, S. viminalis, S. radicans and S.fulgens. Before any taxonomic changes are made to the current composition of Senecio , the concept of Senecio sensu stricto sensu Vincent, is being tested on a worldwide sample of the genus.  相似文献

A new species of Centaurea, Centaurea sicana , endemic to Sicily, is described. This new taxon is close to Centaurea parlatoris and Centaurea giardinae (Sect. Dissectae), the former occurring at Palermo and in the Madonie Mountains, while the latter occurs on the Etna volcano. The taxonomic status of Centaurea section Acrocentron in Iran is briefly reviewed. A critical study of 251 herbarium specimens, and an additional 37 accessions collected specifically for this research, led to the discovery of a new variety, Centaurea irritans var. longispinosa Montazerolghaem , and the revival of another, C. persica var. subinermis, a taxon previously treated as a synonym for about 25 years. A new species of the genus Chresta Vell. ex DC. (Vernonieae, Asteraceae) from the Brazilian state of Bahia is described and illustrated. The new species resembles Chresta pinnatifida (Philipson) H.Rob. but differs in having solitary glomerules, leaf bases clasping the stem and 35–40 capitula per glomerule. It can be distinguished from Chresta harleyii and Chresta martii , the other two species of the genus with pinnately lobed leaves, by the type of pubescence, leaf blade bases and florets number. A new species of Tripleurospermum Sch.Bip., Tripleurospermum ziganaense Inceer & Hay?rl?oglu‐Ayaz (Asteraceae, Anthemideae), is described and illustrated. The species grows in open places, on rocky slopes and on roadsides in north‐east Anatolia, Turkey. Ligularia dalaolingensis, a new species from Hubei and Hunan, China, is described and illustrated. It belongs to L. sect. Ligularia ser. Speciosae on the basis of its palmate leaf venation, racemose synflorescence and pappus which is slightly shorter than the tube of the tubular corolla. In the series, its closest relatives are assumed to be L. fischeri and L. stenocephala. From L. fischeri, L. dalaolingensis is readily distinguished by smaller basal leaves, shorter synflorescence, narrower involucres and fewer phyllaries and florets; from L. stenocephala, L. dalaolingensis differs by smaller basal leaves, shorter synflorescence as well as broader bracts. A diagnostic key to Chinese species of L. ser. Speciosae with broadly ovate, ovate or ovate‐lanceolate bracts is provided.  相似文献

A new species of Centaurea L., C. kizildaghensis (Cardueae: Asteraceae), is described and illustrated from south Anatolia. It is restricted to the serpentine rocky slopes of Kızıl Dağ (C3 Konya–Derebucak, Çamlık), and is closely related to C. pseudokotschyi Wagenitz and C. drabifolioides Hub.-Mor., from which it differs in stem, leaf, and phyllary appendage characters. The diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. Seventeen flavonoid glycosides were isolated from the leaves of the nine species of Coreopsis sect. Coreopsis. The compounds include two flavones, four flavonols, a 6-hydroxyflavone, a 6-hydroxyflavonol, two 6-methoxyflavones, a 6-methoxyflavonol and three chalcone-aurone pairs. Chemistry distinguishes all species except C. auriculata and C. intermedia. The mean flavonoid similarity for pair-wise comparison of the four species of annuals (C. basalis, C. nuecensis, C. nuecensoides and C. wrightii) is 0.63 whereas it is 0.66 for the five perennial species (C. auriculata, C. grandiflora, C. intermedia, C. lanceolata, C. pubescens) and 0.54 for comparison of annuals with perennials. This indicates that on the average there is slightly higher flavonoid similarity among species of annuals and among species of perennials than there is between annuals and perennials. Lack of the chalcone-aurone pair coreopsin-sulfurein in perennials is the only consistent chemical difference between annuals and perennials. Leaf flavonoid chemistry supports the hypothesis that C. nuecensis and C. nuecensoides are closely related species but flavonoid data are not concordant with the hypothesis of close relationship between C. basalis and C. wrightii, intermedia, Coreopsis pubescens and C. lanceolata are considered closely related and flavonoid chemistry is concordant with this hypothesis. Coreopsis lanceolata is also viewed as closely allied to C. auriculata, but flavonoids suggest the latter species is more similar to C. intermedia. Coreopsis grandiflora is the only perennial species lacking flavonols and has the fewest number of compounds of any species in the section; chemical data support the view that C. grandiflora is quite distinct from other perennial species of sect. Ifloga in southern Africa is revised and comments are offered on the northern hemisphere species, I. spicata (together with I. rueppellii ) and I. obovata. Twelve species are recognized in southern Africa, two being described as new. Two natural groups, based on floral characters, are recognized and the rank of subgenus is proposed for these. Ifloga spicata, I. obovata, I. glomerata, I. anomala, I. thellungiana and I. molluginoides constitute subgenus Ifloga; I. verticillata, I. polycnemoides, I. paronychioides, I. Candida, I. ambigua, I. repens, I. pilulifera, I. decumbens , subgenus Trichogyne. A key to the species is provided. The morphology and phytogeography of the genus are discussed.  相似文献

Saussurea balangshanensis, based on populations from Balang Mountain in the Hengduan Mountains region, SW China, is described and illustrated as a new species of Asteraceae. It can be distinguished from other species in Saussurea by its concolorous leaves, swollen and hollow upper stems, articulate hairs and stipitate glandular hairs, laciniate margins of uppermost stem leaves, numerous and sessile capitula, and narrow involucre. Based on nucleotide sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), phylogenetic analyses also support the recognition of these populations as representing a new species. The new species is known only from a single location in Balang Mountain, at elevations of 4500–4700 m. Its habitat can be easily disturbed or destroyed by a tourist arterial highway and the over grazing. We propose that the species should be listed as Critically Endangered based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List Categories and Criteria B2a.  相似文献

During a stay at the Kirstenbosch Research Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), several groups of Asteraceae were studied. One of these was the genus Marasmodes (tribe Anthemideae). After a careful taxonomic study of additional material, including the first species described by A. P. de Candolle, the author has concluded that eight collections should be considered as new species.
